8. Perfect Storm

We’re about to hit another new chapter in the Manny story and we’ll be starting a new section of our episode guide. That’s left “The Death of Carmen Santos – Take 2″ shorter than normal, but there is a clear turn in the story at this point. After Carmen’s second supposed death, Danny is consumed with guilt with very few cracks he pushed Michelle away. Now Michelle will be physically threatened and that will push Danny the other way. Oh, the guilt will keep him from being fully with her for a little while yet, but he’ll start confiding in Michelle again and once that happens it’s just a matter of time and Aunt Meta. Then everything will seem to come after Manny at once from multiple mob families, to the FBI. There’s lots of excitement, lots of good scenes, and some killer Manny lines.

Wed., Jan. 17, 2001 – At the Bauers: Danny is looking out the kitchen door when Michelle comes up behind him and touches his back. When he reacts, she apologizes for startling him and asks him if he got any sleep. He tells her that he hasn’t. Danny was watching the back of the house and that Ray was watching the front of the house, but he had to leave for morning mass. He tells her that he didn’t see the thugs anymore and asks her when Rick will be home. She thinks he will be home soon. Just then Rick walks through the door and asks why Danny is there at this hour. Danny tries to explain the situation and Rick got very upset. He asked Danny if Michelle is being stalked. Michelle tries to explain that May saw the men and thought they were following her (Michelle) and she told Danny. Rick asks Danny if the guys were members of a rival family. He tries to blame Danny once again for putting his sister in jeopardy. Danny tells Rick he doesn’t have time to talk about this and asks Rick to watch Michelle. He asks Rick if Frank can help them. Rick tells him that he will try to get hold of him. Danny leaves and tells Michelle not to be going anywhere. Frank shows up and asks Rick and Michelle what is going on. Rick starts bashing Danny to Frank and Michelle is defending him. Frank mentions how everyone is going through tough times lately. He and Rick tell Michelle about Harley.  (I think this is the morning after Jude Bauer was conceived, but hard to tell without the rest of the footage.) Danny arrives and tells them that he believes the situation is resolved and Michelle is safe. He tells her that just in case, he is going to take a trip to New York to make sure everything is all right. Michelle asks him how long he will be gone and where he will be staying. Danny doesn’t want to tell her. He asks Frank and Rick to look after her and he leaves. Rick asks Frank what he thinks. Frank says he doesn’t think Danny would have left if he didn’t think Michelle was safe. Michelle says she is going to New York. Frank asks Michelle if she is nuts. Rick tells her no. Michelle says she knows Danny still loves her and this may be her one chance to get through to Danny and she is going. Frank and Rick try to talk her out of it again but she says if they try to stop her, she will never forgive them.

I had slightly longer version of the clips, but sadly that channel was taken down so we’re repeating the version from the last post. Start at 2:20

My Comments:

The Manny in New York City scenes are a very important part of the Stalban Manny. It’s my opinion that it was during these scenes that Nancy St. Alban really figured out Michelle. Michelle “follow you into hell and drag you back” below is one of the best of the Manny speeches.

Fri., Jan. 19, 2001 – In New York: At a hotel: Danny enters his room  (for the record its room 306, they don’t give the hotel name, at least in these clips) and finds Michelle sitting on his bed. He asks what she is doing there and she says she was waiting for him. She found him by tricking Tony. Danny is annoyed and throws off an automatic threat towards Tony, Michelle says he is not mad at Tony, he is mad at her. Danny wants her to leave. Michelle says if she stays with Danny, he can protect her. She thinks he wouldn’t have left Springfield if he really believed she was in danger. Danny says Michelle is safer away from him. Michelle says that maybe he feels safer away from her. She tells him that he still wants her but Danny tells her not to assume anything. Michelle:  “OK, do you miss me as much as I miss you?” Danny wants her to leave. He says there are a lot of reasons he doesn’t want her there. He doesn’t want her to be around his business. Michelle tells him that doesn’t work, they aren’t married anymore and not living together and she was still stuck in the middle or those thugs wouldn’t have been following her. Clearly this plan isn’t working and he should give up on it. First step of the new plan should be him telling her why the thugs are following her. Danny tries to shock her and says he is the biggest gangster in Springfield, the Boss. Michelle doesn’t flinch and only says, “Okay”. Danny: “Okay, what do you mean okay?” Michelle: “You’re a natural leader and will try to take control of whatever you do, somebody must not like that. Is that the problem?” Danny tells her that he wants to move the families in a new direction but some members don’t like to give up the old ways. During the transition, they might want to use Michelle as a bargaining chip. Danny has talked to some people and thinks Michelle is out of danger. She asks him why he stayed with her the entire night if he didn’t still love her. He tells her that if anyone had hurt her, he would have had to retaliate and that would have been bad for business and a lot of bloodshed.
Michelle: “Danny, look me in the eye. Is this the life that you want?”

Danny: “This is the way it is…. I can’t change it. Neither can you.”

Michelle: “Thank you God.”

Danny:  “What?”

Michelle: “You still can’t lie to me. You are still alive in there.”

Danny: “Not for long.”

Michelle: “What?”

Danny: “You can’t lie to me either. You’re standing here pretending to be cool about guns and thugs and everything that I know you hate. Why? Why?”

Michelle: “Because that’s where you are now and I want to be with you and I will be with you….”

Michelle: “Tell me what I ever did to make you think so little of me.”

Danny: “What? I don’t…”

Michelle: “What makes you think that I’m such a coward that I can’t face the same things that you do?”

Danny: “I don’t think you’re a coward.”

Michelle: I’d follow you into hell and pull you right back out. I’m not giving up on you, Danny!”

She asks him to leave this while he still can. Danny says he can’t and wishes she would understand. Michelle says he was willing to leave with her once until Carmen’s death. They argue and Michelle says she is not giving up on Danny. Michelle: “I know your heart. I know you love me and you love this child.” Danny says that he has to keep them as far away as possible because he loves them. Michelle says as long as he is in the business, she is involved whether they are together or not. Michelle: “As long as you’re in this business, we ALL are. Even the thugs that you deal with know the truth. You’re a part of me, you’re a part of this child. Set us free, Danny.” She wants to be with him and she goes over and puts her head on his shoulder. He starts to weaken and lower his arm around her but pulls back and tells her that he has to go. Michelle asks him when he would be back. He says he doesn’t know. He tells her to go home and not wait around there. She tells him she will be there when he returns. Danny says there is no point and it won’t change anything. Michelle looks sad, but determined. Michelle has been out shopping and returns to the room. She goes in and puts her bags down. Someone is outside the room and uses a credit card and opens the door. Michelle hears someone behind her, turns around and screams.

Mon., Jan. 22, 2001 – In a Hotel, New York: Frank Cooper scares Michelle when he picks the lock on her hotel room and enters. He tells her he just wanted to check in on her. She tells him she is fine and that he should report back to Rick that everything is okay. He tells her that she should be worried that he was able to pick her lock so easily. Frank wants to know where Danny is and starts snooping around. Michelle accuses him of being there as a cop and not as a friend. Michelle asks Frank to admit he is after Danny. Frank says that he is not convinced she is safe with Danny. Michelle doesn’t want Frank to hide behind their friendship to get info about Danny. Frank wonders if they are getting back together and Michelle hopes so. Frank likes Danny but worries about Michelle because Danny will stay in the mob. Michelle says she will stick by him until he is ready to quit the mob. Michelle: “It’s complicated. He needs some time, that’s all. I couldn’t just draw an arbitrary line in the sand and make him step across it. If I have to I’ll step across it and stand by him until he’s ready to move out of this business with me.” Frank says he wishes Eleni had stood by him like that, but Michelle is putting herself in danger. Frank offers to protect her. Michelle starts to cry and Frank apologizes, rubbing her shoulder as Michelle rests her head on his shoulder. Just then, Danny walks in and asks Frank what is going on. Frank tells him he was just checking in on Michelle. Danny tells him that he doesn’t like coming in and seeing him holding his wife. Frank reminds Danny that Michelle is his ex-wife and he was just comforting her. Danny tells Frank to leave and throws his jacket at him. Frank gives Michelle a card with his numbers and tells her to call for anything. Michelle asks Danny why he was so rude to Frank. Danny asks her if she wanted the police after him. Michelle tells him that Frank is there friend and came because he was concerned about the both of them. She tells him that she only wanted to be with him and that is why she followed him. Michelle: “Oh God Danny if you don’t trust me, how will we ever find our way back to each other.” Danny relents rather than let Michelle think he doesn’t trust her and says it’s Frank he doesn’t trust. He sits on the bed and bows his head.  Words are almost forced out of his mouth as against his will he admits that he hated coming in and seeing another man holding her. Danny: “I hated seeing him holding you like that.” Michelle sits down beside him and strokes his arm. She tells him that she realizes he was jealous and that he still has her in his heart. Danny jumps up off the bed and tells her that he can’t. She tries to talk about the baby and he asks her “How can you want these hands that killed my mother to hold your baby?” She grabs them and tries to pull them to hold the baby in her stomach, but he resists. She tells him that their baby was created out of love and that is all she and the baby will see. She tries to touch him and Danny leaves.

Wed., Jan. 24, 2001 – At the Hotel, New York: Danny comes back from some meetings and finds Michelle sitting on the bed. He said that he had hoped she would be gone back home. She tells him that she would not be leaving until he comes to his senses. Danny tells her that she used to have more common sense. Michelle tells him that some things in life are more important then common sense. He tells her that she is a mother now and should be thinking of the baby and not him. She asks him if he thought of her while he was away at the meetings. He said that he did and thought about how he should have never stayed over at her house that night. It gave her the wrong idea and now her being in New York would give others the wrong idea. Michelle: “Is it wrong? Even the thugs you work with know that we are a part of each other, married or not.” Michelle looks him in the eye and touches his face. Michelle finally forces Danny to verbalize his thoughts about them and their relationship. He tells her that she is making things very difficult for him. She tells him good that she wants it to be so painful and unbearable that he has to come back to her. Danny tells her that he is no good for her and that he crossed a line when he killed Carmen. Michelle tells Danny he is not his mother and they can be free. They can be their own family. Danny doesn’t want to hear it. She tells him he saved her life and now he is a part of hers forever. Danny says she doesn’t want to be a part of his life. Michelle says the thugs came after her even though they are not living together, so she is not any safer away from him. Danny tries to fight his feelings but Michelle says he is stuck with her and she intends to fight for him. Danny takes off his jacket and fixes himself a drink. Michelle is trying to reason with him to let Carmen go. Michelle: “You think you have to live in purgatory without love.” Danny: “That’s crazy.” Michelle: “Yes it is. Let Carmen go. She is free, we’re free. You know your father died for love, but YOU can live WITH LOVE. Just let me love you.” She asks him if he loves her and he finally, brokenly, admits that he does. He says he is afraid that he will destroy her and is trying to keep her away from him. Danny: “You deserve so much more, so much better.” Michelle: “There is no more, there is no better. You are my world.” She touches his face. She starts to kiss him and he responds, taking her face in his hands. They kiss passionately and proceed to take each other’s shirts off. Danny stops and asks what they are doing. He makes one desperate attempt to stop himself pulling her hands off his chest, but she only slips them on up to around his neck and presses against him the tighter. She tells him that he is her husband and her life, “make love to me.” His voice shaking and tears in his eyes, he tells her how beautiful she is. He makes one final pause looking down at her stomach with an unasked question. Michelle: “It’s okay. It won’t hurt the baby.” He carries her to the bed and they make love. Later, as they lie together Danny strokes Michelle’s tummy. He feels the baby kick for the first time and Michelle tells him the baby is saying hello. Michelle smiles and tells him she loves him.

Although, Michelle and Danny spend a blissful few days in New York together, unfortunately like their second honeymoon, it is all off screen. They visit many of the places she wanted to show him when she was staying in New York City alone. They do more baby shopping. Michelle gets a new short haircut and they make up for the fact that they hadn’t made love since before their divorce (they never got a chance during the reconciliation before Carmen kidnapped her). However, they never talked about the future, so they probably spent them alone or at least didn’t visit Drew or Jesse who would have asked what it all meant.

My Comments:

Mon., Jan. 29, 2001 – At the Bauers: Michelle comes in followed by Danny, carrying all her packages. Michelle’s biggest worry is now if Danny really likes her new short haircut and assumes he will be moving back in with her. Michelle says that the baby will have everything it needs including its daddy. Danny tells her that two days together doesn’t solve all their problems. Michelle doubts Danny can walk out the door. Danny says the past couple of days were great. They were in a city where they had no history, no enemies. It was separate from reality. Michelle insists that she is not afraid of his world anymore. Danny says a few days ago, people were following her. Danny doesn’t want her and the baby to be part of his life. Michelle asks what if he can’t stop her. Michelle reminds Danny that he made love to her and she strokes his arm. He tells her he loves her and wants her but the life he leads will only hurt her and the baby. His phone rings and it is May. She tells him about Tony, asking him to get there ASAP. He tells May to call Ray and no one else. Danny tells Michelle that there is an emergency and Michelle wants to go with him. Danny says Michelle can go with him but must keep quiet about what she sees and hears. Michelle agrees and reminds him that she has kept the other Santos family secrets including the one about Carmen. At Infierno: Catalina and May hear a noise, then see Tony tumble down the stairs bleeding and unconscious. They get him into Danny’s office and try to take care of him. May tells Catalina to cover Tony with a blanket, while she gets on the phone. She calls Danny and he says he will be right there. Danny is wiping the blood of Tony’s face while trying to get him to come to. Ray, Catalina, Michelle and May are in the office too. Tony wakes up and asks, “Where is she?” Danny asks him who did this. Tony looks around and says he can’t tell him. Danny asks the ladies to leave them alone a moment. They leave and Tony tells Danny that the goons grabbed Marah. He tries to get up saying he has to find her but he can’t. He tells Danny and Ray how they were at the Lewis’ and one of the men grabbed her and the other started beating on him. Ray and Danny are concerned and Ray thinks they should call the cops. Danny thinks the only way to protect Marah is to deal with it themselves. He thinks the whole situation was a ploy to get his attention. Some of the families don’t like what he is doing and want to bargain with him. Danny says he just has to figure out how to get her back. Ray insists on calling the police and Danny finally agrees, deciding to ask Frank to be discreet. Danny asks Ray to take Tony to the hospital while he contacts Frank. Catalina goes with them while Michelle waits for Danny. Michelle asks Danny what happened. He tells her when they couldn’t get to Michelle, they snatched Marah. Michelle says the danger is not from him but from his work. Frank arrives. Danny wants him to keep this information to himself. He tells Frank about Marah’s kidnapping. He thinks he knows who did it but needs Frank to be restrained. Frank agrees as long as Danny levels with him. He says he will handle the Lewis family while Danny goes to look for Marah. He wants Frank to tell the Lewises that Marah is safe and they are trying to get her back. Frank tells Michelle he wishes she wasn’t in on this and Danny agrees. Frank leaves and Danny calls Carlos. He asks him what he knows about the situation. Danny tells Michelle he may have a lead on who has Marah. She asks what he will do. Danny says whatever it takes.

(This is the Manny highlight clip, when the scene cuts to the Lewis house about 1/2 way through stop and watch the links below.)

Tues., Jan. 30, 2001 – At Infierno: Danny is waiting for Carlos to call. Michelle is with him and says she wanted to spend time with him but didn’t expect this. Danny says that he wants her to leave as soon as someone can take her. May comes in and says Tony has some cracked ribs but will be okay. She asks if Michelle wants something to eat. Danny encourages her to go with May. They talk about Tony and May asks Michelle if it makes her crazy when she doesn’t know what is going on. Michelle says it is worse sometimes when you do know. May wonders if it was the same thugs from last week. She starts comparing it to a movie but Michelle stops her. Frank comes in and asks if Danny heard anything. Frank says Reva is very upset. Danny says Reva is a lose cannon and her being anywhere near this situation is a big problem. Frank offers to take Michelle home and then will contact his sources. Michelle doesn’t want to go but eventually agrees. Tony arrives with Ray. Michelle wonders what Tony is doing there. Tony asks Danny about Marah. Tony thinks Danny needs to hit back hard at Johnny Machado. Danny says what if it isn’t him. Tony says if it is him, he (Tony) would like to deal with him. Danny wants to handle it and tells him it will be better for Marah. Reva arrives and says she holds each of them responsible for Marah’s life and wants to know how they are going to find her daughter.

Wed., Jan. 31, 2001 – At the Bauers: Frank brings Michelle home. She is worried about Marah especially since Tony was badly beaten. Frank says most thugs draw the line at women and children. Michelle says she should have been the one kidnapped instead of Marah. Frank tries to cheer her and tells her she needs to think of the baby. Michelle tells Frank he can get back to work. Frank says he is staying put. Frank gets her some milk and tells her that he can do all his work from there until someone else gets there to watch her. She doesn’t think it is necessary but he tells her that someone could be out there watching her right now. Michelle is worried about Marah but Frank tells her that the guys who did this want Danny, not Marah. Michelle says the families wants Danny back on their terms, but she wants him back in hers and she won’t give in. Frank says a part of him thought she and Danny wouldn’t come back from New York. Michelle said she didn’t want to. She tells Frank that Danny is a good person, not at all like Carmen. He just believes what his mother told him about himself. Michelle wants Danny back but Danny believes the kidnapping proves they shouldn’t be together. Michelle wishes it could be just her, Danny and the baby. Frank reminds her of trying to help the FBI bring down the family a while back and says if they had succeeded then she would have her dream now. Meta returns home and is upset about the kidnapping. She asks Michelle if she knows why it happened. Michelle says she isn’t sure. She tells Meta about cooperating with the FBI. Meta tells her to take it one day at a time. Right now, Marah is the one who needs help.

I’m not sure which day this is but Josh, Reva, and Olivia discover Marah is kidnapping.

Fri., Feb. 2, 2001 – At the Santos Compound: Danny and Tony are listening to Johnny’s conversations on a scanner. Tony tries to run out when he hears something about the lighthouse. Danny tries to stop him and Ray agrees. Danny thinks he and Marah will both get shot. The only way to get Marah back alive is to keep the police and the guns out of it. The phone rings. Frank tells Danny they have a problem; Danny has been holding out on him. Danny tells Frank he knows everything Danny knows. Frank mentions the meeting with Johnny. Danny says he was planning on filling him in once he had more info. Frank asks questions about Marah and is not buying Danny’s story. Frank is threatening a SWAT team and tells Danny he can’t promise him anything unless Danny tells Frank everything. Frank wants 45 minutes notice to get the police in place. Danny tells Ray and Tony that Frank knows about the meeting. Danny decides to get Marah out first before the meeting and the police arrive. Tony says he knows how they can get Marah out. He tells them about Sam scaling the lighthouse to come in from the top and Danny calls him.

Sam arrives at the Santos house. He tells Tony this was bound to happen to Marah and wonders why he couldn’t leave her alone. Tony and Sam are yell at each other and Ray and Danny break it up and get to the point. Danny asks Sam if he can climb the lighthouse. Sam says he can and asks if that is where Marah is being held. He asks why they don’t call the police. Danny says it will make things worse. He explains that they have to get Marah out of the lighthouse by 11 PM. He asks if Sam can get her out without being seen. Tony wants to come but Sam says he has to do it alone. Ray reminds Tony of his broken ribs. Danny says the guys have to put aside their differences or the plan is off. They both agree.

Tues., Feb. 6, 2001 – At the Lighthouse Marah is sitting blindfolded and tied. She is talking to the goon who is watching her and tells him she must be very intimidating to them to be kept tied up. She complains about having to go to the bathroom, being dehydrated and then of some pains she has. She begged the guy to untie her for only a moment. The guy comes over and says he would rather put duct tape on her mouth. Marah says her boyfriend will save her but the goon says with her mouth her boyfriend may have decided she isn’t worth it. Meta comes down and offers Michelle some chamomile tea to help her sleep. Michelle won’t sleep until she hears from Danny or Frank. She trusts Danny to rescue Marah. Meta says it will take more than chamomile tea to calm her while working with Claire. Michelle thinks Meta is formidable and will hold her own. Michelle says she is also stronger than she looks and will use that strength to help Danny. On the observation deck the goon is surprised when Sam comes over and starts talking about the stars. The guy wonders how Sam got up to the top of the lighthouse. Sam starts telling him about free climbing and how great it is except when it is freezing and the mortar cracks. Sam keeps the guy distracted while Tony climbs the rope. The guy pulls a gun on Sam and Sam asks him what his problem is. He just wanted to look at the stars and somebody pulls a gun on him. Tony sneaks up over the railing and behind the guy and taps him on the shoulder. When the guy turns, Tony knocks him out. Sam starts tying the guy’s hands behind him as Danny and Ray climb up the rope. Tony tells them that they got one of the men and there should only be one more. Danny tells him not to get overconfident. Tony and Sam are ready to go on to part two of their plan. Ray huddles them all together and they pray for the safety of Marah and themselves. Marah is still complaining as Danny, Tony, Sam and Ray arrive outside the door where she is being held. Danny’s cell phone rings and the guard goes out to check. Marah screams as she hears a shot. Tony comes in and unties Marah and she tells him she knew he would come. She was afraid he was shot. She thinks he is amazing but Tony admits Sam is the one who did the climbing. She thanks both of them. Sam thought they were toast when Danny’s phone rang. Danny says it was the cops. Danny returns Frank’s call and tells him he will bring Marah and Sam home. Frank says he will be waiting. Danny and Ray tell them that they all are going to the Lewis house.

The Santos’ and Sam come in with Marah. Reva is hugging her. Frank confronts Danny and wants details. Danny tells them how Sam and Tony staged the rescue. Marah stands up for them saying they were hero’s but Josh says Tony is the reason that Marah was kidnapped in the first place. Ray says he is proud of Tony but Josh says he has had enough of the Santos family. They get ready to leave and Marah tells Tony that she will never forget what he did. Sam tries to stand up for Tony and Danny, but Reva and Josh start in on him working with the mob instead of the police. Sam says Danny’s plan worked and he is glad he could help. Reva says, “If you were my kid…” Olivia stops her and Josh suggests she take Sam home. Noah tries to make peace. Marah apologizes for ruining another honeymoon. Josh and Olivia are going to go home and Marah thanks Sam again. Josh hugs Marah. Josh gives the keys to Sam to go to the car. Olivia asks him if he understands why she withheld information. Josh tells her that he is angry.

Josh: “You blindly put your trust in Danny Santos.” Sam: “Not blindly, Tony and Danny explained their plan to me and it made sense…it seemed like the best chance to save Marah, and guess what? It worked!” (Trusting Danny, what Josh should have done.)

NOTE: Most of this is a from a channel that mainly hosts a highlight reel from someone interested in Josh and Olivia and Reva, not Manny or Marony so these are definitely not the bits I’d have highlighted, but it’s much more than is in the Manny highlights and the scenes were they recruit Sam and when they decide who is going first are are worth watching them all.  I did have to make kind of a rough stab on some of these though because I hadn’t though some of the bits included (Josh and Olivia finding out, for instance) worth including in my descriptions so some of the dates maybe even more approximate than is usual with highlight reels.

My Comments:

Thurs., Feb. 8, 2001 – All the mobsters start filing in and May takes a picture of each one. She leaves and Danny starts off by asking why Johnny would kidnap a little girl to get his attention when he has a phone to call him. Carlos says Johnny is sorry and will abide by the rules. Danny says Johnny promised that before, but didn’t deliver. Carlos asks Danny to name his price. Danny says there is no price. He continues by saying the Santos family is out for good. Danny says he tried to bring them along and do business a better way but he is tired of dragging the rest of them into this century. His family is going out on their own and he wishes them well. He tells them to stay out of his way and he will stay out of theirs. Carlos asks Danny if he is taking his people off the streets. Carlos says if he pulls his people, others will take it over. Danny tells them that is fine and repeats that the Santos family is out. Someone starts to talk and Danny tells him that he didn’t call them there for a discussing, just to inform them of what is going on. Everyone leaves except the Santos’ and Carlos. Carlos tells Danny that the men left there unhappy. Carlos tells Maria there will be big changes. Maria says she supports Danny. Carlos wishes them all good luck. Danny closes the door and tells them he feels great, like himself again. Tony says the guys don’t really understand but they know they don’t like it. He adds that once they figure it out, it will be open season on the Santos family. Tony says Danny just painted a big target on the backs of all their people. Danny says that all their people are off the streets and have been reassigned, so there will be no one for them to go after. The family is out of that kind of business and the rest of them can fight over the other everything. He tells Tony and Maria that there will be no more violence and they will live a long time and be able to be with the ones they care about. Tony is worried. May is on the phone with someone. She tells them that the mob guys are all leaving and she believes they need a debriefing in person.

My Comments: Sadly I couldn’t find any footage on this, but it’s such an important bit that I broke it off into its own piece. This is the first step in literally everybody on both sides of the law coming after Manny, little Robbie, and (once he makes the right decision) Tony.

Elsewhere in Springfield, since we last checked in with the Jolivia story, Olivia caught Tony and Marah together. Instead of telling Josh, Olivia instead chose to blackmail Marah with the information for her to accept Olivia’s relationship with Josh. Olivia would probably say she was genuinely trying to help Marah away from making a bad choice with Tony, but with Olivia’s track record she should just but out. Catalina hadn’t quite started her obsessive plots for Tony yet. I really wish I had the Phillip and Michelle dinner, but sadly the clip isn’t currently available.

