Scene 12

Back in the kitchen, a commotion sounded at the door. Rusty Shayne and Wanda Hite arrived bearing the necessities for Oklahoma BBQ. Rusty had made the trip up from his ranch near Tulsa. He barely got his load down on the kitchen table before Mindy threw her arms around his neck.

“Melinda Sue,” he said happily. “Are you doing as well as you look?”

“As fine as an Oklahoma sunrise. How are you doing?”

“Oklahoma is still less fun without you, but the ranch is doing fine.”

Rick came in a pulled a grimace. Most of Mindy’s ex-es he didn’t much mind. In fact his best friend Phillip was one of them, but Rusty was the one whose relationship went back with Mindy longer than Rick’s. They had grown up together as kids. It was her one relationship that he felt might be as strong as theirs. Rusty and Mindy had grown up together as kids. Rick was happier when he stayed down in Oklahoma where he belonged.

Rick swallowed and walked over with his hand extended. “Rusty,” he said. “Thanks for bringing the Oklahoma BBQ. I know it makes Mindy happy and people have come to expect it now.”

“Don’t mind me and Earl. We make no never mind.”

Mindy jumped in. “Wanda, now you know we see you and Earl a lot more often than we do Rusty.”

Wanda helped balance her load on the back of a chair as she paused. “Where do you want us to set up?”

Billy came in. “Rusty, what are you doing by letting Wanda stand there with a heavy load. I’ll take that.”

During this exchange and the ribbing, a woman with long, black hair pulled into a tight bun. She was dressed too formally for the party in a black suit. She quietly worked her way behind the happy group and edged into a dark corner of the patio.

Scene 12B

The Indian motorcycle continue to drive south. He passed a green highway sign saying, “Springfield 172 miles.” He gunned it around a black suburban and hurried on.

Scene 13

Beth and Phillip had the art auction entries each set up on their own easel along the edge of the patio. Each had a number that matched a description in the glossy printed guide.

Clarissa Marler and Maureen Reardon had the children’s art station all set up. They grabbed kids who arrived early and set them to work on the mural.

Mindy had come out to make sure her fashion drawing she’d donated for the auction looked right, but she had been caught by the sight of the kids playing. It yanked at her heart reminding her of the baby she’d lost and the children she and Rick never had.

Rick had caught Mindy’s expression across the patio and came up behind her. “It looks like they could use some help. Why don’t you dig in there?”

“You think so?”

“I know so. No one spreads sunshine like you do.”

Looking cheered up, Mindy dived into the kids. She started helping a girl make a dog she was painting look a little less like park bench.

The woman with the tight bun had reached the artwork going straight to the painting from the Spaulding attic. She looked the painting over very carefully. She moved back into the shadows and pulled out her cell phone. She pressed a saved number. “It’s definitely THE painting…..No, not yet. I will try to get it before the auction starts. She abruptly ended the call.

Scene 14

Molly Spaulding came rushing into the Bauer kitchen nearly running into Blake and then Buzz in the process. Her dad, Alan-Michael Spaulding, was hot on her heels. “God Dad, stop hovering. I go to college for heaven’s sake. I don’t need you looking over my shoulder all the time.”

“Princess, will you wait up. I wasn’t hovering I was….”

Both continued through the kitchen and out the back door to the patio.

Lucy came in a troubled expression on her face. Frank intercepted her with a hug. “What’s going on, Sis?”

Waving towards the door, “You heard. Molly thinks Alan-Michael has been overly protective and it’s smothering. You know he always was protective, but lately…”

“Did something happen?”

“Well, he went to visit Hope earlier this month…I’m afraid she’s not doing well. Alan-Michael can’t do anything to help her so he’s determined to keep up safe. He knows I can take care of myself, but he’s even been a bit hover-y with me and he’s way overboard with Molly. Then there was her boyfriend.”

“What about him?”

“Tom got a little aggressive with her, enough so she filed a police report.”

“Oh, what did you say his last name is? Does he go to Springfield U with Molly?”

“Yes, he goes to Springfield U, but don’t worry about putting the fear of God into him. Besides making it clear that him that putting hands on a woman like that was NOT acceptable, he also specifically made him aware at the might the Spauldings could bring down on his head. After Brent, Alan-Michael isn’t taking any chances.”

“None of us do,” Frank said pulling Lucy in for a big brotherly hug. He silently gave a prayer of Thanksgiving that it had turned out as well as it had. “I’m glad he’s watching out for both of you.”

“He’s watching over us all right, but it’s driving Molly nuts. When I was her age I was conning people out of jobs and almost ready to decide who I was going to marry. He’s got to give her some space before she does something crazy to assert her independence, and if there’s one thing Alan-Michael and I know about acting out and doing extreme things to get our way….I hope Molly can avoid learning about it.”

Lucy bit her lip and looked out the door in the direction that Alan-Michael and Molly had gone.

Scene 15

Bridget hurried through the Bauer living room towards the front door. Lillian and Buzz were sitting on the couch talking. “Is she here yet? Kat just texted she was almost here.”

Bridget through open the door and there stood Kat looking stark and formal. Bridget paused, and then both women broke into laughter as they hugged each other. Bridget wrapped her arm around Kat’s shoulders. “You’re looking great, Kat. It’s been way too long. What’s it been since we saw each other? Oh, at least a year since you came to visit us in Oakdale.”

“It’s been even longer since I’ve been back to Springfield.” Kat looked back at the open door. “Paul, Hamp, get in here.” Kat shared an exasperated look with her best friend. “You keep thinking it will get easier as they get older — it doesn’t.”

“Tell me about it. Peter’s out of college now and I still worry about him….and he still doesn’t pick up after himself.”

Both women were laughing together when Paul and Hamp walked in, Hamp pulling the door shut behind them.

Hamp looked rebellious. “I still don’t see why we had to come here to celebrate the fourth. The guys and I had pitched in on some fireworks and now I’m going to miss them setting them off.”

Kat walked over to Hamp. “Because the Bauer BBQ is the best time to visit Springfield. It’s the one time when the whole town is together and I want you to meet some of your Grandpa Hamp’s friends. You never got to meet him and I want them to help you get an idea of what he was like. I want you to see his club. Plus this is where I finished growing up. You’ll just have to put up with it. Besides here’s Bridget. You like Bridget don’t you?”

“Ya, Bridget is fun.”

“Thanks…I think.”

“Plus your Uncle Billy is here. He was Grandpa Hamp’s best friends. He can tell you about when they played football together.”

Paul broke in with a smile. “Billy’s here? Where?”

Bridget answered, “Right before you got here he was out watching them set up the grill. I’ll walk you back there….Oh before we do that I want you to meet Lillian and Buzz. Kat, you remember them.”

“Of course…. Boys, Buzz here makes the best non-Bauer burger in town. When I was your age, I used to hang out at his restaurant, the Fifth Street diner, all the time. And this is Lillian she’s the best nurse anywhere.”

Buzz shrugged one shoulder, “Not the greatest….”

Lillian interrupted. “That’s nice of you to say, Sweetie.”

“These are my boys Paul and Hamp.”

Lillian added, “Oh, I see their resemblance to Hamp. Now I think Bridget told me that you were married to Paul Frasier’s son. Ed Bauer has told all about your grandfather. He was one of Ed’s mentors and a great surgeon before he got promoted to administration, but you want to talk about Hamp. Have fun today.”

Bauer BBQ 2017 by Robansuefarm Part 1

July 5, 2017

Author’s Note: This year’s Bauer BBQ fanfic is much more like a real set of Bauer BBQ episodes. I really love how it’s turning out and I hope you enjoy it. I haven’t broken it into actual episodes, but there are obvious places for commercial breaks that I put in.

