Morgan N Englund Music Video Fundraiser

May 14, 2018

Morgan N. Englund was part of one of my all time favorite couples on Guiding Light, Dylan Lewis and Bridget Reardon.

Englund’s Project

This video talks about his project, what he did after he left Guiding Light, and why he is making the move back to music now. It kicked off the project. He’d professionally written the song, but then wanted to shoot a video. He started an Indiegogo project. Sadly he didn’t make his goal of $10,000 though at over $8,000 that was kind of close. Read more about it in his interview in the July 3, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

(Find a fan interview from Paula’s Soapbox. Warning: His video audio track is significantly softer than hers and the video is shot from an odd angle from a laptop camera. Englund talks about his memories of shooting his first scene that was on location in upstate New York. He was supposed to get Marah a kite out of a tree and the branch he stepping on snapped and he fell out of the tree having to make sure neither he, nor the branch hit “Marah” and kept going with the scene. 🙂 Near the end of the video he tells stories of being recognized as Dylan by people he’d showed up to help. Part 2 starts with him talking about coming back at the end. He remembers Michael Zaslow (Roger Thorpe) and Vince Williams (Hampton Speakes) who influenced him greatly. Part 3 talks about problems in his life and then picks up on how his Guiding Light connections and fans are still helping him. Part 4 he’s working with the LA Fire Department Foundation fund for helping raise money with the song. Englund reminds us that famous doesn’t equal rich. Part 5 he talks about his bamboo flutes, Betty White teaching him to knit, and his discovery of Gilligan’s Island lagoon.)

Now What’s Going On?

The project didn’t get funded, but Englund hasn’t given up on his music. He now has snippets from 5 professionally recorded songs on his website and has started doing shows. You can sign up for his e-mail list to catch his schedule. He also makes and sells bamboo flutes.

Live Performance in concert

A Famous Connection

Englund’s mother is the famous actress Cloris Leachman. Leachman is probably best known for her role as Mary’s neighbor Phyllis on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and as in her own spinoff (if you know Mary you just HAVE to watch the opening for Phyllis, all the way through it’s the punchline that’s so good). Another prominent role was as the replacement for Mrs. Garrett in the last couple of seasons of The Facts of Life.

Leachman gives a quick (under 2 minute) interview about her reactions to Englund’s career choices.

Bauer BBQ 2017 by Robansuefarm Part 3

July 7, 2017

Author’s Note: We continue with the Bauer BBQ. There are more people around than I’ve specifically named. Fell free to mentally insert any favorite I’ve skipped. Feel free to write in what your fav is doing.

Bauer BBQ 2017 by Robansuefarm Part 3

Scene 12

Back in the kitchen, a commotion sounded at the door. Rusty Shayne and Wanda Hite arrived bearing the necessities for Oklahoma BBQ. Rusty had made the trip up from his ranch near Tulsa. He barely got his load down on the kitchen table before Mindy threw her arms around his neck.

“Melinda Sue,” he said happily. “Are you doing as well as you look?”

“As fine as an Oklahoma sunrise. How are you doing?”

“Oklahoma is still less fun without you, but the ranch is doing fine.”

Rick came in a pulled a grimace. Most of Mindy’s ex-es he didn’t much mind. In fact his best friend Phillip was one of them, but Rusty was the one whose relationship went back with Mindy longer than Rick’s. They had grown up together as kids. It was her one relationship that he felt might be as strong as theirs. Rusty and Mindy had grown up together as kids. Rick was happier when he stayed down in Oklahoma where he belonged.

Rick swallowed and walked over with his hand extended. “Rusty,” he said. “Thanks for bringing the Oklahoma BBQ. I know it makes Mindy happy and people have come to expect it now.”

“Don’t mind me and Earl. We make no never mind.”

Mindy jumped in. “Wanda, now you know we see you and Earl a lot more often than we do Rusty.”

Wanda helped balance her load on the back of a chair as she paused. “Where do you want us to set up?”

Billy came in. “Rusty, what are you doing by letting Wanda stand there with a heavy load. I’ll take that.”

During this exchange and the ribbing, a woman with long, black hair pulled into a tight bun. She was dressed too formally for the party in a black suit. She quietly worked her way behind the happy group and edged into a dark corner of the patio.

Scene 12B

The Indian motorcycle continue to drive south. He passed a green highway sign saying, “Springfield 172 miles.” He gunned it around a black suburban and hurried on.

Scene 13

Beth and Phillip had the art auction entries each set up on their own easel along the edge of the patio. Each had a number that matched a description in the glossy printed guide.

Clarissa Marler and Maureen Reardon had the children’s art station all set up. They grabbed kids who arrived early and set them to work on the mural.

Mindy had come out to make sure her fashion drawing she’d donated for the auction looked right, but she had been caught by the sight of the kids playing. It yanked at her heart reminding her of the baby she’d lost and the children she and Rick never had.

Rick had caught Mindy’s expression across the patio and came up behind her. “It looks like they could use some help. Why don’t you dig in there?”

“You think so?”

“I know so. No one spreads sunshine like you do.”

Looking cheered up, Mindy dived into the kids. She started helping a girl make a dog she was painting look a little less like park bench.

The woman with the tight bun had reached the artwork going straight to the painting from the Spaulding attic. She looked the painting over very carefully. She moved back into the shadows and pulled out her cell phone. She pressed a saved number. “It’s definitely THE painting…..No, not yet. I will try to get it before the auction starts. She abruptly ended the call.

Scene 14

Molly Spaulding came rushing into the Bauer kitchen nearly running into Blake and then Buzz in the process. Her dad, Alan-Michael Spaulding, was hot on her heels. “God Dad, stop hovering. I go to college for heaven’s sake. I don’t need you looking over my shoulder all the time.”

“Princess, will you wait up. I wasn’t hovering I was….”

Both continued through the kitchen and out the back door to the patio.

Lucy came in a troubled expression on her face. Frank intercepted her with a hug. “What’s going on, Sis?”

Waving towards the door, “You heard. Molly thinks Alan-Michael has been overly protective and it’s smothering. You know he always was protective, but lately…”

“Did something happen?”

“Well, he went to visit Hope earlier this month…I’m afraid she’s not doing well. Alan-Michael can’t do anything to help her so he’s determined to keep up safe. He knows I can take care of myself, but he’s even been a bit hover-y with me and he’s way overboard with Molly. Then there was her boyfriend.”

“What about him?”

“Tom got a little aggressive with her, enough so she filed a police report.”

“Oh, what did you say his last name is? Does he go to Springfield U with Molly?”

“Yes, he goes to Springfield U, but don’t worry about putting the fear of God into him. Besides making it clear that him that putting hands on a woman like that was NOT acceptable, he also specifically made him aware at the might the Spauldings could bring down on his head. After Brent, Alan-Michael isn’t taking any chances.”

“None of us do,” Frank said pulling Lucy in for a big brotherly hug. He silently gave a prayer of Thanksgiving that it had turned out as well as it had. “I’m glad he’s watching out for both of you.”

