Henry Chamberlain’s Funeral February March 6 1996

May 31, 2018

I started going through and breaking Bandstand Mike‚Äôs episodes into dates. This run started on December 20, 1995. Our last post in the series ended sometime in late February with Nick McHenry and Susan Bates’s wedding.

Today we say goodbye to one of the best characters Springfield ever produced, Henry Chamberlain. He was Vanessa’s father, Bill’s grandfather, and H.B. Lewis’s best friend. God bless Henry and his actor William Roerick.

Henry’s death was precipitated by Roerick’s death in real life which happened in a car crash a couple of month’s before his on screen death. http://www.nytimes.com/1995/12/07/nyregion/william-roerick-stage-actor-82.html

Henry, Little Bill, and Vanessa 1992

Sadly the initial scenes of people finding out about Henry’s death were during the missing episodes on this YouTube channel. If I find them elsewhere, I’ll come back and link them in.

Probably Thursday, February 28, 1996

Henry is being buried from Woodhill Funeral Home.

Dinah finds Roger in their apartment. Dinah is furious because Roger had her credit card canceled and the clerk cut it up in front of everyone. Roger tells her (not too gently I think) that her grandfather Henry has died (I think it’s to remind people because they’ve been focusing on other stories, but now it’s time for the funeral.)

Matt to Vanessa (showing once again JUST how little he understands her): “It’s OK to cry.”

Vanessa (with determination): “I DON’T WANT TO CRY. I want to celebrate my father’s life.”

(You know who wouldn’t have tried to get Vanessa to cry at the beginning of a hard day in public, yep, Billy.) Quinton comes in mistress in tow. He acts normal, but Vanessa tears into him for degrading both their father’s memory and their family by dragging his mistress along.

Distractingly we also have the Marah took Annie’s things revelation going on in a B story. ūüė¶

Reva finally gets around to letting other people know Marah is found.

Quint tells Vanessa that he doesn’t see how Jessica is all that different from Matt (which is kind of point Quint), but Vanessa points out that she was divorced before she started with Matt (which is point Vanessa). Matt steps in between and tells Quint to back off in defense of both Vanessa and his aunt Nola. This is sad because once upon a time it would have been Quint being that gallant, but Quint is right about Matt having a chip on his shoulder.

Nola asks where Dinah is and Vanessa says she doesn’t know where she is she hasn’t been able to tell her. Which I call foul. These are rich people with business interests all over. You can’t find someone with news like this you hire someone to hunt them down. Dinah could have easily missed the funeral.

Rick continues to talk Abby down with no luck. Josh, Annie, and Reva separately try to deal with the Marah issue.

Roger tries to comfort Dinah as she is upset about Henry (I think this is bull, but I’m not sure 100% is because Roger really does feel a lot of pain at losing people). Hart shows up at Henry’s funeral and talks to Vanessa. Hart offers to go find Dinah to tell her, but Vanessa tells him no. Hart offers instead to put in writing that he won’t try to change Peter’s custody arrangement other than getting to know the boy because it seems like it is what’s best for Peter. Vanessa is floored. We get a nice off camera Ross-Ed best friend bit.

Ed: “When Rick was a teenager he [Henry] helped Rick get his Eagle Scout rank.” Which is pretty cool and something I didn’t know about Rick.

J follows Jessica (Quint’s mistress) outside.

Rick is still trying to talk to Abby who gets so mad and hurt at what he says she yells “NO! NO, I don’t love you!”

Rick is blown away that Abby spoke. Abby must have been teased about her voice because she didn’t want anyone to hear it.¬† Annie and Josh talk a little about Cross Creek. He tells Annie the part that she wants to hear, but can’t bring himself to tell her the rest of it about how he’ll always love and want Reva. We get a flashback of the important part of Cross Creek which we missed during the clip gap where we lost the days.

Quint takes a quiet moment at Henry’s coffin reflecting on their relationship. Quint describes Springfield then as small, but full of hope. (Quint crosses himself so he must be still practicing Catholicism.) We then flashback to Quint and Nola’s wedding reception, mainly taking off in a hot air balloon at the end.

Coming fresh off that memory Quint says he wants to apologize to Nola, but Nola’s not having any of it she’s ready for a divorce.

[And right here they had a chance for some Emmy winning stuff a good man who got messed up with all the midlife crisis fears that led him to do some terribly hurtful things. Brought up short by his father’s death he…. but instead they went with Nola becoming obsessed by Buzz…. yes, that’s what I said Nola becoming obsessed by BUZZ. I know none of us could believe it then either.]

Dinah arrives at the church and is devastated.¬† Hart and Roger follows her in. Meanwhile, back in the Bauer kitchen, Abby and Rick come to a sort of truce. Annie and Josh rush into Reva’s where Annie wakes a happy Marah and Jeva share a charged moment.

Friday, March 1, 1996

We get pretty much complete redo-s of the last section of yesterday’s episode slightly expanded. Nola is telling Quint off and that she wants a divorce, Dinah faints after approaching the coffin and when Hart goes to help her, Roger goes for Hart. Annie and Josh are ecstatic to find Marah safe. Marah doesn’t realize how worried everyone was, but refuses to go home because she came here to make a deal with Reva.

Reva asks for another minute alone and tells Marah that she should go on home and the adults will figure it out. Quint asks Nola to wait until later. He claims Jessica understands him in a way Nola doesn’t anymore. Nola says she can’t deal with this anymore and walks off leaving a shaken Quint behind as Jay tells him to be happy he’s gotten what he wants. Meanwhile Roger, Hart, and Matt tussle over Dinah who asks for both Roger and Hart to be kept away because she can’t deal with either of them now. Vanessa and Dinah mourn. Vanessa confirms Henry died in his sleep. Little Billy joins in telling Roger, Hart, and Ross to back off. Now isn’t the time. Alan and Amanda arrive (which despite Blake’s snipping is fitting, Henry helped build Spaulding).

Vanessa is worrying about Henry’s bowties (he always wore one). She can’t throw them out and she doesn’t know who to give them to. Dinah realizes just how hard this is hitting her mother. Matt wants Amanda to leave, but again this is nothing to do with him. Amanda wants to pay her respects to Henry and Vanessa. It was Matt that did something Vanessa was mad about. Amanda didn’t even tell Vanessa, she just threatened to so Matt did. Alan wants to know what Amanda is in trouble for. J lays into Quint. Josh and Reva are upset because they want to be together, but Reva thinks Marah needs Annie right now.

Josh is pushing Reva to tell Annie the truth about him. Buzz shows up and Reva uses him as an excuse. Buzz figures out Josh and Reva have reconnected, but Reva says from her prospective if she takes back Josh she loses Marah. Hart and Roger have another fight.

Hart and Roger continue to fight. Ross and Amanda have a grown-ups conversation. Quint’s chippy wants to leave because she is bored. Quint tells her he has to stay. Vanessa realizes that Dinah doesn’t know Quint and introduces them. Quint charms Dinah saying how much Henry had told him about her. Quint also reveals he had a letter each for Vanessa and Dinah that Henry had written the day before he died. Dinah reads Henry’s letter which tells her to use her funds with noblis oblige. Dinah looks up and tells Roger she’s going to get her money back and do something good with it if it’s the last thing she ever does. Marah tells Annie and Josh that she wants them to stay together. Reva shares her worries with Buzz.

Reva tells Buzz that she can have him if she wants him. Annie is sure of her and Josh’s relationship, but Josh holds back.
Alan: “Ross is a good enough lawyer, but what is WRONG with all you women.”
Alan and Amanda have a conversation and then Matt and Blake do.
Dinah to Roger about his attempt to use Jenna to snatch Spaulding: “Bleed him dry, Daddy. I want you desperate and penniless, broke and alone. I want to ruin your life the way you almost ruined my grandfather’s. It’s the least I can do.”

Ross reminds Roger he needs to be in court to account for Dinah’s funds tomorrow. Hart was still outside and Alan tells him he found something to come by the house after the funeral. Reva asks Buzz to leave so she can think.

Monday, March 4, 1996

Matt ineffectually reaches out to Vanessa again. Dinah is ready to put the screws to Roger whose cooked books aren’t ready yet. Josh shows up to say a word to Henry, but is wayleighed by an angry Alan.

Reva finds the Springfield Journal on her doorstep with an article about Marah and a flower blooming on her rock wall. She’s determined to spare Marah. We get a different flashback to Cross Creek. This bit is where Reva thinks she’s helping Annie to help Marah by pretending Josh still wants Annie makes it worse. Leo shows up and tells Roger he needs to buy him a couple of days to cook the books.

Reva comes up with a desperate plan to keep Marah’s love. Buzz objects at first, but goes along. There are a few more upsets and short conversations including Ed and Rick (about him having slept with Blake) and Bill and Michelle about how Vanessa and Bill are handling grief. Bill is annoyed when Michelle ends their conversation by focusing on Jay. They begin the funeral proper with Ross starting the eulogies.

Ross’ Eulogy

Ross talks about going to Henry saying he wanted his teenage daughter (Vanessa). That was the relationship that produced Dinah. “I learned more from the man than I could ever imagine. First and foremost I learned how special a daughter is to a father.”

Quint’s Eulogy

“I didn’t know my dad growing up, but later when I did get to know him I often rejected the advice he gave me and always at my own peril. Yes, I’ve made mistakes and I’ve paid for them dearly. My father said something that I will always remember. Whenever you don’t know what to do next, always do the next right thing. Henry always knew what the next right thing was. It was his rarest of gifts. I will miss Henry, my father, and all of us who are left behind by his passing will be diminished.” – Honestly I love and respect Henry more than I can say, but he made enough bad mistakes that I can’t say he always knew the next right thing.

Dinah’s Eulogy

Dinah tells of how he was always right and she hated it. She breaks down. “I hated everything he ever said to me because he was always right. He always knew me. He understood.”

Nola’s Eulogy

“You should have seen the color of red that Henry turned when he found out that I was marrying into the family fortune. Then at some point he realized that wasn’t what I really wanted what I wanted was… So we became friends and he became like a father to me. At some point we realized that we shared something in common and that was that family was first no matter what and the rest would take care of itself. Oh, Henry you will live in my heart forever. God bless you.”

Bill’s Eulogy

Henry found me on the porch with a girl. “Young lady, when I was your age,¬† girls had chaperones so that character had a chance to develop before nature could extinguish all hope.”

Josh’s Eulogy in honor of H.B. who was still alive (but unable to come)

“I asked him though what he would miss the most about Henry and he said long summer nights sitting on the porch in a couple of rocking chair side by side ruminating about good liquor, a good hand of cards, and good and not so good women. My daddy, H.B. Lewis, tossing back a bourbon and branch and Henry Chamberlain sipping cognac. Telling lies to each other a 7 year old wouldn’t believe. He also said the only good thing about Henry passing on was that when it was his time to go Henry will be there waiting for him sitting on a porch, a couple of rocking chairs side by side. And he truly believes that because he said if Henry Chamberlain don’t get into heaven, ain’t nobody getting in to heaven because Henry Chamberlain is the finest man I ever wanted to punch in the nose.”

Roger goes to speak, but Vanessa stops him.

Vanessa relents and lets Roger speak.

Roger’s Eulogy

“Henry was the most worthy adversary I ever faced. He was a giant among men.” – I think Roger sincerely means that. “I never told him this, but all my life I looked up to him. I wanted to be like him. I know there are many of you in this room who would say that if that was my goal I failed miserably.” – I think that was all for Dinah. “I did learn the most valuable lesson in my life from him. I learned what really matters and it sure isn’t power or money, it’s family and friendship. At the close of the day that’s all that counts.” – I think Roger half means this. He never could make up his mind which was more important power and money or happiness and Holly. He flip flopped his whole life and I could sincerely see him taking Henry as a model for that he just doesn’t mean it in Dinah’s case.

Matt’s Eulogy

Quint’s mistress does try to say something nice to Nola who rightly cuts her down with a stare. Jessica complains about it to Quint who finally has had enough at least for now and tells her to give it a rest.