I outlined it first and mostly stuck to that numbering so I could keep track of the different storylines.  I’ve kept my original scene numbers from my outline just to keep things easier for me, but you’ll see notes I’ve included when they’ve had to change. When I realized I needed to add a scene I added an A or a B. It really should be broken up into multiple episodes and I probably would have done that if I had gotten it done early enough, but I ran out of time. If I repost it next year, I may get that part fixed when I polish it.

So the lesson is start working on your Bauer BBQ 2018 RIGHT NOW!

Bauer BBQ 2017 by Robansuefarm Part 1

Scene 1A

It was early morning at the Bauer House. Rick Bauer stood at the flag pole in the side yard of the family home. *

He looked around at the young Bauers standing around him. He looked at his children, Jude and Leah. He had always wanted children and even if he hadn’t been able to play as active a role as he would had hoped in their lives during their younger years, he couldn’t be prouder of his children. He was only sorry he never had more. There could never be too many Bauers.

Standing next to his kids were his nephew and nieces, Robbie, Hope, and Danielle. He was still grateful that Michelle and Danny had moved back from California when they had. His little sister was raising some great kids.

“OK troops! Let’s raise the flag.”

Robbie snaps the flag open with a practiced hand. He has been doing it for years. Even before they moved to California he remembered doing this with his Grandpa Ed. It is one of Robbie’s favorite parts of the BBQ. Being careful not to let the flag touch the ground, he clipped it in place and briskly ran it up the flag pole.

Rick spoke. “Every year we start the BBQ by raising the flag. The tradition goes back to picnics Papa and Mama Bauer used to have on the Fourth. They started every one by raising the flag. Papa Bauer is who I am named for. Robbie also is partially named for him. He was your Great-Great-Grandfather and I want you to remember his gratitude for living in this country, for the new chance it gave him, and all the hard work he and Mama Bauer did giving the Bauers a strong start in this country. It’s up to you to remember and pass this knowledge along so that someday YOUR great-great-grandchildren will do this and remember how glad and how proud we are to be Americans.”

Rick says something like this to the children every year when they raise the flag. He wanted to engrave it on their memories so it would be passed on.

*NOTE: The flagpole only appeared during the BBQ when they showed this scene and seemed to be set up wherever was convenient. Since we don’t really know what was in the sideyard of the house that’s where I put it and will keep it as necessary.

Scene 1B

The group trouped over to the garage apartment. It was already bubbling with talk and laughter. Mindy was right in her element as she made breakfast with the rest of the kids that had spent the night. Friends of the Bauer kids and mostly family friends before them, spending the night before meant they had early dawn help available if they needed it and kept the kids busy if it wasn’t.

Rick paused near the door to think how beautiful and happy his wife was surrounded by children. He was sorry she never had a biological child who had lived, but she had determined to be the best step-mother and aunt in the world and, as always Rick thought with a smile, what Mindy determined to do got done.

Rick walked over and noisily kissed his wife. “How are things going in here?”

“Everybody’s doing great. I’m glad the garage apartment is empty this year. This is a lot easier than getting them breakfast in the same kitchen where we’re prepping the BBQ.”

Rick silently nodded in agreement. He loved Mindy. She was a good cook now, but she was still enough of a princess that she never washed a plate. He was glad this mess wasn’t in his prep area. Rick didn’t bother with breakfast, he just enjoyed the chaos.

Scene 2

Later Rick stood in the Bauer kitchen and surveyed his domain. The rest of the year this was a kitchen, but today it was the prep area where he launched an attack to feed an unlimited number of family, friends, coworkers, acquaintances, and even complete strangers who would show up at THE place to celebrate the Fourth in Springfield. There had been a time when he had felt so shoved to the side, almost like he, heck, the BAUERS hadn’t had a place on the canvas that was the community of Springfield. He had lost heart and so had the BBQ, but ever since 2010 after Michelle and Danny had moved back he had felt all the glory of the BBQ again and moved heaven and earth to make sure each year was the best year ever.

In a way prepping for the BBQ was like emergency triage, but this was a good kind without the pain, horror, and blood. Instead the constant attention, prioritizing, improvising was of everyone remembering the community and having a good time.

“Listen everyone! It’s time for the hat ceremony….Leah, if you’re ready.” Rick bent down and Leah picked up the Bauer BBQ chef’s hat. Ed had always worn it and Rick had taken it with great significance when Ed had passed it down to him, but since this had become his and Leah’s special moment it became even more important to him.

Everyone in the kitchen paused and clapped as Leah, put it on his head, aware of what this meant. “The Hat” was always an important part of the BBQ.

“Back to work!” Rick called as the moment passed. Once the hat was on his head he felt like a general martialing the troops. He picked up his clipboard “Reports!”

“Danny, condiments!”

“Rick, I used to run a restaurant I think I can handle….” Danny protested, but as usual it fell on deaf ears.

“I said condiments!”

Danny sighed, rolling his eyes at Michelle. “There is ketchup and mustard at two condiment stations around the backyard and plenty of back up for each. The relish and onions are ready to put out. Salt and pepper shakers and napkins on each table. Everything is ready to go.”

Rick tapped the end of his pen against his teeth. “I don’t know that this idea of yours using big pumps instead of lots of normal bottles is going to go.”

“Rick, it will be fine!” Michelle broke in.

Rick sighed and made a note to ask people about it later to find out how it had gone over.

“Michelle, desserts!”

“I made 2 dozen of Grandma Bert’s apple pies this year. They are cooling as we speak AND don’t you even think of hiding one. If you don’t get any I’ll make some again in the near future, as soon as you peel the apples for me. The watermelon is on ice and Danny has his stuff ready to carve it when ready.”

“How about the ice cream?”

“You’ll have to ask Lewis about that. He and Lizzie decided to turn hand churning ice cream into a contest this year.”

Rick frowned. This was the kind of thing he expected to be consulted on. “Blake, you may have to go on an ice cream run later.”

“Have car keys will travel. Although how I became the designated errand girl…”

“We appreciate you being ready to lend a hand when needed, Blake. Salads!”

“Rick, you can see I’m finishing up the cabbage and apple salad. Frank and Buzz have coleslaw on their list to bring and the potato salad is in the fridge.”

“Bert’s recipe?”

“Nope, you always ask me, so I got Bea’s recipe this year from Michelle. I thought it would make a nice change.” Rick’s face grew stormy until she added. “I remember it was always a struggle between Ed and Maureen. I thought I’d let Maureen win this year.”

Rick bit off his protest. Since it WAS for Maureen he let it go and checked it off his list.

“Bridget, Dylan, lettuce salad bar!”

“Rick, we make it all the way here for the BBQ this year and got here extra early so you can shout at us? I think we got it.”

Dylan cut in, figuring it was better to humor Rick. “We’re still chopping. All varieties of salad dressing requested are checked off the list. We’ve got the ice and the thermometer to check all the salads to keep them out of the danger zone.”

Rick grunted. He spared a glance. “Bridget, it’s a great think you got back with Dylan. Clearly he’s the one with sense in your family.”

Bridget picked up a pair of salad tongs to throw at Rick as he turned his back and walked away, but Dylan took them out of her hand. “Humor him.”

Just then Kevin kicked at the door. Bridget wiped her hands on a towel and went to let him in. Kevin and Jason each entered carrying two large, stuffed full reusable grocery bags a piece, closely followed by Frank and Buzz weighed down by coolers.

Buzz asked, “Are you going to give us a hand, Rick?”

