Revelation Chapter 12

February 17, 2022

Republisher’s Note: This is another rescued story from CountryKays which we very much appreciate. Again, there aren’t any chapters in the way she copies them so the chapter breaks are where I think they make sense and likely differ from those the author used if you find it somewhere else. I also broke up the paragraphs to make them easier to read. I don’t know who the author is. Ray is going to marry Michelle and Danny tomorrow morning after his first mass, but Ray has a secret that could devastate Danny. (OK, not really seriously, why doesn’t Ray just tell him way before this?)

Revelation Chapter 12

Ray laid in his bed, still not at himself enough to speak. The medication he was on made him weak and groggy, but his mind was crystal clear, and he was aware of what had just happened. “You don’t know how right you are, Danny,” he thought to himself. “You’ve got to know the truth.”

Danny sat at Michelle’s bedside, tears freely falling from his eyes. He wasn’t sure how much she would remember. The medications she’d been given had pretty well knocked her out. His heart ached when he thought that he might have to tell her what had happened. He folded his hands together on her bed, and laid his head on them, sobbing softly.

Michelle opened her eyes, and saw her husband crying. She was immediately aware of the reason for his tears. The medications may have put her to sleep, but they didn’t dull her senses or cloud her memory. She remembered what had happened. At he sight of Danny crying next to her, she knew that she would have to be the strong one. He had been strong for her so many times, protected her, put her needs first.

Now it was her turn, and she wouldn’t fail him.

She reached out her hand and touched his hand. “Danny,” she said softly.

Danny looked up at Michelle, tears streaking his cheeks. Michelle wiped his tears with her hand, and his voice broke as he said her name. “Michelle,” and then he choked.

“Our baby’s gone,” she said. It was not a question, but a statement. She wanted him to know that he didn’t have to go through the agony of telling her that they’d lost their baby.

Danny just nodded and let his head fall onto the bed again.

Michelle sat up, as much as she could, and ran her fingers through his hair.

“It’s going to be OK, Danny,” she said through her own tears.

“How?” he asked, never lifting his head.

“I don’t know exactly, but I know we have each other, and that will get us through.”

Danny looked at his wife, his crying still heavy, and said, “I’m so sorry.”

Michelle lifted his face in her hands, and as tears fell down her face she said, “There’s no need for you to apologize.”

“But my mother…..,” Danny said, and then he choked again.

Still looking in his eyes, she whispered, “We don’t need to talk about why or how, Danny. Let’s just lean on each other.”

All he could do was nod, and hold her hands tightly.

When he’d regained some measure of composure, he sat up on the bed with her and asked, “Where do we go from here, Michelle? How do we go on?”

Michelle gave him the only honest answer she could, “I don’t know, Danny. Yesterday morning we didn’t even know I was pregnant, and now we’ve lost our baby.”

“I think we have to do something to remember our baby,” he said quietly.

“I think that’s a good idea,” Michelle said, as he wiped her tears.

“I don’t really know how, but I think we need to do something.”

They talked for a long while, neither one of them ashamed of the tears that came, each of them a comfort and strength for the other. They decided that a funeral or memorial service would be more of a production than either of them cared to deal with. Instead, they decided to make a large donation to the maternity department of the hospital, in honor of their baby. They would have their own, private memorial once Michelle was feeling better.

When Ray woke up, he saw him standing there – the person to whom he’d given his journal for safe keeping. He wanted so badly to talk, but he was still having trouble.

“It’s OK, Ray. You don’t have to talk. I will. Do you know what’s happened to Danny and Michelle?”

Ray indicated that he did with a slight nod.

“I know that you want to tell Danny yourself, but I think he has to know the truth, immediately.”

Ray nodded again.

“I’m going to go down to Michelle’s room and give the journal to him. Then, when you’re stronger, the two of you can talk about it.”

Ray squeezed his hand, as if to say thank you, and he turned and walked out the door.

“Thank You, God,” Ray silently prayed. “And please help them.”

Dr. Sedwick came in to see Michelle after she woke up. She said that, barring any complications, Michelle would be able to go home the next1 day. She explained that losing this baby should not cause them any difficulties conceiving in the future, something that made them both feel a tiny bit better.

“Thank you, Dr. Sedwick,” Danny said as she started to leave the room.

“Danny, I know this must be terrible for the two of you. There is a support group for couples who’ve experienced miscarriages, here at the hospital. It might be beneficial for you to look into it.”

“I’ll talk with Michelle about it, when she’s feeling better.”

Dr. Sedwick smiled and said, “Take care of each other. I know you will.”

Danny sat back down next to Michelle, and held her hand while she rested. Although his heart still hurt badly, he was encouraged by the strength and wisdom that Michelle had shown. He knew she was right. They had each other, and they would weather this storm together.

He managed to doze of slightly, with his head laying on Michelle’s bed. He was awakened by the sound of the door opening.

He looked up and recognized the man, but could not remember his name.

“Danny, I’m so sorry. Rick told me what happened,” the man said as he extended his hand.

Danny shook his hand, and said, “You’ll have to forgive me, but I can’t remember your name.”

“I’m sorry,” he said. “Phillip Spaulding.”

Michelle slowly became aware that someone was in the room.

“Phillip,” she whispered. “Thank you for coming.”

Phillip looked down at the girl who he’d always thought of as Rick’s baby sister, and was amazed at the woman he now realized she was. Her expression was strong and brave, in the face of such insurmountable tragedy. Having just become a father again himself, he could not imagine their pain.

