1. In the Beginning…

NOTE: If you are having trouble with links, read this:

The following is a list of episode descriptions of the Manny story as it progressed day to day. It is based on the daily recaps from Soap Central, recently watched clips, and my own memories. I have also included particularly good quotes from the show by Danny, Michelle, or other people. Periodic mentions are made of other characters or non-Manny related events to help keep track of where the rest of the story is and make clearer what’s going on when other people interact with Manny.

I post these descriptions first to blog and then put them in chronological order on these pages. I will change or update links if I find better copies online. I will show preference to links of the entire, unedited episode, but many of the Manny scenes online have been edited together, so may show scenes from multiple days. I may also include 2 links, even if some scenes are repeated, if I find that two different edited sets each contain some unique scenes.

I’m posting only the descriptions and links on this page, if you want to read my comments, look up the blog entries. My comments appear below the descriptions in the posts in italics. For that version, start here and page forward:
https://glmanny.wordpress.com/2009/10/12/begin-at-the-beginning

I have also started to put a link to the relevant blog post below each set of episode descriptions, so you can also find my comments that way.

I would especially like to thank Freckles337 who has posted the most complete and chronological set of highlights of the Manny story to YouTube.

In the beginning….

The story for me really begins with the arrival on our screens of Mick Santos. Mick was a troubled young man with a hatred of hypocrites and a willingness to do anything illegal from muggings to protection rackets to blackmail. As a result no one in town liked Mick and I must admit this is how I think of him now that I’ve taken Danny’s view of his brother into account and softened my own view. I didn’t like him at all when he was alive. They set up his introduction in a such a way that I was prepared to be blown away by a Roger Thorpe type villain, but instead once he started talking he came across as a violent little punk. The best thing about Mick, and it was all off camera, was his love for his younger brother Danny, who he helped pay his way through college and encouraged him to continue with his education. (I truly believe that if Danny had told Mick his secret ambition to get his MBA degree, Mick would have supported and backed him against their mother.) He told Danny a highly edited version of his life which included flirting regularly (actually it was kind of perverted sexual harassment) with Michelle Bauer.

The episode summaries really start with Mick’s death, so this is just to catch you up to that point. The following events were spread over a couple of months. Previously, Mick accidentally found and then bought Ben Warren and Blake Thorpe Marler’s in bed tape (they all seemed to think it showed she wanted Ben which she had repeatedly denied to her husband, his half-brother Ross – personally I didn’t think it showed that much, but I know when I’m outvoted) and blackmailed them.

Drew Jacobs also had hired Mick to be a ringer in poker games against Jesse Blue (Drew was trying to keep Jesse in debt and tied to her). Mick loan sharked Jesse some money, then mugged him and took $500 Jesse had borrowed off of Buzz Cooper to make a payment on the loan. Jesse did not realize that it was Mick who mugged him, but eventually came to suspect him. Mick blackmailed Drew to get a job at Millennium and came up to Michelle Bauer outside the Cooper 5th Street dinner and told her she had a perfect face in a very creepy way. Michelle tries to avoid him after that, but when they are together, he always makes inappropriate remarks.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6-qWUygKco (Mick and Michelle in Alley)

Most of Michelle’s attention is turned to her relationship problems with Jesse Blue and Drew Jacobs. Her boyfriend Jesse who she thinks should be her true love is uncomfortable in her world and nothing seems to work out for them. They would say this was because of outside forces, but really the problems seem internal to me. Jesse just can’t feel comfortable being himself around Michelle and her family and friends no matter what he says or does. Really no matter what anybody else does to them, most of their problems come back to that. Jesse is comfortable around Drew. So comfortable that no matter what horrible, awful stunt Drew pulls on Michelle, he not only forgives Drew, he actually berates Michelle if she criticizes Drew too strongly (Sorry doesn’t sound like a man in love to me – at least not in love with Michelle.)

The latest obstacle to Michelle and Jesse’s (Messe’s) couplehood at the moment is a disagreement with what to do next. He wants to move in together and get married legally soon (they took “wedding vows” of sorts together in the lighthouse before they had sex for the first time when she left him to go to the school for the blind), she waffles, but mostly wants to keep things as they are. It ends up that Jesse will move into the apartment next to Drew’s alone (where did that evaporate too?). This decision makes Michelle and Drew decide that they need to have it out and establish some ground rules over Jesse in private. They decide to meet later at the beach….

There was a man sitting at the bar interested in Selena, Mick told him that he could have her for a price. Later, as Selena was bringing the man a drink, he offered her money — Buzz stepped in to defend her, but she disappeared. He found her outside crying and upset that no matter what she does people still think of her as a prostitute.

Fri., Oct. 30, 1998 – At Millennium, Drew was upset when Selena informed her she’s taking two weeks off to look for her daughter. (A box of Drew’s belongings that has her baby picture in it — it’s the same one of Selena’s daughter.) Drew told her not to bother coming back and got nasty with her. Selena begged Drew to look at the picture of her daughter and explain how she could be so cruel, but Drew doesn’t see the photo. Meanwhile, Michelle shocked Jesse by telling him that she wasn’t moving in with him — “it just doesn’t feel right”. Jesse at first blamed Rick and then more forcefully Bill Lewis for somehow changing her mind, but then asked Michelle to marry him thinking she wanted more of a commitment and to do it right. Turns out she doesn’t want that either. She turns down Jesse’s proposal, as she puts it temporarily, because they just aren’t ready yet. (Jesse, it’s called she’s just not that into you. Wake up and smell the coffee.)