“He’s watching over us all right, but it’s driving Molly nuts. When I was her age I was conning people out of jobs and almost ready to decide who I was going to marry. He’s got to give her some space before she does something crazy to assert her independence, and if there’s one thing Alan-Michael and I know about acting out and doing extreme things to get our way….I hope Molly can avoid learning about it.”

Lucy bit her lip and looked out the door in the direction that Alan-Michael and Molly had gone.

Scene 15

Bridget hurried through the Bauer living room towards the front door. Lillian and Buzz were sitting on the couch talking. “Is she here yet? Kat just texted she was almost here.”

Bridget through open the door and there stood Kat looking stark and formal. Bridget paused, and then both women broke into laughter as they hugged each other. Bridget wrapped her arm around Kat’s shoulders. “You’re looking great, Kat. It’s been way too long. What’s it been since we saw each other? Oh, at least a year since you came to visit us in Oakdale.”

“It’s been even longer since I’ve been back to Springfield.” Kat looked back at the open door. “Paul, Hamp, get in here.” Kat shared an exasperated look with her best friend. “You keep thinking it will get easier as they get older — it doesn’t.”

“Tell me about it. Peter’s out of college now and I still worry about him….and he still doesn’t pick up after himself.”

Both women were laughing together when Paul and Hamp walked in, Hamp pulling the door shut behind them.

Hamp looked rebellious. “I still don’t see why we had to come here to celebrate the fourth. The guys and I had pitched in on some fireworks and now I’m going to miss them setting them off.”

Kat walked over to Hamp. “Because the Bauer BBQ is the best time to visit Springfield. It’s the one time when the whole town is together and I want you to meet some of your Grandpa Hamp’s friends. You never got to meet him and I want them to help you get an idea of what he was like. I want you to see his club. Plus this is where I finished growing up. You’ll just have to put up with it. Besides here’s Bridget. You like Bridget don’t you?”

“Ya, Bridget is fun.”

“Thanks…I think.”

“Plus your Uncle Billy is here. He was Grandpa Hamp’s best friends. He can tell you about when they played football together.”

Paul broke in with a smile. “Billy’s here? Where?”

Bridget answered, “Right before you got here he was out watching them set up the grill. I’ll walk you back there….Oh before we do that I want you to meet Lillian and Buzz. Kat, you remember them.”

“Of course…. Boys, Buzz here makes the best non-Bauer burger in town. When I was your age, I used to hang out at his restaurant, the Fifth Street diner, all the time. And this is Lillian she’s the best nurse anywhere.”

Buzz shrugged one shoulder, “Not the greatest….”

Lillian interrupted. “That’s nice of you to say, Sweetie.”

“These are my boys Paul and Hamp.”

Lillian added, “Oh, I see their resemblance to Hamp. Now I think Bridget told me that you were married to Paul Frasier’s son. Ed Bauer has told all about your grandfather. He was one of Ed’s mentors and a great surgeon before he got promoted to administration, but you want to talk about Hamp. Have fun today.”

Bauer BBQ 2017 by Robansuefarm Part 1

July 5, 2017

Author’s Note: This year’s Bauer BBQ fanfic is much more like a real set of Bauer BBQ episodes. I really love how it’s turning out and I hope you enjoy it. I haven’t broken it into actual episodes, but there are obvious places for commercial breaks that I put in.

I outlined it first and mostly stuck to that numbering so I could keep track of the different storylines.  I’ve kept my original scene numbers from my outline just to keep things easier for me, but you’ll see notes I’ve included when they’ve had to change. When I realized I needed to add a scene I added an A or a B. It really should be broken up into multiple episodes and I probably would have done that if I had gotten it done early enough, but I ran out of time. If I repost it next year, I may get that part fixed when I polish it.

So the lesson is start working on your Bauer BBQ 2018 RIGHT NOW!

Bauer BBQ 2017 by Robansuefarm Part 1

Scene 1A

It was early morning at the Bauer House. Rick Bauer stood at the flag pole in the side yard of the family home. *

He looked around at the young Bauers standing around him. He looked at his children, Jude and Leah. He had always wanted children and even if he hadn’t been able to play as active a role as he would had hoped in their lives during their younger years, he couldn’t be prouder of his children. He was only sorry he never had more. There could never be too many Bauers.

Standing next to his kids were his nephew and nieces, Robbie, Hope, and Danielle. He was still grateful that Michelle and Danny had moved back from California when they had. His little sister was raising some great kids.

“OK troops! Let’s raise the flag.”

Robbie snaps the flag open with a practiced hand. He has been doing it for years. Even before they moved to California he remembered doing this with his Grandpa Ed. It is one of Robbie’s favorite parts of the BBQ. Being careful not to let the flag touch the ground, he clipped it in place and briskly ran it up the flag pole.

Rick spoke. “Every year we start the BBQ by raising the flag. The tradition goes back to picnics Papa and Mama Bauer used to have on the Fourth. They started every one by raising the flag. Papa Bauer is who I am named for. Robbie also is partially named for him. He was your Great-Great-Grandfather and I want you to remember his gratitude for living in this country, for the new chance it gave him, and all the hard work he and Mama Bauer did giving the Bauers a strong start in this country. It’s up to you to remember and pass this knowledge along so that someday YOUR great-great-grandchildren will do this and remember how glad and how proud we are to be Americans.”

Rick says something like this to the children every year when they raise the flag. He wanted to engrave it on their memories so it would be passed on.

*NOTE: The flagpole only appeared during the BBQ when they showed this scene and seemed to be set up wherever was convenient. Since we don’t really know what was in the sideyard of the house that’s where I put it and will keep it as necessary.

Scene 1B

The group trouped over to the garage apartment. It was already bubbling with talk and laughter. Mindy was right in her element as she made breakfast with the rest of the kids that had spent the night. Friends of the Bauer kids and mostly family friends before them, spending the night before meant they had early dawn help available if they needed it and kept the kids busy if it wasn’t.

Rick paused near the door to think how beautiful and happy his wife was surrounded by children. He was sorry she never had a biological child who had lived, but she had determined to be the best step-mother and aunt in the world and, as always Rick thought with a smile, what Mindy determined to do got done.

Rick walked over and noisily kissed his wife. “How are things going in here?”

“Everybody’s doing great. I’m glad the garage apartment is empty this year. This is a lot easier than getting them breakfast in the same kitchen where we’re prepping the BBQ.”

Rick silently nodded in agreement. He loved Mindy. She was a good cook now, but she was still enough of a princess that she never washed a plate. He was glad this mess wasn’t in his prep area. Rick didn’t bother with breakfast, he just enjoyed the chaos.

Scene 2

Later Rick stood in the Bauer kitchen and surveyed his domain. The rest of the year this was a kitchen, but today it was the prep area where he launched an attack to feed an unlimited number of family, friends, coworkers, acquaintances, and even complete strangers who would show up at THE place to celebrate the Fourth in Springfield. There had been a time when he had felt so shoved to the side, almost like he, heck, the BAUERS hadn’t had a place on the canvas that was the community of Springfield. He had lost heart and so had the BBQ, but ever since 2010 after Michelle and Danny had moved back he had felt all the glory of the BBQ again and moved heaven and earth to make sure each year was the best year ever.

