Spotting Barbara Crampton (Mindy Lewis #3, the one that was way too old) in the 2015 SYFY movie We Are Still Here made a viewer write into the Soap Opera Digest. Mindy is the Sampson Girl March 10 1986

September 8, 2016

We have a short run of episodes available after the Bert Bauer Memorial Service. This should be the following Monday. Happily these are mostly important to Michelle’s history. This one is the exception. However, it continues the day of the memorial service and we learn a lot about where Rick’s life is right now just as he’s getting close to becoming a doctor. We get some great stuff today of seeing Mindy Lewis as the Sampson Girl including Dick Cavett’s second appearance on the show. If you wonder what happened to Kurt and Mindy after having the most beautiful soap wedding ever. Here you go — and see I TOLD you about their obsession with this house. There is a lot of Jessie and Simon today for people who enjoy them. In the next few episodes we’ll see the fight for custody of Michelle start to move to center stage. I’m sorry they don’t keep going longer, but really this is a nice little run.

March 10 1986

Mindy on Dick Cavett

Mindy on Dick Cavett

Mindy as the Sampson Girl is being interviewed by Dick Cavett (a real TV interview star). Cavett served as Master of Ceremonies for the  Sampson Girl Contest. Beth traveled with Mindy to help her. Jackson also came as part of the series of show biz stories they ran through back then. Back when talk shows were as big as judge shows are now and actually featured interesting topics and conversations, Dick Cavett was one of the best.

Simon and Jessie are still in jail. Ironically Simon was a criminal, but IS innocent this time. A count of the cash register shows it $50 short which backs Simon’s story.

Rick shows up with his study buddy friend Amber and Roxie tries to get him to tell her about what went on with Amber, but he covers not wanting her to know the part about his drug.

Not sure who these day players are taking screen time with a lame pick-up.  There are a lot of slight line gaffes today. Kurt implies both that he’s going to call the police and go down there.

Simon continues to try to protect Jessie and work Alexandra.

Mindy says she spent a lot of time on H.B.’s ranch growing  up and learned to “ride and shoot with the best of them.” Mindy: “Springfield is part big city and part small town.”

Jackson intercepts Kurt’s message. Jackson is currently working on breaking up Mindy and Kurt. I don’t approve of why he’s doing it, but I approve of the aim.

When Roxie had amnesia she ended up in Alaska which is what brought Kurt to town in the first place. Reva has forgiven Hawk for frequently and finally abandoning them as children. Roxie has taken a firmer stance as the younger sibling remembering less of the father and more of the hurt. Hawk does get a job there and works at Company for the next few years.

Mindy and Dick get publicity shots. Dick again encourages Mindy to be a guest again soon. Calla (Jessie’s mother, Lillian’s sister) shows up and is furious. Her whole plan for coming to town was to marry Jessie off to someone rich and socially connected (hopefully Phillip Spaulding) as Calla’s own ticket to wealth and prominence. Simon pushes the con by telling Alex she has to accept him right now or he’s leaving town.

Somehow Fletcher and Reva who is working for the newspaper have become best friends. Reva’s sick stranger violently refuses medical aid.

Rick’s “friend” takes the torn pieces of the illegal amphetamines (speed) prescription from Rick’s table and says to himself he’ll give them to Claire for a reward. They’ll be ammunition for the custody case for Michelle.

This was during the time when the continued one of the scenes under the credits. It’s my favorite credit style because it really makes you feel like life goes on in Springfield when the cameras aren’t rolling. They did it on As the World Turns also.

Memorial Service for Bert Bauer

August 29, 2016

This episode originally appeared March 7, 1986.

The main story is the Memorial Service for Bert Bauer. This earlier tribute I think was from the time Charita Bauer who portrayed her died about a year earlier than her death on screen.

The main storyline in this episode is Bert’s funeral, but this is a full episode so other things are going on in this same episode.

Some watchers might be wondering , who are Jessie Matthews and Simon Hall? They disappeared so completely after they left the show without few connections and no later mentions but this is who they are: https://glmanny.wordpress.com/2012/04/09/faq-who-are-simon-and-jesse/

The short version of what you see today is that Simon and India had previously been involved they came to town with a plan to con Alex into thinking he was her half-brother and get him into the Spaulding name and inheritance. Actually he was the son of her ex-husband, Lujack’s father. However, either fortunately or unfortunately for Simon, it turns out with Alex and Jessie around he’s not quite the criminal shark he thought he was.