Wed., Nov. 4, 1998 – Michelle informed Drew that she turned down Jesse’s marriage proposal — but only temporarily. She suggested that since Drew would be Jesse’s neighbor in the twin apartments above Millennium, they needed to talk and settle things for good in private. Drew agreed and asked Michelle to meet her at the beach. Once Drew got there, she ran into Mick whose “connections” had quickly gotten him released from jail. He had followed Drew to the beach and he was looking for revenge. After some threats, he started to attack her. Michelle showed up and told him to stop — resulting in him going after her. Mick started dragging Michelle off towards his car, cracking jokes, suggesting he was going to rape her, and maybe worse. Mick: “You messed with me Drew and now I’ll mess with your pretty little friend here. I like a girl who gives it as good as she gets and babe you’re going to get it real good. Let’s go for a ride just the two of us…Now you can relax Drew you’re off the hook. I’ll take what you owe me out of your pretty little friend.” As Michelle struggled to get away, Drew hit him over the head with a rock — which only attracted his attention back to her — and then Michelle hit him with the rock. Mick was knocked out and falls to the ground. Both girls ran off terrified, certain Mick would be right on their heels.

Thurs., Nov. 5, 1998 – After they knocked Mick out cold, Michelle and Drew ran back to Millennium. They told Jesse and Bill about Mick’s attack and Jesse said he’d take care of Mick. Sam Dietz showed up looking for Mick. He had a meeting with Mick and couldn’t believe Mick would miss the meeting. Drew quickly made up a story about him being at a concert and the other 3 jumped in with details. Dietz leaves an angry message for Mick. When Drew and Michelle are alone again, Drew told Michelle to keep her mouth shut. She didn’t want Jesse to know that they were going to talk about him on the beach or about her connection to Mick. Suddenly realizing that it’s been awhile and if Mick was mildly hurt and angry he should have been back by now, Bill suggested that they go to the beach to find Mick and make sure he wasn’t bleeding to death. Drew was reluctant, but they all went.

Fri., Nov. 6, 1998 – Back at Millennium and concerned they couldn’t find Mick, Bill urges Drew and Michelle to stop blaming each other for what happened and instead, go to the police. Jesse assures both women that he will protect them from Mick. Jesse also suggests that they go into hiding until he can find the drug dealer. Later, they hear a news report that Mick’s lifeless body has been found.

Mon., Nov. 9, 1998 – Michelle and Drew realize from the WSPR broadcast that they have killed Mick. A Springfield police officer comes around asking questions, making them all a little nervous. Everyone gets more uneasy when Michelle is questioned, since she said that she had a problem with keeping quiet about what happened on the beach. After the officer leaves, the four make a pact that they will keep this secret forever, and that they need to protect each other. (Forever lasted about 2 months.) No Manny in part 1.

Honestly I’ve been having trouble finding this day’s episode. I’m sure I saw it before. I’m not going to dig more right now, but hopefully I’ll find it some time. (11-7-2018)

Wed., Nov. 11, 1998 – Drew demanded that Michelle keep her mouth shut or they would all be in danger. Rick showed up at Millennium and was glad to hear that Jesse and Michelle weren’t moving in together — he asked why she didn’t come home the night before. Drew stuck up for her, claiming Michelle was moving in with her. Michelle almost blew the cover story when she told Rick she couldn’t stop thinking about Mick’s awful death and seeing his body. Rick hadn’t seen Mick’s body on the news, but the others covered.

The foursome first peg him as another cop, but are shocked to learn he is Mick Santos’s brother and that he’s there to find his brother’s killer. The new bartender Drew just hired to replace Mick, strangely quits, and Danny offered his services to Drew with a great speech about his ability behind a bar.  She hired him, but told him that it was only temporary. Danny’s first day!!!

Danny: “It’s going to be tough to sell drinks without a bartender…You need a drink jockey you got one…I can make a martini that James Bond would die for, shaken not stirred. Mon., Nov. 16, 1998 – Michelle is studying at a table in Millennium. Danny is watching her from the bar, but she won’t look at him, apparently a relatively novel event in Danny’s experience. (Danny later tells Michelle that standing there watching her he could see into her soul; how full of goodness and love she was and he knew then he wanted to be with her.) He poured two glasses of water and joins Michelle at her table giving her one of the glasses. Danny tries to talk to her, saying he doesn’t know what she’s doing there with these people, that she was clearly so much better than they were. Danny asks Michelle to help him find his brother’s killer, Michelle gets nervous and walks away. (Water glasses scene.)

Unsure of Date – I’m pretty sure now this was Nov. 18th, but I’m still not 100 percent sure. Michelle and Drew are having breakfast at the 5th Street Diner. They draw to one side and finally Drew convinces Michelle that she should make up to Danny to keep them safe. When Michelle approaches Danny he isn’t buying, he’s upset because no one much came to Mick’s funeral and Michelle and her friends didn’t even bother to come. Michelle says nobody told her when it was and admits it didn’t occur to her to ask. I think she is genuinely sorry that he’s upset she wasn’t there.

Thanksgiving is nearly ruined when Lizzie Spaulding and Marina Cooper go missing. Jenna is convinced her evil ex, Jeffery Morgan, has the girls and Michelle tells the police she thinks Danny may have taken them. Det. Frank Cooper (Marina’s father) is convinced and has him picked up and returned to Millennium. Danny laughs at the idea that he would do that and when India von Halkein suggests he’d want a ransom payment knowing the Spauldings are rich, Danny tells her that the Santos family has its own money. Danny offers to join the search and he finds the girls hiding and afraid to come back in an upper room. When Lizzie falls through the grate they were spying through, Danny saves her life. Everyone apologizes to Danny and he’s asked to stay for dinner, but when Michelle runs off, Danny follows her out of the club. Alan Spaulding gives a Thanksgiving toast.