Fri., Feb. 16, 2001 – Michelle comes into Danny’s office and sees Abuela. Abuela asks her what she is doing there. Michelle tells her that she is there to see her husband. Abuela tells her that Danny is not her husband. Michelle tells her that Danny still loves her and she is carrying his child. Abuela tells her to leave. She says Michelle has no right to tell Danny how to live his life. Abuela tells her that all Danny’s decisions were made by his own free will and he chose his family against her. Michelle tells her that Danny can make his own decision and he loves her. Michelle says Danny is in agony and is still running the family because of the guilt Maria and Carmen caused. Abuela tells her that she is selfish and her stupidity will get her in trouble. She accuses Michelle of looking down on them and reminds her that she is not a Santos and never will be. Michelle tells her that she isn’t going anywhere. Abuela tells her that may be dangerous to her. Danny walks in and asks Michelle what she is doing there. Michelle tells him that she is listening to his grandmother threaten her. He asks her what she means. Michelle tells Danny that she told Maria that she and her baby want Danny back and are determined to get him. Then Maria told her that it would be seriously dangerous to her health to keep it up. Maria calls Michelle paranoid and gets upset and leaves. Danny tells Michelle that she is ruining his day, coming around and starting trouble. He asks her why she had to come get into it with Abuela. She tells him that she was just stating the fact that they will be together. Danny starts to protest but Michelle tells him that it will happen. She tells him that she is sorry but she won’t stop fighting for him. He gives up and asks what she came there for. She tells him that she brought him a gift for Valentine’s Day. It is the latest sonogram. He takes it and thinks about not opening it. He eventually does and is taken aback. He is impressed at the growth and smiles. She tells him that is her reason and proof that they will be back together. He doesn’t understand. She tells him that they are from different worlds but not so different that there love couldn’t produce a child.

Alternative Version:

Mon., Feb. 19, 2001 – Danny comes to Michelle’s table and tells her there is no point in her hanging around here. Michelle tells Danny she is staying but Danny says she is wasting her time. He appeals to Frank, who walks away. Michelle insists she will be waiting for him and tells him when he comes to his senses she will be at home.

At the Lighthouse Tony tells Marah he wants things to be different from when she was a prisoner. He tells her that it is their place now and starts kissing her. Tony offers her something to eat and then starts talking about Shayne’s hockey team. Marah wonders if something is wrong since he is changing the subject to hockey. He tells her that he is just trying to make conversation. He is trying to slow down and let them take their time. He tells her that she is making it very hard to do. Marah asks Tony if he is backing away from her because of what she did on New Year’s Eve. He tells her to forget about it because she has apologized enough. Marah says he even saved her from being kidnapped. Tony doesn’t want her being there out of gratitude. She says Tony always says he has changed because of her, but she has changed because of him too. He goes back to the food and pulls out all kinds of snacks.

They lie down on the blanket and are talking about her parents. She asks him about his childhood. He tells her about Ray and his relatives, saying no one was on his back too much; he pretty much raised his self. She says she wishes her parents would lighten up on her. She thinks they only want a preppie who will get 1300 on his SAT’s. She says those guys don’t respect girls at all. Tony says she shouldn’t take that from anyone. Marah says college is full of guys like that. Tony says college never seemed practical to him. He just wanted to survive. Marah wants to know what he really wants out of life. Tony says before he met her, he just wanted to stay two steps ahead of the guys on the street.

Josh and Olivia look around the exterior of the lighthouse and see that it is in a mess. Olivia wonders how Sam climbed it and feels bad about Marah being held there. Olivia notices the door is unlocked and Josh says he will call someone about it in the morning. Josh’s cell phone rings as they start to enter the lighthouse. He tells her that it is a business call and he has to go to the Spaulding Spires project. Olivia tells him she will stay there and takes some pictures until he gets back. She has her cell phone in case of emergency. Olivia enters the lighthouse.

Tony tells Marah he wanted to give her something, without just buying it. He is nervous and starts to recite the poem in Spanish. Marah is lying with her head in his lap, looking up at him. He is stroking her hair and she seems impressed with the poem. Marah pops up and kisses him. She says that was the most beautiful thing she ever heard, but she didn’t know what he said. He tells her it means she is beautiful. He starts to translate into English. Tony says she is beautiful no matter what and kisses her again. Meanwhile, Olivia is climbing the stairs and is taking pictures inside the lighthouse. Tony tells Marah they should listen to music and make conversation instead of making out. He puts some music on and they dance slowly. She reminds him she will be 18 next month. He says she is killing him but she says she knows what she wants and tonight is the perfect night. She helps take Tony’s shirt is off and they kiss passionately as Olivia discovers them. Olivia calls out to Marah, who turns to look at her. Olivia has the camera in her hand pointing right at them.

We pick up there at another episode, I’m not sure of the date. Olivia’s finger almost unconsciously presses the button and takes a shot of them hot and heavy together. Olivia gives them a lot of mature advice. Tony and Marah give eloquent pleas for their relationship and the powerful force for good it is in their life. Olivia points out that both Josh and Reva would freak if they saw the photo. Olivia: “You would be sent off to a convent. Or a military school. Or a military convent school.” Olivia makes a deal. She’ll keep quiet if Marah calms down and asks respectful to all the adults in her life. Tony needs to find a way out of the family business.

My Comments:

Fri., Feb. 23, 2001 – At Infierno: Phillip is having dinner with Michelle. He brought her a teddy bear for the baby. She asks how he is doing and tells him she is sorry about his divorce. He says he is spending time with his children. The kids enjoy themselves but they know something is wrong. He says the kids also miss Beth. She asks if Beth is still in San Cristobel. Phillip starts talking about Edmund and wondering why Beth would chose him. Michelle sees a parallel between her and Danny. Phillip says this is different. He thinks anyone can talk to Danny for five minutes and know there is good in him. He doesn’t think there is any good in Edmund. Michelle thinks Beth may believe she is in love. Phillip thinks she may think that but he believes she is just clinging to him because of her loss.

At Towers Olivia comes in to pick up a dessert she had ordered. She overhears the host taking a reservation for Tony Santos and a date that evening at 8 pm. Olivia overhears the conversation and makes a reservation for five at the same time. She says to herself that Tony is taking someone else out and thinks that may help Marah see the light.

Tony and Catalina come in. They are being chaperoned by Abuela’s driver. Tony tells him to sit at the bar and he and Catalina talk about the ruse they are putting on acting as a couple. Catalina is impressed with the restaurant but knows Tony would rather be with Marah. Tony tells Catalina she is a good friend, but he would love to see Marah right now. Some Latin music starts playing and Tony realizes Abuela set it up so he asks Catalina to dance. They do and she suggests they have a good time and not worry about anything. Just then the Lewis clan walks in and they all see Tony dancing with Catalina. Catalina and Tony sees them too and Tony stops dancing. Catalina tells him to keep dancing and let Josh see with his own eyes that he is with someone else. Marah is upset and Josh tries to cheer her up. Catalina tells Tony to sit down and she will explain everything to Marah. Sam tells Marah Tony is a fool and apologizes too. Catalina motions to Marah and they go to meet in the lady’s room. Marah goes by Tony on the way and glares at him. In the lady’s room, Marah is furious. Catalina tries to explain the reason for the date. It is the perfect set up so Abuela’s driver would watch them and report on their date to her. Olivia comes up to the door and listens as Catalina spills the plan to Marah. Marah realizes that this will work and the parents will get off their cases. Catalina tells Marah she did this for her and Marah says after this she should stay away from Tony. Catalina gets upset and says she will stop helping them, lying for them and passing notes between them too. Marah apologizes for being mean to Catalina just as Olivia walks in. Marah asks Olivia how long she has been standing there and she says long enough.

My Comments:
I am sometimes truly stunned by what the highlight clippers chose to leave out. I can’t believe they haven’t put in this Phillip-Michelle dinner scene. I really wish I had it, even though just the description I think underlines the point. The near family connection between Phillip and Michelle is an important one and one that is not played nearly enough. Although sadly not played enough, the Phillip-Danny relationship is an important one on the Springfield landscape. As it is, it plays across a handful of scenes over the years. This is one of them.

I really appreciate the sibling interaction here between Marah and Shayne. It’s so real and how Jeva responds to it like real parents too. I just don’t know why Reva repeatedly insists on marrying men she doesn’t love. Frankly I think her best non-Josh choices were Sean of the island and HE she didn’t marry and Richard who I liked far more with Reva than Cassie.

Poor Sam, they really never did give Sam a storyline. His pursuing a romance with Marah when she absolutely had no interest in him, got very sad, very quickly. Especially because he could have been a great romantic interest for someone. I’m thinking either Susan if they’d kept her or maybe playing with Holly as Mrs. Robinson. Oh, Josh Marah did find her Josh, you just won’t accept it. It would have been so much better for Marah if you had.

I’m not exactly sure what days this is from. It falls somewhere in here. Since I don’t have a description to pair this with this is mostly comment, but I think for this it works.

Michelle walks into Danny’s Infierno office and finds Abuela waiting there. They have a confrontation. It’s really kind of an important scene. Michelle and Abuela stake their claims to Danny’s life. They are both right to a certain extent. Abuela is right that Michelle did come in and try to change Danny’s life and did really make him feel that he wasn’t good enough, even though it was not her intent. That was one of the main reasons they started the divorce in the first place. Michelle is right that Abuela only excepts Danny’s “free will” to the extent that it agrees with her and that Abuela is manipulating Danny and got her way through Carmen’s death.

Although I still wish they’d made this Abuela someone different (she couldn’t be a Great-Aunt or something and have Abuela #1 die if they didn’t want her on anymore?), this version had a conversation with Michelle very near the end of Joie’s run as Michelle where she basically talks Michelle into asking for a divorce. This scene is a repudiation of that scene as they cover much the same ground, but this time Michelle isn’t having any of it. She’s standing up and showing her inner steel, which is as it should be and personally I think a big part of the reason Danny fell in love with her in the first place.

Danny comes in and Michelle and Danny argue. They talk about everything going on and Michelle gives Danny a sonogram photo. Michelle mentions the recently passed Valentine’s Day but for some reason doesn’t mention the anniversary of their church ceremony even though it would have helped her argument. A few days later Abuela gives Danny a hard time about Michelle and basically tells him to go out and have sex to keep Michelle from distracting him. Abuela also specifically mentions how much Danny reminds her of Miguel. Of all the untold stories Guiding Light left behind I think this one Abuela just hinted at, was Miguel really like Danny, is the most intriguing.

Not sure which date this is from – Tony and Catalina go to Company after their date at Towers and run into Michelle who tells him to fight for Marah. A few days later Michelle invites Tony to join her for breakfast and Company where she tries to get information out of Tony and get him on her side.

Wed., Feb. 28, 2001  – David comes in and tells them he has news that Danny Santos will be the target of a major backlash from the other mob families. Harley says all her sources say they haven’t heard anything from the Santos’s in a long time. Frank thinks maybe Danny is trying to go straight and Harley agrees that was why Marah was kidnapped. David wonders why Frank is so lenient with Danny. Frank said he got a break and changed. David thinks someone is going to make trouble for Danny very soon. Harley and Frank are worried about Michelle and Marah. Harley says maybe Danny tried to take the family legit and couldn’t. At the Bauer House: Michelle is talking to the baby when Rick walks in and teases her about scaring the baby by singing. Michelle is worried about Danny. She is intent on getting him away from his family. Rick says maybe he can’t get away. Danny knows the mob’s rules. Michelle tells Rick he is supposed to be on her side. Rick tells Michelle he is worried for her and the baby. Danny may know best about protecting them. Michelle is not afraid and wants to help Danny. At Infierno: Tony comes into Danny’s office. He says Michelle is on the warpath. Danny leaves to see Michelle and asks Tony to lock up. Danny arrives at the Bauer house and Rick leaves. He asks her why she is asking Tony for help. If she loves him, she has to back off and give him room. When she asks questions, she is only putting herself in danger. She can’t know anything and beyond that she was talking to Tony in a public place. Michelle says only May was there, and she would never hurt Danny. She asks why Danny is so upset. Danny: “You have to think of our baby!:  Michelle: “OUR baby?” Danny (realizes slip): “Your child.” He tells her he has to leave and she says she will be coming by the club later but he tells her not to. She says she doesn’t want to see him hurt. She says she didn’t understand before and she will stop asking questions. Danny says she has to stop knocking on doors that shouldn’t be opened. Danny explains he has to keep what’s going on secret from Michelle. Danny walks out and Michelle says to herself she won’t ask him any questions but will get her own answers. Back at Infierno: Tony says to himself that Michelle is one fierce chick. His cell phone rings; it is Marah. She is alone at her house and is upset. He runs out to see her handing May the keys and asking her to lock Danny’s office. He leaves and May acts like she hit the jackpot. She goes in and over to Danny’s computer. She gets a call from someone and tells him or her that there is a password protector on the computer that if she puts in a wrong code it will send an alert message after the fourth time. She tells the person to find out a way around it and she will call him back. She goes upstairs to work a party. Michelle comes sneaking into Danny’s office. She goes to the computer and tries to figure out his password. She hears someone coming and ducks under the desk. May walks in and Michelle hides behind the desk chair.

Thurs., March 1, 2001 – At Infierno: In Danny’s office, Michelle hides in the darkened room as May sits at his desk. May tries to push the chair back and surprised when she can’t slide it back, she turns and sees Michelle. May helps her up and asks her what she is doing there. Michelle says that she was trying to check into Danny’s business plans in his computer. May says she understands. Michelle asks her not to tell Danny. May says why wouldn’t she? Michelle says if she tells, she will have to explain why she was on the computer and what she was looking for. May tries to claim that Danny lets her play games on his business laptop, but Michelle knows that a lie and that something must be up. May changes her voice and says she was looking for the same thing Michelle was looking for. She tells her that it’s time they got to know each other better. Michelle asks who it is May works for but May doesn’t want to tell until she gets some answers. Michelle isn’t interested and May says she can help Danny or take him down, based on what Michelle decides. Michelle tells May she isn’t afraid of her. She wonders which family she works for. May tells her she doesn’t want to hurt Danny. She goes on to say her real name is Mary Murdo and she is a Special Agent from the FBI Organized Crime Unit. Michelle asks May if she sleeps with all the people she investigates. May said it was part of the job. She tells Michelle if she helps them, maybe they can cut Danny a deal. Michelle won’t do it. She won’t play the game. May says it is not a game. Michelle says she is going to Danny and tell him who she is. She says if May cares about her health she should leave Springfield and never look back. May says she is not going anywhere and neither is the investigation. May tells her that Carlos is in deep and thinks Danny was only involved briefly. She tells Michelle if she gets on board, she can save him. Otherwise, Danny will go down with the rest of them. She asks Michelle to just meet with her boss next week. Danny walks in and wonders what is going on. May tells Danny she had a migraine and came down looking for medication. Danny is suspicious that she was looking in Danny’s office and Michelle tells him she is lying. Michelle says she and May were talking about him. She tells him she had to know something’s about his fling with May and now that they have spoke everything is fine. Danny thought Michelle was okay with it. She tells him she thought she was but she had to talk to May and now she is fine. May says she had better get back to work. Danny wonders why Michelle is there since he told her to stay away. Michelle says she just had to talk to May and she leaves. Outside, May tells Michelle she has 24 hours to talk with her or it will be out of May’s hands. Back in the office, Danny looks around and checks him computer. He sees something that bothers him and he runs out of the office and looks around.

My Comments:

There are some parts of the Manny story that you just find yourself wanting to rewatch out of order. This is one of them. It’s got humor filled straight talk (mostly courtesy of Aunt Meta), drama, normal couple behavior, and acceptance. Plus this is really only one of two times during this return that Claire acts like the Claire who was part of the supercouple with Fletcher Reade. You can see a glimpse of who she used to be. But besides showing off the Manny love story, it’s also a true showcase for Meta. The Meta-Claire and Meta-Danny scenes are so opposite, but truly great tough, smart woman stuff and Meta fully sees now that Danny is nothing like her ex Ted White like I truly think she was afraid he was when Manny first got together. It’s also a special exception for Manny because Michelle labor stretches out over a week, where most mothers get 2 episodes at most. Pay special attention to the running references to whether Michelle will take drugs or not, Rick’s memories of early days, and finally Michelle’s small bit of payback where she refuses to tell Danny’s the baby’s sex now he’s willing to admit he wants to know until the baby is born. It’s just a great sequence and I hope you’ll enjoy it.

Fri., March 2, 2001 – At the Bauers: Michelle is with Meta telling her about how she went into Danny’s office and found May. She explained that May is an undercover FBI agent trying to take down the mob. Meta is surprised. Meta: “That little twit?” Michelle goes on to tell her that May has asked her to help her with the promise of helping Danny in the end. Michelle tells her that her first instinct was to rip out all of May’s fake blonde hair and strangle her for setting up Danny but now she wonders if this may be Danny’s way out. Meta tells her to be careful before she does anything. She reminds her that others, like Tony, will also be taken down. Michelle doesn’t think Tony will get caught up in it because Danny is purposely keeping him sheltered. Meta also reminds her that Danny may see this as the ultimate betrayal and may never forgive her. Claire shows up to work with Meta on the lighthouse rehabilitation fundraiser. Claire speculates Michelle is holding out on her. Michelle says she doesn’t know what Claire means, afraid she knows something about the mess she finds herself in. Claire looks at her and says the baby has dropped. Michelle is concerned, but she is in a safe time for a normal delivery albeit a little early. She goes over and feels Michelle’s abdomen and says the baby is not breech and should be fine. She suggests Michelle call her doctor tomorrow. Claire starts going over the list of donations for the fundraising. Donations to be auctioned off include: A golf outing, lunch for 8 at the Lakeland Country Club and a weekend at Towers in the honeymoon suite. Meta lists off some other former donors and asks if she got their donations.Claire didn’t and says they didn’t want to deal with her since she wasn’t part of the in group and generally complains about her lot in life. Michelle starts having contractions. Claire comes over and tells her to relax and breathe. They get Michelle into a chair and Claire asks her to describe what she is feeling. She does and Claire said that it is contractions, but it may be a false labor and not the real thing. Michelle asks if she should get her bag just in case. Claire thinks that is a good idea. Meta offers to get it but Michelle says she wants to walk around a bit; maybe it will make her feel better. When Michelle is out of the room, Meta tells Claire not to use Michelle’s vulnerability to get closer to her. She tells her that would be selfish. Meta tells her that they have a doctor in the family and as soon as Rick gets home they will no longer need Claire’s services. Michelle comes back in and doubles over in pain. She thinks its labor. Claire tells her they have to get her to the hospital. Michelle asks Meta to call Danny. Claire doesn’t want her to, saying if Danny wanted to be there he would be. Meta calls Danny and tells him what happened and to meet them at the hospital. He asks if they are OK and starts to leave on the run, but then stops and says it would be best if he didn’t. He asked Meta to call and let him know they both are OK when it’s over. Meta hangs up and tells Claire and Michelle to go on to the hospital; she has something to take care of. Michelle:“What did he say?” Meta: “The wrong thing. Go on without me. I’ll be there as soon as get a hold of the Father of The Year.” Later in Danny’s office, Meta walks in and tells him to come to the hospital.Meta: “You walk out that door on your own or I’ll pull you by the ear and don’t think I can’t.” He tells her that every time he steps into Michelle’s life he messes it up and he’s not going to do that anymore. Meta tells him to stop feeling sorry for himself. Michelle needs him now; she needs him to hold her hand. Meta: “Danny stop wallowing in the past your future is about to burst into your life and you’re going to be there  to see it whether you want to be or not.” She asks him what he thinks the baby will look like. Meta: “Will it be brunette like you or blonde like Michelle. Ten little pink fingers and toes. Your son or daughter is almost there and can’t wait to meet you.” Danny tells her they will take his car.

Alternative Version

Mon., March 5, 2001 – At the Bauers: Rick comes in and sees no one is home. He calls out for Michelle and Meta and looks for a note but can’t find one. He is getting worried just as Frank arrives. Frank asks what is wrong and Rick tells him he can’t find anyone. He says there was no note left and he is getting worried that they may have been kidnapped. Frank says there is no sign of forcible entry. Rick tells Frank he and Michelle argued about Danny earlier that evening and she was very upset. Michelle is fixated on getting Danny away from his family and he thinks she is a sitting duck. Frank thinks Michelle is okay or they would have heard something by now. Right on cue, the phone rings. Meta is calling to tell Rick that Michelle has gone into labor and she and Meta and Danny and Claire are at the hospital. Meta: “See what happens when you go off in a snit?” Rick grabs his things tells Frank what is going on and they run to the hospital. At Cedars: Michelle is in labor and Claire has taken over her case since Dr. Sedwick is on vacation. (Ed. note: That actually happened with me and my mom too. Her doctor was on vacation so a different one in the practice delivered me.) Michelle is working on breathing through her contractions. Claire gives her some water to sip on and puts a wet cloth on her head. Claire tells Michelle is doing a wonderful job. Michelle says the baby is about 4 weeks early and she asks Claire why she is in labor so soon. Claire says maybe the baby got bored and wanted to get on with the show. Michelle seems confident in Claire and is glad she is there. Meta arrives with Danny. Claire tells him to get out of the room infuriating Michelle. Claire tells Danny to leave because he will jeopardize Michelle’s welfare in delivery. Meta stands up to Claire and tells her Michelle asked for Danny and Danny is there. She tells Claire to shut up and get out of the way Meta: “Do you shut up and get out of the way or I will shift into an even uglier gear.” Michelle calls for Danny and he goes in to her. He steps into the delivery room a man transformed; he seems to have melted completely and has a stunned look on his face. She asks him what’s wrong. Danny: “I never understood what they  meant when they said someone was radiant before right now.” She tells him she was afraid he wouldn’t come and he tells her how persuasive Meta is. She asks him if he can’t admit even now that he wants to be there. Danny: “I’m here because I could not keep away from you or our child even if I tried.”Michelle has another contraction and Danny looks concerned. He wants them to give Michelle something for the pain but she says no. She tells him she has taken the classes and will get through it. Claire buts in and asks if Danny took the classes? Michelle tells her he hasn’t. Claire says he won’t be much help then. Michelle tells Danny to just help her focus on her breathing. He holds her and tells her to breathe with him. He reminds her to think of the baby. He tells her they will soon have a baby to say hello to. The baby’s parents love him or her very much and he or she was made out of love. (Proving that he might not have shown it but that he heard every word she had said to him all along as he’s repeating back what she said to him.) Danny tells Michelle he loves her. She seems very happy but still in labor. Danny wipes her face with the damp cloth trying to help as much as he can. Outside, Rick arrives and Claire tells him that Michelle is fine, medically. Meta speaks up and tells him that Michelle is fine in every way. Claire and Rick go in the room to see Michelle. She has another contraction just as Frank walks in. They are joking with her and she tells them to quit trying to make her laugh, she is trying to have a baby. Danny goes over to Claire and asks her why nothing is happening. Claire gives him a mean look. She tells them both that first time mothers are sometimes long labors. Michelle wonders how people can go on like that for extended periods. One patient recently came in Tuesday morning and delivered Friday night. Michelle reacts and Danny asks Claire if that’s her idea of keeping Michelle calm. Claire tells her that she will get tired and sore but it will be worth it. Danny asks Michelle if she wants to take some pain medication but Michelle says no. Danny tells her she is a brave girl. He knows she never gives up. She tells him she has to know if he is going to be there for her and the baby from day one. She has to know and have his word that he will be there for the rest of their lives. Danny: “I’m going to be a father to this baby and we’re going to be together for the rest of our lives.” He tells her he will, he doesn’t know how, but he will. Rick looks at Claire and they both aren’t happy. Danny tells Michelle they can worry about everything later; he thinks they should just concentrate on having their baby. Rick goes out to see Frank very upset. He says that someone is out to get Danny and now he is back with Michelle. Frank tells Rick that he thinks the baby coming now is only the beginning of their problems. Rick goes back into the room. Claire tells Michelle she is 3cm dilated. Danny is wondering how far it has to get (10 cm). Claire says the baby may take its time. Rick wants to go home and get his catcher’s mitt; Michelle is annoyed and threatens her brother with a bat to the knees. Rick goes back out and tells Frank they could be in there for a while and this could get rough.

