Second Real Life Bauer BBQ

March 2, 2017

The Fourth of July has always been the important to the Bauer family. Starting in the early 1980s it was celebrated with a big party that everyone in town attended called the Bauer BBQ. The Bauer BBQ episodes were always some of the highest rated of the year. Manny was even married at the Bauer BBQ one year. Revisit the Bauer BBQ through the years:

Last Time on Guiding Light

Daytime Stars and Strikes began as a Bloss Bowling charity event raising money focused on the famous Bloss pairing from Guiding Light, Jerry verDorn (Ross Marler) and Elizabeth Keifer (Blake Thorpe Marler) back in 2004. At first it was in aid of cancer (verDorn is a cancer survivor), but has been focused on autism for a number of years now. The major event for many years was a bowling event where you could watch soap stars (now grown to a large group from different soaps) or pay more and play with them.

A Page is Turned

Over the years they tried other side events including concerts and most notably a dinner in 2012 in honor of the 75th anniversary of Guiding Light. Last year they amazingly decided to stage the first real life Bauer BBQ. Sadly I didn’t get a chance to go, but it made me determined to go this year and I’m proud to say I took a leap of faith and bought a ticket for all 3 events that weekend. I hope to see you there.

This year they’ve finally decided that transportation issues for fans coming from out of town could be eliminated if another event replaced bowling so joining the Bauer BBQ this year is Sing it for Autism Karaoke Event on Friday, October 6, 2017 and Venice the Series Gives Back to Autism on Saturday, October 7, 2017.

They say, “Join us for a wild ride as we embark on our second Bauer BBQ!  You can expect a lot of giggles and good old fashioned fun with this event.  Sharpen up your memory (and google past BBQ’s!) because we are having trivia contests, a Family Feud Contest, a few surprise games, an auction or two and of course, delicious, genuine Bauer Burgers!   Be the first to purchase a ticket this year, be the one who wins our trivia contests, and be the one who makes a difference for Autism.  Be there!”

Ed Bauer and Ross Marler Christmas Speech 2002

December 21, 2014

Catch up on Christmas 2002 here:
https://glmanny.wordpress.com/2013/12/30/christmas-2002-updated-2013 Ed Bauer Toast

Ed Bauer to the gathered friends and family in the Bauer Home:
“To Ross and Blake, Happy Engagement, Merry Christmas, Cheers! And to Ross thank you for looking in on my family when I was away.”

Ross Marler:
“Well, Good Doctor, Thank you for coming back home so I don’t have to take care of the trouble makers anymore.”

Ed:
“And everybody thank you for welcoming me home with such open hearts. I can’t…I can’t tell you how much it meant to me.”

Ross:
“You know these have been difficult times for many of us. Difficulties have a way of revealing what’s truly important like family and friends and good health and love. Although we celebrate each other’s happiness and joys I think we are also here to guide each other through the dark days. By the grace of God this is not one of those days, and so I wish you a wonder Christmas, a happy New Year! And God bless us all!”

Blake and Ross ToastJerry verDorn breaks character to speak to the audience:
“Starting from Christmases long, long ago the Bauers always toasted the holiday by saying ‘No one goes his way alone’ with that in mind we thank you for spending this past year with us and at this magical time we wish you all the joys of the season and may you be lucky enough to see those joys reflected in the eyes of a child. And so from all of us at Guiding Light, from our family to yours, Happy Holidays Everybody!”

Cast, Crew, and Families sing Jingle Bells.

Guiding Light was featured in the March 25, 2013 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth in the “All-Star Scrapbook”. The photo is from 1982 and features the recent additions of Jerry verDorn (Ross Marler), Maeve Kinkead (Vanessa Chamberlain Reardon Lewis) and William Roerick (Henry Chamberlain). verDorn comments: “Oh my Vanessa!..She was brought on shortly after I was. For me, actually Doug Marland was writing the show then, and he invented Vanessa for me. And we had three or four years where we were apart and together, apart and together – and doing evil things together! Because she was evil when she came on the show too….She was exactly like [our daughter] Dinah. And very good at it, too. We had great fun upsetting everybody!”  Find more in CBS Soaps in Depth.

Paulo Benedeti (Jesse Blue) was featured in the March 25, 2013 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth. The focus was on his artwork and how his mother got him into art, complete with an assortment of photos. Last seen during Stepanie’s I’m dying party on The Bold and the Beautiful, Benedeti splits his time between LA where he still acts and his hometime Boca Raton, FLorida where he does his art.

Daniel Cosgrove (Bill Lewis #4, part of the wonderful Bizzie pairing) is guest staring on the episode of Person of Interest that originally aired Oct. 15, 2013. It’s called “Reasonable Doubt.”