Wed., Dec. 9, 1998 – I’m not positive about the date, but by counting days from those I know on Heartbreaker’s channel, it  most likely aired the 9th. Michelle volunteered to babysit the Cooper children during Jenna’s funeral, which the Cooper family gratefully accepted. The Coopers and Bauers were longtime family friends. Jenna and Michelle had always had a special bond ever since 1992 when they were trapped together during the Great Springfield Blackout of that year. Jenna had just realized the Springfield police were on to her jewel robbery and was trying to make a get away with the jewels she could when the power died. Jenna found herself in an elevator with young Michelle and Jenna comforted her, told her stories, and did her hair until power was restored, where she tried to climb through the escape hatch at the last minute, but was caught anyway. Michelle had always been taken in by Jenna’s glamor and after this they were fast friends as Jenna slowly redeemed herself, eventually marrying Buzz Cooper and having two children with him. The first was Henry Bradshaw (“Coop”) Cooper who was a long time young lead on the show with popular romances with Lizzie Spaulding (the best one), Ava, and Ashlee Wolfe. An affair with Lizzie’s mom, Beth, resulted in his tragic death in a car accident on the way to the church to stop her marriage to Alan Spaulding that facilitated Phillip’s return to the show in early Feb. 2009. The second child was Ian Stavros (“Rocky”) Cooper (Jeffery Morgan’s biological son) who as a toddler went to visit Jenna’s relatives in Great Britain one year for Thanksgiving (???) and never returned and now he never will on camera. (Bitter Sob!!!)

Tues., Dec. 15, 1998 – The next day an upset Michelle tells Drew that Danny decided to audit her psychology class and signed up to be her study partner. She goes on to say that during a classroom “Ink Blot” analysis, Danny said every blot was him and her making love. She told him she saw him being hauled off for sexual harassment. (Unfortunately this was never shown because Paul Anthony Stewart was sick the day they were scheduled to shoot, he still is sick with bronchitis at the mall in this episode.) Danny mailed Michelle an inkblot with a note, “I see a truce” and his cell phone number. [I always wanted to get this blot from Danny and present it framed to him and Michelle as a housewarming gift.] Michelle meets Danny at the mall to tell him to stop following her and intimidating her. Danny apologizes. He then tells Michelle that he has feelings for her and is losing interest in finding his brother’s killer, but Michelle doesn’t buy it. Michelle angrily tells Danny that she is with Jesse and there is nothing he can do to change that. [We’ll see.] When Jesse and Drew take Coop to the mall to see Santa, they narrowly miss seeing Michelle and Danny together. However, Michelle does see Jesse kiss Drew on the forehead.

My Comments:  https://glmanny.wordpress.com/2009/11/06/inkblots-psychology-class

THE LOST SCENE – We can blame it all on Paul Anthony Stewart (PAS) being sick at a terrible time. There was a scene written where Michelle discovers Danny has signed up to audit her Psychology class with her and gets himself assigned to be her lab partner. PAS was very sick and THANK GOD they didn’t put in a recast that day. Instead Michelle just tells Drew what happened and a classic lost episode was born in the minds of many Manny fans. I won’t do this often, but I think this short fanfic actually does a pretty good job of describing the scene, except from what Michelle says it was a lot more than two inkblots and they didn’t put in the part where Michelle says she sees him being hauled away for sexual harassment. This is one of the things Danny loves about her. She never backs down from him.

One of the things I especially like in this story is that Danny has two totally different ways to get the inkblot being sex across. I had imagined him repeating himself, but now I see this as a possibility, I think this is more accurate, he would have come up with a different way to get to the same end each time. It would have been a great scene.

Tues., Dec. 22, 1998 –  It’s First Present Day. See Danny think back on this in my “Typical House” fanfic. Danny is following Michelle today as she makes her Christmas rounds, first to Millennium and then to Holly’s house.  At Holly’s Michelle discovers that despite her earlier promise to Michelle, Holly is still drinking and a concerned Michelle consults with Ken about it. Outside she runs into Danny who gives her a creepy photo of herself alone in the park, designed to creep her out.

Tues., Dec. 29, 1998 – Danny Santos cockily walks into the gang’s apartment and greets Michelle with a great kiss, “Morning Sexy” right in front of Jesse. Jesse, blind with rage, tries to attack Danny. Danny claims it is part of an assignment from their Psych class and lets Jesse know that he is now Michelle’s study partner, which she had kept from Jesse. Later, out in the hallway, Danny tells Drew that he kissed Michelle in order to prove his theory that Jesse, when provoked, could be violent enough to kill. Meanwhile, inside the apartment, Michelle confesses to Jesse that Danny has been bothering her for some time, in an attempt to coerce Jesse into confessing to murder. She tells Jesse about the first time Danny kissed her at the diner. Jesse then secretly decides his only choice is to leave town forever in order to keep Danny away from Michelle. [He’s too late; Michelle is already in Danny’s blood.] He confides in Bill and asks him to watch over Michelle. As Danny leaves Drew’s apartment, he is confronted by Sam Dietz who tells him that he has 48 hours to wrap up his investigation or else or else all 4 of his “friends” will be killed.