Alternative Version:

Tues., March 6, 2001 – At Cedars: Michelle is still in labor. Danny asks her again if she wants some painkillers but she says no. She asks him to rub her back but changes her mind. Danny wants to call Tony and ask him to cover for him at the club. He calls and tells Tony the news. At the Santos Estate: Tony is with Abuela and Ray. Danny says they are having a baby but an irritated look from Michelle makes him add that Michelle is doing all the work. Tony tells Ray that Michelle is having the baby. Danny says it could take a while and he needs Tony to cover for him at the club. He says he will and they hang up. Tony tells Ray that Danny sounded like he wanted to laugh and cry at the same time.Ray: “Thank you, God.” He tells Tony that Danny is back and his prayers have been answered. He and Tony leave to go to the hospital. Abuela calls Carlos and tells him she needs to see him now. Back at Cedars: Ray and Tony come into the hospital and ask Claire if they can see Michelle. She tells them they can, but Tony is a bit squeamish about it. He tells Ray that this is private and they shouldn’t be there. Ray tells him that it is a natural event. Just then they can hear Michelle screaming from inside her room. Tony tells Ray there is nothing natural about that. He starts to run but Ray tells him he will drag him in by the ears. Inside, Michelle is happy to see Ray and Tony. They ask her if she is busy and she laughs. She thanks Tony for the flowers he brought her. Tony is nervous and Michelle can tell. Ray pulls Danny aside and tells Danny he is proud of him and that everything is right. Ray: “Just look at your face.” (Danny is still looking stunned, but very, very happy.) Danny tells him he knows it. Ray gives Michelle a necklace with Madonna and child on it to protect her. He tells her he will offer mass for her and Danny and their little one that evening. Michelle thanks him but tells him she will have to miss it. Danny puts the necklace on Michelle and cools her off by wiping her face with the damp towel. They are already the tactile twosome again. Michelle calls over to Tony and hugs him. Just then she has another contraction and screams. When it had subsided she apologizes to Tony for scaring him. He is ready to bolt. Danny: “You get used to it after awhile.” Outside the room, Rick comes over and looks in the window. He sees Frank still standing guard outside the room. Rick: “Oh boy, a room full of criminals.” Frank is nodding off and Rick and Claire offer him an unused room to crash in. He says he will take them up on it but will call Harley to replace him first. Ray and Tony leave and say goodbye to Frank and Rick. Rick asks Frank how Danny is going to handle his new family along with his old family at the same time. Back in the room, Michelle and Danny are laughing about Tony’s reaction to her contractions. Michelle: “It’s like he just stumbled into a National Geographic Special.” Danny: “I think the miracle of birth is just a litttttttttle too much for Tony.” She says she is happy to call Tony and Ray her family. She wishes both families would be able to get along so they could all be there waiting together. Danny tells her that she shouldn’t worry about it right now and they will just take them in shifts. She tells him the only thing that matters is meeting their baby. Danny is teasing her about whether it is a boy or girl but Michelle tells him he had his chance and now he will have to wait along with everyone else. He tells her she is a tough chick. She says he’s darn right. Frank is still waiting outside Michelle’s room when David and Harley arrive. Harley tells Frank they will take over so he can rest. David says if Danny is leaving with Michelle and the baby, he has to know he is the target of retaliation. Frank says he does have to know and he will tell him but he isn’t going to ruin the birth of his child for him. He says he will tell them before they leave. Harley sees Rick, who is upset that Michelle is in such pain. She and Rick go in to see Michelle. Michelle asks Harley for advice and she suggests Michelle yell very loud. Michelle: “Does that help?” Harley: “I don’t know, but it scares the men, so it’s fun.” Danny shoots her a look, like “Thanks a lot.” Harley asks Danny if Michelle is condemning his very existence yet? Danny tells her not so far, but he’s sure she will soon. Michelle is having stronger contractions and Rick starts to leave. Michelle tells him to get back there and not leave that room. He doesn’t want to stay but she tells him to come over and tell her a joke. She tells Rick she misses her mom, she wishes she could have been there to meet Danny and the baby. She was a great mom and would have been a wonderful grandmother. Rick tells her that Ed was a mess when she was born but Maureen was the strength of the family. He makes up a funny story about how overprotective Ed was of her when she was born. Rick: “You were the perfect excuse and I’m looking forward to the next one. Believe me I’m  starting to get weird looks from the people in the Santa Claus line without a child in tow.”Rick says he is looking forward to being an uncle to little Frederico. Michelle and Danny look at him and he asks if they weren’t naming the baby after him. He goes on to tell them how he will teach the baby, boy or girl, to work the grill. Michelle: “Girls don’t grill that’s like a Bauer bylaw.” Rick goes on and on about how he needs help with the grill, that everyone makes fun of his burgers, and he’s had to seek counseling for his grilling shortcomings. Michelle tells Rick he is the best and she loves his burgers. She can’t imagine going through this without him. Danny kisses Michelle’s forehead. At the Santos Compound: Abuela is meeting with Carlos. She tells Carlos that Danny has gone to Michelle and his child, he is out. Carlos understands how this pains her. Abuela wants to renegotiate the contracts with the other families. Danny will keep their secrets for the welfare of his wife and child and they will leave him alone. Abuela tells Carlos he has her reassurance that Danny will keep quiet. Carlos is worried about Tony, thinking he is loyal to Danny. She says he is loyal to the leader of the family and very anxious. One day he will want that position. She thinks they can count on Tony. She tells him that she will have a careful conversation with him.

Alternative Version (Dialogue a little clearer in some of this):

Full Episode:

Wed., March 7, 2001 – Tony tells May about Michelle being in labor and Danny being with her. Tony tells her that he always knew Danny would step up to the plate as soon as the big day came. Tony went into Danny’s office and May got on her cell phone and called her boss. She tells him that she just found out why Michelle hasn’t gotten back to her and they should give them a few days. She thinks that now Michelle will have more motive than ever to put the Santos family behind bars. Maria comes in and May ends her call. She asks for Tony. May goes to get him. Tony comes out and kisses Abuela and she tells him they need to talk. May tells them she will go upstairs to do some work. Tony tells Abuela about Michelle and that there is no baby yet. May is on the stairs with a listening device eavesdropping. Abuela tells Tony that Michelle and Danny are as close as ever now and she believes Danny will be leaving the family. She tells him that she was worried at first but now she is confident with her decision. She goes on to tell him that the Internet trading idea was a bad one and has brought a lot of trouble to their family. She says if Danny wants out, she will let him go and give him her blessing along with her protection. She continues to say that once Danny is out, she will need someone to take his place. She is too old and it must be a Santos, someone brave and strong. She asks Tony who he thinks that might be? Abuela tells Tony he was wonderful instincts. Once Danny is out, she will take back the reins for a while and teach Tony what to do. He needs a little more judgment and patience and then one day he will become head of the Santos Family. May is still listening. Abuela thinks Tony is better suited for the job than Danny. Danny has a soft spot but not Tony. He had a moment of weakness with Marah, but now is seeing Catalina who is more suitable. She asks how he feels about her offer. He tells her that is all he has ever dreamed of. Marah walks in and tells Tony she needs him. Tony and Abuela stare at her. Tony yells at her that he was talking to Abuela. She apologizes to Maria. Marah tells him this is important and he tells her it isn’t as important as him talking to his Abuela. Tony tells Marah that he does want to talk to her and she should wait for him upstairs. He is harsh with her and says, “Go!” Marah goes upstairs and Abuela says Marah seems to think they are still a couple. Tony tells her that just isn’t the case and Marah will know that after he talks to her. He tells Abuela he is honored by her offer and kisses her. She tells him to take his time to think about it. May comes in and asks if Tony is okay and he says he couldn’t be better. At Cedars: Michelle is still in labor. She is squeezing Rick and Danny’s hands. She still doesn’t want any drugs but she is getting upset.Danny: “Honey, take the drugs, you’re weak, you’re tired, YOU’RE BREAKING MY HAND!” Harley tells David that they have a secret weapon against the mob if they show up, Michelle’s screams. Ross arrives to give moral support. Ross holds her hand and comforts her. He is her surrogate dad in Ed’s place. Michelle cries out and says she thinks the baby is coming now. Danny is holding her and telling her he will make it up to her that he stayed away so long. He said he will be the best husband and father he can be. Claire comes in to examine her. She tells Michelle that it is time and she should push. She pushes and screams and Claire tells her to stop for now. Danny is trying to hold Michelle who is now begging for drugs. Claire tells her it is too late now. She tells Michelle to conserve her strength and not push right yet. Michelle is crying and turns to Danny and tells him that he did that to her and she hates him. After screaming at him awhile he hugs her again and Claire tells her to push again. She does and an alarm goes off. Claire tells Rick the baby is in trouble.

Thurs., March 8, 2001 – Ross says the labor is in extra innings. Everyone decides to take up a baby pool guessing weight, sex, and time of birth. Everyone puts in their cash and Ross writes down all the guesses. Dr. Grant goes back over to David and tells him that three cops in the waiting room and a Santos delivery inside makes him very nervous. He wonders if he needs to know anything. David tells him that everything is fine. Inside the labor room, Michelle wonders what is wrong with the baby. His heart rate is down. Claire tells Danny to sit Michelle up so she can breathe easier. He does and Claire and Rick look at the monitors. She is concerned that the cord may be wrapped around the baby’s neck. Michelle is scared and Danny is trying to reassure her telling her they can do it together. Claire says they need to do a forceps delivery and tells Michelle that she needs to push with everything she has during the next contraction. Michelle tells her another one is coming and she pushes as hard as she can. Danny is trying to help the best he can but Michelle is so tired. Michelle pushes again and is screaming to Danny how much she loves him. Claire tells her that she sees the baby’s head. She pushes one more time and the baby is out but they don’t hear anything. Michelle is scared and Danny asks if something is wrong. Claire works a little on the baby and he starts crying. Rick says the kid has a good set of lungs. They count the fingers and toes and tell Danny and Michelle they have a beautiful baby. Claire wraps him up and hands him to Michelle. Danny keeps asking the sex of the baby. Danny said he would look for himself then and starts unwrapping the baby’s blanket. Michelle stops him and introduces him to his son. Claire says he is perfectly healthy and the most beautiful baby she has ever seen next to Michelle. Danny gets the baby and holds his son. The baby is crying and mom and dad can’t stop smiling. Danny introduces him and Michelle to the baby as Mom and Dad. He tells him he isn’t going anywhere and that is a promise. Rick and Claire stand back talking about wanting to babysit. Rick goes out and tells everyone the baby was born and Meta won the baby pool having everything right. They want a name so Rick goes back in and asks the parents. He again suggests Frederico. Michelle said they haven’t even thought about it. She thought of naming him for one of their fathers or maybe even Danny Jr. Danny wonders if having his family’s last name isn’t enough bad news for his son.

Fri., March 9, 2001 – At Cedars: Rick comes out to a waiting room full of people and tells them about the baby. Everyone wants a name but he has nothing to give just yet. May, Catalina, Ray, Tony, Rick, Meta, David, Frank, Harley are standing by. Phillip comes in and asks Harley how she is. Rick tells Phil about Michelle’s baby and Phil congratulates Rick. Claire comes out and tells Rick there is a problem. There is a huge crowd and they will get in trouble with security. Rick suggests having Michelle hold up the baby so everyone can see him. Claire thinks that is a great idea and she goes back in to ask the new parents. Michelle is laying in a hospital bed in her room. Danny lays on the bed as close as he can possibly get protectively surrounding Michelle and the baby is in Michelle’s arms as they both stare at it in wonder and happiness. (Rick later tells Philip that they made a perfect circle of happiness and to be part of a circle like that was all that Rick ever really wanted.) They seem so happy. Claire thanks Michelle for letting her be a part of this. Michelle thanks her for her help. Claire talks to the baby and he grabs her finger. Claire thanks Michelle again for trusting her. Michelle says the baby has changed the world and just think of the wonders he’ll do once he’s a whole day old. Claire tells Michelle there is a crowd of visitors outside and they could disrupt the hospital. She proposes that they all come in at the same time and Michelle can hold up the baby. She thinks that is fine and Claire goes to get the gang. Everyone comes in and Ray blesses the baby. Danny tells them that they have been able to find the perfect name for the baby. Michelle continues that since the baby brought their families together they wanted a name to show that. So they found one name in common for the middle name, Frederico, for her brother and great-grandfather and Danny’s uncle (Ray and Tony’s father). As for the first name they are going to name the baby after her grandmother Bert because his eyes look so much like hers and she was so full of unconditional love. So Danny introduces the baby as Robert Frederico Santos. Everyone clapped and went to see the baby. Later, Danny comes out of the room to talk to Ray about the christening and David asks him if they can speak to him. He tells Danny that they have learned the other crime families are angry and wanting to take him down. He suggests Danny and his little family leave town for a while. Danny tells him he hasn’t heard a thing and walks away. He goes over to Ray and tells him he wanted to talk about the baptism. Ray said he would handle everything. Danny asked him if he would be the godfather but Ray said he couldn’t. He explains that he can’t christen the baby and be the godfather, it’s against the rules. So Danny asks Tony. Tony is reluctant and you can tell he is torn by this and his talk with Abuela. He finally agrees. Danny tells everyone he has to go get some rest and he leaves. Tony tells Maria about the new baby. Maria says her son’s grandchild. She is there and her son is not. She asks Tony if he has thought about her proposal. He says he feels stirred up. Danny asked him to be the baby’s godfather and Michelle treats him like a brother. He wonders how they would treat him if they knew he was taking over. Maria tells him they may feel betrayed and his thinking about it means he has a soul, proving to her that he is the man for the job. She tells him a man in his position must make many sacrifices but will earn great rewards. She wants him to take time to decide. Tony promises to consider it and tells her the baby is great looking. She smiles. Back inside, Michelle wakes up and the baby isn’t where he should be. She looks around and sees Maria sitting by the bed holding Robbie.

My Comments:

Mon., March 12, 2001 – At Cedars: Michelle wakes up to Maria holding baby Robert. She asks her to give her the baby and Maria tells her that he was restless while she was sleeping. She tells Michelle he is a strong boy with a mind of his own. Michelle thanks her and asks her what she wants. Abuela says she wanted to see the new family member and thought if she waited for an invitation she may never get one. Maria asks about the baby’s wristband that says, “Baby Bauer” and not Baby Santos. Michelle tells her that she was admitted as “Michelle Bauer,” but Robbie is a Santos. Maria goes on to tell her that the baby looks just like Danny. She plays with the baby a little more and hands him back to Michelle. Maria tells Michelle that she will be a good mother because she loves her son more than anything. She tells her that it is a love that will change her and she would put her own life on the line for him, she remembers it well. Michelle tells her that they named the baby Robert Frederico, and Maria seems pleased. She calls him “Rico.” Michelle reminds Maria that this is the same baby Maria sentenced to death when she let Carmen take Michelle to the docks. Maria wonders if that is what Michelle is going to tell ‘Rico’ when he gets older. Michelle says people don’t change. Abuela asks if there is anything Michelle needs and she tells her yes, that they need Danny. Just then, Claire comes in and is angry. She calls Maria a witch and tells her to get out. Michelle tells Claire it is okay. She doesn’t want to frighten the baby. Maria confronts Claire about Carmen’s resurrection. Claire tells her that Michelle knows what she did and why and she better not be trying to turn her daughter against her. She accuses Maria of hating Michelle and tells her to stay away. Abuela disparages Claire’s sudden maternal instinct. She thanks Michelle for treating her with respect and allowing her to see the baby and she leaves. Claire asks Michelle why she didn’t call security. Michelle thinks that seeing the baby will make him real to Maria. She thinks she already loves him and will protect him. Robbie’s next visitor is Alan who brings flowers for both Michelle and Claire (who he is currently dating) and a piece of solid gold jewelry for Robbie. (It isn’t clear what.) Later, Michelle is holding her baby telling him she has a lot to learn. They are alone and she tells him it is nice being with him without the crowd that has been in that room all day. She starts singing “Braham’s Lullaby” to baby Robbie.

Tues., March 13, 2001 – Danny comes in and tells Tony he is heading back to the hospital. He sees Tony’s face and asks him what is wrong. He tells him he looks wiped out. Tony tells him he didn’t get much sleep. Danny thanked Tony for being the godfather of his little boy. Danny tells Tony that he has heard things and he wants to know if Tony heard anything about any threats against him or Michelle or Robert. Tony tells him he hasn’t heard anything and asks Danny if he thinks it is really that serious. Danny doesn’t know. He hopes not. He tells Tony he has to go to the hospital and see his kid. Abuela comes in and she asks Tony to stay. He tells them he has to know if Danny is in danger. Abuela tells him she told him the other families weren’t happy but she asked them to leave Danny alone. Carlos tells Maria that her request to protect Danny was denied. Maria asks what he means. He tells her that they don’t want to risk it. Maria is upset. Carlos tells her that if he weren’t her grandson, she would be the first to say he had to be silenced. Carlos turns to Tony and tells him that after Danny is taken care of, Maria will take over until he is ready to. Tony asks if he is still the man they want. Carlos tells him that he had his doubts but he can see now that Tony is the man for the job. Tony is upset about Danny. He tells him that he is his cousin and he has been good to him and he loves him like a brother. Abuela asks about Michelle and Robert. Carlos said nothing would happen to them. Carlos asks Tony if he is with them. Tony finally agrees that Danny is a problem and he will have to go for the good of the family. Abuela tells Carlos to tell the families they are free to end their problem. At Cedars: Danny holds baby Robert and talks to Michelle about his childhood. He told her he would cry every time his dad left because he feared that would be the day someone would take him out. He tells her that it was a rotten way to grow up. She assures him he will not have to live like that anymore. He tells her he is sorry that he lived like a Santos the past few months. He wants their son to have what he didn’t have, stability and love. She tells him they already have everything they need, they have him. She tells him that now he is a Santos in name only.

Wed., March 14, 2001 – At Cedars: Danny is getting Michelle and Robert ready to take home. He kisses Michelle and tells her that Tony is coming to pick them up but he is a bit late. He holds his son and tells him they are going to take him home. The baby is looking at Danny’s ring, the one that belonged to his father. Danny turns the ring around and tells Robert he doesn’t want him anywhere near the ring or what it symbolizes. Rick comes in and teases Michelle about the hospital bill. Frank comes in and tells them he was wondering if everything was okay. Tony comes in ready to go and the nurse wheels Michelle out of the room. Danny asks Frank why he is really there. Frank tells him he is there to protect them from the threats he had told him about earlier. Danny takes Michelle home and then goes with Tony to see Abuela. She congratulates him on his son. Danny says he wants his son and his wife to be safe and he knows she is the only way for that to happen. Danny asks Maria if she has heard any threats against him but she denies it. He says the cops have heard things and let him in on it. Danny tells her that he is aware she is still in contact with the other families and they respect her and her word. He just wants her to tell them that he will not be a threat and to let him go. Danny thinks if Abuela tells them they will respect her word. She tells him this is foolishness. He tells her he wouldn’t ask her if it wasn’t for his wife and baby. He is asking her for her protection in the memory of her son, and for the sake of her great-grandchild. He will give the families whatever guarantees they want but he needs her help to keep them safe. Danny shows Abuela the ring and promises to take care of her and the family because he loves them. He would never betray her or the other families. He wants her to tell them that. He returns the ring to her and leaves. Abuela is upset and wonders how Danny can be so blind and foolish. Tony is trying to follow Danny but Abuela asks why he keeps staying with him. He says he is trying not to make anyone suspicious. She tells him it will look more suspicious if he sticks to him like glue. Tony asks her why she can’t protect Danny. Abuela says she tried but the family has to do something to regain their strength. She asks Tony if she can count on him and he says he is with her. At the Bauers: Meta is happy to see the baby when the new little family gets there. She takes the baby and starts giving him a tour of the house. Danny takes Tony aside and tells him this is what life is all about. He tells him nothing matters more than the way your kid looks at you and being with the woman you love, not power or any amount of money.

Danny, Michelle and the baby are in the living room with Tony. Danny wants Michelle to sit and relax. Michelle asks Danny why cops have surrounded them the past few days. Danny tries to say they are friends, but Michelle insists on the truth. Danny says a few months ago he decided to take all the families off the street and into a new direction that would be safer for everyone. Some of the old guys didn’t like it, and they kidnapped Marah and followed Michelle around. He thought at first he could convince the others and work with them, but after Marah was kidnapped he knew he had to break ties to find safety for everyone whether he could be with Michelle or not. He had to arrange it so the other families wouldn’t think he was a threat, so he continued with the illegal stock trading. He had to hide in plain sight so the other families would think he was still illegal. He was going to gradually turn everything legal once the heat was off. Michelle wonders why he didn’t tell her all of this. Danny tells her he couldn’t let her be around that danger and he didn’t know if his plan would work. He thinks he should leave so she and the baby will be safe. Michelle tells him that isn’t going to happen. She wants him to stay with them. She asks if Frank knew and he says not even Tony knew. He didn’t want to put anyone at risk. Danny apologizes to Tony for leaving him out. He tells her Frank heard a threat of a hit on him but it was old news. He isn’t worried, but he needs to do one more thing. He says he will take care of it right now and will be back soon. He kisses her and tells Tony to go with him to deliver a message. Outside, Danny reminds Tony that he (Tony) always said he had his (Danny) back and now was his time to prove it. They leave to see Abuela.
Frank comes in and Michelle tells him that Danny told her what was going on. She tells him that Danny is getting out and he will be safe. Rick tells Phillip it is good of him to help Richard. He says some people think he is a control freak, but he knows Phillip just likes to help. Rick is so happy, he says his baby sister had a beautiful baby boy and he is full of joy. He tells Phillip that he went by the hospital room this morning and saw Michelle and Danny in bed with the baby between them, a perfect circle. It made him cry; he has always wanted that picture. He should have had the guts to fight for his marriage the way Phillip fought for Harley. Rick tells Phillip he was always on his side, even though he didn’t show it. He wants to apologize but Phillip says they have been friends for so long there is plenty of time left for them both to have perfect circles.

My Comments:

Mon., March 19, 2001 – At Bauers: Michelle is walking around the house talking to the baby. She tells him things will work out now that they have his Daddy back and she will do all she can for him. There is a knock at the door, it’s May. May claims to be there to bring a baby gift. It’s three of her favorite children’s movie (including The Red Balloon, but not The Wizard of Oz that they were sold out of).  May says she likes Michelle, and Danny is a nice guy caught in a bad situation but the danger is real. She hopes now that the baby is here, Michelle is motivated to cut a deal for her and Danny. Danny comes in having overheard the conversation. Danny: “What kind of deal?” May congratulates Danny on the baby and tries to lie about why she is there. Danny doesn’t let up. Michelle tells her she has to tell Danny the truth. Michelle tells him that she is FBI and that she is trying to find out info on Danny and the other families. May introduces herself as Mary Murdo, FBI special agent. Danny tells Mary she put out for her government. All of his instincts told him that her bimbo act couldn’t be real. She says she really likes old movies and most of all she told him was the truth. She tells Danny that they have to get down to business, federal business. She tries to gets tough. Danny tells May she doesn’t have anything on him. She tells him she does. He tells her to prove it or get out of there. Michelle tells Danny to listen to May. Danny doesn’t want to, but Michelle thinks May can help them. May says she has been authorized to cut him a deal. She can offer him immunity in exchange for his testifying. But she assures him she has enough to send him to jail. She reminds him that his parents are dead and he could be next. She tells him there is a contract out on him and she wonders why he isn’t taking the threat seriously. She asks him to at least meet with her boss. She gives him a phone number and tells him to think about it and get back to her soon. May leaves. Danny says May set him up and he will not help her. Michelle wants him to think about her offer. Danny says he gave his grandmother his word not to betray the other families. Michelle says he should at least talk to May’s boss. Danny says this only proves he will never have peace. Michelle strokes Danny’s shoulder. Danny is worried and says either way he loses. He can either be killed for ratting out his family or spend the rest of his life in jail. He wishes his child had a father he could look up to. Michelle says they will come through it as a family. Danny only wishes he had her faith.

Tues., March 20, 2001 – At the Bauers: Michelle is watching the baby sleep. Danny is talking to her about May and the feds. Michelle tells him that May doesn’t want him to go to prison; she wants to cut him a deal. Danny asks Michelle how long she has known about May. Michelle tells Danny the whole story and how May had probably already gotten into the computer. Danny hopes May had so many headaches trying because there was nothing illegal on it. He tells Michelle he only used a laptop at the house to do anything the feds would find suspicious. Michelle asks if the laptop is still at the house but he tells her he brought it there and he will go destroy the hard drive so there will be no record. Michelle doesn’t think May has a case and that is why she needs Danny’s testimony. Danny says even without a case the Feds can still destroy their lives. Danny says the Feds have a lot of leeway with the RICOH statutes, and they can seize his assets. They can seize the clubs and the shirts off their backs just to apply pressure. Michelle says that doesn’t sound fair. Danny says that is the way the federal government works. Michelle offers to put everything in her name since they are divorced but Danny says it doesn’t work that way. Michelle says it is just “things” and they will survive. Danny says it is like a house of cards, and the other families will see the pressure he is under. Danny says people turn against each other and the feds know this. They are just as ruthless as the mob but they will use the law instead of violence. They will pressure everyone he knows, including Michelle’s family. They will all be buried in red tape and everyone they care about will be in a living hell. The feds will go after Michelle the most trying to get her to talk. Michelle says she is worried about them finding out he the truth about how Carmen died. But she promises she would never tell. Danny says she doesn’t realize how sneaky they can be. Michelle tells him she knows how to get them to leave her out of it and asks him to marry her. Danny says he would love to marry Michelle again for many reasons but not for that. Even besides that it is possible that they will still make her testify but he doubts it, since the prosecutor will see her as a hostile witness. Michelle thinks they can beat them at their own game. She holds out her left hand and says her finger is empty. He tells her it does look naked. She tells him that it is a shame that the unwed mother of his illegitimate son has a naked finger. Danny tells her that they are still married in God’s eyes and he has always felt married to her. Michelle says she also feels married to him but would like it more official. Danny agrees to marry her ASAP. She tells him that was such a romantic proposal so he tries again. He kneels at her feet, takes her hands and asks her to marry him for the fourth time. She says she would marry him 100 times and they kiss. Danny looks at Robert. He and Michelle are holding hands. Danny wants to protect Michelle and his son. She tells him to take it one step at a time. She suggests leaving town. Danny says they are beyond that and he doesn’t feel that is any longer an option. The first step is for him to meet May’s boss and find out what she knows. He can let them think he will cut a deal until he can get the info he needs. He thinks he can buy time to figure out his next move. Danny thinks all May could possibly have is maybe wiretap information or some conversations. He goes upstairs and destroys the hard drive of the computer. He comes back down and calls May. He tells her to set up a meeting. She tells him she will be in touch and hangs up. Michelle thinks this could be a blessing in disguise. Danny hopes so because he thinks it could be the biggest mistake of his life.

(Proposal – Bare finger)

Michelle wiggles her bare finger.

Danny “What’s that about?”

Michelle “This is a bare finger pal, where there should be a gold band.”
Danny “It does look kind of naked.”
Michelle:  ”Yeah, the naked finger on the exhausted, postpartum body of the unwed mother of your illegitimate son.”

Danny: ”That doesn’t sound good.”

Michelle: “That’s because it isn’t.”

