Guiding Light in Italy

July 20, 2018

Today we’re appreciating Guiding Light fans around the world. Let’s visit Guiding Light in Italy.

Sentieri online is the first Italian Guiding Light internet resource. I’m the webmaster and I created it in 1996 as a classic website. Later I’ve added a mailing list that has been active till the end of Guiding Light in Italy in 2012. During the years, the website has been enriched by a Blog and later by a Twitter account and a Group on Facebook. During the last years the original website has not been updated and all the old pages are offline (but the domain name www.sentierionline.net is still working). Both the Blog and the Group on Facebook are alive. Lately I created a new Facebook page to promote both the Group and the Blog activities to keep alive Sentieri/Guiding Light in our mind.

Bauer BBQ Roundup 2018

July 17, 2018

Bauer BBQ Week drug on longer than I originally meant it to, but I didn’t have the reports from the real life Bauer BBQ done and I wanted to make sure I got those done correctly before I posted them and to share them so I got hung up. I hope you enjoyed it. I stopped working on the fanfic to finish the reports so I’ll have to get the fanfic posted after I finish it.

I hope that you have enjoyed celebrating the Bauer BBQ with me. I’m also very excited to already have four years already found for next year, but I’m always looking for more episode, more fanfic, and more memories please share.

Remember it’s never too early to start on Bauer BBQ fanfic for next year:

Real Life Bauer BBQ 2017 Day 3 Part 2

AND NOW THE BAUER BBQ

The last event was the Bauer BBQ. These comments are my own and don’t express the opinions of anyone else. It’s also fair to say that I went into this with high expectations. They were bouyed not only by what a big deal the Bauer BBQ was and by the fact that GL fans talk about hosting a version of the Bauer BBQ. I even hosted one myself. So I had lots of ideas. Also, it’s fair to point out that a lot of events suffer a sophmore slump. It isn’t the first year when you’re keyed up to make sure everything is right. It’s not after you’ve been doing things so long you can do it in your sleep. It’s sort of in the middle. I think it probably will be a better event this year — I wish I could be there. 😦

The nicest thing about it was that the actors were so happy to see each other.

Peter Simon (Ed Bauer) and Michael O'Leary (Rick Bauer) Hug

Peter Simon (Ed Bauer) and Michael O’Leary (Rick Bauer) Hug

This was the best hug, but almost without exception they all were just delighted to see each other again. “Rick” was serving as host and did the welcome to the BBQ. He also mentioned in passing that Jerry verDorn had the inside scope on the history of the BBQ so I took a chance later to snag him later and got the information for my earlier post.

Next up they announced it was time to eat.

The area where the Bauer BBQ was held was a patio outside the hotel lobby. The area was divided by a brick half wall roughly 1/3 to 2/3. The actors and the people who run the event, they call themselves angels and wore blue shirts, were in the 1/3. Everyone else was in the 2/3. Non-actor participants were strongly encouraged to stay on their own side of the wall.

My Second Favorite Soap Couple EVER!

Now I’m sure what you want to know if a member of Manny, Paul Anthony Stewart, Joy Lenz, or Nancy St. Alban came. WELL ——- they didn’t.

However, while I was eating I suddenly stopped! I gasped and I just might have clapped my hands! Who came in the door, but HOPE BAUER SPAULDING! Manny is my all time favorite soap couple – ‘natch – but Hope Bauer and Alan Spaulding of Hope and Alan on the Island fame is my second favorite couple. It wasn’t REALLY Hope of course. It was her actress Elvera Roussel, but still HOPE! She was later than the other people and looked a little lost when she came in. I don’t think she knew quite what to do. I think she saw me react to her and she waved at me. I did get a chance to go over and talk to her before they got her in the actor area.

A Panel of Light

Next up they gathered everyone up in a row and had a panel discussion about the history of the show and the current situation on soaps. I was really surprised that several people expressed the opinion that General Hospital had really hamstrung Prospect Park and in doing so had torpedoed the best change yet of a traditional soap to break free of a network. This was really opposite to what soap twitter in general seemed to think so it gave me a lot to ponder. It was also really powerful to hear the fans finally get the chance to tell the actors how much the show and their characters meant to them.

Simon’s wife Courtney Sherman who he met when they played Scott and Kathy on Search for Tomorrow was also there. She went on to be a well respected soap writer.

