Guiding Light Cast Roundup 81

May 24, 2018

This is the eighty-first in an irregular feature where we will report updates on what cast members of Guiding Light are doing now. I’m playing catch up on some soap magazine news. So as a reminder you can buy back issues:

Bethany Joy Lenz (our dearly beloved Michelle Bauer Santos #4) guest starred on Grey’s Anatomy. The episode is called “1-800-799-7233.” It’s the winter premiere of the second half of the season (Season 14, Episode 9) and originally aired January 18, 2018. Her character’s name is Jenny. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt7043736/

Morgan Englund (Dylan Lewis, Billy and Reva’s son who ended up with Bridget) is the subject of a where are they now feature in the July 3, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest. After GL, Englund wanted to go into music, but he was a single father so he decided he needed something more regular. Following in Dylan’s shoes he became a first responder and then part of the fire department. Then in 2017 he decided to try to get into music again. About his connections to the Guiding Light cast he says “I just talked to Melissa Hayden [Bridget Reardon Lewis] yesterday because she’s hopefully going to be involved in some way with the video. We connect every couple of years and want to do something together. And every time I see Kim [Zimmer, Reva Shayne Lewis], we’re right back to where we were before, so there’s a lot of love there. I loved working with her and Jordan [Clarke, Billy Lewis]. Maureen Garrett [Holly Reade] and I also exchanged messages recently….GL didn’t hire just any people; [they cast] mostly theater actors, like [the late] Michael Zaslow [Roger Thorpe]. They were amazing actors to work with. I feel very fortunate.”

In the May 14, 2018 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth Sharon Newman’s Crimson Lights gets a shout out because – unlike Company in the last couple of years – people actually pay for what they eat. Go Sharon!

Joseph Campanella (a criminal named Joe Turino) died May 16, 2018. Campanella was an incredibly busy actor appearing on many shows on daytime, primetime, film, and the stage over the decades until his retirement in 2009. Guiding Light was his second regular series role and we was on between 1959-1960. I have to idea who this character was. I’m glad we got the name, but if anyone has more details, please share.

Back in the February 8, 2000 issue of Soap Opera Weekly featured Jean Carol (Nadine Cooper, Harley and Frank’s mom) talked about her latest movie Scream Queens: A Musical.

Laura Wright (Cassie Layne #1, Reva’s long lost sister) talked about her time on Guiding Light when her character stayed with Edmund when they were trying to get pregnant and impregnated Dinah Marler. Brian Mertes, who was my director on Guiding Light, taught me that I can justify absolutely anything as an actor. He wouldn’t let the stay in the no and he taught me to just go for it. He’d say, “We have to do this. So why would your character do it? I’m not the actor who would say, “That doesn’t make sense to me,” or put in changes or complaints, ever, because I sill justify anything you hand to me.” Read about it in the February 26, 2018 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

The 1997 Time Capsule round up article in the July 3, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest list these turn over in the TPTB at Guiding Light: Paul Rauch took over as executive producer, succeeding Michael Laibson; Head Writers Michael Conforti, Victor Miller and Nancy Williams Watt were replaced by James Harmon Brown and Barbara Esensten; and the show celebrated major milestones; the 60th anniversary of its radio debut and the 45th anniversary of its move to TV.”

The 2003 Time Capsule round up article in the February 26, 2018 issue of Soap Opera Digest list these turn overs in the TPTB at Guiding Light: John Conboy was named EP, and Millee Taggart resigned as head writer, succeeded by Ellen Weston and Donna Swajeski.”

A spooky story round up in the October 30, 2017 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth includes the end of the Cleva (Reva’s clone) story complete with photo. It also has photos of David Kimball (Killer carved in his forehead) from The Young and the Restless and from As the World Turns the James-Barbara-Gunnar time travel story and Shannon O’Hara return from the dead despite her shrunken head storylines.

In the July 24, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest has a close up photo of Vincent Irizarry (Lujack/Nick McHenry) in his disguise he wore for the end of his role on Deimos Kiriakis on Days of Our Lives. Ellen Parker who played Maureen Reardon Bauer #2 announced she was in the independent film called Ties to Rachel that was then seeking a distributor in the May 27, 1997 issue of Soap Opera Weekly.

During the heighth of the Annie-Reva feud around when Annie faked Reva pushing her down the stairs, Suzanne Schwarzer (GL’s then costume designer) found a company called Annie Reva (in a total coincidence). She bought several of their pieces for the cast. Read more about it Soap Opera Weekly issue May 13, 1997. The article also spells out the complicated shooting of the actual fall. It mentions stunt woman Janet Paparazzo, director Bruce Barry, and stunt coordinator Peter Hock. It also looks as if Reva could actually be charged (it hasn’t happened, but hypothetically it could).

The May 27, 1997 issue of Soap Opera Weekly did a Where Are They Now? feature on Val Dufour. He left acting right after he left his role of attorney John Wyatt on Search for Tomorrow in 1980. He gave this great quote. “But the real challenge is the development of the characters and the day to day movability of it, because the writers change. I once told Mary Stuart (the last Meta Bauer on Guiding Light) that we should have been given an award for rewriting.”

Bauer BBQ 2008 UPDATE 2016

July 6, 2016
Rick and Jude Bauer, 2008

Rick and Jude Bauer, 2008

Previously I was able to post both the whole episode in one piece and in sections. However, both links have gone dead, a hazard of the grey market, so I am reposting it. I think this is missing a little bit, but it’s most of the episode. I’ll keep a look out.

If it wasn’t the intention of TPTB to zero out the central Bauer family, they did a pretty dang smash up job of doing exactly that anyway. This was the second year in a row where the Bauer BBQ wasn’t even held at the Bauer House. Maybe that’s why Rick seems so out of it in his planning in 2009? Maybe he was out of practice?

