Guiding Light Cast Roundup 81

May 24, 2018

This is the eighty-first in an irregular feature where we will report updates on what cast members of Guiding Light are doing now. I’m playing catch up on some soap magazine news. So as a reminder you can buy back issues:

Bethany Joy Lenz (our dearly beloved Michelle Bauer Santos #4) guest starred on Grey’s Anatomy. The episode is called “1-800-799-7233.” It’s the winter premiere of the second half of the season (Season 14, Episode 9) and originally aired January 18, 2018. Her character’s name is Jenny. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt7043736/

Morgan Englund (Dylan Lewis, Billy and Reva’s son who ended up with Bridget) is the subject of a where are they now feature in the July 3, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest. After GL, Englund wanted to go into music, but he was a single father so he decided he needed something more regular. Following in Dylan’s shoes he became a first responder and then part of the fire department. Then in 2017 he decided to try to get into music again. About his connections to the Guiding Light cast he says “I just talked to Melissa Hayden [Bridget Reardon Lewis] yesterday because she’s hopefully going to be involved in some way with the video. We connect every couple of years and want to do something together. And every time I see Kim [Zimmer, Reva Shayne Lewis], we’re right back to where we were before, so there’s a lot of love there. I loved working with her and Jordan [Clarke, Billy Lewis]. Maureen Garrett [Holly Reade] and I also exchanged messages recently….GL didn’t hire just any people; [they cast] mostly theater actors, like [the late] Michael Zaslow [Roger Thorpe]. They were amazing actors to work with. I feel very fortunate.”

In the May 14, 2018 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth Sharon Newman’s Crimson Lights gets a shout out because – unlike Company in the last couple of years – people actually pay for what they eat. Go Sharon!

Joseph Campanella (a criminal named Joe Turino) died May 16, 2018. Campanella was an incredibly busy actor appearing on many shows on daytime, primetime, film, and the stage over the decades until his retirement in 2009. Guiding Light was his second regular series role and we was on between 1959-1960. I have to idea who this character was. I’m glad we got the name, but if anyone has more details, please share.

Laura Wright (Cassie Layne #1, Reva’s long lost sister) talked about her time on Guiding Light when her character stayed with Edmund when they were trying to get pregnant and impregnated Dinah Marler. Brian Mertes, who was my director on Guiding Light, taught me that I can justify absolutely anything as an actor. He wouldn’t let the stay in the no and he taught me to just go for it. He’d say, “We have to do this. So why would your character do it? I’m not the actor who would say, “That doesn’t make sense to me,” or put in changes or complaints, ever, because I still justify anything you hand to me.” Read about it in the February 26, 2018 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

The 1997 Time Capsule round up article in the July 3, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest list these turn over in the TPTB at Guiding Light: Paul Rauch took over as executive producer, succeeding Michael Laibson; Head Writers Michael Conforti, Victor Miller and Nancy Williams Watt were replaced by James Harmon Brown and Barbara Esensten; and the show celebrated major milestones; the 60th anniversary of its radio debut and the 45th anniversary of its move to TV.”

The 2003 Time Capsule round up article in the February 26, 2018 issue of Soap Opera Digest list these turn overs in the TPTB at Guiding Light: John Conboy was named EP, and Millee Taggart resigned as head writer, succeeded by Ellen Weston and Donna Swajeski.”

A spooky story round up in the October 30, 2017 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth includes the end of the Cleva (Reva’s clone) story complete with photo. It also has photos of David Kimball (Killer carved in his forehead) from The Young and the Restless and from As the World Turns the James-Barbara-Gunnar time travel story and Shannon O’Hara return from the dead despite her shrunken head storylines.

In the July 24, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest has a close up photo of Vincent Irizarry (Lujack/Nick McHenry) in his disguise he wore for the end of his role on Deimos Kiriakis on Days of Our Lives. Ellen Parker who played Maureen Reardon Bauer #2 announced she was in the independent film called Ties to Rachel that was then seeking a distributor in the May 27, 1997 issue of Soap Opera Weekly.

During the heighth of the Annie-Reva feud around when Annie faked Reva pushing her down the stairs, Suzanne Schwarzer (GL’s then costume designer) found a company called Annie Reva (in a total coincidence). She bought several of their pieces for the cast. Read more about it Soap Opera Weekly issue May 13, 1997. The article also spells out the complicated shooting of the actual fall. It mentions stunt woman Janet Paparazzo, director Bruce Barry, and stunt coordinator Peter Hock. It also looks as if Reva could actually be charged (it hasn’t happened, but hypothetically it could).

The May 27, 1997 issue of Soap Opera Weekly did a Where Are They Now? feature on Val Dufour. He left acting right after he left his role of attorney John Wyatt on Search for Tomorrow in 1980. He gave this great quote. “But the real challenge is the development of the characters and the day to day movability of it, because the writers change. I once told Mary Stuart (the last Meta Bauer on Guiding Light) that we should have been given an award for rewriting.”

Nick McHenry and Susan Marry We Learn Henry Is Dead Feb 19 1996 and Some Undated Days

January 25, 2018

I had a long gap I had to figure out, but picking up the continued story with episodes broken into dates here we are again. I started going through and breaking Bandstand Mike’s episodes into dates. This run started on December 20, 1995. Our last post in the series ended February 16, 1996.

This is a wonderful week with some pretty terrific stuff every day. Annie is forced by the custody battle to move back to her old apartment. Some of her friends show up to throw her a “Reva will get hers” party. Rick tells Josh some hard truths about Annie including that Rick wants her back. Alex is gleeful at the news Alan and Reva broke up. Buzz is trying to cheer Reva up and Josh has an evil plan to handle Reva, but will it backfire? Between the stock he gave Amanda and the $10 million ransom that was lost Alan doesn’t have a lot left. A-M invites him back to Spaulding, but Alan is afraid that he wouldn’t be happy at Spaulding at less than the presidency and the temptation to take it back might be too much. Reva disrupts the Spaulding dinner in an effort to try and get Alan back, but no dice. We get a romantic and pretty hot LAM sequence. Nick McHenry and Susan Bates marry at the Spaulding Mansion. Everyone receives word that Henry Chamberlain has died. Michelle had a fight with J and now wants to leave town rather than see him again. David and Bridget argue over her being hung up on Hart and he confesses he loves her. Hart has decided to stay in town and expose Roger’s misdeeds towards Dinah, asking for help from Alan and Gilly. Meanwhile Roger desperately struggles to cover his embezzlement. Quint comes back to town bimbo in tow. Marah reacts badly to the custody fight and runs away. The entire 5th Street neighborhood comes together in an effort to find her. Griffin helps out and Gilly begins to think maybe she was wrong about him. (Nope. She was right on the money after her mother talked to her.) Marah shows up at Reva’s house and intends to stay there. She has brought along stuff she stole to remind her of Annie.

Monday, February 19, 1996

Ed takes Annie back to face her apartment and leaving the Land of Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams. The Spauldings are gathering and Alex is gleeful that Alan says he’s done with Reva. Buzz is trying to get Reva out of her funk. Josh has some evil plan to handle Reva.

Reva asks Buzz for a job which considering her previous jobs doesn’t make a lot of sense, but OK.  Buzz agrees despite the fact that Elanie grabs him and drags him away saying they don’t have enough work for it — despite the fact they are normally short handed. Josh asks Rick to check in on Annie and Rick explodes that he can’t do that. But that just goes to show how thoughtless Josh is.

The party is a great idea. I get why Lillian would be there, but why Vanessa? Sure she’d like to complain about Reva and for some reason despite her troubles with Billy Vanessa stayed close to Josh, but Annie? During the girl talk Lillian sort of admits to having a thing for Ed and when Annie suggests wrapping herself in plastic and making a move on Josh. Vanessa says tinfoil is better because it tears easier. I kind of love that. Rick tells Josh some hard truths. Vanessa says her cook made the dinner so they must have one and Annie and Josh have Mary as a nanny. The Spauldings are enjoying a great dinner.

Alan is called from the dinner table and says he lost all $10 million dollars and with the gift he made to Amanda of Spaulding stock he doesn’t have much left. Alan says he regrets neither the gift of stock, nor using the money in an attempt to get Alan-Michael and Lucy back. Alex is shocked. Alan-Michael invites Alan back into the company. Alan refuses saying he learned he wouldn’t be happy in a supporting role and he doesn’t intend to take the presidency back, but he knows the temptation would be too much at Spaulding. Everyone is surprised. Reva bursts in.

The Spaulding family run out leaving Alan and Reva alone. Reva tells Alan the custody battle news and asks Alan to come back. Alan says no, he thinks she’s still hung up on Josh. Reva gets mad he won’t come and takes off. Rick and Josh face off over their treatment of Annie. Rick is living in the Bauer garage apartment. Abby walks in on the conflict.

Rick confesses he still has feelings for Annie to Abby. Considering the future, watching Rick explain divorce to Abby is heartbreaking. Just heartbreaking.

Apparently A-M and Lucy have adopted a dog named Faith that they hid under the table at the Spaulding dinner. A-M and Lucy talk about their wedding. Lucy wants a big wedding, but A-M says it doesn’t matter because he sees them as already married from their lighthouse ceremony. It’s just lovely. Elanie tries to talk sense to Buzz about Reva which doesn’t stick. Then we have a lovely Alan and Alexandra sibling talk. “To moving forward for all of us.”

We have a pretty romantic and hot LAM love scene. Rick continues to squirm under Abby’s questions about Annie and Hawk shows up encouraging Rick to make a play for Annie tonight. Meanwhile the girls night is breaking up with Lillian leaving Vanessa to do the dishes. Annie is convinced Josh is somewhere with Reva — which against all odds he actually is.

Tues., February 20, 1996

We’re getting ready for Nick and Susan’s wedding in the Spaulding Mansion. The guys are picking out a playlist and even Alan gets roped into the set up. Susan and Lucy have a you’re like a sister talk.

Amanda is expanded to the like a sister group and helps Susan get ready. Nick gives Alex a thank you with a subtext that I’m leaving soon, but she doesn’t get it. Susan’s AIDS support group shows up.

Nick McHenry and Susan Bates get married in the Spaulding living room. It’s a simple service and the guests stand as the bride and groom meet before the fireplace. Only a handful of people attend and they have only one attendant each, Alan-Michael Spaulding (the groom’s cousin) is the Best Man and Lucy Cooper is the Maid of Honor. The head of the AIDS group gives her away.

Nick and Susan announce they aren’t going to come back after the honeymoon, but intend to take a world tour exploring the world on an open ended trip. “For as long as we have.” Susan is diagnosed with AIDS, a step worse than her previous diagnosed HIV. The last time we heard from them on the show she was still alive.

Extra Day 1 – February 1996???

We seem to have skipped at least one episode somewhere. It seems like maybe more than one. That means I can’t establish the dates for the next few episodes and we missed some kind of important scenes. Part of why I was going through these particular clips was because with a solid starting date (the very special Christmas episode) I could give an exact date for the episodes. This stops that, but I should be able to pick it up again on March 1st.