In a way prepping for the BBQ was like emergency triage, but this was a good kind without the pain, horror, and blood. Instead the constant attention, prioritizing, improvising was of everyone remembering the community and having a good time.

“Listen everyone! It’s time for the hat ceremony….Leah, if you’re ready.” Rick bent down and Leah picked up the Bauer BBQ chef’s hat. Ed had always worn it and Rick had taken it with great significance when Ed had passed it down to him, but since this had become his and Leah’s special moment it became even more important to him.

Everyone in the kitchen paused and clapped as Leah, put it on his head, aware of what this meant. “The Hat” was always an important part of the BBQ.

“Back to work!” Rick called as the moment passed. Once the hat was on his head he felt like a general martialing the troops. He picked up his clipboard “Reports!”

“Danny, condiments!”

“Rick, I used to run a restaurant I think I can handle….” Danny protested, but as usual it fell on deaf ears.

“I said condiments!”

Danny sighed, rolling his eyes at Michelle. “There is ketchup and mustard at two condiment stations around the backyard and plenty of back up for each. The relish and onions are ready to put out. Salt and pepper shakers and napkins on each table. Everything is ready to go.”

Rick tapped the end of his pen against his teeth. “I don’t know that this idea of yours using big pumps instead of lots of normal bottles is going to go.”

“Rick, it will be fine!” Michelle broke in.

Rick sighed and made a note to ask people about it later to find out how it had gone over.

“Michelle, desserts!”

“I made 2 dozen of Grandma Bert’s apple pies this year. They are cooling as we speak AND don’t you even think of hiding one. If you don’t get any I’ll make some again in the near future, as soon as you peel the apples for me. The watermelon is on ice and Danny has his stuff ready to carve it when ready.”

“How about the ice cream?”

“You’ll have to ask Lewis about that. He and Lizzie decided to turn hand churning ice cream into a contest this year.”

Rick frowned. This was the kind of thing he expected to be consulted on. “Blake, you may have to go on an ice cream run later.”

“Have car keys will travel. Although how I became the designated errand girl…”

“We appreciate you being ready to lend a hand when needed, Blake. Salads!”

“Rick, you can see I’m finishing up the cabbage and apple salad. Frank and Buzz have coleslaw on their list to bring and the potato salad is in the fridge.”

“Bert’s recipe?”

“Nope, you always ask me, so I got Bea’s recipe this year from Michelle. I thought it would make a nice change.” Rick’s face grew stormy until she added. “I remember it was always a struggle between Ed and Maureen. I thought I’d let Maureen win this year.”

Rick bit off his protest. Since it WAS for Maureen he let it go and checked it off his list.

“Bridget, Dylan, lettuce salad bar!”

“Rick, we make it all the way here for the BBQ this year and got here extra early so you can shout at us? I think we got it.”

Dylan cut in, figuring it was better to humor Rick. “We’re still chopping. All varieties of salad dressing requested are checked off the list. We’ve got the ice and the thermometer to check all the salads to keep them out of the danger zone.”

Rick grunted. He spared a glance. “Bridget, it’s a great think you got back with Dylan. Clearly he’s the one with sense in your family.”

Bridget picked up a pair of salad tongs to throw at Rick as he turned his back and walked away, but Dylan took them out of her hand. “Humor him.”

Just then Kevin kicked at the door. Bridget wiped her hands on a towel and went to let him in. Kevin and Jason each entered carrying two large, stuffed full reusable grocery bags a piece, closely followed by Frank and Buzz weighed down by coolers.

Buzz asked, “Are you going to give us a hand, Rick?”

“Nope, that’s what these two strapping young men are for,” he answered putting an arm around both Kevin and Jason. Rubbing his hands together, he added, “You’ve brought the ground sirloin. It’s time to make some magic…Rachel Ray and Emeril have nothing on me. Bauer Burgers here we come!” *

*NOTE: The Rachel Ray etc. line came from Michael O’Leary’s appearance on a talk show making Bauer Burgers. See my making Bauer Burgers post.

Scene 3

The boys were still eating when the girls finished and moved on to decorating. Sarah Randall and Emma Spaulding were Hope Santos’s best friends. The three of them had formed Les Tres Amigas Science Club* which had made Sarah’s Grandpa Billy laugh although he hadn’t explained why he thought the name was so funny. He wasn’t laughing at their interest in science and had helped throw open the doors to Lewis Oil walking them through the operation and answering every question they had even if he had to hunt up someone to tell them all the answer.

Today Hope, Sarah, and Emma were working with the smaller girls Dani, Frankie, and Peyton.** on decorating the Bauer House inside and out to within an inch of its life. The girls were talking and laughing happily together. Little Billy was there too, as usual joined at the hip with his best friend Dani.

Michelle trusted Hope to watch out for the other children, but after that treehouse stunt with Dani and Little Billy last March, Michelle felt better keeping them under a watchful eye so when the Coopers showed up she’d slipped out of the kitchen. The kids ran around up one ladder and down another putting up flags, banners, bunting, and sparkles wherever they could.

Michelle shook her head at a lopsided bundle on one of the portico corners. She moved one of the ladders over to climb up to fix it herself shaking her head that they could make such a din. She hadn’t gotten very far when a couple of arms came around her and pulled her off the ladder.

A sardonic, but gorgeous gaze met her own. “And what, may I ask, were you doing on a ladder?”

Michelle tried to brazen it out, pretending her husband wasn’t holding her in his arms. She smoothed out her top and picked a couple of imaginary pieces of lint off her culottes. “I was straightening that bundle of course. It would be done by now, if you hadn’t had to show off those big muscles of yours.” Michelle crossed her arms and scowled at him.

Danny laughed as he put her down. “None of that little missy. I’m on to your tricks. You were on that ladder when you KNOW we agreed you wouldn’t be. I’m not letting you pick a different fight to get off the hook. I think I see where your daughter got her illicit climbing inclinations.”

“Perfectly, right – from you!” Michelle said frostily, but with just a hint of a smile behind it as she gestured towards her old balcony with her head. Then she blushed and smiled. “OK you caught me. I said I wouldn’t get on any ladders today, but it would only take me a minute to fix that one crocked bunch….”

“Correction. It will just take ME a minute. Now tell me exactly what you want me to do.”

Michelle’s smile grew downright naughty, but now was not the time, so she had Danny straighten the clump until it was perfect.

*NOTE: Les Tres Amigos or LTA was an independent oil company started in the early 1980s. The original members were Josh Lewis (Billy’s brother), Amanda Spaulding, and Ross Marler. Eventually Billy came to town and pushed his way in. It eventually was folded into Lewis Oil. Clearly the children never heard of it and why should they have….until Grandpa Billy gets around to explaining the joke.