We open with Maeve and Kyle who have made the best of their for the sake of the child marriage and seem happy. Maeve has been ordered to bed rest because of her pregnancy with the future Ben Reade. India von Halkein is good friends with Maeve and shows up to visit. I absolutely adore Maeve and Kyle’s bedroom furniture set. I would totally buy one of those. India is divorcing Phillip which is a real shame since she is the only other woman besides Beth that I believe he could have really been happy with. India has been involved with Simon and thought he would marry her. Basically though Simon viewed her as more of a partner in crime with benefits and is far more interested in a familial relationship with Alexandra Spaulding and a romantic relationship with Jessie Matthews. This leaves India out in the cold.

Kurt Corday who is running Company has left an untrained Jessie Matthews in charge of Company all on her own when a bus shows up. (This happens in real life too, buses without warning are a real pain.)

Before Bert’s funeral, check out that of Papa Bauer’s Michelle’s great-grandfather’s from about 10 years before.

Bert and Rick

Bert and Rick

Bert’s Memorial Service is held in the Bauer House living room and seems to involve all the major people in town, appropriately dressed in mourning. On the show Bert was kept alive for a little while after Charita Bauer (her actress) died. She was out of town and lived long enough for Ed to bring her namesake Berta Michelle Bauer and for her to hold her. She passed on off screen shortly thereafter. It’s a fairly informal gathering after the actual formal service which was held off screen. They are sitting around eating and drinking with people feeling they are helping.

Attendees include: Henry Chamberlain, H.B. Lewis, Claire Ramsey, Ross Marler, Vanessa Chamberlain, Maureen Reardon Bauer, Roxie Shayne, Reva Shayne, Fletcher Reade, Lillian Raine, hospital guy I can’t remember his name, Warren Andrews, Ed Bauer, Rick Bauer, Billy Lewis, Phillip Spaulding, Kurt Corday, and a friend of Rick’s Amber.

This restored clip from CBS features the taking hands and then the montage with different music. It doesn’t seem to have gotten as much restoration as some of their other clips and isn’t as clear. Sadly it doesn’t include the news story close up or we might have been able to read it.

Rick always had a very special relationship with Bert. His desire to create a similar relationship with a child of his own will be the driving force of the character for the next two decades. He was devastated by Bert’s death.

I think the laughter of the others is realistic though. You remember both the good and the bad at a funeral. Actually Ed’s story about the breakfast he and Mike made is exactly how I like my French Toast. Everyone shares memories of Bert. My favorite is Vanessa saying how Bert was the first woman she’d met who could make the Lewis men cower.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjKLCQcxUNg (Part 1)

We go back to Company where Jessie is overwhelmed. Simon helps by doing some magic tricks to keep the crowd from being restless while they waited for Jessie to get their orders. Two unrelated people show up and rob the cash register.

India complains about all of the time Simon is spending with Alex instead of her. Hawk arrives and as much as he wants he can’t dismiss him because of Hawk’s knowledge of his dealings and his being true love Reva’s father.

They did their frequent trick of announcing Mike had to leave after church service to explain why they didn’t pay to have him come back.

Ed: “You know a child has to have security, a feeling of security. It has to have absolute love if it’s going to have confidence in itself when it grows up and I want to give Michelle that kind of childhood. I want her to be part of a strong loving family and I don’t know for the life of me how she’ll get that with Claire.”

Ross is apparently back to dating Calla Matthews, Jessie’s mother. I’m sorry about that. I never really liked them together.

Reva had discovered a strange man in the woods. He’s suffering from a fever, but she’s been taking care of him on her own and hasn’t told anyone.

Fletcher had already dumped Claire which explains their snarky exchange.

Rick talks about his relationship with Bert and how special it was. Then he talks about his frustration with this drug addiction.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUSELyeiFjs (Part 2)

Hawk reminds Kyle of what he knows (that Kyle still loves Reva and secretly bought her Reva Bend – neither Reva nor Maeve know) and threatens to tell if Kyle doesn’t pay more blackmail. Kyle calls his bluff, but India hears his threat that eventually both Reva and Maeve will learn about what he’s done and how he feels. India overhears.