Trivia Contest

There was a trivia contest which I was really looking forward to, but I was kind of disappointed. I got a couple of the early questions right, but they questioned my answer whether Meta and Bill’s sister’s name was Gertrude aka Trudy. Now I have a thing about properly structured questions because of my background in education and these were very poorly organized. Let me give you an example, “What Bauer died in a mental institution?” They were looking for Hope’s mother, Julie Conrad Bauer. Now I know she did, but it never occurred to be you’d consider her a Bauer. I mean it would be exactly the same as asking what Spaulding was a cop, meaning Harley or what Spaulding was a romance writer, meaning Blake. All three women were briefly married into a family and Harley and Julie had kids within the family, but weren’t strongly connected like long term to be considered part of the group Blake was to the Marlers or Beth was to the Spauldings.

There were two guys who came from some place out east that I wish I had gotten a chance to talk to them because they really knew their stuff and somehow their brains must have worked the same as the people who wrote the questions because they nailed them all hard and fast. If I do get back to an event again I hope they are there.

And We Head to the Fireworks

Every Bauer BBQ episode ended with the fireworks. We didn’t have them, but sadly the Bauer BBQ was coming to an end. Slowly people began to drift off. I hung around pretty much as long as possible until the hotel employees started to stand there looking pointedly. I want to give a big shout out to Michelle Ray Smith (Ava Peralta). I must admit that I never cared for Ava. She messed with Sandy who I liked and broke up my beloved Cozzie just to give her something to do until they were ready for the Olivia is her mother storyline which they telegraphed from about Day 1. However, as a person she is delightful. She stayed there longer than anybody else and talked with the attendees as long as they wanted. She’s left acting, but she was utterly charming.

A couple of the actors moved to the lobby. Michael O’Leary was there and I got a chance to talk briefly to him in passing. Back when he was doing Steamboat, I did enough to promote that I won an hour phone call with him. It’s been some years ago, but he didn’t even seem to remember anything about the contest.

Jerry verDorn (Ross Marler) hung around too and he brought along his Emmy and for a donation you could get a photo with an Emmy. They are bigger and heavier than I thought it would be.

And sadly I headed off to bed, said goodbye to Elizabeth, and the next day flew home.

There were almost literal fireworks. Hurricane Nate’s remnants were rushing up the East Coast. I thought maybe I’d have trouble with the storm in Atlanta where I transferred, but the problem was actually there in New Jersey/New York. I was worrying I should have baid the extra and taken an earlier flight, but turns out I did the right thing. Earlier flights were cancelled, but mine went even through I was nervous. In fact they let one of the earlier flights that were scheduled to Atlanta about an hour and a half before leave like 5 minutes before us. It was the connecting flight in Atlanta that was a couple of hours late while the flight crew had to fly in to fly us out.

What They Didn’t Do

One of the features of the Bloss Bowling was that the stars divided so there was one with each team. I assumed they’d be split up among the tables which is pretty normal for this kind of event. They weren’t. As I mentioned I got shooed away from the one-third part of the patio and other people were too. So if they didn’t want to mix during eating what could they have done?

They could have had the actors do a pass to each table after they finished eating. They could have had the actors pass around and hit the tables or stand around the edge of the room and let the people pass. At another event I’ve done they set up the cast members for photos and then ran attendees in hit the mark took the photo got a digital copy and paid $25 for it. They could have done that.

If they didn’t want to take as much time as getting photos with attendees would take, they could of set up photos of the cast we could take. For one thing they could have picked a spot for the group photo that had a better background. In the post I did about the 2019 Bauer BBQ I used a photo from their website of “Rick” wearing the hat working the BBQ. How many got that shot? I got a version of “Rick’s” back and I don’t think anybody else even got that. How many wanted it? I’m guessing everyone who was there. Then they could have had “Ed” give “Rick” the hat. They could have had a Bauer family photo shot, a Ross and Blake couple shot, and I’m sure they could think of some more.

OR if they didn’t want to do anything extra with the actors they could have photo ops set up for attendees. Have a hat and an apron that said Bauer BBQ maybe with a Bauer Power Grill standee, have a firework backdrop, you could even have a contest where your took something – maybe homemade playdough so you could afford it – to see how many Bauer Burger patties you could shape in a minute. Stuff where we could take cool photos of each other.

And I’d have paid twice as much if Rick would have done the Bauer BBQ speech from the final year. Ed and Ross did them too. It wouldn’t be too hard to get transcript of them. I’d have done that myself if it would have helped.

Anyway from what people said who had been to both said they had a lot more detail work and cool things at the first one. I hope this one was just a somphmore slump and the future ones are great.