“Michelle, Rick told me what happened. I want you to know how sorry I am. Is there anything I can do for the two of you?”

Michelle smiled back at him and said, “Just love your little Brad with all your heart.”

Phillip’s heart sank. He turned his attention to Danny. “I have something for you, Danny.”

He reached into his briefcase and pulled out Ray’s journal.

He explained how he’d met Ray once, and how Ray had asked him to keep the journal safe. He told them that Ray had been afraid something terrible would happen, and that’s why he needed to be sure the journal was safe. Danny could not believe what Phillip was saying.

“Ray wanted to tell you everything himself, but he’s not fully recovered yet, and you need to know what’s in this journal now.”

“I don’t understand,” Danny said, completely dumbfounded.

“I’m not saying it will be easy, especially considering what you’ve just been through, but I do think it will help you make some sense out of your life.”

Phillip stood up to leave, but first he kissed Michelle’s forehead. “You’ve grown up so much, Michelle. You really are a fine young woman.”

With that, he left Michelle’s room, the hospital, and this whole, terrible episode behind.

Danny kissed Michelle, and together they opened Ray’s journal and began to read.

Belvedere Castle, Delacorte Theatre and a Four Muskateers Christmas

December 22, 2021

There were a lot of great Christmases in Springfield over the years, but the one that was the most remembered and had the most repercussions was the year that Phillip and Beth ran away to New York to get away from her abusive step-father and Mindy and Rick (their respective girlfriend/boyfriend at the time) soon followed. Even though Phillip was afraid to use any of his money because Alan was on Bradley’s side (see note), Phillip and Beth befriended a street corner Santa named Nick who brought them together with some other lost souls for Christmas. After this story finished each year at Christmas time Nick would come to Springfield and be a source both of comfort and moving plot. I remember running into the house coming home from school in Third Grade to demand knowing if Nick had come yet.

But this post isn’t about that. It’s sharing some photos a fan with the handle @mariaft shared on Twitter some time back. They focus on the Belvedere Castle and the Delacorte Theatre which were real places in New York the show shot at. Judging by the photos, I think they were taken some time after the Four Musketeers storyline. I think maybe in 1988, but this has been sitting in notes form in my drafts for awhile and I’m not positive that’s what my note “Christmas 1988” meant. Enjoy the photos as we take a trip back to 1983 and the Four Musketeers New York Christmas.

Here’s a bit of Phillip and Beth in NYC – Find my full write up with video and commentary here.

Guiding Light Cast Roundup 83

November 7, 2019

This is the eighty-third entry in an irregular feature where we will report updates on what cast members of Guiding Light are doing now. I’m playing catch up on some soap magazine news. So as a reminder you can buy back issues:
https://glmanny.wordpress.com/2014/06/07/faq-back-issues-2014/

In the November 5, 2018 issue of Soap Opera Digest find photos from the 2018 Daytime Stars and Strikes. Read more about the event. Find photos of Elizabeth Keifer (Blake Thorpe Marler), Jerry verDorn (Ross Marler), Lauren B. Martin (Camille Bennett on As the World Turns), Sonia Satra (Lucy Cooper Spaulding, part of terrific LAM pairing, victim of Marian Crane), Elvera Roussel (Hope Bauer Spaulding #7), Grant Aleksander (Phillip Spaulding #2, adult Phillip), Michael O’Leary (Rick Bauer #5, the adult one we know and love), Ricky Paull Goldin (Gus Aituro), Justin Deas (Buzz Cooper), Margaret Colin (Margo Montgomery Hughes #1 on As the World Turns), and  Yvonna Kopacz-Wright (Mel Boudreau Bauer).

Bethany Joy Lenz (credited then as Joie Lenz) aka (Michelle Bauer Santos #4) was pictured at Lifetime’s holiday party at The Grove. See a gorgeous photo in the January 7, 2019 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

Rebecca Budig (Michelle Bauer #3, part of the Messe pairing) has a role on the new show LA’s Finest. Read about it in the November 26, 2018 issue of Soap Opera Digest. See a chain of photos showing the Christmas 1997 when Budig’s Michelle was blinded in the December 24, 2018 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

Jordi Vilasuso (Tony Santos #1 of Marony fame) is fitting in well in his new The Young and the Restless role as Rey Rosales a cornerstone of the newly established Rosales clan. A feature on his character’s romance with Sharon Newman in the November 12, 2018 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth. Vilasuso answers a round up that he recommends the book The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho read why in the January 7, 2019 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth. Visit with Jordi Vilasuso (Tony Santos #1) and his family for Christmas in the December 24, 2018 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth. He describes getting his The Young and the Restless role in the same issue. Read all about the new Geona City family in the November 12, 2018 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth. He was also the Take Five focus with an awesome photo in the December 3, 2018 issue of Soap Opera Digest. Vilasuso is featured in the me and him contrasting his style with his character’s in the September 3, 2018 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