Anyway during the Bauer BBQ in 2007, Beth (who thought she was pregnant with Rick’s child via their pretty hot affair while he was married to Mel – wish they hadn’t rushed through so much of it in one “Inside the Light” episode) impulsively married Rick. Their marriage fell apart over two big problems. 1. Rick had found out that Beth’s daughter, Peyton Spaulding, wasn’t his (Cassie changed the paternity results to keep the child away from Alan, partly from revenge for Tammy and partly because she believed Alan was a danger to the child) and didn’t tell Beth. 2. Beth really never got over Phillip. Rick was never enough. Beth wanted Phillip & the closest she could get was adding Rick & Alan (which when you think about it would be pretty darn close to Phillip) so she waffles back and forth trying to have both for quite awhile. Her next attempt at romance would be with a young writer who made her feel secure, Coop Cooper (anybody else still sensing the not really over Phillip yet pattern in that?).

Lizzie’s comment to Alan about Gus is because while Gus is dead Alan thinks he’s been getting messages from him. He uses his “powers” for good and to raise capital. However, it is later revealed that it was really a medical issue that almost killed him. Alan falling down the basement steps is a further symptom of this illness.

Crash (Cassie and Josh) are tiptoeing around each other as they try to get over serious arguments about life decisions Cassie has been making. However, what she really needs is serious counseling over Tammy’s death and what she allowed to happen to Will and how her decisions impacted her sister. Lacking that their marriage never stood a chance. Ironically the true love of Cassie’s life, Richard, denied this very help to his brother Edmund which is why Edmund spent the last 10 years tormenting Springfield.

They threw us a Bauer bone though. I appreciate the call at the beginning from Ed and Rick sending his love to Danny, Michelle, and the kids. They really did do a good job implying Rick spent a lot of his time off camera in California spoiling Robbie and Hope rotten, teaching Robbie magic tricks, and using Hope as an excuse to still do childish things.

Dinah had arranged to take over Spaulding Enterprises and the Spaulding Mansion as part of an elaborate plan to get revenge on Alan and to prove that she wasn’t somebody to be pitied after she recovered from the brain damage she received taking a bullet to save Mallet’s life. She turned it all over to Bill who kicked the Spauldings out even though he was strongly drawn to Lizzie. He was ambitiously trying to run for Governor with his “perfect” family. The day before was Bava’s wedding. Lizzie told him right before the ceremony that the child Ava was carrying wasn’t his. Ava slept with Bill, Remy one time, and visited a fertility clinic. Bill chose to marry Ava anyway who he saw as the ideal partner for being a power couple and because he didn’t want to give up the child whether he was the biological father or not. Once the baby is born it is clearly Remy’s.

I don’t remember why the Spauldings are living in Harley’s house, except they were kicked out of the Spaulding Mansion by Dinah Marler and TPTB didn’t want to have to build another set. I don’t remember what the official excuse was. Harley was on the run with Rafe (Gus’s long lost son) after Rafe, in what can only be described as a fit, shot Jeffery O’Neill for blackening his father’s name (which he wasn’t doing). They are currently hiding in Greece.

Watch for a few scenes of Rick actually parenting Jude. Blink and you might miss them. After the years we spent watching Rick yearn for a child to carry on his special relationship with Bert. Did these writers ever, you know, ever actually watch the show? (Shakes head.)

Why would Gus want the Spauldings at the BAUER BBQ? Gus’s relationship with the Bauers was love-hate at best. Danny he eventually settled down to a prickly friendly-ish relationship, but Michelle didn’t like him, Rick hated him, and Meta isn’t there. Phillip would have wanted his family at the BBQ, but I think Gus would have been happier to have them at a Cubs game.

Also, listen to Mallet’s speech which is a good one although I don’t know why he’s the one who’s making it. They really thought Mallet was the person to make that annual speech. Mallet? Really? Even Josh made more sense and Rick was freaking standing RIGHT THERE!

I didn’t catch that the first time. Cassie and Marina both made cherry pies (nobody made Bert’s apple pie this year?) and Mallet totally dissed Marina saying how great Cassie’s was. That was worth watching right there! I truly despise her. I got so sick of them trying to push Mallet and his GODDAUGHTER/WIFE Marina down our throats. Next comes Bizzie-Bava tension, Rick and Beth starting to make up, and some pretty darn explicit Lillibuzz.

Previously I had both a multi-part version and a full episode to link to, but they have both been taken down. I don’t think this is quite the whole episode, but the way they were editing episodes at this point. It’s kind of hard to tell.

Part 1 – People prep for BBQ, Spauldings decide to have their own, A mixed up Bill reaches out to both Ava and Lizzie, Rick shows up to everyone’s delight

Alan falls down the stairs and decides that they should all go to the BBQ anyway because Gus would want them to. Remy realizes that Ava wanted the governors mansion much more than she wanted him and is understandably upset because they have been a slow burn romance the last year or so at least. Alan references Alan-Michael parachuting in, but misidentifies it as having happened at the Bauer house (the BBQ was held at Johnny Bauer’s hanger at the Springfield Airport that year). Alan wasn’t there though, so I guess he can be excused. This is the part where we finally get a couple of scenes of Rick actually being a parent. That’s the best part of this. Then we end with a speech and a montage of everyone playing in bouncey houses that apparently they got because the show house doesn’t have a pool.

Harley and Frank Meet Buzz

April 16, 2015

frank-cooper It’s Eleni Andros and Frank Cooper’s wedding on 5th Street:

https://glmanny.wordpress.com/2015/03/23/eleni-and-frank-wedding

A shifty man with an earring and an accent shows up and is overly interested in Frank and Harley. Harley IDs Buzz as a man who hit Mallet on the head while he was riffling a storeroom and Mallet almost caught him. Something else entirely is going on and Harley pulls a gun Buzz knows isn’t loaded to prove her point. Just then Eleni went into labor. With Mallet’s prompting Harley realized “Rex Marcini” is really Buzz Cooper.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73c76okKiVc

After their conversation both Harley and Buzz end up at the hospital where Eleni has just given birth to Marina. This clip is made up of scenes from several days. After the Frank-Buzz confrontation they shift to happy Eleni-Frank stuff. Marina Nadine Cooper was born on screen on May 8, 1993. Frank doesn’t seem to realize who Buzz is, but lets Buzz hold Marina.Buzz: “I have two kids.” (So Lucy doesn’t count? I know she wasn’t invented yet.) That is a nice Frank-Buzz story Buzz tells and frankly before that cut face to face I wouldn’t have said they locked a like, but zoomed in on the faces like that, they do.