Real Life Bauer BBQ 2017 Day 3 Part 1

July 11, 2018

Day 3 of the Bauer BBQ event was the best. There was the Bloss Brunch, the Bauer BBQ, and quite unexpectedly got independent verification of the Bauer BBQ history my mother had told me.

A Blossful Event

Ross and Blake Marler

Ross and Blake Marler

The day started with the Bloss Brunch. The Daytime Stars and Strikes weekend had some changes to its schedule for 2017. It had started out life as an event called Bloss Bowling. Stars, at first just from Guiding Light, but later from other soaps too, would each captain a team. Fans could buy at ticket to watch or pay more to be on a team. This lead to a lot of good interactions for fans. However, as the event expanded to different events it got hard to transport fans back and forth to a bowling alley when the other events were all at the hotel. So they finally decided to faze it out and bring in other events that could be held in the hotel. Since Bloss was the start of the whole thing they wanted to make sure they still had their own special event. They introduced the Bloss Brunch to take that place in 2017.

Elizabeth and I were both really looking forward to this event and we arrived early. As in earlier than the people setting it up early. It was in a large conference room there at the hotel. I’m not sure how many people were there, but it was around 10. After the guests of honor arrived we still had to wait outside for awhile. When they did let us all in there was a really good pastry/fruit breakfast. I think you’d enjoy it.

Jerry verDorn (Ross Marler) and Liz Keifer (Blake Marler) sat at the head of the table. It was wide enough that both of them were along that edge. Elizabeth and me each scooped up the closest seats. A lot of the other fans that were there seemed less interested in Bloss and more interested in supporting the event as a whole. So we got to have a very interesting conversation on the history of Guiding Light and where the soap industry is going.

I Stepped into Springfield

Back on Day 1 of this report I told you that one of the reasons I wasn’t really into fan events as some people was that I knew the people I would be seeing the actors and while you can admire their work and actively support them, they really aren’t the family who come into your living room every day. That’s the characters and as disappointing as it is they don’t exist in this reality. So for reasons about my background I explained in my initial reaction posts I’m really not all that impressed to meet professional actors. To them it’s a job, it may be a cool job, but it’s just a job. So I really went into this experience thinking I’d get some cool photos of the actors, get to take part in the Bauer BBQ activities, maybe get some autographs (see below), and mostly talk to fellow fans. That was what I expected. That’s what happened at the Karaoke event on Friday night (except I got to sing 2 songs) and at the Venice event. That’s what I thought would go on this morning.

I was wrong.

At this event for just a couple of minutes there I really did somehow step through the TV screen and into the real Springfield. It was kind of surreal. I had seen verDorn and Keifer arrive no big deal, but when we came into the room and found them sitting there I walked towards the table. Do you know at the eye doctor when you are doing the part where they put the adjustable lens thing up to your face and the eye doctor turns a knob and suddenly one image turns into two images? Just before that your vision kind of contracts and blinks? That’s what mine did just for a second. It was like my mind couldn’t believe my eyes were working properly because this time they weren’t on a screen they were RIGHT THERE. I think it might have been that by the end their characters had become so like them, that it was like they WERE their characters – at least a little bit. This was the third event of the weekend, but somehow they seemed the most real. For a just a flash there while we were talking I honestly felt that somehow I had stepped through the TV and had some magical way ended up in Springfield. Oddly it felt really normal as well. I had heard them talk on the TV for years and often talked back to it (I tend to get a bit vocal when I watch – see my YouTube comments). Only this time they could hear me. It just was natural, but in a wild dichotomy it was also absolutely amazing.

Me and Bloss

Me and Bloss

After the vision snapped back into shape it didn’t do it again. But we were able to have a good conversation. We talked about historic plotlines and I will be quite unmodest and say they seemed impressed what I could remember. Then we talked about the current state of soaps. We talk about that a lot on soap twitter, but it was interesting to see what two people who worked in multiple soaps in the industry thought.

Autographs

When I went I carried along a brand new autograph book. I wasn’t really sure how this would work and my previous experience with TV show based fan events were centered on autographs. Standing in line, having things signed, photos, props, clothing is normally a big part of this kind of event. I know that’s often true about soap events too. I often see photos, props, scripts, etc. covered with signatures. I kind of expected that to be true here. It wasn’t. There were some people asking for signatures on scripts they had for the Karaoke night, but that was about it. I didn’t get any autographs. I could have, but it wasn’t a big deal for me. I’ve got scripts and stuff signed by them already I picked up online. The main reason I brought the book is that if they’re running you through a line you sometimes get a minute or two extra to talk while they are signing. Still there really didn’t seem to be an atmosphere for getting autographs so if that’s important to you, this might not be the event for you.

