Bauer BBQ 2017 by Robansuefarm Part 3

Scene 12

Back in the kitchen, a commotion sounded at the door. Rusty Shayne and Wanda Hite arrived bearing the necessities for Oklahoma BBQ. Rusty had made the trip up from his ranch near Tulsa. He barely got his load down on the kitchen table before Mindy threw her arms around his neck.

“Melinda Sue,” he said happily. “Are you doing as well as you look?”

“As fine as an Oklahoma sunrise. How are you doing?”

“Oklahoma is still less fun without you, but the ranch is doing fine.”

Rick came in a pulled a grimace. Most of Mindy’s ex-es he didn’t much mind. In fact his best friend Phillip was one of them, but Rusty was the one whose relationship went back with Mindy longer than Rick’s. They had grown up together as kids. It was her one relationship that he felt might be as strong as theirs. Rusty and Mindy had grown up together as kids. Rick was happier when he stayed down in Oklahoma where he belonged.

Rick swallowed and walked over with his hand extended. “Rusty,” he said. “Thanks for bringing the Oklahoma BBQ. I know it makes Mindy happy and people have come to expect it now.”

“Don’t mind me and Earl. We make no never mind.”

Mindy jumped in. “Wanda, now you know we see you and Earl a lot more often than we do Rusty.”

Wanda helped balance her load on the back of a chair as she paused. “Where do you want us to set up?”

Billy came in. “Rusty, what are you doing by letting Wanda stand there with a heavy load. I’ll take that.”

During this exchange and the ribbing, a woman with long, black hair pulled into a tight bun. She was dressed too formally for the party in a black suit. She quietly worked her way behind the happy group and edged into a dark corner of the patio.

Scene 12B

The Indian motorcycle continue to drive south. He passed a green highway sign saying, “Springfield 172 miles.” He gunned it around a black suburban and hurried on.

Scene 13

Beth and Phillip had the art auction entries each set up on their own easel along the edge of the patio. Each had a number that matched a description in the glossy printed guide.

Clarissa Marler and Maureen Reardon had the children’s art station all set up. They grabbed kids who arrived early and set them to work on the mural.

Mindy had come out to make sure her fashion drawing she’d donated for the auction looked right, but she had been caught by the sight of the kids playing. It yanked at her heart reminding her of the baby she’d lost and the children she and Rick never had.

Rick had caught Mindy’s expression across the patio and came up behind her. “It looks like they could use some help. Why don’t you dig in there?”

“You think so?”

“I know so. No one spreads sunshine like you do.”

Looking cheered up, Mindy dived into the kids. She started helping a girl make a dog she was painting look a little less like park bench.

The woman with the tight bun had reached the artwork going straight to the painting from the Spaulding attic. She looked the painting over very carefully. She moved back into the shadows and pulled out her cell phone. She pressed a saved number. “It’s definitely THE painting…..No, not yet. I will try to get it before the auction starts. She abruptly ended the call.

Scene 14

Molly Spaulding came rushing into the Bauer kitchen nearly running into Blake and then Buzz in the process. Her dad, Alan-Michael Spaulding, was hot on her heels. “God Dad, stop hovering. I go to college for heaven’s sake. I don’t need you looking over my shoulder all the time.”

“Princess, will you wait up. I wasn’t hovering I was….”

Both continued through the kitchen and out the back door to the patio.

Lucy came in a troubled expression on her face. Frank intercepted her with a hug. “What’s going on, Sis?”

Waving towards the door, “You heard. Molly thinks Alan-Michael has been overly protective and it’s smothering. You know he always was protective, but lately…”

“Did something happen?”

“Well, he went to visit Hope earlier this month…I’m afraid she’s not doing well. Alan-Michael can’t do anything to help her so he’s determined to keep up safe. He knows I can take care of myself, but he’s even been a bit hover-y with me and he’s way overboard with Molly. Then there was her boyfriend.”

“What about him?”

“Tom got a little aggressive with her, enough so she filed a police report.”

“Oh, what did you say his last name is? Does he go to Springfield U with Molly?”

“Yes, he goes to Springfield U, but don’t worry about putting the fear of God into him. Besides making it clear that him that putting hands on a woman like that was NOT acceptable, he also specifically made him aware at the might the Spauldings could bring down on his head. After Brent, Alan-Michael isn’t taking any chances.”

“None of us do,” Frank said pulling Lucy in for a big brotherly hug. He silently gave a prayer of Thanksgiving that it had turned out as well as it had. “I’m glad he’s watching out for both of you.”

“He’s watching over us all right, but it’s driving Molly nuts. When I was her age I was conning people out of jobs and almost ready to decide who I was going to marry. He’s got to give her some space before she does something crazy to assert her independence, and if there’s one thing Alan-Michael and I know about acting out and doing extreme things to get our way….I hope Molly can avoid learning about it.”

Lucy bit her lip and looked out the door in the direction that Alan-Michael and Molly had gone.

Scene 15

Bridget hurried through the Bauer living room towards the front door. Lillian and Buzz were sitting on the couch talking. “Is she here yet? Kat just texted she was almost here.”

Bridget through open the door and there stood Kat looking stark and formal. Bridget paused, and then both women broke into laughter as they hugged each other. Bridget wrapped her arm around Kat’s shoulders. “You’re looking great, Kat. It’s been way too long. What’s it been since we saw each other? Oh, at least a year since you came to visit us in Oakdale.”