Meanwhile Reva is still trying to convince Buzz of her plan. Buzz is right it’s a terrible plan. It ends up hurting a lot of people unnecessarily and doesn’t truly help Marah like she thinks it will. However, Buzz, who after Jenna is a true romantic is confident that if she begins this plan and he agrees he’ll get her to fall in love him. Fat chance. I mean personally I like Buzz a lot more than Josh who I have strong reason to dislike and fully understand the hurt Josh has made Reva feel over the years and I STILL would say fat chance even if I didn’t know what happens.

I’m sorry storyline and her absence from the canvas meant that Jenna couldn’t be there. She and Henry really were like daughter and father. Reva continues to push Buzz to go along with her plan. Bill tells Vanessa that he’d talked to Billy (who is in jail) and Vanessa is so happy to hear news of him and even his distant support. Meanwhile Matt, ever the junior partner in their relationship, is shut down in his attempts. Nola needs help with her coat. Quint steps up and is still blown away by Nola’s announcement she will divorce him, but Nola is still determined. Back at the wake at Matt and Vanessa’s house (later Josh and Reva’s house after theirs burns down). Ed tells a story of Henry chastising a surgeon. Roger fakes an attack in front of Dinah. Annie notices that Josh is growing distant. He says he’s fine, but they should leave. The rest of the people take this as a cue. Ross leaves earlier than he would like to keep his and Dinah’s court date to demand Roger return her funds. Left alone Vanessa starts to open her letter from Henry. (Just as a side note the best letter left behind for a love one EVER was the one JR left SueEllen on the Dallas reboot. Search for it. If you knew the classic show, I defy you not to cry buckets over it. )

Reva finally convinces Buzz to go with her plan. That was a nice addition the heaven sent message to Nadine. Josh tries to call Reva, but she doesn’t answer. Vanessa reads Henry’s last letter. I love real family photos on set walls. That’s a great one with Bill and Henry. Henry tells Vanessa how much he loves her, how important she is to him, how much he wants her to make him some tapioca pudding.

“You were such a tiny one the terrible day when your mother died. I remember wondering how in the world I was going to do right by you. Somehow through God’s grace we’ve done right by each other.”

He also says that he’s glad she’s found happiness, but even though he uses Matt’s name the man he describes sounds more like Billy.

“Darling one, you know this, but I must say it again. I treasure your life. In the darkest times it has strengthened me. It has made me incalculably rich. You are my pride and my joy….” Vanessa breaks down totally.

Tuesday, March 5, 1996

In a scene I’m sure Mattessa fans will enjoy, Matt pledges eternal love. Annie is very excited to be home to the Land of Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams. Josh isn’t excited by the idea to get home. Alan frantically tries to reach Reva and Hart arrives at a terrible time. However, Alan calms down enough to tell him about Roger. Meanwhile Roger arrives at Cedars and Lillian and Ed spring into action.

This segment starts with a commercial themed to match their current cross soap ad campaign which featured a 1940s detective looking man giving you all the scoop telling us that this Thursday and Friday the soaps will be off for the national basketball tournament. I never enjoyed those days taken by the tourmant, but now they soaps are cancelled I look at them as more episodes stolen from us and hate them. ūüė¶

Alan has a source that got him Roger’s financial records which show that he started making transfers from Dinah’s account to a numbered Caymen account within 10 days of getting the power of attorney. Ed is concerned with Roger’s condition and seems to think that he might need heart surgery. Dinah is upset and when Marcus asks why she says she’d just as soon not bury anyone else today. Neither Annie nor the kids understand why Josh seems upset about Annie saying she was moving home to the Land of Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams.

Quint returns to the Reardon Boarding House. He says when he was coming in he heard a noise and really expected to see Bea at the table (which would be a good trick as the set had changed). Nola says she does too sometimes and Quint continues to talk about their wedding. Quint asks about Bea today and Nola says she calls her every Sunday. (Which is good to have news of Bea, even if it is vague apparently she’s still alive and presumably still living with Tony and Annabelle.) They continue talking about their life together. Quint apologizes for hurting her. Vanessa says she isn’t giving up on her relationship with Matt. Vanessa says she didn’t listen and just climbed back up on that pedestal.
Matt: “That’s where I wanted to keep you. Right there where you belong. You’re my Contessa.”
Again another scene I think Mattessa fans will enjoy, but I think shows exactly how wrong for each other they are. Annie asks Josh about what the status is with Reva and tells him she would be lost without him. Once again Marcus and Ross think Roger is up to something, but this time Dinah believes Roger.

Marcus and Ross bond over wanting Dinah to be OK and suspicion over Roger. Leo Flynn shows up and Ross seems to think he’s in on it too. Roger is begging Dinah to stay with him. Alan tells Hart that it’s clear Roger stole, but he has no evidence that would bust Roger’s cover story. Then he says while he is on their side he isn’t going to directly help. Quint tells Nola she can always count on him if she’s in trouble, but Nola isn’t biting. Quint tries to make some small amends, including a check which Nola rejects.

Alan shows up at Reva’s house and finds Reva gone and Josh already inside. Alan takes a couple of jabs ending with suggesting he left Annie behind to babysit while he came to Reva. No, even Josh wouldn’t do that he says, but he did. Annie and Marah and Shayne make a baking soda volcano. Josh and Alan spar about their mutual manipulation of women and who is the better man.¬† Alan thinks Reva will eventually pick him over Josh. Josh is equally confident he has Reva back. Dinah goes to find Ed and Leo steps into Roger’s room.

Roger: “What I won’t do for the love of a good woman.”

Leo: “Don’t you mean for the love of a good woman’s money?”

Roger: “Yea, sometimes I get those confused.”

Roger confirms he isn’t sick. Leo says he’s glad it isn’t like the car crash which he used to connect with Holly last year, but Roger laughs.

Roger: “Dinah is definitely NOT worth dying for.” Roger laughs again.

Hart shows up at the hospital and Dinah blames him for Roger’s attack. Hart tries to tell Ross about what he found out through Alan, but Dinah won’t let him talk. Ross urges Dinah to maintain her anger at Roger. Matt and Vanessa talk about her grief. Vanessa recaps Henry’s great goodbye letter. Quint and Nola talk some more. Quint wants Nola to say she isn’t angry with him anymore. Josh and Alan continue to lock horns.

Annie, Marah, and Shayne work on the rather lame baking soda volcano. Hold the phone! All the way through his growing up years Shayne was a star Lacrosse player with 0 words about baseball so it’s a shock when he suddenly wants to play professionally and he gets scouted, but right after the volcano goes off and Annie asks if he thinks he’d be a good scientist he says “I want to be a baseball player.” So I guess he had at least thought of it once. Josh finally gets tired of waiting for Reva at her house and leaves. Quint takes leave of Nola. Quint went in to kiss Nola goodbye, but she pulls away. Leo confirms that Roger is OK. Dinah goes outside to smoke and then Hart grabs her.

Wednesday, March 6, 1996

We pick up the tags from the last episode. Matt and Vanessa are hugging and declaring their eternal love. Amanda stops by Vanessa and Matt’s house. She wants something to keep her quiet. Alex is glad Hawk calls from his investigation of Amanda in California. She wants a progress report, but Hawk is living high on the hog. Hart tells Dinah that Roger has been robing her blind and he has proof.

Marcus shows up and is furious that Dinah is leaving with Hart. It would have been better for her to ask Marcus along. Ed is demanding answers as to why Roger’s heart attack appears to be drug induced. Griffin shows up and offers to help Marcus. Marcus is resistant, but finally gives Griffin a chance. Hawk continues with his LA get away while covering to Alex. Amanda wants to buy Matt and Vanessa’s silence.

Amanda lets Matt and Vanessa know if they keep quiet so will she. If not she’ll show people her ledger with proof of what Matt did. That is just cruel though Vanessa. Amanda wishes them a nice life. Vanessa: “I don’t think anybody is EVER going to love YOU.” Which knowing Amanda’s background, how he adoptive mother tortured her, that’s just cruel. Fletcher and Holly are preparing for Lamaze class. A yuppie couple comes up to Holly and tells her if she doesn’t get the baby enrolled in preschool now she’ll never make it to an Ivy League school. Roger sneaks another pill to keep his heart unsteady. He gets the pill bottle put away, but drops a pill on the floor. Griffin goes into Roger’s room. Griffin futzes around the room and then tells Roger to get back at him for setting up Griffin’s son Marcus he was going to organize the union people at WSPR and shut it down. He then turns off Roger’s heart rate monitor. A bunch of hospital staff rush in and take Roger to another room. Marcus is delighted at the chance to search Roger’s room. Hart brought Dinah to the Jessup Farm. He gets out the information packet that Alan gave him from a drawer.

Marcus finds Roger’s pill stash. Griffin recognizes the pills from his Vietnam protester days. They gave you heart fluctuations that would get you rated 4F (unfit for service). Hart shows Dinah the withdrawls from her account and deposits in his Cayman Island account. Alan had let Amanda reset the combination for the safe. Alex struggled to get inside. Amanda catches her at it.

After catching Alex trying to get into the safe, Amanda decides to go ahead and burn her ledger for her escort business in California. Fletcher tracks down Holly who is upset because the future of their Down Syndrome baby is unknown. Dinah finally realizes that Hart is right and Roger stole her money.

Fletcher suggests that they call the baby Maggie after Holly’s middle name. He thinks it reflects what a strong and resilient girl she will be. Matt is still upset by Amanda’s visit, but Vanessa turns his mind to other things and he carries her upstairs to her and Billy’s bedroom. That is a pretty cool way to get into the wall safe. It isn’t just the painting that swings out, it’s the whole panel the painting hangs on! Meanwhile Amanda makes the classic Bond villain mistake of not sticking around to make sure the job is finished and assumes the engine of destruction will complete its work. Alex sneaks out of a secret passage.?! Let’s use that some more please! And manages to save something out of the flames. She quickly calls Hawk with the alias Mandy Harper. Having heard the background to Hawk’s end of the call Alex decides to fly west herself to oversee his efforts.

After the Lamaze class Fletcher and Holly seem much happier. Vivian (Griffin calls her by her self-anointed African name she used in the movement) comes in to the class and has a supportive conversation with Folly. Then Griffin walks in and finds her alone in the room. Hart continues to feel guilt over using Dinah and is drawn to her. Roger makes up a cover story to search for his missing pill bottle – he doesn’t find it. Meanwhile across town a sunglasses wearing Dinah is looking to buy a gun.

Nick McHenry and Susan Marry We Learn Henry Is Dead Feb 19 1996 and Some Undated Days

January 25, 2018

I had a long gap I had to figure out, but picking up the continued story with episodes broken into dates here we are again. I started going through and breaking Bandstand Mike’s episodes into dates. This run started on December 20, 1995. Our last post in the series ended February 16, 1996.

This is a wonderful week with some pretty terrific stuff every day. Annie is forced by the custody battle to move back to her old apartment. Some of her friends show up to throw her a “Reva will get hers” party. Rick tells Josh some hard truths about Annie including that Rick wants her back. Alex is gleeful at the news Alan and Reva broke up. Buzz is trying to cheer Reva up and Josh has an evil plan to handle Reva, but will it backfire? Between the stock he gave Amanda and the $10 million ransom that was lost Alan doesn’t have a lot left. A-M invites him back to Spaulding, but Alan is afraid that he wouldn’t be happy at Spaulding at less than the presidency and the temptation to take it back might be too much. Reva disrupts the Spaulding dinner in an effort to try and get Alan back, but no dice. We get a romantic and pretty hot LAM sequence. Nick McHenry and Susan Bates marry at the Spaulding Mansion. Everyone receives word that Henry Chamberlain has died. Michelle had a fight with J and now wants to leave town rather than see him again. David and Bridget argue over her being hung up on Hart and he confesses he loves her. Hart has decided to stay in town and expose Roger’s misdeeds towards Dinah, asking for help from Alan and Gilly. Meanwhile Roger desperately struggles to cover his embezzlement. Quint comes back to town bimbo in tow. Marah reacts badly to the custody fight and runs away. The entire 5th Street neighborhood comes together in an effort to find her. Griffin helps out and Gilly begins to think maybe she was wrong about him. (Nope. She was right on the money after her mother talked to her.) Marah shows up at Reva’s house and intends to stay there. She has brought along stuff she stole to remind her of Annie.

Monday, February 19, 1996

Ed takes Annie back to face her apartment and leaving the Land of Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams. The Spauldings are gathering and Alex is gleeful that Alan says he’s done with Reva. Buzz is trying to get Reva out of her funk. Josh has some evil plan to handle Reva.

