Couple Codes Update August 2022

August 15, 2022

Here’s my latest update on creating a list of couple code aka smoosh names aka the names people create for couples by combing their names. For example Manny is Michelle Bauer Santos and Danny Santos and Marony is Marah Lewis and Tony Santos. I’ve posted the list from other soaps before, but I’ve been trying to post quarterly updates to help get suggestions who I’ve missed. I’ve added more since last time, but please check for your favorites (or even the not so favorite couples you can remember). I’m a long way from having all of them for all soaps here. I think I have finally collected most of the Guiding Light couple codes, but I’m adding those below and am now branching out to collect other soaps. The shows and the names are listed in alphabetical order. All couples are eligible to be included if they are on a daytime soap opera and have a commonly used nickname or code.  I threw a few primetime ones on at the bottom too, just for fun. This list is by no means complete at this point, but I found with my work with the Guiding Light list that people tend to respond more after they see what you have.

I also have reserved a spot on the the list for anyone with a nickname that might be confused with a couple code. For example, on the Guiding Light list I’ve included Cleva for Clone Reva. So here are the couples whose name I’ve remember or had suggested to me so far. If you spot I’m missing one from any daytime soap, please let me know on Facebook, Twitter, in the comments below or by e-mailing me at Robansuefarm@hotmail.com

Fan Service

September 29, 2018

Every Friday night I try to post another term of Soap Opera Jargon. I haven’t gotten in done much lately, but hope springs eternal. Find more on the soap opera jargon page.

Fan Service – Fan service is when writers add a scene or in rare cases a storyline because it’s something that long term fans or fans of that particular character really want to see or has special meaning for them. It could be as simple as having a couple dance to “their” song or as extensive as reworking a story to reassign the parentage of a child to a supercouple rather than the product of an ill-advised affair. Normally this isn’t a problem, I mean if you know what fans want why would you deliberately not give it to them when you want them to watch? However, it can sometimes become paralyzing when fans refuse to let a couple face obstacles aka stories or writers are not imaginative enough to come up with a story other than a romantic triangle. On the other hand, if they had indulged in fan service we could have have had THIS instead of The Last Jedi.

Soap Jargon Cast List

August 25, 2018

Every Friday night I try to post another term of Soap Opera Jargon. I haven’t gotten in done much lately, but hope springs eternal. Find more on the soap opera jargon page.

Cast List – Sometimes spelled Castlist – Cast lists are exactly that – a list of the cast giving both actor name and character name. They are shown in the end credits of episodes and as soap opera magazines developed it became a popular feature to publish a list of the current cast. (Here at GLManny we’ve started collecting them for Guiding Light. Watch for more! Or if you know of an issue with a list please SHARE!)

Soap Opera Jargon: Granny Clause

May 12, 2018

Every Friday night I try to post another term of Soap Opera Jargon. I haven’t gotten in done much lately, but hope springs eternal. Find more on the soap opera jargon page.

Granny Clause – The famous Granny Clause was negoiated by Eileen Fulton who played the vixen Lisa Miller Hughes on As the World Turns. She put in her contract that Lisa couldn’t be made into a grandmother. She pointed out the fate of Barbara Berjer‘s ATWT character Claire Cassen. Claire had become a grandmother on the show. They SORASed her grandchildren and she became a great-grandmother. She looked too young to be a great-grandmother, so TPTB hit her with a truck. Fulton said the clause was self-protection. It also got her a great deal of publicity. When Fulton got older she removed the clause, but everyone remembered it so when Lisa’s son Tom and his wife Margo lost a baby and had continued fertility issues everyone blamed Fulton. Today younger women are OK with being grandmothers (think Brooke Logan on The Bold and the Beautiful who has been a grandmother for at least a decade) so there will probably not be other Granny Clauses, but you never know. Read a lot more about it in the February 8, 2000 issue of Soap Opera Weekly.

Soap Opera Jargon Baby Rabies

April 7, 2018

Every Friday night I try to post another term of Soap Opera Jargon. I haven’t gotten in done much lately, but hope springs eternal. Find more on the soap opera jargon page.

