The Trade Towers Fell September 11 2001

October 3, 2017

Check out my latest episode guide post. I wrote this before Sunday’s attack, but I think this is still fitting, maybe more so.

What Was the September 11, 2001 Attack

This year I didn’t do a September 11th post because I knew I was almost here in the episode guide. Although it has been 16 years, so no one under 20 remembers it live now, the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the failed attempt on the Capitol building (which passengers realized what was going to happen and attacked the terrorists leading to the crashing of the plane into a field in Pennsylvania instead) was a big deal. Previous terrorist attacks on America in the late 20th century had all come from homegrown terrorists protesting situations in America such as the Oklahoma City bombing (blew up a courthouse including a daycare) or various smaller attacks with low death tolls such as the Atlanta Olympic Games bombing.

The September 11, 2001 attacks were a foreign organization’s deliberate act of war on the United States with a much bigger body count and only a handful of stupid decisions on the terrorists part kept it from being a lot worse. It ranks up there with Pearl Harbor, the Kennedy Assassination, the space shuttle Challenger blowing up on take-off as an event so big where you were when it happened is burned into your memory and even passed down. I wasn’t alive for the first two, but I can tell you when and where several family members heard the news from their stories. This wasn’t a terrible event that would then pass into gray memory, this was an actual attack and we hadn’t had an honest full scale attack on American mainland since the Indian Wars of the 1870s more than a century before. (Pearl Harbor was an American territory at the time of the attack, but well into the Pacific a good distance from the mainland. There were a few brief skirmishes like with Nazi subs landing people on our shores during World War II, but they were very small, scattered and easily dealt with.) It was also a change for hijackings. All previous plane hijackings had been aimed at either ransom or flying the hijackers somewhere they wanted to go or both. Although there was some danger people were told to remain calm if this happened because almost everyone got out alive through the ransom. This was an attack on a soft target (not military) by an organization that didn’t have an easily defined ground to launch a large scale counter-attack against. (Iraq and Afghanistan had enough connections with the terrorist groups that they were invaded by American troops in an effort to destroy the movement there to prevent future attacks.)

Last Bit of Normalcy

It was ironic that this moment of Manny thinking everything was fine, that they were passing into normal life, was on the last day before the rules of normal changed for everyone. Even though people seem to be settled into more or less normalcy again that normal now includes a real chance of being involved yourself or someone you know or know of in a terrorist attack while going about your daily lives. Although the attacks have been kept to a minimum in the United States, Europe is now attacked with frightening regularity. So enjoy this last bit of peace from the last post because for both us and Manny an attack is even now underway on that day of September 10, 2001, we just don’t know it yet.

What Do We Do

As I explained above this was an unprecedented event. Even after the strike of the first tower, people assumed it was an accident. There had been a couple of small plane crashes into buildings by accidents in the year before so the idea it was a terrorist attack didn’t enter people’s minds until the second plane hit. Such an attack had been foreseen by the government as a possibility during World War II, but this came out of nowhere and hadn’t even been thought of as even a possibility by most people. In addition while the structure of the Pentagon was built for the unlikely possibility of attack (in fact the section the plane hit had just been retrofitted to make it more secure) the World Trade Center was the original of a widely copied design of skyscraper that left the building especially vulnerable to this kind of attack. Everything hangs off a central core which once breached and melted by the extreme heat of the resulting high temperature fires and compromised walls left the tower no support and no way out with all stairs and elevators being located in this central tower. This is why people in the top of the towers didn’t even have a chance to escape. People on lower levels only had until the collapse began to get down the stairs because once the collapse started each floor pancaked on the one beneath it in turn crushing beyond recognition everything below it.

Everyone gathered around their TV sets for information, misinformation, and a sense of being gathered with everyone else. The terrorists definitely succeeded in confusing everyone. No one knew exactly what to do. There was no model to go from. Schools across the country didn’t know if they should dismiss or maintain the routine for the students. Did you play sporting events or not? Can you really work when you were obsessed with the news? The networks all went into constant news and commentary broadcasting. All soaps were all temporarily pulled along with other entertainment broadcasting, daytime and primetime. It must have been even worse for the New York based soap people because the anchors who were from New York kept pointing at the skyline. Most of the rest of the country saw an unbroken row of skyscrapers, but New Yorkers saw a terrible hole.

September 11th fell early on a Tuesday morning so Monday episodes had gone out, but not the rest of the week. As life settled into the new normal things slowly began to resume. All three network announced their soaps would replay the previous Monday’s episodes on the Monday following 9/11 which was September 17th and why the previous episode post had two dates, it played twice as the current episode. Then the soaps would play out the rest of the week with the episodes that were supposed to air the week before. I think that might be the only time that ever happened.

After Effects to Soaps and Guiding Light

After they resumed all soaps were effected in the short term. Violence was toned down. Storylines suddenly deemed too violent were scrapped. On Guiding Light when Josh time traveled following Reva through a painting to World War II Paris he had to hold up the Nazi who looked just like Alan with a baguette instead of a gun. Other stories already shot on various soaps on all the networks were re-edited to be toned down or disclaimers were added.

In the long term soaps were mostly unaffected. Few main characters on any of the soaps went to war, violence gradually returned to pre-9/11 levels.  (Exceptions were Phillip on Days of Our Lives who lost a leg although his resulting prosthetic leg has been totally forgotten and Brot on All My Children who was cast with an amateur actor and real life severely injured vet.) The following July’s Bauer BBQ included a special wish in honor of the fallen, but by then most of the soaps had forgotten. The new realism of terrorism which could have easily been written into stories weren’t. So in the long term I don’t think the did really effect soaps, except that some people sought them out again as comfort food in such an unstable world.

If you’re old enough, what do you remember?

I Love Lucy and Ricky Sept 10 2001 AND Sept 17 2001

September 26, 2017

Check out my latest episode guide post.