Reva asks Buzz for a job which considering her previous jobs doesn’t make a lot of sense, but OK. ¬†Buzz agrees despite the fact that Elanie grabs him and drags him away saying they don’t have enough work for it — despite the fact they are normally short handed. Josh asks Rick to check in on Annie and Rick explodes that he can’t do that. But that just goes to show how thoughtless Josh is.

The party is a great idea. I get why Lillian would be there, but why Vanessa? Sure she’d like to complain about Reva and for some reason despite her troubles with Billy Vanessa stayed close to Josh, but Annie? During the girl talk Lillian sort of admits to having a thing for Ed and when Annie suggests wrapping herself in plastic and making a move on Josh. Vanessa says tinfoil is better because it tears easier. I kind of love that. Rick tells Josh some hard truths. Vanessa says her cook made the dinner so they must have one and Annie and Josh have Mary as a nanny. The Spauldings are enjoying a great dinner.

Alan is called from the dinner table and says he lost all $10 million dollars and with the gift he made to Amanda of Spaulding stock he doesn’t have much left. Alan says he regrets neither the gift of stock, nor using the money in an attempt to get Alan-Michael and Lucy back. Alex is shocked. Alan-Michael invites Alan back into the company. Alan refuses saying he learned he wouldn’t be happy in a supporting role and he doesn’t intend to take the presidency back, but he knows the temptation would be too much at Spaulding. Everyone is surprised. Reva bursts in.

The Spaulding family run out leaving Alan and Reva alone. Reva tells Alan the custody battle news and asks Alan to come back. Alan says no, he thinks she’s still hung up on Josh. Reva gets mad he won’t come and takes off. Rick and Josh face off over their treatment of Annie. Rick is living in the Bauer garage apartment. Abby walks in on the conflict.

Rick confesses he still has feelings for Annie to Abby. Considering the future, watching Rick explain divorce to Abby is heartbreaking. Just heartbreaking.

Apparently A-M and Lucy have adopted a dog named Faith that they hid under the table at the Spaulding dinner. A-M and Lucy talk about their wedding. Lucy wants a big wedding, but A-M says it doesn’t matter because he sees them as already married from their lighthouse ceremony. It’s just lovely. Elanie tries to talk sense to Buzz about Reva which doesn’t stick. Then we have a lovely Alan and Alexandra sibling talk. “To moving forward for all of us.”

We have a pretty romantic and hot LAM love scene. Rick continues to squirm under Abby’s questions about Annie and Hawk shows up encouraging Rick to make a play for Annie tonight. Meanwhile the girls night is breaking up with Lillian leaving Vanessa to do the dishes. Annie is convinced Josh is somewhere with Reva — which against all odds he actually is.

Tues., February 20, 1996

We’re getting ready for Nick and Susan’s wedding in the Spaulding Mansion. The guys are picking out a playlist and even Alan gets roped into the set up. Susan and Lucy have a you’re like a sister talk.

Amanda is expanded to the like a sister group and helps Susan get ready. Nick gives Alex a thank you with a subtext that I’m leaving soon, but she doesn’t get it. Susan’s AIDS support group shows up.

Nick McHenry and Susan Bates get married in the Spaulding living room. It’s a simple service and the guests stand as the bride and groom meet before the fireplace. Only a handful of people attend and they have only one attendant each, Alan-Michael Spaulding (the groom’s cousin) is the Best Man and Lucy Cooper is the Maid of Honor. The head of the AIDS group gives her away.

Nick and Susan announce they aren’t going to come back after the honeymoon, but intend to take a world tour exploring the world on an open ended trip. “For as long as we have.” Susan is diagnosed with AIDS, a step worse than her previous diagnosed HIV. The last time we heard from them on the show she was still alive.

Extra Day 1 РFebruary 1996???

We seem to have skipped at least one episode somewhere. It seems like maybe more than one. That means I can’t establish the dates for the next few episodes and we missed some kind of important scenes. Part of why I was going through these particular clips was because with a solid starting date (the very special Christmas episode) I could give an exact date for the episodes. This stops that, but I should be able to pick it up again on March 1st.

Matt has told Vanessa how he’d be tied up with an escort service Amanda Spaulding ran out in California. ¬†We must have already heard that Henry Chamberlain (Vanessa and Quint’s father, Nola’s father-in-law to whom she was quite close, Dinah, Little Billy, Anastasia and J. [Anthony James]’s grandfather, also an “adoptive” father to Jenna Bradshaw) has passed on or the audience wouldn’t already have understood he was dead when Nola starts talking to J about him in the past tense. Henry was a great guy. I’m sorry he’s gone. While I was working on my WSPR news stories, which I hope to be able to do more of sometime, I did a post that tied into the end of the series, the building of Henry Chamberlain Elementary. ¬†In the actual series they only say they are building a new elementary school, but since they didn’t name it, I did.

We’re at WSPR with Roger and Gilly (who is a reporter/producer there) and Ross arrives to gloat that Roger needs to hand over Dinah’s money (which Roger actually has embezzled). Over at the Bauer House Ed seems in a very good place, but sadly as always with this version of Michelle she is being dopey. She’s following her normal storyline procedure I describe in the linked post above – this time with her adoptive cousin Jay. I know – ICK! right? The fans at the time thought so too and the pairing was dropped.

Roger tries to divert Ross from the divorce by painting Hart as a worse threat to Dinah which Hart overhears. Michelle continues to say she wants to leave town and is teenage hysterical.

J regrets taking Henry for granted the last time he saw him which was very natural. They discuss Quint coming back. David and Bridget come in and are sorry, but in what world were they anything to do with Henry? Matt fills Vanessa in on Henry’s death.

Matt expects Vanessa to put aside the fall out from his revelation until dealing with Henry’s death is over. Vanessa needs time to process and is having none of it. Good for her especially when Matt tries to lay a guilt card on her – “I need you too. I loved him too.” I mean self-centered much? Roger uses Henry’s death as a lever to get rid of Ross and delay handing over the accounts. He still hopes he can delay long enough to win Dinah back and keep control. Bridget and David talk about fixing up the boarding house and her obsession with Hart.

Hart and Roger fight. I think Roger is right about one thing. I think he does love Hart he was just already in a bad spot with him (having unintentionally caused his grandfather who had raised him’s death) and his attempts to fix it just made things worse. Gilly and Hart have a talk about Roger. Ed told Michelle to get a ride to school with Gale’s mother. I don’t remember Gale at all and we probably won’t see her today – we don’t. They are going to meet outside. Vanessa went over to tell Nola, but Nola had already heard somehow through Michelle. Vanessa and Nola had been rivals for attention when Nola and Quint had lived in Springfield, but they both loved Henry very much.

Nola: “[Vanessa] Are you OK?”

Vanessa: “Yes, yes, yes, yes.”

Nola: “I’m not….I’m glad you came by.”

Vanessa: “I know how much you loved my father…”

Nola: “I keep thinking about the craziest things. This one night we had an all night poker game. He accused me of bluffing and he never folded his hand.”

Vanessa with a smile: “That’s because he wanted you to win.”

Nola: “Yea, he did want me to win. Not too many people I¬†can say that about. You were real lucky to have him.”

Vanessa wants to talk funeral arrangements. Nola breaks down she’s not ready yet.

Nola: “You can cry in front of me. We can cry together.”

David and Bridget argue over Hart and Bridget’s reactions to him. Roger breaks back into the suite and takes the real books and information about how he drained Dinah’s accounts. He asks Leo Flynn to make a set of dummy books and when Roger offers him his yearly salary for the two weeks work he accepts. Meanwhile Hart is getting information from Gilly that Roger cooked the books.

More icky cousin on cousin action. J tells Michelle some garbage and she eats it up with a spoon. Michelle to J: “See that’s what I mean about me not doing or saying the right thing. I mean in the first place I’m NOT that young. I went to SCHOOL IN EUROPE. I’m not a stupid little kid.” Now she’s in good with J again, Michelle is all over leaving. Ross and Matt talk about Vanessa. Matt proving once again he’s a junior partner in their relationship and that doesn’t know Vanessa as well as Ross does. Ross: “Vanessa didn’t always have the qualities you admire. It takes time and it’ll take time for you.” aka you’re immature. Ross thinks that Matt helped Vanessa get through her anger at Billy and Bridget and Dylan that was taking over her life. Nola keeps at Vanessa trying to get her to face her emotions. Vanessa has a list of pall bearers – the list of names doesn’t include Matt.

Roger reassures Leo they will be safe. Hart shows up to ask Alan for his help to nail Roger. Nola keeps urging Vanessa to let go, but Vanessa is maintaining her stiff upper lip. David tells Bridget he’s in love with her. Quint shows up at the Reardon Boarding House door.

Extra Day 2 РFebruary 1996???

Marah has run away. People are gathering with Josh and Annie at the Land of Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams, and volunteers stop by the 5th Street Diner where Reva is keeping everybody full up with coffee. Quinton and Vanessa cling to their mutual loss.

Annie is sort of right and sort of wrong about Marah running away being Reva’s fault. Josh is frustrated and says he can’t just wait there he is going to do some random looking himself. Quint and Nola make nice and find forgiveness in their grief. Quint admits Nola was even closer to his father than he was. They talk about Henry’s reaction to their breakup since Henry has been “visiting” Quint between when the actor died and when the character died on screen.
Quint: “He said to me, I was always afraid you would be dissatisfied with a perfect marriage.”

Hart goes to Alan for help taking out Roger.
Amanda: “Father, don’t murder Hart unless you want to be involved in another costly legal battle.”

Alan about Hart: “You are a determined little flea, aren’t you.”
David tells Bridget he’s in love with her. Bridget and David continue to discuss his declaration. Gilly goes on air with an appeal to help find Marah. Reva won’t go on afraid it might make Marah run. Griffin shows up and Gilly thinks he’s just showing off, but when he goes looking himself Gilly thinks maybe she was wrong. Tina, the prostitute from New Years, shows up and offers her help too.¬†Gilly wants to put Reva on camera to aid in search for Marah Lewis (who is 8). Reva thinks it would cause more problems. Tina was the prostitute who came in on New Year’s Eve and Eleni chased her out.

Holly and Fletcher are with Annie at the Land of Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams supporting Annie while Marah was gone. Annie unknowingly predicts the future that she and Josh will be together forever just like Holly and Fletcher (SPOILER: both couples will soon be toast). Josh finds Reva at the dinner (clearly something really important happened in between since we last saw them). Henry Chamberlain has died (more important stuff went down with the Reardons and Chamberlains that we didn’t see) and J walks in with Vanessa finding Quint and Nola embarrassing situation (SPOILER: do NOT get your hopes up Quola fans if they had to do this stupid affair stuff they could have gotten some decent interaction out of it. Nope not happening. Still resentful.). The grad student Quint was sleeping with shows up, everyone freaks and Quint can’t understand why.

They freak out.

J : “You almost had me going there professor for a second I was almost buying into you being¬†my dad again. I even thought you looked good standing there hugging Mom. You know what I was saying to myself, maybe this guy has finally turned back into an adult, but you know what, NO you have to bring your Barbie doll girlfriend along¬†from grad school.”

Quint: “I do NOT like the way you’re speaking to Jessica Do NOT use that tone of voice with your father.”

J : “Maybe if you acted like my dad, I could treat you like one all right.”

Vanessa is likewise appalled and freezing girlfriend Barbie out.

Amanda offers comfort to Alan because he’s upset about his relationship with Reva. Amanda give him advice: “If you really love someone, what good is pride anyway?”

Josh leaves and Reva feels faint from not eating.

Griffin talks Reva into eating to keep strong.¬† Gilly is thinking Griffin is putting on a show (which I think he totally is), but the search for Marah continues. The Journal is putting out a special edition. Josh makes it home to the Land of Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams. Word came a little girl matching Marah’s description was hit by a car.

Hart finds Bridget and says he wants Peter to be part of his life and he’d taken her words to heart. David freaks. Bridget shuts him down. J tries to comfort Nola about Quint. Vanessa tears into Quint over his bringing his mistress for the funeral. Reva returns to her house and discovers Marah is there waiting for her.

