Guiding Light Cast Round Up 66

June 2, 2014

This is the sixty-sixth in an irregular feature where we will report updates on what cast members of Guiding Light are doing now. I’m playing catch up on some soap magazine news. So as a reminder you can buy back issues:

The February 24, 2014 issue of Soap Opera Digest includes a photo round up of characters who left soaps in pairs during the month of February including a photo from Phillip Spaulding and Beth Raines Spaulding 1991 Valentine’s Day Wedding.

The May 12, 2014 issue of Soap Opera Digest featured an article looking back at 1997. It gives highlights of story and casting for all the soaps, including Guiding Light. In addition it gives this behind the scenes notice “GL marked its 60th anniversary (from its radio debut) on January 25 and its 45th TV anniversary on June 30. Paul Rauch succeeded Michael Laibson as executive producer: Michael Conforti, Victor Miller, and Nancy Williams Watt were out as head writers, replaced by The City‘s James Harmon Brown and Barbara Esensten.”

The June 2, 2014 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth did a 10 years ago flashback article featuring Tammy Winslow trying to decide whether she should go all the way with Joey Lupo. They also did a round up of famous summer storylines, including the famous first Four Musketeers summer storyline with photos.

Rebecca Budig (Michelle Bauer #3, part of the Messe pairing) announced she is pregnant by her current husband Michael Benson. Read more and see a photo in the June 2, 2014 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

Daniel Cosgrove (Bill Lewis #4, part of the wonderful Bizzie pairing) announced they’ve named the animal shelter in Branford, Connecticut after his grandfather Daniel Cosgrove I for his work with the clinic since retirement. He’s still active at 97. Find out more about it at the June 2, 2014 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth. Find a feature article on Cosgrove in the April 21, 2014 issue on CBS Soaps in Depth.

Rick Hearst (Alan-Michael Spaulding #3) created a hilarious commercial for his upcoming personal appearances in June 2014.

Hearst is interviewed about his General Hospital return in the Feb. 24, 2014 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Denise Pence (Katie Parker, Floyd’s sister and Hillary Bauer’s best friend) published another blog entry.

Victoria Platt (Vicky Spaulding, Alan and Alex’s half-sister Victoria Spaulding’s daughter, from Brandon’s island marriage after he had died on screen once) is married in real life to Terrell Tilford (David Grant #3, brother to Gilly, son of hospital administrator Charles, friend to Bridget, coupled with Vicky Spaulding). They are expecting. See a photo of the expectant mother in the Style Squad section of the May 23, 2014 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Hayden Panettiere (Lizzie Spaulding #2, the little girl who survived cancer and killed Beth’s abusive boyfriend) got positive reviews all around (except from me) in the Style Squad roundup in the December 2, 2013 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Emme Rylan (previously credited as Marcy Rylan) (Lizzie Spaulding Lewis #6, part of the wonderful Bizzie pairing) was featured in an interview about her The Young and the Restless and General Hospital switch in the October 10, 2011 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.
There is a photo of her at work with her 2 year old son Levi in the February 24, 2014 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Lauren C. Mayhew (Marah Lewis #4 –  her recast scuttled the somewhat interesting crush on inappropriately aged Jesse Blue. Her most memorable storyline she partnered with Brittany Snow‘s Susan right before the Nursery Rhyme Stalker mass kidnapping) was featured in the interview in the Oct. 10, 2011 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth. Besides continuing her acting career, she has released singles like “Look Inside” on iTunes, and served as WWE ring announcer. Her web series Breakfast Burrito is no longer active.