Danny: “We’re still married in God’s eyes. I still feel married to you.”

Michelle: “And I to you, but if it’s all the same to you I’d like it in writing all nice and official. My finger is feeling a tad insecure and that kid over there needs a last name.”

Danny: “OK, let’s do it. Let’s get married again as soon as possible.”

Michelle: “Oh what a romantic proposal, I may faint from joy.”

Danny: “That was kind of lame. I admit that. (gets down on one knee and kisses her knee) Michelle Bauer Santos Bauer Santos Bauer Santos Bauer will you marry me for the fourth time.”

Michelle: “I’d marry you 100 times, Danny.”

An alternative version, I think it has a little more of this conversation:

My Comments:

To appreciate the next couple of days, you need to remember that May dated Rick when she first came to town. He even took her to the Lakeland Country Club and dressed up in 1930s-1940s movie style black tie and tails, embarrassing himself in front of his friends for her.

Wed., March 21, 2001 – At St. Michael’s Tony is sitting in a pew praying. He tells God he wants Him to protect Danny, but he doesn’t think he can. He wonders if that makes him as bad as the guy who will pull the trigger. Ray comes in and sees his brother praying. He approaches Tony and asks him how he got in. Tony said he picked the lock. Ray tells him he could have just called. Tony tells him he needed to be there alone and he didn’t want to see him. Ray asks him what is wrong and asks if it is about Marah. Tony tells him he broke up with Marah and that is all over. Ray doesn’t think it is over her and tells him he should give it a few days. Tony gets angry and says he doesn’t have a few days. Ray says he came there for help so he should open his heart and trust Ray. Tony tells Ray to back off. Ray says his job is to listen and not to judge. Tony says Ray judges him all the time. Ray agrees, but says he wants to make it better. He wants Tony to trust him. He tells Tony if he tells Ray in confession, his confidence will be protected. Ray goes to the confessional and Tony follows. He tells Ray that he is going to be part of a murder. Ray asks who will be killed and Tony tells him there is a hit out on Danny and he can’t stop it. Ray asks Tony if he is sure and advises Tony to warn Danny. He tells him he owes Danny. Tony thinks Danny has to know people are after him. Ray insists that Tony tell Danny or at least Abuela. Tony tells Ray that Abuela can’t stop it either because she is in on it. Ray tells him he has to give Danny a fighting chance. Tony gets up to leave. Ray comes out and pushes him up against the wall and tells him to listen. Ray tells him he has to warn their cousin. He realizes that Tony must be thinking of taking over the family. He tells him that is no way to repay Danny for all he has done for Tony and that Danny’s only “sin” was to decide to leave “the family business” so he can give his child the father he deserves. Ray asks if Tony taking over has anything to do with why he broke up with Marah. Tony isn’t listening. Ray refuses to give Tony absolution since there is no true repentance if he lets this happen, especially for his own gain. Tony tells Ray he can’t tell Tony anything unless he is willing to take off his collar and walk away from the church, since that is Ray’s protection from the world they live in. Tony tells Ray that the love and forgiveness act is a big crock. Ray says he will forgive him, but Tony’s heart is hardened. Tony says he lives in the real world and makes real choices. He doesn’t hide in the Church when his father gets killed. He reminds Ray that he left his brother when their father died, leaving him for God. Ray asks if he is going to let this happen to Danny. Tony says it is what he has to do to survive and Danny should see this coming. Tony leaves and Ray falls to his knees to pray this won’t happen.  (Note from Tony and Marah blog: I feel sorry for Ray during this time.  Ray was always torn between loyalty to his family and being a priest.)

At Olivia’s Marah is sitting on the couch holding her Saint Anthony medal that Tony gave her and thinking about Tony. Sam walks into the apartment and asks how things are at depression central. He tells her cheap chocolate is the wrong way to go. He has a better suggestion. He gives her a present that she opens and smiles at. She has no idea what it is. He tells her it is a tuning fork. He shows her how to hit it and get the vibrations and hold it to her forehead. He tells her it will relax and dissolve her distractions helping her harmonize her feelings, aligning herself and centering her power. Marah thinks it is weird, but seems nice. Sam smiles and tells her it must be working since she hasn’t thought about Tony in 15 seconds. Marah tells him that she doesn’t want to forget about Tony.

Josh and Olivia come in and Olivia tells Josh the children are playing together nicely. Sam and Marah tell Josh about the tuning fork and are laughing. Olivia brings in the chocolates from San Cristobel and Sam goes for a piece. Marah comes over and tries some. Sam tells Josh they finally found something Olivia and Marah can agree on, chocolate. Josh thanks Sam for helping Marah get over Tony.

Wed., March 21, 2001 – At the Bauers: Danny and Michelle are looking at their son. Danny says this is all he ever wanted. Michelle says she knew that all along and that is why she waited for him. Danny says the only reason he continued with illegal trading was to convince the other families he was one of them and not a threat. Now the feds will want him to turn on all the other families. Either he turns them in or deals with the feds. He doesn’t think there is any way out for him. Michelle says maybe May’s boss will have the solution. Danny says if he has to go to prison to protect her and Robert, he will. Michelle tells Danny that prison is not an option. Danny says if he takes the fall, the other families will protect her and the baby, they will see him as their hero instead of as a traitor. Michelle doesn’t want to lose him now that they are back together. Danny says this is the only way. Meta comes in and tells them she could hear them in the kitchen. Michelle tells her about Danny’s decision. Danny tells Meta he would have never went to the hospital if he had knows about May. Meta doesn’t believe he would have turned his back on his son and his wife. She thinks there has to be a way to get out of this. Michelle tells Meta that May asked Danny to meet with her boss. Meta thinks that could be tricky and Danny goes over the drawbacks again. He admits he is only stalling for time by agreeing to meet with the feds. He sits with Michelle on the couch, admiring his son and tells them that every day he spends with them, he will be grateful. Michelle tells him that she has faith that it will work out and they will be together. The phone rings and Meta goes to answer. May tells her that it is May and Meta tells her she thought her name was Mary. May seemed upset that she knew about her true identity, but tells her that she needs to talk to Danny. Danny picks up the phone. May tells Danny her boss will meet with him tomorrow. Danny hangs up and tells Michelle he will wait and see what they have to offer. They talk about the witness protection plan. Meta offers to come along if it is somewhere exotic. Danny thinks he should go alone if that is the case. Michelle says they will go together with their baby. Danny tells her that when you go into the witness protection plan, there is no coming back or contacting your old life. Meta comes over and the three hug.

Thurs., March 22, 2001 – At the Santos Compound: Tony is standing in the dark looking at a picture of Danny. Ray comes in and flips the lights on. He asks Tony if it is any easier facing things in the dark. Ray is still very angry about the hit planned on Danny. Tony tells Ray he can say nothing about it. Ray manhandles Tony and tells him he has to face up to things. Tony pushes Ray back and Ray tells him to go ahead and hit him. Tony backs off and Ray tells him that he knew he couldn’t hurt one of his own. Then he reminds him that Danny is one of them as well. Tony tells him he wished he never stepped into his confessional. Ray tells him that was the smartest thing he ever did. Tony tells him the whole thing is very complicated and Ray should leave him alone or things will be a whole lot worse. Ray wants an explanation, but Tony asks Ray to trust him. Ray says he will pray for him and walks out. Tony says, “You do that, you pray for me.” At the Bauers: Danny is wound up and having a drink. Michelle tells him it has been a long day and things will look better in the morning. Danny says he will not turn over on the other families. If the other families suspect he is meeting with the feds, he is dead. Michelle doesn’t think they will find out. They have come too far to let anything bad happen now. She promises they will make it and be together safely. Danny sighs and says maybe she is right. She asks him to come to bed. He tells her he will be up in a few minutes. Danny fell asleep on the couch and is dreaming about the night on the docks when he shot Carmen. He tells her to hang on and keep breathing but she doesn’t make it and he sees all the blood on his hands. When he looks back down at Carmen, he sees Michelle lying there lifeless. He cries out to her and wakes suddenly. Michelle asks him if he is all right. He tells her he had fallen asleep. He hugs her and tells her that he loves her and doesn’t want anything to hurt her or Robert. Michelle asks about Danny’s nightmare, but he doesn’t want to talk about it. He just wants them all to be safe. He has all these different ideas but nothing that he thinks will work. He tells her that the clock is ticking and there has to be an answer. Michelle says if he rests, an idea will come to him. Danny calls May and tells her that the meeting is off. She says her boss will be disappointed and he better reconsider. She says he is making a dangerous decision and he better have a good reason. Danny tells her that the meeting is off again and she tells him that he doesn’t have any choice in the matter. The feds will move with or without him and it is up to him whether he will go down with the others or not. Danny tells her she doesn’t have enough on him and he doesn’t know enough about the other families. He tells her he will meet with her boss but he needs time to see what he can find out about the others. May agrees but tells him that he doesn’t have long. She is going out on a limb for him because they are friends. Danny tells her that they are most definitely not friends. Danny hangs up and tells Michelle that he bought them a little time. He is still worried. Michelle tells him they have the perfect baby boy and she is sure God would not have given them a son just to take his Daddy away. Danny says he should have been more aware of May’s agenda and they wouldn’t be in this mess. He tells her that he bought some time, but sooner or later he will have to deal with the feds.

My Comments:

Note: To understand Rick’s reactions, in the clips I didn’t find, Rick and Frank competed for new girl in town May before she moved in on Danny. Rick had especially tried to sweep her off her feet and went overdressed to the Lakeland Country Club where he spends a lot of time just because May wanted the 1930s-1940s movie experience.

Fri., March 23, 2001 – Ray told him that he didn’t say a thing but he isn’t going to stand by and let Danny die. He informs Tony that he went to St. Michaels and said his last mass that morning. Tony tells Ray that if he tells what he knows he (Tony) will also be dead, not just Danny. Tony and Ray argue again. Ray tells Tony he prayed and the answer came to him. Ray tells him he has found his peace and he will not leave him. He promises him that he will stand by his brother. He reminds him that the decision he makes will affect him forever and he will have to live with it. Ray tells Tony that he came to the church because deep down he doesn’t want the hit to go down. Tony tells him that wasn’t it. Ray says that there were a lot of other churches in town but you came to mine. He tells him if Danny dies, Tony will see his face every day. He asks if he can live with that. Tony says he can live with whatever gets dished out to him. Ray tells him they can work through this together with God’s help. Ray thinks that is the only way to save both of them (Tony and Danny). Danny and Michelle walk in and say they have something very important they want to ask both of them. They tell them that they are getting married for the fourth time and want them both there. It will be very small with just them and Meta and Rick at Laurel Falls. Danny asks Tony to be his best man. Tony reluctantly agreed and ran out to stock the bar. Danny tells Ray that he will always be his best man but he wanted to make Tony feel included as a real member of the family. Ray asks Danny why the rush, he knows something is up. Danny tells him about May and how she is offering him a deal. Ray tells him to take it and get out of town. Danny tells him he won’t rat out the other families but he had to stall the feds so he told them he would talk with them. Ray looked like he was going to warn Danny about the hit when Danny tells him that he and Michelle would like to have one happy day without thinking of things. Michelle: “Danny, he still looks worried.”  Danny: “He does that….Ray, relax we’ll deal with it after the wedding.”

Mon., March 26, 2001 – At Infierno: Tony comes in dressed for the wedding and asks May if she can cover him for a while. She agrees but asks him why he is so edgy. She admires his clothing and asks why he is dressed up. He says Michelle and Danny are getting married tonight. May is stunned and says divorce isn’t what it used to be. Tony says they want things to be official now that the baby is here. The wedding will be at Laurel Falls. May thinks the wedding is sudden. At the Bauers: Meta comes in to see Michelle getting ready for her wedding. Meta gives her something to wear in her hair. Meta tells Michelle she is proud of her and so glad she invited her and Rick to the wedding. Meta wishes Michelle and Danny health, happiness, humor and trust. Michelle tells her that when they are together they can handle anything and she doesn’t want to waste any more time without Danny. Meta goes to let Michelle get ready. Michelle goes to answer a knock on the door, its May. Michelle: “It’s the Dry Cleaning Guy….Nope the Cigarette Girl.” May asks why she and Danny are in such a hurry to get married. She wonders if it has anything to do with her trying to get out of testifying against Danny. Michelle says May is too suspicious, she and Danny are in love and that is why they are getting married. May tells Michelle that she is on their side, she is there friend. Michelle laughs at that thought and tells her that if Danny testifies against his family, he may be killed or have to leave all their loved ones and go into witness protection. The other alternative is to be harassed by the Feds and go to jail. May says the only way out is to cooperate. Rick: “Cooperate with what?” May lies and tries to dodge the question. Michelle tells Rick she will tell him what is going on. May tries to stop her but she disregards her. Michelle says there is no May, only Mary Murdo. May reluctantly shows her FBI badge and ID. He takes everything in. May is upset at Michelle and tells her that telling more people will not help. Michelle tells her it will help her because she trusts her brother and he knows her and Danny and knows that they are honest. Michelle tells Rick everything and Rick thinks that either way Danny will lose, either jail or death. Robert starts crying and Michelle goes to check on him. May tells Rick that Danny doesn’t have to be hurt by any of this. Rick asks May if she is the girl he dated or did she ever exist. She tells him she was the girl he went out with. He asks if she slept with Danny because she cared about him or was that part of the game. He tells her it was her job. Rick wonders if she was playing with him as well. May says just because she was doing a job, doesn’t mean she didn’t have feelings too. Rick says their relationship was doomed because he didn’t have any info she could use about the mob families. She says she spent time with him because she liked him. It wasn’t part of the job.Rick: “Which I, Mary? Which I?”  He asks about the old movies. She says she got hooked on them during late night hotel stakeouts. She used her experiences to make up another person. Rick says he liked that other person. She apologizes again and tells him that she is sorry they couldn’t have met under better circumstances. Rick: “Yeah, or better yet maybe not at all.”  At Laurel Falls: The Justice of the Peace asks if Danny and Michelle wanted to say anything before they started.

Danny: “This is….something that I came across and I’d like to read it.”

‘There must be a beginning of any great matter, but the continuing unto the end until it be thoroughly finished yields the true glory.’

“That was written by Sir Francis Drake and it makes me think about us for a lot of reasons. It makes me think about you because you never gave up on me, and on what we have, you saw it through to the end and that’s why we’re both here today, together, with our one true glory, sleeping right over there. I just want to thank you for believing in me and, uh, loving me, and helping me to see that I don’t have to be defined by my past and I promise even though we will have our obstacles ahead of us, there’s going to be nothing but glory ahead of us from now on….I’m done.”

Michelle: “After everything we’ve been through I think the most glorious thing would be a normal life, you and I simply together, safety, a child, maybe more children. I can’t think of anything better and I can’t wait to find out how true that is. Day by day over all the years ahead.

Judge Horton: “We’re here to celebrate a marriage, marriage between Michelle Bauer and Danny Santos.”

. The Justice starts in and tells everyone that they are here to celebrate the marriage of Michelle and Danny. They go through the ceremony and exchange rings. Ray notices two men in the woods and goes over to block Danny’s path. Tony comes over and Ray tells him about the men. Tony pulls out a gun and tells Ray he will take care of it. Ray can’t believe they would take Danny out there during the wedding.

(4th Wedding – at Laurel Falls)

Tues., March 27, 2001 – At Laurel Falls: Ray and Tony go over to the guys in the bushes. Ray asks them what they are doing there. They say they are two farmers from up the road searching for their stolen tractor. They apologize for intruding and leave. Meta tells Michelle that she thought an outdoor wedding in March was crazy but she thinks their warmth took care of that and everything is fine. Rick kisses Michelle and says 4th time is the charm. The judge has them come over and sign the marriage certificate. Michelle tells everyone that it is the most perfect day ever and Danny agrees. Meta invites the judge to come to the house for the reception but he tells her that he has another engagement. Michelle asks Rick if he is happy for her and he says yes. Danny goes over and asks Tony and Ray who the two guys were. Ray tells him they said they were farmers. At the Bauer House: Meta unveils the wedding cake as Danny cuts it and feeds it to Michelle. Rick wants some cake too and Meta tells him she saved the beaters and extra frosting for him as well. Ray goes over and tells Tony it is tough to see them so happy, isn’t it. Tony wants to leave but Ray reminds him the best man has to make a toast. Tony goes to make his toast and says that he owes Danny a lot. He took him in and taught him rules to live by. Some people don’t live by those rules and you have to make tough choices but everything seems right at times like these. He tells Danny and Michelle never to take things for granted and live every minute they have together to the fullest. He wishes them only good things and hopes they enjoy every minute together. Rick steps in and promises to babysit and tells Michelle he is happy for her. He tells Danny that he appreciates his commitment and love for his sister. He has never seen Michelle happier. He toasts to a long and happy marriage. Meta suggests music. Danny and Michelle dance and Danny backs away to let Tony dance with Michelle. Danny goes over to Ray and asks about the real story with the guys in the woods. Ray tells him what they said and Danny wonders why two farmers were lurking on his land at night. Ray says they said they were searching for a missing tractor and then they left. Danny tells Ray he is a bad poker player and he doesn’t buy that story. Ray tells him the name of the farmer and Danny says that person died last summer.
Danny and Michelle go over to see Robert (Robbie). They talk about the men in the woods. Ray suggests he talk to Abuela. Danny says if Abuela knew he was in danger, she would tell him. Ray says what about the other families? Danny says he will not turn on them or his family. He wonders what kind of Judas would do that. He thinks that would be unforgivable. Michelle asks Tony to come over and lets him hold his godson. Ray offers a toast to courage. He praises Michelle and Danny and tells them they deserve every blessing and time to watch their son grow. Danny says they asked Tony to be Robert’s godfather because he has turned his life around and will be a good example for their son. He tells him that he is a great guy and Tony gets upset and has to leave. Danny apologizes to everyone for doing that and tells them that Tony doesn’t want anyone to know he has a heart.

Read what happened to Michelle’s wedding dress from the fourth wedding in real life:

My Comments:

Wed., March 28, 2001 – At Infierno: Tony is talking to Carlos. He asks Carlos why he sent those two men to the wedding. Carlos claims he didn’t know anything about it. May is eavesdropping with her little recorder. She listens while Carlos asks if Tony is having second thoughts. Tony says Carlos agreed that Michelle and the baby were off limits. Carlos tells Tony he hasn’t heard when the hit will go down but he will let Abuela and Tony know when he knows. May realizes she has to warn Danny and tries to call him but he doesn’t answer. She leaves to go over to the Bauers. Danny comes in and goes into the safe. He sees Tony and tells him to come over there. He asks him about why he left the party. He asks if he can’t handle the mushy things. Tony tells him it is bad for his reputation to appear sensitive. He asks Danny what he is going to do. Danny tells him he has to get some cash and is going to sell some things. Tony asked him why he would do that and Danny tells him he wants to tell him. Danny tells him that in telling him, he trusts him more than he ever has but he does trust him so he wants to share with him. Tony tells him not to tell him anything major and starts for the door. He turns and tells Danny if he and Michelle are planning what he thinks they are planning to do it fast. Tony runs out and leaves a surprised Danny standing there.
At the Bauer House: Danny comes in his office and calls Abuela on her “secret” line. He wants to know if there is a hit ordered on him but she denies it. She wonders why he is asking. He says there has been talk going around and wonders if the other families would tell her if there was a hit. She says they wouldn’t tell her but she would know. He thanks her and tells her he will talk to her later. Danny hangs up and tells Michelle the wedding crashers must have been Feds. She thinks they should check with Mary. He tells her that Mary is not their friend and he doesn’t want to talk to her. He tells her that he wants one day without someone breathing down his neck. One day to be a husband and a father. She asks him what he is going to do, but he doesn’t know. Michelle says they will figure it out together; they have plenty of options. Danny tells her that he has to go out and will be back late. He tells her that he has to liquidate some of his assets so they will have money to live on. He asks if she will be okay. She tells him that Meta will be home soon. He kisses her and the baby and heads for the door. Frank is at the door when he opens it. He tells them they have a problem. Frank goes over to hold the baby and congratulates them on getting married again. He goes on to tell them that the governor is in town and he has to pull the men from watching the house. Danny says the extra protection isn’t necessary and that there is no one after them. He leaves. Frank tells Michelle it is nice to see her happy again and he hopes it will last this time. She says it will — It has to. Frank is playing with little Robert when May arrives looking for Danny. She lies and says it is about a plumber at the club. Frank asks where she has been and she says she has been working at the club extra to let Danny spend more time with his family. Frank asks May for a date and she asks him if he is divorced yet and he says no. Michelle asks Frank to go warm a bottle for the baby. He leaves and she turns to ask May what is wrong. May tells her that she needs to speak to Danny ASAP. Michelle asks what she needs but May won’t tell her. May says she needs to talk to Danny first and wants to know how to reach him. Michelle is getting scared. She calls Danny on his cell phone, while May waits. Danny’s phone is off. Michelle asks May if the families are plotting against Danny and if he is in danger. Before she could answer, Frank comes back in the room and asks if they are playing nice. Michelle says she was trying to rope May into babysitting sometime. May tells her she will anytime. Frank says he will come over and keep her company when she does. May says she has to get back to work but she really needs to talk to Danny. Frank asks Michelle if something is wrong but she says no. May is outside on her phone telling her boss that they have to find Danny and protect him whether he likes it or not.

Thurs., March 29, 2001 – At the Bauers: Danny comes in with his briefcase full of cash. He tells Michelle that he liquidated everything and at least they will be able to live the life they want no matter where there have to live it. Michelle tells him she was worried about him and couldn’t get him on his cell phone. Danny looked at the phone and said it should have worked. She tells him that Mary came over and was very frightened and she wants to talk to him. He calls Infierno and asks Mary what she wants. She tells him that she has to talk to him but not over the phone. He asks what it is and she tells him it is about his health. Danny hangs up and looks worried. Michelle asks what it is and he tells her he doesn’t know but he has to go talk to her. Michelle asks him not to shut her out and to tell her what is wrong. She reminds him that there are no more secrets between them. He tells her when he finds something out he will tell her. Michelle: “We just took our vows. You made a solemn promise to me that you won’t keep anything from me ever again…..As soon as you do know something you’re going to tell me, right? RIGHT? You don’t need to protect me anymore because we’re partners. We’re a team. Any problem there is to face we’re going to face it together for the sake of our marriage ,our child, and our future.” Danny: “….You know you’ve gotten a lot tougher.”  He kisses her and tells her she has gotten a lot tougher since they met. They kiss again and he leaves. At Infierno: Danny comes into the club and tells Mary she is fired. A man interrupts Danny and Mary, and Mary introduces him as her boss, Gus. Danny tells them to call his attorney if they want anything else. Mary tells him that there is a hit put out on him and they have the information on tape. Danny asks where they got their information. Mary tells them they got it from the source. Gus says everyone is in on it, Maria, Carlos, and even his cousin Tony. Danny wants to know what proof they have. Mary tells him a tape of Tony and Carlos talking about it but no one is aware of the time or place as of yet. Gus tells him they have to have his trust or he will be too dead to testify. Mary and Gus tell Danny that they are using out of town help for the hit and the families have all pooled their money to pay for him. Gus tells him there is a van in the alley right now. He tells him to call Michelle and get her and the baby down and he will put them right into witness protection. Danny wants to know when the hit will go down, but they don’t know. He tells them to let him know when they know something. Gus tells Danny he hopes he starts to trust him soon otherwise his son will never get to know his father. Danny tells them to get out; he doesn’t want to see either one of them in his club again unless they have a search warrant. Danny goes into his office and leans against the wall.

My Comments:

Fri., March 30, 2001 – At the Church: Ray is praying for Danny’s safety and guidance for Tony. Danny walks in and asks him where Tony is. He tells Ray that the hit is real and Tony may be caught in the middle of it. Danny tells Ray that the feds cornered him and told them about the hit as well as Maria’s and Tony’s involvement. Ray asks him if he talked to Abuela. Danny said she denied it but he is ready to believe she is lying. That is why he has to find Tony. He doesn’t think Tony would hurt him but he was hard on him when he first came to town. Danny has tears in his eyes and Ray starts holding his own back. Danny realizes it is the truth and is stunned. Ray tells him he wished he could help him but he can’t. Danny figures he tells him he learned it all in confession. Danny is very angry. He is so upset that Tony told Ray without regard to what it would do to Ray not to tell Danny. He leaves. Ray goes back to his praying and asks God to let Danny have a fighting chance now that he knows. Michelle comes in and asks Catalina if Tony is there. She goes into the office and wakes him up and tells him that he looks like hell. He asks what she wants and she tells him that they need him. She tells him that Danny has always said Tony would have his back and she needs to know that he will help them because she thinks that Danny is going to need him now more than ever. Michelle tells him that the news about the hit may be real. She tells him that Danny needs him. He tells her that he is there. He asks her if she thinks he wants something to happen to Danny. She tells him that she loves Danny and she is very scared. She begs him to please help them. She tells him that Danny loves him a lot and cares so much for him. She tells him that they both need him, he is like the little brother they never had. Tony has a look of clarity come over his face. He tries to push it away while Michelle asks how he is. She wants to help him and asks him if he needs someone to listen. He thanks her and tells her he will be fine. Michelle leaves. Tony gets a call from Carlos. He tells him that he has news about the hit and needs to talk to him.