“Nope, that’s what these two strapping young men are for,” he answered putting an arm around both Kevin and Jason. Rubbing his hands together, he added, “You’ve brought the ground sirloin. It’s time to make some magic…Rachel Ray and Emeril have nothing on me. Bauer Burgers here we come!” *

*NOTE: The Rachel Ray etc. line came from Michael O’Leary’s appearance on a talk show making Bauer Burgers. See my making Bauer Burgers post.

Scene 3

The boys were still eating when the girls finished and moved on to decorating. Sarah Randall and Emma Spaulding were Hope Santos’s best friends. The three of them had formed Les Tres Amigas Science Club* which had made Sarah’s Grandpa Billy laugh although he hadn’t explained why he thought the name was so funny. He wasn’t laughing at their interest in science and had helped throw open the doors to Lewis Oil walking them through the operation and answering every question they had even if he had to hunt up someone to tell them all the answer.

Today Hope, Sarah, and Emma were working with the smaller girls Dani, Frankie, and Peyton.** on decorating the Bauer House inside and out to within an inch of its life. The girls were talking and laughing happily together. Little Billy was there too, as usual joined at the hip with his best friend Dani.

Michelle trusted Hope to watch out for the other children, but after that treehouse stunt with Dani and Little Billy last March, Michelle felt better keeping them under a watchful eye so when the Coopers showed up she’d slipped out of the kitchen. The kids ran around up one ladder and down another putting up flags, banners, bunting, and sparkles wherever they could.

Michelle shook her head at a lopsided bundle on one of the portico corners. She moved one of the ladders over to climb up to fix it herself shaking her head that they could make such a din. She hadn’t gotten very far when a couple of arms came around her and pulled her off the ladder.

A sardonic, but gorgeous gaze met her own. “And what, may I ask, were you doing on a ladder?”

Michelle tried to brazen it out, pretending her husband wasn’t holding her in his arms. She smoothed out her top and picked a couple of imaginary pieces of lint off her culottes. “I was straightening that bundle of course. It would be done by now, if you hadn’t had to show off those big muscles of yours.” Michelle crossed her arms and scowled at him.

Danny laughed as he put her down. “None of that little missy. I’m on to your tricks. You were on that ladder when you KNOW we agreed you wouldn’t be. I’m not letting you pick a different fight to get off the hook. I think I see where your daughter got her illicit climbing inclinations.”

“Perfectly, right – from you!” Michelle said frostily, but with just a hint of a smile behind it as she gestured towards her old balcony with her head. Then she blushed and smiled. “OK you caught me. I said I wouldn’t get on any ladders today, but it would only take me a minute to fix that one crocked bunch….”

“Correction. It will just take ME a minute. Now tell me exactly what you want me to do.”

Michelle’s smile grew downright naughty, but now was not the time, so she had Danny straighten the clump until it was perfect.

*NOTE: Les Tres Amigos or LTA was an independent oil company started in the early 1980s. The original members were Josh Lewis (Billy’s brother), Amanda Spaulding, and Ross Marler. Eventually Billy came to town and pushed his way in. It eventually was folded into Lewis Oil. Clearly the children never heard of it and why should they have….until Grandpa Billy gets around to explaining the joke.

**NOTE: Dani Santos (Manny’s daughter), Frankie Cooper (Daughter of Frank Cooper and Natalia Aitoro), and Peyton Spaulding.

Scene 4

Meanwhile in Chicago, a helmeted figure, dress all in black leather, adjust the chin strap on his helmet with the smoke visor. He pulled on his leather gloves. He approached his black Indian motorcycle. He saddled up, revved the engine and turned the bike south, towards Springfield.

Bauer BBQ 2014 by Robansuefarm Chapter 4

July 8, 2016

AUTHOR’S NOTE:  In the last chapter, I hope you had a great time at Bauer BBQ 2014 and enjoyed seeing everyone. It took me WAY past the end of July to finish this fanfic which just tells you it’s time to get started on yours for next year NOW! Tell me what YOU think Bauer BBQ 2017 will be like and share. I also should mention I have a thing about people not doing the bridal march properly. If anything looks ungainly it’s just stomping down the aisle like you were walking anywhere else, so I spell out the proper steps.

Bauer BBQ 2014 by Robansuefarm Chapter 4

The crowd slowly shifted from the Bauer patio through the hedge to the Spaulding backyard. Rick led the way over the flat part of the lawn. It had rented white folding chairs set up in two groups with a white carpet runner up the middle between the two groups. The chairs were all faced in one direction facing the white wood trellis covered with red roses. A small string ensemble softly began playing background music. The guests gradually settled down and even the whispers trailed off as the music picked up in volume and intensity. A side door opened in the Spaulding Mansion and a group of men emerged. Most of them were wearing tuxedos. Ray lead the group wearing his clerical robes. Behind him came Frank Cooper, Phillip Spaulding, Rick Bauer, and Robbie Santos. They filed past slowly taking their places in a line in front of the arbor. Again the music hit a chord and the French doors opened again and this time Danny Santos came walking out to take his place beside his son and best man, Robbie. He just couldn’t quit smiling. He grinned back down at his son who was bursting with pride at his special role as best man. Danny resisted rumpling his hair because Robbie was trying so hard to act grown up. He looked up over Robbie’s head at his friends. Rick who he now considered his brother and he was happy to say the affection and connection was now returned. Beyond him was Phillip Spaulding. There had always been a sort of respect and connection between the two men and Phillip and Danny’s relationship had grown over the years. After they had returned to town and Danny accepted the job at Spaulding Enterprises they had grown quite close. He and Michelle had been included in the Four Musketeers social sphere since their return and while he once never would have believed it, he felt part of that group. The last one of his groomsmen was Frank Cooper, who had long been one of his best friends, Danny did turn away and suddenly grimaced at the thought of how lost he’d gotten during Michelle’s amnesia. How could he have betrayed his good friend like that? Reaching out to Frank’s daughter in his desperate search for normalcy, he wouldn’t have blamed Frank if he’d never forgiven him and he thanked God that he had.

Danny was distracted by the flash of color when Michelle’s cousin Bridget moved from her position at the table with the reception book to her seat beside her husband, Dylan Lewis. Danny’s eyes locked on the far side of white carpet runner. He heard his daughter giggling behind the hedge. The string quartet struck up playing “Too Busy Being in Love” and Chelsea Reardon, Michelle’s aunt, began to sing.

As the words to the song ended and began again the second time through as an instrumental, Hope appeared and took her time centering herself on the white carpet. She paused and giggled again, Danny wasn’t sure if it was because she was so happy or because his little drama queen wanted to make sure that all attention on her before she started down the aisle. She took a breath, grinned, and started down the aisle taking loooong steps in the proper bridal march; right step, together, left step, together, right step….. As she went she sprinkled pink rose petals along the aisle in her fluffy, light pink dress. She arrived at the end of the aisle and stepped over to the far side next to the groomsmen.

Next down the aisle, dressed in a matching dress only in a dusky rose, came Beth. Step right, together, left step, together, right step… Beth also carried a short, dark haired beauty, the latest pride of their love, Danielle. Danielle was the other flower girl, but had proven very definitely at the rehearsal that she couldn’t be trusted walking down the aisle either alone or with her big sister. Beth was about halfway down the aisle when the next lady in pink appeared around the hedge, it was Drew, Michelle’s maid of honor from their church wedding at Casa Santos. They hadn’t really been close before that, but they had grown close over the next few years and had kept in touch even after she moved to New York and they had moved to California. Drew was beaming and had a calm, contentment she had never shown before having finally made peace with her marriage, the lies and hurts of her childhood, and made her faith a strong tenant in her life. Beth had reached the altar and moved to her place at the far end. When Drew hit the middle point of the aisle, the final bridesmaid, Michelle’s step-sister Blake took her turn to walk down the aisle. When Blake hit the assigned point, Mindy, Michelle’s sister-in-law and matron of honor, started down the aisle in her matching dress. Mindy followed down the aisle and moved into her matron of honor position and put Dani down and held her hand. Dani showed that she could be just as much a center of attention as her big sister as she wore her matching light pink dress. She smiled at the audience did her best expression that she always used on her daddy when she wanted him to give her something and then she stuck her hand down and grabbed the hem of her skirt and yanked it up revealing her special lace lollies as the audience broke into general laughter. Accepting she’d had her due, Dani dropped her hand and fastened her eyes on where she remembered her mommy reappearing last night at the rehearsal.