Questions

One suggestion I would have is to look and see who’s coming and think ahead of time what you might want to ask the actors. I really didn’t do this. I don’t know why not after all the time I spent looking forward to it, but I didn’t. Now though I can think of things I wish I’d have asked when I had the chance. So think now and don’t be me….I guess that’s just the excuse I need to justify spending the money to go back, right? 🙂

Tune in Tomorrow for the Bauer BBQ itself.

Prep Day

July 5, 2018

Since Matt had claimed the Bauer garage apartment, the gang of kids were all staying at Manny’s Laurel Falls house the night before the 4th. It had been a busy, noisy day. They had broken up into groups. Clarissa had been playing with Mickey. Michelle was sitting on the floor by the couch surrounded by the rest of the pack of kids. They were watching Mikey crawling around the floor. Danny walked into the room. (Note: I’m not sure that the timing of this story fits development wise, but it works well for the story so swallow if you need to.)

“What’s going on in here?” He cocked his eyebrow at the group.

Little Billy jumped up and down, “We’re having a baby race!”

Dani interrupted, “Lily isn’t a baby anymore!”

“Close enough! We’re racing Mikey and Lily and see who can crawl to the end of the couch first!”

“Lily will always win because she’s a girl.”

“She’s bigger.”

“You just said she’s a baby.”

“Cut that out.” Danny reached down and picked up Mickey. “I don’t think I want my son…”

“OUR son….,” Michelle cut in.

“OUR son to be raced like a horse.”

Hope giggled, “Daddy is afraid of horses. He didn’t want me to have riding lessons.” (Note: See A Typical House fanfic)

Dani turned on her sister. “Daddy isn’t afraid of anything!”

Danny told his children, “There are some things that it makes sense to be afraid of, but while Daddy and Mommy are around to take care of you, you don’t need to be afraid of anything. Daddy will take care of you.” He repeated to Mikey making baby faces, “Daddy will take care of you, yes, Daddy will take care of you.”

Mikey looked at him, smiled, tilted his head, and said, “Da-da.”

Danny looked with wonder at his son and then his wife who had jumped up beside him. “What did you say, Mikey? Say that again.”

Danny tried to get him to say it again. “Da-da. Say that again Da-da. Da-da.”

Mikey chewed his fist and then laughed. Then while everybody held their breath to listen he said, “Da-da.”

Everybody cheered and clapped.

*****Commercial Break*****

Meanwhile Robbie had taken Sarah outside to walk over to the falls.

“Robbie, are you sure it’s OK we’re out here? Your dad is always so strict about knowing where you are.”

“That happens when two of your kids have been kidnapped. He’s just worried about us. Over protective…but I wouldn’t bring you out here if I didn’t think it was safe.”

“I know you wouldn’t. I trust you.”

Robbie smiled shyly and “You know my folks built the house here because when Mom was a little girl Grandma Maureen used to bring her here. She used to dream of a handsome prince coming to marry her and then my Dad did. They got married here – twice. They dreamed of building a house here and they finally did when they moved back from California.”

“That’s very romantic…..Do you miss California ever?”

“No, I’m glad we moved back here. Springfield is special. I’m glad to be back here with family ….and if I we hadn’t moved back I wouldn’t have met you.”

“I’m glad you moved back.”

Robbie took Sarah’s hand and turned her to face him. Slowly, softly, sweetly, he leaned in and kissed her on the lips.

Just then Clarissa came running down from the house to tell Robbie the good news about Mikey saying his first word. At the sight of Rorah kissing her face fell, and blindly she ran back to the house. She found Michelle choking back the tears she said, “Please take me home. I just want to go home.”

Michelle hugged her. “Sure, honey, I’ll take you home.” She cast troubled eyes at Danny. Who shrugged puzzled. “Go on, take her home. I’ve got this.”

Previously on Guiding Light

July 4, 2018

Since last year’s Bauer BBQ:

Again there are other stories going on and I’m sure your favorite characters have a juicy one – please write it and share – but these are the ones that will be touched on at the BBQ this year.

