“Explosion!” 6/22/99

This week, Danny’s desire to get his family to go legit may blow his relationship with Michelle to bits! The In Depth Preview: As the duo secretly plan to remarry after Ray’s ordination, Dietz – worried that the Santoses’ going legit will leave him unemployed – sets the stage for a group assassination at the Mass.

Later, while the Santoses gather at the church, unaware that Dietz has planted a bomb, Abby insists that she hears an unbearable whirring. When Ben finds the device, Danny yells for everyone to get out, but the door is locked!

With no time to defuse the explosive, Danny grabs it and jumps through a window.* Michelle screams as the bomb goes off. Has she lost Danny forever?

* Note: All the soap press about this commented on Danny jumping out the window, whether that was the original plan or not, I don’t know. I’m just glad it didn’t happen that way. Would have been really stupid.

“Carmen’s Downfall!” 6/8/99

Following the shooting at the Santos home, Ben decides this week that he’s had enough of Carmen’s antics and resigns as her counsel. Will her scheme to get even at last be her undoing – and finally free Danny to be Michelle?

The In Depth Preview: Distressed by the fact that both her son and daughter were on the verge of disowning her, with a little help from Ben, Carmen engineered a fake attempt on her life last week. But with the shoot-out nearly costing the lives of innocent bystanders, Ben decides that enough is enough. Despite Carmen’s protests, he insists that he is done working for the Santos family and leaves his ex-client seething.

Furious that Ben has double-crossed her, Carmen plots the ultimate revenge. She summons Danny, already on the warpath searching for his mother’s would-be killer, and convinces him that Ben was behind the shooting. Her plan to throw any suspicion off of herself works: Danny takes the bait and becomes obsessed with exacting revenge.

Danny, who is feeling pressure from the other crime heads to get rid of Ben, is waiting for his prey outside of the elevator. As Ben and Blake emerge, Danny makes it clear that the person who went after his mother is in serious trouble. Soon afterward, an agitated Ben corners Carmen in the parking lot, and asks why Danny believes that he is behind the shooting when they both know that Carmen set it all up herself. With faked concern, Carmen promises Ben that she will handle things.

After Carmen walks away, Ben checks to see if his tape recorded the incriminating conversation. At last, someone has the goods on Carmen. But will he live long enough to get rid of her once and for all, or die trying? Furthermore, could the revelation of the truth finally sever Danny’s ties to his mom – and set him free to return to Michelle’s arms?

“Danny Leaves Michelle!” 8/3/99

When Danny makes plans to return briefly to San Cristobel this week, he has no intention of having Michelle join him. But you know what they say about the best-laid plans.

The InDepth Preview: At the start of the week, after being deported from San Cristobel, Josh pays Danny a visit and relates his sob story. Then, he goes a step further and asks the reformed mobster to help him return to the country so they can rescue Reva.

Danny is annoyed that his friend, Prince Edmund, didn’t honor his promise to help free the Lewises from prison. Moreover, he can imagine how upset he would be if it were Michelle holed up in a foreign jail. So he agrees to fly Josh back to set things right.

Later, as Danny finishes packing for the trip, he is surprised by Michelle’s arrival at the Santos House and quickly hides his bag. When his wife insists on spending a quiet evening at home, he claims that he has an urgent business meeting. Naturally, when she spots the suitcase, she assumes the worst — that Danny is leaving her to return to the Mob.

Danny pleads for Michelle’s understanding. Then riddled with guilt, he confesses his plan to help out Josh. Assuring his new bride that he is in no danger, he promises to be back the following day.

Could his overnight Good Samaritan trip turn into more of an unplanned, extended vacation?