My Comments:

Mon., April 2, 2001 – At the Bauers: Michelle comes in and Danny asks where she had been. He is nervous. She tells him that she went to Infierno to see Tony. Danny demanded to know what Tony said. Rick walks in interrupting their conversation. Rick is exhausted from working multiple shifts and seems like he is falling asleep on his feet. Michelle commiserates with him and sends him up to bed. Once Rick heads upstairs, Danny again insists on knowing  about Tony. She told him that Tony didn’t say much but that she did most of the talking. She tells Danny what she told Tony and that he was stressed out. She asks Danny what May and her boss said at the meeting and calls him out on not telling her before. Danny tells her that there is a contract out on him and Carlos, Tony and Abuela are the ones behind it. Michelle can’t believe that even with all she’s done that Abuela would actually take Danny’s life. Danny tells her about finding out Ray knew as well, but couldn’t tell him because Tony told him in confession. Danny doesn’t understand why Abuela would do this. He has always been taught blood is blood. Danny: “You know I was always told the Family first. La Famalia es sagrada. What a lie!”  Danny wants to call Abuela, he doesn’t believe she can do go through with it if she has to look in his face. Tony shows up at the Bauer’s house and peeks in the window. He sees the two men in the woods with guns and then looks over to Danny and Michelle right inside the windows. He says something about the family being sacred and runs inside. He tries to get Danny out of the view of the hit men and tells Danny that someone is there to kill him. Danny tells him he knows and he is looking at that person. He grabs Tony and pushes him against the wall. Tony tells him that there are men in the woods with guns there to take him out. He tells him that he is there to warn him. He says they wanted him in on it but he couldn’t do it, he would never make Michelle a widow. Tony tells him that the men have high-powered rifles but he thinks they can get out. Danny lets Tony go and closes all the blinds and shuts off the lights. Tony tells him to leave with him now; he knows they can get away. Danny refuses to leave his wife and child. Tony tells him they won’t be hurt, Carlos said so. Danny doesn’t trust Carlos. Tony begs Danny to trust him then and get out. Just then Abuela comes in walking, without her wheelchair. Tony is confused and asks where her wheelchair is. Abuela tells him that the role of the old grandmother in the wheelchair served her well but she was in a hurry and had to do what she had to do. Danny tells her that he knows she wants him dead and wants her to say it to his face. She tells him the time for words is over and she pulls a gun on him.

Tues., April 3, 2001 – At the Bauers: Danny is still confronting Maria, who is holding him at gunpoint. He tells her she looks very much like his grandmother but she isn’t related to him. He tells her that he used to trust her but now she and her buddy Carlos have been trying to turn Tony against him. Maria tells him that she tries to reason with the other families but Danny wouldn’t listen and insisted that he was leaving so the hit was inevitable and out of her hands. She tells Danny he should trust her now. He tells her that at one time he would have done whatever she said but there is no way he is going to trust her now. Maria asks him if he wants things to end like this, wasting his life. She turns to Michelle and tells her that now that she is a mother and a wife she will appreciate the loss that much more. She tells Michelle that she has lost her sons and lost her grandson to her. Maria tells Michelle that she won and now she will feel true loss. Maria tells Danny to enjoy what little time he has left and she leaves. She looks over at the hitmen hiding in the bushes. Danny sends Michelle, Tony and Robert to the basement telling them that he will stay in the kitchen with Tony’s gun. Before they can leave the hitmen break in and a shot rings out. Danny yells out for Tony from behind the cabinets. One of the hitmen was hit. Danny runs out and grabs Tony and they try to get out. Then Danny is shot and Michelle runs to help him. She gets him on the couch just as Rick comes down. Rick tries to help him and asks Tony to call 911 but Danny tells him not to. Tony tells him the guys are still out there and they have to get Danny away. Rick puts Danny’s jacket on and starts to head out to buy them a little time. Rick tells Tony to go with him and that they should run for the car. Rick: “Tony, you’ve got to find a way to get us to the car. That’s the plan.” Rick: “What’s the plan?” Tony:“We run like hell.” Rick: “We run like hell, that’s got technical merit.” They run out and there are a lot of shots fired. Inside, Danny tells Michelle to get away from the window. Rick and Tony make it to the car but the hitmen are following them.

My Comments:

Tues., April 3, 2001 – This clip doesn’t have anything Manny, but if you are going to watch the full episode below, this helps set up the Rassie stuff.

Wed., April 4, 2001 – At the Bauers: Danny is starting to lose his comprehension of what’s going on as blood loss and fever kick in. Michelle recaps telling Danny the bullet went straight through him and assures him that he will be okay. She tells him that Tony and Rick left to get the bad guys to follow them and that she and the baby are fine. She is applying pressure to the bleeding but wants to call an ambulance. He tells her they can’t call anyone, the cops will screw it all up. She promises not to call them but apparently one of the neighbors heard the shots and called it in did because they hear a cop car siren outside. Michelle tells him they have to get him upstairs right away so they won’t see him. She helps him out of the chair and up the steps to their room.
Outside, Harley and Frank are looking around. Someone called with reports of gunfire. They find the one hit man in the bushes dead. Frank goes to the door of the house. Michelle is inside cleaning up and covering the blood on the chair with a quilt. Frank and Harley come in and ask what is going on. She tells them that the hit man came and Danny ran. She doesn’t know where he is. They aren’t convinced and ask her to trust them. They tell her they can help her. Michelle tells them that Danny left with Tony in Rick’s car. She goes over what happened with Abuela and the hit men coming in. They tell her that the guy outside has a broken neck. Harley goes to put out an APB on Danny and Tony so they can find them and protect them. Harley and Frank talk about the situation. Michelle says she wants to check on the baby. Frank tells her to get some sleep if she can. Michelle goes into her room and tries to get Danny to wake up. She is worried about his blood loss and tries to check his wound again. Michelle calls Claire and asks her to help her. She tells her that it is Danny and she wouldn’t have called if it weren’t an emergency. She asks Claire if she can trust her and begs her to help her. Claire tells her she doesn’t have a great track record with trust but she will do anything for her. Michelle thanks her for being honest and tells her that Danny has been shot. She tells her not to let on to Alan what is going on and there are also cops downstairs she will have to dodge but she needs her to help them. Claire tells her she can handle it and will be over there as soon as she can. Claire comes in with a gym bag. She tells the cops she was driving by and saw the cars. She wants to see Michelle and the baby. They tell her to leave but she doesn’t. She barges in and Michelle asks what she is doing there. She yells at Michelle asking why the mob was in the same house as her grandson and then demands she see him right away. Michelle takes her up telling Harley and Frank that is the only way to get rid of her. Harley tells Frank she is going to go up and help Michelle with Claire. Michelle thanks Claire for everything while Claire looks at Danny. She tells Michelle that he is lucky, nothing major was hit. She tells her that he has to have antibiotics and fluids as well as a transfusion. The bullet had bounced off a lower rib, but bullets leave dirty wounds and need to be cleaned. Michelle tells her to take her blood because she and Danny were a almost perfect match when the cross-typed them at the hospital, both are O+ with near matching antigens. Michelle: “You said we were almost a perfect match.” Claire: “So you always told me.” Danny had banked blood for her when she had had her miscarriage. Claire says she could get in so much trouble for this and Michelle says she won’t say anything. She tells her to roll up her sleeve and lay down beside him. Claire: “I won’t lie to you, Michelle, we’re racing death.” Michelle: “We’ve beat death before, honey, haven’t we?” In the Car: Rick and Tony have pulled over. They are outside the bus depot. Tony tells him to go get a bus ticket and maybe the bad guys will think he is Danny and leaving town. Rick agrees. He goes inside the bus depot and acts like a crazy guy. He is over exaggerating his mob lingo and accent being very loud. He buys a ticket to Chicago and is very rude to the guy. Then he goes to grab a paper and beats up the paper machine until he gets a paper out. Everyone is staring out him like he has some disease. Later, Rick goes back out to the car and tells Tony that he made sure the guy would remember him and he is going to make sure he also sees him get on the bus and then Danny should be okay. Tony asks him where he should ditch his car. Rick tells him not to worry about it just to help himself. He thanks Tony and tells him how great he was getting them out of the house. He is glad Tony was on the right side and tells him he trusts him. Rick gets out and Tony tries to fight off his lethargy. He rubs his shoulder and is shocked when he pulls his hands out to find it covered in blood. He presses a towel against the wound and when he looks again the towel was drenched in blood. Tony turns on the radio and hears that the police are looking for the car he is in as well as he and Danny. The police describe Rick’s car as a silver four door sedan with license plate G33 AB7.  He decides he has to get out of the car and starts walking.

Elsewhere in Springfield, Edmund and Richard are continuing their power struggle. San Cristobel has been doing its best to imitate turn of the century Revolutionary Russia falling victim to a series of revolutions, usually changing things for the worse. When Richard found out he was actually illegitimate (the true heir died and his father substituted Richard, the product of an affair, in the legitimate heir’s place), he feared what Edmund would do as ruler so he tried to turn San Cristobel into a democracy and ran for its Presidency. Edmund has sprung a coup d’é·tat and is currently in control of the government and the palace. Edmund has ordered Dax to arrest Richard and Cassie. Edmund announces he’s going to keep Richard in the palace prison and that he’s shipping Cassie back to America. Phillip shows up to help rescue Richard and Cassie. Edmund and Beth try on the crown jewels.  Josh and Reva are divorced. Josh is married to Olivia and not living in the family home. Reva is engaged to Noah of the great named, but poorly done Nova coupling. Reva has been temporarily blinded and Marah is trying to understand what she’s going through. Marah said she’s graduating high school in 6 weeks. Marah and Josh have a really great father-daughter talk, their first real one in a long time.

Thurs., April 5, 2001 – At the Bauer House: Claire and Michelle have just finished with the transfusion and Michelle is weak. Claire still wants Danny to go to the hospital; she is scared he may die otherwise. Michelle is panicking, begging her not to make him go. She tells her that if he goes to the hospital he will die anyway. Michelle thinks Danny is weaker and Claire checks him BP. It is lower and she is worried, telling Michelle there must be a bleeder she didn’t see. Michelle begs her to help him and Claire tells her she isn’t sure she will be able to see the bleeder. Michelle goes and gets Meta’s magnifying glass and a lamp. Claire doesn’t want to operate; she thinks it may kill him. Michelle begs her telling her that she trusts her and would like her to do the same; she knows Danny will die if he goes to the hospital. Claire reluctantly agrees and tells Michelle to get her gloves on and help her. Michelle is finishing up with the operation, having clamped off the bleeder, when Harley knocks on the bedroom door. Claire tells Michelle she has it under control and Michelle goes out to see Harley. They head downstairs. Frank tells Harley that there is blood on the kitchen floor and asks her if she knows where it came from. Michelle cries and tells him that Danny or Tony must have been shot. She is worried that one of them may be bleeding to death. Harley and Frank tell her they will find them. Harley sees blood on Michelle as well but she stays with her story that she doesn’t know where it came from. Harley believes Michelle knows more than she is saying. Just then there is a noise upstairs. Frank wants to go investigate but Michelle stops him. She tells him it is probably Claire. David comes in and starts questioning Michelle as well upsetting her more. Meta walks in and asks what is going on. The cops tell her what they know and by the time they get it out Claire comes down. Michelle asks Claire how he is and she tells her that her “little guy” is just fine. Meta goes over to Michelle to see what really happened but is interrupted by David who is still pressing Michelle. Michelle starts yelling, telling the cops to get out and find her husband. She tells them she is upset and worried and they should be out looking instead of there doing nothing. David starts in again and she tells him that he is there because he doesn’t care if Danny dies, since he is a Santos. He tells her that isn’t true and tells her that he is worried about her and her baby. She tells him she would never put her baby in danger and tells him to get out. Frank and Harley are shocked by her anger and how upset she is. Harley tells David to go on back to the station. She is sure he won’t get any more info out of Michelle, even if she knows something. Frank and Harley ask how she is and they head out as well. After they are gone, Meta asks Michelle where Danny is. She figures it out that he is in the house. Michelle tells her that he was shot and Claire saved him. Meta is shocked. She tells Michelle to go hold her husband’s hand and rest. Michelle leaves. Meta offers Claire some coffee but she declines and tells her that she needs to check on Danny again. Meta thanks her for helping them. Claire leaves. Michelle is with Danny holding onto him when he wakes up. He tells her how bad he feels, like he was run over with a lawn mower. Michelle tells him what she and Claire had to do and that Claire saved him. He can’t believe it either. Claire comes in to check on him again. She checks his vitals and thinks things are going well. Danny tells her it must have been tempting for her to see him like that. He wonders if she wouldn’t have rather just let him die. Claire tells him that her daughter loves him and that’s all that matters to her. She tells him that she is glad he is okay and she leaves. Michelle makes Danny promise he will never to leave her.

At the Lewis House: Marah is thinking of Tony and marking out where she wrote his name on her notebooks. She tells herself that she has to get over him. Sam comes over and tells her he was out on the beach with his telescope and saw her light on so he stopped by. She tells him she was working on some homework. He gets her to admit she was thinking about Tony and that she wants to move on. She thanks him for being her friend and not taking advantage of her vulnerability. He tells her that he would never do that to her. He tells her that maybe she should take all her mementos and build a pyre. He tells her she would have to do it in a special place though. Marah thanks him and he heads out.

At the Lighthouse Marah has a lot of the things that remind her of Tony as well as her St. Anthony’s medal. She places them on the floor at the lighthouse. She thanks Tony for everything, all the good and all the bad. She tells him she loves him but she has to leave him there. She says goodbye and starts to stand just as Tony stumbles in. He collapses on the floor.

Fri., April 6, 2001 – At the Bauer House: Danny and Michelle both are waking up. He asks her why it is so quiet. She tells him that Meta has the baby and they are both asleep and Rick is still not back yet. He says he is hungry and she starts to go fix them something but he is scared it still may not be safe. She tells him the cops still have a car outside and she is sure it will be okay. Danny asks her if Tony had called. She tells him she hadn’t heard from him or Rick. Danny seems worried about them. The phone rings and Michelle goes to answer. She is happy to hear from Rick. He tells her that everything worked like they had planned. He tells her that he left Tony at the bus depot but he is sure he got away. Michelle tells everything to Danny and she thinks they are in the clear. He tells her that it is far from over. He tells her that he has an idea but he has to think it out a little more. He tries to get out of bed but she stops him. He tells her that he needs a pen and paper to work things out. She asks him about the plan but he doesn’t want to tell her just yet. He is worried about her safety and that of their baby. He is sure that Carlos and Maria won’t just give up.

At the Lighthouse Marah goes over to where Tony collapsed and tries to get him to stir. She pulls her hand back and notices the blood and freaks out. She starts going over the first aide she had learned and remembers to apply pressure to the wound. Tony starts coming to and asks her what she was doing there. He thought she was an angel. She smiles at him and asks him who did this to him. Tony tells Marah everything about the hit and what his grandmother had promised him but that he couldn’t do it to Danny in the end. Marah swears not to tell anyone and tells Tony that the respect he was seeking he should have because what he did was to protect the ones he loves. He doesn’t get it. She tells him that he loves Danny and he saved him and now she realizes that he broke things off with her because he loved her and wanted to keep her safe. Tony tells her that they have to leave the lighthouse soon, he is sure the hitmen will think of it eventually. He tells her to leave now so she won’t be caught with him. She tells him that he isn’t a mobster and she is going to take him home with her and help him. He tells her that he can’t let her do that; it will put him between her and her family. Marah tells him she is taking him home and helps him get up.

At the Lewis House Marah comes in and sneaks Tony into the house. She hears Shayne in the kitchen and gets Tony to a corner to sit him down until she can misdirect Shayne’s attention. She goes to her brother, who has his arms full of junk food. She tells him that she hid a piece of carrot cake in the fridge that he can have if he wants it. He is suspicious of her but doesn’t want to risk losing the cake so he goes to get it. As soon as Shayne was out of the room, Marah runs to Tony and helps him up to her bedroom. She gets him comfortable on the bed and starts tending to his wound. Tony doesn’t want to stay. He is scared he will get her in more trouble. He thinks he should go find out how Danny is. Marah tells him they will find out in the morning because he isn’t leaving, he is going to get some rest. She patches him up and wipes him with a damp towel and cuddles up beside him. He tells her that wasn’t exactly how he wanted their first night together to be but he does like it there. She tells him she likes him being there to. He isn’t sure he can get to sleep so Marah starts singing him a lullaby. Tony is just starting to snooze when Marah hears something break downstairs. Someone had broken the glass out of the door trying to get in.

My Comments:

Monday April 9, 2001 – At the Lewis House Marah hears the window break and knows someone is in the house. She goes to peer downstairs and hears more movement. She goes back in and tries to wake Tony. Apparently, all the pain medication she gave him has totally knocked him out. She hears her mom calling out for her and going down the steps and starts to worry about her. She goes down quietly vowing to protect Tony. Meanwhile, Reva thinks Marah or Shayne made the noise and she is calling out for them. She goes by the door and feels the wind coming in the broken glass and realizes that someone had broken in the house. She walks around calling out to the stranger, asking what they want. The guy pounces on Reva and demands to know where “the kid” is. Reva thinks he wants Marah or Shayne and she refuses to tell him anything. She struggles with him and gets her hands on the gun but the guy soon after gets it back. She tries to hit him with Shayne’s Lacrosse stick but that also doesn’t work. As soon as the guy backs up into the foyer, Marah comes out with an iron skillet and slams it over his head, knocking him out cold. Reva hugs Marah and tells her how worried she was. Marah tells her that she called the police and they are on their way. Reva asks her to get some rope and help her tie the bad guy up until they arrive. Marah does and they wrap his wrists and ankles. The police show up and ask them what happened. David is in charge and he doesn’t seem to like any of the answers that Marah was giving them. Harley and Frank come in. They tell Reva about the break in and shooting at the Bauer’s and that there was a dead body there that they presume is the partner of the man lying in their foyer. Harley asks Marah what the guy was doing there and she told them finally that they were after Tony. She tells them about finding Tony and how he was shot. She brought him home and doctored him. Reva is furious. Shayne has by come down and overhears that Tony is upstairs. He asks if he is dead. Marah tells them that he is asleep because she gave him some of her mom’s painkillers. Reva tells her that she is very angry with her. Marah yells that she had to do something to help him. David tells Marah that she is now implicated in a homicide.

Tuesday April 10, 2001 – At the Lewis House Reva tells Josh what happened the night before as the police come down with Tony and ask him what happened. He and Marah go on to tell them how they accidentally met up at the lighthouse and she helped him. Josh asks Marah why she didn’t just call 911 like any normal person. Marah tells him that she couldn’t lead anyone to Tony. Harley asks Tony about Danny and what happened at the Bauer’s. He tells her that he dropped Danny off at the bus depot and he left for Cincinnati. David yanks Tony around to talk to him and Marah tells David to back off. Harley tells Tony that there is a dead body at the Bauer’s and she wonders if he knows anything about it. He tells her that one of the hit men must have turned on their partner. They ask why he didn’t go to his grandmother or brother. Tony tells them he didn’t want to lead the killers to his family. Josh is ticked that Tony didn’t think of the Lewis family before he came into their home. Marah tells them that they happened upon each other and she made Tony come with her so she could help him. David is being a jerk again and grabs Tony telling him to fess up and tell them who the shooters were. Tony told him he had never seen them. David asked him who hired them but Tony wouldn’t say. David tells him he was going down to the station to finish answering questions then. Tony tells them he wants to go make sure Michelle and his Godson are all right first and they agree to take him by. He tells Marah he will see her later but Josh yells out to him that he will not be seeing Marah.

That leaves just the family and Josh is fuming. Shane leaves to go upstairs and Marah calls him a coward. Josh says he wants to talk first. He lays into Marah about the situation and she tells him that she knows his point of view and she understands. He tells her that trouble follows Tony and he doesn’t know how to make her understand. She tells him that she does understand and explains why she went to the lighthouse in the first place. She said she went to the lighthouse to say goodbye and Tony showed up. Then she brought Tony there and, just as her dad said, trouble followed him. She understands but she loves Tony and she refuses to stop seeing him. He tells her that she had been hurt because he broke it off with her but now she knows he was just doing it to keep her safe and she loves him. Josh starts to protest again but Marah asks him what he wanted her to do, leave him at the lighthouse to die. She tells him there is nothing more to say. She knows they might not be able to respect him for keeping her and his family safe but she can. She leaves. Josh yells after her asking her where she is going. She tells him he doesn’t want to know and slams the door behind her. Reva calls after Josh. She tells him that Marah has a point. Reva tells Josh that they need to cut Marah some slack with Tony. She will be 18 soon and will be able to do whatever she wants. If they keep after her, she may leave them to live with Tony and they would never get to see her again. She doesn’t want her daughter leaving the house. Reva goes on to tell Josh that Marah did what she thought was right and she understands it all.

Noah has a fight with Josh. Although Noah normally is pretty stupid, for instance he thinks he actually has a shot at making Reva forget about Josh (and why would anybody bother to try anymore?), he makes some great points here about what Reva and Josh are doing wrong. Josh should try something else in dealing with Tony and has Noah says there is no way a girl who has inherited pig-headed stubbornness from both Josh AND Reva is going to listen to reason.

At the Bauers: Tony comes in with the cops and Michelle asks Tony where Danny is. He tells her that he put him on a bus to Cincinnati. She is glad he got away. May and Gus show up and the local cops are stunned. Gus starts talking to Michelle and Frank, Harley and David keep asking who they are and finally everyone shows their badges. Harley calls to check them out and tells everyone that they are real. Frank is ticked off and asks Michelle how long she has known. She tells him that she has known for a few weeks. Tony yells at Mary and tells her that she set Danny up. She tells him they were only trying to help Danny. Frank is ticked that they didn’t let the locals in on it. Gus tells them that they told the commissioner and that was the only person they thought needed to know. Gus goes on to tell the locals that they are relieved of their duties of this case. All mob activity is now under Federal jurisdiction. The locals are mad. They tell him that this is their case. Gus tells them it is his case and they can report to him. Michelle keeps eyeing the stairs and tells them she wants to go check on the baby. Gus tells her to stay there. He makes Tony get up and starts questioning him. Tony tells him he wants a lawyer. Gus tells him that he will need one because he is under arrest. He charges him with racketeering, firearm charges and conspiracy to commit murder. Michelle tells them that Tony protected Danny. Gus asks if that is Tony’s story and Tony tells him it is the only story. Gus handcuffs Tony and Tony cries out from the pain. Frank comes over and tells them that Tony needs a doctor and he will go to the hospital before anything else. Gus says he will take him to the hospital. Frank and Harley said they would follow him to make sure he is okay. Michelle tells Tony that she will get Ross to meet him at Cedars. Marah walks in and asks them what is going on. Tony tells her he has been arrested by the feds.

Another version from a Gush channel, mostly repeat but I think a little clearer then some GusH scenes between 10th and the 16th:

My Comments:

Wed., April 11, 2001 – At some point, I”m not sure if it before or after  the exchanges with Ross and Marah below, but Josh shows up and threatens Tony in an effort to break up Marony from the other sides. Josh singularly fails to note the similarities between Tony and himself when he was younger (which are substantial) and insists that Tony will be only hurt Marah because he’s taken her away from kid things, like being excited about her prom dress (which she wasn’t because of the hamfisted way Josh foisted his relationship with Olivia on his kids, but he doesn’t mention that or seem to remember that prom was almost 6 months ago). Back in Tony’s hospital room, Ross tells Marah that Gus was just trying to upset her to get more information. He is on a fishing expedition and can’t touch her because of the Good Samaritan laws. He tells her not to worry about it. He goes to make some calls and leaves Marah and Tony alone. Marah asks Tony how he feels. He tells her he is upset that Gus was leaning on her. She says she stood up to him and called him a bully. Tony laughs. She tells him that he was calling her ‘the girlfriend’. Tony asks what she would call him but she just grins and doesn’t say anything. He tells her she knows she is crazy for him, head over heels. She smiles and doesn’t deny it. He tells her to come closer. She does and he leans up and kisses her.

At the Bauers: Michelle is on the phone with Ross asking for help for Tony. She tells him all she could without letting him know that Danny was still at the house. She tells him that Tony is at the hospital but under arrest with the FBI. Ross asks more about the feds and Michelle tells him about May. Ross is surprised that May is anything but the flaky cigarette girl she pretended to be. Michelle asks Ross if he thinks she will be able to bail Tony out of jail. He tells her when the feds are involved there is no telling but he will do his best. Michelle hangs up and goes back to her conversation with Marah. Marah wonders why everyone thinks the worst of Tony but Michelle says Ross will help. Marah thanks Michelle and leaves to go to the hospital to see Tony. Danny comes downstairs to sit. Michelle doesn’t think he should be out of bed but he is going stir crazy. She tells him what had happened about Tony and the Lewis House and the feds. He is upset but she tells him she already has Ross over there with Tony. Danny thanked her and kisses her. He asks her to sit with him and they talk about their future. He says that Michelle’s family seems to be coming around to him, they all pitched in and helped him out and Tony and Ray are on their side as well. Michelle kisses him. Danny says it would be funny if he was run over by a bus or killed by mad cow disease now after all of this. Michelle says they had enough bad luck for both of their lifetimes and they should live happily ever after. She kisses him again. The cop that is stationed outside the Bauer house comes to the door and knocks. He tells Michelle that a woman is there who claims to be a relative. Michelle sees it is Maria. Maria tells Michelle that she really needs to talk to her on a matter of life and death. Michelle tells the police officer it is okay and lets Maria in the house. Maria tells Michelle that having the cop’s there makes her safe for now. Maria tells Michelle that David Grant came to see her. Michelle tells her that she knew he would. She asks Michelle what she told the cops and Michelle tells her that they know everything, the truth. Maria wonders how Danny is and tries to act like she was trying to save his life. Michelle says Tony, Rick and Claire saved Danny from her. Maria says Danny should have listened to her and none of this would have happened. Michelle says Maria is an old evil woman who never loved Danny. Maria tells her that she will destroy Danny. Danny comes out and defends Michelle. He tells her that he is there in front of her; she should take her best shot. Maria sees Danny and he tells her he knows the whole story. Danny tells her the FBI knows everything and May has been taping him for months. Maria gets frightened and asks for Danny’s loyalty but Danny reminds her how she was loyal to him. He tells her to call Carlos and ask him to come over there now but not to tell him why. Maria goes to make the call while Michelle asks Danny if he is sure. He tells her he is. Carlos arrives and acts like he has no idea why the cops are outside. Maria tells him that Michelle knows everything and so does Danny. Carlos is confused until Danny walks out of the kitchen. He is surprised. Danny tells Carlos that the FBI is moving in and they will take him first but the one they really want is Carlos. Danny assures him that he will be a firewall for all the other families but only in return for his family’s safety and his own safety whether he is in prison or out. He tells Carlos if anything happens to him or his family they are cooked. He goes on to tell them how he wrote duplicate letters with enough information in them to put every member of every family away for the rest of their lives. If something happens to any of his family they will be sent to the FBI. He tells them that on top of that the FBI has tape recordings of Maria and Carlos plotting the hit on him. He suggest they both leave town. Maria and Carlos agree. They start to leave. Maria stops and asks if she can have a photo of her great grandson to take with her. Michelle goes and grabs one. She hands it to Maria and tells her she is thankful her son will never know her. Maria leaves. Danny holds Michelle and tells her they won.