**NOTE: Dani Santos (Manny’s daughter), Frankie Cooper (Daughter of Frank Cooper and Natalia Aitoro), and Peyton Spaulding.

Scene 4

Meanwhile in Chicago, a helmeted figure, dress all in black leather, adjust the chin strap on his helmet with the smoke visor. He pulled on his leather gloves. He approached his black Indian motorcycle. He saddled up, revved the engine and turned the bike south, towards Springfield.

Bauer BBQ 2014 by Robansuefarm Chapter 4

July 8, 2016

AUTHOR’S NOTE:  In the last chapter, I hope you had a great time at Bauer BBQ 2014 and enjoyed seeing everyone. It took me WAY past the end of July to finish this fanfic which just tells you it’s time to get started on yours for next year NOW! Tell me what YOU think Bauer BBQ 2017 will be like and share. I also should mention I have a thing about people not doing the bridal march properly. If anything looks ungainly it’s just stomping down the aisle like you were walking anywhere else, so I spell out the proper steps.

Bauer BBQ 2014 by Robansuefarm Chapter 4

The crowd slowly shifted from the Bauer patio through the hedge to the Spaulding backyard. Rick led the way over the flat part of the lawn. It had rented white folding chairs set up in two groups with a white carpet runner up the middle between the two groups. The chairs were all faced in one direction facing the white wood trellis covered with red roses. A small string ensemble softly began playing background music. The guests gradually settled down and even the whispers trailed off as the music picked up in volume and intensity. A side door opened in the Spaulding Mansion and a group of men emerged. Most of them were wearing tuxedos. Ray lead the group wearing his clerical robes. Behind him came Frank Cooper, Phillip Spaulding, Rick Bauer, and Robbie Santos. They filed past slowly taking their places in a line in front of the arbor. Again the music hit a chord and the French doors opened again and this time Danny Santos came walking out to take his place beside his son and best man, Robbie. He just couldn’t quit smiling. He grinned back down at his son who was bursting with pride at his special role as best man. Danny resisted rumpling his hair because Robbie was trying so hard to act grown up. He looked up over Robbie’s head at his friends. Rick who he now considered his brother and he was happy to say the affection and connection was now returned. Beyond him was Phillip Spaulding. There had always been a sort of respect and connection between the two men and Phillip and Danny’s relationship had grown over the years. After they had returned to town and Danny accepted the job at Spaulding Enterprises they had grown quite close. He and Michelle had been included in the Four Musketeers social sphere since their return and while he once never would have believed it, he felt part of that group. The last one of his groomsmen was Frank Cooper, who had long been one of his best friends, Danny did turn away and suddenly grimaced at the thought of how lost he’d gotten during Michelle’s amnesia. How could he have betrayed his good friend like that? Reaching out to Frank’s daughter in his desperate search for normalcy, he wouldn’t have blamed Frank if he’d never forgiven him and he thanked God that he had.

Danny was distracted by the flash of color when Michelle’s cousin Bridget moved from her position at the table with the reception book to her seat beside her husband, Dylan Lewis. Danny’s eyes locked on the far side of white carpet runner. He heard his daughter giggling behind the hedge. The string quartet struck up playing “Too Busy Being in Love” and Chelsea Reardon, Michelle’s aunt, began to sing.

As the words to the song ended and began again the second time through as an instrumental, Hope appeared and took her time centering herself on the white carpet. She paused and giggled again, Danny wasn’t sure if it was because she was so happy or because his little drama queen wanted to make sure that all attention on her before she started down the aisle. She took a breath, grinned, and started down the aisle taking loooong steps in the proper bridal march; right step, together, left step, together, right step….. As she went she sprinkled pink rose petals along the aisle in her fluffy, light pink dress. She arrived at the end of the aisle and stepped over to the far side next to the groomsmen.

Next down the aisle, dressed in a matching dress only in a dusky rose, came Beth. Step right, together, left step, together, right step… Beth also carried a short, dark haired beauty, the latest pride of their love, Danielle. Danielle was the other flower girl, but had proven very definitely at the rehearsal that she couldn’t be trusted walking down the aisle either alone or with her big sister. Beth was about halfway down the aisle when the next lady in pink appeared around the hedge, it was Drew, Michelle’s maid of honor from their church wedding at Casa Santos. They hadn’t really been close before that, but they had grown close over the next few years and had kept in touch even after she moved to New York and they had moved to California. Drew was beaming and had a calm, contentment she had never shown before having finally made peace with her marriage, the lies and hurts of her childhood, and made her faith a strong tenant in her life. Beth had reached the altar and moved to her place at the far end. When Drew hit the middle point of the aisle, the final bridesmaid, Michelle’s step-sister Blake took her turn to walk down the aisle. When Blake hit the assigned point, Mindy, Michelle’s sister-in-law and matron of honor, started down the aisle in her matching dress. Mindy followed down the aisle and moved into her matron of honor position and put Dani down and held her hand. Dani showed that she could be just as much a center of attention as her big sister as she wore her matching light pink dress. She smiled at the audience did her best expression that she always used on her daddy when she wanted him to give her something and then she stuck her hand down and grabbed the hem of her skirt and yanked it up revealing her special lace lollies as the audience broke into general laughter. Accepting she’d had her due, Dani dropped her hand and fastened her eyes on where she remembered her mommy reappearing last night at the rehearsal.

The music changed and began the bridal march and just like that Michelle stepped onto the end of the white runner. The fluffy white dress focused on its sweetheart neckline and made a shawl collar and a flowing skirt that ended mid-calf. A narrow pink sash of pink encircled Michelle’s waist and tied behind. Around her neck was a gold chain, three charms hung from it, a locket with Maureen’s photo inside, a third grade spelling bee winning charm, and a charm shaped like the house they had finally built at Laurel Falls. Michelle’s hair had been twisted into an updo and was covered by a Mantea. It was the one from their Church wedding and while their feelings of that event were twisted by his family’s involvement, the service had still meant a lot to both of them. After all, it was that ceremony that kept that bound to each other through all eternity in the eyes of the Church. During the annulment separation, it had been the one piece of clothing of Michelle’s that Danny had kept. They felt it was an important tie to a part of their past.

It had been hard on Danny and Michelle both to spend the night before the wedding apart, they had always hated to spend a night apart, even before their fake marriage had turned real. It was worse than ever now when they were used to cuddling and ….. more…. every night in their California king size bed. Their eyes met across the garden and then Michelle’s face broke like the sun in their secret smile. Bill Lewis stepped up beside her and she came down the aisle on his arm.

Michelle and Danny were so focused on each other that everyone else faded into the background. Danny took Michelle by the hand and they kneeled beside each other facing Ray in his role as their priest. They vaguely heard Ray say, “Who gives this woman in marriage?” and Bill answer, “On behalf of her parents and myself, I do.” They both missed it, but Bill winked at them as he said the myself part.