“It’s been even longer since I’ve been back to Springfield.” Kat looked back at the open door. “Paul, Hamp, get in here.” Kat shared an exasperated look with her best friend. “You keep thinking it will get easier as they get older — it doesn’t.”

“Tell me about it. Peter’s out of college now and I still worry about him….and he still doesn’t pick up after himself.”

Both women were laughing together when Paul and Hamp walked in, Hamp pulling the door shut behind them.

Hamp looked rebellious. “I still don’t see why we had to come here to celebrate the fourth. The guys and I had pitched in on some fireworks and now I’m going to miss them setting them off.”

Kat walked over to Hamp. “Because the Bauer BBQ is the best time to visit Springfield. It’s the one time when the whole town is together and I want you to meet some of your Grandpa Hamp’s friends. You never got to meet him and I want them to help you get an idea of what he was like. I want you to see his club. Plus this is where I finished growing up. You’ll just have to put up with it. Besides here’s Bridget. You like Bridget don’t you?”

“Ya, Bridget is fun.”

“Thanks…I think.”

“Plus your Uncle Billy is here. He was Grandpa Hamp’s best friends. He can tell you about when they played football together.”

Paul broke in with a smile. “Billy’s here? Where?”

Bridget answered, “Right before you got here he was out watching them set up the grill. I’ll walk you back there….Oh before we do that I want you to meet Lillian and Buzz. Kat, you remember them.”

“Of course…. Boys, Buzz here makes the best non-Bauer burger in town. When I was your age, I used to hang out at his restaurant, the Fifth Street diner, all the time. And this is Lillian she’s the best nurse anywhere.”

Buzz shrugged one shoulder, “Not the greatest….”

Lillian interrupted. “That’s nice of you to say, Sweetie.”

“These are my boys Paul and Hamp.”

Lillian added, “Oh, I see their resemblance to Hamp. Now I think Bridget told me that you were married to Paul Frasier’s son. Ed Bauer has told all about your grandfather. He was one of Ed’s mentors and a great surgeon before he got promoted to administration, but you want to talk about Hamp. Have fun today.”

Bauer BBQ 2014 by Robansuefarm Chapter 3

July 7, 2016

Author’s Note:  I would like to apologize. This is probably the part that most people are interested in where we see other people at the BBQ, but it’s just going to be a quick peek this year. Don’t assume if I don’t mention them your favorite isn’t attending, but I was running embarrassingly late on this so I moved along quickly to finish up my plot.  I’ll try to include more people in my next Bauer BBQ story.

Bauer BBQ 2014 by Robansuefarm Chapter 3

Michelle and Bill brought in the rest of the stuff with Hope opening the door and holding it for them. They deposited what they brought in on the kitchen table.

Hope followed them, “Uncle Bill, isn’t Sarah with you? She promised to be my partner in the three-legged race today.”

Robbie coming down stairs having deposited his package in his room, froze to listen, but no one else noticed.

Bill paused long enough to deposit Michelle’s stuff on the table and to swoop up Hope into his arms. “Sarah is with her daddy today, she’ll be along later, don’t worry, Squirt.”

“OK, Uncle Bill.” Completely reassured Hope danced off and Robbie came on down the stairs with a slight smile on his face.

Michelle put her load next to Bill’s as Rick came into the room. He was wearing a new apron this year that said “Bauer Power” IMG_0144and carrying the traditional chef’s hat as Leah hadn’t yet arrived to do the annual ceremonial crowning. “OK troops! I expect 100% devotion today. This is the 5th anniversary of the best little sister in the world moving back to town.” Rick paused to smack a noisy kiss on the top of Michelle’s head, “and we are going to celebrate.”

Rick paused to look around the kitchen as Blake came in the door and they all welcomed her, except for Rick who barked, “Blake, where is the potato salad? You did make it from Bert’s recipe didn’t you?”

“Still in the car. You can carry it in yourself after you assigned me to making it. And of course I used Bert’s recipe. What else?”

“No dissension in the ranks, we have to pull together people. A horde of people is going to be hitting that door today and we have to be ready!…Michelle, did you bring the ketchup?”

“I brought that all over last night, along with the rest of the condiments and I got the plain kind of ketchup Dad always liked.”

Phillip and Beth came in. Phillip carried a large Thermos jug and Beth pulling a cooler on wheels.

Rick made another check on his list. “Very good the lemonade and bottles of water. Bill just don’t stand there – start on the iced tea, you know where everything is.”

Frank came in pulling an oversized catering cooler. “Hot dogs and chicken breasts check! I’ll put the cooler by the grill and then go get the second cooler with the hamburger so you can start shaping the burgers.”

“Check, check, check!” Rick said. Really wishing Leah would get here so they could put on his hat. He always thought he looked more the commander of the BBQ once it was on, but he wouldn’t cheat. This was his and Leah’s special moment of the day and he won’t deprive them both of that.

“Coleslaw?” Rick asked Michelle.

“Ready and waiting in the refrigerator and so is the three-bean salad and the baked beans. The watermelon is on ice to cut later. I brought all that over last night and here are the relish trays I made last night.” She gestured to the pile Bill had carried in and abandoned on the kitchen table. “They just need the cling film pulled off and set out.”

“What about Bert’s apple pies?” he asked Michelle anxiously. “With everything else going on did you have time….”

“They are in the freezer. I’ll go pull them out now so they can thaw and we’ll rewarm them in the oven before we serve them.”

“Great!” Rick double checked his list for the fourth time. “When Buzz gets here with the last few things we should be ready to go.”