Black and white screen capture of Danny and Michelle

Danny and Michelle as Ricky and Lucy Ricardo

Mon. Sept. 10, 2001 – Carmen tells Gus that she wants out of jail and she has already signed off on her promises. Gus tells her the feds don’t trust her and she will have to tell him why she changed her mind and what she has on Danny. Carmen tells Gus she learned that Danny has given up on her and that he has chosen Michelle over his family time and again. She loves Danny but he betrayed her and his brother by turning on them in favor of an outsider. Carmen feels that Danny is no longer her son, he sold his soul to the Bauers and that is that. She is sure that baby Robbie will be different and will need her. Gus reminds her that Robbie has a mother. Carmen says Michelle is no match for her and the baby will be raised a Santos. At Company: Danny comes in dressed in his business suit and Buzz is impressed. They talk about Danny’s new job at Spaulding and Buzz congratulates him. He thinks it’s funny when Danny tells him how he got the job. Michelle comes in and they talk about actually having a normal life; Danny working 9 to 5 while Michelle raises their kids. Danny thinks it feels different having all this peace and quiet in their lives. Danny is especially happy at how things started at his new job. So far there hasn’t been much blow back from his being a Santos or having pushed his way in or replaced someone (they never say what happened to the person previously in charge of tech security, but maybe they just spun those responsibilities off another job). People have been welcoming and he had a very good day. Michelle tells Danny that Meta has Robbie so they can celebrate. They take a seat when Ray comes in. Ray tells them that he is on his way to see Carmen in jail. He is determined to save her soul. Michelle hasn’t heard this before and warns Ray that Carmen doesn’t have a soul to save so he’s wasting his time, but Ray insists he has to try. Buzz makes a comment about Michelle and Danny entering the boring couple world. He summarizes all he did to avoid that world in search of adventure, but once he faced his responsibilities and repaired his relationships with his kids and married Jenna (who is now dead) he found that everyday life was a much better than seeking outside adventure and raising kids and sharing a life with someone you love was the greatest adventure of all. Michelle sits back and daydreams about she and Danny turning into Lucy and Ricky Ricardo on I Love Lucy in black and white (see comments). It is a daydream with their only problems of ironing and cooking. Back in reality Michelle smiles and tells Danny their life will never be boring.

NOTE: Why this has and between the dates instead of the usual through is discussed in the next post.

My Comments: Buzz originally wasn’t too crazy about Danny. Buzz had been a mentor to Jesse Blue and he didn’t like an outsider stealing Jesse’s girl. He also has a legitimate beef against the Santos family in that Selena Davis (who was his first really serious relationship after his wife Jenna Bradshaw Cooper was killed) had to leave town a step ahead of the mob who gave Buzz a beating when he tried to buy her more time. However, Buzz was known to play rather fast and loose with the law himself and after his experience with Jenna he knew true love when he saw it so he came around relatively quickly to Manny’s side. He was never the serious friend Frank was, but he was a definite pal. The Cooper family had been growing increasingly closer to the Bauer family for awhile and this was a natural extension of that. Buzz also had a long term love-hate relationship with Alan Spaulding dating back to when an amnesiac Reva Shayne returned to town and both Buzz and Alan competed with each other and Josh for her affections (no bet on who won that fight). Over the years and romantic relationships between their various relatives, sometime Buzz and Alan fought each other tooth and nail and sometimes fought together. It really was as pure an example of a love/hate relationship as you’ll find anywhere. Buzz’s story about himself is accurate rather than stay in the family business Buzz ran out on his wife Nadine, who soon followed him out of town, leaving his father & uncle to raise his children, Frank and Harley.

I’m truly sorry that they didn’t take the time to play this beat of Danny settling into normal life more. There was no need to rush back into mob stories even if that was their end game. There were SO many more story beats to play. Danny is meshed into the every day life of Springfield, seeing him struggle with that and no longer being the alpha in the company would be LOADED with story, sadly this is about the only peek we get at that part of their lives. I’ll say this a lot and I’ve said it before, but there is SO much story to be played within the internal politics at Spaulding. After Danny got settled in, they could have played the struggle between Danny and Phillip more. They could even have had him involved in a plan to oust Phillip or Alan could have promoted him over Phillip. If they brought A-M back, he could have been torn between backing Alan-Danny or Phillip, both on the power side and while Phillip was his brother, Danny was married to his favorite cousin. PLENTY of great stuff. Stuff that HAD to be so much better than what they played instead.

I Love Lucy was an amazing and ground-breaking show. Lucille Ball Arnez and Desi Arnez were a real life couple, an actress who had done a little of everything in Hollywood but only caught fire with a radio show and a Cuban-American band leader at a time where being a Latino was a serious drawback in Hollywood. When the network (which was the same network for both radio and TV) wanted to bring her hit radio show to the air, My Favorite Husband, they kept a similar format to the stories, but changed the premise, their socio-economic level, and all of the supporting characters. Desi was touring with his band at the time and with Lucy tied down to a radio show there was stress in the marriage so Lucy refused to do the TV show unless they cast Desi as her husband. There was a huge fight over it, but at last Lucy got her way. In this Manny spoof they are referencing the episodes where Lucy has a domestic problem like the time her loaf of bread came out of the oven pushing her across the room or when she tried to save money by using a freezer. Desi’s real life accent was much thicker than Danny’s (since Paul Anthony Stewart wasn’t actually Hispanic) and he broke into Spanish when he got upset. They never wrote it into the script, but that’s just how he talked. They did write in Lucy gently teasing him by saying back a slightly exaggerated version of what it sounded like when he said. That’s why Danny is saying Michelle so strangely and breaking into Spanish which he hasn’t done in years. They also are calling Robbie, Little Robbie because on the show Lucy and Desi’s son was called Little Ricky to distinguish him from his father as Guiding Light did with Little Billy while he was growing up before they switched to just calling him Bill instead. The backwards hands on hips stance was also pure Desi. Although today many fabrics are designed to be wrinkle resistant back then you had to iron the cotton or linen and often starch it to keep it crisp so they had to be starched and ironed to stay flat. Burning a hole in a shirt was a familiar sitcom trope. Lucy was also known for exaggerated play crying when she was upset on the show.

Lucy and Desi were an amazing team besides the onscreen chemistry and rhythm. They were a power behind the scenes as well  her comic genius and his brilliant problem solving mind that created all sorts of things now taken for granted in television like the 3 camera sitcom and the rerun. Their production company was called Desilu. Watch for their logo on many classic TV shows including Star Trek. They were a very happy couple on screen and off. On screen Ricky was a slightly less successful band leader than Desi and Lucy was always trying to get into show business either through his show or some other way. Off screen their marriage eventually split because apparently Desi never could understand why Lucy got upset about his sleeping with other women since it didn’t have anything to do with THEIR relationship and Lucy couldn’t live with the constant betrayal. Manny’s relationship was a lot more like their on screen relationship and Carmen and Miguel were much more like their off screen relationship.

Philip Talks to Danny Before Comes to Spaulding September 6 2001

July 11, 2017

Check out my latest episode guide post.

Thurs., Sept. 6, 2001 – Philip reminds Alan that he thinks it wasn’t the best idea to give Danny Santos a job in security. Alan tells Phillip that if you want to protect something you should hire someone who can think like a thief. Alan tells Phillip he thinks Danny is going straight and he wants to give him a chance. Phillip is surprised but says he will get better acquainted with Danny. At the Bauer House: Ray comes in and sees Danny studying the security logs from the past ten years at Spaulding. Ray tells him that Carmen asks to see a priest and he is going to have to go see her. Danny tells him to be careful and never turn his back to her. Ray leaves and Danny goes back to work. Phillip comes in and sees Danny. Danny asks if he is there to see Rick and Phillip admits that he came to see him.