My Comments:

Thurs., April 12, 2001 – At the Bauer House: Michelle is changing Danny’s bandage and he is acting like a big baby because the tape hurts him. Michelle asks him how he can stand up to all these mobsters who tried to kill him and yet gets upset over a little pull from a bandage. He laughs. He tells her that he has been worried about one thing. Their insurance policy, (the letters), are still upstairs, they have to get them out of there and to a third party right away. Michelle asks him if he thinks Maria will really leave town. Danny thinks she believed him about the tape and he has no doubt she will be on the first place to Havana, ASAP. Michelle thinks they are safe now from the mob families but she is still worried about the feds. He tells her he doesn’t know yet. She tells him they need to call Mary and Gus and have a meeting so they can decide what to do next. Danny isn’t sure. He tells Michelle that he made a deal with the families not to say anything and he can’t testify against them. Michelle tells him that he did that in order to save their family. Danny tells her if they were to go along with the feds, the other families would find them and take them out before they could do anything. Michelle tells him that she can’t lose him to the mob or to prison. Michelle tells him they should call and set up a meeting just to hear what the feds have to say. They call Gus. Gus and Mary show up. Danny asks about Tony and they tell him he will be fine but he is in a heap of trouble. Gus tries to get Danny to say more but Danny tells him they will have to talk to Tony about that. They tell Danny that they need information from him about the other families. Danny tells him that the reason he called them was to tell them to their faces that he is not giving them anything. Gus is not happy with this revelation and tells Danny he is stupid. He tells him that they were willing to protect him but now all he is going to get is jail time. Danny tells him that he has to protect his wife and child and if he testifies they will all surely be dead. Gus again offers his protection. Danny tells him that he doesn’t trust his protection, he only trusts himself. May tries to talk some sense to Michelle but Michelle stands by Danny. Gus starts to walk away and sees the pictures of the baby. He tells Danny he wants to tell him what is going to happen to him next. He tells Danny he has to spend as much time as he can with his baby in the next few days because he won’t be able too much longer. He tells Michelle she needs to talk to her husband before he is put in prison. Danny tells them to get out. Gus and Mary leave. Danny tells Michelle he knew that would happen and now the feds won’t leave them alone. He just hopes they can stall them a little bit. Michelle is upset. She tells him she has come to far to have him leave her this way. She knows there has to be another way.

Fri., April 13, 2001 – At the Bauers: Ross arrives and is surprised to see Danny. Ross wants to know if the police know Danny is here. Danny says he just finished talking to the FBI and asks about Tony. Ross says he is fine and he is trying to help him although he is a handful but he confesses that he likes Tony. Michelle asks if Ross would like another client. Ross looks concerned. Danny tells him he is looking at a RICO prosecution and Michelle asks for Ross’s help. Michelle leaves them alone to talk and Danny fills Ross in about all the possible evidence against him. Ross asks if the weekly meetings were about him getting out. Danny said they were for the most part. Ross thinks the FBI must have more evidence than they are telling. He wonders why they are targeting him but Danny says maybe because they know he wants to get out. Michelle comes back in and asks Ross what he thinks. Ross is upset that the FBI is pressuring Danny. He thinks they are either pressuring him for information or they have something they aren’t telling. Someone must be targeting Danny specifically. Michelle asks if they can fight this in court. Ross says that Danny and Tony may be in serious trouble but he will do his best. Ross starts to leave and Danny gives Ross the letters he wrote. He tells Ross that if anything happens to him or his family he should send one copy to the feds and the other copy to the Springfield PD. He tells him that they will also have copies put in their safe deposit boxes. Ross agrees and tells them he will put them in his office safe. Michelle thanks Ross for his help. Ross tells her that he isn’t a miracle worker and they should be prepared if the worst happens. Ross leaves. Michelle grabs her purse and keys and tells Danny where the baby formula is. She tells him that Ross said they needed a miracle so she is going to go find one.

My Comments:

Mon., April 16, 2001 – At the Springfield PD: The FBI has taken an office in the police station. May is on the phone with Gus while she is unpacks boxes of evidence. She tells him she will take it to the evidence room and log it all in. There are videotapes and audiotapes lying with paperwork on her desk. Michelle stands outside the office and sees the evidence that says U.S. vs. Santos. May continues to talk on the phone about warrants for all their wiretaps. Michelle steps in and puts her hands on some of the evidence. She is thinking of what she should do. Michelle steps back out and May goes back over to the desk. She grabs all the evidence and puts it in a briefcase and closes the case. Michelle comes to the door again and knocks. May sees her and puts the briefcase beside the desk and goes on to ask Michelle what she is doing there. Michelle tells her she wants a meeting with her. May asks what she can do for her. Michelle says she wants May to help Danny; she thinks she owes it to him. Michelle tells her she isn’t leaving until Danny gets a break one way or the other. May says she doesn’t owe Danny anything. Michelle says she knows what Danny is really like, he let her in. May says she did what she had to do. Michelle says May slept with her husband and she wonders why May can’t look her in the eye now if it was all just business. May knows Danny was trying to get out and went along with the other families just enough to protect her and the baby. May again offers them witness protection. Michelle says they can’t turn their backs on Rick and the rest of their family. Michelle says they are going to trial and tells May that Ross is shocked they are even bringing a case. May says there is enough evidence to convict. Michelle says Danny was trying to shut down a crime family and wonders why they are prosecuting him. They are using him to get to the other families. Michelle wants May to help him. May says only Danny can help himself. May tells Michelle this isn’t easy for her. She can’t help Danny and she can’t risk ruining her career. She thinks Michelle can talk Danny into cooperating with the Feds. Gus arrives and asks Michelle what she is doing there Michelle tells Gus they are having a meeting. Gus says that is fine if she is offering info. Michelle tells him he has no case. Gus tells Michelle to leave if she is not interested in cooperating. Michelle says she isn’t done with what she has to say. Gus wants her to leave. He gets a phone call and has to take it. He turns his back and then has to ask May for her help finding something. Michelle tells them she will leave then. When she sees that both have their back to her she grabs the briefcase and leaves the police station. After the call, Gus asks May why Michelle was there. May tells him she was trying to play her. She says Gus can’t relate because he will never be used in a case as a piece of meat. He reminds her that she volunteered for the job. She goes on to tell him that Michelle was trying to relate to her as a woman. She tells him that Michelle said they are taking this to trial. Gus is upset; he thinks her lawyer knows how thin their evidence is. May tells him she got everything she could. He tells her that he doesn’t want to be reminded of the rotten job she did. She tells him she got all there was, she wasn’t going to manufacture evidence. He wished she did. He wants to look at everything again and asks her where it is. She tells him everything is in the evidence kit. She goes to get it and finds it is gone. Gus is upset. He runs out of the office with May. Gus gets on the phone relay Michelle’s description and the type of car she is driving. They want the police to help track her down. At the Bauer House: Rick comes in and sees Danny playing with Robert. Rick tells Danny he needs to go to the hospital and get his wound checked. Danny hands him the baby. Rick tells Robbie about his adventure at the bus station. Danny thanks Rick for risking his life for him. Rick says he did it for the three of them and actually had fun. He tells Danny he checked on Tony and he is doing fine. Danny says he will wind up in a cell. Ross is doing his best but is using the word miracle. Danny says the feds are coming after him hard. The other families should leave them alone but the feds won’t. Rick asks where Michelle is and Danny says she left to find a miracle. Rick thinks she is scheming. Danny wonders what she can really do. He tells Rick he is kind of worried about Michelle and wants to go look for her. He heads for the door just as the bell rings. Rick looks out and sees the feds. Gus and May come in and tells them they are looking for Michelle. May says Michelle came to see her and then left. She and Gus want to talk to her and tell them they aren’t leaving until they do. Danny tells them they aren’t waiting for her there. Gus tells him they will. Rick tells them he owns this house and they will leave or he will call the police. Gus tells them they will wait outside. Rick asks Danny if Michelle did something. Danny isn’t sure but says if it got the feds that mad, he is sure he will like it. At Laurel Falls: Michelle has a bonfire going and is humming and singing, “Home on the Range.” She smiles each time she tosses a piece of evidence into the flames.

Tues., April 17, 2001 – At the Bauer House: Michelle comes home and Rick and Danny asks her where she was. She tells them she went to see May and then came home. She doesn’t want to tell them anything else. They want to know what she has done to tick off the feds so much. She tells them she isn’t going to say anything so they will have plausible deniability. Michelle: “If you don’t know, you’re not involved.” Danny: “If you don’t tell me, how can I protect you?” Michelle: “You don’t HAVE to protect me. THIS time I’m going to protect you.” Just then May and Gus ring the doorbell. She opens the door and they barge in and start accusing Michelle of taking something that belongs to them. They tell her they want it back. Michelle plays dumb and asks them what they are accusing her of. May says she has one chance to make things right. Gus tells her that he will do her a favor and try to get her an adjoining cell to her husband. Michelle asks Gus what she is accused of doing. He says theft, obstruction of justice, destruction of evidence and conspiracy to racketeering. May tells her that this is going to hurt them more as well as mean the end of her career. Michelle tells Danny they are charging her with more than they have against him. Gus tells Michelle he is confused at who is the innocent party in this. Michelle says his anger is misplaced and again asks what she did. She says all she did was go over to talk to Mary and when Gus asked her to leave, she did. Gus asks Michelle where she went when she left the office. Michelle says she went for a walk. Danny and Rick open the door and tell them to get out. Gus leaves. May turns to Michelle and tells her that she made the mistake of turning her back on her but she will never do that again. The feds leave. Rick turns to Michelle and asks her what she did. She tells him she doesn’t know but she assumes by what the feds were saying that something must have been missing. Danny tells her to try to guess. Michelle tells him it seems to her that someone must have taken all there evidence, video, audio, and field files. Danny and Rick can’t believe it. Michelle tells them if the evidence is gone so is the case against Danny and Tony. Danny asks her what she did. Michelle says she just prayed for a miracle and got one. Rick goes to the phone and calls Ross. He tells Michelle that the trouble may be over for Danny but is just beginning for her. Rick is pacing the room. He is sure Gus won’t give up. Danny tells Michelle that the other problem is, if the case is gone against him and Tony the case is also gone against the other families. Michelle tells him she knows that. He tells her that they may come back now. Michelle says no one has to know the case is gone and she is betting Maria is having a great time in Cuba. Ross comes in and Michelle tells him she needs him this time. He tells them it is time to discuss his group rate. Michelle asks to speak to him alone. Michelle says she thinks the FBI lost their case against Danny and Tony. She tells him about their visit and says she thinks the evidence went up in smoke. She has a strong feeling, almost as if she saw it happen. Ross tells her she is scaring him. Ross gets call from Tony at the hospital. Tony tells him that Gus is there. Ross asks to speak to him and asks Gus to meet him at Company. He leaves. Michelle sits on Danny’s lap and tells him not to worry, they are sure Ross will figure things out. Danny: “I swear it’s always the quiet ones.” Michelle: “What do you mean?” Danny: “You. What did Aitoro call you? An innocent, preppie wife of a crime lord.” Michelle: “Do you agree with him?” Danny: “No, not at all. I mean you look innocent and beautiful and soft and pink, but underneath you’re like steel. I always knew you had that in you. It’s one of the reasons I fell in love with you. What do you say we get married?” Michelle: “We’ve done that four times.” Danny: “Ok, then how about bed.” Michelle: “I thought you’d never ask.”

Wed., April 18, 2001 – At the Bauer House: Ross comes in with Tony. Michelle and Danny are glad he is there and ask if he got bail. Ross tells them that the charges have been dropped. Tony wants to file false arrest charges but Ross tells him it is best to let it go. Tony tells them he doesn’t understand what happened to get the case dropped so fast. Danny tells him the evidence must have disappeared. Tony is just glad the case is over. Ross tells them all that he doesn’t thinks Gus will give up that easy. Ross says Gus isn’t a nice guy; he met with him last night after Gus showed up in Tony’s hospital room. Ross seems to think that Gus is out to get Danny. Danny wonders why he would target him now that he is out of the life. Ross asks Danny if Gus digs long enough will he find anything on him. Danny tells him he is clean. Ross is glad to hear it. Ross turns to Tony and tells him to keep his nose clean. Ross leaves.

Harley gets assigned to work with Gus. They have a run in. Harley tries to get out of working with Gus by going over his head. It doesn’t work.

My Comments:

Thurs., April 19, 2001 – At Harley’s: Rick comes in. Harley has a cold or allergies she doesn’t know which as well as a bad rash. Rick wants her to have it looked at and asks Harley if she would like to order a pizza. She likes the idea and they go into the den to talk. Rick tells her he heard about her working with the feds and he wants to know if that will cause problems with their relationship. Harley tells him she will make sure it isn’t a problem; she doesn’t want to lose their friendship on top of everything else she has lost. Rick asks Harley if she is teaming up with the feds to nail his little sister. Rick tells her he is kind of glad she is working with Gus now because he knows she will be fair. She tells him she won’t have that much influence on the case but suggests Michelle and Danny keep their noses clean. There is a knock at the door, Gus. He barges in with a few bags. Harley tells him she has company. He tells her that is okay; he wanted to talk to Rick anyway. He goes on in and makes himself comfy. Gus goes on to ask questions about Michelle. Rick at first refuses to answer them. Gus tells him that he knows all about his and his sisters past run-ins with the law. He tells Rick if he knows anything about what Michelle did at their office the other day he is an accessory after the fact. Rick says he knows nothing. Gus wants him to explain his sister’s relationship with the Santos family. He understands the beginning but wonders why when Michelle became a part of the problem. Rick starts to defend Michelle and her actions but Harley stops him. Rick says he is tired and leaves. Harley is upset that her friend left and Gus stayed. She tells Gus that he ran her friend off; Gus says Rick left on his own. He opens one of the bags will all kinds of take out. Harley is staring at him and he tells her that he was assuming she wouldn’t have him something to eat so he brought his own. She tells him she is off duty and has kids to take care of. He tells her to go ahead, he will be fine. They argue and he starts what she knows about the Santos. He tells her that May thinks they have two sets of books to Infierno. Gus asks Harley if she had any idea where the other set would be kept. Harley tells him she didn’t know if they existed but if they did they were probably at the bottom of the lake. Gus asks her if they could be at the Bauer home. Harley tells him Danny would never put the Michelle or the Bauers in that position. Gus isn’t so sure. He wants to go over Danny’s assets but he doesn’t have many, most of everything is in Maria’s name. Harley talks but Gus doesn’t listen. She asks him why he doesn’t trust her. Gus tells her she has to earn his trust. She asks him to leave and hands him his stuff. Gus tells her they will get along fine as long as she learns to do things his way. He leaves.

My Comments:

Wed., April 25, 2001 – Michelle comes in and Gus tells her that they have found where she burned all the evidence and they think they have enough to prove that she did it. He tells her he would like to give her a deal but if she doesn’t start talking there will be no deal. He tells her if she doesn’t talk before the lab works comes back he will put her in federal prison and she will not see her baby until he is very old. Michelle tells him she is going to call her attorney and tells Gus he will rip him apart. He slams his fists onto his desk and starts yelling at her just as Ross comes in. Ross tells him that he has to stop badgering his client without thought to her constitutional rights. Ross tells the cops he wants to speak to Michelle and everyone else leaves. Ross sighs and tells Michelle he doesn’t want to know any details so Michelle should keep her mouth shut. Michelle tells him a little anyway and he tells her not to discuss it with anyone even Meta and Rick, for their own protection. Gus walks back in and Ross tells him that until he files charges against Michelle he will leave her alone and remember all of her rights. Ross tells Michelle they are leaving and they walk out. Frank asks Gus if he is going to give up now but Gus tells him a lawyer doesn’t get that angry unless he knows their client is guilty as sin so he is going full steam ahead. He is sure he will get them very soon.

Mon., April 30, 2001 – Philip tells Harley that he heard she was put on the Santos case. Harley hates it but Phillip tells her it will probably be better that Michelle and Danny have someone on their side instead of someone wanting to bury them. Harley tells him her new boss wants to bury them. Right on cue, Gus shows up and Phillip answers the door. Harley introduces the two and Phillip excuses himself after telling Gus to lighten up on Harley, she needs some rest. Phillip leaves. Gus tells Harley she may be tired because every time he comes over there is a different guy there. Harley is offended. She tells him that Phillip is her ex-husband and baby’s father.

Tues., May 1, 2001 – At Infierno: Michelle and Danny have the baby at the club. Ray and Catalina are playing with Robbie. Ray asks how things are on the fed front and Danny tells him Gus is still around but they are clean so they should be fine. Danny thinks Gus will give up and leave town eventually. Just then Gus walks in, (he has a ‘bug’ hidden in a book that he is planning on planting in the club.) Catalina seats Gus at a table and Danny comes over and tells him to get out. Gus tells Danny he was minding his own business and not bothering him and his family. Danny says he will press charges for harassment if he doesn’t back off. Gus gets up and says he will eat somewhere else. Gus leaves. Michelle tells Danny that Gus just wanted to get his goat. Danny says Gus won’t leave town until he gets something on him. Ray says there is nothing to get on him so they can relax. Harley tells Frank that Gus got a court order to bug the Bauer’s House and she has to plant it. Frank asks if she did it yet. She says she hasn’t had time. She asks his opinion on what he thinks will happen if Danny and Michelle find out. Frank tells him that she can’t tell them. Harley says she hates doing this especially now that Michelle and Danny are finally happy. Frank asks Harley if she wants Gus to think she doesn’t know how to draw the line between her job and friendship. Frank says if Danny is out of the business the bug will get him off the hook, otherwise he will get what he deserves. Harley tells Frank that if Michelle did burn the evidence the bug will incriminate her. Frank tells her Michelle would never do that and the bug will probably only pick up everyone talking baby talk to Robbie. Harley says she will do it but she feels like a traitor. Rick comes over and tells her she doesn’t look like a traitor. Harley feels busted but realizes soon thereafter that Rick didn’t overhear anything else. Rick tells her that Gus won’t find anything because there is nothing to find. Rick gets up for more coffee and Harley tells Frank that Gus won’t be satisfied even if Danny is a choirboy. Harley feels bad about having to plant a bug. Frank tries to reassure her and says they have both gotten attached to the Bauer’s house since they got divorced. Harley doesn’t want to get thrown off the barbecue guest list.

My Comments:

This argument is one of the truly important Manny discussions. They really face their problems and deal with the fall out in a way most soap couples never do.

May 2, 2001  – Harley is cleaning the living room in her and Phillip’s old house where she now lives alone with Zach. Harley bends over and her pants pop open. She comments on how she is not only divorced and stressed out but now she is getting fat as well. She goes over to get a safety pin to fix her pants when Gus knocks on the door. She opens the door and sees that Gus has broke off the doorknocker and as is his usual charming self, he barges in her home. Gus tells her that she is to plant the bug at the Bauers that morning. Harley tells him that she needs time; she can’t just go over there for no apparent reason and bug the house. She tells him that she does have a life and has a child to raise and she just can’t drop everything on his every whim. He tells her to place the bug in the back of the living room close to the kitchen so they can catch those conversations as well. Gus tells her they will have a a powerful directions mic pointed at Manny’s bedroom so they can catch what all goes on in there. Harley tells Gus she doesn’t think they will get much listening to Danny and Michelle’s pillow talk. Harley tells him that doing this is exploiting her friendship with the Bauers and she doesn’t like it one bit.

Harley goes over to the Bauer House and asks for Rick. Meta tells her he is at work but invites her for some tea and a chat since she’s the only one home and she’s babysitting Robbie. Harley agrees and looks around for a place to hide the bug. Meta goes to the kitchen to start the kettle while Harley goes over to the table and starts to put the bug into place under the dining room table (that they regularly forget is there). Meta comes back in, catching her bent over strangely, and asks her what she is doing. Harley acts like she was getting dizzy and just trying to regain her balance. Harley tells Meta how bad she has been feeling lately. Harley tells Meta that is why she is there to see Rick about it. Meta makes her promise to see Rick soon since he isn’t there right now.  Meta tells Harley what good friends she and Frank have been to the family. The kettle whistles and Meta leaves to turn it off. Harley pretends to stay behind to call the Harley secures the bug under the table. When Meta returns Harley tells her she has to get back to work. Meta makes her promise to get checked out as soon as she can concerning her dizzy spells.

Danny and Michelle get home and are talking about the baby. Meta tells them everything is fine and the baby is the sweetest baby she has ever seen. Michelle asks Danny how things are at the club. Danny is worried about paying the bills. Michelle tells him they will manage. Meta thought the club made a profit. He says that he used to subsidize the club from the casino but now that everything is on the up and up he can’t continue operating the casino since Gus is sniffing around. Danny asks Meta if the daughters of Springfield will have a bake sale for him. Michelle tells him she knows what they can do. She tells him that he should start really using the casino as a charity thing. He can book big charity functions for various organizations around town and that will bring people in to eat and drink. Danny questions if they could make money without the large slice of the take they always took in from the actual gambling. Michelle suggests charge a per head charge for such events. Danny says a cash bar will help and they could charge for meals and keep both. Meta tells them that she is organizing a charity function for the lighthouse but Claire wants to have it at the Country Club. Michelle tells her to forget that, they will have it at Infierno. They all agree that it is a good idea. Danny says he will want to work with Meta, not Claire. He hugs Meta for helping.

May 3, 2001 – Rick is talking to Robbie in the Bauer living room. He tells him how his dad is a good man and loves him so much. Rick tells him that Danny protected Robbie and his mom and did something that he should have never had to do. Danny comes in and is happy to see Rick with Robbie. Danny says he and Rick don’t really know each other. Rick says he knows Danny loves Michelle and the baby and that is all he needs to know. Rick tells him he loves Robbie as well and he will babysit his nephew anytime. Danny says he is going to go help Michelle dig around in the garden.

Outside, Michelle is potting plants and Danny bring her out a Popsicle. Michelle loves how domestic their little family has gotten. Danny tells Michelle about seeing Rick with Robbie and how he seems to accept him. He tells her that Rick seems sure that he will protect her and the baby, a little too sure. He wonders if Rick knows how Danny protected her and the baby from Carmen. He overheard something and wonders how Rick would know. Michelle admits to telling Rick and Meta about Carmen. Danny is upset tells Michelle she wasn’t supposed to share that secret with anyone. Michelle says Danny was gone and the secret was tearing her up. She was pregnant, stressed, and she had to tell someone, so she told Rick and Meta. Danny says she betrayed him. They go into the house and into the living room. She tells him that her family isn’t like his and they care and love Danny like he was one of their own. Danny tells her he doesn’t even like that she knows what happened to his mother, but he definitely doesn’t want anyone else to know.

Harley comes out of the OB/GYN and says “not again”. She sits with her head in her hands when Blake comes through the lobby. Blake asks Harley what she is doing in the hospital. Harley makes up a story. Blake asks Harley to come to Company with her so Blake can try to make peace with Buzz (who is till mad about the role Blake had in outing Selena). Harley leaves with Blake. Blake tells Harley that her publicist wants her to go on a book tour and she doesn’t want to go. Ross is busy with work and Holly is traveling to San Cristobel . Harley tells her that she understands just when you think you have everything going well, something else happens. Blake asks Harley if she is okay. Blake says she is lucky to have Ross so that she can write but she realizes Harley doesn’t have anyone and asks her how she is doing after the divorce. Harley runs to the bathroom and Buzz comes over and offers Blake coffee. She orders tea for Harley. Buzz goes to get the drinks and Harley comes back to the table. Blake thinks Harley should go back to the doctor. Harley says she will be okay.