Baby Rabies – Baby Rabies in its most direct form is used by soap fans for a couple or a woman suddenly and usually inexplicably becoming obsessed with having a baby. If writers have a happy couple and want a threat or storyline other than a third party attempting to break them up, having a baby is the next go to storyline. The quest for the baby then usually eats up the show taking over not only the couple’s storylines, but those associated with them. Often there will be multiple pregnancies at once bringing up the opportunities for baby switches, one father having kids with two different women at once, etc. The term is also used disparagingly by soap fans who don’t really care for the twists and turns of any pregnancy (which to be fair are normally presented according to a very predictable template) and use it for any baby related storyline. As in “Oh no! It’s another Baby Rabies storyline!” As I write this Devon Hamilton and Hillary Curtis are right in the middle of a Baby Rabies story on The Young and the Restless (March 2018).

Soap Opera Jargon Stan

January 13, 2018

On some Friday nights I post a definition of a term of jargon used by those in soap operas and fans of them. For more terms check my Soap Opera Jargon page on this site.

Stan – Stan is a term used for an obsessed fan. I started seeing it in my feed before the definition showed up and I assumed it was an abbreviation as many soap terms are (including the word soap itself), maybe for something like starstruck fan. However, according to Merriam-Webster, the term comes from the name of a character in an Eminem song called Stan. In the song, the character feels rejected by the singer and ultimately commits suicide drowning his pregnant girlfriend in a car trunk in the process. I looked up the lyrics from the reference and it’s one of the most disturbing things I’ve ever read. How can anybody think this is a good or even an OK thing to put out in the universe? Seriously I felt sick to my stomach after I read it. People not knowing the provenance have also read it as an abbreviation for stalking fan which is bad enough as it retains the violence and twistedness of the original. I’ve seen it mostly on my Twitter feed as an insult, but apparently people – guessing the meaning of the term – have self-identified as stans. Please stop using this dark term. I hope no one in soap opera fandom deserves it.

Reclaim a Role

August 12, 2017

From time to time, I post a term of soap opera jargon on Friday night. Find a complete list on my Soap Opera Jargon page.

Reclaim a Role – Reclaiming a role is a concept almost exclusively limited to soap operas, very long running TV shows, and long running film franchises. First a role must be vacated and recast. This can be a “permanent” recast or a temporary recast. The actor who had the role leaves the show to pursue other opportunities, because a contract agreement couldn’t be reached, because of ill health, etc. The replacement might be on for any length of time. Then they have to leave. The recast might be leaving for any reason or it might be things just didn’t gel and TPTB want the original performer back. In those cases, when someone takes over a role they had previously played from another performer it’s called reclaiming a role.

Soap Opera Jargon Soap Job

April 15, 2017

Every Friday night I try to post another term of Soap Opera Jargon. Find more on the soap opera jargon page.

Soap Job – On any soap opera jobs aren’t like in real life. Sometimes there will be a specific reason why someone would hire somebody, they save your life or step in at the last minute and pull something off, but mostly you just suddenly have the job TPTB want you to. For instance, Rick Bauer went from changing bed pans to having graduated med school in a matter of weeks. Mel Boudreau had suddenly magically decided that she was a lawyer too, that she had finished law school at med school AT THE SAME TIME! Normally a soap opera job will just fall into your lap and you’ll be the best person at that job ever. There are only very rare failures, like when Patty Williams Abbott tried to be a model on The Young and the Restless or when Frank Cooper’s private detective agency went bust. More commonly you get a job without any background at all and you’ll be a success. Here’s examples via  from One Life to Live Dorian Lord: doctor -> publisher -> art gallery owner -> mayor -> senator. And one from General Hospital Lucy Coe: librarian -> cosmetics company CEO -> realtor. Sadly it doesn’t work that way in real life where you usually have to have some preparation to get a job, but then again it seems like a few people do find those soap opera jobs in real life too.

Soul Mate

December 17, 2016

Every Friday night, I try to post another term of Soap Opera Jargon. Find previous entries on the Soap Opera Jargon page on this site.

Soul mate – Despite the fact they break up on a regular basis, soap couples, especially super couples, say that they are each other’s sole mates. Fans say it about them far more often. For example, “Michelle is Danny’s soul mate.” The Merriam-Webster definition in their online dictionary (linked below) is for people who have matching temperament. I’d go beyond their definition. In soap operas the term is more specific meaning that this couple was fated to be together and are the only true match for each other. You will also seen it spelled soulmate, but according to Webster the correct spelling is two words.