Phillip: “I love this place so much. It’s the one place in my life that never changes. I can always count on this place and the Bauers.”

Danny: “Ya, they’re great people.”

Phillip: “They are, they really are. Michelle’s like a little sister to me. I don’t see very much of my own.”

Danny: “No, me either. I sent Pilar to Europe when, you know when things started heating up around here. I’m hoping to get to see her soon.”

Phillip: “Is she still with Bill Lewis?”

Danny: “Ya, ya, ya, [with a chuckle] they’re running around and having a good time.”

Phillip: “That’s funny. Bill’s a good kid.”

Danny: “Ya.”

Phillip: “I feel so old every time I look at him now. And Michelle, the two of them. You know what? I can remember I sat in this room and watched the two of them to make a pinkie pact that they would marry each other someday. For a long time we thought it was going to happen.”

Danny: “What a shock I must have been for all of you.”

Phillip: “Hey, Danny she seems to love you very much. and you seem very happy together. That’s all that matters.”

Danny: “Is that why you’re here? To give me a kind of left handed blessing?”

Phillip: “Uhhhh, not about that, but I guess ya sort of. OK look. My father and I have a somewhat unconventional relationship, but in our own odd way we try to look out for each other.”

Danny: “So this is you looking out for your father?”

Phillip: “He very much wants to give you a chance to make this work outside the family business.”

Danny: “But you’re not sure.”

Phillip: “I don’t know, but I’m willing to try. That’s why I’m here. That actually is why I’m here. I am here to welcome you to Spaulding Enterprises.”

Danny: “A personal welcome.”

Phillip: “A very personal welcome because I intend to take a very personal interest in your career. I’d hate to see anything go wrong for any of us.”

He starts out with some small talk about growing up with Rick and Michelle and how he can really tells Danny loves her. Phillip says he and his father have an odd relationship so he came there to welcome Danny to Spaulding because he doesn’t want anything to go wrong for any of them.

My Comments:
This is a short scene to break out on its own, but I wanted it on its own because of the importance of the Phillip-Danny relationship. From Phillip helping Rick set up the kidnapping Michelle to the psych ward, to them locking horns over the plan to get rid of Ben Warren, to their conversation at the 2009 Bauer BBQ and the addition of Manny to the Four Musketeers their relationship raised up at critical plot points. Their relationships as scions of  important families in town. Even when they are in competition Danny is more Phillip’s equal than anyone else in town. I don’t think they played this story as often as they should, but when they did play it, it was utterly perfect as this scene is.

Danny and Food From Little Havana September 4 2001

May 23, 2017

Check out my latest episode guide post.

I know I’ve been saying this a lot lately, but this is one of my favorite Danny, non-Michelle and Robbie bits. If anyone knows Cuban food please help me out on the menu. I can pick up the arroz y pollo and the flan for dessert, but they mention at least two other dishes that not knowing Cuban food well enough I can’t quite catch.

Maria Danny Ray Tony eat Little Havana

Maria Danny Ray Tony eat Little Havana

FYI Little Havana.

Tues., Sept. 4, 2001 – At the Springfield PD: Gus tries to tell Carmen that he isn’t with the feds anymore but she tells him that she knows he is undercover. He asks her what she wants and she tells him she wants to stay out of prison. She offers him enough info on the Sandovals and Machados to put them all away but Gus tells her that he wants all three families. Carmen tells him with what she has; he will have his career made. Gus insists that he has to have at least Danny along with the others but Carmen won’t budge. She tells him that she can give him Maria, but Tony isn’t into anything and Danny is her son. She tells him that Washington won’t be happy that Gus refuses to take down the other two families just because of his vendetta against the Santos clan. Gus makes a call and acts like he is talking to Washington but in reality he called a pizza place. He ends the call and tells Carmen that Washington won’t deal without Danny as part of the package. At the Bauer House: Danny comes in with takeout of all his favorites from Little Havana. Danny is planning on a feast for one of all his Cuban foods because Meta is out, Rick is at work, and Michelle took Robbie to a “Mommy and Me” class. Rick comes in and Danny is surprised. Rick was supposed to be working a shift at Cedars, but he wasn’t up to it after Beth’s funeral so he came home early. Rick tries to sneak a taste of Danny’s meal, but Danny is protective and tells Rick he isn’t sharing. Rick leaves with a parting shot about how Danny doesn’t owe him anything he just lives in Rick’s house….rent free…..

Danny: “Great, now I HAVE to save him some.”

Danny sits down with his feast. Just as he starts Abuela comes by and asks if she can come in. Danny refuses and asks her to leave. She tells him that Michelle let her in the night before and they helped each other look for him. He won’t talk to her about it and she chastasizes him for worrying Michelle.

Danny: “Oh, NOW you’re worried about Michelle’s feelings? You should have thought about that before you tried to take that hit out on me.”

Maria (waving it away as nothing): “That order was given by Carlos.”

Danny: “Well, you went along with it.”

Maria: “I tried to rectify that mistake when I testified for you.” (Maria had helped throw her testimony to make it look like Danny was telling the truth and the state was lying even though she was testifying as part of a deal for the state.)

Maria takes a bite and Danny tells her not to eat his food. She tells him she is just picking, like they always used to. Tony arrived next and sits down at the table and he too starts picking. Danny can’t believe that they are eating his food. Danny tells them to go place their own order. Ray shows up and smells the food and Danny asks if he intends on picking as well.

Ray: “No, I’m STARVING hand me a plato.”

He gets a plate and helps himself. Maria is pleased at the impromptu family meal but Danny is irritated watching as his food disappears.

Maria: “I was wondering when was the last time we were together like this.”

Danny: “Um, let me see when you tried to kill me.”

Maria (once again waving it away as unimportant): “No, Raymond was not here that time.”

Danny isn’t physically pushing them out, but really can’t believe they are acting like everything is normal like it used to be. Ray, Tony, and Danny verbally spar and Abuela says it’s like having her three sons back. Danny sardonically points out that since they didn’t get out of the business like he’s trying to do they’re all dead. Ray tries to steer the conversation to safer territory by asking Danny about the job search. He tells them about his job at Spaulding and tells them that he is completely legit. Maria doesn’t look thrilled. Danny asks if she isn’t proud of him. Maria tells him she has always been proud of him, even when he wasn’t proud of himself. Rick comes back in and sees everyone eating. He asks Danny if he decided to share after all.