Ray started. “We are here today to celebrate the renewed marriage of Daniel Santos and Berta Michelle Bauer Santos.” He bestowed on the crowd a welcoming smile. “Michelle and Danny have had a little trouble getting this right.” Another smile, met with a chuckle from the audience. “This is the seventh time they have come together before God and dedicated their lives, their hearts, and their sacred honor to each other. While they separated on several occasions, they have always honored their vows. During their original pre-cana, Danny and Michelle discovered just how closely their desires were for the same type of marriage, the same type of life and while they faced many challenges they have created that life for themselves and their children.”

As one Michelle and Danny turned to look at their children in turn, to Robbie who was standing beside his father as his best man, to Hope and then Dani who were serving as flower girls. Their children beamed back at them.

“Danny and Michelle have written their own vows.”

Michelle handed Mindy her bouquet. They stood and faced each other.

Danny cleared his throat. “Michelle, I know we took the scenic route to get where we are.” More laughter from the audience and he waited until it ebbed before he continued, “We both had a lot to learn to get this far. This is OUR life, OUR family, and we need to be willing to fight for it to be what we want. I mean you look innocent and beautiful and soft and pink, but underneath you’re like steel. I always knew you had that in you. It’s one of the reasons I fell in love with you. You never really gave up on me deep down and so you never really let me give up on myself, not quite all the way and we made it, baby. I look around now and I can’t believe what we’ve built together. I knew I was lying to you that day by the park bench when I told you I could never be happy in your life, but I had no idea just how wonderful it could be. Thank you, my beautiful wife for all eternity.”

Michelle replied, “Danny, a few years ago, I was talking to Marah and when I got home I wrote what I said down and kept it because it was so right. I’ve taken it out to read while times were difficult and I want to share it with you now.” Michelle unfolded and smoothed the faded and crinkled piece of paper. She looked up at Danny as her hand slightly shook. She smiled, “Remember I dropped my vows on our first wedding day. I’ll try to do better today…..Looking back I wouldn’t do a thing differently because you are worth it. It’s like we’re on some kind of a journey. Sometimes you lose direction, sometimes it’s me, but we’re supposed to be traveling together. I know that in my bones, sometimes it’s the only thing I do know, but I am sure, so wherever we end up together I know that’s where I want to be. Thank you, my handsome husband for all eternity.”

They stood and Michelle turned to the audience, letting go of one of Danny’s hands and turning him with her. “And I want to also thank all of you for being part of our special day. This is the third time we’ve recited vows on July 4th. Ray has been there for all three times.” She paused turning to smile back at him before continuing. “The first time we said our vows on this day we skipped the Bauer BBQ to do it, but the other two times we’ve been here and that’s better. The Bauer BBQ is very special for our family. The tradition of marking Independence Day as an important occasion dates back to my Great-Grandfather Papa Bauer. He and Mama Bauer were immigrants and truly appreciated the gift that was the United States. The party got a little bigger under my Grandma Bert whose apple pie recipe I always make for this day. Finally my parents, Ed and Maureen turned it into the celebration it is today. A celebration of family, friends, and the Springfield community. A place where everyone is welcome, old connections are refreshed, and where we celebrate the spirit of this country. A lot of you who knew me then questioned my choice when I wed Danny the first time, but you were wrong. It scared me so much I was afraid to admit, but the first time I looked into Danny’s eyes I saw my soul, his soul, as one and that’s what I still see. I also see so much love and that’s a love we share with all of you. I recently read a quote that made me think about Grandma Bert’s apple pies. Love is not a single pie (p-i-e), hand out your 8 slices and you’re done. Love is pi (p-i), irrational and never ending. Thank you for being here to day to help celebrate our irrational, never ending love.” Michelle turned back to Danny, re-clasped his hand and they shared their secret smile.

Danny whispered, “That’s perfect, you’re perfect.”

Ray cleared his throat bringing attention back to him and said, “The ceremony of marriage in which you come to be united is one of the first and oldest ceremonies in the entire world, celebrated in the beginning in the presence of God himself. Marriage is a gift in that we give ourselves totally to one another. I believe that marriage is a gift given to comfort the sorrows of life and to magnify life’s joys.”

“Marriage is the clasping of hands, the blending of two hearts, the union of two lives into one, and your marriage must stand, not by the authority of the State, nor by the seal on your wedding certificate, but by the strength and power of the faith and love you have in one another.”

“Repeat after me.”

Danny grinned, “I think we’ve got this.” He grinned at Michelle. She had handed her bouquet to Mindy and then clasped both of Danny’s hands.

Danny looked deeply into her eyes and vowed,”I, Danny, take you Michelle, to be my lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part.”

Ray added, “Danny, do you take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife? Forsaking all others, be faithful only to her so long as you both shall live?”

Danny had never looked happier when he said, “I do.”

Looking just as serious, Michelle vowed in turn. “I, Michelle, take you Danny, to be my lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part.”

Ray responded, “Michelle, do you take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband? Forsaking all others, be faithful only to him so long as you both shall live?”

Michelle replied, “I do.”

Ray continued, “Having this kind of love in your hearts for one another, you have chosen to exchange rings as the sign and seal of the promises you are making to one another today. Rings are very large in their significance. They are made of a precious metal and precious stone, and that reminds us that love is not cheap or common; but indeed love is very costly and dear to us. These rings are also made in a circle and their design tells us that we must keep love continuous throughout our whole lives even as the circle of the ring is continuous. As you wear these rings, whether you are together or apart for even just a moment, may these rings be a constant reminder of the promises you are making to one another this day.”

“Danny, will you please take this ring and place it upon the finger of Michelle’s left hand, and holding her hand in yours, please repeat this promise to her saying after me: With this ring, I seal my promise, to be your faithful and loving husband, as God is my witness.”

Danny repeated, “With this ring, I seal my promise, to be your faithful and loving husband, as God is my witness.”

Ray looked at Michelle, “Michelle, will you please take this ring and place it upon the finger of Danny’s left hand, and holding his hand in yours please repeat this promise to him saying after me: With this ring, I seal my promise, to be your faithful and loving wife, as God is my witness.”

Michelle repeated, “With this ring, I seal my promise, to be your faithful and loving wife, as God is my witness.”

“Michelle and Danny, you have come here today before us and before God and have expressed your desire to become husband and wife. You have shown your love and affection by joining hands, and have made promises of faith and devotion, each to the other, and have sealed these promises by the giving and the receiving of the rings. Therefore, it is my privilege as a minister and by the authority given to me by the State of Illinois, I now pronounce that you are husband and wife. Danny, you may kiss your the bride.”

“Ladies and gentlemen, it is my privilege to introduce to you once again Senor and Senora Santos.”

Michelle let out a little shriek as Danny suddenly swept her off her feet, with one arm under her knees and the other around her waist. He spun around to face the audience and as Michelle’s arms automatically came around Danny’s neck and he kissed her soundly.