In the August 1973 issue of Afternoon TV Mark Hulswit (Ed Bauer #3) is interviewed. I think of him as 1970s Ed and honestly a lot of the time when someone says Ed I still think of him for a second before I think of Peter Simon (Ed Bauer #4). Here’s the thing though. Ed at the time was written as a twit. I always thought he was a twit even at the time. Apparently lots of people thought of him as a hearthrob. Not to be mean, but I just don’t see it. He was a twit. I think the article “My Wife is as Liberated as She Wants to be…” kind of sums up why I think so. The rest of the article deserves the title. It does include a line about having a dinner every month that “includes Charita [Bauer] (Bert Bauer) or Caroline [McWilliams] (Janet Mason) or Tony or Franny [Myers] (Peggy Fletcher)….I still keep in touch with some of the people who were on the show in the past, but have left. Mike Zaslow (Roger Thorpe), for instance.” An entire paragraph includes talking about how close he is to Stefan Schnabel (Stephen Jackson – Rick’s grandfather). including snow shoeing at “Steve’s cabin in Vermont.” This is kind of cool too, his two daughters were extras one day on Guiding Light “We went on location to a park in New Jersey. Tina and Jenny were supposed to be little children walking home from school. It was raining that day, and they spent five hours walking in the rain.” It seemed to cure them of the desire to be in show business.” So they must have at least occassionally gone on location in the early 1970s. I found the rest of the names he dropped and added last names and character names, but I honestly have no idea who Tony was. I don’t see a match on the cast list I have.

The September 19, 2018 issue of the CBS Soaps in Depth gives a recap of the 1998 storyline, The Nursery Rhyme Stalker – it was Holly as she fell apart after Fletcher took off with their autistic daughter Meg.

Grant Aleksander (Phillip Spaulding #2, adult Phillip) is returning as Detective Asher in off-Broadway’s longest running play, Perfect Crime. He previously played the role last summer.  Robert Newman (Josh Lewis) has also done some time in the role. https://daytimeconfidential.com/2019/01/16/grant-aleksander-returns-to-perfect-crime?fbclid=IwAR28KyXbPurL8E9YQTrmgbiau6DRKw2VX1SfhJW-uo4vpCwmDq-KIxwyBoM

A roundup of costumes in soaps included really nice photos of Reva during the Civil War through the painting episode and Harley and Blake as Irna Phillips and her secretary Rose. Find it in the November 12, 2018 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

The September 3, 2018 issue of Soap Opera Digest features a roundup of weddings where one of the principals is shot including Alan Spaulding and Doris Wolfe.

Scott Bailey (Sandy Foster, who started with the Mole puppet & then was falsely revealed to be Jonathan Randall) and his wife Adrienne Frantz (Amber Moore Forrester on The Bold and the Beautiful) is pictured with his daughter at her birthday party in the January 7, 2019 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

Taye Diggs (Sugar Hill, music producer involved in Dehlia and Drew Jacobs) is playing the coach in a new CW high school drama called All American. Read more about it in the September 17, 2018 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

Rebecca Staab (Jessie Matthews, of Jessie and Simon fame) is given a feature interview in the December 3, 2018 issue of Soap Opera Digest. It talks all about her recent work making multiple films for the Hallmark Channel and that her current boyfriend is William deVry (Julian Jerome, General Hospital). Find it with multiple photos in the article.

Lawrence Saint-Victor (Remy Bourdeau with Christina one of the last great couples) recently had a son, Christian Lavelle. Read an interview about it in the December 24, 2018 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

When Sherry Stringfield (Blake Marler #4, the one who tried to marry Phillip) left the show back in 1992, Rick Hearst gave her a farewell party for her at Fleet Street a restaurant near the then Guiding Light studio. Stringfield then went to London for two months according to the August 25, 1992 issue of Soap Opera Magazine. Beverlee McKinsey was my personal goddess. I learned a lot from her about being a lady and being unladylike manner. Phillip is Suspicious Danny Tries to Lie to Michelle But Can’t Tues Sept 25 2001

July 31, 2018

Check out my latest episode guide post.

Tues., Sept. 25, 2001 – At Company: Michelle and Danny are having a breakfast date. Michelle is rightfully upset that Carmen is out on bail.  Michelle: “Who in their right mind would let that woman out on bail? I know that they gave her some kind of electronic ankle bracelet, but this is a woman who has faked her death more than once!” They discuss possibly getting a restraining order, but decide it might make things worse instead of better if Carmen saw it as a dare. Danny gets a call. He checks his caller ID and doesn’t answer it. Michelle wonders why and he lies and tells her it was a wrong number. She is suspicious but lets it go.

Danny: “If you weren’t so beautiful….We should do this more often, have a date for breakfast.”

Michelle: “But I miss the baby oatmeal in my hair.”

Danny: “You look a lot better without it. {Kiss} I just want to think about my beautiful, {Kiss} sexy {Kiss} wife who tastes like syrup.”

*******

Michelle: “How long will it take you to get across town?” {Kiss}

Danny: “About 10 minutes which should give me a few more minutes to tell my wife how gorgeous she is, how much I love her.” {Kiss}

Michelle with a laugh: “Are we making a spectacle of ourselves?”

Danny: “Who cares? {Kiss} Wait until you see what I’ve got planned for you tonight!”

Hey! Danny pays cash for breakfast! In the last couple of years of the show no one ever pays for anything at Company. Danny leaves for the office and forgets his phone. Michelle picks it up and goes after him. At Infierno: Bernardo leaves a message for Danny to get back to him with 12 hours. After he hangs up he tells Carmen that Danny doesn’t know she is pulling the strings on the deal. Carmen tells him that Danny will go for it, she knows her son. Bernardo tells her that her son has changed and she should also be thinking about her grandson. Carmen tells him she knows what she is doing. Tony comes in and greets Carmen. Carmen tells Tony that he doesn’t know her very well and she thinks they should do something to change that. At Spaulding: Danny goes to his Bad Fake Computer ProgramAccess Approved Alan Personal Accountcomputer and in moments has access to Alan’s personal accounts. “That was too easy,” he says as access approved pops up.  Phillip comes in and when he sees Alan’s personal account accessed on the screen asks him what he is up to. Danny tells him he is doing his job. Phillip thinks Alan’s personal accounts are off limits.