My Comments:

I know I’ve been saying this quite a bit lately, but this is one of my favorite Manny bits. I know just what Danny means sometimes to get to go to your favorite place and get all your favorites without having to share or talk with anyone is just the best. The restaurant he got take out from is called Little Havana and this isn’t the first time they’ve talked about it, but we never see it as a set. I just adore Danny’s interaction with his family here. It just is so family like. I have to say we’re know in one of all time favorite periods of Manny so I’ll keep saying how much I like stuff especially before “Mr. Big” gets here. While I enjoy the normalcy here, I also am glad Danny isn’t 100% having it. I think “Maria” threw up a line there “and that other uncle of yours.” I thought at first she said their names, but on a relisten she says something like your fathers and uncle, but I still think maybe it’s a thrown up line. It isn’t very clear and saying their names would make a lot more sense. I’m sorry that they cut off the end when Rick comes back. I don’t blame Rick for being ticked, but really Danny would have had to physically push them out. I’m sure Rick’s reaction was the tag, but I wish when he came in Danny would have gotten up and said let’s you and me go out to dinner, Ray will lock up or something like that. To show his allegiance with Rick.

Carmen’s Back Again August 30 31 2001

May 16, 2017
Michelle Danny Carmen and Robbie

Michelle Danny Carmen and Robbie

Check out my latest episode guide post.

Thurs., Aug. 30, 2001 – At the Bauer House: Danny is feeding Robbie as Michelle shows him an article in the paper where the body of Carmen’s henchman, Pedro, was found in the trunk of a car out in LA. Michelle thinks Pedro knew too much. Danny just hopes that Carmen stays away. He tells Michelle he is a bit concerned that Alan hasn’t called him about a job yet. Michelle reminds him that Beth just died and he probably has a lot on his mind. Claire comes in and tells Danny and Michelle that they can’t trust Alan. She tells them that Alan kicked her out. Danny thinks Claire shouldn’t have made appointments for Alan without his knowledge. Claire tells them she was just trying to help. She tells them that Alan is a control freak. Michelle wonders if that ruined things for Danny as well. Danny tells them he is going over to see Alan after the memorial service. Michelle says she is going as well after they get a babysitter. Claire offers to sit with Robbie but Michelle doesn’t want her to. Claire tells her that she is homeless but she doesn’t bite. She only tells Claire that she is sure she will land on her feet. At the Spaulding Mansion: Alan comes in to meet Danny and Michelle. Danny tells him that he was worried when he didn’t hear from him because he was under the impression Alan wanted to hire him. Alan tells Danny that paranoia doesn’t become him. He was impressed with his spunk and confidence the other night and if he wants the job, he is Spaulding’s new Director of Corporate Security. They thank Alan and leave. Alan picks up the phone and tells someone to handle the situation with Gus Aitoro. Back at the Bauer House: Michelle and Danny talk about how they can celebrate his new job. They kiss and head inside. When they step in the kitchen Carmen is holding the baby and says hello to both of them.

Fri., Aug. 31, 2001 – At the Bauer House: Danny and Michelle come in to find Carmen holding Robbie. She tells them she paid the sitter and told her that she was Robbie’s grandmother and the girl left. Michelle is terrified and Danny asks her to stand back. He goes to Carmen and tells her to let him have his son. Carmen holds on to Robbie and tells Danny she has already lost so much time with him and Robbie and she wants to make up for that. She tells Danny that she loves the baby already, he reminds her so much of Danny as a boy. She would never hurt him. Michelle reminds her she tried to kill Robbie when she was pregnant. Carmen tells her that was unfortunate but she has realized how precious life is now. Carmen finally hands the baby to Danny. Danny hands Michelle the baby and tells her to stay back. He picks up the phone and calls the police. Carmen tells Danny that she came back to turn herself in so he should go ahead and call the cops. Carmen tells Danny she gave him life and will always be a part of him. She just wants a chance to be part of his life and know her grandson. Just then Frank shows up and is surprised to see Carmen. Danny tells him that Carmen is there to turn herself in. Carmen tells Danny he should let go of his grudges. Danny tells Frank to get Carmen out of there before he really kills her. Carmen and Frank leave and Danny kisses Michelle and Robbie. Michelle is still shaken and doesn’t want to let the baby go. Danny tells her that this changes everything. He was looking forward to starting over with his new job at Spaulding and now Carmen comes back and ruins it. He tells Michelle that Carmen will be splashed all over the news and that means the press will be hounding them too. He also thinks that Carmen won’t stop harassing them. Michelle tells Danny that Carmen has tried to kill her twice and has framed both of them as well as tried to destroy their relationship and she has always failed. They are stronger than she is and their love has conquered everything she has tried. Michelle is sure that Carmen will not succeed whatever her latest scheme is. She tells Danny to focus on his new job because they have nothing to fear from Carmen. At the Police Station: Frank has Carmen is an interrogation room. He gives her paper and pen and tells her to get writing. She asks him what he expects her to confess to. He tells her that she can start with where she has been and how Jennifer Tarver’s body ended up in the water after she helped Carmen. Carmen wants to make a call first. She takes the phone and makes her call. She tells the person on the other end who she is and that she would like to talk to them. Frank is trying to lean on Carmen when Gus arrives. Carmen tells Frank she called Gus instead of a lawyer. Frank tells her that Gus isn’t a lawyer. Gus says he studied law but didn’t take the bar exam. Carmen says he is a PI and she wants to speak to him alone. Frank leaves and Gus tells Carmen that Frank is right; she needs a lawyer not a PI. She says she needs someone with pull and she knows he is still very much a special agent with the FBI and she wants him to cut her a deal.

My Comments:

As much as it freaks me out just as much as Manny to see Carmen holding Robbie this really is one of my favorite Carmen-Manny scenes. It came out of almost nowhere except that Carmen – much like Beetlejuice – shows up if you talk about her too much. It was a nasty shock when we were being promised a Manny celebration sex scene which are always the best. That said I just adore how Manny act as a team on this, how Danny steps forward to deal with Carmen knowing Michelle is her hot button, signaling Michelle to stay back and let him handle it, staying perfectly calm and even smiling not to upset Robbie or Carmen while she held their son. I think it shows a lot of Carmen’s mindset too. She still doesn’t like Michelle, but her actively trying to kill her is pretty much over. Carmen really does want to be part of Danny and Robbie’s lives. I think she still nutso and acting for reasons other than motherly/grandmotherly love, but this family side IS part of Carmen. I’m so sorry they went all the way to attempted murder of Michelle with Carmen. That threat just below the surface while they go head to head was a lot more entertaining in general. Sadly that was something that is never restablished in the Stablan Manny era, part of it was the plot and writing, but also because somehow Joie’s Michelle just had a better animosity chemistry with Carmen than Nancy’s Michelle ever did.