Matt has told Vanessa how he’d be tied up with an escort service Amanda Spaulding ran out in California.  We must have already heard that Henry Chamberlain (Vanessa and Quint’s father, Nola’s father-in-law to whom she was quite close, Dinah, Little Billy, Anastasia and J. [Anthony James]’s grandfather, also an “adoptive” father to Jenna Bradshaw) has passed on or the audience wouldn’t already have understood he was dead when Nola starts talking to J about him in the past tense. Henry was a great guy. I’m sorry he’s gone. While I was working on my WSPR news stories, which I hope to be able to do more of sometime, I did a post that tied into the end of the series, the building of Henry Chamberlain Elementary.  In the actual series they only say they are building a new elementary school, but since they didn’t name it, I did.

We’re at WSPR with Roger and Gilly (who is a reporter/producer there) and Ross arrives to gloat that Roger needs to hand over Dinah’s money (which Roger actually has embezzled). Over at the Bauer House Ed seems in a very good place, but sadly as always with this version of Michelle she is being dopey. She’s following her normal storyline procedure I describe in the linked post above – this time with her adoptive cousin Jay. I know – ICK! right? The fans at the time thought so too and the pairing was dropped.

Roger tries to divert Ross from the divorce by painting Hart as a worse threat to Dinah which Hart overhears. Michelle continues to say she wants to leave town and is teenage hysterical.

J regrets taking Henry for granted the last time he saw him which was very natural. They discuss Quint coming back. David and Bridget come in and are sorry, but in what world were they anything to do with Henry? Matt fills Vanessa in on Henry’s death.

Matt expects Vanessa to put aside the fall out from his revelation until dealing with Henry’s death is over. Vanessa needs time to process and is having none of it. Good for her especially when Matt tries to lay a guilt card on her – “I need you too. I loved him too.” I mean self-centered much? Roger uses Henry’s death as a lever to get rid of Ross and delay handing over the accounts. He still hopes he can delay long enough to win Dinah back and keep control. Bridget and David talk about fixing up the boarding house and her obsession with Hart.

Hart and Roger fight. I think Roger is right about one thing. I think he does love Hart he was just already in a bad spot with him (having unintentionally caused his grandfather who had raised him’s death) and his attempts to fix it just made things worse. Gilly and Hart have a talk about Roger. Ed told Michelle to get a ride to school with Gale’s mother. I don’t remember Gale at all and we probably won’t see her today – we don’t. They are going to meet outside. Vanessa went over to tell Nola, but Nola had already heard somehow through Michelle. Vanessa and Nola had been rivals for attention when Nola and Quint had lived in Springfield, but they both loved Henry very much.

Nola: “[Vanessa] Are you OK?”

Vanessa: “Yes, yes, yes, yes.”

Nola: “I’m not….I’m glad you came by.”

Vanessa: “I know how much you loved my father…”

Nola: “I keep thinking about the craziest things. This one night we had an all night poker game. He accused me of bluffing and he never folded his hand.”

Vanessa with a smile: “That’s because he wanted you to win.”

Nola: “Yea, he did want me to win. Not too many people I can say that about. You were real lucky to have him.”

Vanessa wants to talk funeral arrangements. Nola breaks down she’s not ready yet.

Nola: “You can cry in front of me. We can cry together.”

David and Bridget argue over Hart and Bridget’s reactions to him. Roger breaks back into the suite and takes the real books and information about how he drained Dinah’s accounts. He asks Leo Flynn to make a set of dummy books and when Roger offers him his yearly salary for the two weeks work he accepts. Meanwhile Hart is getting information from Gilly that Roger cooked the books.

More icky cousin on cousin action. J tells Michelle some garbage and she eats it up with a spoon. Michelle to J: “See that’s what I mean about me not doing or saying the right thing. I mean in the first place I’m NOT that young. I went to SCHOOL IN EUROPE. I’m not a stupid little kid.” Now she’s in good with J again, Michelle is all over leaving. Ross and Matt talk about Vanessa. Matt proving once again he’s a junior partner in their relationship and that doesn’t know Vanessa as well as Ross does. Ross: “Vanessa didn’t always have the qualities you admire. It takes time and it’ll take time for you.” aka you’re immature. Ross thinks that Matt helped Vanessa get through her anger at Billy and Bridget and Dylan that was taking over her life. Nola keeps at Vanessa trying to get her to face her emotions. Vanessa has a list of pall bearers – the list of names doesn’t include Matt.

Roger reassures Leo they will be safe. Hart shows up to ask Alan for his help to nail Roger. Nola keeps urging Vanessa to let go, but Vanessa is maintaining her stiff upper lip. David tells Bridget he’s in love with her. Quint shows up at the Reardon Boarding House door.

Extra Day 2 – February 1996???

Marah has run away. People are gathering with Josh and Annie at the Land of Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams, and volunteers stop by the 5th Street Diner where Reva is keeping everybody full up with coffee. Quinton and Vanessa cling to their mutual loss.

Annie is sort of right and sort of wrong about Marah running away being Reva’s fault. Josh is frustrated and says he can’t just wait there he is going to do some random looking himself. Quint and Nola make nice and find forgiveness in their grief. Quint admits Nola was even closer to his father than he was. They talk about Henry’s reaction to their breakup since Henry has been “visiting” Quint between when the actor died and when the character died on screen.
Quint: “He said to me, I was always afraid you would be dissatisfied with a perfect marriage.”

Hart goes to Alan for help taking out Roger.
Amanda: “Father, don’t murder Hart unless you want to be involved in another costly legal battle.”

Alan about Hart: “You are a determined little flea, aren’t you.”
David tells Bridget he’s in love with her. Bridget and David continue to discuss his declaration. Gilly goes on air with an appeal to help find Marah. Reva won’t go on afraid it might make Marah run. Griffin shows up and Gilly thinks he’s just showing off, but when he goes looking himself Gilly thinks maybe she was wrong. Tina, the prostitute from New Years, shows up and offers her help too. Gilly wants to put Reva on camera to aid in search for Marah Lewis (who is 8). Reva thinks it would cause more problems. Tina was the prostitute who came in on New Year’s Eve and Eleni chased her out.

Holly and Fletcher are with Annie at the Land of Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams supporting Annie while Marah was gone. Annie unknowingly predicts the future that she and Josh will be together forever just like Holly and Fletcher (SPOILER: both couples will soon be toast). Josh finds Reva at the dinner (clearly something really important happened in between since we last saw them). Henry Chamberlain has died (more important stuff went down with the Reardons and Chamberlains that we didn’t see) and J walks in with Vanessa finding Quint and Nola embarrassing situation (SPOILER: do NOT get your hopes up Quola fans if they had to do this stupid affair stuff they could have gotten some decent interaction out of it. Nope not happening. Still resentful.). The grad student Quint was sleeping with shows up, everyone freaks and Quint can’t understand why.

They freak out.

J : “You almost had me going there professor for a second I was almost buying into you being my dad again. I even thought you looked good standing there hugging Mom. You know what I was saying to myself, maybe this guy has finally turned back into an adult, but you know what, NO you have to bring your Barbie doll girlfriend along from grad school.”

Quint: “I do NOT like the way you’re speaking to Jessica Do NOT use that tone of voice with your father.”

J : “Maybe if you acted like my dad, I could treat you like one all right.”

Vanessa is likewise appalled and freezing girlfriend Barbie out.

Amanda offers comfort to Alan because he’s upset about his relationship with Reva. Amanda give him advice: “If you really love someone, what good is pride anyway?”

Josh leaves and Reva feels faint from not eating.

Griffin talks Reva into eating to keep strong.  Gilly is thinking Griffin is putting on a show (which I think he totally is), but the search for Marah continues. The Journal is putting out a special edition. Josh makes it home to the Land of Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams. Word came a little girl matching Marah’s description was hit by a car.

Hart finds Bridget and says he wants Peter to be part of his life and he’d taken her words to heart. David freaks. Bridget shuts him down. J tries to comfort Nola about Quint. Vanessa tears into Quint over his bringing his mistress for the funeral. Reva returns to her house and discovers Marah is there waiting for her.

Extra Day 3 February 1996

Alan pushes into Company and we’ve already lost all the goodwill from working together to save LAM. Instead Buzz and Alan snarl at each other over Reva — who really be better off if she’d tell both of them to take a long walk off a short pier. Josh and Annie arrive at Cedars rushing into the emergency room where they find it was another little girl who was hurt (no name girl isn’t badly hurt so don’t worry about her). Marah tells Reva that she’s there to move in with Reva, but only if she’ll leave Josh and Annie alone.

Actually they are both right Buzz and Alan are making fools of themselves, fighting over which man wiill second and which third in Reva’s life.  Marah tells Reva that she did her chores. On a school morning she is responsible for making her bed and getting her own breakfast. Sounds like either Josh and Annie or the nanny aren’t doing their duty, she has to feed herself? Reva tries to figure out what’s going on. Marah takes this as an indication that Reva doesn’t want her living there and asked then why did Reva say she’d never stop fighting Josh. Rick and Lillian support Annie and Josh is angry Rick is taking an interest. Since Reva is back on Josh’s radar, if Josh wasn’t a jerk he’d step back, but he’s ready to set a course to crash Annie on the rocks instead.

And we get to see the Bauer House today. Yay! Michelle attempts to spread both poor body image AND poor nutritional advice to Abby. Can’t it be November 1998 in a hurry? Hold on Michelle you’re going to act stupid the next couple of years, but Danny is coming as a reward at the end. Abby has a romantic fantasy about Rick and a red dress. The wind machine in the Bauer kitchen is a nice touch. 🙂 Buzz is running off at the mouth. He has no idea what makes Alan tick. I’m not exactly who he thinks he’s describing here, but it’s not Alan. Reva tries to explain to Marah that she doesn’t understand. Marah’s misdirection tactic includes explaining that her nanny is named Mary and is from Dublin, Ireland.

Abby tells Michelle that she feels her Goshen clothes make people either laugh at her or ignore her. Rick and Michelle have an unproductive talk about dating. He tells her to let J alone (not by name) and she tells him Abby has a thing for him which Rick doesn’t believe. I think Reva should have called Josh, sent Marah upstairs for something if she doesn’t want to do it in front of her. Shayne comes down and has a nice conversation with Annie. Shayne sells Marah out telling Annie that Marah took the musicbox. Reva as always hears what she wants to when Marah talks to her.

Frank asks Buzz if he loves Reva. Frank says he knew Buzz and Nadine had something magic, but weren’t right together long term. What now? Alan showed up at Reva’s door before she could call Josh. Alan tells her he’s sorry, but already in Josh light again Reva is not interested and tells Alan to hit the road. Meanwhile Marah makes a sad little shrine to her former life. Shayne continues to spill his guts listing off what Marah took even though it was mostly “stupid girl stuff.”