Phillip: “What the hell are you doing? Danny?”

Danny: “What?”

Phillip: “Who authorized you to access my father’s personal account?

Danny: “No one.”

Phillip: “So….. you just broke into his financial file?”

Danny: “Yea, that’s right.”

Phillip: “And…you just freely admit that?”

Danny: “Yea. I’m writing up a full report on it.”

Phillip: “A report?”

Danny: “Yea. Turns out that Spaulding is a hell of a lot more vulnerable than I ever suspected. Originally I thought we were just going to have shore up the internal systems, incription, software stuff like that, but now we’re going to need a whole new system of fail safe internal security measures. I’m thinking we’re going to need infrared sensors on the doors that are leading to the sensitive computers, laser beams in all the areas that have access to the computers. These computers are the heart and soul of Spaulding and the way it is now, anyone can walk in off the street and break in. It’s unacceptable.”

Phillip: “And I suppose you would want to oversee the installation of all this equipment. That way you’d know how it works, where it might be vulnerable.”

Danny: “Well, yea, it’s my job.”

Phillip: “Your job seems to be expanding.”

Danny tells Phillip if he has a problem to take it up with Alan. Phillip tells Danny not to underestimate Alan or he will regret it. Phillip tells Danny to leave his dad’s personal account out of whatever Danny is working on.

Danny: “Don’t you think that should be up to Alan?”

Phillip: “Alan, Alan? Isn’t that still Mr. Spaulding to you?”

He asks Danny to go down to personnel for some security questions. When Danny gets back in his office he finds Michelle there bringing him his phone. She tells him that she listened to his messages (which means she knows his pin – I love that) and she wants to know why Bernardo has called him. He tries to lie at first but she wants the truth and tells Danny that they have to be honest to be in a marriage.

Michelle: “You’re lying to me? Is this the kind of marriage that you want because it’s not what I signed up for, not by a long shot.”

Danny: “You know the only reason I would lie to you would be to protect you and Robbie.”

Michelle: “And it has always backfired.”

Danny: “No.”

Michelle: “The only right way for us is to share everything. That means good and bad. If we can’t do that then it’s NOT a marriage. Please, don’t shut me out.”

Danny turns on a scrambler and whispers to Michelle that the other families want him back and he doesn’t know any way out. Phillip goes to Alan with his concerns about Danny. Alan tells Phillip that he is right about Danny and Phillip doesn’t want to admit it.

NOTE: The sound on the clip is really soft for some reason. It’s soft on both highlight clip channels. Adjust the volume.

My Comments: Well, there’s a good answer for those people who say you need action for a good soap. I just went back and watched that day in the life breakfast several times and it got better with each watching. Then they set you up right there to think Danny’s planning on stealing right then when we cut to the office, but actually he’s just doing his job and testing their security. That really is a good messing with your expectations. This is another one of those key Phillip/Danny scenes that I talk about it. This is Phillip fully twisted up about how Alan is trusting Danny and telling Phillip that Danny is a good, strong, smart man who got back and protected his family as Phillip has singuarly failed to do. Phillip really doesn’t seem to understand what Danny is doing at Spaulding and why. Phillip also doesn’t understand the tech side. He never really was good on the tech side. Alan-Michael was much more of a tech whiz. Alan might not understand either, but he IS smart enough and knows enough to believe Danny knows what he’s talking about. That rings true – it isn’t just because it’s Danny – because Alan has hired tech experts before. Alan sincerely wants Danny working for Spaulding. Even after this crashes and burns he asks Danny to return a couple of different times and at one point even tasks Olivia with trying to get him to return to Spaulding. I like this sequence because it shows Danny DOES know what he’s doing, DOES have a legitamate work plan. I considered Phillip one of my good Springfield friends from the time he was in high school, but I have to admit, sometimes he’s just a jerk. This is one of those times. I especially don’t get why Philllip reacts poorly to Danny calling Alan by his first name. Sure, they’re not friends yet, but they have been next door neighbors for a couple of years now, Alan had been dating his mother-in-law who was for better or worse actively in their lives, and Alan had personally hired Danny. I don’t think it’s out of line for Danny to call Alan by his first name, Meta, Rick, and even Michelle certainly did. Danny coming in and Michelle spinning around in his chair was pretty cool. This is also a Mission Impossible click up. Danny starts using all sort of cool tech. The scrambler is pretty cool. Actually that selling Infierno cover story was really good. It was smart of Michelle to figure it out so quick.

Claire Tries to Regain Michelle’s Good Graces September 18 20 2001

June 12, 2018

Check out my latest episode guide post.

Tues., Sept. 18, 2001 – Claire stops by to see Danny in his new office and complains that she lost her standing at the mansion in the attempt to get him the job. Alan interrupts and points out that he earned the job in spite of Claire.

We see Danny’s gorgeous Spaulding office for the first time when Michelle brings him his Palm Pilot. (A palm pilot was kind of an early, less powerful, less flexible version of a cross between an iPad and an iPhone.) Michelle comes over to Danny to kiss him.

