Bad Stories Badly Done Pulling Punches

September 24, 2018

Lately I’ve been irritated by some of the bad storytelling on The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful and General Hospital. I know on Twitter I’ve complained about these stories especially making JT a domestic abuser and Hope coming back to town. However, it isn’t just that these are bad ideas, but the general way soaps have been telling them that is driving me nuts! (This was the post I was working on when I came down with the cold so that’s why I’m coming up with a long one on other soap operas to start back.)

Why These are Terrible Ideas

JT as Domestic Abuser

Domestic abuse is an important story and a story that talked about getting out of that situation should bear repeating. I have no problem with them doing a story about domestic abuse, but JT was a terrible person to choose. The entire focus of this return trip was his relationship with Victoria. Now one tweeter I respect said they were glad to see them back together. However, JToria were an unfortunate coda to JT’s story. The best JToria scenes (which were quite good) were while Victoria was in a coma — that’s not a good sign. Frankly it made no sense characterwise and I always assumed this was just one of those soap writer things. Sometimes they like to write real life couples into the show. JT was a romantic figure on the show. His and Colleen’s was the best teen love story the show EVER did. Brittany was his best friend & the show before & after his relationship with Colleen teased us with a Brittany-JT couple. I think theirs might be the longest time ship of a couple that never got a chance. JT was an idealized bad boy who did bad things, but gave it up for love. Soap twitter still tweets (or at least had tweeted) about JT-Colleen on a fairly regular basis and every couple of months you see someone talk about Brittany-JT. BUT what the heck, by all means destroy him & all that good will & interest.

Hope Returns

Let’s be honest, The Bold and the Beautiful has always been a hotbed of insest and triangles. Despite the fact that Ridge flip and flopped his way between Brooke & the other one (not a dig at Taylor she just wasn’t the only Brooke alternative Ridge flitted to), the triangle that just really ticked fans off was Hope-Liam-Steffy. They talk about it as the triangle that refused to die. Even people who didn’t like Steffy or wanted Liam or Steffy with someone else didn’t seem to be Lope heavy. We weren’t seeing “Gee, when will they ever bring back Hope?!” tweets. STILL people talking — sure, former Hope fans taking occassional swipes at Steffy — you bet. But I was NOT seeing anyone saying “Gee, I wish Hope was back here” or “if Hope was here Liam wouldn’t be talking like this” or “BRING BACK HOPE!” Or anything like that. I think people were glad the triangle that would not die was dead. They’d just spent MONTHS building up the idea of Liam & Sally. I don’t know that they were too popular, but the expectation and some interest was there. So HERE’s a great idea let’s drop all of that effort and bring Hope back & start up and strike up another chorus of “This is the song that never ends, it just goes on and on my friends….”

Jason and Jason and Sam

Let’s be honest there were problems with the story almost from when Billy Miller was cast. Mostly because a lot of fans didn’t WANT another Jason they wanted THE Jason & would automatically hate anyone else. (I honest to God don’t understand why, but the fact is undeniable.) I’ve talked about this before and again I respect their fanship and some of this is the story they wanted, but I can’t believe that most of it is. Even the General Hospital advertising can’t seem to believe they aren’t telling the stories they want to use in ads. They brought back Jason – made him Jason – broke up Drew and Sam …. and let the story drop completely. They are playing Sam with…. actually they aren’t playing Sam with anyone.

They Are Being Told Badly – What Went Wrong

The Half-Destruction of JT

In addition to the fact they put JT back with Victoria, the problem was they ignored every other JT relationship. When I think of JT I think Colleen, Brittany, Paul, Katherine, Billy, Rafe, Tracy, Reed…then a big long gap….then Victoria. Colleen was mentioned a couple of times, but what we thought were sweet scenes of fan service were actually only trying to remind why people JT hated Victor. Brittany was brought back only to emphasis how their close relationship had been destroyed. Paul had long mentored JT. It was an important relationship on the show, a defining relationship for both characters. It also was the only time we saw Paul actually get to be the father (like his father Carl) that he was meant to be. When JT came back Paul treated JT as if he was something he had scraped  off his shoe; something he wasn’t looking forward to cleaning off. Katherine who was the only one who called him Jeffery Todd also had a rather mentor/buddy type role with him. He didn’t once acknowledge her existence, visit her grave, stop & see the house & Esther or anything. Billy – OK JT and Billy left on pretty bad terms, but still he only saw him as a threat to his & Victoria’s relationship not as someone he’d had a long term relationship with. They had redefined JT & the leaks that this was a domestic abuse storyline meant that even the few good scenes were tinged with a sense of wariness and foreboding. JT was half ruined already as relationships were trashed.