The music changed and began the bridal march and just like that Michelle stepped onto the end of the white runner. The fluffy white dress focused on its sweetheart neckline and made a shawl collar and a flowing skirt that ended mid-calf. A narrow pink sash of pink encircled Michelle’s waist and tied behind. Around her neck was a gold chain, three charms hung from it, a locket with Maureen’s photo inside, a third grade spelling bee winning charm, and a charm shaped like the house they had finally built at Laurel Falls. Michelle’s hair had been twisted into an updo and was covered by a Mantea. It was the one from their Church wedding and while their feelings of that event were twisted by his family’s involvement, the service had still meant a lot to both of them. After all, it was that ceremony that kept that bound to each other through all eternity in the eyes of the Church. During the annulment separation, it had been the one piece of clothing of Michelle’s that Danny had kept. They felt it was an important tie to a part of their past.

It had been hard on Danny and Michelle both to spend the night before the wedding apart, they had always hated to spend a night apart, even before their fake marriage had turned real. It was worse than ever now when they were used to cuddling and ….. more…. every night in their California king size bed. Their eyes met across the garden and then Michelle’s face broke like the sun in their secret smile. Bill Lewis stepped up beside her and she came down the aisle on his arm.

Michelle and Danny were so focused on each other that everyone else faded into the background. Danny took Michelle by the hand and they kneeled beside each other facing Ray in his role as their priest. They vaguely heard Ray say, “Who gives this woman in marriage?” and Bill answer, “On behalf of her parents and myself, I do.” They both missed it, but Bill winked at them as he said the myself part.

Ray started. “We are here today to celebrate the renewed marriage of Daniel Santos and Berta Michelle Bauer Santos.” He bestowed on the crowd a welcoming smile. “Michelle and Danny have had a little trouble getting this right.” Another smile, met with a chuckle from the audience. “This is the seventh time they have come together before God and dedicated their lives, their hearts, and their sacred honor to each other. While they separated on several occasions, they have always honored their vows. During their original pre-cana, Danny and Michelle discovered just how closely their desires were for the same type of marriage, the same type of life and while they faced many challenges they have created that life for themselves and their children.”

As one Michelle and Danny turned to look at their children in turn, to Robbie who was standing beside his father as his best man, to Hope and then Dani who were serving as flower girls. Their children beamed back at them.

“Danny and Michelle have written their own vows.”

Michelle handed Mindy her bouquet. They stood and faced each other.

Danny cleared his throat. “Michelle, I know we took the scenic route to get where we are.” More laughter from the audience and he waited until it ebbed before he continued, “We both had a lot to learn to get this far. This is OUR life, OUR family, and we need to be willing to fight for it to be what we want. I mean you look innocent and beautiful and soft and pink, but underneath you’re like steel. I always knew you had that in you. It’s one of the reasons I fell in love with you. You never really gave up on me deep down and so you never really let me give up on myself, not quite all the way and we made it, baby. I look around now and I can’t believe what we’ve built together. I knew I was lying to you that day by the park bench when I told you I could never be happy in your life, but I had no idea just how wonderful it could be. Thank you, my beautiful wife for all eternity.”

Michelle replied, “Danny, a few years ago, I was talking to Marah and when I got home I wrote what I said down and kept it because it was so right. I’ve taken it out to read while times were difficult and I want to share it with you now.” Michelle unfolded and smoothed the faded and crinkled piece of paper. She looked up at Danny as her hand slightly shook. She smiled, “Remember I dropped my vows on our first wedding day. I’ll try to do better today…..Looking back I wouldn’t do a thing differently because you are worth it. It’s like we’re on some kind of a journey. Sometimes you lose direction, sometimes it’s me, but we’re supposed to be traveling together. I know that in my bones, sometimes it’s the only thing I do know, but I am sure, so wherever we end up together I know that’s where I want to be. Thank you, my handsome husband for all eternity.”

They stood and Michelle turned to the audience, letting go of one of Danny’s hands and turning him with her. “And I want to also thank all of you for being part of our special day. This is the third time we’ve recited vows on July 4th. Ray has been there for all three times.” She paused turning to smile back at him before continuing. “The first time we said our vows on this day we skipped the Bauer BBQ to do it, but the other two times we’ve been here and that’s better. The Bauer BBQ is very special for our family. The tradition of marking Independence Day as an important occasion dates back to my Great-Grandfather Papa Bauer. He and Mama Bauer were immigrants and truly appreciated the gift that was the United States. The party got a little bigger under my Grandma Bert whose apple pie recipe I always make for this day. Finally my parents, Ed and Maureen turned it into the celebration it is today. A celebration of family, friends, and the Springfield community. A place where everyone is welcome, old connections are refreshed, and where we celebrate the spirit of this country. A lot of you who knew me then questioned my choice when I wed Danny the first time, but you were wrong. It scared me so much I was afraid to admit, but the first time I looked into Danny’s eyes I saw my soul, his soul, as one and that’s what I still see. I also see so much love and that’s a love we share with all of you. I recently read a quote that made me think about Grandma Bert’s apple pies. Love is not a single pie (p-i-e), hand out your 8 slices and you’re done. Love is pi (p-i), irrational and never ending. Thank you for being here to day to help celebrate our irrational, never ending love.” Michelle turned back to Danny, re-clasped his hand and they shared their secret smile.

Danny whispered, “That’s perfect, you’re perfect.”

Ray cleared his throat bringing attention back to him and said, “The ceremony of marriage in which you come to be united is one of the first and oldest ceremonies in the entire world, celebrated in the beginning in the presence of God himself. Marriage is a gift in that we give ourselves totally to one another. I believe that marriage is a gift given to comfort the sorrows of life and to magnify life’s joys.”

“Marriage is the clasping of hands, the blending of two hearts, the union of two lives into one, and your marriage must stand, not by the authority of the State, nor by the seal on your wedding certificate, but by the strength and power of the faith and love you have in one another.”

“Repeat after me.”

Danny grinned, “I think we’ve got this.” He grinned at Michelle. She had handed her bouquet to Mindy and then clasped both of Danny’s hands.

Danny looked deeply into her eyes and vowed,”I, Danny, take you Michelle, to be my lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part.”

Ray added, “Danny, do you take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife? Forsaking all others, be faithful only to her so long as you both shall live?”

Danny had never looked happier when he said, “I do.”

Looking just as serious, Michelle vowed in turn. “I, Michelle, take you Danny, to be my lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part.”

Ray responded, “Michelle, do you take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband? Forsaking all others, be faithful only to him so long as you both shall live?”

Michelle replied, “I do.”

Ray continued, “Having this kind of love in your hearts for one another, you have chosen to exchange rings as the sign and seal of the promises you are making to one another today. Rings are very large in their significance. They are made of a precious metal and precious stone, and that reminds us that love is not cheap or common; but indeed love is very costly and dear to us. These rings are also made in a circle and their design tells us that we must keep love continuous throughout our whole lives even as the circle of the ring is continuous. As you wear these rings, whether you are together or apart for even just a moment, may these rings be a constant reminder of the promises you are making to one another this day.”