Danny: “Don’t get me started…I know we have to christen this desk, but not today I’ve got to focus.”

Michelle: “That’s no fun.”

Danny: “You know I think you’re the bad influence in this relationship.”

***

Danny: “Does it feel to you that we’ve stepped into a time warp and come out in another dimension?”

Michelle: “It’s a good world. Happy.”

Alan tells Danny that Phillip disagrees with his proposal to buy a new system to fight off computer viruses from a start up company and asks Danny if he’s up to debating Phillip. Danny says he knows what Spaulding needs and he’s perfectly OK debating Phillip.

Danny: “So it’s me against your son, huh?”

Alan: “Let the best man win.”

After a discussion between the three of them, Alan takes Danny’s side on which product to buy. It really ticks off Phillip.  Michelle agrees to let Claire throw a baby shower for her.

Thurs., Sept. 20, 2001 – At Infierno: Danny comes in to see Tony. He talks about his new job and how great things are going. Danny loves the respect that comes along with his new life and feels powerful. Danny is really happy. Danny tells Tony that it used to be that looking forward 30 years he saw the graveyard or the pathetic way Carlos lives. Tony challenges him so now he thinks he could be the next Alan Spaulding? Danny says he could be. Tony is dismissive thinking they will never really accept Danny. They talk about Michelle and Robbie and Tony tells Danny that Josh was cleared of the bribery charges after Tony arranged for the phony evidence to be revealed. Romeo tells Danny that Tony didn’t take any credit for his part and he isn’t happy about it. Danny wraps things up and tells Tony he is heading home. Romeo makes fun of Danny saying he was so tough and now he carries his wife’s packages, mows the lawn, and changes diapers. Danny smiles at him condescendingly. Danny: “Real men know how to change diapers.” Just as he leaves, Carlos shows up wanting to talk to Danny. Carlos congratulates Danny on his new life but reminds him that he can’t just leave the family.  Carlos about Carmen: “Remarkable woman, more lives than a cat.” Carlos tells Danny he had a deal with him and will honor it, but he didn’t deal with the other families. If he does one more favor, they will leave him alone. He has access to Spaulding’s finances; Carlos wants Danny to relieve them of $25 million. Carlos tells Danny there is a hierarchy higher than the three families that Danny never heard about.

Carlos: “Orders from above.”

Danny: “Above what? Did God send you on this mission?”

At Company: Meta, Claire and Michelle are at Company waiting for the guests to arrive at the baby shower that Claire tried to put together overnight, months after Robbie was born. Meta wonders what time the guests will arrive. Claire thinks they are just being fashionably late. Meta doesn’t think anyone is coming. Meta: “Did anyone actually say they were coming?” Michelle is ready to pack it in and take Aunt Meta and head home. Just then, Maria arrives with gifts, saying her invitation must have been lost in the mail since she is the baby’s great-grandmother. Claire tries to get rid of Maria but she isn’t leaving. Michelle starts to open her gifts. Meta gives her a framed picture of Maureen. Maria gives another customer her camera and asks her to take a picture of all of them. Michelle thinks it is about time to leave and she and Meta start to gather their stuff just as Carmen arrives, with gifts.

My Comments: Danny has a gorgeous office. It throws the broom closet Alan has at the end of the series into sharper focus. 😦 Notice when Danny shows Michelle the brass name plate for his desk (I have one of those. It’s pretty cool.) we get a nice shot of his wedding ring. They haven’t done it a lot lately, but especially early on and again during the next break up Manny focuses on the rings and wearing the rings a lot more than other soap couples. First that bit with Michelle getting Danny “started” and the fact that he doesn’t ask IF they’re going to have sex on the desk, it’s just a matter of when is so awesome and so them. Second, that conversation although we only have a truncated version is important because this is what Alan does to his children. He sets them against each other as Brandon set him and Alex against each other. Alan doesn’t mean it maliciously he thinks it brings out their best. That short exchange says it as blatantly as it can be that’s what he’s doing, treating Danny both as a goad to Phillip and as he would if Danny was his son. I just think it’s clear the whole while Alan sees Manny as his and Hope’s second chance. While being a Spaulding is always the ticket to be first at Spaulding, it doesn’t guarantee your space there and I could totally see an alternative version of Springfield where Danny stays and actually takes over running Spaulding or opens his own legitimate, highly successful security business. I WISH they had let them have a little more perfectly happy before they drop the hammer. This instant party is very like Claire right now. I’m sorry they’ve made her this desperate. I hope I can find some more good Claire sometime. Claire really was great at the beginning. This shower is quite the opportunity to bring people we don’t want together.

https://glmanny.wordpress.com/2014/06/07/faq-back-issues-2014/

Bethany Joy Lenz (our dearly beloved Michelle Bauer Santos #4) guest starred on Grey’s Anatomy. The episode is called “1-800-799-7233.” It’s the winter premiere of the second half of the season (Season 14, Episode 9) and originally aired January 18, 2018. Her character’s name is Jenny. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt7043736/

Morgan Englund (Dylan Lewis, Billy and Reva’s son who ended up with Bridget) is the subject of a where are they now feature in the July 3, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest. After GL, Englund wanted to go into music, but he was a single father so he decided he needed something more regular. Following in Dylan’s shoes he became a first responder and then part of the fire department. Then in 2017 he decided to try to get into music again. About his connections to the Guiding Light cast he says “I just talked to Melissa Hayden [Bridget Reardon Lewis] yesterday because she’s hopefully going to be involved in some way with the video. We connect every couple of years and want to do something together. And every time I see Kim [Zimmer, Reva Shayne Lewis], we’re right back to where we were before, so there’s a lot of love there. I loved working with her and Jordan [Clarke, Billy Lewis]. Maureen Garrett [Holly Reade] and I also exchanged messages recently….GL didn’t hire just any people; [they cast] mostly theater actors, like [the late] Michael Zaslow [Roger Thorpe]. They were amazing actors to work with. I feel very fortunate.”