Blake gives her a copy of the new book and signs it. Harley shows it to Buzz and he tells her she worked hard on it and shouldn’t give it away. Buzz apologizes to Blake and tells her he learned so much about Selena and would like to help make the book a success so it reaches Selena. He offers to have a book signing party at Company and he will invite the press and wonders if Holly would come. Blake thinks this is a ploy to get Holly back (Holly is currently in a triangle with Buzz and Billy). Buzz says only partially. Blake thinks Buzz would be good for Holly. Harley tells them she would like to be Blake’s stepsister. Blake tells them she has to get home and she gathers the kids to leave, thanking Buzz again. She tells Buzz to take care of Harley. Buzz tells Harley he thought she would be happy when he made up with Blake. He wonders what is up with her. Harley wonders why people make the same mistakes over and over again. Buzz thinks she is talking about him but she says the mistake is all hers and it will just get bigger and bigger. Buzz tells Harley that whatever she did he has probably done it at least one. Harley is sure he hasn’t been in her shoes before. Buzz asks her if she wants to talk to Frank and tells her to forgive herself. He goes to call Frank for her. Rick comes in and sits with Harley. Rick asks Harley if she is okay. He tells her that she is one of his top 6 favorite people and would like to help her if she has a problem. They talk about baby Robbie and how Rick wishes he had a child. Frank comes in and asks Rick if he and Harley can have a minute. Rick moves to the bar and Frank tells Harley that Buzz called him. He asks if Harley if he has to beat up someone for her. She says just her. Frank wants her to tell him what is bothering her but she doesn’t want to say it. She tells him she has been working so hard and has ended up screwing things up and being that stupid 16-year-old kid all over again. Frank says she has grown up so beautifully and he is proud of her. Harley says she thought she made that mistake because she was young and careless. Her life was finally on track and the world starts spinning again. Frank thinks she is doing just fine. Harley says she ignored all the signs, she attributed the nausea, fatigue and weight gain to stress. She lied to herself with Susan but she can’t do it this time. Frank finally understanding and tells her not to tell him. Harley tells him that she is pregnant.

May 4, 2001 –Frank asks Harley what she is going to do about her pregnancy. She has no idea but begs him not to tell anyone. Frank tells her that she won’t be able to hide it much longer and asks her if he is to go around and tell people she is into smuggling bowling balls. Assuming Phillip is the father, Frank tells her that Phillip will get suspicious when she shows up in a few months with a baby.

In the Bauer living room, Danny and Michelle are getting out some of the pain they had held back as they give their differing takes on Michelle telling Rick and Meta about what happened to Carmen. Michelle: “No, I’m not going to let you shut me out, not this time!….My family is not like your family….You see this as some kind of betrayal because in your world silence is sacred, but in my world, people trust people they love, you walked away, you left me with a big, terrible secret….I didn’t know if you would ever be able to come back to me.” Danny: “I stayed away from you for your own good.” Michelle: “That was then, now we’ve started our own family, we have a child, we can work everything out together.” They never come out and say that what happened to Carmen but it is enough to perk the listening Gus up. Michelle: “You were off in your own little black hole of guilt and despair, I know you thought you were protecting me, but I felt just as guilty as you.” Danny: “You didn’t do anything wrong.” Michelle: “If I couldn’t share your pain, I could at least share my pain with them.” Gus goes through the files while he listens and reads about Carmen’s death (which officially happened months before Danny wrapped her up and dumped her in the lake). Inside, Danny tells Michelle he feels betrayed because she talked to others about it. Michelle tells him that she was suffering and had to talk to someone and Danny had cut himself off from her so all she had was her family. She tells him that her family is now his family and they can be trusted. Danny is still not convinced and worried about what will happen if any of it gets out. Michelle tells him that he is just going to have to deal with it because she can’t undo it and she doesn’t want to. Michelle: “I refuse to fight her [Carmen] for you all over again. Do you know, I went through this pregnancy, because of her, without you? I went to bed every night wondering if my baby would have a father. I showed up at Infeirno day after day, prepared to humiliate myself for a little attention. But finally we won, Robbie and I. Carmen lost. THANK GOD! And now you’re mad at me because I shared something with my family that I couldn’t share with you because you wouldn’t let me?” She tells him that if anything he owes her an apology. Danny sits back and tells her that he didn’t realize she was so affected by what happened to Carmen and Michelle tells him he couldn’t have known because he left her life and wouldn’t talk to her. She tells him that they finally won and have their family and she doesn’t want Carmen to come between them yet again. Danny sits with her and apologizes to her and holds her. He asks her who else knows what happened besides Rick and Meta. Michelle tells him that Claire probably figured it out by now since she was very aware of what happened when she Michelle was kidnapped from the hospital. Danny tells her that he remembers Claire telling her to go to Abuela to find out where Michelle had been taken. He wonders if they can trust Claire. Michelle tells him that Maureen always told her to give people trust and they will repay you by being trustworthy. Danny tells her he hopes she was right. Michelle thinks they should give Claire a chance. Danny: “OK, I will try, very hard [to trust], I’m going to do my best. It’s not going to be easy. You are going to have to be very patient with me.” Meanwhile, Harley shows up at the van and listens to the conversation as well. Gus asks her what she knows about Claire and her connection to Carmen. She tells Gus that Claire was there when Carmen died and she handled all the arrangements. Gus thinks that is odd. He continues to ask Harley questions but she is preoccupied and not listening to him. Gus gets her attention and tells her that they should pay a visit to Claire Ramsey and with the taped evidence they should be able to get a court order to test Carmen’s remains.

My Comments:

Mon., May 7, 2001 – In the Surveillance Van: Harley and Gus are in the van but no one is talking inside the Bauer house. Harley gets off the phone and tells him that they got the court order to examine Carmen’s ashes. Gus tells another cop to go to the mortuary and get the ashes then call Danny and tells him that they got the ashes with a court order to be examined. Harley tells Gus he is working all the angles. He tells her that he wants to catch Danny’s reaction when they tell him they have the ashes. Harley tells him that is entrapment but Gus tells her he will do what he has to do to put the bad guys in jail. Gus tells her that he is sure a crime has been committed and he is just waiting to know what it was. He is going to wait and let Danny lead him to the answer. Harley doesn’t like it. Gus wonders what is wrong with Harley and asks about her hormones. Harley doesn’t like all the sneaky parts of his job. Gus hears Michelle and tells Harley to be quiet. They listen as Danny and Michelle rehash the argument they had the day before. Danny asks Michelle what will happen when everything she told Rick and Meta gets out. Michelle says she can trust her family and nothing will come out. Danny says she made them accessories after the fact. That is why he grew up with a code of silence. Gus is going out of his mind wanting to know what Rick and Meta are accessories to. Danny tells Michelle that he thought he heard the baby and she sees the baby monitor isn’t on. She goes over the table and turns it on and Gus and Harley get loud screeching feedback in their headphones. While they are trying to fix it so they can hear, but they can’t while Danny and Michelle continue their conversation. Danny tells Michelle that he killed his mother and no one can find out that she didn’t really die nine months ago. Michelle goes to get the phone and can’t hear on it. Danny says that Meta is in with the baby and he turns off the monitor. Now Gus and Harley can hear again. Danny answers the phone and learns the feds have Carmen’s ashes. Danny tells Michelle they are in serious trouble. Danny wonders why the feds wanted them if they didn’t know something. He tells her they were only talking about this last night and he had swept the house so there shouldn’t be any bugs. Michelle tells Danny not to worry. Danny says if the feds test the ashes they will be in trouble. She calls Ross and tells Danny they have to go over there. Gus and Harley say if they are leaving, so will they. Gus and Harley leave the van.

Tues., May 8, 2001 – At the Police Department: Ross strides in with Michelle and Danny waving his court order. Ross tells Gus that his court order is to stop them from examining Carmen’s ashes. Gus tells him that he is too late. The test has been run (boy, that was a rush) of the ashes and they aren’t those of Carmen Santos, but that of a large dog named “Wolf with an e” because he found a dog collar and tag in the ashes. Gus tells Danny that he should be happy this means his mom could be alive but he wonders if Danny already knew that. Gus tells Ross that they also had a court order and that is how they took possession of the ashes. He goes on to tell Ross, Danny and Michelle that he believes Carmen faked her own death, with the help from Danny and Michelle, to avoid federal prosecution. Michelle tells him that if Carmen is still alive why isn’t Gus out looking for her some place else? Gus tells her that he realizes it would take the heat off her and her husband if he would up and leave town to look for Carmen but it isn’t happening. Harley asks them if they want to say anything but Ross steps in and says he will talk to his clients before they say anything to the police. Everyone leaves them to talk. Ross: “A dog?” Danny: “I didn’t know it was a dog. And we didn’t know they weren’t Carmen’s at first.” They definitely weren’t in on Carmen faking her death. Ross tells them that they could possibly be accessories to a crime after the fact and he needs to know everything. Danny wants to talk things over with Michelle first. Ross tells them to do that but when they call him, they need to be ready to tell him the entire truth. He walks out. Michelle starts asking Danny how the feds found out, but he thinks they need to wait and talk at home. At the Bauer House: Gus and Harley make it back in the van and Gus goes over his notes, telling Harley that they know Claire knows something and they will talk to her first. Michelle and Danny get home and Gus and Harley start listening again. Michelle asks why Gus thought to have Carmen’s ashes tested. Danny questions who the feds could even question that knew anything. She tells him that the only one with any real knowledge is Claire and she is in San Cristobel for Edmund’s coronation. Danny thinks they should tell her to stay out of the country for as long as she can. Meta comes in the room and tells them about her day with the baby and goes on to tell them that she is fixing duck in the microwave for dinner. She goes into the kitchen and turns on the microwave, which gives Gus and Harley another shrill feedback so they are unable to hear the conversation. Harley (explaining the feedback): “I think that sounds like a microwave. You know that Meta she swore she’d never used that thing and now she uses it for everything. She put a duck in there…it’s actually a pretty good recipe she puts it in for 10 minutes…” Gus grumpily interrupts. Michelle calls Claire and tells her the situation. She tells Claire to stay out of the country until she calls her back. Claire tells her she will be in touch. Danny asks Michelle who else would know what is going on. Michelle says Rick and Meta only know what she told them, which is all hearsay. Gus and Harley get the signal back and listen as Michelle and Danny talk. Michelle is wondering why Gus is investigating the ashes all of a sudden. They were just talking about Carmen after they hadn’t mentioned her in months. Danny gets an understanding look on his face and starts moving around and looking in flowers and under the coffee table. Michelle asks him what he is doing and he holds his finger in front of his mouth to quiet her and tells her that he is just walking around because his back is hurting. He opens the door and tells her that he needs some fresh air. Michelle follows him. In the van, Harley and Gus are discusses Claire and what she may know. Harley tells Gus that she hasn’t heard Michelle and Danny talk in a while; they must have left the house. Gus is arguing with Harley about what they are doing. Harley: “I take exception to harassing senior citizens, especially when that senior citizen is a pillar of the community.” Danny: “Surprise!” Danny opens the van door and jerks Gus out, throwing him up against the side of the van. He curses Gus for bugging their home. Danny: “Can you hear me now?…Can you hear me now, Gus?.. They’ve been bugging us.” Michelle: “Is Frank involved in this too?” Danny: “Or is there only one traitor in the family these days?…Where’s the bug? Is it in the living room? I’ll tear the whole house apart. I’ll find it.” Gus tells him he will put two in for every one Danny finds. He tells Danny and Michelle that he has the law on his side, they can ask Harley. Harley tells them it was all legal. Michelle asks Harley if Frank betrayed them as well. Gus tells Danny they know his mother didn’t die when everyone thought she did and he will find out what really happened. Michelle and Danny leaves. Harley feels terrible, she tells Gus not to ever question her commitment to her job.

Elsewhere in Springfield….or out of it: Edmund and Beth prepare for his coronation ceremony. Many Springfielders are on hand, to support, or to try and stop it. Cassie and Richard are ready to run out of San Cristobel to live to fight another day. Cassie’s foot is hurt. Reva (in a gorgeous outfit) is blind, but managing to get around better. Susan gives Edmund a coronation present of a dragon necklace because he slays dragons. Edmund’s full name is used as part of the ceremony – Edmund Sebastian Winslow.  Edmund is presented with a large display Bible, chalice, a sword, and a cape. The palace is under heavy guard during the ceremony (including some location shots from somewhere). Edmund grabbed the crown and crowned himself. (That is a very big deal and is a rejection that no one in either the church or the government has a right to crown him, he crowned himself. It’s not something done lightly and was most famously done by Napoleon and you know how that turned out.) Edmund’s first act is to propose to Beth. It’s a nice moment.

The episode ends with an Edmund focused “Guiding Light is everything” commercial focused on this storyline. The end logo of the famous CBS eye has been modified to make the outer ring gold and the inner circle a diamond to make it look like an engagement ring. During its original promotion one couple on each CBS soap was supposed to be engaged during the advertising campaign. Everyone hoped it would be their favorite unmarried couple.

My Comments:

Wed., May 9, 2001 – At the Bauer House: Michelle and Danny are tearing the living room apart looking for the bug. Rick comes in and asks them what is going on. They tell him that Harley bugged their house and has been sitting out in a surveillance van listening to all their private conversations trying to find something to put Michelle and Danny in jail. Rick asks what they know and Danny tells him that so far all they know is that Carmen didn’t die outside the Bauer home last year and that the ashes are really that of a dog. Rick wants to know if they know what Danny had to do to protect Michelle but Danny doesn’t think so and thinks they shouldn’t discuss it there. Danny finds the bug and destroys it. Rick tells Danny that Michelle only told them because she needed someone to confide in and had to get the stress off her and the baby at the time. Michelle brings him up to date on what’s been happening with Gus. Danny tells Rick that they will probably be on both Rick and Meta wanting information and Rick tells him that he can handle the feds. Danny tells him that anything Michelle told him will be hearsay but Gus will still try to pump him for information. Danny: “We all have to stay very alert so things don’t get worse than they already are.” Rick: “It couldn’t possibly get any worse.” The doorbell rings as if on cue. Michelle and Rick look around uncomfortably, but Danny tells Rick to answer the door. It’s Harley.Danny: “Why don’t you show her a nice secure place for her to leave her next bug.” Michelle thinks she’s there to explain herself and repair their friendship, but she says she’s just there to talk to Rick. Danny can’t stand to be in same room as Harley and says he’ll be upstairs with Robbie, but warns Rick to watch her. Rick tells her she has already done enough damage to his family. Harley: “Well, I don’t like it anymore than you guys do, but it’s the job…. What could I do?”Michelle: “You could have quit.” Rick: “You could have tipped us off.” Harley  is thinking about asking for a desk job. Michelle: “Let me ask you something. Did you use our friendship to worm your way in her to plant that bug?” Harley: “Yes.” Michelle: “If you had any idea of what Danny has gone through to make a life for us, you’d be ashamed of yourself. He’s worked so hard to get himself out of this jam and then you just turn him to the FBI?” Michelle is irate and tells Harley that they have nothing on her or her husband and all she got out of ruining their friendship was the ashes of a dog. Michelle walks away leaving Harley with Rick. Harley tells Rick that she is getting hit from both sides and she just hopes she can salvage one friend. Rick: “Harley you picked one hell of a way of showing friendship.” Harley tells Rick she wants him to be her friend and he tells her that he is her friend. Harley: “So you understand.” Rick:“No, I don’t understand.” She is glad he understands but he lets her know that he doesn’t understand at all and he doesn’t like what she did. Rick: “A part of me agrees with my sister…I have seen what Danny’s gone through and, frankly Harley, I have been through a hell of a lot too. Too find out that this man ONCE AGAIN is in trouble with the law is a very hard pill to swallow. You have NO IDEA what this man has GONE THROUGH to get away from his family…YOU USED ME!” Harley claims that she’s the one who is being treated unfairly because everyone is mad at her.

Elsewhere in Springfield….any beyond: Cassie and Richard are still trying to escape San Cristobel. Beth responds to Edmund’s proposal with a long speech while Phillip wills her to say no.  Finally she says “Yes!”. Susan congratulates them. Later Edmund and Beth discuss how happy they are. Lillian wants to talk to them. The man Edmund asked Lillian where is he hired to romance Lillian and keep her busy and away from Beth. Meanwhile at the Lewis House, Blake, Ross, and Reva are preparing for Marah’s 18th birthday party as blind Reva makes disastrous attempts to act like everything is normal.  Pre-insane Catalina shows up and brings some Hispanic food and a present. Sam sets up a New Age encounter for the party-goers. Tony and Sam spar over Marah. Tony thanks Josh for the job and that Billy has been telling him both about the job and the similarities between Josh and Tony, including lots of stories about Josh’s wild youth. (See even Billy sees the similarity.) Ross and Blake give Marah a beautiful, huge diamond necklace and Tony feels bad because where previously he had lots of money now he doesn’t have much and so his present of diamond earrings cost much less than Ross’.

Tues., May 15, 2001 – At the Bauer House: Rick is holding up a fishing lure thinking about his dad. Michelle asks if he is going fishing. Rick says that their dad used to be meticulous about tying flies for fishing and he would love to go with him again. Michelle thinks Rick is lonely. Rick says he is anticipating being lonely. Michelle asks if he has been drinking but he says no. He is just facing reality. Michelle offers Rick ice cream to drown his sorrows. They sit there eating and talking. Michelle asks Rick what he meant about drinking. He tells her that ouzo is dangerous. They talk about Gus and Rick tells Michelle he doesn’t like him. She tells him that Gus will do anything to get something on Danny but Danny hasn’t done anything so he can’t. She tells Rick they are so close to having a normal life. She is sure Gus won’t be able to find anything to use against Danny. Rick is a little down and Michelle asks Rick if he will be okay. He says he will be and she tells him she is going to bed. She asks if he is going fishing but he says he changed his mind. Rick says a change of plans is the story of his life. He says “Oh, Harley” and sighs.

My Comments:

Wed., May 16, 2001 – At the Bauer House: Claire comes in and starts asking what the feds know. Danny puts on the radio to block any bugs and tells Claire about the bugs and the van with the satellite and that Gus knows about Carmen’s ashes. Danny and Michelle explain about parabola mics and how they can pick up things even without a transmitter. Danny: “The point is wherever you are from right now you just have to assume somebody is listening.” Claire is upset and says she will just avoid Gus. Danny tells Claire she has to answer Gus’s questions. Michelle says Claire has nerves of steel and will handle Gus fine. Danny says all their lives will go down the tubes if Claire screws this up. He tells her that she has to come up with an explanation about the ashes. Claire wants an attorney and Michelle says she will call Ross. Claire would prefer someone else but Danny demands she go with Ross. He tells her that no one else needs to know and he goes to call Ross. Claire has Ross over and she tells him that after Carmen died, someone stole her body and she was scared of the mob and their reaction so she got the ashes of a dog (named Wolfie) and put them in the urn. Ross doesn’t believe her and warns her that there is a heavy penalty for making false statements to the feds. Claire tells Ross that she does know the penalty for her admitting this will be losing her medical license and wonders if Gus will cut her a deal so her statement will remain private. Ross tells her that to cut a deal she would have to give him something he wants as well. She tells him that she isn’t going to change her story. Ross doesn’t want Claire talking to Gus without him and when she does talk to him to keep her answers short and not volunteer anything. Claire asks if she could just leave town. Ross says that won’t help. He calls Gus and tells him that he is representing Claire and would like to set up a meeting. Gus asks him if he is the only lawyer in town and Ross tells him he is just the best one in town. Gus tells him they will meet in 30 minutes. Ross hangs up and tells Claire, who is nervous and says she is worried about saying something wrong. When he comes back, Claire is gone. Danny is negative about Claire and Michelle asks him to give her a chance. Danny says Claire has never apologized to him for what she did. Michelle says not in words but in deeds she has apologized and reminds him about her helping him when he was shot and what she did to help Robbie be born. Danny says that does not erase a lifetime of selfishness. Michelle says she knows they can trust her.

Ross calls Gus. Gus: “Marler, what injunction do you plan to serve me today?”

Ross: “Oh, you got me there I haven’t even decided on that, oh well something will come to me. I’m returning your call you asked to see one of my clients.”

Gus: “No sir, you’re wrong. I haven’t asked to speak to Danny or Michelle.”

Ross: “Not not Danny or Michelle, not Tony either. The client I’m referring to is Claire Ramsey.”

Gus: “What? Are you the only attorney in town?”

Ross: “Just the best.”

Claire: “Ross, what if I say the wrong thing?”

Ross: “Don’t.”

Thurs., May 17, 2001 – Ross and Claire come into the police station. They take one reaffirming minute and Claire puts on a pathetic and upset face before they enter interrogation. Claire questions Harley objectivity and they snipe at each other. Gus tells Claire that Harley is a professional and he has brought her in on this case. Claire asks if she is in some sort of trouble and Gus tells her that she is in big trouble since the body she signed the death certificate for wasn’t human. Claire tells him there is an explanation. Carmen was shot dead outside the Bauer home and if the bullet were an inch away it would have hit Michelle, which frightened Claire. Despite their questions, Claire insists that Carmen really died and wonders why he would think otherwise. Claire: “Faked it, excuse me how do you fake no heartbeat, not respiration, believe me she died that night.” They mention the ashes. Claire: “That’s where it gets a little tricky.” Claire says Carmen’s body was stolen by two thugs who forced her to sign crematory orders and then made her make arrangements for other ashes. She said she did what she had to because the men threatened her and her daughter. Harley thinks it sounds made up and Gus asks why she didn’t notify the police. Claire says that they threatened to kill Michelle if she didn’t cooperate. She lied and did what they said to protect her daughter. Harley questions why Claire did it. Harley:“Because?” Claire: “Because they were large and mean looking and I assume they were armed.” Gus claps his hands and tells Ross his client will have to do a little better than that. Claire shoots her to the left side eye glare that she’s always done so well. Gus moves into Claire’s personal space and spins an alternative theory where Carmen didn’t want to go into the witness protection program and needed the help of a doctor to fake her own death. Claire denies it. Ross says she has cooperated enough and says they are leaving. Gus asks Claire some questions about things Michelle and Danny said at the house. He asks her why she would tell Danny to find Abuela when Michelle went missing from the hospital. Claire gives a great performance saying she doesn’t know anything about it. Gus tells Ross to explain the penalties for lying in a federal investigation to Claire. He tells him he has and they are leaving. They leave. Gus asks Harley when Michelle was in the hospital and why she left. Harley isn’t sure, but she says Michelle was in the hospital several times over the last year. Harley specifically knew of one time when she was in the hospital one time and was missing a few hours. However, that time was innocent. Harley says Michelle had a fight with Danny, was upset, and checked herself out without telling anyone. Gus said he will check it out anyway and calls Michelle. Gus: “Hi Mrs. Santos, it’s Gus Aitoro.” Michelle:“Now my day is complete…Lord knows I live to make your life easier.” He asks her when she was in the hospital, why did she disappear. Michelle mentions 20 different times she was in the hospital for tonsils, accidents, miscarriages, and having her son and asks him which time he was referring to. She tells him she can’t help him and if he wants anything else to call her attorney. At the Bauer House: Claire comes over and she and Michelle close the blinds and turns on the radio. Claire tells her about her interview with Gus and how he is a nightmare. She doesn’t think he knows anything for sure but he has a lot of strong suspicions. Claire says she stonewalled Gus about everything. Claire asks Michelle about the day she disappeared from the hospital and she guesses that Danny ended up killing Carmen. Michelle doesn’t confirm. Claire says she knows that Carmen had Michelle kidnapped to kill her and then a few hours later Danny and Michelle both show up very shaken. Claire wants Michelle to know how serious this is but Michelle says she is very aware.

My comments:

Fri., May 18, 2001 – At the Bauer Home: Danny comes running in excited. Danny: “Our kid is a genius! He just said his first word! OK it was more like a syllable but…” Danny realizes Michelle is upset and trails off, with a sigh he turns on the radio. Michelle tells Danny about Claire’s interview with Gus. She tells him that Gus was concerned about Michelle’s disappearance from the hospital last year. Danny: “Wow, Claire is really the gift that keeps on giving….I mean she is at least half the reason that  we are in this mess. She could at least use her duplicity and put it to good use right now.”  Danny asks Michelle out to dinner so they can forget all of this for a while. Danny wants to try a new Italian restaurant that has just opened on 7th Street. He believes Gus has hit a brick wall. He tells her the only people who can give the feds direct evidence about Carmen are the two of them and as long as they stay cool, Gus won’t be able to do a thing and they will be fine. Danny: “Hey, hey I know that look….You HONESTLY think I’m going to let anyone take me away from you, from you and our boy? No way. Remember what I promised you at our wedding? The last one?” Michelle: “Glory.” Danny: “Right. That’s right. You said that a glorious life for you would be a normal life and I’m not waiting anymore. I’m not. We’re can start having that right now tonight and we can continue to have it no matter what the hell goes on outside of us. We’re going to build that house…We’re going to have everything you want. Everything that you deserve.” Michelle: “And you.”  He hugs her and they kiss. He is trying to comfort her and tells her he won’t let anything happen to her. Danny promises to learn how to “use that nasty barbecue” so he can help Rick out and he’ll learn to love it like Rick does. They kiss and Michelle asks him if he wouldn’t rather stay in. They head upstairs. Michelle comes down in her silky nighty. Michelle picks up the baby monitor and listens to Danny talking to Robbie. Danny is working on getting Robbie to say his first word, just thrilled to be with his son. Michelle to herself after listening: “Oh, Danny, I hope Go isn’t his first word, I hope it’s Daddy.” She is in the kitchen when Rick comes in. She asks if he is alright and he tells her that he was visiting Harley and she has a few problems. Michelle isn’t very nice about Harley and asks Rick why he is so concerned about her. Rick says she is just a friend. She tells him she has to get back to Danny and the baby and asks Rick if he is okay. He says yes until she leaves and then he says no. Gus looks over the files again and tells Harley that they have hit pure gold. He tells her that they got a thumbprint on the evidence that was burned at Laurel Falls. There is a partial tape that they may be able to salvage a bit as well as their federal file number. He is going to send it to Washington and see what they can do. He tells Harley the good news is that they have Michelle Santos, which means they have them all.