The Reardons excuse for not coming is that Bea had to stay out east because Annabelle and Tony are about to have a baby. Sorry they didn’t pay for them to come back, but So glad about the baby news. I love Tony and Annabelle and the news they are having a baby almost makes up for Tony, Annabelle, and Bea not being at the funeral as they should be. I’m so sorry you can’t read the article about Bert. I really can’t believe they didn’t read it out loud. What was the point of just showing a copy not clear and not big enough to read it on screen?

At this time Roxie was dating Rick, but it was a friend he confided in about his drug abuse not Roxie. So she’s feeling cut out and not understanding why. Unfortunately she has an inferiority complex so anything like this sets her off to acting out. The contest Roxie is talking about is the Sampson Girl contest Mindy Lewis won instead.

Rick finds inspiration in wanting Bert to be proud of him to go cold turkey on his pill addiction. Roxie doesn’t know either about the addiction or his decision to go off the drugs.

Fed up with Claire and her treatment of Michelle, Ed and Maureen announce that they are going for full custody and Fletcher tells Claire she should let them have it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5U6_Ht_c4aE (Part 3)

The final part is a montage of short scene clips and screen captures through the years.

Mindy and Kurt’s Reception

June 24, 2016

Kurt Corday and Mindy Lewis Corday’s Wedding Reception Begins

Mindy Wedding with Kurt

Mindy Wedding with Kurt

The reception is being held at the Lakeland Country Club even though the entrance hasn’t yet been remodeled with the stairs turning a corner. David Preston is at Mindy and Kurt’s reception. His organization doesn’t have Jackson Fremont or Beth Raines yet, but are looking for them. Calla starts introducing herself and Jessie to everyone. Maureen shows up and announces Michelle’s birth. 🙂 Mindy and Kurt have their first dance and Kurt warns Mindy that they’ll be back to real life soon which will involve a lower standard of living for her and a lot of work. (See he can’t even let her enjoy the one day, do you wonder why I can’t stand this guy?)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRMxCMQgyqE (Part 9)

Kyle fired David Preston. Calla Matthews shows she remembers more than about Alexandra’s senior year when she saw her at Cranberry Ball. Calla is such a social climber. They have the father daughter dance and Kurt dances with Vanessa since he doesn’t have any family. Ross is President of Spaulding right now and Phillip is married to India. Does anybody else find it strange that a married Phillip would be practically panting after Beth’s juvenile cousin?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgEl5KPWvM8 (Part 10)

Kyle tell David that he is fired because Kyle found out David was behind group trying to take over Sampson Industries. David tries to cover until Kyle pushes him over. (I don’t remember, but after those 2 scenes I don’t think David is going to be long for this world.) Ross apparently dated Calla a long time ago, they become an item again. (I never liked her either. Ross deserved better.) Miss Sally (always a pretty sharp knife in the drawer) realizes Mauve is probably pregnant.

https://youtu.be/cBvEkQwrs_w (Part 11)

David presents Mindy and Kurt with the master copy of Lujack’s music video as a wedding present. Billy had been hypnotized to kill Kyle. That buttony thing was his cue. And THAT my friends is how well Kurt understands Mindy. He truly thinks she’s being shy. Mindy was never shy in her life. If anyone happens to be looking for the Lujack music video with the clocks, it starts at roughly 4:30 into this clip.

https://youtu.be/tG53Od4CxNM (Part 12)

This must be the start of a new day since they are repeating the set up. Phillip, Rick, and Roxie went out to the car to decorate it with tin cans and shaving cream. They hear a banging and let Suzette out of the trunk of a car and she runs into the country club to find David. Lujack’s video was part of the sensitization too. Love Billy is fighting his programming. Frankly I just love Billy.

https://youtu.be/Fh7PHVWVuOg (Part 13)

Multiple people show up to stop it, but Billy shoots — David Preston. I totally don’t remember that, but that was totally amazing! This hypnotized killer bit was popular in 80s TV shows and movies. Preston comes back too enough to aim at Kyle and Maeve is shot. Suzette finds the gun and picks it up. Good Lord was he wearing a bullet pack or something? How is that guy hit that badly in the chest and just keeps on firing? Preston just seems to with it for a dying guy. He’s just terrible. The one behind it was Largo who is the head of infinity. David claims to have loved Kyle and Kyle doesn’t understand and then he finally drops.

https://youtu.be/5mQHS_j4w_k (Part 14)

Maeve’s bullet is next to her spine so she can’t be moved. Mindy is upset. Lujack gives the detective information that makes it seem like Billy is part of conspiracy.