Danny trusts Carmen so little now he wants the entire room at least between Carmen and Michelle or Robbie. This is ground down a bit over time and I don’t really think it should have been, but I think this was the perfect level of concern for Manny to have over her. Then there is one of my absolute favorite bits of action having gotten Carmen on the other side of the table Danny moves everything off of the counter so she won’t have a weapon. The knife block is one thing, but he also moves the canister with things like whisks, ladles, and a spaghetti scoop. I like to picture what Carmen might have done with a spaghetti scoop. It just cracks me up. I think that Danny didn’t just call the police. I think he called Frank specifically. Sadly the Danny-Frank friendship will fall away somewhat from this point on as Manny move further into the Spaulding storyline, but will remain viable and present until the stupid Danny-Marina storyline kills it. Just one more reason that awful storyline was so, SO wrong. I’m glad Frank got credit for the Carmen bust though. Frank was an excellent community policeman, I think he was a pretty good chief, but as someone solving mysteries? It just wasn’t his strength so I’m glad he got a major collar. Then it’s great after Danny was strong when he needed to me to reveal such weakness to get Michelle’s comfort here. SO excellent.

Danny Breaks Into Alan’s Office Aug 27 28 2001

April 18, 2017

Check out my latest episode guide post.

NOTE: There are going to be comments below, but I want to take a moment and say August 28, 2001 is one of my favorite individual episodes and really hope I can find the full episode sometime. If I was going to pick a Stablan Manny episode to have restored to pristine video and preserved this would be in strong contention for the top spot, definitely in the top 4. It’s important not just for the Danny and Michelle stuff, but it helps set up Danny’s new relationship with Alan and to a lesser extent his new relationship with Phillip which I think are extremely important to the series and is frankly why I think this is one of the two times Manny is the most stable. Those relationships combined with Michelle’s relationships with them would provide more than enough story for years. What we should have gotten at this point was the return of Hope Bauer as a parallel and Alan-Michael and a revitalization of Spaulding Enterprises, sadly instead Spauldings got Olivia and, even though the story would have been much stronger if he’d really been a Santos, Gus.  😦

Mon., Aug. 27, 2001 – At the Bauer House: Michelle is trying to put together a baby swing and talking to Meta about what happened with Danny’s interview. Gus stops by with a gift for the baby. Michelle is cold to him but Meta invites him in. Gus watches as Michelle struggles to put the swing together and finally takes over and has it together in a matter of minutes. Meta is impressed that he knew how to do it without any instructions. Gus gets a page and tells them that he has to go. Michelle is glad to see him leave and asks Meta why she was so nice to Gus. Meta tells Michelle that she should always keep her enemies close so they can see what they are up to. Michelle stands in the front door wishing Danny would hurry up and come home. At the Spaulding: Alan comes in and is irritated that Claire is calling again and he won’t accept the call. The guard tells Alan he’s sorry about Ms. Winslow. I’m fairly sure he means that this is one of the times Beth was assumed dead, this time before she comes back as Loreli Hills. Danny has broken in to Alan’s office dressed all in black. A security officer comes in and Danny hides until the man leaves. He accesses Spaulding’s confidential files and downloads information onto a computer disk. He tells himself that is will teach Alan to not turn him down. Alan comes in just as the alarm in his office goes off. He and the security guard go in and find Danny at the desk with his feet propped up on the desk. Danny asks Alan what took him so long.

Tues., Aug. 28, 2001 – At Spaulding: Alan comes in and asks Danny what he is doing there. Danny tells him he is there for his interview. Danny and Alan exchange smirk as fellow titans meanwhile the poor security stands there ineffectually holding a gun until Alan tells him to go.

Alan: “You know the police must get tired of arresting you, Danny. Maybe you’re one of those who wasn’t meant to be on the outside.”

Danny: “You want me  arrested because I showed up for my interview?”

Alan: “Interview? I never agreed to an interview with you. I’m sorry if Claire misled you.”

Danny: “Yea, that was kind of crazy of her, wasn’t it?  I mean why would a nice, upstanding buisness mogul like Alan Spaulding, want a Santos working for him? He can hire anybody he wants why would he want somebody with MY background?”

Alan: “It sounds like you have an answer to the question.” Turns to the guard. “I can take it from here. You can go back to your post.”

Guard: “Are you sure?”

Alan: “I’ll call you if I need you.”

Danny: “I always heard you had guts.”

Alan: “I know the difference between a threat and an invitation.”

Danny: “Good, then so you aren’t afraid I’m going to pull out my switchblade.”

Alan: “You have thinner skin than I thought, you’re really upset I wouldn’t meet with you.”

Danny: “I was surprised. I always heard that you were a smart man.”

Alan: “And meeting with you would be a smart move, huh?” Pause, then with strength: “Get your feet off my desk and tell me why I shouldn’t have you arrested.” Pause. “I’m all ears, Mr. Santos, why don’t you tell me why you broke into my office.”

Danny: “Because I could.”

Alan: “Care to tell me how?”

Danny: “Half asleep with one hand tied behind my back.”

Alan: “Really, it was that easy?”

Danny: “Your security system is a dinosaur, Mr. Spaulding. It was nothing to get into this building, not to mention your proprietary company files.”

Alan: “You hacked into my computer?”

Danny: “Uh, I had some time to kill. Want to come have a look?” Pause as he accesses the account. “So how many millions should I transfer out of this account?….”

Alan: “You found the screen, but you can’t have access…..”

Danny: “Can’t I? Full access.”

Alan: “Huh? You want to tell me how long it took you to do this?”

Danny: “Oh, under an hour.”

Alan: “How long would it take you to make sure this could never be done again?”

Danny: “You know what? I’m out of free advice for today.” Danny straightens Alan’s pocket square as he passes by on his way towards the door.

Alan: “What do you want?”

Danny: “You know the answer to that, I want a job. And if you’re half as smart as people say you are you’ll hire me.” Pause. “You’d be giving someone an opportunity to turn their life around. I want to give my wife and my son the kind of life that they deserve, one that doesn’t involve guns or bloodshed. I don’t want any son of mine to see what I…”

And right here, right here is when I think Alan snapped into it that this was in many ways himself as a young man when he married Hope. This standing right before him was the second chance that he and Hope didn’t get.

Alan: “You were quite young when your father died, weren’t you?”

Danny: “You have sons didn’t you want them to have everything you didn’t have growing up?”

Alan: “I was very privileged life…. in some ways.”

Danny: “You were lucky. I had to work very hard, even when I was part of my family’s business. I made my own way and I did some things that I’m not too proud of, but maybe you can understand that too?”

Alan: “Hmmm”

Danny: “I will work very hard for you. All I’m asking for is a chance, a chance for me and for the people that I love.”

At the Bauer House: Michelle is getting worried that Danny hasn’t shown up yet. She asks Meta to watch Robbie and starts to head out to search for Danny. When she gets to the door she drops her keys and is startled when Maria Santos approaches thinking she might be Carmen for a second. Maria asks to talk to Danny and Michelle tells her that he isn’t there. They are both worried that Carmen is out there somewhere and Maria tells her that with Carmen out there they need to stick together. At least Abuela doesn’t want Danny killed right now and had made some attempt to make amends for attacking them in her own way. Michelle agrees and they head off together to Infierno to see if anyone has seen Danny. When they don’t find him there Tony sends Romeo back to the Bauer House with Michelle to make sure she gets there OK. Michelle comes in with Romeo who checks the house out and tells her that all is clear. He asks if she wants him to stick around but she tells him she will be okay. Romeo leaves.