Michelle tells Rick Abby has a crush on him. Rick says “Ya, right” and then Abby comes in dressed in modern clothes. Rick wants to talk Abby down. Little girl Marina is cute and fun. It’s really a shame Eleni took her to California and ruined her. I don’t know why they never gave Frank another committed relationship after this, he does them so well. Annie and Josh figure out that Marah had been collecting things to remember Annie by.

Rick tries to talk Abby down. Alan is remembering hard truths from Reva and Buzz. Reva discovers Marah has taken Annie’s things to remember her.

Jeva Custody Case 1996 Feb 12 16 1996

August 7, 2017

I started going through and breaking Bandstand Mike’s episodes into dates. This run started on December 20, 1995. Our last post in the series ended February 9 1996.

Rick confesses to Annie he still loves her and wants her back. Alan tells Reva to give up the custody fight or he’s leaving her. Reva picks her kids. With Alan out of the picture Buzz attempts to move in and ignores Hawk’s admonition that Reva and Josh will always find their way back to each other. The Jeva custody trial moves forward. LAM are back together and sorry to have missed their original wedding date and are in a hurry to arrange another. However, they aren’t as in as much of a hurry as Susan and Nick McHenry who will marry and move to Europe within the next week with little or no warning. Amanda is found locked in the construction shed and is dangerously ill. She’s rushed to the hospital meaning Alan has two children in the hospital right now. Dinah solidifies her friendship with Dinah – which is good they both could use a friend. Hart is still determined to leave town and heads for the bus station.

Monday, February 12, 1996

I think Amanda is right about Ross being furious and on her side if he would find her or find out about it, but why would he think to look for her? He thinks she left his office to go home. Rick confesses to Annie he doesn’t think she and Josh will make it and that he still loves her. Alan tells Reva give up the custody fight, make a deal, or he’s out of their relationship.

Reva tells Alan that she needs him in her life. Amanda makes a foolish decision and doesn’t ask the guard for help. That’s kind of awesome that Amanda figured how to get out.

Ross: “I waited a lifetime to find you.”

Blake: “And when you did you couldn’t get enough.”

Dinah and Amanda find each other at a bar and commiserate. Hart heads to the bus station.

Reva tells Alan she’s choosing her kids, she isn’t pursuing the kids just to keep a link with Josh. He still doesn’t believe her. He gives Reva the house. She says she won’t stay there, but she and Josh later live there. Ross discovers Blake left her birth control in the bathroom despite Ross specifically asking her to use it to take the stress off.

Ross is concerned about Blake. Dinah and Amanda are quickly becoming drinking buddies. Dinah: “If you can unseat the henna head more power to you!” (Henna is used for various things including red hair dye.) Ross believes Josh is devoted to Annie. He’s normally not this stupid.

Nice for Reva to have reached out to Dylan even if it’s off camera. Hawk really looked cold in that coat. Great acting job. Hawk tells Reva that he was staying with a friend and got kicked out when he burned down the coach. Hawk also confesses he blew through all of Miss Sarah’s money on gambling. Josh is supporting Miss Sarah now. Look at Reva and that handkerchief. She genuinely cared for Alan. It makes no sense considering how she treats him later. Good for Amanda not letting Dinah drive drunk.

“All the damage fear has done.” That’s a perfect song for Bloss right now. The quilt on their bed is Flying Geese pattern.

Tuesday, February 13, 1996

It’s a new day in Springfield. Buzz shows up to visit Reva and is ecstatic Reva and Alan have broken up.

Annie and Josh are concerned about the hearing today. That’s too bad that Dinah responded with snark. I think Blake is trying to be nice for once. Matt finally gets to work and finds a truly unconscious Amanda.

Marah is upset that Reva is doing something that has upset Annie and Josh. Hawk (about Jeva not reconciling immediately): “That doesn’t mean it’s open season for every Tom, Dick, or burger flipper.” Buzz and Hawk clash over Reva. Good for Reva to stand up as an independent woman.
Reva: “I’m not a little girl anymore and I’m not Snow White waiting for some prince to come save me.” Buzz is indulging in some wishful thinking here.

Hawk turns up to see Marah. He brings her a Barbie like doll with a cowgirl outfit. I agree with Hawk someone should explain things to Marah even if it really isn’t his place. Amanda is rushed to Cedars. It’s a rough day for Alan with two children in the hospital. I’d say 3 months is a couple of months. That was pretty picky. Rick is called to the witness stand. Althea brings up Annie’s alcoholism.

Ross cross examines Rick. Ed is called to the stand. He claims privileged information and refuses to answer even when threatened with a contempt of court charge. I think the counseling stuff should be covered, but having to physically take a bottle out of her hands is direct experience and I do think he should be required to tell about that. Hawk explains Reva’s side to Marah. I’m kind of sorry Dinah outed Amanda. Blake kind of deserves it. Dinah’s right it’s a bit harsh to defend Blake to Amanda when Amanda was in the hospital.

Matt warns Blake and is shocked to hear Amanda was at least telling part of the truth. Ross walks by and over hears.

Wednesday, February 14, 1996

Alex finally shows up at Cedars to see A-M to find Nick and Susan already there this morning. I know it’s not nice what they are saying about Blake who I like, but I’m enjoying Dinah and Amanda as friends. They both need some female and friendly support.

About Blake Dinah: “She’s toast.”

Amanda: “Burnt toast.”

Dinah: “Soon to be turned into crumbs.”

Amanda: “And swept away. Bye-bye Blake.”

Alan shows up very concerned about Amanda. Why do you think Amanda could easily get out, Blake? I mean she Macguyvered her way out, but it wasn’t obvious.

Reva genuinely doesn’t know what Annie is talking about. I don’t blame Ross for being appalled. That is some mustache on the cop. Roger is still playing the distressed husband role. Luckily Dinah isn’t having it.

Nick and Susan are trying to keep prying eyes away from Lucy and Alan-Michael making out. We get a reference to Valentine’s Day. They were originally supposed to get married on that day. Which considering that was VERY close to A-M and Harley’s anniversary, it’s a little tasteless. Great job building up tension about the witness.

I don’t know why Reva objected to her lawyer. I think this is perfectly fair testimony especially because she had done absolutely nothing to help this woman even since marrying big money. Alex informs Nick and Susan who were talking about an impromptu wedding that she plans Alex: “the wedding of MY dreams.” Alan comes in informing the family that he has moved back into the mansion and that Amanda is down in Emergency. Roger continues to try and save his relationship with Dinah. It was Roger’s place originally, I don’t know why Dinah thinks he should leave.

Blake is put in the cell next to Brent Lawrence who is still insisting he’s Marian Crane. Roger is still focusing on how he NEEDS Dinah in his life. Sadly it’s because he’s embezzling her money and doesn’t want it to come out. Roger has a rare gift he can make you like him and hate him within the space of a handful of episodes and then do it all over again. Amanda to Matt about how she couldn’t break out of the construction shack: “Forgive me for never having watched This Old Shack.” That’s a reference to a popular PBS home remodel show This Old House. Annie testifies about her alcoholism and does a great job. (Honestly the only time I ever liked Annie on the show was when she was fighting with Ghost Reva otherwise it always seemed like even when she was happy there was a level of frenzied crazy eye right below the surface, but she did NOT deserve the campaign against her by Jeva which has already began even though Josh doesn’t realize it yet.)

Matt gets Amanda to drop the charges against Blake and is still on her case. Alexandra overhears his threat, but doesn’t know what Matt has on Amanda. Frank is frustrated about getting through to Brent and calls A-M. Dinah tells Roger that she isn’t having any that setting up Marcus and constantly seeing the look of pity in Holly’s eyes is too much she isn’t going back. Again it was Roger’s place Dinah moved in why should he leave?

Hart shows up on Dinah’s door. Blake is released and A-M shows up at the jail to talk to Brent. The judge rules that the kids stay with Josh, but Annie has to move out. I’m pretty positive, but not 100% that this is the tag for Wednesday, but the way it’s put together both the clips and the structure this could possibly be the before the credits of the next day.

Thursday, February 15, 1996

Dinah makes a crack about Hart not being the Prize Patrol – she is referencing American Publishing House which sent out a prize patrol with balloons and a giant fake check announcing you won so many million dollars in their drawing which you entered by buying magazine subscriptions. Frank Cooper decides he might be able to crack Brent by bringing in Alan-Michael and Lucy. Amanda is still sick (coughing) when no one is around, but not too bad. Blake shows up at her room to tear into Amanda. I think that Blake is wrong. Sure Amanda could have gotten out, but she easily might not have been able to. It was pretty clever of Amanda to come up with taking the door off the hinges and while she did hide from the guard, a cold night, a slack guard, and he might not have checked. It was a dangerous stunt if she didn’t follow up. Everyone is upset when Annie is ordered out of the house, but I kind of love this judge and I think he’s right.

Judge: “It seems to me that Mr. Lewis has been moving JUST A BIT quickly, starting with his petition to this court two years early to have Reva Shayne Lewis declared legally dead….your client brought a new woman into the lives of his children. He encouraged them to call her Mommy. It would almost seem to this court that he wants Reva Shayne Lewis to stay dead to his children.”

I think this judge is amazingly right on. Why didn’t Manny get HIM in divorce court so he could tell them to sit down and take a breath when they were rushing to get divorced? Buzz moves in to comfort and make a move on Reva. If the construction shack was so weak what was the point of it existing? It was supposed to be protecting those tools and it’s a semi-permanent set, it wasn’t exactly made of paper. Josh: “This shouldn’t be happening. It’s not fair. We both know who’s responsible.” Actually you’re exactly right, Josh. This shouldn’t be happening and YOU and Reva are responsible. Stand up and let Annie go now cleanly and she might still have a chance. What a great Ross and Ed best friend scene near the end. I just love it when they play that.

UPDATED January 9 2018: I realized I didn’t have a summary block so I added one and moved some of the quotes down a line.

Brent Lawrence Bomb in the Lighthouse Part 4 Feb 5 thru Feb 9 1996

January 3, 2017

LAM’s fathers, Alan and Buzz, have teamed up to save the kids in one of my all time favorite Alan-Buzz sequences. Reva and Nick McHenry also join in the rescue effort. LAM are finally rescued and A-M and Alan make peace. Hart has taken his revenge on Roger by bedding Dinah, but Dinah still believes they are the real thing – for good reason. Dinah confides in Ross and he starts divorce proceedings between her and Roger. Bridget is furious that Hart is intending to abandon his son. There is some Annie-Jeva stuff which feels more like a check in with the story rather than organically fitting with the characters’s actions in the other storylines right now. However there is one of the most important scenes ever for Reva when she tries to explain Jeva to Alan in the most clear headed way she ever did. Blake locks Amanda into the construction shed kicking off a great and colorful dream sequence. Comment blocks below include clip description, quotes, and my comments.