Extra Day 3 February 1996

Alan pushes into Company and we’ve already lost all the goodwill from working together to save LAM. Instead Buzz and Alan snarl at each other over Reva — who really be better off if she’d tell both of them to take a long walk off a short pier. Josh and Annie arrive at Cedars rushing into the emergency room where they find it was another little girl who was hurt (no name girl isn’t badly hurt so don’t worry about her). Marah tells Reva that she’s there to move in with Reva, but only if she’ll leave Josh and Annie alone.

Actually they are both right Buzz and Alan are making fools of themselves, fighting over which man wiill second and which third in Reva’s life.¬† Marah tells Reva that she did her chores. On a school morning she is responsible for making her bed and getting her own breakfast. Sounds like either Josh and Annie or the nanny aren’t doing their duty, she has to feed herself? Reva tries to figure out what’s going on. Marah takes this as an indication that Reva doesn’t want her living there and asked then why did Reva say she’d never stop fighting Josh. Rick and Lillian support Annie and Josh is angry Rick is taking an interest. Since Reva is back on Josh’s radar, if Josh wasn’t a jerk he’d step back, but he’s ready to set a course to crash Annie on the rocks instead.

And we get to see the Bauer House today. Yay! Michelle attempts to spread both poor body image AND poor nutritional advice to Abby. Can’t it be November 1998 in a hurry? Hold on Michelle you’re going to act stupid the next couple of years, but Danny is coming as a reward at the end. Abby has a romantic fantasy about Rick and a red dress. The wind machine in the Bauer kitchen is a nice touch. ūüôā Buzz is running off at the mouth. He has no idea what makes Alan tick. I’m not exactly who he thinks he’s describing here, but it’s not Alan. Reva tries to explain to Marah that she doesn’t understand. Marah’s misdirection tactic includes explaining that her nanny is named Mary and is from Dublin, Ireland.

Abby tells Michelle that she feels her Goshen clothes make people either laugh at her or ignore her. Rick and Michelle have an unproductive talk about dating. He tells her to let J alone (not by name) and she tells him Abby has a thing for him which Rick doesn’t believe. I think Reva should have called Josh, sent Marah upstairs for something if she doesn’t want to do it in front of her. Shayne comes down and has a nice conversation with Annie. Shayne sells Marah out telling Annie that Marah took the musicbox. Reva as always hears what she wants to when Marah talks to her.

Frank asks Buzz if he loves Reva. Frank says he knew Buzz and Nadine had something magic, but weren’t right together long term. What now? Alan showed up at Reva’s door before she could call Josh. Alan tells her he’s sorry, but already in Josh light again Reva is not interested and tells Alan to hit the road. Meanwhile Marah makes a sad little shrine to her former life. Shayne continues to spill his guts listing off what Marah took even though it was mostly “stupid girl stuff.”

Michelle tells Rick Abby has a crush on him. Rick says “Ya, right” and then Abby comes in dressed in modern clothes. Rick wants to talk Abby down. Little girl Marina is cute and fun. It’s really a shame Eleni took her to California and ruined her. I don’t know why they never gave Frank another committed relationship after this, he does them so well. Annie and Josh figure out that Marah had been collecting things to remember Annie by.

Rick tries to talk Abby down. Alan is remembering hard truths from Reva and Buzz. Reva discovers Marah has taken Annie’s things to remember her.

In the December 30, 1986 issue of Soap Opera Digest, a fan writes in and asks about Calla Matthews. The fan wanted to know if Calla still had syphilis. She was cured of the disease, but would no longer be able to have any more kids.

A question in the December 30, 1986 issue of Soap Opera Digest ask if Keith Timmons on Santa Barbara‘s cat was really his actor’s Justin Deas‘s cat. It wasn’t.

In the December 30, 1986 issue of Soap Opera Digest has a great 2 page photo of Grant Aleksander (Phillip Spaulding #2, adult Phillip) with a couple of cats. It’s worth finding the issue. There’s also a photo of Kimi Packs who played Dorie who India adopted.

Roger Howarth (Jory Andros, Eleni’s brother in 1992) returned to shooting his role of Franco Baldwin on General Hospital in July after a protracted contract neogiation. Read more in the August 14, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

JoBeth Williams (Brandy ???) talks about how Guiding Light‘s TPTB were kind and let her out of her contract after she hit the big time in Kramer vs. Kramer. The quote was originally from 2002, but was quoted again in the April 15, 2013 issue of Soap Opera Digest about¬†how nice TPTB were about letting her out of her contract.

The April 4, 1986 issue of Soap Opera Digest answers a fan question about Simon Hall (the illegitimate son of Alexandra’s first husband who was also the father of Lujack and Nick McHenry). His accent was Canada and was his actor’s (Shawn Thompson) real accent.

Beth Ehlers (Harley Cooper Davidson) was quoted from an interview originally published in the June 8, 1993 issue and republished in the August 7, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest: “Actors are just normal people. I think that disappoints fans more than anything else.” Ehlers was also featured in a round up of siblings paired with Frank Dicopoulos (Frank Cooper).

Check out a casual photo of Laura Wright (Cassie Winslow #1) and her current boyfriend Wes Ramsey (Sam Spencer, Olivia’s brother) in the July 31, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Jeva Custody Case 1996 Feb 12 16 1996

August 7, 2017

I started going through and breaking Bandstand Mike’s episodes into dates. This run started on December 20, 1995. Our last post in the series ended February 9 1996.

Rick confesses to Annie he still loves her and wants her back. Alan tells Reva to give up the custody fight or he’s leaving her. Reva picks her kids. With Alan out of the picture Buzz attempts to move in and ignores Hawk’s admonition that Reva and Josh will always find their way back to each other. The Jeva custody trial moves forward. LAM are back together and sorry to have missed their original wedding date and are in a hurry to arrange another. However, they aren’t as in as much of a hurry as Susan and Nick McHenry who will marry and move to Europe within the next week with little or no warning. Amanda is found locked in the construction shed and is dangerously ill. She’s rushed to the hospital meaning Alan has two children in the hospital right now. Dinah solidifies her friendship with Dinah – which is good they both could use a friend. Hart is still determined to leave town and heads for the bus station.

Monday, February 12, 1996

I think Amanda is right about Ross being furious and on her side if he would find her or find out about it, but why would he think to look for her? He thinks she left his office to go home. Rick confesses to Annie he doesn’t think she and Josh will make it and that he still loves her. Alan tells Reva give up the custody fight, make a deal, or he’s out of their relationship.

Reva tells Alan that she needs him in her life. Amanda makes a foolish decision and doesn’t ask the guard for help. That’s kind of awesome that Amanda figured how to get out.

Ross: “I waited a lifetime to find you.”

Blake: “And when you did you couldn’t get enough.”

Dinah and Amanda find each other at a bar and commiserate. Hart heads to the bus station.

Reva tells Alan she’s choosing her kids, she isn’t pursuing the kids just to keep a link with Josh. He still doesn’t believe her. He gives Reva the house. She says she won’t stay there, but she and Josh later live there. Ross discovers Blake left her birth control in the bathroom despite Ross specifically asking her to use it to take the stress off.

Ross is concerned about Blake. Dinah and Amanda are quickly becoming drinking buddies. Dinah: “If you can unseat the henna head more power to you!” (Henna is used for various things including red hair dye.) Ross believes Josh is devoted to Annie. He’s normally not this stupid.

Nice for Reva to have reached out to Dylan even if it’s off camera. Hawk really looked cold in that coat. Great acting job. Hawk tells Reva that he was staying with a friend and got kicked out when he burned down the coach. Hawk also confesses he blew through all of Miss Sarah’s money on gambling. Josh is supporting Miss Sarah now. Look at Reva and that handkerchief. She genuinely cared for Alan. It makes no sense considering how she treats him later. Good for Amanda not letting Dinah drive drunk.

“All the damage fear has done.” That’s a perfect song for Bloss right now. The quilt on their bed is Flying Geese pattern.

Tuesday, February 13, 1996

It’s a new day in Springfield. Buzz shows up to visit Reva and is ecstatic Reva and Alan have broken up.

Annie and Josh are concerned about the hearing today. That’s too bad that Dinah responded with snark. I think Blake is trying to be nice for once. Matt finally gets to work and finds a truly unconscious Amanda.

Marah is upset that Reva is doing something that has upset Annie and Josh. Hawk (about Jeva not reconciling immediately): “That doesn’t mean it’s open season for every Tom, Dick, or burger flipper.” Buzz and Hawk clash over Reva. Good for Reva to stand up as an independent woman.
Reva: “I’m not a little girl anymore and I’m not Snow White waiting for some prince to come save me.” Buzz is indulging in some wishful thinking here.

Hawk turns up to see Marah. He brings her a Barbie like doll with a cowgirl outfit. I agree with Hawk someone should explain things to Marah even if it really isn’t his place. Amanda is rushed to Cedars. It’s a rough day for Alan with two children in the hospital. I’d say 3 months is a couple of months. That was pretty picky. Rick is called to the witness stand. Althea brings up Annie’s alcoholism.

Ross cross examines Rick. Ed is called to the stand. He claims privileged information and refuses to answer even when threatened with a contempt of court charge. I think the counseling stuff should be covered, but having to physically take a bottle out of her hands is direct experience and I do think he should be required to tell about that. Hawk explains Reva’s side to Marah. I’m kind of sorry Dinah outed Amanda. Blake kind of deserves it. Dinah’s right it’s a bit harsh to defend Blake to Amanda when Amanda was in the hospital.

Matt warns Blake and is shocked to hear Amanda was at least telling part of the truth. Ross walks by and over hears.

Wednesday, February 14, 1996

Alex finally shows up at Cedars to see A-M to find Nick and Susan already there this morning. I know it’s not nice what they are saying about Blake who I like, but I’m enjoying Dinah and Amanda as friends. They both need some female and friendly support.

About Blake Dinah: “She’s toast.”

Amanda: “Burnt toast.”

Dinah: “Soon to be turned into crumbs.”

Amanda: “And swept away. Bye-bye Blake.”

Alan shows up very concerned about Amanda. Why do you think Amanda could easily get out, Blake? I mean she Macguyvered her way out, but it wasn’t obvious.

Reva genuinely doesn’t know what Annie is talking about. I don’t blame Ross for being appalled. That is some mustache on the cop. Roger is still playing the distressed husband role. Luckily Dinah isn’t having it.

Nick and Susan are trying to keep prying eyes away from Lucy and Alan-Michael making out. We get a reference to Valentine’s Day. They were originally supposed to get married on that day. Which considering that was VERY close to A-M and Harley’s anniversary, it’s a little tasteless. Great job building up tension about the witness.

I don’t know why Reva objected to her lawyer. I think this is perfectly fair testimony especially because she had done absolutely nothing to help this woman even since marrying big money. Alex informs Nick and Susan who were talking about an impromptu wedding that she plans Alex: “the wedding of MY dreams.” Alan comes in informing the family that he has moved back into the mansion and that Amanda is down in Emergency. Roger continues to try and save his relationship with Dinah. It was Roger’s place originally, I don’t know why Dinah thinks he should leave.

Blake is put in the cell next to Brent Lawrence who is still insisting he’s Marian Crane. Roger is still focusing on how he NEEDS Dinah in his life. Sadly it’s because he’s embezzling her money and doesn’t want it to come out. Roger has a rare gift he can make you like him and hate him within the space of a handful of episodes and then do it all over again. Amanda to Matt about how she couldn’t break out of the construction shack: “Forgive me for never having watched This Old Shack.” That’s a reference to a popular PBS home remodel show This Old House. Annie testifies about her alcoholism and does a great job. (Honestly the only time I ever liked Annie on the show was when she was fighting with Ghost Reva otherwise it always seemed like even when she was happy there was a level of frenzied crazy eye right below the surface, but she did NOT deserve the campaign against her by Jeva which has already began even though Josh doesn’t realize it yet.)

Matt gets Amanda to drop the charges against Blake and is still on her case. Alexandra overhears his threat, but doesn’t know what Matt has on Amanda. Frank is frustrated about getting through to Brent and calls A-M. Dinah tells Roger that she isn’t having any that setting up Marcus and constantly seeing the look of pity in Holly’s eyes is too much she isn’t going back. Again it was Roger’s place Dinah moved in why should he leave?