My Comments:

Mon., May 21, 2001 – Ray and Tony are talking in the office at Infeirno. Tony is complaining about the birthday party Sam arranged for Marah. Ray: “You mean a masseur.” Tony: “What does a priest know about stuff like that?” Ray: “I wasn’t always a priest.”  He brought her back to Infeirno and she got caught, although she really wasn’t doing anything wrong she got arrested. Tony about Gus: “This guy has it in for anyone with the name of Santos.” Ray: “Isn’t that harassment?” Danny: “Not if we keep giving him just cause.”  Tony admits that some men he knows work for Johnny Merchardo (another mob family in the territory) and Tony is worried about it. Danny is talking to Ray about Gus getting close to the truth about Carmen. Ray says only three people were there and one is dead. Danny is worried about Claire talking. Danny tells Ray that Meta and Rick only have hearsay but Claire knows things and can tell Gus things. Ray says Claire hasn’t said anything so far. Danny: “Claire is trouble waiting to happen.” At the police station: Gus is showing Harley the evidence they have on Michelle, including identified fingerprints from the evidence Michelle stole and burned. They can prove Michelle tampered with evidence in a federal case and Gus will use this to crack Danny like a walnut. Gus: “Maybe she will be the one to crack.” Harley: “No, Michelle will never give up Danny.” He thinks he will try to crack Claire first because he sees her as the weakest link. Gus says Claire knows what happened with Carmen and she has the mother factor going on. Harley doesn’t understand. Gus tells her you can usually count on a mother to protect her child. Harley asks if he will use the potential charges against Michelle to pressure Claire. He thinks it is the best way. Harley tells Gus he can do it alone because she quits. She starts throwing her things in a box. Gus asks what she is doing. Harley tells Gus she is serious and maybe her replacement will appreciate him more. Gus says she needs his permission to be reassigned and he won’t give it. He tells her that she is a good cop despite her emotional fits. Harley sits the box down. Gus says she is sensitive to the mother/child issue because of her condition. He is not without feelings and won’t make her watch him pressure Claire. He leaves. Meta comes in looking for Gus. She asks Harley where he is and why he is doing this to Danny. Meta: “Why? Why is he doing this? Aren’t there enough real criminals? Why is he focusing all his time and attention on Danny who has turned out to be a model citizen?” Harley tells her Gus will be back soon. Meta notices Harley’s tummy and asks her when she is due. Harley is taken aback. Meta apologizes and Harley tells her that she didn’t realize it was that obvious. Meta tells her that it is a little noticeable but what tipped her off was how beautiful she looks. Harley says Meta should have been a mother. Meta says it is nice being a great aunt and there are times when someone may need a mother. Harley looks sad and tells Meta she has to finish her paperwork. Harley tells Meta she hasn’t made the pregnancy public. Meta has to go and will leave a message for Gus that she is not happy. At the Spaulding Mansion: Gus is walking around the room when Claire comes in. Claire asks him what he is doing there and he tells her he is there to make a deal. Gus asks her to tell him what really happened to Carmen and he will keep Michelle out of a federal penitentiary. Claire tells Gus to get out. Gus says he has evidence on Michelle that will put her away for 30 years. Claire calls him a pig and he starts to leave. She finally gives in and asks what he wants. Gus tells Claire she has to testify about Carmen but Claire says no deal. He tells her he will arrest Michelle. Claire wants to know what he is asking. Gus wants her to wear a wire when around Danny. Gus: “I know that you’re smart and you’re tenacious, devious and got the morals of a guppie… we’ll keep Michelle out of prison and put Danny away for life. I’m sure he’s a mother’s worst nightmare.” Claire doesn’t think Michelle will forgive her for this. Gus says there are tradeoffs. He gives her time to think about it and leaves. Claire is crying when Alan enters. Alan: ” Entertaining the FBI?” He tells her she should not have talked to Gus without her attorney. Claire says she is in a mess and nothing can help. Alan: “Well, there’s nothing that gets my juices going more than an impossible cause and Claire with a little money, power and brains, anything is possible.”

Tues., May 22, 2001 – At the Spaulding Mansion: Claire is worrying about Gus when Alan comes in. He tells her that her only mistake was not confiding in him. He thinks they should share everything. He would like to help her. She tells him that she would like to but she feels like she is trapped. Alan thinks she needs to speak to a lawyer if she wants to confide in someone else that may be able to help. She calls Ross and tells him about Gus and his visit. She tells him that Gus wants her to cut a deal in order to help Michelle and she doesn’t know what to do. Ross tells her that if what she has to do impacts another one of his clients, he will no longer be able to represent her. He tells her that it would be a conflict of interest and he advises her to find a criminal attorney quickly. He will give her references to a good lawyer if she wants and wishes her luck. Claire tells Alan that Ross dumped her but Alan thinks that is a good thing. He says Ross is competent but is overly principled and soft. She is in a dicey legal situation and in need of a shark. Alan: “You don’t need a small time lawyer. You know a lawyer and believe me I know from sharks……I will get her a lawyer who feeds on federal agents.” Claire thanks him and says she has to get to the hospital. Alan says he has never seen her this troubled. She tells him that he may just have given her a way out.

Thurs., May 24, 2001 – At Cedars: Rick pushes Claire to make sure keeping Michelle safe is her priority. Rick: “It’s not about you, Claire. The idea here is to protect my sister.” Rick meets up with Dr. Sedwick. (I keep watch on this. I want to find her first and last appearance.) Margaret gives Rick Harley’s sonogram and from the due date Rick realizes there is a good chance he is the father not, Phillip. Gus catches up with Claire and asks her if she is going to help them. She tells him to stop hounding her. He says she has access to Danny and they want her cooperation, else she and her daughter will be in jail. He tells her if she wears the wire, only Danny will do the time and she and Michelle will go free. Claire tells him she needs more time. He tells her she has until the end of the day. He leaves, telling her that if he gains the information he is looking to her for from another resource the deal is off. Claire is shaken and calls Russo. She tells him she needs him to buy her some more time. Michelle comes in to see Claire. Claire is happy and shocked to see her. Michelle asks her if she has talked to Gus again. Claire tells her she hasn’t heard from him. Michelle is surprised that he wouldn’t be bothering her. She tells Claire that everything will be fine as long as they all stick together and not say anything. Claire says she understands and then makes an excuse to leave. Michelle looks worried.

My Comments:

Fri., May 25, 2001 – At the Bauer House: Michelle comes home and tells Danny that Claire seems nervous after talking to Gus. He hugs her and tells her that Claire really doesn’t know anything more than what she did but he is a little upset that she is talking to Gus at all. Michelle says Claire doesn’t like Gus any more than they do. Danny tells Michelle he doesn’t trust Claire but she can’t sell him out on this one. The phone rings and it is Abuela. Danny asks Abuela how is Fidel treating her. She asks Danny if the line is safe. She says they are puzzled and thought he would be indicted quickly but she heard the evidence was lost. She wonders if all the evidence has disappeared. Danny says the feds are still investigating Carmen’s death and she should stay away. They end their call and Maria turns to Carlos and tells him he can go home, even Danny doesn’t know what Carlos knows about Carmen’s death. She asks him about the thugs who kidnapped Michelle for Carmen. Carlos says one is dead and the other will keep silent for fear of becoming dead. Maria tells Carlos she doesn’t think Danny should be punished for killing his mother. Michelle is upset to hear from Maria but Danny kisses her to try to reassures her. He leaves to go to work. Rick comes in and Michelle offers to make him some dinner. She asks him to hold Robbie while she cooks but he tells her he can’t hold the baby right now. She asks if something happened at work. He says he had a busy day and is very tired. He needs some space. Michelle thinks he is acting weird and wants to know what is really wrong. Rick says he isn’t hungry and goes out to the yard. Michelle gets on the phone to Phillip. She says something is wrong with Rick and asks him to come over.

Not sure which day this is, but I think it’s Tues., May 29, 2001 – Alan and Claire are having a lovely lunch in the Spaulding Study, but Claire is distracted. Alan urges her to confide in him, but Claire doesn’t think she can without getting Alan in the difficult situation too. Alan has arranged for his lawyer Vince Russo to take on the case and he stops by. At the police station, Gus justifies his actions to Harley who admits she saw Claire the night before and she was jumpy. Russo urges Claire to tell him everything under attorney client privilege. Gus sees that Harley has a sonogram and wants to see it which Harley agrees to, before Rick (the father) has seen it. Rick keeps calling, but Harley is avoiding his calls. Alan comes in and talks with Claire. Claire: “Is there a limit to forgiveness?” Alan: “I certainly hope not.”…. Alan: “There is a reason they call it a Family Tree, you know. Millions of things happen to it, but it still stands. It still grows.”

Wed., May 30, 2001 – Harley comes back into the office and finds Aitoro at her desk. Gus argues that Danny and Michelle killed Carmen. At the Police Station: Claire comes in with Russo. She is against the deal but Russo is telling her to take it. They go into Gus’s office and Vince tells Gus his client will wear the wire but under certain conditions. He wants Claire to be granted transactional immunity but Gus is against it. Russo asks how many time she will have to wear the wire and Gus tells her that she will wear it as many times as it takes. Claire tells Gus and Russo to get on with it. Gus gets the wire and tells her how to put it on and that it is voice activated. The recorder will be taped to the small of her back and the microphone will be either in her jacket or in her cleavage. Claire puts the wire on and Gus tells her that it will be fine but she needs to get used to it for a day or so before she goes to talk to Danny. Claire tells him that she thought time was money and she is intent on going right away. She leaves. Danny is back in his office on the computer when Claire arrives. Danny asks what she is doing there and she tells him she doesn’t want anything to spoil her relationship with Michelle or Robbie so she has come to clear the air.

My Comments:

Thurs., May 31, 2001 – At Infierno: Danny tells Claire that he has nothing to discuss with her and he doesn’t feel they need to clear the air. She tells him that he is avoiding her and he tells her that she is of no consequence to him. He stays out of her relationship with Michelle and wants nothing to do with her. He tells her to get out of his office and he walks out for a moment. Claire adjusts her wire before he came back in. When he returns, Claire asks Danny if the place has been swept for bugs because she can’t afford for Gus to hear what she has to say. Claire tells Danny that she can’t afford for Gus to get more evidence on her, he already knows that she faked Carmen’s death. Danny says if none of them cooperate with Gus he can’t get anything on them. Claire tells Danny Gus has been threatening her. Danny tells her to calm down; he isn’t talking to Gus at all. Claire says that Gus told her that Danny tried to implicate her in Carmen’s murder. Danny tells her that is a good idea but he hadn’t thought of that. Claire is getting upset that Danny is talking more and just spits out that she knows he killed his mother the night Michelle disappeared from the hospital. She tells him that he has the most to lose so he should talk to her. Danny tells her she has a wild imagination and a reckless mouth. She continues on with Carmen conversation and Danny gets angry. He tells her he will not discuss his mother with her now or ever. He tells her that Gus doesn’t know as much as he pretends to know and she should keep her mouth shut. He tells Claire to leave his office and this time he follows her out. Claire calls Gus and tells him that she talk to Danny but didn’t get anything concrete. He tells her to try again; the clock on his deal is ticking. Rick says Gus is making life hell around his house and Harley has to be involved because of her job. Harley says she feels bad about it as well. Rick says his house is bugged and under surveillance and he can’t sneeze without the feds hearing. Phillip isn’t buying and he tells Rick that Harley would never hurt him on purpose. Rick says he doesn’t blame Harley for bugging the house. On top of everything else Michelle and Danny are being hounded to the point that they can’t even walk outside with their baby. Phillip says this should be a happy time for Danny and Michelle but he wonders if Robbie isn’t reminding Rick of what he doesn’t have. Phillip says it makes sense that Rick feels bad about not having children. Carlos Sandoval is standing on the docks and says he called Gus with the tip to look in harbor near the docks as a business decision.

My Comments:

Fri., June 1, 2001 – While she is out, Gus greets Michelle and is smugger than ever. He tells her to have a great evening because he just got a tip that is going to make his superb. He invites her to the station for another chat but she tells him to go away. He doesn’t listen and Tony comes up behind him and repeats for him to leave and stop bothering his family, they are all legit. Gus tells them that he will get them all. Harley comes out and Gus and her leave. Michelle is worried; she thinks Gus knows something new. Harley asks Gus if that confrontation was necessary. He tells her it wasn’t necessary but it sure was fun. Tony and Michelle go over to the bar and Danny sets out a bowl of some new potato chip he wants them to try out. Michelle tells him about Gus and that she is worried. Danny goes to take care of some business and Michelle and Tony eat chips and talk about things. Tony tells her that she was brought up seeing cops as people to go to when you need help. He was brought up that they thought they were above the law and they were not to be trusted. She asks him why he isn’t more worried about Gus then. Tony tells her that Gus is only bluffing but Michelle isn’t so sure. Tony tells her to trust him on this, things are changing for them, the Santos family is legit and he is probably the first Santos to ever go to a prom. Michelle wonders why Claire was there as well. Danny tells her that he believes Claire was on a fact-finding mission for Gus because she was asking a lot of questions. Danny says she was pumping him for information about the night Carmen died. Michelle tells Danny that Claire has been trying to help them out; she can’t understand what has changed. Danny says in all these months, Claire hasn’t mentioned anything about Carmen’s death but today she was practically asking him to draw her a map to the body. Danny thinks Gus threatened Claire and she believed him. Michelle says Gus was in the club earlier and was acting like he knew something. She tells Danny if Claire is helping Gus they will have to be very careful. At the Waterfront: Carlos and a henchman are at the docks talking about Danny and how they called the FBI to search the water for Carmen’s body so Danny will end up in jail and they wont be to blame. They leave. Harley and Gus arrive and Gus tells her about the tip. He calls a group of divers and tells them to get down there. Harley doesn’t understand why Gus is so out to get Danny. She tells him Danny is a good guy and deserved to be innocent until proven guilty. Gus tells her that is what they are doing there, looking for evidence to prove Santos guilty. Harley sits back and is very quiet. She tells Gus that is the very water where they found her mother’s body five years ago when she was murdered. Gus apologizes for not knowing and tells her that he is sympathetic and if she wants to leave, he will understand. Harley tells him that she is there to do her job and she will be fine. He asks about Nadine and Harley tells him a little. He goes on to tell her that Claire didn’t get anything on the wire but that if they find something there along with Claire’s testimony that she helped Carmen fake her first death, they will have Danny and Michelle. Harley says she almost feels sorry for Claire. Gus thinks Harley’s sympathy is misplaced. They have to have Claire to prove that Carmen didn’t die on the porch. Harley repeats that she knows Danny is a good person. Gus says a good person who does bad things and he will have to pay for those bad things. Harley agrees that if Danny did something he deserves what he gets. The dive team arrives and starts to go about their search.

My Comments:

Mon., June 4, 2001 – Claire to Danny: “Do you have this place swept for bugs?” – Danny: “Yay, every day.” (as if she asked if he emptied the wastepaper baskets.) A skeleton is brought from the bottom of the lake. Harley is skeptical that it is Carmen, but Gus is convinced. A few minutes later after talking to the coroner, Gus calls Claire and tells her it’s time to get Danny to confess what happened that night at the docks. Claire seems worried and tells Gus, Danny is not going to buy her going to talk to him two times in the same day. Gus says to tell Danny that she got a tip from her lawyer Vince Russo. She reluctantly agrees. Meanwhile Danny and Michelle discuss Claire and if she would betray Michelle and work with the Feds. Michelle wants to ask Claire what she is up to, but Danny says not to, he doesn’t want to tip his hand. Danny: “I’m sorry, honey, you ought to be able to trust your mother.” Michelle is getting ready to leave and says she’s going home and getting in the tub. Danny says with that as incentive he’ll get home as quickly as possible. The topic of Rick also comes up and Danny mentions that Rick, Harley, and Phillip were having dinner together and it seemed rather intense. Michelle assumes they must have told Phillip about the baby and says she must go talk to Rick. On her way out she runs into Frank and she tells him what may have happened, he says he will support Harley in any way. Michelle heads home and finds Rick, who explains that Phillip set up the meeting to find out what was the matter with Rick. Meanwhile, Claire rushes over to see Danny, who is not at all pleased to see her. She says she got a tip from her lawyer that there was activity at the lake and that that can only mean one thing. Danny acts like he has no idea what she is talking about. She says it’s time to fess up about what happened that night at the docks, that he has put Michelle and her in enough trouble; It all has to end. Danny seems confused by her behavior and tells her to back off. Claire: “You can’t just dismiss me like some busboy!” Danny: “Want to bet!” She says fine and goes to leave and he says wait and tears open her jacket. He finds the wire and tears it off. Danny: “How do you know?” Claire: “I know because he told me.” Danny: “And you believed him?” she tells him that she was ratting him out to save Michelle. He says if that were true, why didn’t she tell Michelle and hands her the phone to call and tell her. Danny, understanding how the system works: “You got Aitoro nothing, so you are expendable to him.” Claire won’t take the phone and he says you will probably lose your job and maybe end up with jail time, but most of all she has lost her daughter forever.

Tues., June 5, 2001 – At the Bauer House: Danny is watching Michelle sleep and still looks preoccupied. Michelle wakes up and kisses her hubby asking him why he got in so late. He tells her that Claire came back and he has some bad news to tell her. Michelle tells him just to spit it out. He goes over what Claire did and that he ripped her jacket off and found the wire she was wearing. Danny: “[Claire] She was acting weirder than normal. Very jumpy. When I made a move toward her she tried to run out of my office.” Michelle is angry with Claire and when Danny tells her they will just have to watch what they talk about around her Michelle tells him she has no intentions of ever talking to her again. Michelle: “No, I had a mom. Claire gave birth to me. She walked away from me when I was a baby probably the biggest blessing she could have gave me.” Danny holds Michelle as the full situation hits her. Michelle brings Robbie down to the kitchen while she cleans up a bit. Claire walks in and tells Michelle they have to talk. Michelle tells her she has nothing to ever say to her again. Claire tells her that she has to listen to her side of the story. Michelle accuses her of rolling over on her husband to save her own medical license. Claire tells her that isn’t why she did it. She tells her about Gus and the evidence he has against Michelle and says she was only trying to keep her daughter out of prison. Michelle tells her that she is not her mother and she should get out. Claire reluctantly leaves. Moments later, Harley comes in and tells Michelle that they need her, Danny, Rick and Meta down at the police station at 10AM. There have been some discoveries that they need to know about. Michelle is upset about the whole situation. Harley apologizes and tells Michelle she would love to get off this case but hasn’t had any luck. Michelle says at first she was angry but now she is counting on Harley to keep Gus honest. She reminds Harley that she is practically family and glances at Harley’s tummy. Harley is meeting with Rick, Meta, Michelle, Danny and Robbie. Harley says she is trying to keep them up to date on the investigation. Danny wonders where Gus is and Meta wonders why they had to come down to the PD. Harley says she wants to give them a heads up. She tells them that a body was found at the ferry dock and Gus thinks it is Carmen’s. She tells them if they know anything they should come clean to their attorneys ASAP. Meta is upset that Harley drug them down there for that. Harley is upset that everyone is against her again. Everyone leaves her upset. After the Bauers have left and are at the police station, Gus picks the lock on the kitchen door and goes on in. He rummages through everything until he finds Danny’s gun. He checks the serial number and pulls out a firing casing and test fires the weapon. He pulls the slug out and put it in a baggie marked, “evidence.” Gus leaves, happy. After the Bauer-Santos family get home they take precautions for listening device, Danny, Michelle, Meta, and Rick discuss what this latest police revelation means. Danny tells them best bet is to ride it out and that if worse comes to worse he will protect them by making a deal by pleading guilty himself. He grabs the phone and calls Ross.

Danny: “Look, you all are my family, every one of you. You know you stood by me when…when I really didn’t deserve it.”

Meta: “Yes, you DID deserve it. If you hadn’t made that terrible, terrible choice we wouldn’t have Michelle or Robbie.”

Danny: “I want you to stay out of it.”

Meta: “Then you don’t know me very well.”

When Gus comes back in, Harley tells him she hates him. She tells him that the meeting didn’t go well with the Bauers and she wonders if his trip to the ME was any better. He is happy. He tells her they got everything they needed. The dental records matched and there was a bullet stuck in the bone as well. To top it all off he even got a warrant for Danny Santos’ firearms. He will deliver the warrant himself. He tells Harley to call the jail and book a cell for Danny. He leaves. Harley: “Sorry, Danny.”

My Comments:

Wed., June 6, 2001 – Later the same day, Ross comes over in answer to Danny’s call. Michelle, Danny and Ross are sitting at the kitchen table discussing their trip to the police station. Michelle and Danny bring Ross up to speed and  Michelle says that Harley thinks that an autopsy will prove that the body is Carmen. Ross feels it’s strange that Gus called the entire family to come to the police station to tell them, especially when Gus hadn’t even showed up to give them the news in person. Ross: “There’s something more important to Gus Aitoro than putting the screws to the Santos family? I find that hard to believe.”  Ross wants to know if there is anything else that happened. Danny tells him that Harley advised him to implicate himself so that the Feds would go easier on everyone. Ross says no way. The way they are going to handle the Feds is to trust no one and to say nothing, especially to Gus because he’s dangerous. Ross: “I have seen rogue cops before but I have never seen anything like this rogue federal agent.”  Danny says that he is a loose cannon. There’s a knock at the door. Michelle goes to the door to find Gus. He wants to know what’s going on with all the blinds closed. Michelle tells him to go away and is joined by Danny telling him that he has 5 seconds to get off the property. Ross appears behind them and asks Gus if he has a warrant. Gus says no but he has a court order. Ross takes it from him and tells Danny that they want his gun and to go and get it. As Danny leaves Gus makes his way into the kitchen. Gus tells Michelle that she can turn down the music because he can hear what they were saying. Gus: “Poor Michelle, poor, poor, Michelle…. First you tried to derail the case against your husband and now you have a case against yourself. Nothing is working for you. You must feel very stupid…..She has been a very, VERY bad girl.” Ross asks what he’s talking about. Gus explains that he still has proof that Michelle has destroyed FBI evidence. Michelle asks if he’s going to pressure her into turning against Danny like he pressured Claire into wearing a wire. She explains to Ross how Claire tried to trick Danny into confessing on tape. Gus says that it’s never a dull moment and that he bets that Blake could turn this all into a best seller. Ross tells him no way and that unless he has another court order to leave Blake alone. Ross also says that he never approved of Blake writing the book. Danny returns with the gun. Gus takes the gun and says that after a lunch he is looking forward to, he will take it right to ballistics (this is a dig because although Ross doesn’t know it Blake has set up a lunch with Gus as part of her snooping). He hopes that the tests on the gun give him a reason to return. He leaves and Ross closes the door behind him. He then turns to Danny and Michelle and tells them that now the questions become tougher. He explains that they are running a ballistics test on the gun, and that Gus tried to get him by using Claire and that he is going to indict him for the murder of his mother. Ross: “He tried to record you using Claire as a mic stand.” Danny and Ross agree that Gus will most likely move to indict Danny for Carmen’s murder. Michelle is angry because it’s all unfair. Ross asks if she means the way that Gus is handling the case or that Danny is accused of murder. Michelle says both. She feels that Gus is dangerous and that he has it in his head that Danny is a cold-blooded killer. She believes that the whole thing is a game to him. Ross agrees with everything but says that Gus did not invent all of the unanswered questions about Carmen. Michelle explains that Danny was just protecting her and their unborn child and that he is not a murderer. Ross repeats it and says that he noticed that she did not say that Danny did not shoot Carmen. Danny wants to know if Ross realizes just how much Carmen wanted to get rid of Michelle. Danny explains that Carmen did try to get rid of Michelle so he did pretty much what Ross was thinking that he did because he had to stop his mother. Ross stares at Danny. Danny wants to know since everything is out in the open now how they are going to keep Gus from proving it. Ross comments that he can’t prepare a defense until he knows what charges will be filed. He wants to know if Claire could have gotten anything on tape. Danny says no and explains that when Claire came into his office to clear things up, he knew that she was up to something. Michelle says that Claire has a pretty good idea about everything. Ross tells them that have to be on guard for hard evidence. Danny says that evidence is nothing if he doesn’t go to trial. Ross wants to know what he’s thinking. Danny has a plan to leave town, to run. Ross tells him that he’s not going anywhere. Michelle decides that the plan might work if she and the baby leave with Danny. It almost worked last time but Carmen kidnapped Michelle. Ross tells Danny if they leave it will only make matter worse. They will get caught and there will be even more charges. Danny becomes angry. Danny: “What do you want me to do, Ross? Pull out my blue suit and learn how to smile at the jury?” Ross: “Yes, pull out the blue suit, brush up on your manners. You have GOT to fight this. It’s the only way I firmly believe it…I’ll find a way [to clear Danny].” Michelle wants a guarantee that Ross can get Danny off. Michelle tells Danny that truth is on their side. Danny promises Ross to stay. Ross assures him that they can win if they fight. Michelle gives it 100% backing and Ross leaves. As Michelle closes the door, she tells Danny he better not even think of leaving. Danny tells her that it’s so ironic that he protected himself by pulling the wire off Claire and at the same time blows her chance at immunity. She tells him Gus is much more interested in pinning a murder rap on him. She wants to know if Danny is now thinking of going to Gus to cop a deal. Danny says that he knows that Gus is out to get him and that he doubts that Ross can stop him. He says that everything is his fault and that the least he can do is protect her from what he has done. Michelle asks him to promise her that he will not turn himself in to protect her. He responded by asking her if she wants him to wait around for a guilty verdict. She says that she will tell him exactly what she wants.

Michelle: “Aitoro is not going to take this away from us Danny, so don’t you help him. If you go away we lose, whenever we’re apart we lose. Weren’t you the most miserable guy in Springfield when I was living in New York? So you’ve got to stay with Robbie and me – no matter what.”