“Good,” Mindy said as she brought in a bag of ice and thunked it down on the counter. “Then you can help me bring in the last minute supplies and we can get this party going. AND next year I don’t care if it’s traditional or not, we’re having Oklahoma BBQ beside the Bauer Burgers and there are some buffalo brauts in the freezer you can just throw on the grill too.”

*****

It had become a tradition for Bill and Lizzie to oversee the games. Zach and Jude now settled back into Springfield life had helped for the last couple of years and with HB IV having so much energy Lizzie certainly appreciated the help. Dani, Little Billy, and Frankie were all about the same age and ran around, chasing each other in between the more formal games.  They set everything up, made sure the equipment was out from everything from the horseshoe toss to the badminton net. The traditional contests and races were the ones that people waited for though. The three legged race was a big hit with Phillip and James winning this year, although Mel and Leah weren’t far behind. Hope Santos and Sarah Randall came in first in the under 12 division. Meanwhile Henry and Peyton were tearing around trying to get into everything at once.

Next on the agenda was the egg toss. Someone who didn’t know what was going on would have been surprised to notice that the crowd was shrinking. The time was getting closer to zero hour and people were needed elsewhere. You could almost hear a clock ticking like Abby once did in a church before Ray’s first service. In spite of that the egg toss was a lot of fun with Billy and Vanessa Lewis taking the honors. Emma Spencer and Natalia Aitoro came in second. Maureen Reardon and Clarissa Marler broke up their championship team from last year in order that Clarissa could team with her boyfriend Adam and Maureen could team with Clarissa’s brother Kevin that Maureen hoped would soon be her boyfriend too, although it took some fast talking from Clarissa to get him to agree to it. Another tradition was kept when Lillian and Buzz showed up brushing off their clothes coming out of the woods right in the middle of the awarding of prizes.

*****

Michelle was distracted all day, thinking about what was to come, so she saw very little of this. She didn’t really pay attention to what anyone said to her. Only watching her kids to keep them safe, she found herself getting a little teary eyed. Having taken the last special package up to her old room earlier, she now went back in the Bauer House. She smiled as she ran her hand over the counter remembering their “celebration” there one night. Sent a scowl over to the chair in the corner where he had bled so much the night he was shot. Then she glanced back to the door and remembered Aunt Meta coming in to his welcome home party when Danny was released from the hospital following his recovery from the coma. She passed on to the short hallway that led up the backstairs and remembered running down them laughing with Danny when they came back from their second honeymoon, where unknown to them at the time they had conceived Robbie. She walked on up the stairs, ready now to open that special package. She placed it on her bed and unzipped it. She continued to stare at it when suddenly there was a knock on her door.

“Hey, look who’s here from New York!” Drew came into the room, “I’ve come to help you get ready.”

*****

The games began to close down early, everything was a little rushed this year because of what was going to happen before the fireworks started. Finally Rick appeared having ditched the hat and Bauer Power apron and invited everyone over next door to the Spaulding backyard.

Bauer BBQ 2014 by Robansuefarm Chapter 4

November 21, 2014

AUTHOR’S NOTE:  In the last chapter, I hope you had a great time at Bauer BBQ 2014 and enjoyed seeing everyone. The end of this is SO way over due it’s not even funny, but it’s never too early to start yours for next year. Tell me what YOU think Bauer BBQ 2015 will be like and share.

Bauer BBQ 2014 by Robansuefarm Chapter 4

The crowd slowly shifted from the Bauer patio through the hedge to the Spaulding backyard. Rick led the way over the flat part of the lawn. It had rented white folding chairs set up in two groups with a white carpet runner up the middle between the two groups. The chairs were all faced in one direction facing the white wood trellis with red roses. A small string ensemble softly began playing background music. The guests gradually settled down and even the whispers trailed off as the music picked up in volume and intensity. A side door opened in the Spaulding Mansion and a group of men emerged. Most of them were wearing tuxedos. Ray lead the group wearing his clerical robes. Behind him came Frank Cooper, Phillip Spaulding, Rick Bauer, and Robbie Santos. They filed past slowly taking their places in a line in front of the arbor. Again the music hit a chord and the French doors opened again and this time Danny Santos came walking out to take his place beside his son and best man, Robbie. He just couldn’t quit smiling. He grinned back down at his son who was bursting with pride at his special role as best man. Danny resisted rumpling his hair because Robbie was trying so hard to act grown up. He looked up over Robbie’s head at his friends. Rick who he now considered his brother and he was happy to say the affection and connection was now returned. Beyond him was Phillip Spaulding. There had always been a sort of respect and connection between the two men and Phillip and Danny’s relationship had grown over the years. After they had returned to town and Danny accepted the job at Spaulding Enterprises they had grown quite close. He and Michelle had been included in the Four Musketeers social sphere since their return and while he once never would have believed it, he felt part of that group. The last one of his groomsmen was Frank Cooper, who had long been one of his best friends, Danny did turn away and suddenly grimaced at the thought of how lost he’d gotten during Michelle’s amnesia. How could he have betrayed his good friend like that? Reaching out to Frank’s daughter in his desperate search for normalcy, he wouldn’t have blamed Frank if he’d never forgiven him and he thanked God that he had.

Danny was distracted by the flash of color when Michelle’s cousin Bridge moved from her position at the table with the reception book to her seat beside her husband, Dylan Lewis. Danny’s eyes locked on the far side of white carpet runner. He heard his daughter giggling behind the hedge. The string quartet struck up playing “Too Busy Being in Love” and Chelsea Reardon, Michelle’s aunt, began to sing.