Terrell Tilford (David Grant #3, brother to Gilly, son of hospital administrator Charles, friend to Bridget, coupled with Vicky Spaulding) has been cast on The Young and the Restless as Barton, the so far never seen sudden husband to Leslie Michaelson. He’ll first appear on Fri., June 13, 2014. See a photo and an update of what Tilford has been up to in the June 2, 2014 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

Ian Ziering (Cameron Stewart, one of the original Dinah, Alan-Michael, and Harley quad) participated in the 5th Annual Motorcycle Awareness Ride on Long Island. See a photo in the June 2, 2014 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

Zach Conroy (James Spaulding #2, part of the lovely Jaisy pairing) shared the story of his 16 hour Dubai to Los Angeles flight with food poisoning. Read his account and see (a healthy) photo in the June 2, 2014 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

Lawrence Saint-Victor (Remy Boudreau) tells about how he came to collect Superman memorabilia in the June 2, 2014 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

Mosley reported on buying her first house on the East Coast. Read her report in the April 21, 2014 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

Kassie DePaiva (Chelsea Reardon, Maureen and Nola’s little sister) when faced with her favorite gym closing, rounded up a bunch of her soap friends to buy it instead, check out a photo shoot/tour of  Solid in Palm Springs, California in the June 2, 2014 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

Jeff Branson (Shayne Lewis #7, the last one) reported the birth of his first son Van James Branson during April 2014. Read more in the April 21, 2014 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

recently tweeted about John Wesley Shipp (Kelly Nelson part of my beloved Kelly and Morgan) “: Original ‘Flash’ star John Wesley Shipp has joined the cast of the CW remake:  ”

Roger Howarth (Jory) was the subject of a feature interview in the December 2, 2013 issue of Soap Opera Digest. The article includes photos of him with Paul Anthony Stewart (Danny Santos) and Laura Wright (Cassie Layne Winslow) who overlapped with him on Loving.

Grant Aleksander (Phillip Spaulding #2, the one we knew most of the time) joined a bunch of other soap stars the day after his 53rd birthday to tape on location at Blondie’s on Manhattan’s Upper West Side for the online soap Tainted Dreams. The shooting was August 7, 2013 aka National Lighthouse Day. See photos in the September 9, 2013 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Aleksander gives Hope

August 25, 2013

Grant Aleksander (Phillip Spaulding of Guiding Light) was recently interviewed by Carolyn Hinsey of Soap Opera Digest about the online soap Tainted Dreams. During the interview talk turned to Paul Rauch (former Guiding Light executive producer) who Aleksander is loosely basing his Tainted Dreams character on. Aleksander mentioned that at the time of his death earlier this year, Rauch was working on bringing Guiding Light back when his death disrupted the project.

Since the interview appeared, speculation that the project could still succeed even without Rauch‘s participation have been everywhere across the soap press and blogs. This is a particularly complete example, many were much shorter but it appeared almost everywhere:

Rauch passed late last year:

Without someone already well known to them pushing it, this particular effort is probably dead, unless it’s already been picked up by someone he was doing business with, but it is encouraging to know P&G were at least willing to listen. Also, it might explain further inaction on P&G’s part. If we learned anything from the General Hospital/One Life to Live crossovers, it’s that soap characters might move from competing business to competing business, but in the real world it isn’t quite so easy.  When Soap Classics closed down I posted a “What We Have Learned” post and I wrote in part:
“I haven’t given up hope and a new project might be even better. There is no guarantee that they will follow up and there may be further loss of episodes if this project doesn’t move forward quickly, but there are as many good options for the future as bad ones and I’m betting on P&G to go for the money.”
Read the rest here:

I’m still betting on P&G to go for the money in some way at some point. Overall All My Children and One Life to Live have been successful. The episodes of Guiding Light/As the World Turns, etc., P&G already paid for are sunk costs. They’ve already paid for them and get no income off them sitting in their vault. To not find a way to exploit those previous episodes should be beyond the pale for business executives. They should be itching to pick up the $50 bills of profits they have currently left lying on the ground (to reference a frequently used economic simile). I have hope that eventually episodes both old and new will eventually reach the market, while there is a definite gap between those who would watch for free on YouTube and who would be willing to pay, I think the market is deep enough to succeed. Despite its problems, the very fact that Soap Classics existed at all shows that the P&G isn’t so bound to their being right to cancel the soaps (which I think they were trying to prove to the exclusion of anything else for the first couple of years surrounding cancellation) and that means they are interested in making money off them, if at all possible. As long as they believe that it is, it’s truly a matter of time, but the exact format and if it will be good news like when Doctor Who rebooted or bad news like the Dukes of Hazzard movie – who knows? I think overall this is good news. For right now, keep showing interest in your soaps, on blogs, on Facebook, on Twitter, and on Google Plus and keep them convinced there is money to be made.