Mindy and Kurt’s Wedding

June 23, 2016

Mindy and Kurt were not a great couple. If you ask me, Kurt treated Mindy like dirt, always ignoring and belittling things Mindy thought were important while holding her to a strict standard of what he thought was important. I really couldn’t stand Kurt with either Mindy or her rival for his “affections” Roxie. I actually was glad when he was killed as part of an evil cartel dealing with Lewis Oil in Venezela.

Kurt from Mindy wedding

Kurt from Mindy wedding

Flashback to 1985

That said, I’d have to say that while not the best soap wedding ever, Mindy and Kurt’s was the most beautiful. There are different formulas for a good soap wedding. One of those is the princess fairytale wedding. Soaps have tried it over and over, sometimes even creating real royalty for the event. None of them ever touched this one. It’s gorgeous and perfect first beat to last. Look for yourself and enjoy.

It’s important to point out that while Kurt was penniless and Mindy was an princess, they not only had a relationship they had an entire fantasy built around this plot of land they bought. It made sense to some extent for Kurt, but I didn’t think Mindy ever cared beans about the house. Anyway they had this tediously elaborate plan about getting the land and paying for it and building a house on it. It was really kind of like they only existed as a couple in terms of this house and when Mindy’s justifiable mad fit lead to it being burned to the ground they were kind of done. Kurt took a job with Lewis Oil to try to rebuild, but died soon after.

Best bit of this wedding though, where are Ed and Maureen and Claire? Michelle is being born!

Mindy Wedding with Kurt

Mindy Wedding with Kurt

Before the ceremony they discover that Mindy and a sound alike name bride Mandy Lewiston were both booked at the church at the same time. Phillip agrees to let Mindy use the Spaulding retreat which is nearby for her wedding. It includes establishing shots via flyover the retreat. Beth and Lujack are supposed to be part of the wedding party, but call at the last minute to say they can’t be there. As far as I can make out from what I can find supposedly this Spaulding Retreat place is near to Springfield. Vanessa had been there before, but I don’t think we ever hear about it again.

Everyone is brought to the ceremony in creative ways. Henry and Bea are in a bicycle rickshaw. A group of people are dancing. Maeve and Fletcher (the most boring, self-satisfied couple ever) are walking arm and arm. The guy on the bicycle was an orderly at the hospital. He was a great guy even though I can’t remember his name. I think the woman with him is a nurse. Apparently one of the men on horseback is a friend of Kurt’s from up where we first met him when he was working for an oil company in Alaska. Lillian, Jesse and Calla arrive in a carriage. Miss Sally, Kyle’s mother apparently not up on the latest news, asks Maeve where Kyle is. He’s coming with Reva. That lovely instrumental behind them is “Claire de Lune.” Reva who is for some unknown reason in a private garden is swept away when Kyle shows up to carry her off to the wedding on horseback.

Kurt, Rick, and Phillip (John Bolger version) get dressed throw things wildly out behind a bush and appear in outfits that could very well be Prince Charming out of the Cinderella ball scene. Even the horse is dressed for a prince. The carriage returns with Roxie, Vanessa et al all royally dressed. (It’s interesting because the people who are standing up for them are reversed instead of the bride’s friends with the bride, they’re with the groom, it’s backward. Roxie is a friend of Kurt’s and Phillip and Rick are friends of Mindy’s). Then Mindy arrives in a white carriage wearing her princess bride dress that was given to the Smithsonian.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-OSkUUxYCc (Part 2)