In the May 14, 2018 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth Sharon Newman’s Crimson Lights gets a shout out because – unlike Company in the last couple of years – people actually pay for what they eat. Go Sharon!

Joseph Campanella (a criminal named Joe Turino) died May 16, 2018. Campanella was an incredibly busy actor appearing on many shows on daytime, primetime, film, and the stage over the decades until his retirement in 2009. Guiding Light was his second regular series role and we was on between 1959-1960. I have to idea who this character was. I’m glad we got the name, but if anyone has more details, please share.

Laura Wright (Cassie Layne #1, Reva’s long lost sister) talked about her time on Guiding Light when her character stayed with Edmund when they were trying to get pregnant and impregnated Dinah Marler. Brian Mertes, who was my director on Guiding Light, taught me that I can justify absolutely anything as an actor. He wouldn’t let the stay in the no and he taught me to just go for it. He’d say, “We have to do this. So why would your character do it? I’m not the actor who would say, “That doesn’t make sense to me,” or put in changes or complaints, ever, because I still justify anything you hand to me.” Read about it in the February 26, 2018 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

The 1997 Time Capsule round up article in the July 3, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest list these turn over in the TPTB at Guiding Light: Paul Rauch took over as executive producer, succeeding Michael Laibson; Head Writers Michael Conforti, Victor Miller and Nancy Williams Watt were replaced by James Harmon Brown and Barbara Esensten; and the show celebrated major milestones; the 60th anniversary of its radio debut and the 45th anniversary of its move to TV.”

The 2003 Time Capsule round up article in the February 26, 2018 issue of Soap Opera Digest list these turn overs in the TPTB at Guiding Light: John Conboy was named EP, and Millee Taggart resigned as head writer, succeeded by Ellen Weston and Donna Swajeski.”

A spooky story round up in the October 30, 2017 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth includes the end of the Cleva (Reva’s clone) story complete with photo. It also has photos of David Kimball (Killer carved in his forehead) from The Young and the Restless and from As the World Turns the James-Barbara-Gunnar time travel story and Shannon O’Hara return from the dead despite her shrunken head storylines.

In the July 24, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest has a close up photo of Vincent Irizarry (Lujack/Nick McHenry) in his disguise he wore for the end of his role on Deimos Kiriakis on Days of Our Lives. Read an article about his character’s death and an interview with him in the July 3, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

CBS Soaps in Depth online celebrated Kim Zimmer‘s (Reva Shayne Lewis) birthday in February. Check out the photos across her long career. http://www.cbs.soapsindepth.com/posts/guiding-light-kim-zimmer-birthday-124616/photos/kim-zimmer-gal-01-132496

Ellen Parker who played Maureen Reardon Bauer #2 announced she was in the independent film called Ties to Rachel that was then seeking a distributor in the May 27, 1997 issue of Soap Opera Weekly.

During the heighth of the Annie-Reva feud around when Annie faked Reva pushing her down the stairs, Suzanne Schwarzer (GL’s then costume designer) found a company called Annie Reva (in a total coincidence). She bought several of their pieces for the cast. Read more about it Soap Opera Weekly issue May 13, 1997. The article also spells out the complicated shooting of the actual fall. It mentions stunt woman Janet Paparazzo, director Bruce Barry, and stunt coordinator Peter Hock. It also looks as if Reva could actually be charged (it hasn’t happened, but hypothetically it could).

The May 27, 1997 issue of Soap Opera Weekly did a Where Are They Now? feature on Val Dufour. He left acting right after he left his role of attorney John Wyatt on Search for Tomorrow in 1980. He gave this great quote. “But the real challenge is the development of the characters and the day to day movability of it, because the writers change. I once told Mary Stuart (the last Meta Bauer on Guiding Light) that we should have been given an award for rewriting.”

Christmas Time Fire at Revas House

December 24, 2017

Did Danny Know?
https://glmanny.wordpress.com/2009/09/21/did-danny-know

We’re around Christmas time. A quick summing up of what is going on when we join the show already in progress. Abby shot Roy Meecham and his friends want revenge, despite the fact that she is facing murder charges. Abby has been living alone in the Bauer garage apartment. Annie is living with Alan, but hasn’t gotten over Josh. Beth is living in the Spaulding Mansion and wants Phillip back, but he is involved with Harley Cooper. Michelle Bauer and Jesse Blue (Messe) are getting ready to elope. They are meeting at the lighthouse before they go away. The interview Alan talks about was an interview of Annie Dutton on a local TV show at Towers about her engagement to Alan that Reva disrupted. Nola, for reasons I’ve never figured out, was trying to breakup Jezz. Michelle is at Reva’s house with Reva and Abby in separate rooms when Roy’s friends throw a Movoltov Cocktail throw Reva’s window starting a fire that will blind Michelle.