Eleni and Frank Wedding

March 23, 2015
Eleni and Frank wedding

Eleni and Frank wedding

You are cordially invited to the wedding of Frank Cooper and Eleni Andros on May 7, 1993. It was held on 5th Street which was closed for the occasion.

Bride – Eleni Andros

Maid of Honor – Harley Cooper

Bride maids (who walked down the aisle together for some reason) – Kat Speakes and Julie Camaletti

Groom – Frank Cooper

Best man – A.C. Mallet

Mallet and Frank discuss his wedding speech for Eleni. Frank remembers the day Nadine told him Buzz was dead and how he had to be the man of the house now when he was 8 years old. Eleni has a moment with her grandmother. Ad for the wedding.

 (Part 1)

Fifth Street is being decorated for the wedding. Nice best friend exchange between Frank and Mallet. The Coopers are so beloved on Fifth Street that everyone turns out to decorate the closed down street to hold the wedding. More nice Frank/Mallet and Frank/Harley stuff. That car stuff was important because at the time Frank was kind of classic car obsessed and for him to care more about what Eleni looked like than the cars meant a lot. Eleni was very pregnant with Marina (her and Frank’s daughter) when this wedding happened. This was when Mindy was an active fashion designer and she did Eleni’s dress and had to take out some of the extra material in the seams to make it fit. This is towards the end of the fairly disastrous Dylan Lewis/Julie Camaletti that had began when they were trapped in an elevator during the Great Springfield Blackout where she helped him through his claustrophobia. Sadly that was their highlight. Despite the obvious pregnancy, Eleni at this wedding was one of Guiding Light‘s most beautiful brides ever. Just look at that dress. Eleni stops at the end of the aisle to greet friends and family, including Michelle and Ed Bauer.

The minister is giving a speech about how everyone on Fifth Street turned out to make the day special for Frank and Eleni. Meanwhile Buzz skulks

around the edges. At this point none of his family know he’s alive, but Harley will discover it later tonight. The priest (probably Eastern Orthodox) calls out family connections. He points out Michelle as Bea and Tom Reardon’s granddaughter. We get so used to thinking of Michelle as a Bauer, it’s nice to have her associated with the Reardons too. I must admit this is the smiliest wedding I can remember both Eleni and Frank can hardly grin wide enough. Great pull back shot to Alan-Michael watching from afar. Frank starts to read his written vows, but it’s too dark under the twinkle lights to read them. Someone yells get Frank a light and they pass up a flashlight, but Frank decides not right and gives up his pages written speech and instead speaks from the heart.

Frank: “I wrote a speech like I won a contest. It wasn’t really that great. I get suspicious of people who make promises….[unintelligible] Going around saying they’re doing something instead of just doing it. I mean, what does that mean? So what I say to you, Eleni, is what I am to you tonight I will always be. Because I don’t know any differently. Because I just love you and honor you and I will for the rest of my life.  Those promises are easy to keep. I hope I’ll be a good father. I know I’ll be the proudest father any child could ever have and you will always be safe in our home with me. If every night the flood comes and washes our home away then every morning I’ll build a brand new one for us because I love you. I love you with all my heart, my mind, my body, my soul. I mean I should just tell you things that are harder to do…. Eleni with this ring, I’m your husband.”

5th Street Dressed For Wedding

5th Street Dressed For Wedding

Eleni: “Frankie, you are so patient and kind. There is nothing you cannot ask of me. I would fight for you. And all these people they all love you so much, they would do the same thing too. I will be a loyal wife and a loving friend to your friends. I will teach our children the gentleness and goodness that you have shown me. I will love you with all my strength always. I will defend you from discouragement and fear. When you are sick, I will make you well and when you are sad, I will make you laugh with my crazy heart. Our home, it will be I will be safe and warm and honest and always welcoming. I will make it a palace for you, my, my king of Fifth Street. To work hard, to be generous and to always be honest and forgiving that is what I learned from my family. These things I promise you most, Frankie, and as the years go by and we grow older when my hair is grey and all our children have all grown up and all our promises are kept, this love I have for you will shine in my heart stronger than any star. With this ring, I love you so much. With this ring, Frankie, I am your wife.”

Priest: “…..I now pronounce you husband and wife.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MunLGi48EM (Part 3)

Frank is lifted on the crowd’s shoulders and carried away around the square. Eleni is give a champagne flute of milk in honor of her delicate condition. Mallet gives the best man speech which he starts with a terrible joke and makes a series of more horrible joke until he turned serious and tells them how Frank and Eleni were made for each other. Harley makes a Maid of Honor toast.

Harley: “Generally a woman does not go chasing through the jungles of Malaysia for a man unless she really means it.”

Frank throws the garter. It lands on Ross’ glasses and catches there. Frank and Eleni dance their first dance to “You Are So Beautiful To Me.” Eleni throws the bouquet.  Jenna catches the bouquet and definitely is NOT friends with Vanessa yet. Frank and Eleni seemingly oblivious to the dancers that surround them. An anonymous donor drops off 500 hot steak dinners for the crowd.

Christmas 2008

December 25, 2014

This year’s Christmas clips are from December 24, 2008. Depressingly this is the last Springfield we will ever see for ourselves in Springfield. This episode gives a good example of how Guiding Light worked in 2008. The pacing is incredibly fast, both with how fast plot points sprint by and within individual scenes.