As the words to the song ended and began again the second time through as an instrumental, Hope appeared and took her time centering herself on the white carpet. She paused and giggled again, Danny wasn’t sure if it was because she was so happy or because his little drama queen wanted to make sure that all attention on her before she started down the aisle. She took a breath, grinned, and started down the aisle taking loooong steps in the proper bridal march; right step, together, left step, together, right step….. As she went she sprinkled pink rose petals along the aisle in her fluffy, light pink dress. She arrived at the end of the aisle and stepped over to the far side next to the groomsmen.

Next down the aisle, dressed in a matching dress only in a dusky rose, came Beth. Step right, together, left step, together, right step… Beth also carried a short, dark haired beauty, the latest pride of their love, Danielle. Danielle was the other flower girl, but had proven very definitely at the rehearsal that she couldn’t be trusted walking down the aisle either alone or with her big sister. Beth was about halfway down the aisle when the next lady in pink appeared around the hedge, it was Drew, Michelle’s maid of honor from their church wedding at Casa Santos. They hadn’t really been close before that, but they had grown close over the next few years and had kept in touch even after she moved to New York and they had moved to California. Drew was beaming and had a calm, contentment she had never shown before having finally made peace with her marriage, the lies and hurts of her childhood, and made her faith a strong tenant in her life. Beth had reached the altar and moved to her place at the far end. When Drew hit the middle point of the aisle, the final bridesmaid, Michelle’s step-sister Blake took her turn to walk down the aisle. When Blake hit the assigned point, Mindy, Michelle’s sister-in-law and matron of honor, started down the aisle in her matching dress. Mindy followed down the aisle and moved into her matron of honor position and put Dani down and held her hand. Dani showed that she could be just as much a center of attention as her big sister as she wore her matching light pink dress. She smiled at the audience did her best expression that she always used on her daddy when she wanted him to give her something and then she stuck her hand down and grabbed the hem of her skirt and yanked it up revealing her special lace lollies as the audience broke into general laughter. Accepting she’d had her due, Dani dropped her hand and fastened her eyes on where she remembered her mommy reappearing last night at the rehearsal.

The music changed and began the bridal march and just like that Michelle stepped onto the end of the white runner. The fluffy white dress focused on its sweetheart neckline and made a shawl collar and a flowing skirt that ended mid-calf. A narrow pink sash of pink encircled Michelle’s waist and tied behind. Around her neck was a gold chain, three charms hung from it, a locket with Maureen’s photo inside, a third grade spelling bee winning charm, and a charm shaped like the house they had finally built at Laurel Falls. Michelle’s hair had been twisted into an updo and was covered by a Mantea. It was the one from their Church wedding and while their feelings of that event were twisted by his family’s involvement, the service had still meant a lot to both of them. After all, it was that ceremony that kept that bound to each other through all eternity in the eyes of the Church. During the annulment separation, it had been the one piece of clothing of Michelle’s that Danny had kept. They felt it was an important tie to a part of their past.

It had been hard on Danny and Michelle both to spend the night before the wedding apart, they had always hated to spend a night apart, even before their fake marriage had turned real. It was worse than ever now when they were used to cuddling and ….. more…. every night in their California king size bed. Their eyes met across the garden and then Michelle’s face broke like the sun in their secret smile. Bill Lewis stepped up beside her and she came down the aisle on his arm.

Michelle and Danny were so focused on each other that everyone else faded into the background. Danny took Michelle by the hand and they kneeled beside each other facing Ray in his role as their priest. They vaguely heard Ray say, “Who gives this woman in marriage?” and Bill answer, “On behalf of her parents and myself, I do.” They both missed it, but Bill winked at them as he said the myself part.

Ray started. “We are here today to celebrate the renewed marriage of Daniel Santos and Berta Michelle Bauer Santos.” He bestowed on the crowd a welcoming smile. “Michelle and Danny have had a little trouble getting this right.” Another smile, met with a chuckle from the audience. “This is the seventh time they have come together before God and dedicated their lives, their hearts, and their sacred honor to each other. While they separated on several occasions, they have always honored their vows. During their original pre-cana, Danny and Michelle discovered just how closely their desires were for the same type of marriage, the same type of life and while they faced many challenges they have created that life for themselves and their children.”

As one Michelle and Danny turned to look at their children in turn, to Robbie who was standing beside his father as his best man, to Hope and then Dani who were serving as flower girls. Their children beamed back at them.

“Danny and Michelle have written their own vows.”

Michelle handed Mindy her bouquet. They stood and faced each other.

Danny cleared his throat. “Michelle, I know we took the scenic route to get where we are.” More laughter from the audience and he waited until it ebbed before he continued, “We both had a lot to learn to get this far. This is OUR life, OUR family, and we need to be willing to fight for it to be what we want. I mean you look innocent and beautiful and soft and pink, but underneath you’re like steel. I always knew you had that in you. It’s one of the reasons I fell in love with you. You never really gave up on me deep down and so you never really let me give up on myself, not quite all the way and we made it, baby. I look around now and I can’t believe what we’ve built together. I knew I was lying to you that day by the park bench when I told you I could never be happy in your life, but I had no idea just how wonderful it could be. Thank you, my beautiful wife for all eternity.”

