Bold and the Beautiful Forrester Locations

March 16, 2015

Forrester Creations use the Yavneh Academy, a Hebrew School near the CBS studios, which looks like a faux Tudor mansion, for in the front of Forrester Creations. It includes windows that are supposed to be those famous windows with a stain glass Fs that you see in Eric’s office.

Take a look at the school website for yourself:
http://www.yha.org

Take a look at the school in person:
http://www.yha.org/contact-us/

However, they’ve taken to using the exterior of CBS Studios for the back of the building. They use the loading dock area, the rooftop, and the parking lot of CBS Studios to represent the same areas at Forrester Creations.

Find a map of the LA Studio and where it’s located here:
http://www.cbssc.com/map.htm

This impression of a split personality building has often puzzled fans.Read more about the mansion half in the December 29, 2014 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth. Read more about the CBS Studio part in the January 27, 2014 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

1990s Guiding Light Locations

March 5, 2015

Search for a Springfield Journal

I did a quick search today for a Springfield Journal in hopes that a copy would come up. I still really want one! I’d take a photocopy, a scan anything! Even though I have a Geona City Chronicle and a Port Charles Herald, it’s just not the same. 😦

Sadly a search didn’t bring up any sign of the Journal, sigh, but it did lead to mini-miracle. It DID turn up an article from a Hartford, Connecticut newspaper back in the 1990s which tells how Guiding Light was coming to town to shoot exterior shots and it tells you exactly what buildings they used. I’ve been trying to track down exteriors used over the years and here they are! Please keep an eye out as you are watching clips and let me know if see when an exterior changes so we can work on the dates. These 1990s ones I’ve had the most luck locating.

Jackpot!

A couple of other exteriors were shot in 1994 from Long Island, New York.
https://glmanny.wordpress.com/2011/09/04/1990s-exteriors

This is what I found.

http://articles.courant.com/1996-07-19/news/9607190286_1_springfield-journal-guiding-soap

These establishing shots were taken in July 1996. That was around the time they were airing Dinah and Hart teaming up to drive Roger crazy so look for these locations as you watch and let me know if you see them. I don’t know if they also changed up things like the exterior of Company, Spaulding Mansion, or the Bauer House at this same time for Connecticut locations, keep an eye out and see if they shift before and after that time.

Locations Around Connecticut

Establishing Streetscape = Asylum Street Hartford CT

Towers = Goodwin Square office building, 225 Asylum Street, Hartford CT

Spaulding Enterprises = 100 Pearl Street Gallery, 100 Pearl St Hartford CT

Lewis Oil = New Haven Savings Bank, Can you believe this is their website? New Haven Savings Bank50 S Frontage Rd New Haven, CT 06519

Springfield Journal = Connecticut Post, 410 State St. Bridgeport, CT

WSPR = WFSB-TV’s Broadcast House, Constitution Plaza – Demolished in 2009 😦

Advantage Systems = CityPlace, 185 Asylum Street, Hartford CT (Note as a refresher the article says “Alan Spaulding’s base of operations for his attempts to thwart Buzz Cooper and win the love of Cooper’s wife, Reva.”)

Film of various buildings was taken from the Hartford Civic Center roof.

“Closer to the Goodwin Square building, crew members saw an opportunity — a newspaper honor box. With prop first aid of tape, placards and a fake newspaper, it was transformed into a Springfield Journal box. After mounting the honor box on a 3-foot-tall camera case, Schneider shot it from below with the Goodwin Hotel’s red-stone exterior in the background, creating the illusion that the camera was at ground level. With a plastic branch or reddish- green leaves inserted in the frame, summer became fall.”

tweeted on 2014  Dec 30

The article is right on for what they used for what. I watched them cover the WFSB sign with the WSPR sign

 Cast and Crew listed

Francine Versalie, an associate producer

Rick Dennis, the show’s art director

John O’Connell, Director

Mike Schneider, Camera Man

Linda Mysel, Production Manager

Brett Barry, Crew Member filmed carrying a Towers vest into the front door of building as a member of the waitstaff arriving to work

The total crew assembled were: “Dennis, Versalie, a cameraman, a director, an administrator, a utility worker, two engineers and two prop people set.”

Follow Up

I’ve got an online friend who lives near who said she’d try to get some photos for me. I found specifically that Broadcast House, which was apparently a pretty historic building, had been torn down. I don’t know if any of the others have been lost, businesses moved, or buildings remolded. But I’ll keep digging and I’ll let you know when I find more.

Peapack NJ in the Snow

February 23, 2015

In the final shooting model, Guiding Light shot the exteriors and many interiors in the town of Peapack, New Jersey. In honor of the snowstorms that have been hitting the country, here are a couple of photos of Springfield in the snow.

Mindy Lewis

October 5, 2014

Periodically I post a character descriptions for supporting characters to the Manny story. We visit another one tonight. Find more on the Supporting Characters pages.