Reva Shayne Lewis and Jeffery O’Neill who are currently living in Cross Creek’s cabin which has been relocated to Springfield. They are hosting the Lewis family Christmas. This is during Reva’s miracle cancer, postmenopausal pregnancy. The result will be Colin, her miracle baby.  Jeffery gets out a stocking that he has glittered penned “Miracle” on for the baby. The tradition of reading “A” Christmas story, not “the” Christmas story, which one changed every year, actually comes from the Chamberlains. There are some references to H.B. reading the Christmas story from the Bible, but that wasn’t every year. In fact, a version of the A Child’s Christmas in Wales that Natalia gives Emma was even used at least one year. H.B. Lewis and Henry Chamberlain shared the duty until after Henry Chamberlain died. Vanessa even picked it up for awhile after H.B. didn’t return to Springfield for Christmas anymore, but the reading was a Christmas tradition so I’m glad they did it this year.

Billy Lewis is also worried about Bill and Lizzie, who he has grown very close to after he hired her at Lewis. He asks his friend Buzz (who has been friends with since Billy got out of jail for shooting Roger) and who is going around dressed as Santa today for some reason, to give Bill a pep talk and it works.

The last time Dinah Marler returned to town she had a plan to prove she was not less because of her brain injury. Dinah still is having trouble and hence her trouble doing the greeting.  Her plan was to take over Spaulding Enterprises for her half-brother Bill who she felt was the only family member who hadn’t abandoned her (or died). The plan worked (it’s why Bill and Billy are living in the Spaulding Mansion), but once given the reins Bill didn’t see the need to continue to listen to Dinah’s plans anymore and she felt jealous as much of Bill’s focus turned to true love Lizzie. Frustrated Dinah unfortunately had hired Daisy’s thug boyfriend Grady to do simple tasks and he decides to kidnap Lizzie. Dinah isn’t too happy about this, but doesn’t end it at once after she finds out. Once Grady realizes he’s going to take the fall for this, he frames Bill instead. Dinah was upset, but couldn’t do anything about it without outing herself. Having made friends with a returning and equally troubled Shayne, together they decide to burn the shed (?) that houses police evidence without checking to see if anybody is inside. This destroys the evidence Grady planted and if I’m following the throw away line right, injured Ashlee’s mom Doris.

At this time Dinah is back to running WSPR, but most of the station seems to have disappeared. We get a handful of studio shots like this one and one near the end where Vanessa is in an editing booth, but most of the work of WSPR is now being done by Dinah’s assistant Ashlee Wolfe including writing and editing which apparently she does on her laptop no matter where she happens to be.

Harley and Gus’s house is finally finished, but Gus is dead and, after her actress left the show to go to AMC (where anyone who is mad she left Guiding Light should know the score was evened), Harley took off to hide and protect Rafe in what apparently is now a non-extradition country, Greece. Rafe came back and Harley didn’t. It doesn’t make much sense (and honestly why didn’t they bring Haley Barr Sparks – who provided Harley pregnancy coverage twice before – to finish the storyline up in some better, sensible way I’ll never know), but that’s what they’re stuck with. You also get the feeling that they seem a little bit resentful about her leaving. I’m surprised she even got that short of a phone call in. What you mostly get is Frank calling her “My sister” and Buzz calling her “my daughter” and only on rare occasions where plot kind of forces them too. Also, they cut her off, off screen as well as on so now Daisy, the kid Harley did all this stuff to keep in her life, wants to be in it and Harley totally blows her off and won’t let Rick see his kid either. Mallet and Marina are married now and when Harley decided to sell her house, they decided to buy it, but apparently she really gouged them because two full time professionals who would otherwise be paying rent, can’t seem to scrape up the money to make the payments (hence the budget over Christmas presents talk).

Lillian and Buzz are dating and because of Lillian wanting Beth there, Alan and Peyton (recently revealed to be Alan’s bio daughter after all – when everyone thought for a long time she was Rick’s) are there too. I’m not entirely sure what Beth was doing, maybe slipping out to see Coop? That was an awfully long bathroom break, although it’s true when you’re just holding a kid, how could you get a chance to excuse yourself?

The best bits of the episode are the nice moment of friendship between Billy and Buzz and the cute Bizzie videochat, but most of all Dinah’s Christmas speech which does turn out to be good, especially on top of Buzz’s lovely Christmas toast. Also, look at the end of part 3 where they do the 2008 production model version of the classic holiday endshot.

This first bit is a highlights reel. Below that are two parts that add up to about 20 minutes of the the 37 minute episode, some of the missing part is in this highlight reel, with some stuff repeated. The third part is from a Marina and Mallet channel (who knew?) and also should be from this episode or the one right before or after.

Reva and Jeffery are getting ready to host the Lewis family for Christmas. Most of what’s added scenes have to do with Shayne bringing Dinah to the Lewis family Christmas. After everyone arrives, Billy declares it’s time to pick up H.B.’s tradition to read the Christmas story. (Note: This situation is true to life. It sometimes happens to even large families there may be a series of years where you don’t have any young kids between generations.) Billy picks up a picture book of the Christmas story to read it. During the story is a montage of everyone around Springfield that year, including Buzz in a Santa suit. (Note: That in previous years the Lewis family would have several large trees that swept the ceiling. Apparently now they are down to one sad little box whose contents they have memorized – they can tell what ornaments aren’t on the tree.)

We come across Dinah still struggling with her post shooting trauma struggling to come up with a Christmas greeting. Olivia had wanted a designer Christmas, but Natalia set up an old fashioned Christmas at the farm. It’s the Christmas Emma has always wanted, but Otalia are still are struggling with unwanted feelings. Shayne shows up and supports Dinah, but she doesn’t want to go to the Lewis Christmas with him because Jeffery will be there and she and Jeffery share a complex past. Buzz shows up to play Santa to Bill when they run into each other at the P&G convenience store after Billy asked him. (Remember Billy and Buzz are friends since when Billy got out of prison for shooting Roger.) Natalia brought a Christmas tree to the jail where Rafe is being held for shooting Jeffery because he blamed him for Gus’s death (which was kind of stupid, Jeffery did a lot of awful stuff, but not that).  Emma goes missing sparking a confrontation between Otalia. Just then Frank calls. Emma had ended up at the police station.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z41Cke-5LjY (Part 1)

At the Lewis Christmas, Billy decides it’s time to pick up H.B.’s tradition of reading the Christmas story. There are no little ones list year, but he thinks they should still read it anyway.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-mOGyrSEsY (Part 2)

Mallet and Marina are celebrating Christmas in their house. They each get each other the same universal TV remote. They had to Company and discover Beth, Alan, and Peyton are there at Lillian’s request. Buzz gives the Christmas toast. (Out of order with the top two, but should be in same episode or one on either side of this.)