Hart shows up on Dinah’s door. Blake is released and A-M shows up at the jail to talk to Brent. The judge rules that the kids stay with Josh, but Annie has to move out. I’m pretty positive, but not 100% that this is the tag for Wednesday, but the way it’s put together both the clips and the structure this could possibly be the before the credits of the next day.

Thursday, February 15, 1996

Dinah makes a crack about Hart not being the Prize Patrol – she is referencing American Publishing House which sent out a prize patrol with balloons and a giant fake check announcing you won so many million dollars in their drawing which you entered by buying magazine subscriptions. Frank Cooper decides he might be able to crack Brent by bringing in Alan-Michael and Lucy. Amanda is still sick (coughing) when no one is around, but not too bad. Blake shows up at her room to tear into Amanda. I think that Blake is wrong. Sure Amanda could have gotten out, but she easily might not have been able to. It was pretty clever of Amanda to come up with taking the door off the hinges and while she did hide from the guard, a cold night, a slack guard, and he might not have checked. It was a dangerous stunt if she didn’t follow up. Everyone is upset when Annie is ordered out of the house, but I kind of love this judge and I think he’s right.

Judge: “It seems to me that Mr. Lewis has been moving JUST A BIT quickly, starting with his petition to this court two years early to have Reva Shayne Lewis declared legally dead….your client brought a new woman into the lives of his children. He encouraged them to call her Mommy. It would almost seem to this court that he wants Reva Shayne Lewis to stay dead to his children.”

I think this judge is amazingly right on. Why didn’t Manny get HIM in divorce court so he could tell them to sit down and take a breath when they were rushing to get divorced? Buzz moves in to comfort and make a move on Reva. If the construction shack was so weak what was the point of it existing? It was supposed to be protecting those tools and it’s a semi-permanent set, it wasn’t exactly made of paper. Josh: “This shouldn’t be happening. It’s not fair. We both know who’s responsible.” Actually you’re exactly right, Josh. This shouldn’t be happening and YOU and Reva are responsible. Stand up and let Annie go now cleanly and she might still have a chance. What a great Ross and Ed best friend scene near the end. I just love it when they play that.

UPDATED January 9 2018: I realized I didn’t have a summary block so I added one and moved some of the quotes down a line.

Brent Lawrence Bomb in the Lighthouse Part 4 Feb 5 thru Feb 9 1996

January 3, 2017

LAM’s fathers, Alan and Buzz, have teamed up to save the kids in one of my all time favorite Alan-Buzz sequences. Reva and Nick McHenry also join in the rescue effort. LAM are finally rescued and A-M and Alan make peace. Hart has taken his revenge on Roger by bedding Dinah, but Dinah still believes they are the real thing – for good reason. Dinah confides in Ross and he starts divorce proceedings between her and Roger. Bridget is furious that Hart is intending to abandon his son. There is some Annie-Jeva stuff which feels more like a check in with the story rather than organically fitting with the characters’s actions in the other storylines right now. However there is one of the most important scenes ever for Reva when she tries to explain Jeva to Alan in the most clear headed way she ever did. Blake locks Amanda into the construction shed kicking off a great and colorful dream sequence. Comment blocks below include clip description, quotes, and my comments.

Monday, February 5, 1996

Hart had come to town wanting revenge on Roger for what he did to his grandfather (impregnated and then abandoned his daughter, stole his land, and triggered his death) and how Roger had believed Jenna (Roger’s then wife) over Hart when Jenna accused Hart of aggressively hitting on her. (Jenna had lied to cover her own betrayal of Roger.) Hart rubs Roger’s nose in the fact he had sex with Dinah. Marcus talks sense to Dinah, but she doesn’t want to hear it – so what else is new? Reva tells Frank and Frank calls in the cops to come to the dock. We have an amazingly good section where Alan and Buzz have a great back and forth with Brent. Over the years they have Alan and Buzz be enemies and have them work together. It’s always a lot cooler when they set them up to work together. They are different, but both can pull out the gravitas when needed. They throw in some Jeva-Annie business just to do a check-in on that storyline although it feels off where they stick it in. Of course Reva’s¬†lawyer would try to find stuff against Annie and Josh. What do they think? Lucy and Alan-Michael “marry” each other while waiting for the bomb to go off at about 20 minutes into this clip. I was wondering at the time why they didn’t worry about Brent having a camera recording them. Lucy should have followed Brent¬†into the room and not given him a chance to watch it.

Tuesday, February 6, 1996

It was nice look at Ross’ law office, but I don’t know why he’d take off and leave it unlocked. It’s nice of Alan to talk Buzz down about Frank. Nick McHenry shows up and wants to know what’s going on. Reva had hidden in the back of Brent’s truck and is now sneaking into the lighthouse. Hart brings Dinah to Ross’ office to start the ball rolling on her divorce, but doesn’t want to stick around. I don’t understand though what his issue was. Even if he was completely lying (which I only think he thinks he is right now) why not just say he wants kept out for legal reasons and has to go back to work. Why make the big point about leaving to go to lunch? I kind of feel bad though, for once in his life Frank cracks a crime through brain power & 30 seconds later Reva comes in and steals his glory. I’m with Ross I saw how Roger talked Dinah into signing him her power of attorney and I still can’t believe she was that stupid. It’s also not good to co-mingle all funds even within a good marriage. That exact accounting of Dinah’s funds (which Roger has been embezzling left and right) is why Roger has been making these desperate plays to keep Dinah. I think he did like her, but he liked her money and sticking it to Ross even more. Roger is in love with Holly and despite all the garbage between them (they are both in need of serious psych help) I do believe she loves him too. Going for the bomb was truly a brilliant move on Alan-Michael’s part. He is at his smartest in the year or so right before this.

Wednesday, February 7, 1996

Really these are very well done recap half scenes.

Roger: “You know what it’s like to love somebody so much that you’d be willing to do anything to keep them.”

Ross: “Yes, but I don’t think you do.”

Ross is completely wrong here. Roger was willing to deliberately injure himself in a car crash to get another chance with Holly. He just doesn’t feel that way about Dinah. Plus, Ross should see that Roger is legitimately desperate, just over the consequences not losing Dinah per say.¬† I don’t get Hart being ready to take off either. I don’t think he was ever mature enough to be a good father, but I do think he cared about the kid, at least enough to say goodbye in person. Plus, this is where he gets to stick to Roger. If he takes off Roger might get Dinah back which Hart has spent all this time to set up to keep from happening. Cassie Lawrence (Brent’s sister) shows up and tries to talk Brent down. Ross talks sense to Dinah while Roger waits outside. Maybe he’s trying to get Ross to bust them up hoping he can then reconcile. Bridget reads Hart the riot act. She has started to get emotionally involved again. And if you were starting to think maybe¬†Roger genuinely caring for Dinah note that it was the minute Ross tried to get her to sign the nullification of the Power of Attorney was when he burst in and sadly she leaves without signing. Ross and Roger have a long complicated history an confrontation between them is great. David was in love with Bridget and he was my second choice for her right behind Dylan. They were great friends for a long time – as Bridget and Dylan were – and I think they could have had an incredibly solid marriage, but it never occurred to Bridget to see David that way. The back and forth between Brent, Lucy, and Alan-Michael during the confrontation is great, but it takes like 2 minutes tops to run up the stairs at the lighthouse. Just what is taking Frank and Nick so long? They should have showed them starting later if they didn’t want them up there by now. I’m glad A-M showed he truly was the better person by holding on to Brent, but I can’t blame Lucy for wanting him to let go. This was a good fake out with Bridget and Hart, but it would have been better if they’d cut it in before Dinah arrived. I’ve never heard Miranda read like that, but I think if you have to say “Do you understand?” you need some sort of recognition before you can continue. Full long credits at the end of this one.

Thursday, February 8, 1996

Dinah and Hart talk and you figure out maybe Hart’s decision wasn’t as clear cut as everyone else thought to this point. Blake comes in and hears Ross tell that Hart slept with Dinah to get get even. Blake is on Hart’s side, but Roger tells Blake he still loves her no matter how she feels around him. Roger: “[Amanda] is after your husband and everyone in the whole town knows it…so far this one may have lusted after Amanda only in his heart, but give him time.” [In a very famous interview of former President Jimmy Carter when asked about if he’d ever committed adultery he admitted to having lusted in his heart and the phrase caught on.]

Alan-Michael: “I’m fine.”

Alan: “I’ll believe that when Ed Bauer tells me. I almost lost you once I’m not taking another chance.”

Dinah is hurt by Hart’s attitude. Ed checks out Lucy and Alan-Michael. They are good, but he wants them both in the hospital overnight for observation. Lucy apologizes for losing the $10 million dollars by hitting Brent with the suitcase.

A-M: “Father….that money in the satchel it wasn’t yours, was it?”

Lucy: “Yea, I’m very sorry for loosing it. I just had to hit him with something.”

Alan: “You were magnificent, Lucy. I couldn’t have put it to better use myself.

Lucy: “Yea, but it was a lot of money.”

A-M: “It WAS¬†yours.”

Alan: “It’s only money, son. The most important thing is that you are safe.”

And he really means it. That right there is while you love Alan despite all the awful crap he pulls. I never really liked Nick except when he was happy with Mindy, but when he truly acts like a cousin to A-M which is rare enough I love him. Brent has terrible mental issues. I don’t think he’s faking, but I don’t remember. Why didn’t they call Amanda? She’s his sister and helped during the crisis. Matt to Vanessa about Dinah: “She doesn’t know you as well as she thinks she does.” Sadly that’s because while she does her best to take care of Dinah, Vanessa never ever opens up to Dinah. They needed that conversation for Vanessa to confess how she was as a young woman and how desperate she is for Dinah not to repeat her mistakes. Another nice Alan-Buzz moment. Buzz to Reva: “You have a choice.” You have a choice? Yea, Reva could choose to be independent and walk away from Alan without having to run to another man for once.

Friday, February 9, 1996

I don’t know why Reva believed Josh’s story and allowed it to color her attitude so completely. Even if Alan did things worse than Josh said, he just went through that ordeal with his kid. If she had even mild affection for him, she should have felt glad for him.

Blake: “Very smooth.”

Amanda: “I use moisturizer. Everyone should.”

Blake and Amanda who are more alike than either will admit (which is too bad Amanda grew up a lot during her first run on the show she was in a really great place last time we saw her before this recast). Blake locks Amanda in the construction shack which should have a phone so she can call to get out. I hope she can. Blake could have been having supper with Ross instead. It would have better served her cause. Rick is subpoenaed by Reva’s lawyer. Reva’s lawyer, Althea Templeton, warns her that Ross will come after her fitness as a mother. Reva: “I’m their mother. I gave them life and for the last 5 years I’ve lived like a damn saint.”

Marah hears the yelling for some reason assumes it’s about her. Marah is acting odd and Annie and Josh realize it. Reva tries to talk Alan to get it. Reva: “Bud can’t give without taking something back. He’s a Lewis and I’m a Shayne.” Reva describes the terrible thing that is always an issue between them. I think she’s quite right about this Josh doesn’t see it. This reminds me so much of the scene where she was moving out of H.B.’s house to move in with Josh and he made her throw out her clothes because HIS wife wouldn’t wear those things that I think is a defining moment in their relationship even more than the fountain scene.

Reva: “I just can’t be beholden to him anymore and that’s the bottom line. Maybe he just can’t see it. Maybe being born golden blinds you to certain things and being born poor lets you see too much. Bud always knew his place in the world and I spent a lifetime looking for mine and I thought that maybe once I had him I’d have everything I needed in life. I’d finally feel strong and safe and secure and that I could do no wrong. He knew I’d be and do whatever he wanted to get him and he was right. Even when we were kids he’d dangle carrots in front of my face. He’d say you be it Reva or we can’t play or put a prettier dress on or I won’t sit¬† in church with you. I gave Josh my mind, my body, and my soul and I will NOT give him my children so he can make them feel the way I felt my entire life.”

Alan: “Reva, you can find a middle ground.”

Reva: “No, Alan, with Bud it’s all or nothing and that’s the way it’s going to have to be with me. I’m sorry, but I’m moving out.”