Mindy Lewis aka Melinda Sue Lewis – Mindy Lewis was the daughter of Billy Lewis and his deceased first wife. She was granddaughter to H.B., niece to Josh, cousin to Marah and Shayne, and half-sister to Bill and Dylan. Mindy was also important because of her relationship as part of the Four Musketeers. Her other major arc was her epic rivalry with Alexandra Spaulding. We first meet Mindy while she is in high school. She goes through several relationships including both Phillip Spaulding and Rick Bauer. She wins the Sampson Girl contest and becomes a model. She later transitions to fashion designer spending swaths of time in Paris. She had some interaction with Michelle as a child, since Michelle was very close to both Rick and Phillip, but was embroiled in her own issues before Michelle was very old. After that Mindy was in Paris, although Michelle’s friend Marah and Mindy’s cousin Marah moved to Paris to also become a designer so there was probably some communication there although it was mostly off screen. Mindy enters the Manny story again when they all move back to Springfield at the same time. According to the flash ahead, they became close and were included in the wedding party when Rick and Mindy married in 2010.
For a more complete description of the character of Mindy Lewis and her various storylines see:
http://www.soapcentral.com/gl/whoswho/melinda.php

I wasn’t too crazy about Rick and Mindy ending up together. It made sense in a circle of storyline completion and I always like Rick and Mindy together. However, Rick’s best marriage was with Abby Bloom and Mindy’s best relationship (which it was never fully explored) was with Rusty Shayne. Their ghosts prevent me from fully supporting Rick and Mindy. Mindy had several relationships that were just pretty. Her Kurt Coday wedding was one of the most beautiful soap weddings ever (it was a Cinderella theme) and her trip (shot on location) to San Francisco with Nick McHenry led to some breath-taking videos. Over the years Mindy suffered from a variety of poor recasts. The first two Mindys were very good, but the following ones were unconvincing, too old, or kind of annoying. So I was very glad when Krista Tesreau, her original portrayer, was the one who returned for the last few weddings and funerals and the one who came back at the end. I was very pleased with how Manny was accepted into the Four Musketeer group so there was a lot to be grateful in the end.

Locations on The Bold and the Beautiful

May 7, 2014

If you know me online, you’ll know that I have a bit of a love affair with movie and TV show locations. Not only are they fun to visit, they are almost impossible to track down after filming is complete, unless by lucky chance mention in an old magazine or newspaper article or by pulling old filming permits of the area they were in. I was so happy to finally be able to put a location to the real Laurel Falls and I’m still looking for some Guiding Light spots. So I’m ever so happy today to report that The Bold and the Beautiful has released a list of their filming locations.

I found out about it on a Soap Opera Network blog post.

Tootsie Locations

March 24, 2014

I remember watching the Dustin Hoffman movie Tootsie where he played off both stereotypes about soap operas (some they played up, some they exploded) and his own reputation for being hard to deal with as his character of similar demeanor ends up taking on a new FEMALE identity in order to get cast on a soap opera to get money for the project he wants to do. The soap opera element is great fun for fans. (I particularly enjoyed the “swear” jar they had for anytime someone called it a soap instead of a daytime drama as was popular then.) However, Teri Garr who was well known then and Bill Murray who wasn’t were the best parts. I remember coming outside and predicting that the roomate (Murray – we didn’t even know his name yet, although he’d done Meatballs and Caddyshack, neither of which we’d then seen) would be really big.

They shot at various locations around New York City. Find them here:

Me-TV shared this on Facebook: “For all of you Emergency! fans out there, the next time you’re in Los Angeles you can see the original Station 51! Fire Station 51 is in real life it’s Los Angeles County Fire Station 127 located in Carson, CA. The station is still in service with few changes. The second Engine 51 used in the show believe it or not is still in service 40 years later at the Yosemite National Park in California. You can find the engine at the small fire station near the visitors center.”

Show House Update

November 25, 2013

For some reason I missed this when it first happened, but Val @RdBlaz had sent out some photos on Twitter of the show house in October 2013. She tweeted: “my bro is a vol firefighter, he sent me the pics.” It’s unclear whether the fire was accidental or part of a fireman training.

Odds and Ends 29

September 5, 2013

While looking for Guiding Light information, I sometimes find things that I think are of interest relating to other soaps. This collection of Odds and Ends related to various soaps that someone may want to know some time. Look for another odds and ends post soon.

Michelle Stafford (ex- Phyllis Summers on The Young and the Restless) has launched a web series about a fictionalized version of herself.
http://cbs.soapsindepth.com/2013/08/check-out-staffords-new-project.html

Former General Hospital star Chris Robinson is going viral with his son’s class documentary Bankrupted by Beanie Babies.

Have to share this, real books by fake people:
http://theweek.com/article/index/248272/ron-burgundys-let-me-off-at-the-top-and-13-other-books-by-famous-fictional-authors

The May 7, 2012 issue of Soap Opera Digest has a question in the Ask Us section about Sean Ringgold (ex-Shaun on One Life to Live) has appeared in commercials for Nexium (as a construction worker), a Nike Air commercial, and in Jennifer Lopez’s Fiat spot.

OWN lists best ratings ever on its new lineup which is headed up by the new soap The Haves and the Have Nots.
http://www.welovesoaps.net/2013/08/own-delivers-highest-rated-primetime.html

It’s not exactly a soap opera, but it’s a really soapy movie The Princess Bride. A recent anniversary piece lists Higger Tor in the United Kingdom near the Scottish interior border as the location of the steep hill they roll down when he loses his mask. “Reitman: Are you angling the camera at all to emphasize the slope? Reiner: No, it was really that steep.”
http://insidemovies.ew.com/2013/08/16/princess-bride-live-commentary-reiner-reitman-academy/10/

Barbara Eden recently tweeted that the I Dream Of Jeannie: 15 Years Later reunion movie is out on DVD.  The movie was made while Larry Hagman was still big at Dallas and so they got Wayne Rogers (Trapper John MD on MASH) to pinch hit. It wasn’t that great a fit, but it was very like a long version of a Jeanne episode with a twist ending headed to a happy ending off screen.