There are 3 episodes of the fire. I have them complete, but in multiple parts. I’ve numbered the episodes. I don’t have exact dates. I’ll put my comments before each link to help you find the particular part you want.

Episode 1 – Michelle is visited by Maureen, The boys start the fire.

Episode 3

They are jumping on Annie too quickly. Sure Annie is nuts, but she is rarely counterproductive. If she’d set the fire she’d checked before she started it. “Those scarfs Mama knitted for them, the recordings H.B. made” what awful things to lose. Cassie, you might know what Annie is capable of, but we know what you’re capable of, get down off your high horse. Thank god they found Michelle! Frank meets Cassie for the first time.

What You Need to Know About Phillip Spaulding Before the Next Story Arc

July 19, 2017

What You Need to Know

Phillip Spaulding plays a very important if minor role in the Manny story. Although we have seen Philip intersect with the story before, this period is when we see Phillip connect with Manny the most. So who is Phillip?

Phillip And….

Phillip Spaulding is one of the keystone characters of Guiding Light history. His introduction in the late 1970s lead to a long and complicated parentage story that not only looked at specifics, but also asked questions about what it really means to be a parent, should being adopted matter, what decisions really are best for the child and which ones are just best for you. (It also kicked off a reunion for Justin and Jackie Marler  – his bioparents – whose chemistry and on screen appeal glossed over a pretty awful backstory. – Seriously now I’ve read up on them why did I love them so much again?)

Phillip and… is important because Phillip was first and foremost about his relationships with other characters on the show. That’s how he drove story and provided throughlines for many other characters. His return in the last year of the show completely turned around and regenerated a show that had completely lost its way. So most of what you need to know about Phillip starts out Phillip and…..

And Rick Bauer

After the cancellation announcement a lot of articles came out (mostly ones where they had talked to Kim Zimmer) that called Jeva (Josh Lewis and Reva Shayne) the flagship couple of the show. I don’t think they were. They were central, but the “couple” who defined the show from the late 1970s through the end of the show were best friends Phillip Spaulding and Rick Bauer. They are what drove story, not just their own, but other people’s.

Phillip and Rick became best friends as teenagers attending the same high schools and living next door to each other (most of the time). Even though their relationship was often tested (Phillip impregnated Rick’s wife or fiance twice and Rick did it to Phillip once), they remained best friends. Even after Phillip went nuts and kidnapped Rick’s kid (it’s a long story), Rick was willing to help Phillip get out of a mental hospital when he got better.

The Phillip/Rick connection tied families together. The relationship between the Spauldings and the Bauers was a ridgepole across the canvas. Fans valued this connection and they were so vocal about it that for a time when both actors/characters were off canvas the show that the attempted to create a lite version with Frank Cooper and A.C. Mallet.

In terms of the Manny story, Rick is of course Michelle’s older brother and Phillip was his sounding board through all of his concern about her relationship with Danny. In fact, it was Phillip’s idea that Rick have Michelle committed to try to keep them apart.

And the Four Musketeers

Not long after Rick and Phillip started attending Springfield High School (they’d been in boarding school before) that they befriended first Mindy Lewis and then Beth Raines, forming a group known as the Four Musketeers. They were a rectangle that changed partners several times and those relationships drove story from the early 1980s through the end of the show. (It wasn’t a coincidence that their high school reunion was featured in the last year.) In fact the grouping was so successful that the show tried to copy it a few times. The most successful of their attempts brought in an aged Alan-Michael Spaulding, and introduced Vanessa and Ross’ daughter Dinah Marler and Harley Cooper. (Plus Cam, but Cam was pretty irrelevant and boring until he landed on 90120.)

The connection to the Manny story is TPTB were clearly aiming for another run at this with the younger set slightly before Manny blew up their plans. They were gearing up for another go with Michelle, Bill Lewis, Drew Jacobs, and Jesse Blue when Danny came into town and blew up that storyline.

And Beth Raines

Rick and Phillip had been best friends for years when a new girl moved to town, Mindy Lewis. Soon after, thanks to Mindy and Beth sharing a hospital room, they met Beth Raines and became a foursome. Although other people distracted Phillip and Beth, ever since high school Beth and Phillip had a bond that none of the other people they were involved with ever really understood. Although most of Phillip’s other exes would say that their relationships with Phillip didn’t work out because he always felt an inexplicable need to rescue Beth and she played into it, I don’t think that’s true. I don’t think Beth was a weak victim even if Phillip did periodically rescue her and tried to other times – which often ended in disasters and once even a real, if small, war. Frankly, Beth had been through a lot more than any other woman on the show — with the possible exception of Reva — and it was amazing she was even functioning. Yes, she got into bad situations and expected Phillip, Rick, and Mindy to help get her out, but the aid was mutual and she helped them out when needed to.

What it mostly came down to was that Beth wanted someone romantic who would make her feel safe and sometimes with his strand of instability in his make-up Phillip couldn’t always give her that and Phillip — having been raised with Spaulding traditional values — always thought he should be able to have both Beth and the latest flavor of the month. When the show ends they have gotten married again and I think that’s really where they belonged, where they were happiest. I hope they both finally figured it out too. Even before that happened anyone Phillip was involved with needed to understand, Beth doesn’t go away. Even when Phillip and Beth weren’t romantically connected there was an incredibly strong bond between them.

