Couple Codes

For newcomers to soapdom, there has been a trend  for the last 15 years or so to create a name for a couple by combining their two first names. This is often used with -ers added on the end to describe fans of the character. Sometimes they try to make it a real word, but usually it just has to be pronounceable. My favorite all time name is CarJack from As the World Turns. A close second, also from ATWT, is LuRe.  I invented the term Couple Codes to describe them, but Natnic informs me that there is a real word. She says they are called a  “portmanteau or portmanteau word. Webster’s says a portmanteau word is a blend.” I’m glad to know the real word.

I have also seen them referred to as Smush words or Smush names. Also, one reference as smooshed names. I still like mine best.

My standard for inclusion in this list is that they were used by fans either in print or online at least once. That’s a pretty loose standard but in trying to capture discussion board culture where they were first used from over a decade ago isn’t easy, so if I can find it once it’s good. Also, I’m not promising all couple codes were used when the couple was first introduced as I mentioned above it wasn’t in vogue until about roughly 15 years ago and fans are much quicker today to come up with a name for a couple now than then. Some fans continue to discuss a couple by its initials as shorthand instead, although that can get confusing too.  I also allow modern uses if fans of a couple today use a couple code for them I include it, even if they didn’t have one when they were actually on air.

Here’s my list of name combinations, if you have run across one you don’t know from Guiding Light. Please suggest others to add to my list.

Manny – Michelle Bauer and Danny Santos

Were there any Sammy fans? Otalia fans like to refer to the pairing of Frank and Natalia as Fratalia.

I’ve seen these codes referred to as a portmanteau or portmanteau word. Webster’s says a portmanteau word is a blend.

Thanks for the information. I updated the beginning to reflect the real word. Thanks for the Fratalia suggestion and I’m always looking for more. 🙂

    What about Beth and Coop?

    • glmanny Says:

I haven’t found a couple code for them yet. If you know of one, let me know and I’ll add it. My standard is only 1 use by a fan to include. Thanks for reading the list.

I still miss Mallet and Dinah, so much.
    What a wonderful supercouple!
I am still on cloud nine, over their reunion several weeks before the finale and on the finale, 9-18-2009, itself!
Just rummaged through my SID supercouple edition.
They are listed at number 36, in the top 50 supercouples!
Robert Bogue and Gina Tognoni were Golden chemistry together.
You can’t find that chemistry every day. I wish they were on a romcom sitcom together. They are the types who would carry their explosive chemistry anywhere they went!

  4. Gina D. Says:

Oh, forgot to mention that Beth and Coop were called Boop, LOL.

  5. Gina D. Says:

Frank and Blake were affectionately called Flake by the pro couple posters.
Buzz and Lillian were also called Buzzillian by the pro couple posters.
Rick and Mindy were called Rindy by the pro couple posters.

Looking at these only 13 couples survived to the finale, THE END of our beloved Guiding Light:
Long live our memories of our beloved couples, characters and stories on the Light!

  6. Gina D Says:

Ooops, sorry glmanny, forgot to add Manny! That makes 14 couples off of the list. Sorry about that.

  7. Couple Code Pages Expanding | Glmanny's Blog Says:

[…] One of the first extra information pages I created on the blog was the meaning behind couple codes, the names for couples where they combine their names. The list for Guiding Light seems to be reaching completion. Every couple of months I still get one to add, but I think it’s about there. Find more information about the term and a list of the Guiding Light Couple Codes here: […]