Michelle replied, “Danny, a few years ago, I was talking to Marah and when I got home I wrote what I said down and kept it because it was so right. I’ve taken it out to read while times were difficult and I want to share it with you now.” Michelle unfolded and smoothed the faded and crinkled piece of paper. She looked up at Danny as her hand slightly shook. She smiled, “Remember I dropped my vows on our first wedding day. I’ll try to do better today…..Looking back I wouldn’t do a thing differently because you are worth it. It’s like we’re on some kind of a journey. Sometimes you lose direction, sometimes it’s me, but we’re supposed to be traveling together. I know that in my bones, sometimes it’s the only thing I do know, but I am sure, so wherever we end up together I know that’s where I want to be. Thank you, my handsome husband for all eternity.”

Michelle turned to the audience, letting go of one of Danny’s hands and turning him with her. “And I want to also thank all of you for being part of our special day. This is the third time we’ve recited vows on July 4th. Ray has been there for all three times.” She paused turning to smile back at him before continuing. “The first time we said our vows on this day we skipped the Bauer BBQ to do it, but the other two times we’ve been here and that’s better. The Bauer BBQ is very special for our family. The tradition of marking Independence Day dates back to my Great-Grandfather Papa Bauer. He and Mama Bauer were immigrants and truly appreciated the gift that was the United States. The party got a little bigger under my Grandma Bert whose apple pie recipe I always make for this day. Finally my parents, Ed and Maureen turned it into the celebration it is today. A celebration of family, friends, and the Springfield community. A place where everyone is welcome, old connections are refreshed, and where we celebrate the spirit of this country. A lot of you who knew me then questioned my choice when I wed Danny the first time, but you were wrong. It scared me so much I was afraid to admit, but the first time I looked into Danny’s eyes I saw my soul, his soul, as one and that’s what I still see. I also see so much love and that’s a love we share with all of you. I recently read a quote that made me think about Grandma Bert’s apple pies. Love is not a single pie (p-i-e), hand out your 8 slices and you’re done. Love is pi (p-i), irrational and never ending. Thank you for being here to day to help celebrate our irrational, never ending love.” Michelle turned back to Danny, re-clasped his hand and they shared their secret smile.

Danny whispered, “That’s perfect, you’re perfect.”

Ray cleared his throat bringing attention back to him and said, “The ceremony of marriage in which you come to be united is one of the first and oldest ceremonies in the entire world, celebrated in the beginning in the presence of God himself. Marriage is a gift in that we give ourselves totally to one another. I believe that marriage is a gift given to comfort the sorrows of life and to magnify life’s joys.”

“Marriage is the clasping of hands, the blending of two hearts, the union of two lives into one, and your marriage must stand, not by the authority of the State, nor by the seal on your wedding certificate, but by the strength and power of the faith and love you have in one another.”

“Repeat after me.”

Danny grinned, “I think we’ve got this.” He grinned at Michelle. She had handed her bouquet to Mindy and then clasped both of Danny’s hands.

Danny looked deeply into her eyes and vowed,”I, Danny, take you Michelle, to be my lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part.”

Ray added, “Danny, do you take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife? Forsaking all others, be faithful only to her so long as you both shall live?”

Danny had never looked happier when he said, “I do.”

Looking just as serious, Michelle vowed in turn. “I, Michelle, take you Danny, to be my lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part.”

Ray responded, “Michelle, do you take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband? Forsaking all others, be faithful only to him so long as you both shall live?”

Michelle replied, “I do.”

Ray continued, “Having this kind of love in your hearts for one another, you have chosen to exchange rings as the sign and seal of the promises you are making to one another today. Rings are very large in their significance. They are made of a precious metal and precious stone, and that reminds us that love is not cheap or common; but indeed love is very costly and dear to us. These rings are also made in a circle and their design tells us that we must keep love continuous throughout our whole lives even as the circle of the ring is continuous. As you wear these rings, whether you are together or apart for even just a moment, may these rings be a constant reminder of the promises you are making to one another this day.”

“Danny, will you please take this ring and place it upon the finger of Michelle’s left hand, and holding her hand in yours, please repeat this promise to her saying after me: With this ring, I seal my promise, to be your faithful and loving husband, as God is my witness.”

Danny repeated, “With this ring, I seal my promise, to be your faithful and loving husband, as God is my witness.”

Ray looked at Michelle, “Michelle, will you please take this ring and place it upon the finger of Danny’s left hand, and holding his hand in yours please repeat this promise to him saying after me: With this ring, I seal my promise, to be your faithful and loving wife, as God is my witness.”

Michelle repeated, “With this ring, I seal my promise, to be your faithful and loving wife, as God is my witness.”

Michelle and Danny, you have come here today before us and before God and have expressed your desire to become husband and wife. You have shown your love and affection by joining hands, and have made promises of faith and devotion, each to the other, and have sealed these promises by the giving and the receiving of the rings. Therefore, it is my privilege as a minister and by the authority given to me by the State of Illinois, I now pronounce that you are husband and wife. Danny, you may kiss your the bride.

Ladies and gentlemen, it is my privilege to introduce to you for the first time Senor and Senora Santos.

Michelle let out a little shriek as Danny suddenly swept her off her feet, with one arm under her knees and the other around her waist. He spun around to face the audience and as Michelle’s arms automatically came around Danny’s neck and he kissed her soundly.