On the Set of Guiding Light

October 1, 2014

They say:

“A Documentary that aired on PBS station NJN in 2009 that takes you behind the scenes of the classic CBS Network Soap Opera “The Guiding Light” with Justin Deas, Crystal Chappell, Beth Chamberlin and Ricky Paull Goldin.”

When this was originally posted Frank Dicopoulos (Frank Cooper) objected. He had hoped to sell it to other PBS stations. I think at this point that is no longer a concern, so I’m going to go ahead and do this post pointing to it.

They take you through the process for episode 14815. It’s when Beth has Alan and Gus captive. It was shot sometime between December 29, 2005 to March 10, 2006 during the storyline. Although it was aired in 2009, it was actually shot before the format switch.

Guiding Light Cast Round Up 68

September 28, 2014

This is the sixty-eighth in an irregular feature where we will report updates on what cast members of Guiding Light are doing now. I’m playing catch up on some soap magazine news. So as a reminder you can buy back issues:
https://glmanny.wordpress.com/2014/06/07/faq-back-issues-2014/

The Sept. 22, 2009 issue of Soap Opera Weekly was focused on the end of Guiding Light.

Blake’s 1997 nightmare over her twins having two fathers (with Rick and Ross in baseball uniforms and Blake wearing a Scarlet Letter) is featured in the “All Star Scrapbook” of the Nov. 4, 2013 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth. Liz Keifer (Blake Thorpe Marler #5) is quoted as saying “Oh, I loved that! The guys were referees, where they dressed up in baseball uniforms! I have this shot! This is the only shot I have framed from Guiding Light.. Up at our lake house, we have it up on this one wall! I love this – I think that was my favorite storyline.”

The 10 years ago story flashback in the August 25, 2014 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth is Jeffery O’Neill trying to scare Dinah Marler out of town before she reveals to Cassie how he used to impersonate Richard, sometimes even in her bed. See photos and more details in CBS Soaps in Depth.

A photo flashback roundup of characters back in on screen high school includes one of three of the Four Musketeers from 1983. It’s in the Sept. 8, 2014 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

There was a special feature in the Aug. 22, 2006 issue of Soap Opera Weekly. It featured a special episode where they had a food fight. There were two special guests in that episode. One was Dave Price, then the CBS The Early Show‘s weatherman (what they were calling their morning show). Price is quoted as saying: “I’d like to think of myself as a permanent guest star on Guiding Light. This is my third or fourth appearance. I’m not a braggart by nature, but if you look back at the soap opera’s 70-year history, those three or four appearances really stand out.” Also, Frank Dicopoulous (Frank Cooper)’s real life wife, Teja Anderson, played a reporter posing as a blind date for Frank. See photos and read more quotes in Soap Opera Weekly.

Emme Rylan (previously credited as Marcy Rylan) (Lizzie Spaulding Lewis #6, part of the wonderful Bizzie pairing) is shooting a Kickstarter backed project called Shevenge.

Laura Bell Bundy (Marah Lewis #5 who started Marony) was pictured in the soap style round up in the May 19, 2014 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

There was a catching up article with Jordi Vilasuso (Tony Santos #1) in the Aug. 22, 2006 issue of Soap Opera Weekly. He talks about leaving the show and his new role gangster Eddie Zarouvian. “I didn’t want to do soaps anymore. I left GL because I had done it. I wanted to pursue other ventures. What I like about this show is that there’s a beginnin, middle, and end. On daytime they just regurgitate storyline over and over.”

John Wesley Shipp (Kelly Nelson, part of my beloved Kelly and Morgan) starred in the 1990 CBS version of the Flash and will now play the father of the Flash in the new series. It will first air staring Tues., Oct. 7, 2014 on the CW. See a photo and more details in the Sept. 8, 2014 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

Karla Mosley (Christina Boudreau, with Remy, one of the last really good new couples in the final years of Guiding Light) was featured with her mother Shirley in the mothers round up in the May 19, 2014 issue CBS Soaps in Depth. The August 25, 2014 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth announced that she self-published a book of haikus. Read more about it in CBS Soaps in Depth. Buy it here:

Kassie DePaiva (Chelsea Reardon, Maureen and Nola’s little sister) talks about her background as a singer, like her Guiding Light character, in the Sept. 8, 2014 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

tweeted a link to a YouTube recording (with the lyrics on screen) of “Don’t Put Dirt On My Grave Just Yet” by Hayden Panettiere (Lizzie Spaulding #2, the little girl who survived cancer and killed Beth’s abusive boyfriend).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03RHq3IV

Cynthia Watros (Annie Dutton #1) was interviewed in the Sept. 8, 2014 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth about her recently vacated role on The Young and the Restless and her role in Finding Carter.

Victoria Platt (Vicky Spaulding, Alan and Alex’s half-sister Victoria Spaulding’s daughter, from Brandon’s island marriage after he had died on screen once) was pictured before she gave birth at the L By Jennifer Love Hewitt Launch Party. See a photo in the May 19, 2014 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

Frank Grillo (Hart Jessup #5, the final Hart that was torn between Dinah and Cassie) appeared at the cinema Society and Gucci Guilty’s screening of Captain America: The Winter Solider. Find an awesome photo of him there in the May 19, 2014 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth. If you want some classic Grillo look for a Christmas 1998 J. Crew catalog. He had a two page spread.

Judi Evans (Beth Raines #1)  is featured in a sidebar in an article about fear of typecasting in the Sept. 22, 2014 issue of Soap Opera Digest. Evans talks about her different soap roles and how she tried to play different characters.