Last BBQ people were concerned about how controlling Danny was being towards Michelle, but we discovered that he was just being overprotective because Michelle was pregnant. Christmas 2017 Michelle had Michael Ross Santos at the Bauer Cabin. Since she had been born at the Bauer cabin too, Clarissa was chosen as Mikey’s godmother. Rick is the godfather (another child connection and another child that Rick had that Mindy didn’t). Clarissa had taken her job seriously and had spent a lot of time babysitting. Robbie and Clarissa were getting closer just from spending time together. A month ago she made a move and kissed Robbie. He kissed her back, but then broke it off and said he wanted to just stay friends for now.

Beth had hosted an art auction as a fund raiser for the Lizzie Spaulding Cancer Foundation. One of the paintings was from the Spaulding attic. It featured a painting of a lighthouse. A woman with black hair pulled into a tight bun named Obrecht was after the painting. After a lot of excitement we learned that Alan’s father Brandon had gotten ahold of a map showing where the Germans hid the famous Amber Room. He had hidden it in the canvas of the painting. Eventually it all came out, but the expert that the FBI had brought in to confirm the find had stolen it instead, refusing to let it be returned to the “criminal government” of Russia. He’s still out there and with him probably the last chance to recover a masterpiece.

Vanessa and Billy were on the outs because he’d suggested she retire from WSPR. She took that to mean both that she was old and that she should give up on Dinah. They talked it out and Vanessa promised to think about it. Since then she SEMI-retired and after some wrangling with other contenders. Kat Speakes Frazier had gotten the job of station manager. Originally it was supposed to be a short term position while her husband Paul and the boys stayed in Chicago, but now Kat wants to stay in Springfield, will her husband follow her or not?

Matt and his wife Joni, Maureen’s old drama teacher, were separated, but reconnected. They renewed their vows in a destination wedding at the Chicago Skydeck http://theskydeck.com/ (courtesy of a partnership with Choose Chicago – their tourism bureau). They had a tour around Chicago honeymoon. In the same episode Kat and her husband Paul had a fight in front of the Chicago “bean” aka Cloud Gate. https://theclare.com/chicago-bean-history-inside-story-behind-cloud-gate/

Rocky Cooper has made a big hit with Towers. He’s still closest with Lucy, but has grown closer to Frank and has become very protective with Frankie and Hank even though he doesn’t trust Marina. None of that means he’s given up on his plan to destroy his father. It’s been slow going, but the hatred is still there and he’s still determined.

TPTB totally dropped the promising romance between Jason Marler and Molly Spaulding…. Gotcha ya! No TIIC here and the romance is developing right along. And while Jason Marler has still been struggling to find a new plan for his life and Molly has been struggling to redefine her relationship with her father as an adult they have been growing closer. They’ve been meeting at Laurel Falls with Michelle’s full knowledge and consent, but without their parents’s knowledge. If there’s anything Michelle knows about is falling in love with someone your family doesn’t approve of.

Kevin has been mostly off screen this last year. He has worked with Rick on research, but we haven’t seen him very much while he was off at college. There are rumors he’s coming on contract – will he?

Rick and Annie Dutton’s son Matt Wilson moved into the Bauer Garage Apartment. He and Rick have slowly been building a relationship. However, Matt has only given Mindy a cold shoulder. Rick suddenly having another child has been hard on Mindy particularly because this son doesn’t want anything to do with her. It’s also been hard on Jude as Rick is making extra efforts to make up from never having been a part of Matt’s life, Jude feels that he should be getting that sort of attention since Harley had taken him away to Greece. Mindy hoped that with Harley still out of the country that Jude would turn to her for parental support, but Mindy has leaned on her relationship with Rusty and Jude hostilely suspects she is getting ready to cheat on his dad.

After the November food fight at Towers Cyrus and Marina continued to finish the project they were on. They were more circumspect and formal in their relationship trying to avoid being alone together. They each have worked on reconnecting with their respective spouses, but the pull is still there.

Like other couples, other years Blake and Frank are finding themselves at odds going into the BBQ. Although they’ve been living together in a new house with a yard and raising Frankie as a team, they’ve never married. Lately Frank has been talking about marriage more and more, but Blake is resistant.

Daytime Stars and Strikes Initial Report From October 2017

July 3, 2018

October 8, 2017 I attended the second annual real life Bauer BBQ. I had an amazing time. It wasn’t overly well attended, but it was a great group of people. I was so glad to talk with Guiding Light fans and a couple of people who even knew my blog. I was especially pleased to get to meet in person my online friend Elizabeth who does the Guiding Light discussion board. I’m going to write up a full report that I’ll save for Bauer BBQ week next year and a special post on a bit of Bauer BBQ history I managed to nail down.