And Alan Spaulding

Phillip was raised by Alan Spaulding not finding out until he was 18 that he was adopted. That put a strain on his relationship with Alan when he found out that Alan had been lying to Phillip his entire life. Even before that Phillip never wanted to become a businessman like his dad. He had all sorts of “escape” plans. They involved everything from being a professional tennis player to a writer. However, as he got older he couldn’t deny his talent and desire to also be a businessman. He would spend most of his life bouncing back in forth between writing (newspaper, novels, etc.) and being a Spaulding executive.

Alan’s father Brandon Spaulding was a truly evil man. He pitted his children against each other, competing for his affection and control of the company. Alan was a much better man, but had these idea hardwired in. He would also pit his children against each other to grind out what he saw as weakness, etc. He did truly love his children, but that didn’t stop him.

It should also be noted in Alan’s favor that he was one of the very few characters on any soap that didn’t value biology above adoption. Alan never saw Phillip as anything less than his son and Phillip was in fact his favorite child. It was a complicated relationship though. Alan shot Phillip twice, once before this point in the timeline by accident and once after this point on purpose as part of an effort to get Phillip help and to save his grandchildren.

And Danny Santos

So far Danny has interacted with Phillip more than Alan and that has been a significant if rarely played relationship. Early on during the Ben Warren feud Danny went to Philip, scion to scion, but Phillip underestimated Danny and wouldn’t meet him on equal ground. Later when Michelle and Danny are divorced during a dinner with Michelle, Phillip told her that he now saw Danny as a good man. Phillip was too concerned with his own problems during the next part of the Manny story and they are only reconnecting now.

Phillip, still being wary about being involved with Danny and having already had his first dose of being pitted against Danny by Alan, shows up to feel Danny out and put him on his guard. That’s one of the most important Danny-Phillip scenes but the important scenes between them will continue to show up all the way through the final scenes of the show.

In many ways, Danny and Phillip were very similar. They were both male scions of powerful and rich families who believed they had the right to run roughshod over the law. They both had complicated relationships with their families, but despite the fact they both realized that some of what their families had taught them was wrong. In a lot of ways they were faced with the same problems and started from the same place, but ultimately Phillip accepts that Danny is the one of them that found the right answers. But at this point in the story the game is still in play.

Philip Talks to Danny Before Comes to Spaulding September 6 2001

July 11, 2017

Check out my latest episode guide post.

Thurs., Sept. 6, 2001 – Philip reminds Alan that he thinks it wasn’t the best idea to give Danny Santos a job in security. Alan tells Phillip that if you want to protect something you should hire someone who can think like a thief. Alan tells Phillip he thinks Danny is going straight and he wants to give him a chance. Phillip is surprised but says he will get better acquainted with Danny. At the Bauer House: Ray comes in and sees Danny studying the security logs from the past ten years at Spaulding. Ray tells him that Carmen asks to see a priest and he is going to have to go see her. Danny tells him to be careful and never turn his back to her. Ray leaves and Danny goes back to work. Phillip comes in and sees Danny. Danny asks if he is there to see Rick and Phillip admits that he came to see him.

Phillip: “I love this place so much. It’s the one place in my life that never changes. I can always count on this place and the Bauers.”

Danny: “Ya, they’re great people.”

Phillip: “They are, they really are. Michelle’s like a little sister to me. I don’t see very much of my own.”

Danny: “No, me either. I sent Pilar to Europe when, you know when things started heating up around here. I’m hoping to get to see her soon.”

Phillip: “Is she still with Bill Lewis?”

Danny: “Ya, ya, ya, [with a chuckle] they’re running around and having a good time.”

Phillip: “That’s funny. Bill’s a good kid.”

Danny: “Ya.”

Phillip: “I feel so old every time I look at him now. And Michelle, the two of them. You know what? I can remember I sat in this room and watched the two of them to make a pinkie pact that they would marry each other someday. For a long time we thought it was going to happen.”

Danny: “What a shock I must have been for all of you.”

Phillip: “Hey, Danny she seems to love you very much. and you seem very happy together. That’s all that matters.”

Danny: “Is that why you’re here? To give me a kind of left handed blessing?”

Phillip: “Uhhhh, not about that, but I guess ya sort of. OK look. My father and I have a somewhat unconventional relationship, but in our own odd way we try to look out for each other.”

Danny: “So this is you looking out for your father?”

Phillip: “He very much wants to give you a chance to make this work outside the family business.”

Danny: “But you’re not sure.”

Phillip: “I don’t know, but I’m willing to try. That’s why I’m here. That actually is why I’m here. I am here to welcome you to Spaulding Enterprises.”

Danny: “A personal welcome.”

Phillip: “A very personal welcome because I intend to take a very personal interest in your career. I’d hate to see anything go wrong for any of us.”

He starts out with some small talk about growing up with Rick and Michelle and how he can really tells Danny loves her. Phillip says he and his father have an odd relationship so he came there to welcome Danny to Spaulding because he doesn’t want anything to go wrong for any of them.

My Comments:
This is a short scene to break out on its own, but I wanted it on its own because of the importance of the Phillip-Danny relationship. From Phillip helping Rick set up the kidnapping Michelle to the psych ward, to them locking horns over the plan to get rid of Ben Warren, to their conversation at the 2009 Bauer BBQ and the addition of Manny to the Four Musketeers their relationship raised up at critical plot points. Their relationships as scions of  important families in town. Even when they are in competition Danny is more Phillip’s equal than anyone else in town. I don’t think they played this story as often as they should, but when they did play it, it was utterly perfect as this scene is.