Terrell Tilford (David Grant #3, brother to Gilly, son of hospital administrator Charles, friend to Bridget, coupled with Vicky Spaulding) and Victoria Platt (Vicky Spaulding, Alan and Alex’s half-sister Victoria Spaulding’s daughter, from Brandon’s island marriage after he had died on screen once) are expecting their first child, a girl very soon. Tilford talks about finding out it was a girl in the August 25, 2014 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth. Platt and Paula Garces (Pilar Santos) were included in a fashion round up of recently pregnant soap actresses from that same issue.
Tilford is also interviewed about his painting and the art gallery he had in the Sept. 8, 2014 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Crystal Hunt (Lizzie Spaulding Lewis #5 brought in Roxie the dog and romanced Coop) and Kim Zimmer (Reva Shayne Lewis)  both will appear in 34 Blast a movie opening Fri., Oct. 3, 2014. The title has changed slightly since Hunt announced it on Twitter. Read about it in the August 25, 2014 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.
Zimmer is also featured as one of the hot shots in the August 25, 2014 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth. From my classic collection, the August 22, 2006 issue of Soap Opera Weekly includes a small article, including photo of Zimmer as Mama Rose in Gypsy.

Did you know Anthony Addabbo (Jim LeMay, Susan/Daisy’s adoptive father) was the same guy who played Jonny Carrera/Rush (the guy who held Lauren Fenmore and Eric Forrester hostage after their plane crash back in 1998 on The Bold and the Beautiful)?

Jacob Young (Rick Forrester on The Bold and the Beautiful) hosted a charity event. Among his B&B castmates who attended were Zach Conroy (James Spaulding #2, part of the lovely Jaisy pairing) and Lawrence Saint-Victor (Remy Boudreau). See photos in the Aug. 25, 2014 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Laura Wright (Cassie Layne Winslow) is interviewed for a what were you like in high school roundup in the Sept. 8, 2014 issue Soap Opera Digest.

Guiding Light September 18, 2009 Remembered

September 20, 2014
Last Episode at Park

Manny Last Episode at Park

I have been wanting to watch the last two weeks of Guiding Light again in real time. It ended up being a bad time for me to do the whole thing this month, but I’m going to finish out the week in honor of the five year anniversary of the final episode. In each post, I looked for a bright spot in the cancellation and also look for the line of the day which is in many of these posts.

Final Episode – Sept. 18, 2009

NOTE: During the last couple of months of Guiding Light, I did a daily feedback and summary post. I had just started my blog and it was an early experiment that helped establish my style. I put comments and summaries on the same storyline together, with time tags to the different parts of the episode. I put the official CBS link at the end. Sadly that is no long viable so I’m going to put the YouTube link at the beginning instead. The time codes are for a full episode load and so won’t match, but should still give you a rough idea. Also the parts are on a playlist in the wrong order, so you have to watch or it will jump to different parts of the last week, if you don’t watch it. Once again I put the most important stuff (Manny and the Bauers) at the top.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCLkuCAWsXw

22:51 The Bauer-Santos family is having a picnic at the park. Manny is on a blanket and Mindy and Rick are horsing around. They spot Phillip and Beth coming from a distance and Mindy goes to hide as Robbie and Hope run up to their parents. Hope plops herself on Michelle’s lap and Robbie sits where he can look with hero worship at his father. Phillip and Beth seem thrilled that Manny is back. (Then again who isn’t? –  joyful sniff). Phillip always did see Michelle as another little sister. But it only gets better when Mindy pops out and tells them she’s staying.  Line of the Day – Rick: “The Four Muskateers Ride Again.”

27:45 – 1 Year Later – Manny, Phillip and Beth, and Rick and Mindy are all in the patio/formal garden courtyard of the Spaulding Mansion. Everybody notice that Michelle has DANNY wearing PINK today. Guess they are really are one person now. 😉 Danny makes a toast to Rick and Mindy. Rick and Mindy are getting married tomorrow and Phillip is serving as the best man. (I wonder if Danny will be an usher? They certainly seem to be of the bridal party even if Danny is a hair underdressed.) Manny is fully accepted as one of the group and Danny and both Phillip and Rick seem totally at ease with each other. Michelle insists they get a group photo. [I hope they post that one to the website – sadly they didn’t 😦 ] Manny is safe, they are happy, they are in sync, they are in Springfield, they are accepted, they are home. THANK YOU! If we can’t see them, we can at least know that, for sure, forever.

35:01 During the Happily Ever After Montage, the group at the Spaulding Mansion share a champagne toast. It just feels so right. This is where all belong, together.

Today’s episode started with a short montage of various openings they had over the years and the motto, “There is a destiny that makes us family.” [Minute 0] As I’ve mentioned before they’ve been updating the opening montage every single day for awhile now. Today included most of the cast’s photos (no Manny ;-(  ) and they seemed to suddenly remember that they these were not individual characters, but families. If they had remembered that earlier, maybe they’d done better these last few years. [Minute 4]

The Cooper family and various extensions and hanger on-ers are gathered at Company, still discussing names for the new baby. Frank admits he has a date. James and Daisy come in and she announces she’s going to Berkley, like now. Ashlee and Daisy had planned for years to go to college together, but this Berkley business was leaving Ashlee behind. Doris calls Ashlee down to her office and as a good will gesture she got Ashlee admitted at their writing program, so they can still go together. This is a real big thing for Doris who has previously gone WAY out of her way to destroy every relationship Ashlee had with anyone else. [Minute 1] Ashlee tells Daisy they can go to college together after all. [Minute 4]