Kurt realizes that he left Mindy’s wedding ring in his other jacket and is now in the pile of clothes Kurt, Rick, and Phillip left where they changed. After swinging up on a white charger to try to get back to where he left the ring, Kurt is cutting it too close. Jessie who apparently hasn’t met anyone in town yet, rushes forward and offers Kurt a ring he can use. The bride’s party arrives with Vanessa as a substitute mother of the bride. Lillian arrives with her sister Calla and her niece Jesse who no one knows yet. Kyle and Reva are all over each other and talking about marrying soon. We cut to where Mindy has a lovely moment with her grandfather H.B. before turning to Billy.

https://youtu.be/dmU3VQeLPOM (Part 3)

“What’s important darling is your marriage [not the wedding]” Great Billy speech to Mindy about the importance of marriage, but apparently he isn’t going to give her away. Kurt, Rick and Phillip go down the aisle in mass to take their positions. Then the flower girl comes down the aisle followed by the preacher. Roxie and Vanessa take their places and then after giving her a moment alone, Billy walks Mindy down the aisle.

https://youtu.be/GRjDu6523mA (Part 4)

We restart the aisle walk at the beginning of a new episode. On the way down Mindy stops and tells H.B. she loves him before Billy presents her to Kurt and the minister begins.

https://youtu.be/IXTbAOvuoZo (Part 5)

Big lush music cues underneath as Kurt and Mindy kneel facing each other in front of the minister and go through the traditional vows. “Until death do us part….but even that won’t separate us, Mindy, because we’ll leave our children behind us to who grow up on the land we own and live in the home we build” (See they were just nuts about building this house.) They complete their vows and go back up the aisle. Vanessa wishes Kurt welcome to the family and we firmly establish Calla and Jessie where Calla wants a marriage for Jessie to land them both on easy street and Jessie wants a great love.

https://youtu.be/MkZ83iuVMMo (Part 6)

This is after everyone finds out the Miss Sally is really Billy’s mother. Maeve is showing signs. Lillian starts to freak out because Beth is missing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzY4djcLJUI (Part 7)

Musical montage of still images from wedding. These are screen captures quite a few for parts of the wedding that weren’t clipped. Kurt and Mindy take off in a helicopter, Mindy drops her bouquet which Roxie catches. Meanwhile back at Lakeland Country Club, Lujack accuses man he thinks is running criminal cartel David Preston. Suzette (who is frequently mentioned since her actress did very well later) apparently is the key to proving Lujack’s case.

New Year’s Eve 1986/1987

December 31, 2015

The IN place to be celebrating this New Years Eve is the Blue Orchid, managed by former hospital executive and general cad Warren Andrews. Watching this in retrospect, 90s clothes had WAY too much bright color blocking. While pretty much everybody is at the Blue Orchid the young generation is away for a ski weekend at a large rented cabin. For a good summary of where we are in the story check out my post about the week before Christmas 1986.

Josh and Reva are newly reunited and Reva is barely pregnant with Marah. Dinah is newly discovered. This is still the first Dinah – really there wasn’t a lot of difference in the first two pale shadows of the Dinah we knew later and it’s pretty clear that neither would have survived life with the carnies. Except for a reasonable resentment towards Vanessa, Dinah is still a sweet girl. She’s living with her newly discovered father Ross Marler, but he’s not really ready to face a daughter he never knew is all grown up – hence the dress. Dinah instead wants to wear the dress from Reva’s wedding. That would be the second broken up Reva-Kyle wedding. Dorrie, Dinah’s once lost foster sister and the unlikely savior of India at the camp where India was sent on community service for her last crime. Reva is working as photographer, has switched from having working for the newspaper and instead is opening a studio. Dinah is being Reva’s photographic protege and working with her boyfriend Cameron on the school paper. This has got quite a bit of Simon and Jessie who dropped so thoroughly off the Springfield radar that many people don’t remember them. Check this out if you don’t.

It’s New Year’s Eve and Rick, Simon and some of the gang have gone on a ski trip. Simon and Jessie broke up a couple months ago, but she has shown up at the cabin where they are staying, to tell Simon she is leaving to go to college at Duke University, and to say goodbye.