Monday, February 5, 1996

Hart had come to town wanting revenge on Roger for what he did to his grandfather (impregnated and then abandoned his daughter, stole his land, and triggered his death) and how Roger had believed Jenna (Roger’s then wife) over Hart when Jenna accused Hart of aggressively hitting on her. (Jenna had lied to cover her own betrayal of Roger.) Hart rubs Roger’s nose in the fact he had sex with Dinah. Marcus talks sense to Dinah, but she doesn’t want to hear it – so what else is new? Reva tells Frank and Frank calls in the cops to come to the dock. We have an amazingly good section where Alan and Buzz have a great back and forth with Brent. Over the years they have Alan and Buzz be enemies and have them work together. It’s always a lot cooler when they set them up to work together. They are different, but both can pull out the gravitas when needed. They throw in some Jeva-Annie business just to do a check-in on that storyline although it feels off where they stick it in. Of course Reva’s lawyer would try to find stuff against Annie and Josh. What do they think? Lucy and Alan-Michael “marry” each other while waiting for the bomb to go off at about 20 minutes into this clip. I was wondering at the time why they didn’t worry about Brent having a camera recording them. Lucy should have followed Brent into the room and not given him a chance to watch it.

Tuesday, February 6, 1996

It was nice look at Ross’ law office, but I don’t know why he’d take off and leave it unlocked. It’s nice of Alan to talk Buzz down about Frank. Nick McHenry shows up and wants to know what’s going on. Reva had hidden in the back of Brent’s truck and is now sneaking into the lighthouse. Hart brings Dinah to Ross’ office to start the ball rolling on her divorce, but doesn’t want to stick around. I don’t understand though what his issue was. Even if he was completely lying (which I only think he thinks he is right now) why not just say he wants kept out for legal reasons and has to go back to work. Why make the big point about leaving to go to lunch? I kind of feel bad though, for once in his life Frank cracks a crime through brain power & 30 seconds later Reva comes in and steals his glory. I’m with Ross I saw how Roger talked Dinah into signing him her power of attorney and I still can’t believe she was that stupid. It’s also not good to co-mingle all funds even within a good marriage. That exact accounting of Dinah’s funds (which Roger has been embezzling left and right) is why Roger has been making these desperate plays to keep Dinah. I think he did like her, but he liked her money and sticking it to Ross even more. Roger is in love with Holly and despite all the garbage between them (they are both in need of serious psych help) I do believe she loves him too. Going for the bomb was truly a brilliant move on Alan-Michael’s part. He is at his smartest in the year or so right before this.

Wednesday, February 7, 1996

Really these are very well done recap half scenes.

Roger: “You know what it’s like to love somebody so much that you’d be willing to do anything to keep them.”

Ross: “Yes, but I don’t think you do.”

Ross is completely wrong here. Roger was willing to deliberately injure himself in a car crash to get another chance with Holly. He just doesn’t feel that way about Dinah. Plus, Ross should see that Roger is legitimately desperate, just over the consequences not losing Dinah per say.  I don’t get Hart being ready to take off either. I don’t think he was ever mature enough to be a good father, but I do think he cared about the kid, at least enough to say goodbye in person. Plus, this is where he gets to stick to Roger. If he takes off Roger might get Dinah back which Hart has spent all this time to set up to keep from happening. Cassie Lawrence (Brent’s sister) shows up and tries to talk Brent down. Ross talks sense to Dinah while Roger waits outside. Maybe he’s trying to get Ross to bust them up hoping he can then reconcile. Bridget reads Hart the riot act. She has started to get emotionally involved again. And if you were starting to think maybe Roger genuinely caring for Dinah note that it was the minute Ross tried to get her to sign the nullification of the Power of Attorney was when he burst in and sadly she leaves without signing. Ross and Roger have a long complicated history an confrontation between them is great. David was in love with Bridget and he was my second choice for her right behind Dylan. They were great friends for a long time – as Bridget and Dylan were – and I think they could have had an incredibly solid marriage, but it never occurred to Bridget to see David that way. The back and forth between Brent, Lucy, and Alan-Michael during the confrontation is great, but it takes like 2 minutes tops to run up the stairs at the lighthouse. Just what is taking Frank and Nick so long? They should have showed them starting later if they didn’t want them up there by now. I’m glad A-M showed he truly was the better person by holding on to Brent, but I can’t blame Lucy for wanting him to let go. This was a good fake out with Bridget and Hart, but it would have been better if they’d cut it in before Dinah arrived. I’ve never heard Miranda read like that, but I think if you have to say “Do you understand?” you need some sort of recognition before you can continue. Full long credits at the end of this one.

Thursday, February 8, 1996

Dinah and Hart talk and you figure out maybe Hart’s decision wasn’t as clear cut as everyone else thought to this point. Blake comes in and hears Ross tell that Hart slept with Dinah to get get even. Blake is on Hart’s side, but Roger tells Blake he still loves her no matter how she feels around him. Roger: “[Amanda] is after your husband and everyone in the whole town knows it…so far this one may have lusted after Amanda only in his heart, but give him time.” [In a very famous interview of former President Jimmy Carter when asked about if he’d ever committed adultery he admitted to having lusted in his heart and the phrase caught on.]

Alan-Michael: “I’m fine.”

Alan: “I’ll believe that when Ed Bauer tells me. I almost lost you once I’m not taking another chance.”

Dinah is hurt by Hart’s attitude. Ed checks out Lucy and Alan-Michael. They are good, but he wants them both in the hospital overnight for observation. Lucy apologizes for losing the $10 million dollars by hitting Brent with the suitcase.

A-M: “Father….that money in the satchel it wasn’t yours, was it?”

Lucy: “Yea, I’m very sorry for loosing it. I just had to hit him with something.”

Alan: “You were magnificent, Lucy. I couldn’t have put it to better use myself.

Lucy: “Yea, but it was a lot of money.”

A-M: “It WAS yours.”

Alan: “It’s only money, son. The most important thing is that you are safe.”

And he really means it. That right there is while you love Alan despite all the awful crap he pulls. I never really liked Nick except when he was happy with Mindy, but when he truly acts like a cousin to A-M which is rare enough I love him. Brent has terrible mental issues. I don’t think he’s faking, but I don’t remember. Why didn’t they call Amanda? She’s his sister and helped during the crisis. Matt to Vanessa about Dinah: “She doesn’t know you as well as she thinks she does.” Sadly that’s because while she does her best to take care of Dinah, Vanessa never ever opens up to Dinah. They needed that conversation for Vanessa to confess how she was as a young woman and how desperate she is for Dinah not to repeat her mistakes. Another nice Alan-Buzz moment. Buzz to Reva: “You have a choice.” You have a choice? Yea, Reva could choose to be independent and walk away from Alan without having to run to another man for once.

Friday, February 9, 1996

I don’t know why Reva believed Josh’s story and allowed it to color her attitude so completely. Even if Alan did things worse than Josh said, he just went through that ordeal with his kid. If she had even mild affection for him, she should have felt glad for him.

Blake: “Very smooth.”

Amanda: “I use moisturizer. Everyone should.”

Blake and Amanda who are more alike than either will admit (which is too bad Amanda grew up a lot during her first run on the show she was in a really great place last time we saw her before this recast). Blake locks Amanda in the construction shack which should have a phone so she can call to get out. I hope she can. Blake could have been having supper with Ross instead. It would have better served her cause. Rick is subpoenaed by Reva’s lawyer. Reva’s lawyer, Althea Templeton, warns her that Ross will come after her fitness as a mother. Reva: “I’m their mother. I gave them life and for the last 5 years I’ve lived like a damn saint.”

Marah hears the yelling for some reason assumes it’s about her. Marah is acting odd and Annie and Josh realize it. Reva tries to talk Alan to get it. Reva: “Bud can’t give without taking something back. He’s a Lewis and I’m a Shayne.” Reva describes the terrible thing that is always an issue between them. I think she’s quite right about this Josh doesn’t see it. This reminds me so much of the scene where she was moving out of H.B.’s house to move in with Josh and he made her throw out her clothes because HIS wife wouldn’t wear those things that I think is a defining moment in their relationship even more than the fountain scene.

Reva: “I just can’t be beholden to him anymore and that’s the bottom line. Maybe he just can’t see it. Maybe being born golden blinds you to certain things and being born poor lets you see too much. Bud always knew his place in the world and I spent a lifetime looking for mine and I thought that maybe once I had him I’d have everything I needed in life. I’d finally feel strong and safe and secure and that I could do no wrong. He knew I’d be and do whatever he wanted to get him and he was right. Even when we were kids he’d dangle carrots in front of my face. He’d say you be it Reva or we can’t play or put a prettier dress on or I won’t sit  in church with you. I gave Josh my mind, my body, and my soul and I will NOT give him my children so he can make them feel the way I felt my entire life.”

Alan: “Reva, you can find a middle ground.”

Reva: “No, Alan, with Bud it’s all or nothing and that’s the way it’s going to have to be with me. I’m sorry, but I’m moving out.”

Rick and Ed discuss their subpoenas. Rick thinks Ed will be able to claim privileged information and Ed says recent court rulings says that AAA people can be forced to testify about things said in meetings which I think is terrible. I’m going to have to look it up and see if that’s still true. That Ed understands this I totally get, but what does he mean IF? Ed did this same exact thing to protect Michelle from Claire. Rick is exactly right about this. I know Ed thinks Rick is seeing what he wants too, but he’s completely correct. Josh and Reva are getting back together and Annie is just a roadblock. And it’s the not telling Annie that will completely break her.

Annie’s hair is completely gorgeous here. Annie is such a competent nurse. I hate they took that away from her. The old guy’s name isn’t Scottie Hamilton. Scott Hamilton was a very famous Olympic ice skater. I just love it. Amanda is still trapped. Amanda: “Help! Is anyone out that? Help me I’ve been locked inside by a neurotic bimbo!” Now that’s funny. Amanda has an AMAZING fantasy sequence based on Dudley DoRight. Mountie Marler: “What do you expect from the daughter of Snidley Whiplash?” — Amanda: “Now show me while they call you mounties.” Eyebrow arch. LOL

I’m glad that Rick didn’t get his wish about reuniting with Annie, but that is a lovely old married couple squabble. That is a gorgeous wild rose quilt in Marah’s room. That’s terrible lighting in the Alan/Reva scene look at that awful  shadow on Reva’s sweater and then on her face. After Reva poured her heart out about the pain Josh caused how can Alan not get this?

Final Brent Lawrence Terror Part 2 Jan 22 thru Jan 26 1996

December 30, 2016

Picking up from the last post Brent Lawrence has Lucy. That’s the major storyline to me in this next section, but we get some great early Rabby and early Dart stuff. Also, Marcus is cleared, the Reva back from the dead custody fight is going, Matt is blackmailing Amanda into leaving Bloss alone over their experience in California with an escort service. Comment blocks below include clip description, quotes, and my comments.