Phillip arrives at Alan’s office and is surprised to see Danny there. And Alan realizes Danny could also could be a very useful goad.

Danny: “Hey, Phillip.”

Phillip: “I’m sorry, security didn’t mention there was anybody in here.”

Alan: “Come on in. They wouldn’t mention it because Danny broke into our office.” He smiles.

Phillip: “Uhhhh huh.”

Alan: “Yes, he got past our security system.”

Phillip: “OK. Well, that’s one way to get a meeting.”

Danny: “It was the only way.”

Alan: “He was here applying for a job and I want to thank you very much for stopping in. I will DEFINITELY be in touch with you.”

Danny: “Thank-you…..Phillip.”

Phillip to Danny: “Tell Michelle I said hey.”

Phillip to Alan: “Let me make sure I understand this. Danny broke into your office looking like a catburgler and you are considering offering him a job.”

Alan: “I might do it. You want to know why?”

Phillip: “No, not really.”

Alan: “Because Danny Santos is a man of action. He cares very deeply about the people he loves. HE’S NOT going to wait until it’s too late like YOU did with Beth.”

Michelle wonders where Meta and the baby are and she is starting to get paranoid when someone rattles the doorknob. She grabs a poker and goes to the door just as Danny comes in. Danny asks if she is okay and hugs her. He tells her that he thinks he may have gotten a job at Spaulding and they should keep their fingers crossed.

Danny: “I took a chance and went to have a meeting with Alan Spaulding. I think I proved to him that he needs me, so…”

Michelle: “So, so. What do you mean?”

Danny: “I mean a job. I hope.”

Michelle: “Are you serious?”

Danny: “I hope. I hope.”

Michelle: “We’ll keep our fingers crossed.”

Danny: “Michelle, I’m sorry I scared you. I’m sorry. I’m sorry I left before dinner. Let me make it up to you.”

Michelle: “How?”

Danny: “I called Meta on the way home and she took Robbie over to her friend Adrian’s for the evening and Rick’s working an extra shift at the hospital…”

Michelle: “You mean…”

Danny: “We have the whole house to ourselves.”

Their kisses and touches intensify as they leave no doubt they won’t make it to the bedroom….They may not make it to the couch.

My Comments:

Now, WHAT is that? Why does Gus feel entitled to just wander on to Bauer property on a regular basis. He KNOWS he’s not welcome. He KNOWS that as such anything he did see would be unadmissible in court and honestly his mere connection with the case would fatally taint it in the eyes of any jury. So WHAT is he doing? Even if he just wants to annoy Danny, he couldn’t do that some place else? I can almost see it when Harley is around since he’s going after her romantically, but there is just NO sense in him always dropping by. I hate him SO much. Meta says keep your enemies close. I know lots of people see Aunt Meta as more of Nancy Hughes type of character during this run on the series, but honestly there’s a lot of steel, quick wit, life experience, and watchfulness there. If you’re on her bad side it isn’t wise to turn your back on her or assume as a sweet old lady she’s not really a threat for even a minute.

Notice right after Danny says “what do you have for me, Mr. Spaulding” he wipes his cheek and you see his wedding ring. He’s trying to sneak in all in black and leaves a shiny, large gold ring on his finger. They don’t touch on it as often after the first Stablan Manny marriage, but we continue to see the importance of their wedding rings to them, more so than other soap couples.

See how they did that? How they implied Meta and Robbie were there without paying for each of them. This is SUCH a great episode that I went through and did a big bunch of transcription. It’s a wonderful Danny being boss set up and proves him to be an equal to Alan. Then you set up the Danny-Alan relationship beautifully and starts the set up of the new level of Danny-Phillip where Danny is both geniune competition and a goad. They had such an amazing chance here to revitalize Spaulding Enterprises and we don’t know that they’re going to blow it yet. Then we got a beautiful Manny loving scene.

Josh is a Jerk at Danny’s Interview Aug 24 2001

April 4, 2017

Check out my latest episode guide post.

NOTE: I would like to point out that when Josh was crazed because he thought Reva was in danger Danny risked his own life, let Michelle risk hers, and invested capital several times when Josh asked. Since then he has had Josh’s back about Marony as far as keeping Marah safe and has been involved with helping getting both Reva and Marah out of trouble more than once. AND  JOSH IS A JERK! Specifically:

“Fifth, Josh was a jerk to Danny. Josh and Danny forged a friendship based on their mutual experience of having their wives taken away from them, early on in the Manny marriage. They helped each other out several times, but when Danny is cleared of the murder charges and goes to Josh for job, Josh turns on the Jerk Juice. He could at least politely turn him down or ask for time to think about it, instead he basically says, “like I would trust you with my money.” Um, Josh you had trusted him with your and Reva’s lives already, which he helped save, but money is an issue? Class act there, Josh. This creates a distance between the two men that is never really overcome although they do work together on future business deals and remain friendly, if not friends.”

Fri., Aug. 24, 2001 – At the Bauer House: Michelle has put Robbie down for his nap and is trying to tip toe away. Robbie isn’t going to fall for that and starts squalling for his bottle. [OK, this can’t wait for the comments. WHAT is the deal with the sound effect that is playing Robbie today. It’s like they played the baby monitor sound on a PA system instead of the kids right there sound.] Michelle tells Rick about the interview Claire set up for Danny. They both think Claire had good intentions but it still turned out badly. Danny comes downstairs dressed to go to Lewis. He tells Michelle he is going to propose his services to them. After Danny leaves, Rick tells Michelle that everything will be fine. He is sure that people will give Danny a chance now that he has been exonerated. Rick leaves after getting an urgent page from Lillian. Meanwhile Danny meets with Josh who is happy things are going well for Danny until it gets to Danny’s international security system proposal. Josh: “You have a what?” Josh is surprised and reminds Danny that he is a Santos and says that he wouldn’t feel comfortable with all his finances and security going through him.  Josh shoots him down. Danny comes back in  the Bauer house and is edgy. He tells Michelle what happened will Josh and he is sure no one will want his services because of his last name. Michelle tells Danny that things will calm down and people will forget about the trial. Danny admits they are fine for money right now, but he wonders how he will provide hope and a future for Michelle and Robbie. She gives him a pep talk and he tells her she is right and he will try again somewhere else. Michelle: “Maybe they [opportunities] aren’t just with people we know, branch out, widen the circle.” He is trying to be optimistic for Michelle and starts working on a resume. He is having a tough time and thinks he is kidding himself.