Drew pleads with him to stay and later reneges on her promise to Jesse to tell Danny that Jesse killed Mick. Michelle (to Danny): “Shouldn’t you be off digging for truffles?” Danny: “Meaning?” Michelle: “You’re a pig!” Danny: “I’ve never really had a complaint before.”

Tues., Jan. 4, 1999 – Danny speaks to Dietz who says that whoever killed Mick will have to pay for their actions. Meanwhile, Jesse prepares to leave for what Michelle thinks is a “short” trip to New York for his art work. Michelle and Jesse have sex. Drew, not revealing anything of her part in Mick’s death, tells Danny that Michelle killed his brother, Mick, thinking that Jesse would not have to leave town. She told him it was self-defense and accidental stemming from the fact that Mick was going to rape Michelle. She thinks he cares for Michelle and won’t really hurt her. At first, most concerned that he won’t reveal to Jesse or Michelle that she told on Michelle, Drew suddenly realizes that Michelle is in real danger after all. Danny runs off to find Michelle. Selena tries to help Drew when she admits to telling Danny that Michelle killed Mick. Selena tells her to call the police and that she would protect her. As Jesse drives off, Danny yells at Michelle that the wrong person is running away, that he knows she killed Mick.

Tues., Jan. 5, 1999 – After a frantic call from Drew to 911, the police arrive at the club in search of Jesse, Michelle and Danny. When the police find Drew’s apartment empty, Drew panics and fears the worst. In a state of hysterics, Drew confides in Selena that she had a part in Mick’s murder. Secretly, Selena vows to protect her daughter at all costs and orders Drew to collect her things and leave the club with her at once. Meanwhile, after Jesse pulls away on his motorcycle in the alley behind the club, Danny confronts Michelle about Mick’s death. He drags her, screaming, down to the beach and forces her to tell him what happened that night. When she confesses, Danny threatens ominously that he will have to “take care of” Michelle for what she has done. Convinced she is telling the truth about Mick attacking her and his death being accidental; Danny drags Michelle down to the ferry docks where he pretends to kill her for Deitz’s benefit. Having bought some time, Danny devises a desperate plan, wondering aloud if she’s worth what he’ll have to do to keep her alive.

Wed. Jan. 6, 1999 – Jesse calls to check in and Drew tells him Danny knows the truth and to get back to Springfield. He arrives just as Drew is having a total meltdown in the Bauer’s garage apartment to Buzz and Selena. Drew: “I hate that I ratted Michelle out, but I couldn’t let Jesse take off and leave me forever….Besides Danny had a thing for her…..He liked her I mean anyone could see that and I thought he’d keep Michelle safe…I thought everything would work out. I didn’t want anything bad to happen to her, she was my friend….I set Michelle up because I love her boyfriend that’s why I told Danny she killed Mick. ” (Drew really wanted to be Michelle’s friend, she just really, REALLY sucked at it.) Danny takes her to the docks and fakes her death for Dietz’s benefit to buy time. He finally comes up with a desperate plan. Danny: “You whacked my brother over the head with a rock, you’re going to pay.”

Fri., Jan. 8, 1999 – Warning that it’s the only chance she has to stay alive, Danny brings Michelle home where he faces off against a threatening Dietz. Finally allowed to see “the boss,” Michelle apologizes to Danny’s mother Carmen (the boss) and explains that she killed Mick because he was attacking her. When Carmen asks Dietz for his gun so she can kill Michelle herself, Danny puts his body between hers and a bullet and explains that she can’t kill Michelle because Michelle is now family. Danny then tells his upset mother that he and Michelle are married. Instead of killing her, gallantly and because since the first time they’d talked he’d felt that he’d seen her soul and that she was someone to be treasured, he decided to use “the family” rule that you can’t ever kill family to save her by marrying her instead of killing her. (Danny was always a man of character and his mother had given him a code and by carefully controlling what he knew, at this point, he honestly believed Carmen and the other “Family” members lived by it too. He was totally wrong. Carmen could care less about any code, although it hadn’t come out yet, she had already killed her husband, but saw the code as a useful way to control Danny and refused to easily give it up. She planned to make him say it was OK to kill Michelle or better yet kill her himself.) While Drew continues to blame herself for what she thinks has happened to Michelle, Rick lays into Jesse and Bill for failing to protect his sister. After Buzz stops them from arguing, Frank explains that they cannot get a search warrant for the Santos place because of the power of the family. Dietz: “You’re throwing your whole life away, every thing you’ve worked for, been groomed for over some two-bit piece of work off the streets.” Danny: “Don’t you ever talk about Michelle that way again. Ever. You are an employee here. You are NOT a member of this family.”

Jesse talks his way inside the Santos house, using his ability to speak Spanish. She goes on to say to a speechless Jesse that she married Danny because she loves him and that she has had feelings for Danny for a long time. Drew overhears Carmen say all their lives are still in danger, but Jesse doesn’t and Drew keeps mum. Once Drew and Jesse leave, Danny reminds Michelle that her life depends on keeping up the pretext of their marriage. As a first attempt to rid herself of Michelle, Carmen tells Michelle and Danny that she has arranged for a church wedding, hoping that Danny will give up on her or Michelle will crack. (Luckily for Manny, Carmen has no idea what she’s dealing with yet or she might have just shot her right then anyway.) Back at home, Drew is quick to comfort Jesse hoping that, finally, she may have a chance to be with him. Danny: “Not only for your sake, not just your life depends on this….No one will be safe if you do not pull this off. You’ve got to make this look real.”