Author’s Note: I said at the beginning that I was withholding my initial author’s note and now you can see why. Danny and Michelle were getting ready to renew their vows at the Bauer BBQ 2014. Danny spent the night at the Bauer House to honor the tradition of not seeing the bride before the wedding. Michelle I’m sure noted that got him out of working at the BBQ and Danny responded it meant he had to make sure everything for the wedding was ready. The special thing Robbie carried in first was his tuxedo. Michelle went in from the BBQ to get ready for the wedding. Michelle and Danny are FINALLY living in their Laurel Falls House because we’ve all agreed not to mention or think about Tattoo Tony ever, ever again so it isn’t strange for them. The kids are going to spend the night at the Bauer House to watch the fireworks with Rick and Mindy, so Danny and Michelle can head out to the Springfield Inn to make some fireworks of their own. And I think then they will finally go to Majorca, but they’ll take the kids.

I put in dialogue from several key Manny scenes and referenced several others. I hope you enjoy it.

That’s what I think happened at Bauer BBQ 2014. If you want to imagine what will happen during Bauer BBQ 2015. Start writing now.

Bauer BBQ 2014 by Robansuefarm Chapter 3

November 20, 2014

Author’s Note: When I working on writing this I had to determine who would be around and how old the kids of Springfield would be now. I expanded on this in a post, but this much I hope will be helpful here. Sarah Randall was born in 2006 and she is 8 this year. Peyton was born in 2008 and she is 6 this year. Jude Bauer was born October 12, 2001 and is also 13 because he’s during the part of the year where he and Robbie are the same age, and part of the year he will be a year older than Robbie. I’m going to pretend Leah is just a fast developer and say she’s 12 just to get her back younger than Jude like she should be in the story, but to deal with the fact we’ve already seen her as a teenager on screen. Returning to her original birthdate Emma is 11 this year, to balance her with everybody else.

I would also like to apologize. This is probably the part that most people are interested in where we see other people at the BBQ, but it’s just going to be a quick peek this year. Don’t assume if I don’t mention them your favorite isn’t attending, but I’m running embarrassingly late on this so I’m moving along quickly to finish up my plot.  I’ll try to include more people next year.

She promised to be my partner in the three-legged race today. ”

Passing Down the Hat by Its Only Soaps Part 1

July 6, 2013

Publisher’s Note: And I do mean publisher, this is an original fanfic that appears here for the first time. Its Only Soaps has a different take on who Robbie should end up with and I’m thrilled. I love the idea that we’ve got an honest to goodness triangle developing complete with competing fan groups. I asked the author to provide some background on a scorecard, you can’t tell the players without a scorecard. I’ve added images of what the main characters looked like when they last appeared on screen.

Author’s Note: When it comes to where people are living (back in the 90s it was established that there were four bedrooms – Ed/Mo, the guest room – Lillian was camped out there when her house was being remodeled, Michelle’s room and Bridget’s room.) So I have it set up in the following way:

  • Danny and Michelle have a bedroom (they also do have their Laurel Falls home, but don’t live there full time due to school district issues. They wouldn’t hurt their kids education just to live in their dream house.)
  • Rick and Mindy have a bedroom (they also have Mindy’s fashion studio which has an apartment they use from time to time though Mindy is away for a month or two out of the year to go to fashion events outside of Springfield. Sometimes Rick is able to go sometimes he cannot.)
  • Robbie has as bedroom (when Jude is visiting Rick and Mindy he stays in Robbie’s room)
  • Hope has a bedroom (when Leah is visiting Rick and Mindy she stays in Hope’s room)
  • Ed lives in the garage apartment when in Springfield though he does spend some nights with Holly who has a place of her own. (If Danny and Michelle are away or Rick and Mindy are away, but any of the kids are home he stays in the main house.)

Passing Down the Hat by Its Only Soaps – Part 1

Robbie Santos was looking forward to this year’s barbecue as finally his family was allowing him to man the grill. It had taken his father Danny years to get the honor due to some unfortunate incidents involving fire, but now it was his turn even if he was still in high school. He’d get to wear the hat and cook the famous Bauer Burgers that everyone in Springfield raved about for decades.
Robbie was getting ready for the big day checking his list for everything he needed to have on hand for the BBQ including the rolls and the meat. He wanted everyone to see that he was a responsible and that his grandfather Ed’s faith in him was warranted. Robbie’s younger sister Hope was sitting on the other side of the kitchen table doing her nails and didn’t understand what the big deal was about the BBQ. Hope just thought it was a day where everyone run around like crazy taking care of everyone else and not enjoying themselves. She never wanted to be in charge, because she wanted to spend time with her friends at the pool and now she started to look at boys. The doorbell rang at the front door.

Bloss Family at Ross' Funeral

Bloss Family at Ross’ Funeral

“Robbie, get the door…”
“I’m busy Hope…you get it.”
“My nails are wet, they’ll go away if we ignore them long enough.”
“That’s true, everyone knows to go to the backdoor at the kitchen.”
Hope and Robbie go back to what they are doing and about five minutes later they hear knocking.
“Aren’t your nails dry by now?”
“Should we really answer the door, we’re all alone in the house? When I’m by myself I’m not allowed to answer it.”
“Hope, you are looking for any excuse not to answer, but since I’m in charge you have to go… I’m starting my senior year in the fall.”
“But Robbie…”