Monday, January 22, 1996

Abby kisses Rick. Rick insists it’s a practice date. Abby thinks it’s more. Hart takes Dinah’s drink in face. Roger calls the station and tells him all about the Brent/Marian story. Brent hears Michelle and J and goes to investigate. Lucy hears them and yells for help.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQm_D9QjJsI (Part 1)

Brent grabs Lucy to silence her. A-M waits for Brent to control. Amanda offers support. A-M says that he doesn’t want to risk including Frank in his plan to rescue Lucy. Amanda says he has to include the cops. Alan shows up at the office to find out what’s going on. Michelle heard it, but not clearly and lets J talk her into it not being real. Then J makes up a ghost story to scare her. Brent approaches with a weapon, but decides they are not a threat when they make out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBl_NBYDOuU (Part 2)

Abby apologizes for kissing Rick, but he says it’s OK. Rick says he taught Michelle to dance. Abby ran off feeling embarrassed. Hart continues talking to Dinah about Roger. I’d say that neither Dinah nor Hart give a true portrait of Roger. They are both right and wrong. They do angry banter very well. Dinah calls Marcus and asks him to come to Towers. For reasons best known only to her, Gilly has decided to date her mom’s old lover. Holly and Fletcher arrive and overhear Roger. More great banter. Michelle and J continue to make out, but break apart when he starts reaching under her clothes. Brent overhears and rushes back to a hog-tied Lucy refreshed in his belief that every girl leads guys on and then backs off.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPF1Gsky4Bw (Part 3)

Brent bring a knife to Lucy’s throat, but then pulls back not to ruin his plan. Brent tells Lucy how sick it made him to watch J and Michelle (who he doesn’t know). (Kind of made me a little sick too, seeing Michelle kiss someone else in her and Danny’s lighthouse). Alan offers to reach out to a top computer expert to help track Brent, but A-M doesn’t trust the offer. Brent video chats in with more threats. Frank plays an analyzed tape to see if it was Roger. Neither Holly nor Fletcher is 100% it’s Roger. I don’t know how they couldn’t be from the tape alone it’s definitely him. Holly about Roger: “He’s always using fake accents.” Roger stops by Spaulding and finds one of the packets Amanda had put together about Marian Crane. I’m really kind of surprised. Roger can be a jerk, but not when someone innocent’s life is on the line.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgPvzKmiTkA (Part 4)

Rick says he and Abby need to talk about the kiss. Abby shows back up in her Amish clothes. After spending the entire day with J, Michelle came back after dark. Michelle is upset that their date didn’t go well. Griffin feels put upon that Marcus doesn’t rush over to see him. Knowing about Lucy, Marcus is horrified that Roger is about to put out the story to endanger Lucy. (Actually Griffin your description of Roger sounds more than a little like you.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k05-b5nZx44 (Part 5)

Rick starts going off after J. Michelle drags him back. They have a short argument, but then come to terms. Michelle offers to watch a movie with Rick. Rick leaves to get more popcorn. Abby asks Michelle what happens. Michelle believes J’s garbage that it was her fault for leading him on and then pulling back. Cleary finally decides that instead of just taking guesses, they could do a voice print. Hart, Holly, and Fletcher decide to tape Roger and Cleary recommends they go down to the spy store to get equipment to tape it. Marcus tells Dinah she needs to find Roger and stop him from endangering Lucy. Griffin and Gilly speculate wrongly about Roger and Dinah.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bvBLShpZmc (Part 6)

Lucy manages to free herself of restraints. However, Lucy can’t get through the door. So Roger walks into Towers and nobody runs over and tries to get him to call and stop it? Rick and Michelle run across Roger’s WSPR news story. Brent sees himself on camera, just as J spots him makes the ID and yells.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noKgEf6sM58 (Part 7)

Tuesday, January 23, 1996

Around town people are watching the news story. OK if Roger didn’t know about Lucy this makes more sense. Lucy works on getting the door open.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rn2lLoj0PJA (Part 8)

J tackles Brent, but the Mall Cop believes Brent when he accuses J of stealing his wallet and Brent slips away. Michelle said she dropped J off at Springfield Mall and the Bauers have the TV on to watch the movie. This is dovetailing really well. Alan and Amanda try to stop A-M from running off and ripping out Roger’s heart when he learns Roger’s news story might be endangering Lucy. Lucy gets the door partly open and is met by a combination lock and tries to think what the combination might be.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpJDjunpRR8 (Part 9)

Abby volunteers that she saw Det. Cutter and Marian Crane the night she was in the hospital and Rick and her went for a walk. Rick insists she has to tell the police. Actually I don’t think Roger would have played the story if he’d known about Lucy. He might be telling the truth. I thought it was out of character that he did. Roger protests he didn’t know about Lucy and says he wouldn’t have done it. Nick and Susan show up and support A-M. The date of the rape was the combination. Lucy gets into the room and gets on the computer. “Faith comes into our lives on four legs…” She gives proof it’s her, but the tranmission is cut off “he’s holding me at….”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_E59gvEseg (Part 10)

The chief demands to know who told. Cleary confesses she’s the one who told Roger. This time Frank doesn’t let her off the hook. J was dragged in and Nola showed up. J tells Nola that he’d spotted Brent Lawrence. J swears on his car that he’s telling the truth. Nick and Susan talk A-M down from despair. Brent catches Lucy and freaks out. Brent announces he has to kill her and in desperation she hugs him.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7v9GwI44HI (Part 11)

J tells Frank and the Detective Levy everything. They believe him and Nola is proud of him. Michelle and Abby show up and Michelle apologizes to J. Abby tells Frank that she was Det. Cutter and Marian Crane together at the dock which helps confirm Brent’s role. Frank forgives Cleary. Holly is set up to record Roger. Holly pulls Roger away to get her recording. Lucy tries to talk Brent into thinking he convinced her that his view on what happened was right.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3gNdv-XWJM (Part 12)

Dinah goes storming into her and Roger’s apartment upset that everyone blamed Roger when all he was doing was trying to help her friend. Frank shows up and tells A-M about what happened at the mall. A-M assumes Brent caught Lucy, but he didn’t. Lucy says what Brent wants to hear that he didn’t rape her.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fY5_arp6ctc (Part 13)

Frank tries to time out how far out Brent was holding Lucy from the mall. Lucy keeps repeating she’ll do whatever it takes to survive. Hart and Marcus talk about Dinah’s inability to see Roger’s crimes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MnMwcEZlig (Part 14)

Wednesday, January 24, 1996

Alan returns to the house he bought Reva. Alan is upset thinking Roger might have cost Alan Alan-Michael. Reva comes in bubbling with happiness about Marah and Shayne and Josh and Alan lashes out. Roger deposits some of Dinah’s money in an account in only his name (by a guy trying to do some kind of accent I think). Holly and Fletch show up at Roger and Dinah’s apartment – Penthouse A- saying them have proof Roger set up Marcus (which he totally did).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRLtIyh_yjg (Part 15)

Dinah,Holly, and Fletcher keep talking through her front door. Hart and Marcus continue to talk about Dinah. We drop in on Gilly and Griffith’s date (which considering his prior relationship with her mother is kind of gross on both their parts). Hamp is welcoming guests and since Ross is running late, Amanda and Blake end up sitting side by side at the bar. Reva understood Alan’s attack and is very supportive of him. Alan won’t let it go though accusing Reva of being more interested in Josh despite what she says. Meanwhile Josh is upset about Marah, but Annie questions whether he’s more concerned about Marah or Reva?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBt4bP-02dE (Part 16)

Reva pleas with Alan to understand that she needs to be there with her kids and claims it has nothing to do with Josh (Liar!). Josh denies that it’s Reva’s he’s concerned about. Annie and Josh are romantic together. Marah sneaks down and takes Annie’s book to add to her Annie collection. Amanda comes out straight and says that she wants Ross and will do what it takes to get him. Amanda tells Blake that Ross knows Amanda wants him and that she’d already dropped a fur coat with nothing underneath for Ross’ benefit. Holly and Fletcher shows Dinah the evidence. Dinah supports Roger until he hears the recording of Roger telling Holly he can’t get her out of his system.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Namby74Wdw (Part 17)

Ross shows up excitedly and announces Marcus is cleared. Roger walks back in and expects Dinah to back him, but not this time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkFhX_jv3iQ (Part 18)

Dinah spits out that Roger set up Marcus. Dinah faces up to the fact that Roger still loves Holly and calls him out on it. Hamp saw the set up evidence and says he’s dropping the theft charges. Griffin: “There are other ways than direct confrontation.” Josh makes a move on Annie who asks about the kids first and as usual Josh is wrong, they aren’t asleep. Alan comes down and finds that Reva is setting up a seduction. AND this is where Jeva turn truly evil in their actions, Reva and Josh could have walked away from Annie and Alan at this point and no harm, no foul, but no they both swear they love the one they are with severely messing them up.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVanjavteks (Part 19)

Amanda calls for a toast in Ross’ honor. Roger desperately tries to drive away Dinah’s doubts, but this time Dinah has it. Sadly Roger just sounds sickening.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFEvKB0UF6U (Part 20)

We get an Annie/Josh and Reva/Alan montage. Dinah storms off while Hart watches from a distance.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23gUWSRK1q0 (Part 21)

Thursday, January 25, 1996

We start with a nice exterior shot of the Land of Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams house. Annie is feeling great because she thinks Josh was making love to her out of desire for her and not for the desire to hurt Reva. If Josh would have come clean right now, they wouldn’t have broken her. Alan is having similar feelings about Reva on their morning after. Matt and Vanessa are also waking up in bed together. Meanwhile Blake is awake and upset and angrily wakes up Ross. Note: This is a lovely bit showing Ross and Blake’s bedroom.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWs0ZW1tbEo (Part 22)

More bedroom at beginning. Blake tells Ross Amanda told her about the time Amanda had striped in his office. Amanda is alone at the Spaulding Mansion and not feeling too good either. Amanda has a her and Ross fantasy. Alan asks Reva to try to make peace and get shared custody. Reva agrees to try, but before she makes it to the Land of Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams Marah’s therapist calls with a sudden opening and rather than wait until next week Josh takes her in leaving Annie there to deal with Reva.

https://youtu.be/dyoEGZrMZis (Part 23)

Ross is not properly contrite and gets mad when he feels Blake has unjustly accused him. Reva actually plays nice, but when she finds Marah is at a therapist (Dr. Julian) at Cedars she starts to storm off, but Annie stops her. Alan meets with lawyer who withstood Alan’s attempts to buy her off. After Ross storms off, Blake rushes to Vanessa and Matt’s interrupting them in the bedroom to beg Vanessa for advice.

https://youtu.be/mnK37N4DilY (Part 24)

Annie and Reva continue to argue about Marah. Ross goes to Amanda to find out why she wound up Blake and pushes Nettie aside to find Amanda in the Spaulding study in her skivvies while a dressmaker measured her.

https://youtu.be/8P2dqdNkCDk (Part 25)

Blake tells Vanessa what Amanda did, dropping her mink coat in front of Ross. Vanessa: “Well that’s not very original.” (One of the most famous Guiding Light scenes is Vanessa doing that to Ross.) Madame Elliot is the designer. Ross tears into Amanda. I really can’t believe the best way to have the session with Marah is to have Josh sitting there staring at her the whole time.