Michelle to Jesse: “Leave my husband alone! I’m trying to make this easy. I’m trying to be nice, but you’re just not getting it. You proposed to be months ago, what did I say? NO! You asked me to move in with you, what did I say? NO! How many ways do you have to hear it?”

Thurs., Jan. 14, 1999 – Jesse ruins the breakfast at the Bauer house with the news that Michelle has married Danny Santos, son of mobster Carmen Santos. As he explains, Dietz arrives and invites the family to the country club so that the two families can celebrate the happy nuptials. Drew and Selena arrive and learn from Jesse the latest about Michelle. Drew tries to convince Jesse to stay away from Danny and Michelle but he vows to ruin today’s luncheon. Now on Drew’s side, since she discovered she’s her daughter, Selena offers to help Drew win Jesse’s love. Danny: “I’m not going to let you take her away from me. Michelle is here because I want her here. She belongs with me.” Michelle: “Thanks for the kind wishes, Mama.”

Fri., Jan. 15, 1999 – Both the Santos and Bauer families show up for the nuptial luncheon. Unconvinced by the suddenness of the marriage, Danny produces the marriage license showing they are really wed. They try to put a good face on it, but Rick tries to force Michelle to tell him what’s really going on, she tells him to support her or leave. After a few more rude remarks in Carmen’s direction, Rick collects Abby and Meta and storms out. After Rick ruins the luncheon, Jesse surprises Michelle in the hallway outside the dining room with a kiss but she pulls back and insists that she doesn’t want to leave her husband. Carmen saw the clinch and sends Danny out to discover it. Michelle has pushed Jesse away, but he is still after her. Danny interrupts and starts throwing punches when Jesse refuses to leave. Seeing blood flowing from Danny’s nose, Dietz grabs Jesse and physically tosses him out. Terrified they will now kill Jesse she goes running after them begging them to leave Jesse alone. While Danny warns Michelle about her actions, Carmen decides to approach Jesse for help in breaking up the newlyweds. Danny: “You’re worried about hurting Jesse’s feelings? It’s a lot better than wondering what kind of flowers to put on his grave.”

Carmen boasts that she had did the decorating as a Santos family tradition and that she expects plenty of grandchildren from her son and his new bride. Michelle comes to the realization that Danny has feelings for her. She tells him that they will never have a romantic relationship. Meanwhile, Jesse rushes back to Drew and Selena and tells them that he saw Michelle and kissed her. He quickly adds that he knows that Michelle still wants him. The kiss really upsets Drew and Selena goes to Jesse and tells him that he makes Drew feel bad when he does this, that Drew loves Jesse and that maybe he should give up on Michelle. Michelle may be in love with Danny. Michelle: “I’m supposed to fall into bed with you out of gratitude. Give myself to you in lieu of flowers and a thank you note.” Michelle: “Nobody butts into my personal business that way.” Danny: “Haven’t you gotten it yet, Michelle? All of this is for you. I didn’t say anything to my mother just now because I will do whatever it takes to keep you alive… It’s not about my mother, it’s not about my brother anymore either, it’s about you and me.” Michelle: “This is not the beginning of wedded bless or  a great love story or even a one night stand.” Michelle: “I didn’t see any pajamas laid out for you.” Danny: “That’s because I don’t wear pajamas.” Michelle: “What do you wear?” Danny: “Nothing.” Michelle: “Not tonight.” Danny: “Touche.”

Tues., Jan. 26, 1999 – After Danny spends the night on the floor; he and Michelle prepare to visit with Father Tomas to discuss their upcoming marriage. When asked some personal questions about their marriage, Michelle says she sounds convincing by thinking about Jesse as she answers the priest while Danny writhes in jealousy. However, Father Tomas has them read some of their questionnaire answers aloud and they discover what they want from a marriage is virtually identical (open hearts and a real partner who would challenge them to be more than what they are). Drew tells Selena that she wants to make Jesse her new business partner. After a phone call from Carmen, a suspicious but interested Jesse arrives at the Santos home to hear her plan to break up Danny and Michelle’s marriage. My Comments:

https://glmanny.wordpress.com/2009/12/10/pre-cana-class-jan-26-1999

Father Tomas declares that he’s never had a couple so similar in outlook than Manny. While at the time they don’t really know what to make of it, later Michelle holds his statement close in her heart. Just what similarities did Father Tomas see? Well, if they answered those questionnaires in detail and honestly, here’s some of what he might have seen.

People often point out all the differences between Danny and Michelle, but the differences are mostly surface. It’s often said that she was lightness to his darkness, but that was more to do with coloring and usual moods than a deep explanation.  There were many similarities underneath that helped explain why they were so perfect for each other.

Both Danny and Michelle were the scion of their generation of a powerful and well respected (in the community they traveled in) family. Excellence was expected. Luckily they were both really intelligent, but even the gifted often find this kind of pressure incredibly stressful. He was the first one in his family to go to college and had aspirations to a MBA. She was Pre-Med and heading to medical school.

Their mutual intelligence also played out with being able to talk to each other on a different level than other people. Compare Danny seeing Michelle’s text book and able to make intelligent conversation about the class and the subject with Drew’s reaction to seeing one of her text books (“I get all those -ologies mixed up.”), Bill’s giving the basic text book definition of what psychology was, and Jesse not knowing anything about it, but thinking it sounded kind of interesting. Which one is the real conversation?

