The January 30, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest published the Manny photo from Instagram.

Check out “The Guiding Light” pp 42-44 in Daytime TV Yearbook, no. 5 1974. It includes the cast at the time with individual photos and bios.

The November 4, 1986 issue of Soap Opera Digest featured an article on the effect of chaos and switching TPTB behind the scenes. They tell about what’s going on behind the scenes on Guiding Light in the mid-1980s.

I’m sure I mentioned this when this first came out, but I just came across the August 1, 2011 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth. In a feature on characters who get back together to characters after they really should know better, Manny get a page and a half and several photos.

The July 31, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest flashes back to what happened on all the soaps, including Guiding Light, in 1998. Vilasuso did a quick short spot talking about what he has learned watching Justin Deas (Buzz Cooper) and A. Martinez on Days. It’s a nice little shot of how Deas worked. Find it in the March 21, 2016 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Thanks to  itsonlythesoaps for pointing me to these links. This is the electronic press kit that was sent out in honor of the fortieth anniversary primetime special for Guiding Light. They were released to news organizations in hopes that they’d be used as background as part of news stories. I actually like these press kit clips better than the actual anniversary special.

It’s divided into short pieces for easier editing. I’ve added short notes and descriptions to help you find particular points. I’ve listed the people the first time they speak in each clip. They often come back on later in the same clip. I hope you enjoy them.

On the Set of Guiding Light

October 1, 2014

They say:

“A Documentary that aired on PBS station NJN in 2009 that takes you behind the scenes of the classic CBS Network Soap Opera “The Guiding Light” with Justin Deas, Crystal Chappell, Beth Chamberlin and Ricky Paull Goldin.”

When this was originally posted Frank Dicopoulos (Frank Cooper) objected. He had hoped to sell it to other PBS stations. I think at this point that is no longer a concern, so I’m going to go ahead and do this post pointing to it.

They take you through the process for episode 14815. It’s when Beth has Alan and Gus captive. It was shot sometime between December 29, 2005 to March 10, 2006 during the storyline. Although it was aired in 2009, it was actually shot before the format switch.

Part one includes – the lobby and exterior of the studio, the sign in process, make-up room and artists (Paul Gebia and Joe Cola – the head), Crystal Chappell (Olivia Spencer), the hair department (Linda – no last name given), John Driscoll (Henry “Coop” Cooper), Rehearsal Hall- the episode being rehearsed is number 14815, Beth Chamberlain (Beth Raines Spaulding), Ron Raines (Alan Spaulding), On set, Joseph Cotugno (Director), Ricky Paull Goldin (Gus Aitoro), Elana Slott (Time Keeper) – They aim at 57 minutes 20 seconds is the perfect length of show with commercials, they said 38 minutes 20 seconds, but 37 is closer to what they really were running, Charles Grayauskie (Associate Director), Company set (classic), Eric Shuttlework (Boom Operator), Nick no last name given (Assaint Boom Operator – he pushes boom base around), Justin Deas (Buzz Cooper), Camera Blocking, Wardrobe, Shawn Reeve (Costume Designer), Nicole Forester (Cassie Layne Winslow Lewis) who shows off her knitting

Guiding Light Cast Round Up 67

June 29, 2014

This is the sixty-seventh in an irregular feature where we will report updates on what cast members of Guiding Light are doing now. I’m playing catch up on some soap magazine news. So as a reminder you can buy back issues:
https://glmanny.wordpress.com/2014/06/07/faq-back-issues-2014/

recently tweeted a Soap Opera Digest classic cover featuring the Stenz Manny from May 18, 1999.
https://twitter.com/kyleo71/status/479824756188139520/photo/1

The 10 years ago story in the April 7, 2014 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth was about Michelle forgiving Ed for his role in Maryanne Carruther’s death and his actions to cover it up see it with a nice father daughter photo in the issue.

The flashback year of 1998 was featured in the June 9, 2014 issue of Soap Opera Digest. “After Joie Lenz made a Guiding Light splash as teen Clone Reva, she was tapped to replace Rebecca Budig as Michlle Bauer. Marj Dusay (Alexandra Spaulding) and Mary Kay Adams (India von Halkein) were rehired; Cynthia Watros (Annie Dutton) quit and was replaced by Signy Coleman: Paul Anthony Stewart (Danny Santos) and Brittany Snow (Susan LeMay Cooper) joined the cast.”