We pick up in the middle of the highlight clip (the other one starts in the right place, but the quality is a little better on this one).

My Comments:
I don’t enjoy this part of the storyline as a whole. I think they rushed it too much. I hate that Josh turns on his one of his best friends [Danny has better friends, but I don’t think Josh has many]. I mean I have never liked Josh, but Josh likes to present himself as a stand up guy, here’s his chance and BAM! he blows it. Plus I don’t like Danny feeling bad about himself. He doesn’t deserve it. That said it is perfectly obvious why Danny would assume he could start at the top and equally obvious that it wouldn’t happen that easily. Michelle is right, Danny should expand his search beyond the two businesses run by people he knows. Danny has a definite alpha personality and not being in control of his life is very hard for him. Then one of the best Danny parts ever comes next.

Danny’s Meeting with Alan is a Bust Aug 22 2001

March 28, 2017

Check out my latest episode guide post.

I just want to say again that I don’t get why this whole part of the story is played on fast forward. Not only couldn’t Claire wait until Alan gets back to even ask him, Danny has done virtually NOTHING to find a job other than expect someone will give him one. It’s WAY too early to be discouraged. I mean I know usually on soaps someone just hands you a job, but he hasn’t even given them a chance to do it yet.

Wed., Aug. 22, 2001 – At the Bauer House: Danny is dressed in a nice suit for his interview at Spaulding. Michelle thinks Alan will hire Danny on the spot. Rick thinks it is great that Danny is striking out into the legit world. Danny goes to Towers for his meeting. Gus comes in and sees Danny. Gus asks Danny what is he is dressed as, Danny tells him that he is dressed as a success, the complete opposite of Gus. Danny heads over to Tobias. Gus meets with a woman who slips him his FBI badge he left in DC. He tells her that no one in Springfield knows he is really still FBI and very much on the case. The woman tells him he can’t play the private investigator forever and get away with it. Gus tells her that he could play Santa Claus in this town and the people would buy it. Gus tells the woman that Carmen Santos is alive and he will take her down along with all the other Santoses. Gus tells her that he blew the first case but now he can bring all the mob families in Springfield down at once. Danny is talking to Tobias about his qualifications when Alan calls. Tobias tells Alan that he is with Danny and things are going well. Danny steps away and  goes to the bar to see Michelle and Claire while Alan tells Tobias that the meeting is unauthorized. When Danny returns to Tobias, the man is mean to him and tells him that he is trying to scam him just as any Santos would. He leaves and Danny glares at Claire. He goes over to Michelle and Claire and tells Michelle that Claire set him up. Now he will be bad mouthed to every legit business in town. Michelle asks Claire why she would lie to them. Claire thought it would work out.

[Ed. Note: I’m not sure this could still be part of the 22nd or it could be on to the 23rd. I think it’s probably the 22nd] Danny takes Michelle to Infierno. He watches Tony giving orders and tells Michelle that he misses be the one running things. It’s HIS club. He built it up.

My Comments:
I think the Bauers should get a restraining order against Gus. Change passwords every month? I love you Danny, but I think the writers needed a bit more research on what this job would do. I still don’t think what Claire actually thought was going to happen here and it’s unfortunate because Danny hadn’t asked for any of this. I understand that this guy was caught out to, but for someone who is used to working with Spaulding, this attitude, I hope Danny gets him fired later. This isn’t a favorite scene because I don’t like things going wrong for Danny and that Michelle doesn’t already know this, but I do love that Danny tells her and that the show takes time to SHOW him telling her. I get that Danny feels entitled, but really he hasn’t actually spoken to a head hunter yet, filled out an application, or created an updated resume. It’s a bit early to be giving up.

Celebration and Chair Slide Aug 21 2001

January 24, 2017

Check out my latest episode guide post.

chair-slide

Tues., Aug. 21, 2001 – At the Bauer House: Everyone is celebrating Danny’s release, drinking champagne and toasting each other.

Danny: “Well, Ross, no offense you did a great job, but I think the real hero of my trial is Michelle. So to my amazing wife if not for your incredible stubborness….and determination I wouldn’t be here right now. I love you.”

Frank tells them that they still have to protect Michelle until Carmen is caught. Claire demands the police keep eyes on Manny until Carmen is caught, but Frank says he doesn’t have the budget for it. Danny pulls Frank to the side and asks him why he is acting angry towards him. Frank is upset that he punched him and escaped. Danny tells him he had to get to Michelle and he’d only decked him to cover him with his higher ups. Frank tells him if he wants to go straight he should concentrate on “following the law, not bending it.” Frank punches Danny and Tony comes in ready to hurt him. Danny laughs and tells Tony is it alright and Frank tells him they are even. Catalina tells Tony that the system works and she hopes he sees that. (As much as I dislike Catalina – calling her Cat is cute.) Tony tells her Michelle and Blake got Danny off, not the system. Just then Gus pokes his head in to greet the family. Gus comes in and tells everyone that there are so many cops on their side, it isn’t any wonder that Danny beat the rap. Tony doesn’t take Gus’s snide comments very well.

Danny: “Tony, Tony. It’s OK EX-Agent Aitoro is just yanking your chain. He knows full well that the videotape was real that Carmen is alive. He just can’t admit that because it means he lost.”

Michelle: “I think you may have to say that a little LOUDER because I think EX-Agent Aitoro has a problem hearing.”

Danny: “Oh, he heard me. Everyone in this room knows he lost, so please, please stay. Have a little champagne. Nothing will make this celebration sweeter than having you witness our happiness. A toast to EX-Agent Gus Aitoro I’m a free man today because of your blind vengance and your total incompetence. By all means keep up the good work.”

Gus leaves and everyone claps. Manny are estastic. Outside, Gus makes a call. Meanwhile, Blake tells Ross how brilliant he was. Ross tells Blake that he has lost his edge and that he feels he is growing old. He tells Blake that she, Danny and Michelle won the case, not him. Claire congratulates Michelle and Danny but tells Michelle how nuts she was to go after Carmen. Michelle tells Claire that she wouldn’t have had to if she hadn’t helped the prosecution. Danny tells Michelle how Claire helped him locate her at the airport. Claire tells her that she had to tell him to protect her. Michelle thinks they are very alike when it comes to protecting those they love. Claire offers to go ahead and set up that meeting with him and Alan. Danny is reluctant but Michelle thinks he can do a lot of things for Spaulding. Claire goes to call Alan. Michelle tells Danny she thinks it is a good thing and may turn into something. Claire calls and asks his assistant Sally to put her through to Alan. Sally tells Claire that Alan doesn’t have her on the list of people he wants to talk to. Claire is ticked. She goes back to Danny and Michelle and tells them that everything is fine and Danny has an interview first thing in the morning. Claire walks away and calls the Spaulding head of security. Everyone has FINALLY left leaving Michelle and Danny alone. Danny takes Michelle in his arms, spooning her and nibbling on her ear, neck, and shoulder. Michelle: “It’s over and you are free and we are going to start a whole new life together!” Danny is worried about Tony and where his head is. Michelle just wants to focus on the positive and getting on with their lives.