Their family background also determined a similar outlook about money. Both families had started out as poor immigrants and within a couple of generations accumulated quite a bit of wealth. The Santos family was definitely richer than the Bauer family, but the Bauer family had enough that Michelle had her own substantial trust fund. While their individual finances gave them trouble on occasion, it was all large ticket items, how are we going to pay back this large loan or build our dream house, not how to we buy groceries this week or pay off the credit card bill. So their expectations and thoughts about money are similar, in contrast to how that was always a struggle between Michelle and Jesse. Actually different philosophies about finances are often a stressor in real relationships and Manny didn’t have it.

To some extent their families had a similar background about religion. Although the Bauer family was usually shown as generically Protestant, Maureen was a Reardon and the Reardons were Catholic. So presumably, while Michelle says she was not raised Catholic at the Manny Pre-Cana meeting with Father Tomas, she must have had some exposure to the Catholic faith and been at least somewhat familiar with its rituals and traditions. In fact, normally one of the things a non-Catholic has to promise to marry a Catholic in the church is that they will raise the children Catholic, so Michelle should have had some exposure through Maureen’s influence. Religion is another stressor in real relationships, but Danny didn’t seem to push the issue of Michelle actually converting too much and she was very supportive of his religious traditions and habits.

Both Danny and Michelle to some extent had their future careers dictated to them by their families. Danny’s was the more set in stone. He was simply told constantly he was heir to the family business. Michelle’s situation was less clearly defined. While there were definitely continual comments on her being a doctor her whole life, I don’t think she ever really thought that far ahead for a long time and just went along with the idea to make her father happy. She doesn’t really commit until after her mother’s death and it’s actually quite awhile after that she actually says this is what she’s going to do with her life. She still felt she had some choice and made it in reaction to her mother’s death, but the family expectations were constantly there and they were still pressuring her even years later that she was settling for being a PA when  she should become a doctor (Michelle didn’t want to spend all the time medical school would require away from her children). While not as pointed, she lived with expectations almost as much as he did.

Both Danny and Michelle sought passion from life. Pretty much every action of Danny’s life was either control or passion. Michelle showed the passion she felt for life in the way she ate. The way she jumped into causes. The way she constantly fought for what she thought was right. When her friend died from AIDS, she didn’t stop at sympathy, she conceived, designed, and raised enough money for 5 years of operations for a memorial AIDS garden on the Cedars hospital roof. Clearly, she was someone who was going to take on life with both barrels. They both had passion for life and wanted to find it in others and were often disappointed that they didn’t in those they loved. They found it in each other.

Both Danny and Michelle were the second child. While Danny was the middle child and Michelle the youngest, they both had that similar position to fill within their families. Both had an older brother who they loved, but that had failed to meet family expectations (Mick is obvious. Rick lost his medical license for awhile over a scheme to help Phillip fake his death which actually drove him out of town for a few years and he thought that Claire had “fixed” his medical board tests). Both were expected to help make up for this shortcoming and fill the gap for the family. Both older brothers had a serious drug problem.  Rick did beat his (twice) and Michelle probably didn’t see as much of the fallout from that as Danny did. However, the similar situation had to have had an effect on both of them. Both older brothers were left in more of father’s position in the true father’s absence (Miguel was dead, Ed out of town for years). Rick did a much better job of filling in the gap than Mick, who was closer in age to Danny than Rick was to Michelle.

Both Danny and Michelle had the parent they chiefly identified with and felt closest to die as a young teen (Danny was 14, Michelle was 12). Both Miguel and Maureen’s deaths left them isolated and both Carmen and Ed failed to step in and put aside their own needs to help them through the ordeal. Instead both Danny and Michelle were expected to be strong, to some extent raise themselves, and to always be taking care of other people. They were abandoned by people over and over again. Michelle, for example, had Holly, who at first stepped in for Maureen, fall away from Michelle as she got involved again with Roger Thorpe and then fell into a world of delusion brought about by Fletcher kidnapping Meg. Danny, for example, had Ray withdraw into the world of the church. I think it was an understanding of this point that partly made Danny so determined to stand by Michelle when they thought she’d have to spend her life in prison, he wasn’t going to be another person who abandoned her. Also, it was his own expectation of abandonment that made him let her go so easily during the first divorce, of course she would leave him too and this mutual experience is why, no matter what her justification, she NEVER would have really divorced him, she would have understood what effect it would have on Danny better than anybody.

During the entire fallout from Mick’s death, Danny and Michelle are the only two who seem to realize how serious and consequential a death is. Michelle tries over and over again to talk about it and its effect on her to Jesse, Drew, and Bill and just gets told to forget it, to pretend it never happened, and it didn’t matter because Mick wasn’t a good person. She’s the only one who extended Danny any true sympathy even before she confesses. I think she genuinely is pained that it didn’t occur to her to ask when Mick’s funeral was. I think her talks with Danny, even though she didn’t confess, were the most understanding conversation between equals about it that she ever got on the subject. Even though they were part of the younger set and Michelle almost the youngest of the group (Bill was 1 month younger – although Ryan Brown was actually 5 years older than Joie Lenz), they were grownups and the others weren’t.