We finally got to the episode that was supposed to actually be violent when JT pushed Victoria and I think the overall take on Twitter was — that’s it? Sure it wasn’t good and he left some bruises, but frankly I was expecting a lot more. The best episodes of the whole story was when Victoria broke down and told the girls about JT abusing her. It sounded horrific and hopefully encouraged other women to stand up for themselves. However, what she recounted didn’t match up with what we’d seen on screen. Constant belittling? I’m sorry truth is the perfect defense for libel. Sure he yelled a bit when he shouldn’t but honestly pretty much everything he said was a valid comment. Frankly soap twitter had said a lot worse stuff (that was all also true). The thing he was most out of line about was being jealous of Billy for very little reason which considering Victoria was involved with Billy when their relationship ended the first time and since then Billy and Victoria had reunited several times he had reason to react that way. So while it was over nothing, it was pretty reasonable. Over all it left me thinking, that’s it?

I mean if the purpose of the story as they said that domestic abuse can even happen to strong women then step one would be to do SOMETHING other than occassionally say “Victoria is a strong business woman.” Let’s face it she hasn’t been written as a strong business woman since Heather Tom played her, but the writing is only part of it. “Victoria” has what she must think of as her “Business Face” her eyes are wide open like a deer in headlights and somehow she  freezes her chin tucked up like it’s getting ready to tremble every second, but never quite does. She could have saved her company after the face mask debacle. She could have at the very least done more to try to save it other than asking one friend if they’d loan her the money and then running back to Daddy to fix it. Instead they showed her to be the incompetent JT said she was — he wasn’t being overly critical he was stating the obvious.

Then if they wanted JT to have gone nuts — make him nuts. Have him talk to Kay’s grave venting his growing frustration and hatred of Victor. Give him a shrine to Colleen. Something that WAS actually nuts. If they wanted to do this storyline they should have put the pedal to the medal and really followed through. As much as I didn’t want to see JT to hit Victoria if they were going to tell a physical abuse story he should have actually hit her at least once. In addition to the craziness they also made JT stupid as both Victor and even Victoria outsmarted him. At least well past retirement age Victor didn’t win another physical fight, but as it was JT wasn’t even really trying to kill him and if he had been he failed. As it was they ruined JT with a story they didn’t really show. JT wasn’t shown as crazy, wasn’t shown as abusive, but WAS shown as a failure who had lost or abandoned every single relationship of note and couldn’t even compotently abuse, attack, or kill someone or even do his job and was suddenly so stupid that pretty much everyone he interacted with had outsmarted him.

Hope without a Purpose

As I mentioned before there wasn’t much of a call for a return of Hope and the triangle that would not die. However, they brought her back bravely “sniff” fighting back her feelings to support Steam. For about a week. And even during her “support” she was crying and saying she wanted him. If they REALLY had to bring back Hope with this ridiculous Hope supporting Steam story really tell it.

Have Hope come back NOT having done nothing except mope over Liam(since apparently she wasn’t doing Hope for the Future since this was a relaunch in LA) , but having done something successful overrseas. Have her have a healthly relationship with some unseen man. Really work on creating a sisterly relationship between Hope and Steffy which they only very rarely hint at. Have Hope’s long distance romance fall apart as they often do. Then have Steffy sleep with Bill – keeping the threat from Sally, not Hope – and with Hope and Steffy having built a true step-sister bond now they have something at stake besides Liam’s worthless self. Hope would actually have a reason to try to be supportive instead of her saying she supported them while not so secretly wanting Liam for herself the whole time. Have the long distance break up with her, comiserate with Liam about their respective former partners, and they’d organically fall back together. Get Liam and Hope together and then bring in the long distance boyfriend and let that and the stress of mundane life pull them out of this romantic haze they’ve been living in where they were only ever with each other. Let the boyfriend jog Liam’s memory of Hope’s capers and eventual marriage to Wyatt. Liam will find himself rankling under Hope (after all I don’t think anyone will disagree that Hope is clingy and demanding and Steffy accepted whatever Liam threw out her without a complaint “Steffy never objected when I….”) and that should remind Hope of his character’s lowest point where he suggested Hope abort her baby if she wouldn’t leave Wyatt and come to him with the baby. Now wouldn’t that make this same storyline play out with a lot more interest?

