Odds and Ends 53

January 4, 2019

While looking for Guiding Light information, I sometimes find things that I think are of interest relating to other soaps. This collection of Odds and Ends related to various soaps that someone may want to know some time. Look for another odds and ends post soon.

The May 14, 2018 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth includes an As the World Turns photo in the “All-Star Scrapbook.” This time it features Michael Park (Jack Snyder of CarJack fame) talking about his character’s adopted son J.J. J.J.’s actor is the son of Lisa Denton. Denton had played Betsy Stewart on there in the early 1980s. She was the 5th Betsy and the one right before Meg Ryan took over. Sadly it doesn’t give an update for what Denton is doing today and a quick search doesn’t turn up anything. I was really sorry when they SORASed J.J. and Parker Munson Snyder (then Giovani Cimmino). It’s really hard to find one child that can act. ATWT somehow had found 2 truly first class child actors with a perfectly natural beyond sibling rivalry as each was not quite Jack’s son. However, they threw away both these talented actors and the rivalry they’d spent a lot of screen time setting up.

Read set side secrets from The Bold and the Beautiful in the April 2, 2018 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

In 2001, The Bold and the Beautiful because the first soap to be transmitted simultaneously in English and Spanish. Read about it in the Jan. 9, 2017 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

Patty Weaver‘s character Gina Roma was a long mainstay on The Young and the Restless. She was the sister of Danny Romalotti, a part time singer, and ran her restaurant Gina’s. After Kevin Fisher tried to kill Colleen Carlton by burning down Gina’s (Colleen was trying to save her best friend Lily Winters from then online predator Kevin, this was JT’s most memorable hero moment as he saved her), she took over as manager of the new Genoa City Athletic Club. Sadly she disappeared from the show shortly there after. Weaver‘s husband was Jerry Bim, an early writer on Y&R. He died after a protracted illness. Still under that grief Weaver has moved on from acting to art. Read all about it and see photos in the January 8, 2018 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea Newman, The Young and the Restless) met her childhood heroine. Aileen Queen (Annie movie 1982). See a photo in the Jan. 9, 2017 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

Catch up with Emily O’Brien (Jana Fisher, The Young and the Restless), Dan Wells (Stan, Sami Brady’s alter ego, Days of Our Lives), and Michael Swan (my beloved Duncan McKendrick of Duncan and Shannon on As the World Turns, Adam Alexander – Sally Spectra’s long lost husband – on The Bold and the Beautiful). About As the World Turns castmates he said, “I talk to a lot of people on Facebook. I see Martha Byrne [Lily Walsh Snyder] when she comes out to the West Coast. Me, Kin Shriner [Scotty Baldwin on General Hospital], Martha, and Maura West [Carly Tenney Snyder on As the World Turns] try to have little reunions now and then. It’s always good to see them. Maura is still a phenomenon! What a career she has had, wow! The last time we went to dinner, Bill Fichtner [ex-Josh Synder aka Lily’s biological father] showed up. Ellen Dolan [Maureen Reardon Bauer on GL] and Kim Zimmer [Reva Shayne Lewis on GL] showed up. It was great! We had a wonderful evening. That happens maybe once a year or so.”

See a family reunion of the Abbott family of The Young and the Restless with Dina, Traci, Ashley, Jack, and even the deceased John as the appeared on Hallmark’s Home and Family where “John” ‘s wife is a host. See a couple of photos in the May 14, 2018 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth. There is an interview with Marla Adams (the former Dina Abbott) about her returning to play the Alzheimer story in the January 8, 2018 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

The Hardys played a critical role with General Hospital and were the main family when the soap started. Much like Emily Stewart and her biological daughter and legal sister Allison were the dying embers of the once dominant Lowell family on As the World Turns, Scotty Baldwin and his sudden son Franco are the remains of the once proud Hardy family on General Hospital.

Soaps Greatest Loves 2018

December 17, 2018

Periodically soap magazines come out with special editions. Sometimes they’ll forgettable sometimes – say like the tribute edition to As the World Turns after it was canceled – they’re a must have. I think this one is one that you’ll want. I don’t know that all the couples are ones I’d have chosen, but they are really nice approximately 4 page write ups of the couples included. Plus 2 page photo spreads of other big couples. It’s 100 pages.

Cover of Special Issue with Jarlena featured

I’m sure what everyone wants to know if Manny is one of the couples. — Sadly, no. They weren’t chosen for a write up, but they do get a two page spread of photos from a photo shoot I don’t recognize. So at least they aren’t common. All three photos are of the Stenz version of Manny with Paul Anthony Stewart (Danny Santos) and Joie Lenz (Michelle Bauer Santos #4).

The couple that got a write up for Guiding Light was Jeva.