Robbie Santos

Robbie Santos

“I’m still your older brother, so go answer the door.”
Hope goes to the door, looks through the peephole and sees a teenage girl with curly red hair standing outside. Hope starts to go back to Robbie, but now he is in the living room checking to see why he hasn’t heard another voice.
“You didn’t answer the door. I said you were allowed, why didn’t you?”
“I looked through the peephole. I don’t know who is there and we aren’t allowed to have friends over without permission. There’s a teenage girl at the door. Did you invite a girl over to help you with the BBQ? You are going to get in so much trouble, you aren’t allowed to have girls at the house if we’re home alone.”
“If I had a girlfriend, Sis, I think you’d know all about it.”
There is yet another knock at a door and a yell. “I know someone is in there, I saw someone look at me. Please open the door.”
Hope goes to the door, and Robbie stays back at the couch.
“Hello, I’m looking for Dr. Edward Bauer. He’s my grandfather and he invited me to the BBQ. I’m starting college in the fall at Northwestern and I came to Springfield to visit.”
“Grandpa Ed only has two granddaughters. Who are you?”
“I’m a surprise for my grandmother Holly. I’m guessing you’re Hope, as I recognize your brother Robbie sitting on the couch. You look like your Dad.” Hope still is looking at Clarissa with confusion.
“Hope, that’s Clarissa Marler, Holly’s granddaughter who Grandpa Ed considers another grandchild just like Grandma Holly sees us as hers.”
“Nice to see you Hope. I can understand why you don’t remember me, as you moved back to Springfield less than two years after we moved away.”
“Okay, but why didn’t we know you were coming?”
“I think Grandpa Ed didn’t want anyone to tell Holly that I was coming so he didn’t say anything.”
A cellphone goes off, Hope runs out of the room to get it wondering why she doesn’t really know much of anything about Clarissa as she knew Holly had grandchildren of her own, but never saw Holly with anyone other than her and her cousins. Clarissa and Robbie continue catching up with their lives.
“That makes sense, Clarissa, Uncle Rick can’t keep a secret and Hope inherited the same gene. Most likely my parents knew and Aunt Mindy will tell Rick today once you’re with Grandma Holly, but they didn’t want me to have to lie to Hope. I never really understood why you moved, just that you did. I remember Grandpa Ed being sad.”
“We went on a trip to look at colleges for my brothers. They liked it in California, and Mom decided to stay. Your Mom shipped us a few things, and other than coming back for a few days to say goodbye I haven’t been in Springfield in forever.”
“And now you’re back…”
“Yes, I’m back after spending most of high school living in Tahiti. I got a great tan and learned French.”
“Your Mom moved you there?”
“She didn’t want to come back here or crowd my brothers, and had always wanted to go to Tahiti. It was on her list of places…” Clarissa then looks away for a second and pauses. “I went to high school online. And Mom was able to write again…”
Robbie looks at Clarissa with concern as he knows the look on her face. It is the same one he’s seen on his grandparents whenever they talk about the Marler family. He decides to change the subject.
“Since you’re in Springfield a day before the Bauer BBQ, I’m deputizing you for duty.”
“Glad to help you Robbie, but I need your help bringing in my bags. And shouldn’t we call Grandpa Ed so he doesn’t go to the airport to look for me as I arrived on an earlier flight.”
Sarah Randall