Rick and Ed discuss their subpoenas. Rick thinks Ed will be able to claim privileged information and Ed says recent court rulings says that AAA people can be forced to testify about things said in meetings which I think is terrible. I’m going to have to look it up and see if that’s still true. That Ed understands this I totally get, but what does he mean IF? Ed did this same exact thing to protect Michelle from Claire. Rick is exactly right about this. I know Ed thinks Rick is seeing what he wants too, but he’s completely correct. Josh and Reva are getting back together and Annie is just a roadblock. And it’s the not telling Annie that will completely break her.

Annie’s hair is completely gorgeous here. Annie is such a competent nurse. I hate they took that away from her. The old guy’s name isn’t Scottie Hamilton. Scott Hamilton was a very famous Olympic ice skater. I just love it. Amanda is still trapped. Amanda: “Help! Is anyone out that? Help me I’ve been locked inside by a neurotic bimbo!” Now that’s funny. Amanda has an AMAZING fantasy sequence based on Dudley DoRight. Mountie Marler: “What do you expect from the daughter of Snidley Whiplash?” — Amanda: “Now show me while they call you mounties.” Eyebrow arch. LOL

I’m glad that Rick didn’t get his wish about reuniting with Annie, but that is a lovely old married couple squabble. That is a gorgeous wild rose quilt in Marah’s room. That’s terrible lighting in the Alan/Reva scene look at that awful¬† shadow on Reva’s sweater and then on her face. After Reva poured her heart out about the pain Josh caused how can Alan not get this?

Final Brent Lawrence Terror Part 3 Jan 29 Feb 2 1996

January 1, 2017

Picking up from the last post Brent Lawrence still has Lucy. That‚Äôs the major storyline to me in this next section, but it’s interrupted for some more early Dart and kicking up the biggest story ever for the Grant family up a notch. Matt is still threatening Amanda about coming clean about the her escort service. Nola is still having problems with J and Bridget is trying to decide if she should go after Hart or not. Also, sort of tying in with the rescue attempts, but not really, Alan warns Annie that he thinks Jeva are starting to get back together and Buzz is making a move on Reva. Comment blocks below include clip description, quotes, and my comments.

Monday, January 29, 1996

The cop¬†tailing A-M reports to Frank (via radio which they know Brent has been checking????) and they are ready to follow A-M when he leaves thinking he’ll lead them to Brent. Amanda jumps in front of A-M’s car telling him she won’t let him risk his life. A-M is her brother and she loves him. Buzz is also listening to the police band radio while working in the dinner. Buzz and Reva had started the beginning of a friendship (which always turns to sex with Reva) when she was still in Amish Reva/Rebecca mode. They’d met up a few times in Springfield, but Reva had never told him of her connection to either Alan or Josh which hurt Buzz and made him feel like a fool.

It’s hard to tell if Brent is buying Lucy coming around to like him or not. He wants to have sex with Lucy, but she tells him that she’d be fine if only they’d go someplace else. Brent starts to freak out, but then comes around. He starts to walk Lucy through the night of rape, making Lucy walk them through that night from his POV. Amanda begs A-M to tell police what Brent said and A-M begs Amanda to let him go.

Amanda: “You’re my brother, I just found you again, you can’t die.”

A-M: “If I die trying to save her, then I die. I can’t let her down. Please try and understand Amanda, I can’t.”

A-M spots his police trail and realizes Frank is going to have him followed. He asks Amanda to help him get away.

Alan is trying to get Annie to help him keep Reva and Josh apart. Annie at first claims her marriage is solid, but then listens to Alan. Annie says she has nothing to hide (um, the retcon makes this totally untrue, although the drug addiction she had even then doesn’t help).

Frank’s partner suffers a fit of self-doubt giving a recap of recent action. Meanwhile Amanda disguised as A-M drives off. A-M runs down the stairs that shows Level 5 is the first one under street level. Brent continues his rewrite of their rape night.

Lucy takes over reminding Brent of how great they had been together before that night. It seems like Lucy has him reeled in, but then the alarm goes off and Brent calls A-M telling him next to call him from the phone booth on the docks near where they found Nadine. Buzz is full of self-blame from how he has let everyone down repeatedly. Most recently by staying with Reva instead of showing up at Frank’s police academy graduation. Reva tells him to knock off complaining and do something. Alan continues to push Annie to help him. Rick is still interested in Annie and she turns to him afraid her alcoholism will come out.

Annie is frantic to Rick that by revealing her alcoholism Reva will take Marah and Shayne from Josh. Rick talks her down. A-M makes the deadline to pick up the phone on the docks.

Brent reacts to Lucy having interrupted his A-M. Lucy says she’s upset because Brent lied to her, not because of A-M. Lucy continues to try to convince Brent to leave town without seeing A-M. Brent doesn’t bite and tells A-M to come to the lighthouse which A-M believes is finally the meet. Frank catches Amanda and tells her she just killed A-M.

Rick says he will help Annie, but never lie for her again. She freaks out and storms out the door. Buzz tells Reva she made a mistake being with Alan, that she should be with him instead. Frank gets out of Amanda what she knows which isn’t much. Alan shows up and Amanda catches Alan up. A-M shows up at the lighthouse and Brent comes out and smiles.

Tues., Jan. 30, 1996

Annie returns home to the Land of Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams. She’s freaked and tells Josh she has to move out. Buzz tells Reva that she should be with him instead because he could love her better than either Alan or Josh despite the fact that minutes ago he was saying how he failed everyone he ever loved. Alan is furious when Amanda catches him up and attacks her. Brent delightedly welcomes A-M to the lighthouse.

Brent makes fun of A-M. Brent: “Do you know how stupid a name that is, Alan-Michael?” (I kind of wish that A-M had explained the story behind his name at that point just to throw Brent off.) Brent reminds A-M that he shot him in the stomach after making him beg for Lucy’s life and to see her. Brent: “It feels like you swallowed fire.” Brent says pushing the gun into A-M’s stomach. Annie tells Josh about what Alan said and she says she has to move out. Marah overhears and is further upset. Reva asks Buzz what he’s talking about that they are just friends with some sexual attraction. Reva runs down Alan’s good points. I wish she’d remember this later on. Buzz insists if she really loved Alan, she’d have said so. Buzz tells her to call Alan and say she is going to date Buzz and goes in for a kiss.

Meanwhile Alexandra has Matt over telling him she wants to build a second home office that would be for Alan – I guess she’s taken over the one she’s standing in -and a solarium off the kitchen for cook to grow herbs. Matt calls her on just wanting more information on Amanda. Brent runs a portable metal detector over A-M and discovers he has a gun. Brent brings A-M up to the second floor of the lighthouse where Lucy is and they finally see each other again. I haven’t counted soap days, but in real life it’s been a month. See I think I would have wound this up quicker than this and pushed Reva and Josh to the second part of the month, but I’m not a writer. ūüôā

A-M says hello and Brent taunts him. Lucy says she never wanted to see A-M again. Alan has pressed the right psychological button and Amanda is back to being a good little girl again. Sadly she’s fragile. Alan hires a new computer expert and puts him on finding Brent even though Spaulding’s normal computer people have failed. Alan calls the diner and Buzz tries to put him off, but Reva takes the phone and he catches her up and asks Reva to come. When he realizes it’s about Lucy and A-M, Buzz insists on coming along. And leaves the diner unlocked and unmanned. Seriously it’s no wonder why they were always on the verge of losing the business.

Marah comes down singing the song that drives the guy nuts in George Orwell’s 1984. This is NOT a good sign. Marah says Shayne was asking if they’d ever have to go live with Mama. They tell her no. Marah is clearly pretending the questions came from Shayne when they are from her and she is upset on whether she’ll have to go live with Reva or away from Josh or not. Then Marah continues to sing the crazy bell song — seriously it freaks me out every since I heard a radio production of 1984. Amanda is also freaked out. Alex tells Amanda that Matt has told her all about it. Matt jumps into the breech and continues the cover story. Lucy freaks out on Brent pretending she doesn’t care about A-M. Lucy jumps into attack mode and Brent thinks¬†she’s his mother and backs away into the fetal position, but still holding on to the gun.

Alan’s computer man, constantly typing, is working on tracking him down. Buzz says he thinks Brent doesn’t just want money, but wants to break everyone. Buzz thinks that Brent wouldn’t leave until he breaks A-M. Buzz, Alan, and Reva profile Brent. The computer guy gets a lead. A-M is afraid what Lucy is doing as they communicate with their eyes. Then Brent pops back up. Brent says he’s going to count to 30 and then shoot A-M. If Lucy tries to stop him, he’ll know she’s lying. Lucy tries to argue that he shouldn’t kill A-M just because it would be stupid. It doesn’t work. He puts Lucy’s hands under his on the gun and points it at A-M.

Amanda and Matt talk. Amanda tells Matt that she’s always afraid she won’t be part of the Spaulding family anymore. Amanda tells Matt they have a deal. She’ll stay away from Ross and he’ll keep his mouth shut about their connection in California. (If you don’t know for reasons they’re never really clear about, Amanda was running a prostitution ring and Matt was working for her.) As Brent reaches 30 in his count for Lucy to shoot the expert finds the number, Alan chats to Brent. Meanwhile A-M comes up behind Brent with a ceramic knife. Bravo! Bravo! There’s some his grandfather Mike’s smarts! ‚ô•

Wed., January 31, 1996

We pickup a different storyline today as Hart comes in and finds Dinah sitting alone in the farmhouse in the dark. He lights a kerosene lamp. Dinah expects Hart to tear into her. Alan is luring Brent in on the chat when A-M comes behind Brent (For some reason with a horror movie knife raise instead of a quick next to jugular move), but at the last minute Brent turns and fires at A-M.

A-M is shot and in pain, but not dead. Lucy continues with her plan to convince Brent she wants him. Holly, Fletcher, Ross, and Blake are having a nice reception at Reva Bend. They are concerned about Dinah. Holly abruptly changes the conversation when Fletcher brings up that Roger had said he still loved Holly. Hart tells Dinah that he just wanted to help Dinah – which I don’t think is really true, but for the sake of future story I’ll believe it.

Roger is eating with his lawyer Leo Flynn at the diner. The diner is totally jumping now, Elaine is in charge, and I have NO idea what time of day is this supposed to be other than they’re not eating a normal breakfast. Leo sends up a line saying this first thing Roger…Ross will ask for is a financial accounting and as Roger has stolen all of Dinah’s money that isn’t good. Roger is sure he can talk Dinah back, but she heard the sincerity in Roger’s voice when he said he loved Holly. Alan and Buzz are blustering at each other when Brent returns to the chat with the news he shot A-M.

Hart tries to cheer up Dinah pointing out all the other people that Roger fooled and that Hart himself had been the biggest fool. Hart retells her his story and how his grandfather raised him on Yates. Hart: “The woods of Arcady are dead. And over is their antique joy.” Ross turns down seconds on the appetizer that Blake made and Ross and Fletcher both threw their appetizers into the fireplace when Blake wasn’t looking. I guess Blake isn’t that good a cook. Holly is concerned with Meg’s future. Blake tells Holly about her baby concerns.¬†Blake’s outfit is really cute, but I just can’t stand how Holly keeps talking about how great Fletcher is and how she can trust him. The only woman he never abandoned was Maeve and that was just because she died before he got the chance. Fletcher broke my heart when he broke Claire’s and never did a thing to make it up. ¬†Alan and Reva think Brent has brain washed Lucy, but Buzz recognizes she’s conning him to buy time. Alan negotiates with Brent and when it starts to go wrong Buzz panics.

Frank is at the diner, but he can’t eat. Eleni has made sandwiches for the other cops. Eleni tells Frank she was wrong to be opposed to Frank becoming a cop that he was meant to be one to help save Lucy. Brent leaves and A-M begs Lucy to quit playing this. Lucy tells him it’s her plan and it’s meant to buy time so they can survive. Dinah says she loved Roger. Hart to Dinah: “Roger isn’t worth your tears.”¬†

Roger shows up at Ross and Blake’s carriage house looking for Dinah. Meanwhile at the Jessup Farm, Hart kisses Dinah. Buzz is upset. Both Buzz and Alan agree that the money is bait to lure him out into the open. Alan intends to kill Brent. A-M tells Lucy that the reason Brent is reacting to her strangely because he’s feeding her into the role his mother played in his life.