If you can’t find a copy of the newest special edition in a store near you, click here to order it online —>  https://bauer-media-group.myshopify.com/collections/soaps-in-depth/products/soaps-in-depth-special-soaps-greatest-love-stories

Some taken from various articles in Daytime TV Super Special, vol. 1, no. 2, 1975. Find brief descriptions of some of them and which networks they were on with basic set up and cast. Couple Codes Update Aug 2018

August 1, 2018

Here’s my latest update on creating a list of couple code aka smoosh names aka the names people create for couples by combing their names. For example Manny is Michelle Bauer Santos and Danny Santos and Marony is Marah Lewis and Tony Santos. I’ve posted the list from other soaps before, but I’ve been trying to post quarterly updates to help get suggestions who I’ve missed. I’ve added more since last time, but please check for your favorites (or even the not so favorite couples you can remember). I’m a long way from having all of them for all soaps here. I think I have finally collected most of the Guiding Light couple codes, but I’m adding those below and am now branching out to collect other soaps. The shows and the names are listed in alphabetical order. All couples are eligible to be included if they are on a daytime soap opera and have a commonly used nickname or code.  I threw a few primetime ones on at the bottom too, just for fun. This list is by no means complete at this point, but I found with my work with the Guiding Light list that people tend to respond more after they see what you have.

I also have reserved a spot on the the list for anyone with a nickname that might be confused with a couple code. For example, on the Guiding Light list I’ve included Cleva for Clone Reva. So here are the couples whose name I’ve remember or had suggested to me so far. If you spot I’m missing one from any daytime soap, please let me know on Facebook, Twitter, in the comments below or by e-mailing me at Robansuefarm@hotmail.com

Not Safe For Daytime: The New Yorkers

July 18, 2018

Enjoy a soap opera parody by the cast of The Bold and the Beautiful, doing some over the top characters of New York with really thick New York accents.

First up the commercial which yes, if they can do burger porn with women, why not with a gorgeous man.

They didn’t do many episodes, but they are fun if you know the actors and I think might be fun even if you don’t.

Another installment….

A blooper reel…..

The channel also includes parodies and comedy challenges for other daytime actors. Take a look!

Odds and Ends 51

April 9, 2018

While looking for Guiding Light information, I sometimes find things that I think are of interest relating to other soaps. This collection of Odds and Ends related to various soaps that someone may want to know some time. Look for another odds and ends post soon.

Check out a round up of how soap actors memorized lines in the July 25, 2016 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

7recently responded to a question about whether The Bold and the Beautiful still had a fan club when their website says they don’t. “Sadly they don’t technically, but they do still hold fan events, and keep fans up to date to other B&B related things via the fan director Cathy Tomas. Email CathyT@bbmail.tv to get on her email list.”

There is a profile about Scott Bryce (Craig Montgomery #1, both chronologically & in greatness, during falling in love with Sierra, etc.) in the July 25, 2016 issue of Soap Opera Digest. It includes a shout out to his father Ed Bryce who starred as Bill Bauer on Guiding Light. There is an old photo of both Bryces in with the story. Bryce says he is “still friends with so many. I’m in touch with Brian Bloom [Dusty Donovan #1] and Tamara Tunie [Jessica McKecknie]. I consider Tamara a sister. I just had dinner with Finn Carter [Sierra Walsh Montogmery #1 who with Bryce was the Craig-Sierra supercouple] when I was out in Los Angeles. What I think about when I think about those days is not so much the scripts or the scenes or the work as much as the family. We had a real family.” He also says he got to be on The Facts of Life (his character married Jo in the send off) because the stars were all As the World Turns fans and watched on their lunch break.

On General Hospital Drew Cheetwood and Derk Cheetwood (Milo and Max respectively, both Sonny’s goons) worked with their cousin Tyler Christopher (Nicolas Cassadine). The relationship gets a shout out in the January 22, 2018 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

According to the March 5, 2018 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth, when Ian Buchanan as James Warwick on The Bold and the Beautiful was chained to the wall by Shelia, they really chained him to the wall. One time on a break he was stuck because they couldn’t find the keys.

Kristoff St. John (the legendary Neil Winters on The Young and the Restless) has been having personal issues since his son’s suicide. It recently got bad enough he was gone from the show and there were many online rumors. Read his statement in the December 4, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Networks Promoting Soaps 1972

February 21, 2018

Networks not supporting soaps is a long story to soap fans. We know there was a long period where soaps funded the primetime shows with very little effort to protect or promote them. Here’s an interesting account from the October 1972 issue of Daytime TV.  This is part of a roundup article called “The Latest News” by Paul Denis.

The Latest News

For years and years, the three TV networks [the three major for profit broadcast networks, CBS, ABC, NBC- ed.] have put virtually all their promotion efforts into nighttime shows, leaving the daytime serials to almost shift for themselves. But attitudes are changing. CBS, for instance, is trying to make up for past errors. It brought some 60 newspaper TV editors to New York and wined and dined them and stuffed them with demonstrations on its eight daytime serials. CBS vice president Fred Silverman even made a speech urging daytime dramas to have their own Emmy Awards which would be “Passed out in a prime-time evening telecast, just like the other Emmy Awards.” Well, better late than never! And we’ll wait and see what CBS does about it.

Couple Codes Update January 2018

January 18, 2018