“Danny, will you please take this ring and place it upon the finger of Michelle’s left hand, and holding her hand in yours, please repeat this promise to her saying after me: With this ring, I seal my promise, to be your faithful and loving husband, as God is my witness.”

Danny repeated, “With this ring, I seal my promise, to be your faithful and loving husband, as God is my witness.”

Ray looked at Michelle, “Michelle, will you please take this ring and place it upon the finger of Danny’s left hand, and holding his hand in yours please repeat this promise to him saying after me: With this ring, I seal my promise, to be your faithful and loving wife, as God is my witness.”

Michelle repeated, “With this ring, I seal my promise, to be your faithful and loving wife, as God is my witness.”

“Michelle and Danny, you have come here today before us and before God and have expressed your desire to become husband and wife. You have shown your love and affection by joining hands, and have made promises of faith and devotion, each to the other, and have sealed these promises by the giving and the receiving of the rings. Therefore, it is my privilege as a minister and by the authority given to me by the State of Illinois, I now pronounce that you are husband and wife. Danny, you may kiss your the bride.”

“Ladies and gentlemen, it is my privilege to introduce to you once again Senor and Senora Santos.”

Michelle let out a little shriek as Danny suddenly swept her off her feet, with one arm under her knees and the other around her waist. He spun around to face the audience and as Michelle’s arms automatically came around Danny’s neck and he kissed her soundly.

Author’s Note: I said at the beginning that I was withholding my initial author’s note and now you can see why. Danny and Michelle were getting ready to renew their vows at the Bauer BBQ 2014. Danny spent the night at the Bauer House to honor the tradition of not seeing the bride before the wedding. Michelle I’m sure noted that got him out of working at the BBQ and Danny responded it meant he had to make sure everything for the wedding was ready. The special thing Robbie carried in first was his tuxedo. Michelle went in from the BBQ to get ready for the wedding. Michelle and Danny are FINALLY living in their Laurel Falls House because we’ve all agreed not to mention or think about Tattoo Tony ever, ever again so it isn’t strange for them. The kids are going to spend the night at the Bauer House to watch the fireworks with Rick and Mindy, so Danny and Michelle can head out to the Springfield Inn to make some fireworks of their own. And I think then they will finally go to Majorca, but they’ll take the kids.

I put in dialogue from several key Manny scenes and referenced several others. I hope you enjoy it.

That’s what I think happened at Bauer BBQ 2014. If you want to imagine what will happen during Bauer BBQ 2017. Start writing now.

Words to “Too Busy Being In Love”, Note: I think these are listened to lyrics and I differ in a couple of points with them. I edited in a couple of places, but let a couple I weren’t sure were right.

A Season of New Beginnings: A Continuation by Robansuefarm Chapter 5

December 25, 2014

AUTHOR AND REPUBLISHER NOTE: We wind up a final chapter in our Christmas fanfic.

A Season of New Beginnings: A Continuation by Robansuefarm Chapter 5

Michelle peeked out into the main ballroom of the country club. The decorations were really beautiful. Strings of white Christmas lights, Christmas trees with gold decorations, and Christmas wreaths filled every corner and cranny of the room. The turnout was great, the room was completely filled. She looked out and right away her eye was drawn to the man she loved more than life itself. Danny was standing on the steps leading up to the stair landing across the room. He looked incredible in his tux with his hair slicked back. Michelle couldn’t help it, she licked her lips and wished away all the people she’d been so pleased to see just a moment before, jealous of having to share him with the crowd and wanting to show him just how much she appreciated him. Reluctantly she drew her eyes away from him before she gave in to the impulse to run over to him and drag him out of the room to first available room with a locking door.

Michelle’s eye next fell on the men standing on the steps beside him, his cousins Ray and Tony. Beyond Tony was her best friend Bill Lewis, but her eye kept being drawn back to Danny. To avoid the temptation, after all it couldn’t possibly be that much longer that she would have to wait now, she drew the crack in between the curtains closed, covering the opening between the small side room and the main ballroom. Michelle turned her back on the curtains. She crossed over the other side of the small room looking closely at all her family and friends gathered there. Everyone looked so elegant, dressed for the Special Occasion. Abby was there at her side. Her cousin Bridget Reardon Lewis had come from Michigan in honor of such a big night. Bridget’s son little Peter was so cute dressed in his tiny tux. Lizzie Spaulding was wearing a little fluffy dress that made her look like a little princess. A dark haired beauty, Danny’s sister Pilar was there, too. Michelle giggled. She never thought she could feel so happy, so it didn’t take much to make the laughter spring to her lips. This time she had thought that for once it was everyone else’s turn to wear pink as it was the color of every dress in the small sideroom, besides her own.

Michelle had been right, it hadn’t been long to wait at all. The orchestra was starting to play an instrumental version of “When You Say Nothing at All” the song that had awaken Michelle on the fateful day that she met Danny.  Michelle thought the words along to the music, : “It’s amazing how you can speak right to my heart, without saying a word you can light up the dark”. It truly did amaze her that she could count the number of days ago that the love described in the song was an impossible dream, but now it was her reality. Lizzie, experienced at this, grabbed Peter’s hand and propelled him along through the now opened curtains. Next Bridget followed along watching Peter proudly as she walked behind him, just as her husband Dylan was doing from his chair in the ballroom.

Pilar crossed to Michelle as Bridget left and took both her hands in hers. “Buena Suerte, mi hermana. But I’m sure you won’t need it.” Pilar picked up the flowers off the nearby table and followed Bridget out into the main ballroom. Michelle watched her walk straight across the room towards the staircase and thought she was smiling just a little too intently at Bill Lewis. Michelle would have to pump her friend for information on this the next time she saw him. She suspected Bill was holding out on her. Abby gave her hug and quick kiss being very careful not to smudge her makeup. “I love you, sweetie. I’m so glad everything is working out for you. You had us worried for awhile you know.”

Michelle simply beamed at her sister-in-law, the whole funk over Jesse seemed so long ago. She’d wasted all that time, but it had led her to standing here today so she couldn’t really regret it. What, she wondered, would have happened if they hadn’t been assigned to do the decorations together? Just the thought of it sent a shiver down her spine. It really did seem almost as if someone had planned that it turned out that way. Abby was gone now having followed Pilar out from behind the curtains.

Rick, who had entered the room a little while before, crossed to her and took her arm. “Hey, little sister, if you’re having second thoughts, I happen to know several back ways out of this place. Just say the word.”

Michelle lightly punched her joking brother on the arm. “I’m more certain about this than anything else in my whole life, Rick,” she said seriously, meaning every word.

“OK, then, we might as well go.” Rick gave an exaggerated sigh. “Your Sir Galahad is waiting.” Michelle thought it was a darn good thing for Rick that she was feeling so full of love and joy today or she might have had to plan some retaliation for her “humorous” big brother.

Michelle’s thoughts were interrupted by the music changing. Everyone in the ballroom stood up and turned to face the curtained archway. Michelle and Rick both stepped out together with their right foot (Step, together, step, together). Michelle once again mentally added the words to the music, “Here comes the bride.”

Michelle looked around the room. Her eyes played over the right side of the church which was full of mostly dark haired strangers. Most of Danny’s family she knew was in the wedding party, but she was sure she’d be meeting the others soon. Down in the front row sat Abuela Maria. She sat on the aisle end of the row and looked like the cat who swallowed the canary. An identical look was on Aunt Meta’s face as she sat across the aisle from her on the bride’s side.