NOTE: For this post I’m going to use the term actors rather than actors and actresses or actors/actresses just for the flow of the post. However, I’m including both men and women in my statements.

About Me

Now, I normally don’t talk about me in this blog. My opinions and memories of the show? You bet. My family history with the show? All the time, but I don’t talk about my personal history much. That’s really not what this blog is for. However, this post I think I need to give you a little bit of my personal history for you to get the full impact of the last bit.

Normally meeting actors isn’t that big a deal for me, even for shows I watched as a kid. There is another interest I have that is connected to a TV show I loved growing up. I’m there for events that often have a TV component (now a days I’m more for the research but if the TV stuff is there how can you not take part?). I certainly don’t make all of the events, but many are within a reasonable driving distance and so I get to quite a few, so many that a couple of the actors call me by name without prompting. I also have a cousin who is an actor and a father who is in the theater. So I know actors.

Also, while I was growing up, my mom had a job which had her, among many other things, do spots on local TV shows. Back then there were a lot more locally produced TV shows and she appeared on several on a regular basis, even being a guest host of one for about 6 weeks once. She usually had us come with her on one of the shows once or twice a year. So I know a little bit of TV from the other side of the camera, I know how the camera cues work, how hot the lights are (were? have they gone to LED and are they cooler than they used to be? No idea) and as a result how cold the studios were kept when you weren’t under the lights. I learned how green screen worked at a young age and knew that one of the local anchors always went on camera sock footed for some reason I never understood.

So my point is that I’m not normally all that excited to meet actors. They have a job. A pretty cool job which they are often very good at, but it’s just a job and one that I know a little bit about so a lot of stuff doesn’t impress me that might other people. I know in most cases who I really wanted to know is the characters and I know I can’t do that, so I’m pretty calm about meeting the actors who played them.

But…..

So I surprised with my reaction to some of the Guiding Light people. Honestly I knew I’d enjoy talking with other fans which I totally did (WAVES if any of you are reading this), but I wasn’t expecting as much of a reaction as I had to the actors. It wasn’t all of them of course. A couple of them were working the room and you could tell that’s what they were doing. I certainly admired the skill they showed at it, but that’s what it was — working a room. Some of the actors seemed much more interested in visiting with the other actors than the fans. But the magical bit was at the Bloss Brunch.

It was a small group and as early arrivers me and my friend Elizabeth (of Guiding Light Central) got to sit next to Jerry verDorn and Liz Keifer aka Ross and Blake. I had an actual conversation with them about soap history (with which they seemed impressed by my recall of long ago plot) and the current state of the industry which was fascinating. But it was a bit surreal. My vision even did a funny thing for a second when I first walked over to the table, like my mind couldn’t believe my eyes were working properly. I think it might have been that by the end their characters had become so like them, that it was like they WERE their characters at least a little bit.

I don’t know if I’ll go again soon. I have a couple of other trips I want to cross off my life list that I’ve scheduled for the next couple of years (a conference I’ve wanted to attend for at least 10 years in Canada and a family trip to Disney), but I hope that I’ll be able to make it to another Guiding Light event. This one was certainly worth the trip.

Bauer BBQ Began in 1950s

July 2, 2018

An on-going project has been to nail down the beginings of the Bauer BBQ. Roger Newcomb of We Love Soaps and I have determined that the first of the everybody in town is invited Bauer BBQs was most likely in 1983.

However, when I talked to my mom about that, she disagreed.

Then, I talked to my mom, who of course had watched since she was a child, and she told me I was wrong. She told me that Papa Bauer (whose funeral from 1973 is on the Bauer Family DVD set from Soap Classics) always made a point about celebrating the Fourth of July. She said he always put up the flag (which was the traditional start of the actual Bauer BBQ episode – although the writers didn’t always remember to put it in) and usually did the Pledge of Allegiance and the family would have some kind of picnic. The Fourth of July was always an important holiday for the Bauer Family. So she thinks the actual Bauer BBQ traces its roots to these early celebrations in the 1950s and 1960s that she remembered. She does say that the Bauer BBQ being a big party everybody in town attended dated from the 1980s.