4:39 Marah’s therapy session

https://youtu.be/SH7LHzmfd9U (Part 26)

Reva bursts in and Marah leaves with the doctor while Josh and Reva tear into each other. I actually don’t think the beeper thing is a bad idea, but the fact is Reva is WAY more concerned over what she wants rather than what’s good for Marah. AND then Josh makes it about himself and loses sight of the kids himself. Ross defends his wife to Amanda and tells her to back off.

https://youtu.be/Iw_REFgOxaI (Part 27) – 123

Annie and Josh bring Marah home and she’s still upset. Marah is about the only soap child they show the effects on them. This period was when Reva wore the prettiest clothes. I just don’t see Vanessa ever wearing those scruffy tennis shoes. This must have been her midlife crisis. Amanda does have a pretty big secret. Not one that fits with the character of Amanda, but it’s a pretty big one.

Friday, January 26, 1996

Blake and Vanessa discuss her issues with Amanda. Matt was also part of the secret. Really Amanda, no way Matt believes he’s going to out you and not out himself. We finally get back to fact that Lucy was kidnapped way back on January 1st. Don’t worry, Lucy isn’t stockholming, she’s scheming.

Brent does a great job describing LAM’s love, but Lucy tries to convince him it isn’t true. I still don’t understand why Lucy was ever snowed by Marion enough to think she was her BEST friend. Blake really does have a self esteem problem and I guarantee Amanda didn’t mean give Ross a child. Matt assures Amanda that she has a lot more to lose than he does, that his relationship with Vanessa wouldn’t be hurt by it.

Someone really should have taken the time to push Amanda’s bangs out of the way, it looks terrible. Alex comes in and is surprised that Amanda has the safe open. Alex couldn’t. Amanda explains she changed the combination. Oh Amanda, you don’t show somebody the original you’re blackmailing someone with. He could grab it and take off. Ross and Blake show up at the doctor’s office for their appointment with Dr. Sedwick. Lucy seems to convince Brent to leave Alan-Michael out of his plans and video chats in to tell Alan-Michael she doesn’t love him, the rape never happened and she wants to be with Brent.

Alan-Michael realizes that Lucy was lying to get Brent out of town and away from A-M. Amanda and Alex fight about control at Spaulding Enterprises. Blake and Ross both get clean bills of health for fertility. She think Blake’s stress levels is what’s causing their issues. Dr. Sedwick suggests Blake talks to Dr. Ames, a psychiatrist. Frankly I think it sounds like a good idea.

Bloss talks about other options to therapy when Blake resists therapy. He suggests taking another cruise like their honeymoon. Blake is excited, but then Ross suggests they need to stop trying to get pregnant to get Blake to a better place first. Matt returns home considering telling Vanessa who is all adjutated about Amanda and how she is going after Ross. She tells Matt that any man who would have anything to do with Amanda was dirt. (Matt, who was involved with Amanda, thinks Gulp!)

Alex calls Vanessa and tells her that Matt left his magazine there showing the house that he is going to build for Amanda. When Vanessa asks him about it Matt admits it’s a lie. Vanessa asks why was he really there. Amanda goes into Spaulding Enterprises and is being very supportive of Alan-Michael. Brent contacts Alan-Michael by chat and tells him to come alone. Brent is going to call A-M at the phone booth on 5th Street where Patrick Cutter was killed.

A-M: “Do not call the police because you’re going to be risking Lucy’s life!”

Amanda: “But what about yours?”

A-M: “My life isn’t worth anything without her.”

Matt tells Vanessa that he just told Amanda to back off and that Amanda covered for Blake. Vanessa is thrilled Matt is so wonderful. Brent comes in and tells a waiting Lucy that they have a celebration to attend before they leave town. A-M goes down to the Spaulding Enterprises parking garage and the man Frank left to keep tabs on A-M reports in when he gets into his car and leaves. A-M is wearing a cloth cap that does him no justice. He’s parked on level 5 and is driving a nondescript new sedan – I can’t tell brand.

Final Brent Lawrence Terror Part 1

October 30, 2015

This didn’t happen on Halloween, but it really should have. The Brent Lawrence/Marian Crane storyline is one of the spookiest that Guiding Light ever did and is well remembered and often mentioned even today. So I’m taking it upon myself to share some of this spooky tale in honor of Halloween.

Although these chunks of episodes aren’t dated beyond the month and year in their descriptions, I’ve added dates. Sadly I don’t have day to day descriptions, but there was a very distinct episode that aired at Christmas last year. Starting forward from that known date and carefully comparing the calendar and known dark days, I’m 98% confident in the dates I’m assigning. See the last batch of this run here:

I’m starting the part numbers over again for this post.

Justin Deas explains why they switched Brents about halfway through this clip:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yrh7RNfO8q8

This post covers the episodes from January 9-19, 1996. The main story is the Brent Lawrence/Marian Cramer meltdown. Brent, who had some reason to complain because Lucy was really dating him while she was still hung up on Alan-Michael, took things way too far. Brent raped Lucy and was furious when Lucy told and he was fired. He attacked them and was believed killed on the docks. Instead Brent’s sister Cassie had helped him to escape. He returned to town and Spaulding Enterprises as Marian Crane. Crane befriended Lucy pretending to be a fellow rape victim and cause many problems over the months, but always leading up to his kidnapping Lucy which happened right before we pick up.

The other big story right now is that Josh found out Reva was alive by finding her in Alan Spaulding’s jet drinking champagne and planning on leaving town and never coming back (she had decided it would be better for Marah & Shayne not to disrupt their family with Josh/Annie). Josh was furious and now Jeva are in full dirty fight mode over the custody/visitation of their kids. The fight gets more vicious throughout these episodes.

This is in the middle of depressing failure of the Quola return. In these episodes we get even further assassination of Quint’s character (now he’s tossing his kids away without so much as a glance back) and Nola is depressed. Said tossed away child, Anthony James Chamberlain shows up and almost immediately starts a romance with his adopted cousin Michelle Bauer.

Connected with the Brent Lawrence story, is the Marcus Williams story because he was under arrest for having killed Detective Cutter, a crime really committed by Brent Lawrence. That also ties in with the Roger Thorpe story. He’s currently married to Dinah Marler to get her trustfund and Dinah refuses to believe the warnings she’s been given and still defends Roger. Hart has come back to town and revenge on Roger for causing his grandfather’s death (which I think Roger was totally guilty of) and part of his plan is to get close with Dinah to break up Dinah and Roger. Meanwhile Bridget hopes Hart is back for her and Peter. — He isn’t.

Abby is living at the Bauers, but is still in her Goshen clothes. Michelle encourages her to dress up to attract a man and it sort of works as she and Rick have a pretend date.

Lucy Held Captive by Brent/Marian

Lucy Held Captive by Brent/Marian

I’m so used to seeing Frank as a detective in a suit, it’s still kind of a shock to see Frank wearing a uniform and working with a partner. Reva with a sudden artistic talent draws an exact duplicate of Brent Lawrence. Alan-Michael realizes this means Brent is alive. Lovely fantasy dance sequence set at the ball. I wish it had been shot a little clearer, but still very lovely. Sadly it turns nightmare at the end.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BTnhR_ItR8 (Part 1)

Dinah tells Hart more about being raised in a circus. Dinah tells him that she had a dog named Beauregard and a chimp named Capone. Also, she tells him she rode animals in the parade especially a favorite lion named Majesty and was the target in a knife throwing act. Griffin tells Gilly about how Vivian was when he knew her as an activist. Lucy wakes up from her nightmare and finds Brent back in full Marian guise near her bed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fF-MpO4r5ok (Part 2)

Josh is on the front porch of the Land of Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams when Marah comes out having been woken up by a bad dream at sunrise.  Alan rushed to get dressed to go and help Alan-Michael despite the fact he’s angry at him. It really is a shame that after all this work in the setup they had to switch Brents. Credits at the end of this part.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TojCOUnVMZE (Part 3)

Reva tries to talk sense to Alan about Alan-Michael. It’s definitely the next morning. Reva explains that she understands because Alan is also dealing with his children and having to deal with being cut off from them when he’d never hurt his children on purpose. Alan-Michael brings the drawing of Brent to the police to convince them that it’s him. Lucy tries to figure out what’s going on with Marian. Marian has Lucy in the Springfield lighthouse. Lucy discovers that she can get out to fog shroud parapet, but not out of it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7A3EkTNcC9w (Part 4)

Annie comes out and is pretty nice about Reva hurting them. Marah resolves to try to like asparagus and to be nice to Shayne. Annie has the stupid idea that Josh being aggressive sexually after seeing Reva meant he was over Reva. Hawk is in the hospital and is malingering. Alex is trying to get him up. Alan-Michael keeps pressing and finally causes them to consider it. We review Brent’s/Marian’s crimes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHItibQr_3A (Part 5)

Marian admits to his crimes. Buzz turns on Alan and then remembers Brent and Lucy being held for trespassing into the Country Club pool. They weren’t arrested, but Brent had his fingerprints taken. Alex tells Hawk all about what Reva did at the ball. Hawk assures Reva that Josh never stopped loving her.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOSH9DIbnCQ (Part 6)

Hawk tells Reva about Josh after her “death.” Even though it’s the day after New Year’s Eve aka New Year’s Day, Springfield is back in business with Josh and Annie going to work and Marah going to school.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFPY78NeZOg (Part 7)

Marian tells Lucy that she killed Nadine. They found the fingerprints that Cutter took and prove that Marian is Brent. Marian reveals herself to be Brent to Lucy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukfmpJ8Dx6E (Part 8)

Josh refutes Hawk’s claim that Josh still loves Reva. Hawk: “This whole thing with Annie Mutton…” Reva runs into Annie literally in the hospital corridor. Marian rips off her face to reveal Brent. Alan-Michael realizes Brent’s sister had to have been in on the deception.