Looking to her left Michelle saw the rows filled with family and friends. All the people who had supported who growing up were there. There were Phillip and Beth Spaulding with James. There was Holly and Fletcher Reade. There was Vanessa and Billy Lewis beside Mindy and Rusty Shayne. Her Aunt Hillary sat in the front row. Dozens of family and friends filled every chair. Still Michelle’s heart wrenched that neither Maureen nor Ed were there. Then she found Danny’s eyes and nothing else mattered. She had him. He was missing his father just as much she was she knew, but all she saw in his eyes was understanding, joy, and love. She shone it all back to him.

Michelle’s thoughts played back over the last year. It had been a long time since Michelle didn’t have anything better to do than to count days, but last night, for old times sake, she had done the math. Today was day 562 since Jesse Blue had dumped her for Drew Jacobs. A day she now blessed. If Jesse hadn’t left her, she might never have found Danny, a thought not to be borne. Today, day 372 since she met Danny, was the happiest day she ever had and she was sure day 1860, day 5580, day 18,250 would be even happier. It had been quite a year. After that night locked in the lighthouse together, they had barely been able to stand being apart. There had been challenges, Rick hadn’t been too thrilled that Michelle was serious about anybody let alone someone connected with a mob family. But Michelle stood firm that she would be with Danny and much to Michelle’s surprise she had Aunt Meta’s whole hearted support. Danny proved over the course of the year that he wasn’t going anywhere and he would take care of Michelle, so finally Rick came around. He still wasn’t happy about the match, but he was willing to take part in the wedding which was more than could be said about Carmen.

Carmen had looked at Danny marrying his old girlfriend Teresa as her last chance to gain more influence in the business again. Teresa idolized Carmen and was very open to any of her suggestions. Carmen took the loss of this influence badly, especially when Michelle stood firm with her and supported Danny in whatever he wanted to do. She blamed Michelle for her loss of influence and the animosity she held towards towards “that Bauer girl” was almost palpable. Danny had finally had to move out of Casa Santos and into the Bauer family lighthouse while he waited for the house he was building for himself and Michelle at Laurel Falls to be finished. Even though Michelle and Danny had both sought Carmen out in person and asked her to come to the wedding, she had refused to come and Abuela Maria stood in place of Danny’s parents.

There had been highlights as well. They had held a bonfire and burned her Jesse mementos including that fuzzy blue robe. She had rolled up and stuck in the back of the closet the drawings Jesse had done of her, even though Danny said that Jesse hadn’t done her justice, she thought they  might want the drawings someday. He had burned some things that connected with his family’s mob past. They had both felt so much freer and lighter when it was done. Danny had come with Michelle to the Bauer BBQ and Michelle had started to go to Mass with Danny, at least on the major feast days. It made her feel another connection with Maureen who had also been Catholic. Michelle felt that Maureen would approve of this match.

They had “christened” places all over town, but hadn’t been together for a week to make the wedding night very special. Michelle had been on birth control, but she and Danny had discussed it and decided they wanted a family soon and she had gone off the pills after the last time she was with Danny. Her smile grew even wider that the next time they were together they could be creating their new son or daughter.

Danny watched Michelle walk down the aisle towards him on Rick’s arm. He was amazed that every time he saw her she was more beautiful and she was more than that. She was smart. She was kind. She was feisty. He’d never known that he could feel so close to anyone. It was like he had lived most of his life missing part of himself and now he’d found it, found her. And even more remarkable to him, she felt the same way about him.

Danny had been suspicious. It was awfully convenient how they’d gotten locked together in the basement of the lighthouse behind a door that Michelle never remembered sticking before and even more convenient that it was Dietz who discovered them the next morning. It was still more convenient how quickly his Abuela and Michelle’s Aunt Meta had become some great friends, like they had known each other for a long time before he and Michelle met. Also, he really hadn’t bought his Abuela’s explanation that she’d had one of the maids take down all the family photos in her room to dust them between when he left and Michelle’s arrival, but had them all back in place by the next day. “It was the most efficient way to do it!” she’d declared, as Danny cocked an eyebrow at her. But in the end he’d decided to let it go. He’d found Michelle and exactly how didn’t really matter.

Michelle arrived at the steps and she took the last few steps alone to stand by Danny. Danny whispered, “Hola! Mi esposa bonita.” Michelle who had learned a lot more Spanish over the past year, whispered back, “Hola! Mi esposo perfecto.” Together they turned together to face Father Tomas, to find their new beginning. After all, it was the season for them.

Father Tomas began, “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to join together in holy matrimony Daniel Santos and Berta Michelle Bauer….”

THE END

Bizzie at Billy and Vanessa reception

Bizzie at Billy and Vanessa reception

I have been wanting to watch the last two weeks of Guiding Light again in real time. It ended up being a bad time for me to do the whole thing this month, but I’m going to finish out the week starting today in honor of the five year anniversary of the final episode. Find my episode comment posts from July 2009 through September 2009 in the blog archives.

September 15, 2009 –  The Wedding Continues, Alan Says Goodbye

NOTE: During the last couple of months of Guiding Light, I did a daily feedback and summary post. I had just started my blog and it was an early experiment that helped establish my style. I put comments and summaries on the same storyline together, with time tags to the different parts of the episode. I put the official CBS link at the end. Sadly that is no long viable so I’m going to put the YouTube link at the beginning instead. The time codes are for a full episode load and so won’t match, but should still give you a rough idea. Also the parts are on a playlist in the wrong order, so you have to watch or it will jump to different parts of the last week, if you don’t watch it.

Everyone mixes and mingles at Vanessa and Billy’s wedding reception. [Minute 0] Marina and Shayne are relishing parenthood. Lizzie and Jonathan have a talk about their future with Sarah. [Minute 1, Minute 23] Both newlywed couples stand on a balcony and kiss.  They bring back some of the old golden Buzz-Billy rivalry as they compete who can do a better showy kiss with their respective brides. [Minute 2] Mel brings Sarah and a set of papers for joint custody. Buzz asks Alex for a dance. (Kind of asking a lot because he almost married her just a couple of years ago, but they all seem fine with it.) Lillian tells Alan how proud she is of him a very nice beat putting a coda on their always special relationship. [Minute 4]

Matt shows up to pick up Maureen. This is not a good day for him. He still cares about Vanessa. Both Vanessa and Maureen ask him to stay at the wedding reception and he finally agrees. Maureen seems incredibly well adjusted to the fact that her mother is marrying another man. She even dances with Billy and tries to set Matt up. [Minute 5] Maureen, Nola, and Bridget have a conversation with Matt and then they go to do a family dance. [Minute 9] Josh (to Bill): “I’ve never seen my brother so happy.” … Bill: “Lots of ups and downs, huh? Weddings, Funerals, Weddings, It’s like the good is outnumbering the bad and everything is coming together. Everyone’s life is looking good.” Josh continues this conversation in the same vein later with Billy. He reports that Marah is “doing great” which I don’t believe for a second, unless Real Tony is still alive out there and she found him. Josh feels that he’s the only one whose life isn’t going great and he’s thinking about going back down to Venezuela and check on Lewis Oil operations down there, but not permanently. [Minute 10] Josh tells Olivia he’s leaving town and thanks her for being his friend. He talks with Shayne about where they are in their lives. [Minute 18] Josh and Frank give best man speeches. [Minute 32]

Blake has a nice moment with Frank, discussing romance. [Minute 9] Cyrus kisses Mel while she eagerly responds. [Minute 17] Josh and Reva dance and he tells her his idea about leaving. [Minute 29] Josh has a conversation with Olivia thanking her for being his friend, which she really was. They were much better friends than they ever were a romantic couple.