Ruby Dee (Martha Frazier, part of the groundbreaking first African-American core family) has passed away.
http://www.welovesoaps.net/2014/06/ruby-dee-dead-at-91.html

Karla Mosley (Christina Boudreau, with Remy, one of the last really good new couples in the final years of Guiding Light) shared her school memories with photos as part of a round up in the Sept. 9, 2013 issue of Soap Opera Digest. Mosley also told her the story of her first day on The Bold and the Beautiful where a miscommunication only gave her a half hour to get hair and make up done before she had to be on set. Read the whole story in the Feb. 10, 2014 issue of Soap Opera Digest. Mosley will appear in at least a total of 8 episodes of Hart of Dixie this season. Read more about it in the April 7, 2014 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth. Mosley also told her new system to make her husband feel better about her making out with other men on screen in the June 9, 2014 issue of Soap Opera Digest.
Mosley recently tweeted: “Over $10K raised for homeless kids w/ . No music. No poncho. No stops. No filter.  ”
https://twitter.com/karlamosley/status/480508615850074113/photo/1

Lawrence Saint-Victor (Remy Boudreau) answered a round up question in the Oct. 21, 2013 issue of Soap Opera Digest about his first love scene. This was the Inside the Light episode where Alan Spaulding had supposedly come up with a magic, temporary memory eraser based on a novel by Henry “Coop” Cooper. There were several unlikely new couples of various kinds chemistry tested during the episode. My favorite was that Alan and Beth assumed they were father and daughter, this was when Alan wanted her to marry him. Then afterward it never happened.
“My [first] love scene on camera might be one of the most uncomfortable love scenes in daytime history. It was [on Guiding Light] in an episode where it was our first time experimenting heavily with the single-camera thing. It was a stand-alone episode where a lot of people lose their memory, and Remy and Lizzie, played by Emme Rylan [Lizzie Spaulding], wake up and they don’t know who each other is, but they’re in the bathroom and she wakes up with her head on his leg while his pants are down. There were no covers, no beds. I’m not going to tell who said this, but a producer on set that day was like, ‘This isn’t lovemaking, you’re *******’ and we’re like, ‘Oh, snap [laughs].’ And then, my grandma and little cousins were watching [when the episode aired]! They didn’t know what was coming up, and then it was like – BOOM!”

Terrell Tilford (David Grant #3, brother to Gilly, son of hospital administrator Charles, friend to Bridget, coupled with Vicky Spaulding) read a feature about his new role on The Young and the Restless in the June 9, 2014 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Jane Elliot (Carrie Marler, Ross’ beloved wife who went crazy) got a wardrobe revamp by former Guiding Light and current General Hospital costume designer Shawn Reeves. He said that in New York there is a whole range of clothing stores for a range of types and styles, but not so in LA. “In LA, it’s a little more specific. Obviously, the weather is more conducive to wearing lighter clothes. It’s a different look. So when it comes to a character like Tracy, that kind of person doesn’t really exist in Los Angeles anymore, so buying clothes for her is a little more challenging because the stores just don’t really carry her type of stuff, and if they do, it’s just prohibitively expensive and I can’t afford it in my budget. So it’s easier for me to go to one of the wonderful fabric stores in LA, buy the appropriate fabric and havee Maki, my stiticher, make these beautiful clothes for me. She made some wonderful new jackets for Tracy and other new pieces for her closet.” Read the rest of the story in the Oct. 14, 2013 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Daniel Cosgrove (Bill Lewis #4, part of the wonderful Bizzie pairing) was the subject of a feature article about his new role on Days of Our Lives in the March 3, 2014 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Crystal Hunt (Lizzie Spaulding Lewis #5 brought in Roxie the dog and romanced Coop) is going to be in “23 Blast” coming to theaters October 2014.

Hunt (Lizzie Spaulding Lewis #5 brought in Roxie the dog and romanced Coop) has been charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon over an incident in December 2013 at a LA bar.

Kassie DePaiva (Chelsea Reardon, Maureen and Nola’s little sister) has just been cast as Eve Donovan on Days of Our Lives. They recently showed “Eve’s” high school yearbook and it included a high school photo of DePaiva. This detail was tweeted by

Frank Grillo (Hart Jessup #5, the final Hart that was torn between Dinah and Cassie) costarred as ubervillain Crossbones in Captain America: The Winter Solider. He’s now a logo figurine.

Grillo will also be part of the new movie “” releasing on July 18, 2014.