Finally, Danny and Michelle, while they might hide things from each other early on, even when Danny is still out to find Mick’s killer, they seem to almost unwillingly drag the truth out of each other. I don’t think Danny meant to share so much of his thoughts about Michelle during the Water Glass scene (in fact you can see when he suddenly forgets his point in talking to her, which was to plant doubts about Drew, and starts genuinely talking with her, his whole posture and tone of voice suddenly change only to harden again towards the end when he resumes his mission) and I don’t think Michelle meant to tell Danny so much about what was going on with Mick when she approached him at Thanksgiving (she was desperately trying to stick to her story, but finally just seems compelled to tell him part of the truth and I think her plea for him to let her alone is driven by the fact she knows it’s a matter of time before she tells him the rest). They just got near each other, connected, and found themselves telling the truth before they could help it. I think Danny had felt this even if he hadn’t thought about it. He made Michelle tell him what happened with Mick and once they tapped into that connection he knew what she said was the truth and never doubted it.

Is it any real wonder then that they understood so much about each other? That they complemented each other so well? While there were big chunks of them that were different from the type of family they grew up in, their general life experiences, and even their gender roles, there was also a great deal that was the same, if only you’d scratch the black and pink surfaces.

(NOTE: I am not Catholic and have no idea what really would have been on the questionnaires that Manny filled out, but once you start your mind running along the path of similarities they start to jump out at you.)

Wed., Jan. 27, 1999 – Shocked to find Jesse with Carmen as she announces him as her newest employee, Michelle states that she doesn’t want Jesse there, especially when Carmen suggests he could live there and keep her company while her husband is out. Carmen ignores her and Danny’s protests and gives Jesse a tour of the house. Danny suggests to Michelle that Jesse will leave them alone if he finds them in bed together. Finding Drew bouncing off the walls, Selena listens as she talks about how close she is to winning Jesse. Selena offers to help her but hints that it will be hard to stop Jesse from loving Michelle. When Jesse arrives, he announces that he’s quitting Millennium to go work for the Santos family. Hurt and upset, Drew reminds him that he signed a contract but offers to let him out of it if he sleeps with her.

Fri., Jan. 28, 1999 – Shaken by Danny’s suggestion that Jesse find them in bed together, Michelle sits on the bed near tears. She tells Danny that she can’t make love to him because she doesn’t love him. Jesse was her first and only and it’s truly important to her that it be an expression of love and closeness, not just sex. She doesn’t think she can do it without that. Michelle admits to Danny that she saw a side of him at Father Tomas’ office she had never seen before. They seem to make a connection, Danny slowly moves physically closer to her, and she doesn’t pull back. However, when he starts to kiss her again, she blasts him for failing to understand her. He then rushes out and confronts Jesse, ordering him to quit his new job or else he’ll have him killed.

Fri., Jan. 29, 1999 – Drew has come to visit Michelle and get her save Jesse by pushing him away. Drew overheard Carmen talking to Dietz on their first visit, while Jesse didn’t, and she understands that all of their lives depend on Danny and Michelle making things work. Michelle: “How am I supposed to do that? How am I supposed to do that send him an invitation, Danny and I are about to go have sex, wondered if you’d like to watch!!!” Danny to Jesse: “You’re an idiot Jesse….You’re a bigger idiot than I ever thought.” This is really the beginning of Drew and Michelle’s relationship as friends rather than rivals. Jesse pushes his way into Manny’s bedroom, Michelle tries to send him away as Drew hides. Messe kiss, but she finally gets him to go. Drew helps convince Michelle to do what Danny has suggested  in order to save Jesse’s life. She asks Drew for help to get Jesse there. Meanwhile, Danny goes to confession and explains to Father Tomas that he must do something terrible to save his wife’s life. The priest urges him to find another solution. Just then, Michelle phones and asks him to meet her at the lighthouse because she has a way to push Jesse out of their lives. Standing at the bed where she and Jesse first made love, Michelle somberly tells Danny that they must be caught in this bed together to convince Jesse she no longer wants him. When Danny asks her if she can really do this because Jesse won’t buy a show, Michelle kisses Danny hungrily. Danny is still hesitant to believe it’s really going to happen, but starts to let himself go. They undress and crawl in bed. Danny takes Michelle in his arms and asks if she knows how beautiful she is before he kisses her. Thanks to Drew, Jesse rushes to the lighthouse and finds Michelle with Danny. [Although nothing really happens except for the two kisses and laying entwined, both look back on this as one of the first moments of true intimacy in their marriage. When Danny tries to protect himself during their annulment separation by denying he ever felt anything for her, Michelle asks him specifically how he could deny feeling something when they were lying in “that bed.” She admits she couldn’t think of Jesse, who she had slept with in “that bed” at least twice, because the memory of Danny holding her there for that little while was so overwhelming.] At the last second, she decides she can’t do this and quickly donning Danny’s suit jacket, she tries to keep Jesse from coming in.

Mon., Feb. 1, 1999 – At the lighthouse, Jesse busts in the bedroom, in spite of Michelle’s frantic pleading not to come in and ruin their memories. Jesse is floored to see Michelle trying to hide her half-naked body and Danny in their bed. She claims that she wanted to share everything with her new husband including this magical place. Jesse wants to believe it’s not real, but Michelle forces him to look at the situation and tells him, they were good, but it was over. Jesse walks out, leaving Michelle to cry to Danny about what she has done and what kind of future she now faces. Danny tries to comfort her, but she jerks away. Jesse goes back to Drew’s and drinks his sorrows away. Drew apologized and told Jesse that Michelle still loves him, but stopped before she said too much. When Michelle and Danny arrive back “home”, Michelle asks to speak to Carmen alone. She is sugary sweet to Carmen and to every rude comment Carmen utters, Michelle says something nice about the wedding plans. Secretly she plans on going so deep into the Santos clan that she will find out all their secrets and bring them down. Michelle: “That was an accident. Besides Father Tomas says I was forgiven.” Carmen: “By God perhaps, but certainly not by me.”