Remy and Christina are worrying about being legally married before the baby comes, so they are looking for Mel. [Minute 2] Mel is still otherwise occupied, but for some reason answers her door anyway. In a sheet. The door opens farther and they see Cyrus naked in Mel’s bed and Remy ACTUALLY asks, “What’s he doing here?” Yeah, Remy is DEFINITELY material for the SFPD. [Minute 5] They get all the Coopers over to the police station and Doris performs a quickie legal marriage and then they all rush over to say goodbye to Daisy and Ashlee. [Minute 10] Daisy and Ashlee are driving. So they need to take off now. (Daisy really needs to quit wearing that pair of shorts unless she’s alone with James in private.) Reva and Billy make it for the send off too. Marina, as usual, shows her selfless nature, “You know you’re leaving me alone to be the only Cooper girl.” James and Daisy exchange “I love yous.” I don’t remember them actually saying it before. [Minute 17] Blake and Frank both hurry off, not realizing they are going to meet each other. [Minute 18] They meet on the bridge and slowly it dawns on them they are meeting each other. [Minute 20]They decide they’ll try dating. (Why not, they’ve already worked together twice and slept together, was it just once or more, well never mind.) [Minute 21]

Lizzie and Bill are talking about whether Alex welcoming Fletcher back in her life is a wise idea. Lizzie doesn’t know Fletcher, which is right, she was in Arizona with Phillip and Beth and before that very, very little when Alex was with Fletcher. Bill does know Fletcher, which is also right. He was his best friend’s (Ben Reade) father. Still they haven’t mentioned the elephant in the room, Ben.  Fletcher overhears and says he promises to keep Alex out of trouble. Yeah, right Fletcher, you never could control her and you usually didn’t bother to try that’s why the relationship lasted longer than about any of your other ones. Phillip and Beth come in and seem glad, in a long time no see kind of way, to see Fletcher. [Minute 2] Lizzie is still upset about Alex leaving, partly out of concern, partly out of having to face another goodbye. Alex has been the family member closest to her the last few years and they bonded, first over their involvement with Cooper men (Alex with Buzz and Lizzie with Coop) and later over similar life experiences. Although they again never said explicitly (ARGGGH), both of them had their children taken away from them and were unable to raise them themselves. (Alex had Lujack and Nick McHenry, their father who was a creep extreme, sold Nick and off a bribe from Brandon – I’ve mentioned he was evil – kept Lujack from her.) OK, FINALLY, Bill tells Fletcher he misses Ben in their last conversation before he leaves.  Alex comes out packed to go on the trip with Fletcher. She promises to come back for Phillip and Beth’s wedding. She pauses as she gets ready to get into the car, looks back at her home while a myriad array of emotions and memories play across her face. She pulls herself in with a ragged breath, winks and blows a kiss to her family before leaving again on her next big adventure. [Minute 6]

Phillip and Beth are together talking at the mansion. Phillip: “This feels weird. I’m the oldest Spaulding living here now.” Notice behind Phillip there are actually family photos on the mantelpiece. There haven’t been family photos on any of the sets (except for Reva’s nutso Jeffery memorial)  in ages and here’s a whole row of them. Beth gives Phillip a blank book and encourages him to express his feelings in writing like he used to. Beth and Phillip kiss and then the phone rings. Phillip says “Always” ruefully and goes to answer it while Beth laughs. (I think that’s a soap opera convention joke, but you have to be a Manny fan to truly understand the pain of the dreaded phone call/interruption – Mannyacs should have bought them an answering machine. 😉 )[Minute 19] The phone call is Rick and he tells Phillip he needs to come to the park. Rick tells him everybody is here and now would be a good time. Good time for what we wonder? [Minute 20] (See the Bauer-Santos Report at the top of the page) Besides the good news above, Phillip is glad he’s in the park because he meets up with James and they seem to be in a good place now and toss around the Frisbee. (Alan and James had bonded over playing Frisbee when the SORASed James returned to town.) [Minute 24]

Jonathan, Sarah, and Reva are playing at Tammy’s cottage. (That kid is a real chatterer, Tom seems to be getting sick of it.) Josh calls Reva and asks her to meet him at Cross Creek. [Minute 3] Josh and Reva meet up. She announces that the old truck they’ve been driving around all week was H.B.’s.  Yeah, right where have they been hiding that to keep it in fully restored condition all these years? Reva and Josh flirt and he tells her his new plan is to go down and oversee the addition of the new wing on H.B.’s memorial veterans hospital (this is the reason Cross Creek is in Springfield now, they built the hospital on the original Cross Creek site, supposedly as H.B. had always planned (rolls eyes), this is was also the project they used to bulldoze Josh and nuCassie to be together with when Reva was pushing him away during her cancer scare – no, it really didn’t make sense when it was happening either). Reva cries at the thought he’s really leaving. Josh mentioned this was the latest version of his plan. Reva asks if there was another one in the middle and he admits there was. He was going to kidnap and marry her. [Minute 9] Reva reacts to the news by walking off sobbing. Josh catches her up and apologizes for telling her. She tells him she’s glad he did. She still loves him too, but she’s just not ready to commit to him again right now. She’s still dealing with too much.  He tells her he understands that, that’s why he’s giving them both some distance, but one year from today he plans on being at the lighthouse at noon. If she’s ready for him then, she should be there. Until then, he’ll be loving her. [Minute 12] Billy arrives, but misses Josh leaving. Billy asks Reva what she will do when the time comes. She doesn’t know, but I think Billy does. [Minute 15]

Bizzie, Jonathan and Sarah are all playing in the park together. Jonathan takes Sarah down to feed the ducks. Bill says he was afraid that now that Sarah was back, Lizzie wouldn’t want a baby with him, but she tells him not to be nuts. She wants children with him. She loves him. Aren’t they sweet? Bill looked so vulnerable when he asked that and it’s great that actually talk about their fears, you know like you should in a relationship rather than leave them to fester like they did before. [Minute 22] The Cooper entourage arrives in the park with all the stealth of a herd of elephants to spy on Frank and his date. Guess they closed Company again, and they are still surprised they have money troubles? When they see Frank and Blake together they go over to give them a hard time. [Minute 22] While hanging out with her family, Marina tells Shayne she’s gotten him that coaching job at the high school. (Yes, schools always hire baseball coaches when the season is over, but I guess for Marina they do.) [Minute 23] Remy, Christina, Mel and Cyrus must have gotten over the strangeness in their earlier meeting in her room and are hanging out together in the park. They share the baby news. [Minute 24]