The Problem With JaSam and DreAm

As I mentioned the last time I talked about Jason that the key to a successful return is the second story. Jason not only really hasn’t had much of a second story, they really didn’t finish the first one. They were moving towards reuniting JaSam, including breaking up DreAm, and instead they just dropped it. I mean it’s nice he wants to give her space, but she’s barely been in the same room as either “Jason.” They should be playing them thinking of each other, looking longingly across the room. In other words all the stuff they were doing before DreAm broke up, maybe more of a distance, but they should definitely be playing it. They’ve barely seemed to even think of each other.

Now I’ll be honest, I’ve seen Steve Burton in two roles now and I honestly have no idea why anyone thinks he can act. CBS Daytime did a comedy bit one time where Kay was replaced with a paper bag puppet. If they did that with Jason, I don’t know how many people would really notice if they didn’t announce it — BUT he does have a whole bunch of fans and I get they want him here and I respect that.

However, I truly can’t believe that THIS standing around ignoring Sam is what they want. Sure they’ve slipped him back in exactly the same place with Sonny and Carly as he was before, but for the most part he’s been supporting and he’s supposed to be the lead. I would think they’d want a passionate reunion, romance, family building with their kids, SOME KIND OF INTERACTION, but almost squat. There has been more romance in the extras GH has put out on its website than in the actual show.

Sam has completely lost her connection to Drew, also. They haven’t seen each other or thought of each other. In fact, for someone whole built a pretty great life with Sam, at the suggestion she needed to think again about where she belongs, drop kicked her out the door and has had one entire relationship and is now being reunited with his “Chilly” partner from The Young and the Restless without so much of a backwards glance. He at least has story, but moving on so quickly (can you say rebound, Kim? I knew you could) and now breaking up and moving on again has undercut both what Drew had built up as DreAm and his potential as a romantic lead. Romantic leads are supposed to be people you dream about having relationships with, not one who might drop you in a hot minute.

There needs to be SOME movement here. AT LEAST show some longing, dreams, etc. with BOTH Jasons, what do they think they’re doing?

What Do They Think They’re Doing

That’s pretty much what’s going on all the soaps. People not only doing stupid stories, but they are doing them too quickly and too shallowly. If you’re going to tell a story, take the time and depth to really tell it. Soaps today are pulling their punches. That’s the most dangerous story at all.

Not Safe For Daytime: The New Yorkers

July 18, 2018

Enjoy a soap opera parody by the cast of The Bold and the Beautiful, doing some over the top characters of New York with really thick New York accents.

First up the commercial which yes, if they can do burger porn with women, why not with a gorgeous man.

They didn’t do many episodes, but they are fun if you know the actors and I think might be fun even if you don’t.

Another installment….

A blooper reel…..

The channel also includes parodies and comedy challenges for other daytime actors. Take a look!

7recently responded to a question about whether The Bold and the Beautiful still had a fan club when their website says they don’t. “Sadly they don’t technically, but they do still hold fan events, and keep fans up to date to other B&B related things via the fan director Cathy Tomas. Email CathyT@bbmail.tv to get on her email list.”

There is a profile about Scott Bryce (Craig Montgomery #1, both chronologically & in greatness, during falling in love with Sierra, etc.) in the July 25, 2016 issue of Soap Opera Digest. It includes a shout out to his father Ed Bryce who starred as Bill Bauer on Guiding Light. There is an old photo of both Bryces in with the story. Bryce says he is “still friends with so many. I’m in touch with Brian Bloom [Dusty Donovan #1] and Tamara Tunie [Jessica McKecknie]. I consider Tamara a sister. I just had dinner with Finn Carter [Sierra Walsh Montogmery #1 who with Bryce was the Craig-Sierra supercouple] when I was out in Los Angeles. What I think about when I think about those days is not so much the scripts or the scenes or the work as much as the family. We had a real family.” He also says he got to be on The Facts of Life (his character married Jo in the send off) because the stars were all As the World Turns fans and watched on their lunch break.