Stephen Schnetzer (who brought his Another World lawyer Cass Winthrop to the other P&G soaps as needed, which was AWESOME, including Guiding Light) is starring at the famous Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis in a show called Tribes. I’ve been to the Guthrie Theater it’s quite a venue for a show.
http://www.welovesoaps.net/2013/10/stephen-schnetzer-stars-in-tribes.html

Karla Mosley (Christina Boudreau, with Remy, one of the last really good new couples in the final years of Guiding Light) has a new series called Blood Brothers.

Lauren C. Mayhew (Marah Lewis #4 –  her recast scuttled the somewhat interesting crush on inappropriately aged Jesse Blue. Her most memorable storyline she partnered with Brittany Snow‘s Susan right before the Nursery Rhyme Stalker mass kidnapping) has a video called Sugar Daddy’s Girl on YouTube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6FwyADPBjQ

Laura Bell Bundy (Marah Lewis #5 who started Marony) she tweets under Laura Bell Bundy@LauraBellBundy. Watch for her chats and use this hashtag to read previous responses. #lbbchitchat
I asked her for a Guiding Light story she could tweet. She replied “Laura Bell Bundy@LauraBellBundy 1m
@Robansuefarm once when @kimjzimmer was blind in the show & they had her in heels, she dressed a mannequin up to look like her…and pushed it down the stairs in the kiddie of a scene we were in. Cause what blind person where’s heels walking down stairs.”
Bundy tweeted out “LBB MIX TAPE #1: Do Si Do”

https://twitter.com/Bonnie_Dennison/status/392675575678398464/photo/1
And a new video that would be funny (who isn’t frustrated by the fact that women’s Halloween costumes in the VAST majority of stores would be more at home in a sex shop than a candy aisle), except for the completely pointless and needless foul language that keeps pulling you out of the storyline.

Hutchison reflects on her career in soaps (she’d be pleased to come back to daytime), her role on the web series The Bay, and her theater. Hutchison splits her time between a farm in upstate New York and a New York apartment which she shares with husband John Viscardi (Father Tony on One Life to Live).

E! 1993

January 8, 2012

Another upload by the generous Blosses, today we look at a story on E! The host briefly comments that one of their more asked for stories is behind the scenes of a soap. They respond with a tour of behind the scenes lead by Liz Keifer. Although sadly we don’t get full names, this focuses much more on behind the scenes people than the cast, although Jerry verDorn also has a bigger part.

Again, in case you’re looking for certain parts find them at the following times in the clip.

Liz Keifer tours us 0:40 David Lovelace (Costume Designer) Wardrobe, 1:30 Hair Roberto and Sandy 2:05 Makeup Room Carlos Jerry verDorn 2:35 Joanne director Dry Block rehearsal

ET 1987 50th Anniversary

January 5, 2012

Back in 1987 CBS still cared enough to celebrate their soaps and the marking of Guiding Light‘s 50 years was hailed as a television milestone. Special news features were authorized, story was ramped up, and they even had a special call in vote where the winning scenes were shown at then end of each episode during the special celebratory week. Sadly ET is showing how little it learned about soaps in the couple of minutes it airs and tells you none of that. However, what we do get is good. Quick interviews with Jerry verDorn (Ross Marler), the late lamented Chris Bernau (Alan Spaulding #1), and Kim Zimmer (Reva Shayne Lewis).  Also lots of really old and very quick scene clips and stills and some looks at the cameras and other backstage stuff used.

Rolanda 1994

December 29, 2011

I never heard of this talk show, but as this clip shows it is from an era where you could actually watch a talk show and be entertained, not just count thrown chairs (Steve Wilkos), get obvious and outdated eating advice (The Chew), or grossed out (Anderson, my cousin Jewelsam will say I’m unfair with that one, but all of this is based on how they advertise themselves). You used to be able to just have fun and maybe learn a little something too or at least speculate on it. I used to actually enjoy talk shows, not anymore, sigh!

Anyway back in 1994 Rolanda did a Guiding Light episode on her show in honor of the Daytime Emmys. She also appeared as an actress on Guiding Light for an episode and I’ve actually picked her out in the episode she did, although I didn’t save the link. If I come across it again sometime, I’ll add it here.

Tangie Hill (a newspaper woman who actually used the nom de plume Lois Lane – no seriously, Roger Thorpe’s ward, and brought in to serve in the thankless position of Josh’s replacement love interest after Reva) was a rare mis-step for soap jumper Marcy Walker. She quickly floundered and if not for her portrayer I doubt anyone would remember her now.

Roger Thorpe is of course of much more interest of course and it’s always great to hear Michael Zaslow’s thoughts on the character.

Ross Marler and Blake Thorpe Marler were a supper couple who survived a Blake recast to ride out most of the rest of the show’s run together. Jerry verDorn also always offers interesting insights.