Daisy and James are little apart. Daisy doesn’t want to watch her grandparents making out. James is still upset that Phillip wouldn’t let him be the donor to save his life. [Minute 6] They duck out. [Minute 21] They grab some food and have a picnic. [Minute 31] Everyone else is doing the Electric Slide. Jonathan brings in Sarah and takes her to Lizzie. He announces his decision to stay in town and share custody. [Minute 8] Jonathan and Lizzie take Sarah to meet all of Lizzie’s family, including Alan. Phillip proudly says he’s her grandfather, Beth: “I’m your Mommy’s Mommy that makes me….Beth.” [Minute 20] Alan has a moment with James and tries to explain to James why Phillip couldn’t let James risk his life. [Minute 11] Alan tells Rafe about his draft dodging past and tells him how proud he is of Rafe. Rafe is leaving this very day. [Minute 13] Reva and Alan have a nice conversation, more remembering the times they almost married, rather than the stupid vendetta mess. They really make a connection and toast to their mutual grandbaby Sarah. [Minute 14]

Well, here’s the Y& R crossover. If they drove all the way to New Jersey for this it wasn’t worth it from a character/plot point a view, although it was a great gesture. They are NOT in their Y&R characters. “Catherine” doesn’t have a name and “Michael” is her young gigolo, Justin. I must admit he does that pretty well though. Vanessa knows them from somewhere else. It would make sense if it was from when she and Matt lived in Europe, but it is left unspecified just “all this way.” [Minute 11]

Beth tells Phillip she doesn’t intend to hold him to what he said about loving her in the hospital. Phillip: “Was that you? I thought I was talking to Rick.” He insists he does love her, but doesn’t push it right then. [Minute 12] Billy announces that Phillip was sick, but that Alan had risked his life to save Phillip. The entire town congratulates Alan on being a hero and they toast him. [Minute 15] Phillip thanks Alan for his second chance, Alan tells him not to waste a second of it. [Minute 21] Buzz and Alan have a nice conversation. Buzz (to Alan): “You must feel like king of the world.” Alan: “I always feel like king of the world.” The friendship part of their relationship is still on top and they admit how much it has meant to both of them.  Alan: “No, you go on. I think I’m going to stay out here a few more minutes and take in this beautiful scene.” [Minute 27] Phillip finds Beth collecting shells for a still life. Beth talks about how she thinks about painting, but never seems to find time to paint again. Phillip finds the strength for once to just follow his heart without over thinking. He asks Beth to marry him and she says yes. They are both so happy they can’t stop laughing. [Minute 25] Phillip finds Alan and told him about Beth and the engagement. He thanks him for all he has done. Then he realizes Alan is ominously still. Phillip is amazing in this scene. [Minute 34]

Note: Justin Deas (Buzz Cooper) was holding off on hip replacement surgery until after filming wrapped. Hence he’s having trouble walking.

Dylan Lewis and Bridget Reardon

August 20, 2012

Another one of my favorite couples was Dylan Lewis and Bridget Reardon Lewis. They came back for the finale, so the people who just watched at the end might also appreciate a little bit of a background who they are because its been a REAL long time. First, a little background. When Harley Cooper Davidson was first introduced she was pregnant. She had the baby who she named Daisy (after the daisies the baby’s father used to bring her) and gave her up for adoption, eventually the baby was adopted by the LeMays. The baby’s father had abandoned her and she took older brother Frank’s advice to pretend her baby never existed. She got into a foursome with Dinah Marler (version 1.0), Alan-Michael Spaulding, and Cameron. It was a lite version trying to recapture some of the Four Musketeer magic. Alan-Michael and Harley married. They said it was to get access to his trust fund, but there were real feelings there they were afraid to admit. They had finally admitted the feelings to each other and were in a good place when Dylan showed up.

It turned out that Dylan hadn’t abandoned Harley. He had been arrested and convicted of armed robbery and had been in jail. At the time he wasn’t literate (he suffered from dyslexia) so he couldn’t write. So now armed with this new piece of information Dylan and Harley start out to find their daughter and pursue getting custody returned to them. The LeMays had renamed her Susan (when she later shows up at Harley’s house as teenager, this is what she calls herself, they only reverted to Daisy with yet another recast and her second coming to Springfield where she played out pretty much the exact same story as she did the first time with nastier people). Alan-Michael is threatened by this new closeness between Harley and Dylan and with reason. His reaction is out of proportion though and he ends up kidnapping Daisy in order to give her back to Harley. This creates a huge mess and ends up creating the situation he feared most and Harley divorces him. Dylan and Alan-Michael both had to do community service as firemen from the fallout (which actually resulted in some pretty good scenes and was very lucky during the Great 5th Street fire when both men volunteered). Eventually the Lemays move out of state and take Susan/Daisy with them where there is no further contact until she is a teenager.

Dylan’s next surprise comes in the form of half an old baby blanket Reva finds in her things during one of her many moves. She remembers a baby. It starts to come out and she tries to lie about it and say her secret involved being raped, but really the baby was Billy’s and she had sought comfort from him in Josh’s absence sooner than anyone else had realized. She had hidden the baby and Sarah, probably with all her practice from giving away Cassie herself, got the baby placed for adoption. Dylan’s adoptive mother had died and the way he found out left him with severe claustrophobia. His adoptive father reacted poorly to the mother’s death and he became abusive. Dylan started to bond with Reva and then she found his birthmark and discovered he was her son.

http://www.soapcentral.com/gl/whoswho/dylan.php

Dylan had romances with Phillip’s biological sister Samantha Marler and Mallet’s sister Julie. All the while he was a strong friend to Bridget Reardon.  Bridget was Matt’s little sister and the niece of Maureen, Nola, Jim, Tony, etc. Matt and Bridget were two of the kids of  Bea Reardon’s oldest son. Bridget Reardon was by turns obnoxious and a spunky heroine. She was known for causing the Springfield Blackout that trapped Jenna and Michelle in the elevator by turning on every electrical device she owned including her hair dryer during brown out conditions. She wanted Hart, but Hart was in love with Mallet’s younger sister Julie. One night Bridget got Hart drunk and took him to a haystack. They had sex and she conceived Peter. When her plan to get Hart away from Julie didn’t work (yes, Hart was stupid enough to get into the same exact set up TWICE), Bridget made a deal with Nadine. Billy had married Nadine while drunk and stayed with her because Nadine encouraged him to keep drinking. (She really didn’t care that much about Billy, she viewed him as a meal ticket.) When Nadine realized Billy was getting ready to make a break from her, she faked a pregnancy to keep him. Then she had to produce a baby so she made her deal with Bridget who she hid in the attic for the remainder of her pregnancy. Nadine passed off little Peter as her and Billy’s child, but the truth came out. This broke up Billy and Nadine and eventually led to Billy shooting Roger Thorpe to try to keep him away from Peter which led to Billy serving time in jail (a couple years he was off the show– Man, that was a return episode when he came back, he threw himself a party at the country club and you didn’t know it was him until he made his grand entrance, the current scribes should have watched it and taken notes, grumble, grumble). It also led to a nasty custody fight. It ended up in a complicated shared custody arrangement with Vanessa being giving the honorary title of “Peter’s Second Mother.” They all were actively involved in Peter’s rearing, until Bridget took him and left town to marry Dylan and move away from Springfield. Dylan returned to town for family functions a few times over the years, but neither Bridget nor Peter ever returned after leaving. An unpopular Dylan recast returned in 2007 saying that he and Bridget had divorced, but he never caught on with viewers and after Harley left the show, he gradually faded from sight.