Rick playing doctor diagnosis Mindy with a bad sprain from trying too difficult a ski run. Christine – apparently part of Alan’s latest scheme involving art and having an eye on Johnny – is the blonde. A dark hair pageboy haircut girl shows up seeking shelter from the storm. Her name is Bambie and she catches Rick’s eye right away.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQspivmpEAc (Part 2)

Mindy and Rusty are sharing a bedroom since everyone has to double up since they are stranded by a storm. Jessie’s car is buried in the snow. Dinah calls Lillian over for reinforcement when Ross gives her too young a dress. Vanessa is worried about Dinah and establishing a relationship with her. Dorrie is excited and wants to dance with the grown-ups.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vcznp-b_iM (Part 3)

The young part of Springfield is away at a Ski Cabin (not the Bauer) cabin. Rusty and Mindy are fighting fate which currently has them sharing a bedroom. Rusty sees someone right outside bedroom window and takes off. Simon – who is currently on the outs with Jessie – comes to check on her when she tried to drive away from the cabin in bad weather.  Despite India’s recent redemption, courtesy of Dorrie her adopted daughter (the girl dancing at the Blue Orchid), she attempts to blackmail Alan with a recording of him discussing illegal business deals.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CM6ZU5t_hjY (Part 4)

Kyle and Maeve are there and dancing having left baby Ben with a baby sitter. Billy has gone to Venezuela to straighten out troubles there. The man outside the cabin was a hunter, but we’re focusing on the fact Rusty has a handgun. Simon and Jessie are snuggling in the stuck car. Ross: “I hear myself saying things I promised myself I’d never say if I had a child.” Ross and Lillian have a really nice conversation. Alan tells India that the people they are dealing with are WAY more serious than he is and they better cut out this blackmail nonsense before THEY hear about it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uld3nsjalf4 (Part 5)

Simon and Jessie leave the car and break into a nearby cabin where no one was home. Simon: “Remind me to leave some money and a note.” – Cause you’re SO busy right now. Back at the ski cabin Johnny is talking to a blonde I don’t know and Chelsea overhears her saying bad things about her late fiancee Jean Claude who was a major jerk. Johnny finally tells Chelsea about what he knew about Jean Claude being involved with smuggling. Dinah doesn’t like Vanessa because she’s the one who gave her away without even telling Ross she existed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFc6FpPHSdY (Part 6)

HB excuses himself from business when Alexandra returns to the table not to bore the “little lady.” Alex tells him what she thinks of that. Hawk is working up courage to ask Lillian to marry him, but her independence talk puts him off. Dinah and Reva have a talk. Dinah manages to put her foot in her mouth over Reva’s recent romantic adventures, but is insistent that Jeva should be married before the baby is born to give her a family. (And good for Dinah — they really don’t do so well in that department.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWccB5W3YMY (Part 7)

Reva ignores Dinah’s very good advice. While Dinah rejected Vanessa for a long time, she immediately bonded with her grandfather, Henry. Henry gives good advice except he totally gives Vanessa a pass on this…and everything else. He urges Dinah if she can’t really feel respect toward her mother she should ACT like she does. Dinah thinks to herself that she’s doing good not punching Vanessa out and decides it’s better to take off. Alan and Alexander have a nice conversation and Alex says she thinks she’ll find a mysterious new man in the new year.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPT8dK3A624 (Part 8)

Simon and Jessie make love for the first time. Cam and Dinah kiss at midnight. At the cabin they kiss around the group with Mindy/Rusty, Phillip/Chelsea, Roxie/Johnny, and a dark-haired pageboy haircut girl that I don’t recognize and Rick getting the long Midnight kisses. Who you kiss at Midnight on New Years is supposed to be the person you’ll spend the next year with. At the cabin Chelsea starts to sing Auld Lang Syne and it spreads throughout the room and to the Blue Orchid.