Wednesday, January 10, 1996

Josh has Ross working on straightening out his martial mess. Reva shows her claws to Annie at the hospital. Alan-Michael stops by Susan’s hotel room to catch her and Nick up.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLMbtyYnpB0 (Part 10)

Brent toys with Lucy. Nice effect with the lighthouse calendar in the squad room. Annie and Reva fight in the corridor.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lD6TVOCRLUs (Part 11)

Reva and Annie escalate and Rick intervenes. Annie’s blow to Reva, hit Rick too. Rick to Annie: “All you managed to do was make her angry and with Reva that ALWAYS means trouble.” Nick actually acts like a cousin to A-M for once. Nick agrees to help dig up information and suggests contacting a specialist in criminal behavior. Lucy contemplates jumping off the catwalk rather than let Brent touch her.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pZlxvqUDi0 (Part 12)

Lucy and Brent struggle on the parapet. Buzz apologizes to Cleary and asks to help with the investigation. Reva and Josh meet in the hallway and argue. Josh reminded Reva of their history. Josh: “I want the pain to stop…….I care Reva, I care a lot more than you know.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5N6OfW3bq8 (Part 13)

Rick talks to Annie about her conflict with Reva. Annie is in total denial. Hawk calls Rick over and talks to him about Josh, Reva, and Annie. Brent: “You don’t get to decide when you die. I DO!” Lucy tries to reach Marian in Brent, but fails. He tells her that he set her up because she lied and told people he raped her.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NyLRx7s4pU (Part 14)

Only after A-M suggests it does the search extend to Marian’s work computer. Hawk: “Help you see the writing on the wall.” Rick: “I’ve never been that into graffiti.” Mr. O’Rourke is an assistant DA. He agrees to have

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6fQr5O4nNk (Part 15)

O’Rourke announces he’s arrest Reva instead. Lucy leans on Alan-Michael’s love from afar. Marian’s computer gives a frightening message from Brent.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PFBBGn3tp0 (Part 16)

Thursday, January 11, 1996

Nola and Bridget are in the Reardon Boarding House kitchen. Bridget is on edge hoping Hart will stop by. Hart is stopping by Roger’s to work on Dinah instead. Marah is home from school for a teacher’s conference and is moping around.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsA6-E3m1TY (Part 17)

Reva reacts badly to being arrested. She is charged with being an accessory to bigamy before the fact. Honestly I don’t know how they managed to turn this around. I’m kind of with Alan on this. I hate how Reva and Josh blindly slash out at each other. Nola pushes Bridget to pursue Hart. Vanessa and Matt stop by to take Peter for an outing, but Bridget won’t let him go since Hart is supposed to stop by. Hart and Dinah commiserate about being ignored by their parents.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yg4Jqqz7DN4 (Part 18)

Vanessa, not really having much of a legal leg to stand on, is always very nervous and defensive about other people being involved in Peter’s life. Hart being back means Vanessa is worried that Hart will try to cut her out of Peter’s life. Whenever Nola isn’t happy in her own life she gets very prickily to Vanessa.  Oh come on, Vanessa, get over yourself. Hart should have the right to see Peter if he wants. Even if Bridget wants Hart (duh! she has for years) still not any of Vanessa’s business unless she knows something horrible about Hart we don’t know. Matt and Vanessa reminensce about how Matt looked up to his fun Aunt Nola. That’s ironic Matt, Nola grew up wanting to live ANYWHERE else. Nola brings up her pain over Quint. (Which still he never EVER would have done.) I really like the Land of Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams set. This friends scene between Annie and Blake makes you really sad thinking about what happens later. One of the things Jeva like to ignore later is how Annie was always a strong support for other women in the community. Alan arrives in time to ride to the rescue.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FipJNhL2JbA (Part 19)

Josh and Reva call each other’s bluffs. Josh asks Reva what she said to Annie. Reva tells him how Annie spelled out how they had sex. Nola talks to Matt about how she loved Quint and how much it hurt when he dumped her and how it changed her. Then Matt told her to back off on Bridget, she was a grown up. Bridget holds up against Vanessa not wanting Hart around Peter. Hart talks Dinah into going out to Jessup Farm with him.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uSS6e1zz9I (Part 20)

Blake and Annie have a friendly chat about how much Josh loves Annie. Marah overhears and is upset when she realizes what annulled means. Josh and Reva talk about where they are now. Alan rubs it into Josh that he and Reva are sleeping together. Hart tells Dinah all about the Jessup Farm and then fell through the ice.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KPgaczKi48 (Part 21)

Dinah gets Hart out of the pond. Vanessa and Bridget fight over Hart. Nola talks about her fantasies and her continued pain over Quint. Josh says he doesn’t care. However, Josh reacts coldly to Reva.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=offt80-PzTs (Part 22)

Ross needs to leave. Josh and Reva are still fighting. Marah takes Annie’s four leaf clover pin. Hart finally arrives. Bridget fantasies about Hart. After he collapses, Dinah drags Hart into the farmhouse.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsi2HSkAaQc (Part 23)

Dinah pulls the wet clothes off of Hart.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=offt80-PzTs (Part 24)

Friday, January 12, 1996

Marcus is still under arrest for Cutter’s murder. His father Griffith (who was apparently so upset about his son that he attended the country club ball) drags Ross there to get Marcus sprung. Alan-Michael and Frank continue to fail at locating Brent. Lucy considers her options to escape, but Brent returns wielding a knife.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RjQ8IWOCOo (Part 25)

Dinah covers Hart with lots of layers and then climbs into bed with him to share body heat. Alan-Michael is standing there with his coffee spilled on the floor. Brent tortures Lucy bringing her lunch. Griffin drags in the press. Griffin throws a fit. Frank finds Brent’s sister, Cassie Lawrence.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDuQoUzeF9A (Part 26)

Ross clarifies what’s going on with Levy. Marcus agrees to keep things quiet to help Lucy. Levy agrees to talk to the judge to get Marcus bail without leaking what’s going on. Marcus apologizes, but I don’t think he means it. Levy says he has three children. Cassie resists questioning. Cassie sees the video and finds out Brent is Marian who Cassie thought was his roommate. Buzz fitzes with the toaster to keep his mind off Lucy. The hooker returns to the diner and talks with Buzz. The hooker knew Nadine and reminiscences about her. Frank drags Cassie down and shows her the body from the lake. Lucy remembers Nadine giving her a locket that belonged to Buzz’s mother.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3asafn-GPs (Part 27)

Lucy lashes out at Brent after he details killing Nadine. Brent flashes back on his mother degrading him. Frank ironically commiserates with the family of the killed woman (not knowing it’s Nadine). Sounds like Nadine was a better mother to this hooker girl than to her own kids. Hart declares he’s come around and now appreciates Dinah.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ax1pp6-29c (Part 28)

Hart starts making a move on Dinah. Dinah starts a fire. I love Dinah’s outfit. Lucy yells at Brent while he hears his mother and Cassie admits their mother abused Brent.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbNfAf0WWrY (Part 29)

Alan-Michael rejects Cassie’s attempts to excuse Brent through the abuse he suffers. Marcus has a new bail hearing. Having gotten a fire going and implying to Hart that she wasn’t interested in him, Dinah leaves.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBwvmS2XEig (Part 30)

Levy follows up with the judge as he said. The judge sets a high bail. Dinah shows up in time to hear about her good friend Marcus’s release on bail. Lucy thinks she’s reached Brent, but Brent announces he’s going after Alan-Michael. Seeing the body’s personal effects Frank recognizes them as Nadine’s.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olckuRg9kTI (Part 31)

Nola drags a chair in off the street with David’s help. Frank explains how he knows the stuff is his mom’s.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7A8DWPBjjE (Part 32)

Monday, January 15, 1996

Frank reacts badly and remembers Nadine’s dentist so they can check dental records. Fletcher reassures Holly and then Ben shows up and busts Holly and Fletcher’s chops over kissing in public. Quint calls Nola, but they have a bad connection. Quint is calling to warn Nola that he can’t find J.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02enHa2Deeg (Part 33)

Marcus and Dinah are talking and making peace as good friends. Hart comes in and he and Dinah spar. J comes in and hits on Dinah. Frank shows up crying. At first Buzz is relieved when Frank says it isn’t Lucy, but he’s devastated to realize it’s Nadine instead.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnfOj8cvkrM (Part 34)

Michelle and Bill are also there at Company and Michelle takes an immediate interest in her adopted cousin J. Dinah calls him on the carpet correcting his Egyptology. Bridget confronts Hart that he had promised to take Peter sledding and didn’t show. Buzz breaks down thinking about Nadine. Frank reveals to Buzz that Brent murdered Nadine before they thought she left town.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfYJqO9cQHE (Part 35)

J comes after Dinah again. J asks Dinah if she’s seen places around the world and she says she has. Frank tells Buzz how they identified the body. Buzz explodes after realizing Nadine foresaw her own death.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJNj8b_TYYM (Part 36)

Dinah and Bridget spar over Hart. Ben, Michelle, and Little Billy are hanging out together at Company. Michelle reveals she’s learning sign language to help Abby. Then Abby shows up. Marcus, Griffin, Gilly, Fletcher, Ross, and Holly talk about who might have set up Marcus. They suggest Roger might have been behind the framing. Nola calls J on the carpet. J announces he stupidly is calling himself J not even J. or Jay. Frank breaks down again to Buzz.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4QfL3u4bt8 (Part 37)

The group decides that Roger is probably behind this. Dinah stands up for Roger and storms off when nobody listens. Nola and J continue to talk about why J has just shown up. J says he hit on Quint’s girlfriend. Buzz gives Frank a coffee. Cleary does a Hail Mary over Nadine’s body. Buzz swears they won’t rest until they bring Brent to justice and then bring Lucy home.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fT2y2keR_j8 (Part 38)

Tuesday, January 16, 1996

Nola doesn’t buy J’s story and gets out of him that he was expelled from school. Eleni shows up and Frank tells her about Lucy and Nadine. Buzz adds that Marian Crane is really Brent Lawrence. Brent is typing up a message to try to lure Alan-Michael to him.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jt8qOE5cetw (Part 39)

Brent taunts Alan-Michael over the computer. Brent confesses to Nadine’s murder. Eleni reacts to the news about Nadine.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Prdvp-O7cFI (Part 40)

Quint’s character takes another whack when Nola calls and off screen he announces he doesn’t want his son to move back to him. Eleni continues reacting. Cassie (Brent’s sister) is shocked to hear the recording where Brent admits to killing three people and having Lucy. She messages him on this feed with Alan-Michael and tries to talk him in, but he’s enraged by this betrayal.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0uaNcYy_kA (Part 41)

Cassie gets upset that Brent may come over her and she runs off. Lucy reaches out to Nadine’s spirit for her to reach out and help both her and Alan-Michael. Down at the docks Eleni screams out her pain to God.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zr4UObjYU6A (Part 42)

We see a darling Marina before she moved to California and she turned into a spoiled brat. She’s much more mature here than she will be later.  Eleni thinks she has an answer. ( A bit showing a staircase upstairs behind the bar at Meals and Wheel Dinner.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9j4G8A5jlFM (Part 43)

Nola and J set ground rules for him living with her. Nola decrees that he hast to attend Springfield High. Michelle comes back into an immediate chemistry test with J. It totally fails in my opinion. Look at this typical R.B.’s Michelle reaction. She comes across as an idiot. Oh, hear that plot point drop when they try to convince people adoption’s don’t count and first cousins sleeping together isn’t icky. They will be unsuccessful this time, but later Jammy proves unstoppable. Eleni retells seeing Nadine. After Lucy yells for help, Brent shows up and drags her back to the bed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEb1wF2CyA8 (Part 44)

From above we look down while Buzz reaches out to Nadine. Brent gives A-M instructions to come and turn himself over to keep Lucy safe.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xR9GBwe-nas (Part 45)

Wednesday, January 17, 1996

It’s a new day in Springfield. Alan and Reva are talking while they wait for the lawyer he hired for her. Meanwhile Josh and Annie prepare to fight Reva. Brent has lured A-M to an abandoned ranger station. Althea Templeton is the lawyer Alan hired to represent Reva in the desert. Annie very motherly discusses with Josh whether it was a good idea to let Marah stay home from school?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxi4LqDtOf4 (Part 46)