According to the March 5, 2018 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth, when Ian Buchanan as James Warwick on The Bold and the Beautiful was chained to the wall by Shelia, they really chained him to the wall. One time on a break he was stuck because they couldn’t find the keys.

Fake Books Only on Soaps March 2018

March 29, 2018

I was looking for a title of a fake book on Guiding Light and much to my surprise I couldn’t find a list. So I decided to create one and update it as I found more. I previously put together individual lists for Guiding Light and The Young and the Restless, but this is all soaps. Check my lists here of books from several soaps and please give me suggestions for updates if you know of any I’ve missed on any soap.

General Hospital

Love in Maine by Connie Falconeri aka Kate Howard/Molly Davis. Molly wrote the original novel, but Connie stole it and edited it to make it steamer. It was published in March 2013 and the truth of the authorship came out later that year.

Lust for Death by Lucy Cole.  Lucy came to town as a quiet librarian. She was involved with Kevin O’Connor who used her for an alibi in his murder case. After he dumped her, she wrote a tell all book for the money.

Man Landers is an advice book based on a popular advice blog of the same name. Nathan West became the front man, but the book and blog were actually written by nurse Amy Driscoll. Amy used the money from it to pay her veteran brother’s medical bills. It was published in 2017. The title is a play on Ann Landers who wrote a long running advice column in direct competition to one written by her twin sister Abigail Van Buren aka Dear Abby.

Katherine Moore Shepard (Kay) Chancellor’s tell all autobiography (from her own point of view of course which means a lot of distortion) was called I’m Going to Live ‘Til I Die and was co-authored with Amber Moore. Of all the fake books on Y&R this is the one I wish I could read most (except Bumpy the Camel). Jeanne Cooper, the actress who played Katherine, did do a life story for real including backstage stories about her time on the soap. It’s called Not Young, Still Restless: A Memoir.

Victor Newman was the subject of not one, but two biographies that only exist in Genoa City. Victor’s often referenced unauthorized autobiography is called Ruthless: The Victor Newman Story, and was written by Leanna Love under the pen name Nora Randall. His friend Douglas Austin was working on an approved biography, parts of which Leanna lifted and Austin never finished his book after that scandal hit. After Leanna got to know Victor (before he found out she had written Ruthless) she felt she hadn’t done him justice and published an authorized and more balanced biography under her real name Victor Newman – The Man and the Myth by Leanna “Love” Randolph. Scott Granger started work on a second official biography in 2017, but the storyline was scrapped while the book was still in the research stage. Like Jeanne Cooper, Eric Braeden who plays Victor has written his real life biography named after Victor’s favorite catchphrase, I’ll Be Damned: How My Young and Restless Life Led Me to America’s #1 Daytime Drama.

While Nina Webster worked on at least one other book and did the initial draft for a movie based on Kay’s book Live Until I Die, I have only found the title of one of her published books. A Cry in Thin Air was based on Nina’s introduction story where she was pregnant by a juvenile delinquent named Jimmy and the home for pregnant girls she ended up in Geona City actually ended up being a front for a baby stealing ring (Rose Deville, criminal extraordinaire). Nina spent years hunting for her first born son in real time and eventually he was revealed in the person of federal officer Ronan. Ronan had read the book after discovering his true identity (a nifty feat since his adoptive parents were unaware of Nina’s name and identity and it didn’t appear on the paperwork) and used the information in the book to track down his biological father who had died of the same rare disease Ronan suffered from until he was cured by a transplant from his half-brother via Nina, Chance.

Traci Abbott published at least three novels. Echoes of the Past was a novelized account of her life of living in her sister Ashley Abbott’s shadow. Her second novel was called Epitaph for a Lover. Traci was working on a third novel when she moved to New York. No further progress has been reported on air and the title for the third book wasn’t included in the reference I found. Just recently I found another title. I’m not sure whether this was the third book she was working on when she moved to New York or if this was in fact a fourth novel, but thanks to E LeBrun we know there was a book by her used on a set called On the Wings of Idiots. Still waiting for a Work In Progress mention guys!

Lori Brooks wrote two known novels. The more well known is In My Sister’s Shadow which was a lightly veiled version of her story of her life with her famous pianist sister. The second was called Naked at Dawn.