Wed., Feb. 3, 1999 – Shocked to find a hungover Jesse sleeping it off at Drew’s place the next morning, Michelle explains to Drew that she intends to “bring down” the Santos family, including Danny. Insisting that she hasn’t slept with Danny, Michelle also warns her not to date Jesse because Drew would always be his second choice and Drew deserves better than that. That’s the first time anyone has told Drew that and she is genuinely touched. The girls relationship changes that day and Drew offers to help Michelle get information to the FBI. When Jesse comes out of the shower, Drew turns him down when he suggests they go out on a date. In spite of a warning from Carmen that Michelle can’t be trusted, Danny insists to his mother that Michelle is no longer in love with Jesse. Michelle starts a conversation with Danny saying she wants to know him better and they get along well. She suggests that maybe what they need to get the marriage to work is some sort of courtship and she wants to talk as a first step. He tells her he majored in business with a minor in political science, he teases her about what a “pain” his study partner is in the psychology class he is auditing. Michelle laughs and tells him that’s not what she says about you. He laughs, too and answers her questions that he likes to play basketball, but was bad at it and is good at pool. Then she asks about his family, he becomes defensive  and brusk and leaves.

Tues., Feb. 9, 1999 – Danny and Michelle visit the Bauer home to tell Rick, Abby and Meta in person that the church wedding is planned for the day after tomorrow. Rick flatly refuses to attend. This is Manny’s first time together at the Bauer House. Danny is unsure why Michelle’s attitude has changed and he’s afraid to have too much hope. Later, alone in Michelle’s old room, Rick tries to talk Danny out of the marriage by telling him how great Michelle is and if Danny really knows that to set her free. Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Meta tells Michelle that she is not convinced that she loves Danny. Michelle finds Danny alone in her old room where he is staring at a drawing Jesse did of her, she downplays its importance, but is strangely affected when Danny tells her it isn’t any good,”Jesse had a beautiful subject and he didn’t do her justice.” When she has a moment alone, Michelle tries to phone the F.B.I. to get assistance with her plan to bring down the Santos family. She is startled when Danny walks in during her phone conversation. He thinks she’s talking to Jesse.

Wed., Feb. 10, 1999 – Danny takes the opportunity of being alone in their bedroom to have a conversation with Michelle over their future. He struggles to find the right words saying he doesn’t want to sound like a pig and kneeling close to her chair he tells her, “I know I am not the man of your dreams, I know that, but I am — I’m a man and when we, when you and I go into our room at night, I know, I can’t just turn myself into some sort of automaton with no feelings and no desires. I just — I can’t do that. You know, when you — you take a shower and you comb your hair, you — you rub lotion into your arms, into your shoulders and you slip into a nightgown and I’m — I’m sitting in bed, pretending to read or listen to music or whatever, but that’s not what I’m doing. I — I’m watching you. I’m trying not to, but I am. I do. I am a man and when you climb into bed with me, beside me, never touching, never touching, I lie there awake, staring into the dark, aware of everything that you’re doing, of how you breathe, of the rustle of the sheets and it takes every ounce of my being to not want to reach out to you. I care about you. I desire you. I want to reach out to you.” She asks if he means, she doesn’t have a choice and he says no, he won’t force her, but he needs to feel married to her in every way and hopes she’s keep an open mind. He suggests the religious ceremony might make a difference, she might be surprised and with a strange look on her face she agrees that surprised is just what she might be. He announces he won’t sleep in their room until after the ceremony to give her some space and she seems surprised and almost disappointed. On the way out they find Jesse talking to Aunt Meta in the kitchen and discover he has brought a box of Michelle’s things over to the house. Danny stakes his claim and degrades the Romeo and Juliet that Michelle and Jesse used to read together as having a stupid plot where two kids too young to know what true love is, throw their lives away for what they only thought was true love.

Mon., Feb. 15, 1999 – Danny brings in the box that Jesse had brought over for Michelle into their bedroom. Michelle told Danny to get rid of it, but he told her that she could keep it, if she wants. She told him again to get rid of it, but he left it for her to do as she wanted. Danny: “You can keep your memories.” After Danny left, Carmen came in with her wedding dress and asked Michelle to wear it at her wedding. Michelle agreed and told Carmen that she would make her believe in her. Carmen didn’t seem convinced. Drew showed up and interrupted the confrontation. She and Michelle talk about Jesse and Drew’s “boyfriend”, “Brad”. Drew is making Jesse fight for her if he wanted her. They also spoke of the wedding and ultimately the wedding night. Michelle said that she believes that Danny is beginning to have true feelings for her, but she just doesn’t know how she can go through with her “wifely duties.” They also discussed Michelle’s plan involving the FBI. Outside Danny and Michelle’s bedroom, Carmen caught up with Danny and told him it was not too late to back out of the marriage. She said he did not have to go through with it and Danny replied to his mother that if she did not stop meddling, he would leave the Santos family for good.

Jesse talked to Drew about meeting her boyfriend. He tells Drew that he is going to mount an art show for Mark Endicott and would not be going to the wedding. Drew leaves. Danny shows up and threatens Jesse, he told him he would be dead if he showed up at the wedding or any other place around Michelle. Jesse told Danny that he is just scared she wouldn’t go through with it, if he was there. After Danny left, Jesse called and canceled his plans with Endicott saying he had a wedding to go to.