Mindy is still in town. She’s hunted down Billy to tell him she’s made a decision. All her trips home this year have convinced her she’s sick of living in exile in Paris. She wants to be home with her family and friends and she’s decided to stay in Springfield. They are both very happy. [Minute 8]

Maureen tells her Dad Matt that he ought to be dating, too. [Minute 5]Maureen is in a play. She sets up her dad with the drama teacher. Yes, because Matt needs more drama in his life. [Minute 16] Otalia talk about how happy they are. They decide to name the baby for Frank. [Minute 11] Otalia runs into Frank and Blake and tell him they are going to name the baby Francesca, after him. [Minute 22] Reva and Olivia talk about Josh. [Minute 25]

Flash Forward – One Year Later

Now pay close attention because this goes real quick. Yes, I know they got us all ready for Thanksgiving and then totally skipped it. I’m just reporting here.

Shayne is coaching a nearly championship high school baseball team. Marina and Shayne appear to be together and she has “Biggen” calling Shayne Papa which is kind of wrong since that what they were having him call Mallet, but we know Marina isn’t too big on ethics anyway. [Minute 26]

Billy asks Jonathan to be the foreman on Lewis Construction’s newest project, the new Springfield elementary school. I think Jonathan calls him Uncle Billy, but he kind of mumbles so I’m not positive. Boy, he never did that. He must really be feeling like family. The second he put down Sarah she ran off (Yeah, I think Tom is totally over working with this kid). Bizzie shows up and after months of playing it down Lizzie is really padded out. She calls Sarah over to feel her little brother kick. I guess it will be H.B. 4th. Christina and Remy arrive with their new baby son Clayton, named after Remy’s father. Lillian and Buzz go all mushy over the little tyke.  [Minute 26]

Cyrus and Mel are still together. Cyrus and Remy are working together still in the SFPD. Heaven knows that just the last two episodes have shown that Remy needs someone to help him.  Frank is giving them a new assignment. Blake walks up with baby Francesca in her arms and she and Frank are still together. Frank: “How come she has two mommies and I’m still all stuck changing the diapers?” Buzz tells him they are picking up Rafe who’s coming how on leave.  He’s coming home by bus. (Come on, Olivia’s his step mom now, she could spring for a plane ticket or rental car.) Their family is all at the bus stop picking him up and all seem very happy. [Minute 27]

James is out at Berkley visiting Daisy and Ashlee. They are all actually wearing clothes, which is a nice change and honestly I don’t think I’ve ever seen Daisy look so happy. [Minute 28, Minute 34]

Mallet and Dinah have all their old sync back. They’re traveling around Europe together and having fun and being light hearted. Dinah playfully and softly calls out Elaine a la “The Graduate.”  They are stopped at a church and Dinah is peeking in at a local wedding. She and Mallet banter back and forth. She tells him she loves weddings and he tells her he knows, it’s why they’ve stopped at every single church in Europe. They seem almost giddy being together without any of the garbage they had to deal with before. [Minute 29, Minute 34]

The whole town is together and playing at the ballpark. Everyone is happy and there are couples and babies everywhere you look. [Minute 34] A Happily Ever After Montage with brief looks at each group begins to music.

Jonathan and Billy, still at Shayne’s ballgame, speculate on whether Jeva will reunite today. Josh arrives at the lighthouse (one we’ve never seen before by the way). Reva and Collin (who looks way more than 1 year older, I wonder if this is some cast or crew’s kid again?) start slowly walking towards the lighthouse. Josh sees them coming and he can’t wait. He jogs, practically running over to them. Josh: “I wasn’t sure if you’d be here.” Reva: “Oh yes, you were.” [Minute 30] All is literally silent as he comes over. Then suddenly, Good LORD, it’s their couple THEME music!!! We haven’t heard their theme music (or anybody else’s) in years!!![Minute 32] Reva and Josh reunite. Reva: “If you still want to be together, I’m in.” Josh (smiles, his happy full of himself smile): “That’s a good thing.” Then he takes her face in his hands and kisses her deeply.  About the final shot is the one Kim Zimmer fought for. Jeva together and kissing with the lighthouse in the background. So for once TPTB kept their word after all. [Minute 33] Jeva and Collin are going to go on an adventure. Reva brought their stuff, she knew Josh would have an adventure in mind. Reva (in a broken whisper, with one arm around Josh and the other around her youngest son, I think partly says to us): “Come on, let’s go.” (OK, I’m crying now and I don’t even like Jeva.) They walk up to H.B.’s pickup, give each other a long smiling look, get in and drive off. Josh (to Reva): “You ready?” Reva: “Always.” [Minute 35] The truck drives down a road. You can see the lighthouse rising above the trees behind them and like a classic, old movie the words “The End” come up on the screen.

And we’ve lost our way to Springfield forever. Goodbye, Farewell, Amen.

P.S. If this leaves you wanting more, please read my fanfic of scenes leading up to and surrounding the finale here:
https://glmanny.wordpress.com/2009/11/03/springfield-bound-the-finale

P.P.S I wanted to repeat this portion of my analysis of the new format.

Pacing of scenes – The last few months I was doing a daily summary of the show (you can find those descriptions by clicking on the July, August, and September 2009 blog entries) and from that experience I can tell you that a long scene was a minute, most were less than that. The last two days I thought something was wrong because I didn’t have as many times in my descriptions. I realized that it was because the average length of the scene had approximately doubled to roughly 2 minutes. The short scenes were supposed to be compensating for the lack of a an ability to block on smaller sets (again from a quote from Wheeler), but even lengthening the scenes by that much (let’s face it 2 minutes is still a pretty short scene) improved the pace rhythm and flow of the show to a marked extent. Watch an episode, even from early on in that last week and then one of the last two days and see if you don’t agree. This length and pacing was an executive decision, not one forced by money or circumstances and was clearly a wrong one and was not one that was experimented with, even though there was just over a year and a half in which multiple things could have been adjusted and tried.