Cue couple theme song – Michelle sits down on Danny on the chair.

Danny: “I’m so lucky to have you. You stuck by me, worked so hard and saved my neck.”

Michelle: “You did the same for me, although I do have ONE request.”

Danny: “What?””

Michelle: “I don’t ever, EVER set foot on those docks again.”

Danny: “You’re telling me. Thank God you’re OK. Thank God you’re OK.”

Michelle: “Hey! What’s going on? You’re supposed to be happy there.”

Danny: “I am. I am. I just didn’t think this day would ever come.”

Michelle: “OH I did.”

Danny: “How do you do that? You always keep the faith, all the time.”

Michelle: “It’s, uh, it’s called love.”

Danny: “Do you know how much I love you? How much I love our little boy? How just the idea of being apart from you maybe forever was…..”

Michelle: “Don’t!”

Danny: “I almost lost you.”

Michelle: “Danny…”

Danny: “I almost lost Robbie.”

Michelle: “You’re never going to lose us, not now, not ever.”

Danny: “It’s so hard to believe that. We’ve just been living like this for so long. Always waiting for us to be able to live our lives.”

Michelle: “And it’s finally happened. It HAS happened and I just want to celebrate with you, you know.”

Michelle tells Danny it’s too bad everyone else is gone so…

Michelle: “We have the whole house to ourselves, ALL afternoon. What are we going to do?”

Danny: “What if I take you upstairs and show you how much I love you?”

Michelle slides over on top of Danny up his chest and between his legs….the chair slide.

My Comments: Now I love Buzz and Frank I truly do, but honestly it gets a little ridiculous how they start taking over all the Bauer parties. Honestly I’d much rather have had Meta there and Robbie than Frank. And we have to have Greek music when a Cuban somba, an Irish jig, or a German polka would be more fitting for the family that actually lives in the house. Nice line unnaturally put there for real life, but deftly explains why neither Meta nor Robbie are at the party before anybody asks. It’s kind of nice they did include Claire. But GOOD GRIEF do we have to have Catalina contaminating every single storyline group shot? Whether it’s Santos, Bauer, Lewis, or even Cooper – BAM! – there she is. Loving Claire’s beautiful pantsuit. I realize it must be hard on Frank to be Danny’s friend – I mean honestly he is always a better friend to Danny than Danny is to him – but in this case if Danny had listened to Frank Michelle would have been dead no ifs ands or buts so take a chill pill. That said I think Danny owed Frank that punch, but he COULD have waited until after the party. I mean WHAT is it with Gus and just constantly tresspassing on the Bauers? They don’t like him and for good reason. I can get him baiting them in public and MAYBE even if he knocked first or even walked in a standing open door, but he’s always entering without the owner’s position. Claire keeps pushing Danny to set up a meeting with Alan. I know how she feels I’ve pushed someone to let me do something and then realized I couldn’t do it when they finally said OK.

I don’t understand though WHY did they push it quite this quick. They could have taken a week or so off the front burner. Why did Claire tell Danny she actually had an appointment immediately when she didn’t? She couldn’t say next week?

Danny Is Cleared Aug 20 2001

December 16, 2016

Check out my latest episode guide post.

danny-guilty-verdict

Mon., Aug. 20, 2001 – While we were with Danny, Michelle, and Carmen on the docks, with no witnesses to testify (and honestly Ross is much better at tap dancing than this) the Judge called for closing arguments and sent the jury to deliberate. The jury foreman is ready to read the verdict. Michelle, Danny, and Frank Cooper comes bursting into the courtroom to interrupt proceedings. Danny tells the Judge that Carmen is alive and they can prove it. Doris is angry and tells the Judge that they should go ahead with the verdict. Frank slips into the benches the back of the room by Rick, but he didn’t actually see Carmen so can’t testify. Rick – who instantly believes Michelle and Danny doesn’t that make your heart feel good – wants to know how WE are going to prove it. Michelle talks to Ross and he asks the Judge to recall Michelle to the stand. Doris tells them that the verdict is in the foreman’s hand. The foreman looks down to the paper that has a Guilty verdict on it. The Judge rules that he will hear the evidence. Ross calls Michelle to the stand and Michelle tells her story of Carmen kidnapping her. Michelle tells the court that Carmen’s camera is at the bottom of the lake where Danny threw it to save Michelle’s life. Doris and Gus are laughing at the testimony and telling the Judge Michelle is making this up. Michelle pulls another camera from her purse and tells the court that when she learned where Carmen was she decided to go there prepared. She had a tape going so she can prove that Carmen is alive. Doris objects and the Judge calls the attorneys into chambers. Michelle hugs Danny and hopes the camera has more than just feet on it since it was hidden in her purse. The Judge comes back and tells everyone that they will see the tape with the jury present. The Jury comes back in and they start the video. You can see a pair of stilettos on the screen and nothing else and Doris demands the tape be stopped, saying it doesn’t prove anything. The Judge agrees but Ross asks him to bear with them and let the tape play to the end. The bailiff adds it’s a short tape so there should only be a few minutes left. The Judge decides to let it continue and the bailiff hits play again. Carmen comes on the screen and Doris objects saying it could be from an old home movie. Then the tape has Carmen holding the newspaper about Danny being arrested. It was today’s issue of the Springfield Journal. Ross tells the judge that proves Carmen is alive on this very day and he wants the case against his client dropped. Doris is ticked but the Judge dismisses the case. Judge: “In all my years as a judge I’ve never ever seen anything quite like this. Mr. Santos please rise. Daniel Santos the charges against you are dismissed. You are free to go!” Danny hugs Michelle tight and doesn’t let go.

My comments: Huzzah Rick is finally there at the trial. For someone who couldn’t get the jury deliberation delayed Ross has found his feet again. He does more amazing lawyering here. Isn’t that great how Rick is so totally on board with Manny and especially feels that he and Danny are on the same team. How are WE going to prove it Rick says and he believed them without a thought. I just love Rick so much when he’s like this. Ross too he’s so great in this. Honestly though it wouldn’t dissolve the camera to throw it in the lake. It wouldn’t have been good for it, but I think they could have thrown enough money in it to drag and find the camera? I think the camera would be toast, but the tape might be partially salvageable and they don’t need much. I just love, love, love how Manny touch each other instinctively reach out to each other and hold on in trouble or happiness. This disruption of legal procedure is odd, but the part I can’t believe is that they’d start the tape and not watch it all through, maybe not in front of the jury, but the Judge. Isn’t Michelle crawling over the railing to get to Danny top of the line amazing?