There are also children’s books only for the children of Geona City. The children of Genoa City love the children’s series Bumpy the Camel. The author is still turning out new books in this wonderful series that has sold out on first day offerings at the local Geona City bookstore. The author does not live in Geona City.

UPDATED March 31 2018: I spotted a mistake in formatting and a typo after I published it and just fixed both.

Couple Codes Update January 2018

January 18, 2018

Here’s my latest update on creating a list of couple code aka smoosh names aka the names people create for couples by combing their names. For example Manny is Michelle Bauer Santos and Danny Santos and Marony is Marah Lewis and Tony Santos. I’ve posted the list from other soaps before, but I’ve been trying to post quarterly updates to help get suggestions who I’ve missed. I’ve added more since last time, but please check for your favorites (or even the not so favorite couples you can remember). I’m a long way from having all of them for all soaps here. I think I have finally collected most of the Guiding Light couple codes, but I’m adding those below and am now branching out to collect other soaps. The shows and the names are listed in alphabetical order. All couples are eligible to be included if they are on a daytime soap opera and have a commonly used nickname or code.  I threw a few primetime ones on at the bottom too, just for fun. This list is by no means complete at this point, but I found with my work with the Guiding Light list that people tend to respond more after they see what you have.

I also have reserved a spot on the the list for anyone with a nickname that might be confused with a couple code. For example, on the Guiding Light list I’ve included Cleva for Clone Reva. So here are the couples whose name I’ve remember or had suggested to me so far. If you spot I’m missing one from any daytime soap, please let me know on Facebook, Twitter, in the comments below or by e-mailing me at Robansuefarm@hotmail.com

Restaurants Only on Soaps

September 13, 2017

As part of my on-going creation of a directory for all things soap, I’m adding a list of restaurants. Consider this a mid-point draft that I’ll hope to update. Check out my list and thanks to those who contributed.

Guiding Light

Company was the casual family dining next door to the Reardon Boarding House. It went through several name variations over the year, but it was always popular, especially with hospital staff since it was directly across from Cedars Hospital.

5th Street Diner aka Cooper Diner aka Wheels and Meals Diner was on 5th Street, a mom and pop family place for diner food.

Lakeland Country Club was the fashionable place for big events. You could do casual fine dining in the restaurant, but normally it was a place for special events.

Len’s Ice Cream Parlor aka Murray’s was briefly a popular spot in town for ice cream which was retconned back to Michelle’s childhood.

Little Havana was a Cuban restaurant favored by the Santos family. It was never shown onscreen.

Millennium was a nightclub that also served as a bar close to the new Millennium.

Towers was a fine dinning restaurant located on the top floor of Blakewood Towers. It was known for its view on the city. It did both dining in and had a very active to-go business.

Wired For Sound was a disco restaurant in the early 1980s.

Bauer BBQ mentioned UltraMart supermarket and Grohmans (spelling?) Delecatesent.

As the World Turns

Al’s Diner – Al’s Diner, currently owned by Henry Coleman, has been a major part of the series for years, with many characters having either worked there when they were young or when they were down on their luck. The menu has changed a lot (Carly brought in a line of more healthy foods, Janet brought in some Italian influence, Vienna brought in Scandinavian).

Mona Lisa’s aka Diana’s – Diana McColl was Whit McColl’s daughter, Lisa Miller et al’s step-daughter. During Diana’s unsuccessful time in Oakdale she started a restaurant on a yatcht. It was known as Diana’s. When Diana left town, step-mother Lisa bought the place and renamed it after herself – complete with a painting of herself as Mona Lisa in the foyer.

All My Children

The Serving Spoon was kind of like a gourmet goodie shop. Characters would always go there to pick up food for their picnics.

Thanks to Sadie Soaper for helping with this section.

The Bold and the Beautiful

A fancy restaurant with an outdoor seating area, patronized by the Forresters, is Il Giardino.

Café Russe is another five star restaurant.

Insomnia aka Dayzee’s is a coffee shop. It was run by the Spectra family. Later it reopened as part of Stephanie Forrester’s campaign to help the homeless as they were involved with both the running the cafe and a payment system where you paid what you could. Dayzee, Donna’s biological son’s wife who Stephanie befriended at a homeless shelter, took over after Stephanie’s death and rechristened it Dayzee’s. Maya and Rick later got involved there when she sang there and he was working some volunteer shifts.