A Break in Springfield – Why He’d Know

There were a lot of changes in Springfield in the late 1970s and early 1980s. There was a large cast turn over both before and after Pam Long came in as a head writer and totally changed the focus of the soap. Jerry verDorn (Ross Marler) came on in 1979 before the change. He was one of the last people to be introduced and become part of the old soap before the Behind the Scenes changed. That’s important because he heard all the old stories and new the older players especially working with the matriarch of the soap Charita Bauer who played Bert Bauer and was for a time the true Guiding Light of the soap.

The Real Beginning

During the real Bauer BBQ last year as part of his introduction of the cast Michael O’Leary (Rick Bauer) reference verDorn talking about the start of the BBQ. I managed to get verDorn off to the side to ask him for more details. This is a paraphrase of what he told me that I wrote down as soon as I could get back to the table to sit down and write.

Jerry verDorn aka Ross Marler

Personal Interview with Jerry verDorn October 8, 2017

The Bauer BBQ was Charita’s idea. Early on they shot it in her real backyard. It was started in the 1950s but it wasn’t an annual thing. It became an annual thing in 1963 or 1964. Charita was also the force behind having a family Thanksgiving and Christmas. She felt it was important no matter what the storyline for people to stop and come together for family events.

Bauer BBQ Dates Back to 1950s

So there you have validation that my mom remembered was completely right. That they had Bauer BBQs during the 1950s and 1960s.

BBQ Prequel Michael Ross Santos is Born

July 2, 2018

Prequel Christmas Eve

The Christmas Episode – Rick has now taken over Ross’ old job of narrating the episode. – Very Short Version

“’Twas the night before Christmas and all over Springfield the snow has been falling, All over Springfield friends have been calling.”

Michelle is a couple of weeks before her due date. Michelle’s friends have been working on making sure the Christmas stuff gets done for their kids and Danny has taken Michelle away for a couple of days to make sure she doesn’t overtax with the baby coming so soon. They’ve had a lovely few days. They walked in the snow hand in hand. They made a snowman. They took a bubble bath together. They talked about many beautiful memories and how they feel about each other. And they made love, lots and lots of times. They had meant to head home that morning because it was starting to snow, but as they packed up Michelle’s water broke. Danny wasn’t going to drive her down the mountain in snow in labor. So he started calling their friends on a cell phone. It’s Christmas and people are busy doing things for the holiday. As Danny calls he gets people who have left their phones and walked off, he left messages on answering machines, when he got someone it would crackle so they couldn’t hear him. Meanwhile he’s breathing with Michelle and coaching her through Lamaze. In a very touching moment, Danny delivers the baby.

“Senora Santos, I’m very pleased to introduce you to our newest son.”

They are both smiling, laughing, and happy crying.

Suddenly people who had been getting their messages started showing up. The latest being Bill who brought Dr. Bhattacharjee up who shooed everyone away when she showed up, giving both mother and baby a clean bill of health. Blake had brought Clarissa and Michelle pulled her over and asked her to be the baby’s godmother since she too was born at the cabin. She took the baby and smiled, wondering at the baby. When she looked up the baby’s older brother was beaming at her. (That’s for the Clarissa/Robbie fans.)

*****EPISODE BREAK******

It actually took both me and the Marony story longer than we thought to have Michelle have the baby. But she finally had it December 2017. Here is the post from when I decided on the name. https://glmanny.wordpress.com/2016/07/14/stork-announces-new-baby/

A few days later…. After the New Year’s party episodes.

Danny is bringing Michelle in to their house at Laurel Falls, carrying her in his arms. He walked her over and put her on the couch. He went back out and brought in the baby in a carrier. “There we go.” He puts the carrier on their coffee table and then snuggles up to Michelle. “How’s that?”

Michelle cuddles up with her eyes closed. “Mmmmm. It’s perfect.”

“Es la perfección.” *

“I’m so glad Rick offered to take the rest of the kids for tonight.”

“I don’t know that we need ‘bonding time’ like Mindy called it, but I’m always glad to have time with you and the new little peanut.”

Michelle opened her eyes and smiled at her son. “He’s such a happy, bubbly baby.”

“He’s going to be smart just like his mom.”

“He’s going to be clever and strong just like his dad.”

“We can’t just keep calling him peanut. What are we going to call him?”

“How about William after Bill, he is my best friend. And it would be after my dad and grandfather too.”

“That’s right. He is legally William Edward isn’t he….I don’t know though. Besides your dad we’ve got Bill, Billy, Little Billy, I think there are enough Billys in this town….and if Billy is right about Danielle and Little Billy, it could get to be confusing.”