Grant Aleksander (Phillip Spaulding #2, the one we knew most of the time) was featured in the classic quotes section of the Oct. 14, 2013 issue of Soap Opera Digest.
If I’m being honest, I took the part mainly because of the money. If the character hadn’t been as interesting. I would have done it anyway. You’ve got to put bread on the table.” – Aleksander on joining Capitol as DJ originally printed in the March 10, 1987 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Brody Hutzler (Zachary Smith, Michelle and Vanessa’s Angel) was the subject of a feature interview in the Oct. 14, 2013 issue of Soap Opera Digest. He reflects on his acting career both soap and non-soap, focusing on his latest role in the movie Wonderland that was released last year.

The Feb. 10, 2014 issue of Soap Opera Digest included a round up of soap stars and their pets including Karla Mosley (Christina Boudreau, with Remy, one of the last really good new couples in the final years of Guiding Light) and her two cats, Scooby and Scrappy and Kassie DePavia (Chelsea Reardon, the youngest Reardon daughter) and her dog Mochi. See photos of these and other stars in the issue of Soap Opera Digest.

It lists her early appearances including the film Namu, the Killer Whale, the TV movie Island of the Lost, and guested on shows like Flipper, Gentle Ben, Daniel Boone, The Farmer’s Daughter and The John Forsythe Show. On Daniel Boone she played a childhood sweetheart to Israel Boone, Daniel Boone’s son, played by Darby Hilton see a photo in the Feb. 10, 2014 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Taye Diggs (Sugar Hill, who was a spoiler for Deliah/Marcus and was part of the Drew Jacobs introduction story, he was a music producer) was part of the star filled party when Bosideng opened a pop-up shot in Manhattan, see a photo in the April 7, 2014 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

Matt Boomer (Ben Reade #3, who paired with Marina Cooper) spoke at “The Great American Songbook” even honoring talent agent Bryan Lourd. See a photo on the April 7, 2014 issue CBS Soaps in Depth.

Ashley Peldon (Marah Lewis #2) got a shout out as Mara Levinsky‘s second favorite soap kid ever “I loved wee Ashley Peldon as Guiding Light‘s savvy Marah” in the March 3, 2014 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Robert Newman (Josh Lewis) is quoted in the “You Heard It Here” section of the March 3, 2o14 issue of Soap Opera Digest. “I hated General Hospital, I hated being on it, I hated working in that situation and I hated the character I played.” Newman was originally quoted in the July 25, 1989 issue and the role he was talking about was his short time as Prescott Harrell in 1985.

Beth Ehlers (Harley Cooper #1) also was quoted in the March 3, 2014 issue of Soap Opera Digest, “You Heard it Here” section. “I got very stupid during my pregnancy. My hormones were so strong, my brain couldn’t absorb information. I couldn’t read anything deeper than People Magazine. I would read the same line over and over, and not understand anything. I had to tell people ‘You have to slow down for me because I am stupid.'” Ehlers was originally quoted in the November 23, 1999 issue.

The March 3, 2014 issue of Soap Opera Digest includes a roundup of late in life marriages including Buzz Cooper and Lillian Raines from Guiding Light and Nancy Hughes and Dan “Mac” McCloskey on As The World Turns.

The June 9, 2014 issue of Soap Opera Digest includes a roundup of marriages that married three times including Billy and Vanessa Chamberlain Lewis from Guiding Light that married in 1984, 1993, and 2009.

Rick Hearst (Alan-Michael Spaulding #3) was featured in a LONG “You Heard It Here” quote in the June 9, 2014 issue of Soap Opera Digest. The quote is about he changed his name from Herbst to Hearst to do better in the business and how he never heard the end of it from his grandmother once Rebecca Herbst got on General Hospital. The quote was originally published in the Oct. 14, 2003 issue.

Guiding Light Cast Round Up 53

January 26, 2013

This is the fifty-third in an irregular feature where we will report updates on what cast members of Guiding Light are doing now. I’m playing catch up on some soap magazine news. So as a reminder you can buy back issues:
https://glmanny.wordpress.com/2010/11/27/faq-back-issues

As previously reported luncheon was organized in New York City to celebrate Guiding Light’s 75th Anniversary. Check out the great photos of cast members across many years in the November 19, 2012 CBS Soaps in Depth.

A collection of photos of our favorite soap stars when they were on Loving, includes a group shot including Paul Anthony Stewart (Danny Santos), Laura Wright (Cassie Layne Winslow) and Roger Howarth (who played Jory Andros on GL in 1992).