Thanksgiving 1986

December 4, 2013
Thanksgiving Dinner 1986

Thanksgiving Dinner 1986 at the Bauer House

It’s Thanksgiving 1986 in Springfield and it’s mostly about the Lewis-Shayne clan. There was a big action/adventure story about the corruption going on in Venezuela, this story would continue unfold for decades playing into Bill Lewis’s issues when he returned for the second time in the person of Dan Cosgrove, kicking off the Bizzie romance. At this point there is active sabotage going on. Recently Mindy’s fairytale marriage to Kurt ended, when angered over their different attitudes towards money, he took a job in Venezuela to help pay back some of the money Mindy had borrowed from her family. While there he was killed mistakenly during a failed attempt to kill Josh. Although I never was a big believer in Kyle and Reva or that Reva would ever pick any other man over Josh longterm, but I did like Kyle and especially his evolving relationship with Billy and his determination to do the right thing by Ben. As you can see in these scenes they’ve totally thrown all of that away in order to excuse Maeve’s inexcusable behavior towards Kyle, explain Ben’s continued presence on screen when Kyle left town, and to facilitate a Jeva reunion, just in time for one of Josh’s previous wives to come back from the dead at an inconvenient time (actually Reva could have bonded with both Annie Dutton and Cleva over that one, but she doesn’t).

The other big story in town was the show’s first real attempt to duplicate the success of the Four Musketeers (they would try this several times over the years with the most successful being this attempt with Alan-Michael, Harley, Dinah, and Cameron filling the four slots).  Towards that end, the girl with the mysterious past has shown up in town and will soon be revealed that she, Dinah, is in fact Ross and Vanessa’s daughter via a long ago relationship. Dinah would be played by two very similar actresses in this first run on the show when her main attributes were being nice and sweet. A trip to Europe would bring out more of the hard struggle side of Dinah and she comes back to town a few years later as a vixen following closely in her mother’s mis-steps. Vanessa had given Baby Dinah up for adoption without ever telling Ross until recently basically because she felt a baby would tie her down and I think to punish Ross (pre-the revelation Billy would bring about in Vanessa, she wasn’t always a very nice person). Dinah is shown slowly fitting in at school working with Cameron. Following Four Musketeer tradition they formed couples and then swapped partners.

Lillian is currently dating Reva’s father Hawk. They dated for a long time and I actually think Lillian was most happy in this relationship with Hawk and they balanced each other well. I was sorry to see it end, though if Hawk was ready to show some good behavior, goodness knows Miss Sarah deserved to benefit from it since she put up with so much of the other kind from him. Ross is currently dating Calla who is Lillian Raines’s sister and Jessie’s (of Jessie and Simon fame) mother. Calla was a lot like a version 1.0 of Nadine. Besides both ladies dating Ross, they also were both manipulative schemers with big dreams (Calla had much better hair and was smarter, Nadine had more personality). A group of three cons have stumbled on to the fact that there is a secret involving Dinah and Vanessa. They haven’t figured out what it is, but thing they can make a buck out of it whenever they do. Hence they are duping the woman that Vanessa stayed with during the obviously showing months of her pregnancy to try to get information from her. The lead con is a busy character actor named William Hickey who did lots of roles on soaps as well as primetime. However, he’s best known as Uncle Lewis in the classic holiday movie, National Lampon’s Christmas Vacation.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0382676/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t13

Elsewhere on canvas there is trouble at the Bauers because Chelsea’s sudden fiance Jon Claude has dropped dead under Rick’s care and for some unfathomable reason Chelsea just assumes there is malpractice and is bringing charges against Rick, which is forcing Maureen as Cedars Administrator to take action against her own step-son and causing a lot of tension between Chelsea and her three main romantic partners on screen, Phillip, Rick, and Johnny. Chelsea is Maureen’s little sister and Bea is their mother and hence while Maureen would expect them both at a family get together she arranged – despite anything else going on. This episode features John Bolger in the role of Phillip and while most people much preferred Grant Aleksander, Bolger did a very serviceable, if understated interpretation of the role. This is a pretty good typical example of how he played Phillip.

Also there at Thanksgiving are Claire and Baby Michelle.

claire-and-baby-michelle-thanksgiving-1986

These scenes are from two episodes. The day before Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving itself. It seems like we might be missing a scene or two, but I’m not sure if we are are not. I think these two episodes together do a pretty good set up of what’s going on, but if you want to watch more the same channel has a few days worth of previous episodes. If you want to see Maeve stop the Reva-Kyle wedding the previous year which Maeve references doing and regretting, find the post here: https://glmanny.wordpress.com/2012/12/16/christmas-1985/