Cedars Hospital was getting prepared for the 4th of July Holiday. The ER was busier than normal as some people had decided to have their own fireworks display the night before that had gone horribly wrong. Ed was pulling extra duty so he’d have the time off to celebrate with his family.
The loudspeaker called out “Paging Dr. Ed Bauer, Ed Bauer pick up extension 2132”
“Hello, Dr. Bauer speaking.”
“Grandpa, your package is here. She’s sitting right next to me and can hear everything you say.”
“Hi Sweetie, I should be done in about an hour. Then I’ll need your help to pull off the surprise. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you she was coming Robbie, but I didn’t want Holly to know.”
“Hi Grandpa. I can’t wait to see you, but you know Holly doesn’t like surprises.”
“I know, I know, but I think she’ll make an exception for you Clarissa. I should get going, make sure she doesn’t cause a flood Robbie. Can you move her stuff into the garage apartment? She’s going to be staying there, bye.”
“I’m staying in the garage apartment. What did Ed mean by flooding?”
“I have no idea. You’re staying in the garage apartment…”
Clarissa and Robbie share a look as the scene ends.
Robbie is back in the kitchen with Hope.
“That girl was so weird Robbie.”
“Hope, why do you think she is weird? I don’t think she was weird.”
“You wouldn’t because you were too busy looking at her. She seemed sad, who is sad when they come to the BBQ.”
“Sad? She was just tired after traveling on so many planes from Tahiti. I need to go to the supermarket and get more supplies. You are coming with me, right?”
“Yes, I need some more nail polish. I decided to paint my toes red white and blue for the 4th.”
“And you need to get you’re nails done before Mom and Dad get home, so they have no idea what you did.”
“You know me so well Robbie. You’re a great big brother, who won’t tell our parents what I’m doing.”
“I won’t, but remember that they’ll be home in three hours.”
“Yes so we need to go now, get the food and come home.”
Ed comes into the Bauer house and finds Clarissa on the phone leaving a voicemail as she didn’t want to sit alone in the garage apartment.
“I’m here in Springfield, Mom. I was able to get an earlier flight and am sitting in the Bauer living room. Ed’s here, I’ve got to go. Love you, bye.”
Ed walks over to Clarissa and she stands up. They hug and he kisses the top of her head.
“Let me take a look at you. It has been too long honey. I’m so glad you’re here, and I know Holly will be thrilled to see you. We’re going to have an extremely late lunch at the patio at the country club.”
Holly arrives to the country club early and she is lead to a table with three chairs. She’s surprised, but doesn’t say anything to the waiter. Ed walks in and sees her alone.
“You’re early…you ruined my surprise.”
“My reporter sense told me that you were keeping something from me. I hope it was a good one Dr. Bauer.”
“I know you’ll love your surprise even more than I do. Turn around, Holly.”
Holly turns around and sees Clarissa waving at her from across the room. She whispers a “thank you” and gets up to greet her granddaughter. She puts her arm around Clarissa’s shoulders and leads her to the table. Holly, Ed and Clarissa have a good time catching up on life. As part of the grand tour, Holly shows Clarissa some infamous places in the family lore, like where her Grandfather Roger was shot, the ladies room where her Mom got into a fight with Harley and Josh Lewis ended up with a black eye and the pool where Holly and Blake tussled which left Blake wet and Holly victorious. Ed enjoyed sharing the story of the bachelor party, which ended abruptly with her father’s arrest.
Back at the Bauer house, Michelle and Danny returned to catch up with their kids. Michelle enjoys her work at the hospital, while Danny works as a land developer. They enter the kitchen to find it deserted.
“I thought this place would be busy with BBQ preparations, not that I’m complaining Mr. Santos.”
“Our kids are around here somewhere, Robbie’s car was in the driveway. Rick and Mindy are out for the night. Your father is nowhere to be found, so we should enjoy it while we still can. He must be entertaining his guest.”
Danny and Michelle spend the next 10 minutes enjoying the privacy of the kitchen with no one around to interrupt them.
“Danny, we need to eat. And if you don’t stop, we’ll give our kids or some other relative a show they don’t want to see.”
Danny, Michelle, Robbie and Hope are sitting at the kitchen table eating pizza as that is one thing they won’t have at the BBQ. This meal is the first the family has had alone together in weeks. They all have different schedules or others join them.
“Robbie are you doing our family proud getting ready for the BBQ? Have you started on any of my mother’s recipes?”
“Yes, Mom. That’s why the light is on in the garage apartment. I’m using that kitchen to prepare some of the side dishes.”
Danny looks to Hope and asks, “How was your day? Did you help your brother?”
“I went shopping with him and made sure he got everything on the list. Today was so boring.”
“I don’t think it was boring, Dad.”
“You wouldn’t Robbie as we had a girl over, oops.”
“While we didn’t know Clarissa was coming, Grandpa Ed told you that she was visiting. She got an early connection and took a taxi to our house, so he didn’t have to get her at the airport.”
Danny and Michelle both nod in Robbie’s direction as he continues, “She agreed to help me with the BBQ.”
Hope interrupts with, “And Robbie likes her…”
Danny and Michelle look at each other, and Michelle begins, “You know we have rules about people in the house…”
“Mom, nothing happened, nothing will happen. You and Bill weren’t banned from being in the same room together once you hit puberty. That’s how I see her, like you see Bill. I swear… I really need to get the food out of the garage apartment before Ed and Clarissa return from visiting Holly.”

Mindy Tweets the Bauer BBQ 2011

July 8, 2011

July 7, 2011 Mindy Lewis was tweeting again. This week she let us drop in on the Bauer BBQ. A few lucky tweeters got credited as being there too (including me♥). We got to hear from Manny. However, if Mindy had asked me I’d pointed out Danny was given a turn at Bauer BBQ 2001. It was a wall of flames. Danny is a former professional bartender. Keep him serving drinks instead. ☺

I look around for Michelle and Danny, wanted to give him a turn at the grill (marry a Bauer, get handed a spatula, them’s the rules)…But they’re nowhere to be found. I ask the kids where they went, and Robbie tells me, “Daddy had something he wanted to show Mommy…”In the woods.” Oh. So that’s how it is. Well, more power to them! (God knows they hit a record # of SF weddings before they got it right…Nice to know this marriage is sticking, at least.) An old friend of theirs, @Robansuefarm, is watching the kids, so, I guess it’s all good.

UPDATE June 30, 2015 – Sadly this Twitter account is no longer available and I haven’t figured out yet if there is any way to still access it. If I would have realized this I would have copied more in. Glad I saved this much. The “In the Woods” reference is from a thing Lillibuzz developed in the last couple of years.

Robansuefarm is the handle of one of Manny and Guiding Light‘s biggest fans following in her family’s footsteps of Guiding Light fandom since 1939. This blog is an effort to make it easy to find Guiding Light and especially Manny online. Check back here for her blog, find fanfic previews and fake WSPR newscasts on her YouTube, find podcasts that look back to old shows and audios of her fanfics on Blog Talk Radio, and finally follow her on Twitter and Facebook.

Manny to Melinda Sue’s Tweets

June 11, 2010

Look for the bonuses for “In a Different Light” tomorrow. Tonight I’m using the space to encourage all Manny fans to check out the next batch of officially sanctioned by P&G Tweets by Mindy.  In their version of Springfield future, Mindy has married Rick and they have adopted a son. Which now I stop to think about it doesn’t fit time wise because she doesn’t marry him until Sept. 2010 as established in the flashforward of the finale. Oh well, whoever this is doesn’t feel very restricted by canon anyway.

Anyway they’ve adopted a baby named Hudson. Lizzie’s worries about Sarah and the Bizzie baby (again shouldn’t be born yet according to….oh well, I’m letting it go) have started to infect Mindy. She decides to think of the happiest and best adjusted children she knows. Who would that be, why Robbie and Hope Santos of course. That really is true. Manny rocked as parents and I really think did a better job of parenting than anybody else in Springfield. There competition for good parents would be…(looking around and hearing crickets)…so the upshot is Mindy tweeted today that she’s on her way to see them. So there should be a batch of Tweets from her tomorrow when she does.