Tammy Blanchard (Drew Jacobs) appeared in the movie Union Square as listed in the July 16, 2012 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

Paul Benedeti (Jesse Blue) is interviewed in the November 19, 2012 issue of Soap Opera Digest about his recent returns to The Bold and the Beautiful where he plays the husband to Tracy Melchior (Kristin Forrester). Last year they offered to even fake up a Christmas card and they were turned down, this time they made an appearance. Benedeti who has been the one of the Dresse-Manny quad that has been the hardest to get news about talks about what he’s been doing (apparently he really is an artist now). Here is a small quote. “You know, it’s a really brutal world out there, you tend to forget what a pleasure it is to have a job on B&B. Even Guiding Light which I complained about for many years, was pretty much a grand slam compared to the real world. After B&B, I was out of acting and living in Florida. I tried everything from real estate to multi-level marketing to producing to a lot of different things and it was never as easy as doing soap operas…Now my art career is going really well and I got to come back to  B&B.”

Guiding Light Cast Round Up 47

May 9, 2012

This is the forty-seventh in an irregular feature where we will report updates on what cast members of Guiding Light are doing now. I’m playing catch up on some soap magazine news. So as a reminder you can buy back issues:
https://glmanny.wordpress.com/2010/11/27/faq-back-issues

Paula Garces (Pilar Santos, Danny Santos’ little sister) was featured in the April 22, 2002 issue of People. Garces was featured for playing characters younger than her age. In 2012 she has continued to appear regularly on primetime episodic television. Judging from the photo, she’s no longer playing teenagers.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0305519

Ryan Brown (Bill Lewis III #4, who played Little Billy during the Bilar romance which crossed heavily with Manny) is featured in the “Where Are They Now?” in the March 20, 2012 Soap Opera Digest. I thought I knew a lot about him, but in this piece I learned his mother is author Sandra Brown and he met his wife Victoria Arbiter, who’s the “royal contributor” for The Early Show on CBS, while on Guiding Light. Find the article in Soap Opera Digest and check out his author page. http://www.ryanbrownauthor.com

In the February 3, 1997 issue of People Jerry ver Dorn (Ross Marler) was quoted as saying “I’m thoroughly convinced that we could go back to 1937 , do this in front of black drapes and if the story is good enough, they’d still watch. He didn’t know pretty much they’d be back to black drape without the good story to back them up all too soon.

Marcy Rylan (Lizzie Spaulding Lewis #6, part of the wonderful Bizzie pairing) was the feature interview in the April 23, 2012 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

Brian Gaskill (Dylan Lewis #2) was interviewed about his poetry album on Soap Central.
http://soapcentral.com/radio/news/2012/120316-gaskill.php

I found in the New York Times archive that Elizabeth (Betty) Rea died on December 23, 1999. She was the casting director of Guiding Light from 1970-1996 which would have included casting most of the iconic characters from the middle run of the show. During 1979-1983 she fulfilled the same function simultaneously on As the World Turns. She was inducted into the Soap Opera Hall of Fame. She had also won the Soap Opera Digest Editors Award and the Casting Society of America’s Hoyt Bowers Award.

Joan Collins (Alexandra Spaulding #3) was interviewed about her role on Guiding Light in the November 4, 2002 issue of People. She said her biggest challenge was keeping “25 pages of dialogue in your head.” Cue cards weren’t allowed on set. “We rehearse five scenes and shoot them one after another. It’s like opening night at the theater.” – Find it full text in the Ebscohost Academic Search Complete.

The Harlem School of Arts provided a group of their students to be Michelle Bauer and Bill Lewis’ classmates appearing both at the prom and the graduation ceremony in 1997; among them: Letesha Hallet-Ridley, Wema Harris, Joanna Goodwin, and Tracy Johnson. A group photo was included in the July 5, 1997 issue of New York Amsterdam News. In 2012 none of those names are included in IMDB except Tracy Johnson which had too many with the same name to be sure if it was the same one.