Ross comes over and Annie and Josh prepare to leave for the courthouse. They are leaving Marah with an unseen “Mary” not sure if housekeeper or babysitter. Josh talks about how they lived in Italy and how great Marah’s Italian was. Brent shows Lucy that a timer is set for a bomb where A-M is.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iKfhvEUp_E (Part 47)

A-M doesn’t beat the clock, but it only shoots snakes not explosives. In a temper tantrum A-M destroys the room and uncover’s Brent’s surveillance camera. They are burying Nadine (with full Eastern Orthodox honors – this is back when the people in town remembered they were different religions), but apparently are doing it so quickly no one could come to the funeral. They are doing some nice, positive Nadine being happy flashbacks.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCNfKiU3Rj0 (Part 48)

Josh does a great example of step 4. The hearing proceeds for Josh and Reva’s divorce. Marah takes her Annie doll and runs away while no one is watching. Brent brags to Lucy his plan is fool proof. Nadine’s funeral ends with Frank laying a single pink rose on the coffin for Harley. Lucy offers herself to Brent to keep A-M safe.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StIQ4gI3UTM (Part 49)

A-M came back and told Frank about what happened in the cabin. Frank heard the recorded card play Lucy’s cry for help. Reva’s lawyer starts wiping the floor with Ross. The judge rules in Reva’s favor with the stipulation that she can’t upset her children.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFJ03fQ36UU (Part 50)

Reva is excited at the prospect of seeing her kids, but Alan is more concerned with making sure Ms. Templeton knows which side her bread is buttered on. Buzz has a conversation with Nadine at her grave. Brent and Lucy try to play each other.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGKt4CFaBh4 (Part 51)

Frank and Alan-Michael argue about the best way to save Lucy. Alan tells Reva’s lawyer that since he’s paying the bills she’ll do what he wants, not what Reva wants. Meanwhile Josh and Annie can’t find Marah. Marah comes into the door and sees Reva, but after a brief confrontation Marah runs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3Q4DgLQX3k (Part 52)

Thurs., January 18, 1996

Michelle is dressing for a date with J and generally acting pathetic. This is something Alan does. He manipulates court proceedings. Marah runs away from Reva and asks Josh to make Reva go away.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtZUKHaZ-ME (Part 53)

Josh has a good father talk with Marah. So Annie is handing out antibiotics without a prescription? Reva asks Annie to let it just be her and Josh with Marah and Josh backs her. Alan is right about that. This Jeva fight is more about them than the kids. J tries to touch Bridget for his insurance payment. She smells the snowjob, but makes him a loan anyway. Nola walks in and finds them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dM1qPcVJ3w (Part 54)

Rick walks in on Michelle trying on clothes for a date. Abby got the idea that Michelle could help her dress up to get Rick’s attention. Bridget backs up J. Reva tells Marah about being a healing woman in Goshen. Reva offers a holistic solution for Marah’s earache and gives Josh instructions for a poultice. Annie stomps down to the carousel. She sees a box of champagne left over from the marriage and is tempted to break her sobriety. Alan overheard and offers his support.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J98lqjgq-qM (Part 55)

Alan and Annie discuss their relative positions. Alan to Annie about Jeva: “Watching them fight is like watching them make love.” Reva’s plan worked and Marah feels better. Shayne comes running in. Josh talks to Shayne who somehow miraculously has kept an unframed photo pristine in his pocket. Reva says her favorite place as a young girl was the walkway in front of the nature center which had embedded stars. Nola claims she wants to save J from turning out as entitled as Quint. (Again, honestly it doesn’t sound like Quint at all.) Bridget: “You haven’t made any mistakes, J is a great kid.” Nola: “Yes, but I want him to be a great man and there are no shortcuts to that.” Michelle and Abby are still trying on clothes in the Bauer kitchen and Michelle has left a mes. With all the false omniscience of a teenager Michelle tells Abby she needs to dress differently to catch a man’s attention.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cAXx48ZK0o (Part 56)

Nola says she’ll pay for the insurance, but that J needs to earn the money. Michelle shows up. Alan continues to try to make a deal with Annie. Reva decides not to push for once in her life and leaves after a decent amount of time. Reva thanks Josh for helping her with the kids and for being a good father.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3Oym84C_Ng (Part 57)

Josh tells Reva that it didn’t go as well as she thought. Reva won’t listen, even though Josh is exactly right. Marah has a nightmare that Reva forced Josh and Annie to leave and took Marah herself.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1S4NsgHchlE (Part 58)

Michelle tries to get J’s attention. It’s kind of embarrassing especially how he only gets interested once he finds out she has a driveable car. Meanwhile Abby had been trying on one of Michelle’s outfits when Rick walks in. Reva finds Alan and tells him how well it went.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BohW4lrOZrw (Part 59)

Friday, Jan. 19, 1996

Rick is clueless that Abby is trying to impress HIM by dressing up. Dinah is on the case to clear Marcus and to find out if Roger stole the money and framed Marcus. Brent reaches out to A-M via computer and Frank discovers him. Lucy is listening to a tape recorder.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiJlQnvjolo (Part 60)

Brent talks to Lucy, referring to Marian as a separate person. Brent drags Lucy in to show her what’s happening on the monitor. Brent: “You could have had a real man instead you got a wimp in wingtips.” Frank begs A-M to let him help. Hart tries to convince Dinah that Roger set up Marcus (which he did). Roger comes back and finds them together.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uesM-8Y6Jo (Part 61)

Rick talks to Abby. Does she have a boy she’s dressing up for? Abby counters what happens on a date? Michelle apologizes for being a bad tour guide when J seems bored. She brings him a beach in winter. J hands Michelle a line about his mother doesn’t understand him. Amanda comes in and wants business. She announces that she’s holding a press conference to announce Marian was embezzling.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCe_0UuZ0L4 (Part 62)

Amanda announces Marian Crane was embezzling. Amanda explains how she knows. A-M brings her up to date and begs her to cancel the press conference. Rick walks Abby through a date. Roger again asks Hart to forgive him and then wants to celebrate his business success with Dinah. Roger: “What am I being blamed for now, winter?”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTdSOY3_zMg (Part 63)

Dinah tells Roger that she just found out he was behind the register right before the money was stolen. Roger says to convince Dinah he is innocent he’ll help get Marcus off. J and Michelle talk about dating. Jay wants to go on to the lighthouse. We don’t see much of the beach and it must not be our normal one because facing the beach the lighthouse is to the left. Normally it’s to the right and the docks are to the left. Lucy is listening to Brent’s recording talking about his plan. Brent caught Lucy listening to the tape. Lucy talks her way out of it and reaches out concerned because he was abused. Brent has brought a dress for Lucy to put on.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dDSQB6jUm4 (Part 64)

Rick and Abby continue walking through the date. “Don’t be sad the movie is over. They’ll make a sequel.” Amanda cancelled the press conference. This scene is more like the real Amanda, nice and competent, not a jerk. We didn’t get many of those with Amanda #2. A-M asks Amanda to look after the country. Lucy tries to reach out to Brent with compassion, but it doesn’t work. Brent says he was punished because he was a man. J and Michelle end up at the lighthouse. He wants to explore.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-cPh4i7GN0 (Part 65)

Rick and Abby’s pretend date continues. Roger left and Hart takes another run at Dinah. Dinah throws her drink on him. Roger tries to get information out of Cleary. It works she spills everything. Roger: “A dead man returns as a cross-dressing killer. Talk about ratings!” J and Michelle talk about whether they should explore the lighthouse further or not.

Watch for the next part soon.

Beverlee McKinsey’s Last Day

January 14, 2015

This story could be called Beverlee McKinsey strikes back. While it is an important day for Alex, her plan to separate Nick and Mindy has worked but Nick is still rejects her as his birth mother. Frankly I don’t blame him, Alex has been pretty horrible to him since she made her “discovery” and degraded Nick’s parents who he loved and gave him a supportive and very happy childhood. But of more of the importance of the day is for the actress not the character.

A typical soap opera actor or actress has a 13 week option in their contract. That means that every 13 weeks the show has the opportunity to fire the actor without consequences or violation of the contract. This is never reciprocal, unless the show lets them go or they and TPTB make a deal to release the contract, the actor has to stay for the entire length of the contract. Beverlee McKinsey had negotiated the rare exception to that, she also had the chance to leave without consequences every 6 months. So Beverlee went on her annual vacation and never came back. It was a huge event across the industry and fandom. Below are her final scenes.

Here’s a later interview with McKinsey from Soap Opera Digest where she discusses leaving:
http://www.soapoperadigest.com/content/wanted-gls-beverlee-mckinsey-0

Nick McHenry is typing in the Spaulding study. Alexandra had tricked Mindy into thinking Nick had deliberately left her at the altar (he hadn’t he was late because of a set up by Roger on Alex’s orders). Alex is still trying to convince Nick to take her place as his biological mother (which she is) by defaming his adoptive family who raised him with lots of love and support and are now dead. No one ever said Alex wasn’t stubborn…or self-destructive. Alex had told Nick he was her son before, but now she’s going to lay everything out and what Mindy did.

Actually I think everything Alex did wasn’t out of love, it was out of hate. Alex hated Mindy WAY more than she loved Nick.

Nick: “Ugh! I,I,I  is it always about you? Is it always about Alexandra Spaulding?”

Me: “Yes, yes it is. I love her, but it almost always is.”

Oh, please Alex, it wasn’t some mysterious sense. It was the fact Nick looked exactly like Lujack. You didn’t like Lujack at first. You didn’t “sense” anything.  Mindy was partly being selfish when she changed the parentage results, but also Nick was much happier before this came out even if you do eventually build a relationship.

Somehow Alex and Nick are in the Spaulding Mansion study and Eve comes in. After Nick accepted it was over with Mindy (right before she came back), Nick got involved Eve again who then went crazy. Roger actually was plotting and used Eve to break up Nick and Mindy on Alex’s orders. That’s exactly what Alex did. Alex was behind both keeping Nick away from the wedding and lying to Mindy so she’d drive out of town. Sadly Alex didn’t think she had gotten back at Mindy and still thinks they aren’t even. If A-M believes this Roger is the bad guy Alex would never do this stuff, his memory is VERY selective. Alex isn’t even covering well here. I don’t know where Alex gets off blaming Roger though, he did exactly what Alex asked.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtT7Vxkrq8g

Alex and Nick are talking. He says he can’t feel for her now. Nick makes the obvious connection between Brandon and his trying to break Eric and Alex up and Alex trying to break up Nick and Mindy. Alex stutters how it isn’t at all the same when it exactly is. Alex goes over to Vanessa’s. Vanessa: “I made a small mistake…and he says he’s going to walk away from what we have.” That right there sums up Fletcher perfectly, that’s what he does. Alex turns everything Vanessa she will need to temporarily take over as President/CEO. She nearly has one more run-in with Nick and watches out the window as Nick pulls away.

I’m not 100% this is the right order, but I think so.