Christmas 1985

December 16, 2012

Christmas seems to be one episode  only in 1985 (although the next three episodes are also on this channel, nothing remotely Christmasy happens except for decorations hanging around so look for them in a later post). We open at the Raines house which for once seems to be a bastion of happiness and the Christmas spirit and full of people with Lillian, Beth, Calla, and Jessie living there and more friends stopping by. There is some tension at the Bauer House as Claire has lost almost all interest in Michelle except for a tool for manipulation and Maureen is doing most of the caretaking. Ed has moved out of the house, but seems to be moving back towards a reconciliation with Maureen, still acting like a husband in public, even if he isn’t welcome back in her bed yet and isn’t living at home. Claire is getting on everyone’s nerves and all the strays end up at the Bauers. It really is a happy Christmas over at the Lewis household and you can see some of the great family interaction that characterized them at their best.

December 24, 1985

Starts with commercial seriously take a look at 0:30

They are shoring up the Raines family with Lillian and Beth entertaining Lillian’s sister Calla and niece Jessie.  Christmas is lovely at the Bauers as usual. Claire is already in her post-Fletcher awful phase and clearly beginning to get on Maureen’s nerves. See Baby Michelle at 3:00 Rick is currently dating Reva’s full sister Roxie who would later spend most of her life confined to a mental hospital after her time in Springfield. Over at the Lewis family home, there is Baby Little Billy 3:20 and everyone is happy, Billy and Vanessa are great together, H.B. is spoiling his first grandson.  Mindy and Kurt are there giving presents. Billy’s soon to  revealed biological mother Miss Sally is just arriving. Maeve-Kyle-Reva are currently in a triangle, but Maeve has the ace, she’s carrying his child, the future Ben Reade.

Ad for Lauren/Paul/Sean storyline (this climaxes in the Lauren buried alive) on The Young and the Restless.

Beth is working with Jackson Fremont (who is Elizabeth Taylor’s step-son in real life) who wants a romance with her. I wonder if the kid carolers are the cast and crew’s kids? Ross seems very friendly with them. This is while Phillip was being played by John Bolger (Ray Bolger, the Wizard of Oz scarecrow’s nephew). Maeve who had done everything possible to land Kyle, once she lands him with the baby decides she doesn’t want him after all and in fact is pretty horrible about denying him any role in Ben’s life (she even fakes a miscarriage), but that all comes later.

I didn’t really care for Rick and Roxie. Only time I really liked them was during the boarding house room switch story, which is already over. I don’t blame Claire for not wanting Fletcher there, but Fletcher had been friends with the Bauers pre-Claire and never really thought about women or their feelings once he dumped them, of course he’d just show up without a thought about how it would make her feel. 3:10 Little Billy opens a present with Mindy and H.B.  H.B.’s right when Miss Sally tries to protect somebody tragedy always follows. She doesn’t want Kyle’s father to acknowledge him because he is a Cardinal in the Catholic Church.

I didn’t remember Calla decorated Ross’ office. I’m on Claire’s side in this. Fletcher was a jerk and he didn’t really have any business being there. Maureen was right every other way, but not about Fletcher, he deserved tossed out on his ear.

This was only halfway through the secret of Kyle coming out. When it finally comes out all the way, Billy was the biological child of H.B. and Miss Sally, but Miss Martha raised him as her own. Kyle was the biological child of Miss Sally and Cardinal Malone, making Kyle and Billy maternal half-brothers and Billy the paternal half-sibling of Josh and Trish. Kurt, Mindy’s husband, is freaking out about the money because he had a lot less than her and that was one of their on-going problems before he was killed where he had taken a job because he thought he needed to earn more money and was too proud to take money from her family. 8:00 That’s so sad that Ben won’t be hanging his Christmas stocking anywhere in 50 years and will never really know either parent and the cycle of not really belonging anywhere continues.

I never really liked Mindy with Kurt Corday, but they did have an amazing wedding. Beth reads some of Phillip’s writing aloud. Kyle Sampson proposes to Maeve Stoddard.

Phillip catches Beth when she falls putting the angel on the Raines family Christmas tree. They made a mention that Bea is at Tony and Annabelle’s. H.B. gives a Christmas prayer.

Ed, Michelle, and Maureen. This was during the time they continuing the scenes under the end credits. I really liked that and it was my favorite way to do the end credits.