I found an article in the 12/6/2007 issue of New York Amsterdam News that Vannessa Simmons, the oldest daughter of Rev. Run aka Joseph Simmons of Run-DMC) had gotten a role on Guiding Light. A little digging turned up her character was named Lola. I don’t know anything else about her.
http://www.tvfanatic.com/2007/08/vanessa-simmons-sheds-guiding-light-on-new-character

Hanne Lynn Anderson‘s marriage was announced in April 3, 2011 issue of The New York Times. Anderson, now. Mrs. Jack Vaughn Jr., had won an Emmy for multiple camera editing as a video editor on Guiding Light in 2008.  As of 2011, she was a senior video editor at R/GA a digital advertising agency in New York. She has a few credits on IMDB.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1950756

Beth Chamberlain (Beth Raines Spaulding #2) gave a quote out during Guiding Light’s 70th Anniversary year. It appeared in the January 22, 2007 issue of Television Week. She talked about her experience meeting fans during her book tour for Loreli’s Diary. “Everywhere I went, there would be three, four generations of women there, and the great-grandmother had gotten the grandmother into the show, who got the mother into it. When I got back from that, I had a completely different perspective about being part of Guiding Light. I’m not just a part of a TV show, I’m part of mother-daughter tradition. It made me appreciate my job.”

Mark Schlereth, an ESPN analyst and former guard for both the Redskins and the Broncos, played detective Rock Hoover starting in 2007. Watch for him.

Mark Pinter (Mark, who had affairs with Amanda Spaulding and her biological mother Jennifer) and Colleen Zenk (Barbara Ryan on As the World Turns) are quoted in an article that discusses the real story behind their being married to other people and dumping them for each other. They married in 1987 and they divorced in 2010. Read more in March 20, 2012 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Beth Ehlers (Harley Cooper) and Mark Derwin (A.C. Mallet #1) discussed their relationship. Ehlers left her first husband for Derwin. They never married and even though they left  Guiding Light together and were in a couple of other projects together, they broke up before very long. Read more in March 20, 2012 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

After Kassie DePaiva (Chelsea Reardon, the youngest Reardon daughter) left Guiding Light, she took over the role of  Blair on All My Children. She got involved with costar James DePaiva. They both divorced their then current spouses to be together in 1993. The DePaivas are still together. Read more in March 20, 2012 issue of Soap Opera Digest. DePaiva tweeted a photo of her and her husband and former One Life to Live costar Nathan Fillion.
https://twitter.com/#!/KassieDePaiva/status/198913373147119616/photo/1

James Lipton, best known for  hosting Inside the Actors Studio, played a doctor (still looking for a name) on Guiding Light. He wrote scripts and apparently became head writer at one point.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0513851/bio

Jack Wood, a director of many soap operas including Guiding Light, died at age 82 as reported in the February 25, 2007 issue of the New York Times.

Cheryl Lynn Brown (Chrissy Blake Bauer, as a girl) was tracked down by People magazine for their March 14, 1994 issue. Brown was then a sophomore at Kean College in New Jersey. Then 20, Brown says “I got the part because I looked like the actress who played my mother.” Brown has no further entries in IMDB.

Donna Swajeski (Guiding Light writer) was interviewed in the August 1999 issue of Victoria magazine. “Everybody comes up to me when they find out I write for the soaps. Usually they want to know how I started and how I keep coming up with new ideas,” says Donna. Twice nominated for an Emmy, Donna is a member of the five-person writing team responsible for this immensely popular CBS Soap Opera. “We meet weekly to create an overall story, then each of us crafts a day.” Find the rest of the article in Victoria or in Ebscohost Academic Search Complete.

Scott Bailey (Sandy Foster, the fake Jonathan Randall) and his new bride Adrienne Frantz (Amber Moore on The Bold and the Beautiful) have recently appeared on HGTV’s makeover show Design on a Dime. They redid their dining room as a 1920s speakeasy. Read more about it in the March 20, 2012 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Tom Pelphrey (Jonathan Randall, one of Reva’s sudden sons) is currently on Broadway in an American production of a British hit, Somewhere Over the Rainbow. It’s a play about Judy Garland‘s final months. See an article about it in the April 23, 2012 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

The April 23, 2012 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth has photos from 3rd Annual Indie Soap Awards. Signy Coleman (Annie Dutton #2/Terri DeMarco), Michael O’Leary (Rick Bauer #5) Tonja Walker (Marie), Frank Dicopoulos (Frank Cooper), and Orlagh Cassidy (Doris Wolfe, DA).

The Feb. 28, 2012 issue of Soap Opera Digest did a round up of actors who were on soaps and moved on to primetime, including:

  • Bethany Joy Galeotti/Joie Lenz (Michelle Bauer Santos #4 of Manny fame) to One Tree Hill.
  • Matt Boomer (Ben Reade #3, who paired with Marina Cooper) moved on to Chuck and White Collar.