Thurs., Feb. 1, 1996

The Grants are having a family dinner and Griffin Williams shows up because Charles invited him. Hart and Dinah were still making out, but he breaks away. Roger tells everyone at the Bloss Carriage House to stay out of his life.

Hart kisses Dinah and we’re not sure at this point whether he’s playing Dinah or not. I don’t think Hart is entirely clear either. Griffith is showing off with stories of his work in the Civil Rights campaign and generally being kind of obnoxious.

Vivian does NOT want Griffith to stay in town. Nola sets up Jay to get his car locked up so he can’t take it. It’s pretty Nola-esque caper with Nola, Marcus, and Bridget. Roger hits a little close to Folly and Bloss and then declares that Dinah’s love for him will make their efforts to break them up useless. Meanwhile¬†Hart declares he loves Dinah.

Nola and Bridget work on going through Bridget’s¬†closet to see if she can deal with her closet and her life. Bridget: It’s “a big pile of maybe, a bigger pile of no, and not many yeses.” Now explain this to me. Why would anyone ever want Hart? I mean how does this guy get people to constantly have 2 women fighting over him. Dinah denies Hart could love her. Charles offers¬†Griffin a fellowship to teach a political science for a semester at Springfield University. Jay and Marcus hang out. Did chariots have driver license requirements? Interesting Question. Roger shows up to beg Marcus to forgive him to save his marriage.

Holly wonders if Roger isn’t a little bit right about why they went after Roger. Roger makes a case that Marcus should forgive him. Dinah and Hart continue to talk about his relevation that he told her he loved her.

Bridget confesses to Nola that she wants Hart, but she’s afraid. Nola is very supportive. Bridget about Hart: “He walks into a room and I start to feel goofy… and then I see him with Peter and I think why not? Why not try to be a family.” Gillian tells her dad that her mom has been way out of line (which is kind of teenager like of her, sure Vivian didn’t act like Griffin staying would be Christmas morning, but she was perfectly polite). [Spoiler alert the woman Griffin hurt was her and she’s upset because Gilly is Griffin’s daughter and she doesn’t want anyone to know.] I don’t know why anyone would pick that African name over hearing him say Vivian. I might change my name to Vivian to hear him say that too me, he just rolls it through you. Dinah and Hart discuss what’s going on and then that bed is all too close.

Vivian asks Griffin to leave for her sake. Bloss have a heart to heart about their fertility issues. Dart starts to have sex for the first time.

Friday, February 2, 1996

Dinah wakes up in Hart’s bed the morning after. We Finally get back to the kidnapping. Alan has collected $10 million and is working with Buzz to offer it to Brent.

Lucy continues to play a part to survive and protect everyone. Alan insisted that Lucy be included before Buzz could object she wasn’t included. That’s why you never give up on Alan. Just when you give up on him he does something stand up like this.

Dinah and Hart are still in bed when Roger shows up. I wish Roger’s fear was that he’d lose Dinah, but it’s that he’d get caught stealing her money. Alan and Buzz work together which is always great.

Lucy works on picking a lock. Griffin comes in and joins Vivian and Gilly at their breakfast table. Vivian admits to Gilly that she and Marcus had an affair years ago. Dinah doesn’t regret sleeping with Hart, but isn’t sure what she wants to do from here.

Griffin comes to Marcus and tells him he wants to improve their relationship. Marcus having taken a backseat to everything else his entire life has no interest. Frank comes in and finds Reva. Frank tries to get the truth out of Reva. Frank: “Why doesn’t anyone ever tell me the truth?” Alan picks up the phone and Brent is there. He tells Alan he’s on A-M’s yacht. Buzz and Alan do a verbal dead drop.

Vivian tells Gilly about what happened between her and Griffin. Marcus explains that he doesn’t hate Griffin he just doesn’t know him and he wasn’t there when he needed him. Alan and Buzz work together and Buzz tackles Brent. Dinah tells Marcus about Hart and how good the sex was.

Marcus was OK with Dinah being with anyone other than Roger until he learns that she’s moving on with Hart. Hart sadly was using her – mostly – to get back at Roger. Brent tells Alan and Buzz they have to let him go. Alan-Michael and Lucy discover a bomb.

Final Brent Lawrence Terror Part 2 Jan 22 thru Jan 26 1996

December 30, 2016

Picking up from the last post Brent Lawrence has Lucy. That’s the major storyline to me in this next section, but we get some great early Rabby and early Dart stuff. Also, Marcus is cleared, the Reva back from the dead custody fight is going, Matt is blackmailing Amanda into leaving Bloss alone over their experience in California with an escort service. Comment blocks below include clip description, quotes, and my comments.

Monday, January 22, 1996

Abby kisses Rick. Rick insists it’s a practice date. Abby thinks it’s more. Hart takes Dinah’s drink in face. Roger calls the station and tells him all about the Brent/Marian story. Brent hears Michelle and J and goes to investigate. Lucy hears them and yells for help.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQm_D9QjJsI (Part 1)

Brent grabs Lucy to silence her. A-M waits for Brent to control. Amanda offers support. A-M says that he doesn’t want to risk including Frank in his plan to rescue Lucy. Amanda says he has to include the¬†cops. Alan shows up at the office to find out what’s going on. Michelle heard it, but not clearly and lets J talk her into it not being real. Then J makes up a ghost story to scare her. Brent approaches with a weapon, but decides they are not a threat when they make out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBl_NBYDOuU (Part 2)

Abby apologizes for kissing Rick, but he says it’s OK. Rick says he taught Michelle to dance. Abby ran off feeling embarrassed. Hart continues talking to Dinah about Roger. I’d say that neither Dinah nor Hart give a true portrait of Roger. They are both right and wrong. They do angry banter very well. Dinah calls Marcus and asks him to come to Towers. For reasons best known only to her, Gilly has decided to date her mom’s old lover. Holly and Fletcher arrive and overhear Roger. More great banter. Michelle and J continue to make out, but break apart when he starts reaching under her clothes. Brent overhears and rushes back to a hog-tied Lucy refreshed in his belief that every girl leads guys on and then backs off.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPF1Gsky4Bw (Part 3)

Brent bring a knife to Lucy’s throat, but then pulls back not to ruin his plan. Brent tells Lucy how sick it made him to watch J and Michelle (who he doesn’t know). (Kind of made me a little sick too, seeing Michelle kiss someone else in her and Danny’s lighthouse). Alan offers to reach out to a top computer expert to help track Brent, but A-M doesn’t trust the offer. Brent video chats in with more threats. Frank plays an analyzed tape to see if it was Roger. Neither Holly nor Fletcher is 100% it’s Roger. I don’t know how they couldn’t be from the tape alone it’s definitely him. Holly about Roger: “He’s always using fake accents.” Roger stops by Spaulding and finds one of the packets Amanda had put together about Marian Crane. I’m really kind of surprised. Roger can be a jerk, but not when someone innocent’s life is on the line.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgPvzKmiTkA (Part 4)

Rick says he and Abby need to talk about the kiss. Abby shows back up in her Amish clothes. After spending the entire day with J, Michelle came back after dark. Michelle is upset that their date didn’t go well. Griffin feels put upon that Marcus doesn’t rush over to see him. Knowing about Lucy, Marcus is horrified that Roger is about to put out the story to endanger Lucy. (Actually Griffin your description of Roger sounds more than a little like you.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k05-b5nZx44 (Part 5)

Rick starts going off after J. Michelle drags him back. They have a short argument, but then come to terms. Michelle offers to watch a movie with Rick. Rick leaves to get more popcorn. Abby asks Michelle what happens. Michelle believes J’s garbage that it was her fault for leading him on and then pulling back. Cleary finally decides that instead of just taking guesses, they could do a voice print. Hart, Holly, and Fletcher decide to tape Roger¬†and Cleary recommends they go down to the spy store to get equipment to tape it. Marcus tells Dinah she needs to find Roger and stop him from endangering Lucy. Griffin and Gilly speculate wrongly about Roger and Dinah.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bvBLShpZmc (Part 6)

Lucy manages to free herself of restraints. However, Lucy can’t get through the door. So Roger walks into Towers and nobody runs over and tries to get him to call and stop it? Rick and Michelle run across Roger’s WSPR news story. Brent sees himself on camera, just as J spots him makes the ID and yells.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noKgEf6sM58 (Part 7)

Tuesday, January 23, 1996

Around town people are watching the news story. OK if Roger didn’t know about Lucy this makes more sense. Lucy works on getting the door open.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rn2lLoj0PJA (Part 8)

J tackles Brent, but the Mall Cop believes Brent when he accuses J of stealing his wallet and Brent slips away. Michelle said she dropped J off at Springfield Mall and the Bauers have the TV on to watch the movie. This is dovetailing really well. Alan and Amanda try to stop A-M from running off and ripping out Roger’s heart when he learns Roger’s news story might be endangering Lucy. Lucy gets the door partly open and is met by a combination lock and tries to think what the combination might be.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpJDjunpRR8 (Part 9)

Abby volunteers that she saw Det. Cutter and Marian Crane the night she was in the hospital and Rick and her went for a walk. Rick insists she has to tell the police. Actually I don’t think Roger would have played the story¬†if he’d known about Lucy. He might be telling the truth. I thought it was out of character that he did. Roger protests he didn’t know about Lucy and says he wouldn’t have done it. Nick and Susan show up and support A-M. The date of the rape was the combination. Lucy gets into the room and gets on the computer. “Faith comes into our lives on four legs…” She gives proof it’s her, but the tranmission is cut off “he’s holding me at….”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_E59gvEseg (Part 10)

The chief demands to know who told. Cleary confesses she’s the one who told Roger. This time Frank doesn’t let her off the hook. J was dragged in and Nola showed up. J tells Nola that he’d spotted Brent Lawrence. J swears on his car that he’s telling the truth. Nick and Susan talk A-M down from despair. Brent catches Lucy and freaks out. Brent announces he has to kill her and in desperation she hugs him.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7v9GwI44HI (Part 11)

J tells Frank and the Detective Levy everything. They believe him and Nola is proud of him. Michelle and Abby show up and Michelle apologizes to J. Abby tells Frank that she was Det. Cutter and Marian Crane together at the dock which helps confirm Brent’s role. Frank forgives Cleary. Holly is set up to record Roger. Holly pulls Roger away to get her recording. Lucy tries to talk Brent into thinking he convinced her that his view on what happened was right.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3gNdv-XWJM (Part 12)

Dinah goes storming into her and Roger’s apartment upset that everyone blamed Roger when all he was doing was trying to help her friend. Frank shows up and tells A-M about what happened at the mall. A-M assumes Brent caught Lucy, but he didn’t. Lucy says what Brent wants to hear that he didn’t rape her.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fY5_arp6ctc (Part 13)

Frank tries to time out how far out Brent was holding Lucy from the mall. Lucy keeps repeating she’ll do whatever it takes to survive. Hart and Marcus talk about Dinah’s inability to see Roger’s crimes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MnMwcEZlig (Part 14)

Wednesday, January 24, 1996

Alan returns to the house he bought Reva. Alan is upset thinking Roger might have cost Alan Alan-Michael. Reva comes in bubbling with happiness about Marah and Shayne and Josh and Alan lashes out. Roger deposits some of Dinah’s money in an account in only his name (by a guy trying to do some kind of accent I think). Holly and Fletch show up at Roger and Dinah’s apartment – Penthouse A- saying them have proof Roger set up Marcus (which he totally did).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRLtIyh_yjg (Part 15)

Dinah,Holly, and Fletcher keep talking through her front door. Hart and Marcus continue to talk about Dinah. We drop in on Gilly and Griffith’s date (which considering his prior relationship with her mother is kind of gross on both their parts). Hamp is welcoming guests and since Ross is running late, Amanda and Blake end up sitting side by side at the bar. Reva understood Alan’s attack and is very supportive of him. Alan won’t let it go though accusing Reva of being more interested in Josh despite what she says. Meanwhile Josh is upset about Marah, but Annie questions whether he’s more concerned about Marah or Reva?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBt4bP-02dE (Part 16)