Paul Rauch Passes

December 11, 2012

Paul Rauch was a former executive producer of Guiding Light and his death was announced today. The following alone is a reason to mourn the man.

Paul Anthony Stewart (Danny Santos) posted on Facebook:

“Very sad to hear about the passing of Guiding Light Executive Producer Paul Rauch. A great man, a brilliant producer, and a friend. He was the mastermind and motivating force behind the best of Danny & Michelle, and gave me the wonderful opportunity to portray Danny Santos, one of the most exciting characters I’ve ever created. Rest in peace, Paul.”

@JordiVilasuso  (Tony Santos #1) tweeted: “RIP Paul Rauch. Gave me my first big break on Guiding Light and was a champion for his actors and the shows he produced. You will be missed!”

Never Ending Story 1999

September 14, 2011

A BBC production called Never Ending Story looks at soap operas and Guiding Light in particular in 1999. Below find a brief summary of the parts, followed by my comments in italics, and then the clip. The links are posted by

Her description is as follows:
“This program was made in 1999, long before the cancellation of Guiding Light. It features interviews with cast members Kim Zimmer and Jerry VerDorn, soap journalist Mimi Torchin, and the people who were running GL in 1999: Executive Producer Paul Rauch, Head-Writers James Harmon Brown and Barbara Esensten, and Proctor & Gamble’s Executive in Charge of Production Mary Alice Dwyer-Dobbin. It begins with a brief description of the origin of soaps, then of GL specifically, and then discusses the daily routine of making the show, the changing media climate, and the future of soaps (obviously, as it was in 1999).”

Soap Opera history is traced back to serialized magazine stories and comic strips. Great tribute to Irna Phillips. “Soaps are a family heirloom is passed down generation to generation.” “Empathy is big part of soap opera and provide conversation about social issues.”
Enjoy the recipe for a soap opera. I appreciate them taking the history beyond radio and TV. Wonderful tribute to Irna Phillips. That’s an interesting way to put it. “Guiding Light is the longest story ever.” Zimmer is right: “Guiding Light is an heirloom that gets passed down. Soaps never assumed women would have time to only sit and watch. “Soap audiences are very smart, very hip, you can’t fool them.” 9:00 setting up a set. “Storylines should last 3 to 6 months.” Mimi Torchin interviewed. Secret to soaps that problems are overlooked once you care about the characters. The Selena-Buzz-Ben scene is a pretty important. 12:00 Jerry verDorn gives a run down of typical shooting day. “You can control the characters’s lives, but real life has a nasty habit of intruding.” “There is dead dead and soap opera dead.” I thought Ghost Reva was more of a physic projection rather than a figment of imagination. (Part 1)

Soap opera audience impacted by O.J. Simpson Trial and later news dramas. Analysis of stories through soap opera format. Facing the clone.
I hope that as soaps switch mediums again, New York can once again become a center. More Kim Zimmer interview. Interview with Mary Alice Dwyer-Dobbin. 3:00 impact of OJ Simpson Trial “It was more soap opera than soap opera.” Analysis of major news stories in terms of soap opera structure, including Clintons. “Clinton saved by expectations set up by soap operas.” I really didn’t like the clone storyline after Joie was gone the 1st time, but on a second watching on YouTube I was won over, while not a great plot, Zimmer amazing. I mean watch her eyes as she plays the two characters they are honestly completely different. It’s amazing. “We’re all slaves to the Youth Demographic. A false god I believe.” “The production techniques may vary, but the forms will stay pretty much the same.” (Part 2)