Author’s Note: I said at the beginning that I was withholding my initial author’s note and now you can see why. Danny and Michelle were getting ready to renew their vows at the Bauer BBQ 2014. Danny spent the night at the Bauer House to honor the tradition of not seeing the bride before the wedding. Michelle I’m sure noted that got him out of working at the BBQ and Danny responded it meant he had to make sure everything for the wedding was ready. The special thing Robbie carried in first was his tuxedo. Michelle went in from the BBQ to get ready for the wedding. Michelle and Danny are FINALLY living in their Laurel Falls House because we’ve all agreed not to mention or think about Tattoo Tony ever, ever again so it isn’t strange for them. The kids are going to spend the night at the Bauer House to watch the fireworks with Rick and Mindy, so Danny and Michelle can head out to the Springfield Inn to make some fireworks of their own. And I think then they will finally go to Majorca, but they’ll take the kids.

I put in dialogue from several key Manny scenes and referenced several others. I hope you enjoy it.

That’s what I think happened at Bauer BBQ 2014. If you want to imagine what will happen during Bauer BBQ 2017. Start writing now.

Wedding Vows:

Words to “Too Busy Being In Love”, Note: I think these are listened to lyrics and I differ in a couple of points with them. I edited in a couple of places, but let a couple I weren’t sure were right.

Eve Guthrie and Ed Bauer’s Engagement Party

September 30, 2015
Michelle toasting Ed and Eve

Michelle toasting Ed and Eve

This episode aired –  October 24, 1994.

Several stories going on today and most of them aren’t part of the party umbrella. Matt is accused of some crimes and can’t tell where he was because he and Vanessa were having a secret affair.

Michelle gives a toast. Sadly those good feelings she’s talking about won’t arrive until 1999.

“So I want to make a toast to Ed and Eve, my dad and to all those good feelings our family is going to have.”

Someone spiked Ed’s drink. As a recovering alcoholic this was a terrible thing. Alan made an entrance to announce his return to Springfield. Dr. Bauer seems a bit formal for the brother of his ex-father-in-law whose been his neighbor for a good 20 years. This does bring up something I don’t get. They always kept all this alcohol around Ed where it would be easy to slip or make a mistake. While do they do that?

Commercial break after opening credits contains an ad for the Roger Thorpe videotape. This and Reva’s counterpart were the only authorized sales of Guiding Light footage until the Soap Classics releases. Watch it here:

Wow! I would have said if Ed had a problem with Alan it would have traced back to his destruction of Hope rather than that stupid affair that Alan had with Rita while she was involved with Ed – they weren’t all that into each other anyway. Even

For some reason soap hopping soap star Marcy Walker failed to click as Tangie (maybe it was the stupid name?). This was their latest hail Mary pass they are in the early stages of an Alan-Michael-Tangie-Alan triangle. It’s really too bad because Alan-Michael truly believed in Alan and was truly working towards a positive relationship and Alan pulls this.

Really for as smart as they normally play Matt, if he said he’d been to the movies, he should have picked one currently playing at a local movie theater. I think Matt is waiting for Vanessa to step up, but she doesn’t. Gentlemanly Matt doesn’t out her.

Time to get sick over Ed and Eve while he pretends she’s his only true love who has “changed me so completely. You’ve changed me and I can’t ever go back to what I was. I am a complete mess without you.”

The back of Blake’s dress reminds me of a peace sign without the circle. Oh, Eleni you haven’t been to very many parties at the Country Club if you think that this party breakup is anything but typical. No party ever goes well there.

12:00 in another great chance to see Ross-Ed as best friends rather than just hear that they are. “a couple of swallows” wouldn’t an alcoholic know after it hit his tongue? I am proud of Ed to want to go to an AA meeting. I think this might be his biggest hero moment ever. Really don’t understand Ed’s extreme reaction to Alan’s very existence. It wasn’t like this when Alan left.

I think Matt’s story is stupid. He was being stupid if he didn’t know that someone “influential in that town” was married. Plus, his father’s sister was had a brother-in-law (Mike Bauer) who is one of the top lawyers in the country. Wouldn’t asking for help make much sense? Plus, why not cop to being with a woman without naming who. Once that much came out he might as well. So Matt saved Marina’s life too? Maybe she was injured in some of these “life savings” that could be what’s wrong with her later.

“I haven’t had a chance to tell Eve about the drink yet.” – Yes, Ed you were only completely alone talking about what had just happening in a semi-private hallway.

This is so typical Blake. “You know I can’t believe that Eve treats him for a gun shot wound and in matter of days he manages to drag his sorry but out of bed and come over here and crash MY party.”

Ross: “Last thing I need is for you to turn into Paul Revere and go through the town of Springfield warning all the good folks.”

Actually I do agree Alan didn’t meant to “hurt” Blake he meant to stop Phillip from marrying her at all costs.

Fletch does have some good lines “while the caviar is hitting the fan.”

I’m really sorry Alan showed up at Ed’s party. It was truly typical Alan, but it hurt Ed and I don’t think A-M would have stood by like that. While A-M wanted to support his father, he wouldn’t have hurt his Uncle Ed like that.

Favorite Individual Episodes 5

August 17, 2014

These days most people are watching Guiding Light via clips instead of individual episodes. Learn more about clips here:

In some ways this is unfortunate because they were written, timed and paced with the idea that you would watch the whole episode. By only watching clips of a single story line you lose the interconnection of stories, the cuts between them, and the pacing. Some wonderful people load entire episodes on YouTube. I want to point out and link to a few of those that are just exceptionally well done episodes in and of themselves that taken as whole even out of context with surrounding episodes they are just a perfect mix and a true jewel to behold.

Roger Thorpe After Shooting

Roger Thorpe After Shooting

I’ll be posting these, not in any particular order but as I come across episodes that I think deserved to be singled out that I find online.

This particular episode Roger Thorpe’s triumphant return to the land of the living after he was shot isn’t quite as much of an out and out pleasure as some of these I’ve shared. The beauty is in the passing, structure, and general direction of the episode. It’s very much an artifact of it’s time in the storyline and doesn’t really work as well all by itself, but it’s so well done I wanted to share it anyway. It’s a great example of an umbrella episode where every bit plays back to the suspense or the ultimate fall out of the central theme.

This episode was from January 26, 1994. 1994 was a great Guiding Light year for drama. Roger had been shot by an unknown assailant after having all his enemies who had a good reason to shoot him (and they are legion and all with good solid reasons) on December 3, 1993. A severely injured Roger  had found his way to Holly who had reluctantly agreed to hide him and they became true partners for the first time. Among the chief suspects were Jenna who is acting so strange with Buzz after having finally broken free of Roger, Bridget who discovered Roger was coming after her kid Peter (he was the biological grandfather on the father’s – Hart – side), Alex who had a long standing feud with Roger since their marriage broke up, Nick who resented how Roger had treated Mindy,  and Gilly who Roger had been royally shafted by Roger and fired from WSPR. They do an excellent job of making everyone seem suspect, not just in the build up, but in this particular episode. You can really believe it’s almost anybody as they each have a case made against them in turn by their actions.

They made good use of the two months between when Roger was shot and today’s episode rebuilding and recasting the Roger-Holly relationship into a powerful partnership of equals who forgave each other. Roger got worse as infection set in so Holly turned to Eve that ultimately led to her turning him in, giving Holly another reason to hate Eve (like anyone needed one). They did a great job of making Roger look progressively sicker and this is a fantastic physical reflection of what had been happening to him on screen for the past few weeks in this episode.