Reva pleas with Alan to understand that she needs to be there with her kids and claims it has nothing to do with Josh (Liar!). Josh denies that it’s Reva’s he’s concerned about. Annie and Josh are romantic together. Marah sneaks down and takes Annie’s book to add to her Annie collection. Amanda comes out straight and says that she wants Ross and will do what it takes to get him. Amanda tells Blake that Ross knows Amanda wants him and that she’d already dropped a fur coat with nothing underneath for Ross’ benefit. Holly and Fletcher shows Dinah the evidence. Dinah supports Roger until he hears the recording of Roger telling Holly he can’t get her out of his system.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Namby74Wdw (Part 17)

Ross shows up excitedly and announces Marcus is cleared. Roger walks back in and expects Dinah to back him, but not this time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkFhX_jv3iQ (Part 18)

Dinah spits out that Roger set up Marcus. Dinah faces up to the fact that Roger still loves Holly and calls him out on it. Hamp saw the set up evidence and says he’s dropping the theft charges. Griffin: “There are other ways than direct confrontation.” Josh makes a move on Annie who asks about the kids first and as usual Josh is wrong, they aren’t asleep. Alan comes down and finds that Reva is setting up a seduction. AND this is where Jeva turn truly evil in their actions, Reva and Josh could have walked away from Annie and Alan at this point and no harm, no foul, but no they both swear they love the one they are with severely messing them up.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVanjavteks (Part 19)

Amanda calls for a toast in Ross’ honor. Roger desperately tries to drive away Dinah’s doubts, but this time Dinah has it. Sadly Roger just sounds sickening.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFEvKB0UF6U (Part 20)

We get an Annie/Josh and Reva/Alan montage. Dinah storms off while Hart watches from a distance.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23gUWSRK1q0 (Part 21)

Thursday, January 25, 1996

We start with a nice exterior shot of the Land of Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams house. Annie is feeling great because she thinks Josh was making love to her out of desire for her and not for the desire to hurt Reva. If Josh would have come clean right now, they wouldn’t have broken her. Alan is having similar feelings about Reva on their morning after. Matt and Vanessa are also waking up in bed together. Meanwhile Blake is awake and upset and angrily wakes up Ross. Note: This is a lovely bit showing Ross and Blake’s bedroom.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWs0ZW1tbEo (Part 22)

More bedroom at beginning. Blake tells Ross Amanda told her about the time Amanda had striped in his office. Amanda is alone at the Spaulding Mansion and not feeling too good either. Amanda has a her and Ross fantasy. Alan asks Reva to try to make peace and get shared custody. Reva agrees to try, but before she makes it to the Land of Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams Marah’s therapist calls with a sudden opening and rather than wait until next week Josh takes her in leaving Annie there to deal with Reva.

https://youtu.be/dyoEGZrMZis (Part 23)

Ross is not properly contrite and gets mad when he feels Blake has unjustly accused him. Reva actually plays nice, but when she finds Marah is at a therapist (Dr. Julian) at Cedars she starts to storm off, but Annie stops her. Alan meets with lawyer who withstood Alan’s attempts to buy her off. After Ross storms off, Blake rushes to Vanessa and Matt’s interrupting them in the bedroom to beg Vanessa for advice.

https://youtu.be/mnK37N4DilY (Part 24)

Annie and Reva continue to argue about Marah. Ross goes to Amanda to find out why she wound up Blake and pushes Nettie aside to find Amanda in the Spaulding study in her skivvies while a dressmaker measured her.

https://youtu.be/8P2dqdNkCDk (Part 25)

Blake tells Vanessa what Amanda did, dropping her mink coat in front of Ross. Vanessa: “Well that’s not very original.” (One of the most famous Guiding Light scenes is Vanessa doing that to Ross.) Madame Elliot is the designer. Ross tears into Amanda. I really can’t believe the best way to have the session with Marah is to have Josh sitting there staring at her the whole time.

4:39 Marah’s therapy session

https://youtu.be/SH7LHzmfd9U (Part 26)

Reva bursts in and Marah leaves with the doctor while Josh and Reva tear into each other. I actually don’t think the beeper thing is a bad idea, but the fact is Reva is WAY more concerned over what she wants rather than what’s good for Marah. AND then Josh makes it about himself and loses sight of the kids himself. Ross defends his wife to Amanda and tells her to back off.

https://youtu.be/Iw_REFgOxaI (Part 27) – 123

Annie and Josh bring Marah home and she’s still upset. Marah is about the only soap child they show the effects on them. This period was when Reva wore the prettiest clothes. I just don’t see Vanessa ever wearing those scruffy tennis shoes. This must have been her midlife crisis. Amanda does have a pretty big secret. Not one that fits with the character of Amanda, but it’s a pretty big one.

Friday, January 26, 1996

Blake and Vanessa discuss her issues with Amanda. Matt was also part of the secret. Really Amanda, no way Matt believes he’s going to out you and not out himself. We finally get back to fact that Lucy was kidnapped way back on January 1st. Don’t worry, Lucy isn’t stockholming, she’s scheming.

Brent does a great job describing LAM’s love, but Lucy tries to convince him it isn’t true. I still don’t understand why Lucy was ever snowed by Marion enough to think she was her BEST friend. Blake really does have a self esteem problem and I guarantee Amanda didn’t mean give Ross a child. Matt assures Amanda that she has a lot more to lose than he does, that his relationship with Vanessa wouldn’t be hurt by it.

Someone really should have taken the time to push Amanda’s bangs out of the way, it looks terrible. Alex comes in and is surprised that Amanda¬†has the safe open. Alex couldn’t. Amanda explains she changed the combination. Oh Amanda, you don’t show somebody the original you’re blackmailing someone with. He could grab it and take off. Ross and Blake show up at the doctor’s office for their appointment with Dr. Sedwick. Lucy seems to convince Brent to leave Alan-Michael out of his plans and video chats in to tell Alan-Michael she doesn’t love him, the rape never happened and she wants to be with Brent.

Alan-Michael realizes that Lucy was lying to get Brent out of town and away from A-M. Amanda and Alex fight about control at Spaulding Enterprises. Blake and Ross both get clean bills of health for fertility. She think Blake’s stress levels is what’s causing their issues. Dr. Sedwick suggests Blake talks to Dr. Ames, a psychiatrist. Frankly I think it sounds like a good idea.

Bloss talks about other options to therapy when Blake resists therapy. He suggests taking another cruise like their honeymoon. Blake is excited, but then Ross suggests they need to stop trying to get pregnant to get Blake to a better place first. Matt returns home considering telling Vanessa who is all adjutated about Amanda and how she is going after Ross. She tells Matt that any man who would have anything to do with Amanda was dirt. (Matt, who was involved with Amanda, thinks Gulp!)

Alex calls Vanessa and tells her that Matt left his magazine there showing the house that he is going to build for Amanda. When Vanessa asks him about it Matt admits it’s a lie. Vanessa asks why was he really there. Amanda goes into Spaulding Enterprises and is being very supportive of Alan-Michael. Brent contacts Alan-Michael by chat and tells him to come alone. Brent is going to call A-M at the phone booth on 5th Street where Patrick Cutter was killed.

A-M: “Do not call the police because you’re going to be risking Lucy’s life!”

Amanda: “But what about yours?”

A-M: “My life isn’t worth anything without her.”

Matt tells Vanessa that he just told Amanda to back off and that Amanda covered for Blake. Vanessa is thrilled Matt is so wonderful. Brent comes in and tells a waiting Lucy that they have a celebration to attend before they leave town. A-M goes down to the Spaulding Enterprises parking garage and the man Frank left to keep tabs on A-M reports in when he gets into his car and leaves. A-M is wearing a cloth cap that does him no justice. He’s parked on level 5 and is driving a nondescript new sedan – I can’t tell brand.

New Years 1990

January 1, 2016

Warning the sound on this is clear but VERY low. Crank your speakers all the way up.

Capture1

This year the place to celebrate New Years is Lakeland Country Club. Sadly I don’t have a lot of this, but I’ll look for more and in the meantime enjoy this clip.

Alexandra and Roger are still together. Roger is cheating with Mindy, but Alex doesn’t know. I always thought Alex being THIS concerned with Mindy rang false, but it of course was part of the build up to make the betrayal worse.

Alan-Micheal found out that Blake had lied and she wasn’t really pregnant which was the main reason he had married her when he did. He still feels rather protective to Blake and that’s why he offers to be the one to leave his family home.

Holly is mad at Alex¬†because Alex had a plan to use Holly to check Roger’s fidelity. I can’t remember why he didn’t. I’m not sure if this was before Roger’s love turned to resentment for being constantly emasculated or if Roger was already with Mindy or if he knew it was a trap. Anyone else remember? Ross broke up with Holly when he found out. Wow! Blake sure looks awful. The turban doesn’t really suit Holly either.

This episode aired Р October 24, 1994.

Several stories going on today and most of them aren’t part of the party umbrella. Matt is accused of some crimes and can’t tell where he was because he and Vanessa were having a secret affair.

Michelle gives a toast. Sadly those good feelings she’s talking about won’t arrive until 1999.

“So I want to make a toast to Ed and Eve, my dad and to all those good feelings our family is going to have.”

Someone spiked Ed’s drink. As a recovering alcoholic this was a terrible thing. Alan made an entrance to announce his return to Springfield. Dr. Bauer seems a bit formal for the brother of his ex-father-in-law whose been his neighbor for a good 20 years. This does bring up something I don’t get. They always kept all this alcohol around Ed where it would be easy to slip or make a mistake. While do they do that?

Commercial break after opening credits contains an ad for the Roger Thorpe videotape. This and Reva’s counterpart were the only authorized sales of Guiding Light footage until the Soap Classics releases. Watch it here:

Wow! I would have said if Ed had a problem with Alan it would have traced back to his destruction of Hope rather than that stupid affair that Alan had with Rita while she was involved with Ed – they weren’t all that into each other anyway. Even

For some reason soap hopping soap star Marcy Walker failed to click as Tangie (maybe it was the stupid name?). This was their latest hail Mary pass they are in the early stages of an Alan-Michael-Tangie-Alan triangle. It’s really too bad because Alan-Michael truly believed in Alan and was truly working towards a positive relationship and Alan pulls this.

Really for as smart as they normally play Matt, if he said he’d been to the movies, he should have picked one currently playing at a local movie theater. I think Matt is waiting for Vanessa to step up, but she doesn’t. Gentlemanly Matt doesn’t out her.

Time to get sick over Ed and Eve while he pretends she’s his only true love who has “changed me so completely. You’ve changed me and I can’t ever go back to what I was. I am a complete mess without you.”

The back of Blake’s dress reminds me of a peace sign without the circle. Oh, Eleni you haven’t been to very many parties at the Country Club if you think that this party breakup is anything but typical. No party ever goes well there.

12:00 in another great chance to see Ross-Ed as best friends rather than just hear that they are. “a couple of swallows” wouldn’t an alcoholic know after it hit his tongue? I am proud of Ed to want to go to an AA meeting. I think this might be his biggest hero moment ever. Really don’t understand Ed’s extreme reaction to Alan’s very existence. It wasn’t like this when Alan left.

I think Matt’s story is stupid. He was being stupid if he didn’t know that someone “influential in that town” was married. Plus, his father’s sister was had a brother-in-law (Mike Bauer) who is one of the top lawyers in the country. Wouldn’t asking for help make much sense? Plus, why not cop to being with a woman without naming who. Once that much came out he might as well. So Matt saved Marina’s life too? Maybe she was injured in some of these “life savings” that could be what’s wrong with her later.

“I haven’t had a chance to tell Eve about the drink yet.” – Yes, Ed you were only completely alone talking about what had just happening in a semi-private hallway.

This is so typical Blake. “You know I can’t believe that Eve treats him for a gun shot wound and in matter of days he manages to drag his sorry but out of bed and come over here and crash MY party.”

Ross: “Last thing I need is for you to turn into Paul Revere and go through the town of Springfield warning all the good folks.”

Actually I do agree Alan didn’t meant to “hurt” Blake he meant to stop Phillip from marrying her at all costs.

Fletch does have some good lines “while the caviar is hitting the fan.”

I’m really sorry Alan showed up at Ed’s party. It was truly typical Alan, but it hurt Ed and I don’t think A-M would have stood by like that. While A-M wanted to support his father, he wouldn’t have hurt his Uncle Ed like that.