“OK, do you have a name in mind?”

“How about Ray?”

“Ray?”

“Yea, Ray. He is MY best friend and it isn’t like he’s going to have a son to carry on his name.”

“If there are too many Billys around town, there are too many Rays. I swear half the boys in Catechism are either Ray or something Raymond. Father Ray is a beloved priest, I don’t think you’ll have to worry about there not being a Ray.”

“Who then?”

Michelle looked deep in thought. “You know having this little fellow, it reminded me of when we first had Robbie. Hear me out here, but what about Ross?”

“Ross?” Danny made a face.

“I know you think about all that bad stuff about the election first, but Ross was a lot more than that. He was Dad’s best friend and he really stepped in for Rick and me when Dad was gone in Africa. When Carmen tried to frame me and then you for murder, I’m not sure we would have gotten through that if it hadn’t been for Ross. I think it would mean a lot to Blake, too. A signal of forgiveness.”

“If that’s what you want sweetheart. You’re right we do owe Ross an awful lot, but how about Ross is his middle name.”

Kissing.

More Kissing.

Michelle breaks off, “So he still needs a first name.”

“Do you have an idea for that too?”

“Nothing that I can think of sounds quite right.”

Danny sat up pulling Michelle with him and up onto his lap. “Babies do have a way of making you think back as much as they make you think ahead. I’ve been thinking back. If you asked me when I was a kid what I would name my son, I would have said Miguel. I thought my Dad was a hero, that it would be honoring my son to name him after my father. What a joke.”

Michelle moved to rub Danny’s back. “It isn’t a joke. You may not be able to look up to your dad anymore, but it inspired you to become the man you’ve become. There’s nothing funny about that.”

“I wish though he had really been someone to respect. Like your Uncle Mike. Someone stand up that we could trust Robbie with when we were in trouble.”

“That’s it!”

“What’s it?”

“The baby’s name. Fredrich-Fredrick-Fredrico!”

“Honey, we already called Robbie….”

“I know, but we could do that again. Miguel is the Spanish form of Michael, right? We could name him Michael. That way we could name him after Uncle Mike, but also remember what you used to think your father was. Rick will approve too, there’s something about Rick that makes you think Michael.”

“Michael Ross Santos.” Danny answered Michelle’s smile with a grin.” “Like I said, “Es la perfección.”

*NOTE: Es la perfección is It’s perfection in Spanish. *

3rd Annual Bauer BBQ 2018

July 1, 2018

When I found out they were going to have a real life Bauer BBQ I was estatic. It pushed me over the edge. I had been wanting to attend one of the Daytime Stars and Strikes fan events and now I just had to. Sadly I won’t get back there this year, but I hope you can.

Guiding Light’s Michael O’Leary hosts the 2nd Annual Bauer Barbeque with trivia contests, Family Feud contest, photos, autographs, Q & A on October 8, 2017 – a part of the Guiding Light Daytime Stars and Strikes for Autism weekend at the Residence Inn, Secaucus, New Jersey. (Photo by Sue Coflin/Max Photo)

14th Annual Daytime Star and Strikes Weekend October 5-7, 2018!

It’s a multiple day fan event with cast members mostly from Guiding Light with some from As the World Turns and other soaps. It raises money for the Autism Society of America. Each event requires a separate ticket although they can be bought in a bundle. If you don’t live in locally I recommend taking advantage of the hotel package at the The Plaza at Harmon Meadow. It’s very convenient to be that close, there are multiple restaurants and stores near by, and it’s easy to get to from the Newark airport. The rooms have 1 real bed and 1 sofa bed. Both were comfortable and could easily be share by 4 people, but it’s one big room and a bathroom.

Details from the Website

Tickets are on sale now for the 14th Annual Daytime Star and Strikes Weekend October 5-7, 2018!  Come join our Daytime Soap/Webseries actors and staff in Secaucus, New Jersey as they volunteer and dedicate their time to create these events for the Autism Society of America.  Click on the Events Link to discover what we have in store for you and click on the Ticket link to purchase a big BUNDLE TICKET which includes all four events and saves you $130.00.  Or if you have time for only one event, we have an ala carte option.   Help us put the pieces of the puzzle together for those on the Autism Spectrum.

*****************************************************************

We have a special block of rooms for attendees at the venue @Residence Inn: $199.00 a night – (Friday and Saturday). When you make your reservation mention: Daytime Stars and Strikes
Located in: The Plaza at Harmon Meadow