However, the actual shooter was Billy Lewis. Billy found out that Roger was Peter’s grandfather and shot him to try to protect Billy’s adopted son Peter. It doesn’t really track, but sadly Jordan Clarke was having major problems in his personal life, requiring them to recast Billy. While the forced Billy recast worked out better than the ones earlier for Alan and later for Roger, it was still pretty bad and they reworked the story to move him off canvas.

They then move into some powerful Jezz stuff as they deal with their demons.

It’s an episode with the long version of the end credits, written by Courtney Simon & directed by Irene Pace. When we watched it only #GLParty @ItsOnlySoaps pointed out the credits listed “33 cast members on contract and 14 off contract listed…(back when soaps had $).”

Jeva Wedding Number 1 Cross Creek

July 21, 2014

Jeva WeddingI have to say to begin with I’m not a Jeva fan, but even so, I still consider Josh Lewis and Reva Shayne marrying for the first time at Cross Creek (aka Jeva Wedding Number 1) as the greatest soap wedding ever. It had everything a soap wedding should: ties to the community, beautiful location shots, beautiful clothes (that dress, that hat, Josh’s white suit), lots of family members, family traditions (which were carried on at future Lewis family weddings, not made up for this one and then forgotten), drama simmering beneath the scenes (will Rusty be able to get Will Jefferies, will Mindy and Rusty FINALLY get together, will Jeva find the perfect place for their wedding, will Reva make it to the wedding even after she was left behind, what is Reva’s big secret she hasn’t told Josh yet and what does that have to do with yon handsome stranger Dylan). In addition it just has normal wedding stuff all too often missing from soap weddings, Billy getting people to tape a videotape a wedding message to Josh and Reva, odd people dancing together, Marah running around giggling and dancing. It’s just the perfect soap wedding and makes you feel wonderful. (Except what is the deal with that strange looking guy being the minister?) I’m sure you’ll enjoy this, so welcome to Cross Creek and the biggest blowout it’s ever seen, the Jeva wedding, July 14-18, 1989. See summaries of other storylines below the clip links.

You may want to watch Bauer BBQ 1989 to help catch you up on the various supporting storylines.

P.S. If you want to know, weddings 2 and 3 on my all time best wedding list are Quola, also on Guiding Light, and Niktor number 1 on The Young and the Restless.

In addition to the footage of the wedding itself I’ve included links to some other materials (promo, restored clips, etc.) and linked to all the footage on the clip channel I got this from so it actually starts a few days before the wedding with prep. The entire first lead up to the wedding episode is available as part of the Bauer BBQ 1989 which was right before the wedding.

Roger revealed himself at Blake and Phillip’s wedding, saving Blake’s life. Since he was alive, he had to face all the legal charges that he was facing when he fell off the clip. Ross had been Roger’s lawyer when he first came to town and is defending him alive now. Roger was working as a CIA operative during the years everyone thought he was dead and that gets him off now. Since some of those charges involved kidnapping Holly she isn’t pleased to see him go free. Holly is wrong about Roger not trying right here though, he honestly is trying to make up for past wrongs. However, she’s right to some extent that Roger hasn’t changed. Roger spent his life being torn between wanting Spaulding Enterprises, money and power or Holly and relationship happiness. He really could never have both or decide which he wanted which led his actions to veer greatly between them and created lots of chaos in his wake. Phillip is very supportive of Roger right now because Roger saved Blake’s life and Phillip loves Blake. Alan is actually telling the truth (he’d faked proof of Beth’s death to help Phillip move on believing Beth was really dead), but he’s only telling it now as a last ditch effort to keep Phillip and Blake apart. Beth will soon be back, but only after they swap out Blakes.

In a storyline no one I’ve found liked, Rusty inexplicably dumped Mindy who was his soulmate for a mealy mouth, annoying, ex-prostitute named Rose. Rusty married Rose and she was recently murdered. Rusty suspects it was done by Will Jefferies who was then married to Mindy and he was right.

I don’t know who this Dana is and the couple who apparently want her to lose the child. Rick is especially vulnerable and protective of pregnant women right now because he’s just suffered through his first miscarriage with Meredith.

Johnny Bauer and Chelsea Reardon are currently a couple and working together on their new talk show One on One at WSPR. The people they are talking about using is the poor family they found in the 4th of July episode linked to above. Chelsea has an issue with Holly both professionally and because Holly is having an affair with Ed while Ed is married to Chelsea’s sister Maureen.

Bauer BBQ 1991

Overhead shot of Bauer Backyard 1991

Overhead shot of Bauer Backyard 1991

These are each a full episode. We also get some nice Michelle stuff in this. Strangely once again it’s just Michelle and Ben at the Bauer BBQ and Little Billy isn’t in sight. We learn that Michelle went through a horse phase as many young girls do (and it makes that Laurel Falls dream wedding story that included a white horse seem more possible). Ultimately Bridget’s actions to try to win Hart end up having long term consequences and the sudden death of Maureen ends up maturing Bridget quickly into someone, who might still be a little wild, but is someone we know and love. This isn’t that Bridget. This Bridget is Maureen’s niece who was dropped on Maureen and Ed because her own parents couldn’t control her, she is still a wildcat that needs taming. She influences Kat and to some extent Michelle for the worse. That frizzy crimping in hair wasn’t rebellion though, it was right in style in 1991. Eleni and Dylan Lewis are in the middle of their short period of dating and Bridget is trying to get Dylan to notice her. She will shortly move on to Hart, but ultimately returns to Bridget who was always her best friend and finally gets the crack over the head with a slate he needed to figure out he wanted more. Hart is also in Blake’s sights for a very different reason. Blake “Apple of Her Daddy’s Eye” Chrissy Thorpe does not take kindly to no longer being her father’s only child and that the new child is male and apparently faultless doesn’t help. Alex is about to blow Roger out of the water with her knowledge that Roger and Mindy had a long term affair (Roger seemed to actually care about Alex in the beginning, but being with her and her refusal to grant him real power led him to feel emasculated and Mindy – who knows why – offered herself up as a hero worshiping young thing just when his ego needed it most.) Alex will get her first pound of flesh that very night.