Bikini Bar  is an outdoor bar with a pool near the beach. Most people wear swimsuits there.

*Thanks to  and  for help with this section.

Days of Our Lives

Brady Pub is a typical bar with food which is a family business of the Brady family who often end up working there or living above it.

On Days of Our Lives Sonny’s club is called Club TBD. It started as a place filler calling the club To Be Determined, but they eventually grew to like it and kept it. Read more about it in the Oct. 14, 2014 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Chez Rouge was Maggie Horton’s fine dining establishment. When Maggie was assumed dead in one of Days everybody’s dead, but not really storylines, the Salem Stalker, Bonnie Lockhart married Maggie’s husband Mickey Horton and took over the restaurant changing it to a country western bar named Alice’s.

Blondie’s – no addition information.

Thanks to Keisha Fishback, Lori Besserer for helping with this section.

General Hospital

Floating Rib aka Jake’s – a bar formerly owned by Luke Spencer.

Gene’s Place  is a bar/restaurant combo that first aired in 2016.

The Haunted Star, originally a Cassadine yacht, is now a nightclub run by Lulu Spencer-Falconeri.

Kelley’s – a bar

Metro Court Restaurant located in the Metro Court hotel and is owned by Carly and Olivia Falconeri. It’s a posh place where they have both business meals and celebrate special occasions. It has an active bar.

Perks is a coffee shop chain.

Ruby’s – no additional information

Triple L – where we first met Lucy.

Thanks to , Lori Besserer and Traci Fenton for helping with this section.

One Life to Live

Bonjour Cafe was in Paris, Texas when Vicki Lord ended up and met future husband Charlie. When the local cafe burnt down Charlie built a replica in Lanview.

Thanks to Priscilla Jeneen Hunt for helping with this section.

Ryan’s Hope

Ryan’s Bar – the central location on soap was this bar run by the titular family.

Young and the Restless

Crimson Lights Coffee Shop – came in when Nick was SORASed and has been a major force and setting on the show ever since. First owners weren’t in story, but then Sharon and Nick bought it. They eventually sold it to Kevin who sold it to Dylan. When Dylan went into witness protection and left town, he returned the coffee house to Sharon. After Sharon and Nick’s daughter Cassie died they named the outdoor patio Cassie’s Corner complete with her portrait. This is now only mentioned when current story involves a reference to Cassie and her painting is normally covered up. It is located in a historic district in town that was once under threat from redevelopment. Previous stories have disagreed over the building is owned by the coffee shop or not.

GCAC aka Genoa City Athletic Club – has a restaurant and bar as part of a club that also includes a hotel, event/conference facility, and gym facilities. It has been run by Gina Roma and Lily and Cane Ashby.

Gina’s – was run by Gina Roma (she anglicized from Romalotti) who was Danny Romalotti’s sister. She served as maitre d and was known for her sensible advice and friendly ear. The specialty of the house was lasagna. Gina also sang at the club. Gina’s was a staple of Geona City for many years until Kevin Fisher burnt it down in an attempt to kill Colleen Carlton (Brad and Traci’s daughter) which proved unsuccessful thanks to Colleen’s boyfriend JT Hellstrom heroically pulling her out of the flames. After it burnt down she managed the restaurant of the Geona City Athletic Club but gradually faded out of the show.

Gloworm – Gloria Fisher and her husband Jeffery Bardwell ran this restaurant named in honor of Gloria. It was sort of a middle of the road restaurant definitely above a diner, but not fine dining.

The Saigon Shack – was a Vietnamese restaurant run by Jack Abbott’s lost love Luan who he married and she later died. It was mentioned on screen in 2017.

The Underground is a bar opened by Nick Newman after one of his defections from Newman. Nick’s son Noah and assorted young people worked at the bar which also featured live music including Noah himself and Reed Halstrom. The bar is literally underground and has a cramped feeling. It never has many customers. When Nick was dating Avery Bailey Clark (Phyllis’s sister), he gave her a reserved booth.

Thanks to Gwen White and Brandi Nicole Anderson for helping with this section.

Thanks to Priscilla Jeneen Hunt for several name suggestions for different soaps.