Day 1

Vanessa is 100% right, she and Billy do always belong together. This year they are making Bert Bauer’s potato salad. Maureen tells Bridget: “You have to put in sauteed shallots and fresh dill and then you fold it over very slowly from the bottom.” So we won’t get to see Rick this year. 😦 That’s sad to just get a phone call, but this must be when he was exiled to Chicago (Michael O’Leary having chosen to leave the show) and basically going into a long term sulk that will include a renewal of his drug addiction and his marriage to Annie Dutton. Alexandra has finally found about Roger’s duplicitous actions with both Mindy and her company and will really nail Roger at this dinner. I really think this Blake and this Hart had the best sibling relationship. Blake has always been the apple of her father’s eye, so finding out he had a male heir who hadn’t made as many mistakes as she had was a big shock to her. She reacted some better than Vanessa in similar circumstances, but it was still hard on her and she is still at the point of taking it out on Hart that he exists. Blake is right. Hart doesn’t know much about women in general or Alex. Kat and Bridget were good friends, but Kat really hated Gilly at this point. Dylan and Bridget was a great circular story. She started up wanting Dylan and in the end Dylan realized what he wanted was her, sadly Hart proved a long diversion in the middle. This is a nice bit about young horse crazy (maybe Hart crushing) Michelle. A nice friendship scene between Maureen and Vanessa, too. Eleni briefly dated Dylan, but it really didn’t stick with either one. Little Billy isn’t there, once again it’s just Michelle and Ben. Michelle got an A on a history paper about the Declaration of Independence. Mallet was beat up and Frank being his best friend wants to get the guys who did it. Holly is dating Dr. Daniel St. John who will ultimately be proven to be a crook. (Day1)

Day 2 – Fourth of July Night

Two fireworks shows are prepping as the Fourth of July continues. Some of the town gathers in the park with Dylan and Eleni to watch the real thing and others hang out to watch in the Bauer yard. Others are gathered at Alex’s request as the Lakeland Country Club. I normally love pink walls, but thank God they repainted them. This looks terrible. I think Roger did love Alex as much as he could love a woman who wasn’t Holly. I think this is as curly and fluffy as Alex’s hair ever was. Alex: “It was only immoral, not illegal or so I was convinced.” Then “No charges were filed, Roger how many times has that phrase been linked to your name.” On the other hand I think the country club patio looks the best it has. Sherry Stringfield’s version of Blake liked to swim in the Lakeland Country Club Pool….sometimes naked. At this point Blake and Frank would have made a lot more sense than they did at the end. A.C. Mallet, who was Frank’s best friend and partner at the time (trying to fill the Phillip-Rick relationship hole in the canvas) is in the hospital having taken a terrible beating. One of Dylan’s problems was that he was Dyslexic and had trouble reading. The name Eleni is struggling over is John Phillip Sousa THE most famous musician of the 19th century who singularly invented patriotic marching band music. Eleni was an illegal immigrant from Greece who came over to be Frank’s arranged bride, he objected over the concept, although he later fell for the girl. So Eleni dated Dylan and later Alan-Michael. The actress was actually Greek-American and she heard from many compatriots who insisted she keep things accurate including her accent which was not her real one. Very nice real fireworks film. Alex nailed Roger in front of everybody. Frank and Blake continued to bond. Mindy is wearing a truly beautiful formal pantsuit. Bridget launches her campaign to get Dylan away from Eleni, but things don’t go her way. Nice Lillian in charge scene, but I don’t remember why Mallet is beat up or why Roger is on crutches. Mallet’s PI office was in the same building as Mindy’s fashion design loft. Almost by accident they became good friends and he helped her cover up her affair with Roger. Holly’s hair is really pretty. Daniel St. John: “I am fed up. I’ve had it….You knew it had to do with Roger right….You hoped it would be everything it turned out to be and you’re not even happy with that…..I thought that you hated him that this man had fouled your life up and you wanted him out of it.” No, St. John you shouldn’t have intervened. As twisted as it is, Holly is only really Holly when she’s with Roger and it isn’t like St. John turns out any better in the end with less excuse. Roger always wanted all those “props” and honestly I don’t think Alex did. Alex was willing to walk away from everything to elope and really the only time she really wanted that billy club was when she was extracting what she saw as justified revenge (others might differ) or when she’d gotten herself in a jam. Otherwise I don’t think she cared about the wealth. I think Roger really did like Alan-Michael, just not enough to change his plans for his sake. He would later tell Blake what a great husband Alan-Michael was to her and that he didn’t know if she’d ever find another as good. Maureen and Roger’s friendship was a touchstone on the show and it was a constant source of tension between Ed and Maureen since Ed utterly hated him.  Bridget: “Don’t look a gift girl in the mouth.” Dylan actually accurately predicted the next few years of Bridget’s life with his advice and warning, but the undercurrent of desire and attraction between them was there ,too. The last two minutes are the worst for Roger and really that’s what Maureen should have been upset about, Roger kind of deserved the rest, but you could call the guy on crutches a taxi when you were in the middle of nowhere. (Day 2)

Bauer BBQ 1990

Bauer BBQ 1990

Bauer BBQ 1990

I think there was probably a prep day before this, but this is what I have. The numbers don’t add up to an entire day’s worth and surely there was a scene where Rick and Mindy convince Beth to come to the BBQ before they just show up. I’ll keep looking.

From what we have. It’s the day of the Bauer BBQ and things are in a better place for pretty much everybody this year. Most notably Beth Raines who we thought dead last year, who was really living as a mute amnesiac who’d snapped over thinking she’d killed her stepfather Bradley when she was attacked (she didn’t) has been brought back from the dead and reunited with Phillip. Chelsea is about the only one in a darker place than last year having gone through a terrible stalker storyline where she was almost killed more than once. We get some really nice stuff showing that Ed and Ross are best friends and that Ross and Holly really did once have a good romance, as much as they like to ignore that fact later. My favorite part though is that Rick came in and scooped up Michelle to watch the fireworks in his lap. They really always did have such a strong relationship, you see why the Santos stuff upset him and why Michelle eventually forgave him despite the awful things he did. I am also glad that both Phillip and Beth relented and attended the BBQ since they’d both missed the year before and they will be off the canvas before Bauer BBQ 1991.

Holly and Ross (Hoss) have a nice romantic talk referencing Ed and Maureen reunion, but Ed and Mo are having a fight today. Isn’t that the same dress Holly wore last year? It’s very close if it isn’t. Phillip has discovered Beth is alive and they have reunited, but Beth doesn’t want to go. Then Rick and Mindy show up reuniting the Four Musketeers and insist they all go to the party. (Part 1)

Chelsea has cut off all her beautiful hair. She has gone through a murderous stalker storyline. Maureen and Holly are much closer and seem friendly

this year. Ed specifically asks for regular ketchup, not the gourmet stuff. Holly announces she’s moved in with Ross. Really glad Ross and Ed get a great friendship bit. They are having regular potato salad made from Bea Reardon’s recipe. (Part 2)

I think Ed has a point, it’s sometimes hard to tell clean dishes from dirty dishes in a dishwasher. Maureen says Ed starts planning for the Bauer BBQ in early June including looking for new recipes to serve, which Maureen usually ignores. Michelle and Ben run through near end of clip. (Part 3)

The bad recast of Justin is there talking with a much more mature than the previous year Samantha. Rick and Mindy drug Phillip and Beth to the Bauer BBQ. Samantha and Dylan were an item and apparently Justin (who was a real cad himself at that age) has made a deal with Dylan to keep them apart. (Part 4)\

Everyone sings “This Land is Your Land.” Holly accepts Ross’ proposal. Michelle watches the fireworks on Rick’s lap. (Part 5)