Dylan and Bridget were great together. I never really cared for any of their other pairings, but during all of them they supported and helped each other. They always turned them to each other in times of trouble. Together they were a strong team and I was so glad when they finally got together and left with a supportive, positive relationship with someone who really understood them. Dylan’s original portrayer once said in an interview that Dylan wasn’t a real guy, he was every woman’s ideal of what a guy should be which really depressed me at the time. I wanted a guy as understanding, considerate, and romantic as Dylan. Clearly he was wrong (that ideal would be Danny Santos), but I have to admit Dylan would be a second, not a close second, but a second. ;-) I was very disappointed that they’d broken them up over that stupid recast and was very glad they at least seemed to be moving towards reconciliation at the Vanilly wedding.

UPDATED April 23 2016: I didn’t really change this at all except to add the signature block.

Melissa Hayden (Bridget Reardon Lewis) gave a short interview to Dec. 28, 2010 Soap Opera Digest about her role on The Young and Restless. It was great to see Hayden on our screens again and even better promise that she will most likely be back when this whole baby broker story falls apart. It’s kind of scary that some 20 years later, she’s playing a variation of her most famous GL storyline, and she still looks convincing doing it.

A Season of New Beginnings – Chapter 5 by Robansuefarm

A Season of New Beginnings – Chapter 5 by Robansuefarm

Her cousin Bridget Reardon Lewis had come from Minnesota in honor of such a big night. This time she had thought that for once it was everyone else’s turn to wear pink as it was the color of every dress in the small side room, besides her own.

Abby was gone now have followed Pilar out from behind the curtains.

Michelle once again mentally added the words to the music, “Here comes the bride…”

Her aunt Hillary Bauer was front and center. There was Vanessa and Billy Lewis beside Mindy and Rusty Shayne.

It was like he had lived most of his life missing part of himself and know he’d found it, found her.

Father Tomas began, “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to join together in matrimony Daniel Santos and Berta Michelle Bauer….”

Goodbye My Friend – Maureen’s Death

March 21, 2010

For Manny fans watch these clips to: see Michelle cope with the worst tragedy in her life, see Ross and Ed be best friends instead of just hearing that they were, understand Michelle and Holly’s relationship, and see the connection between Michelle and A-M or why she should have gotten to talk to him at the last scene in the bar in Nov. 2005, even if it would have upset stupid Marina.

ClassicGL aka Kahlil Lowry was hit by a car and was killed 10/31/2008. His family made the decision to keep his Guiding Light Memory Project going. We thank him for his efforts. While his versions might not be the most complete available on YouTube, the range of stories he covers is unusually thorough. Today I’m sharing links to his version of the story of Maureen Reardon Bauer’s death. I’ve added one additional clip and if I find better copies or copies at all of crucial scenes currently not listed below, like the affair itself or Michelle asking Roger Thorpe to stay at the visitation because he was his mother’s friend (see I’m not just whistling Dixie about her attracting trouble) or Holly ripping  into Ed when she learns exactly what happened, I will revisit this critical aspect to the Manny story and really to all of Springfield history.

NOTE: There are many clips linked to below, but they are only a few minutes each (almost all less than 5 minutes). Scroll past the storyline and comments for links.

The Storyline:

In one of the worst mistakes in Guiding Light history, Michelle’s mother Maureen Reardon Bauer was killed. Lillian Raines was preforming a routine monthly check of her breasts and found a lump. Ed supported her during her fight against breast cancer. At the same time, Ed was resentful of the time and energy Maureen was putting into her new job at Spaulding Enterprises. One night Ed and Lillian slept together and that might have been the end of it, but Lillian wrote Ed (one of her friend’s husbands) a thank you letter completely spelling out the affair. Maureen found this letter and left Ed over his repeated infidelity. She probably would have forgiven him eventually, as she had for several previous affairs, but he just kept insisting that she had to forgive him now. Disgusted Maureen took off upset and in poor driving conditions and her car crashed. She makes it to the hospital, but dies soon after and they are unable to revive her. She was an organ donor and her heart was transplanted into Jesse Blue at Ed’s request (we learn this much later). The hole in the canvas resulting from Maureen’s death is never fully filled as TPTB throw away the perfect opportunity to move Manny in the central couple position of tying nearly everyone on the canvas together once held by Ed and Maureen, which would not have fixed the mistake, but would have filled an important and long empty spot on the canvas.

Scroll below the links for in-depth explanations of Eve Guthrie’s presence and Rick’s absence.

Running Comments:

The following is a running commentary from watching the clips. This took place in 1993. The furniture in the kitchen had changed slightly by 1998. Those awful, ugly vegetable prints were on the wall already though. I kind of wish when Danny was shot he would have gotten blood on them instead of the floor so they’d had to get rid of them.

Although Ed and Eve were later married, at this point they are only friends. It was Lillian that Ed’s most recent affair had been with. Vanessa was Maureen’s best friend that’s why Ed checked with her to see if Maureen had called her. Vanessa and Maureen were one of the truly great GL friendships. When Jenna’s ghost visits Vanessa, Vanessa tells her she feels like she only ever had two true friends (Jenna and Maureen) and now they were both gone. Even while Ed’s calling looking for her, it’s already too late, Maureen will never step foot in the Bauer house again. Ed calls Blake, his former step-daughter who was currently living in the apartment above the garage to check if she’s heard from Maureen.

Vanessa understands why Maureen died, which is why she’d never  would have shared her wedding with Lillian. Sorry Lillibuzz fans, it rang false. Oh, if only Maureen had gone with Vanessa. “Write her another letter.”  – Maureen found out because Lillian wrote Ed a thank-you letter for the affair. (I mean a THANK YOU letter! And Tina Sloan wonders why people never got over it?!)

Ed changed his name from his childhood name of Billy to Ed to distance himself from his father because of his drinking and womanizing. However, he copied both in all of his marriages. Michelle plays an important part in this story. She sees Ed and Lillian together (though not during the act itself). Michelle heard Maureen crying when she left. Maureen tells Ed she can’t put up with his infidelity and lies for Michelle. “That’s not good enough for my daughter.” I think Maureen would have eventually forgiven Ed because she loved him warts and all and as she says this wasn’t a surprise. I don’t think she could break away. She just needed time and space, but Ed was so self-absorbed , he insisted she had to forgive him right then.

Maureen only got pregnant that we know of once. It was a year or two before Michelle was born. Maureen considered Michelle her daughter, but never gave up on having another child with Ed. That’s what she was doing with the book about getting pregnant that Ed finds in the car.

The worst part of the whole thing about Ed’s affair with Lillian was that it wasn’t even the direct cause of Maureen’s accident, it was that he kept pushing her to forgive him right now. If Ed could only have trusted in their love and given her some space, she’d have come back to him. She always did, but unfortunately that’s Ed.

This is important to the Manny story because this is all Michelle can think about when Carmen tells her Danny slept with Drew. In fact the very line Maureen tells Ed she fears Michelle will learn from his behavior is what Danny says right before he sleeps with Drew, thinking Michelle doesn’t love him.

For all his skill as a doctor, Ed can’t save everybody. Rick’s mother Leslie (then Ed’s ex-wife) also died in a car accident (although that was a hit and run). Here Ed tries to put Maureen’s purse back together instead because that is something he can fix.

I’m still not sure where the Nick and Eve relationship is at this point, but that must be what Nick is doing there. Vanessa is Maureen’s best friend (again why there is NO WAY under heaven she would have shared her wedding with Lillibuzz). Alan-Michael is Ed’s great-nephew (which is kind of funny because after SORAS-ing, A-M is much older than Michelle, but an entire generation younger, it’s his mother Hope that is Michelle’s first cousin).  Ed does pay his penance, how would you like to work everyday where your spouse died when it was your fault?

Eve was a good doctor, a total whackadoodle, but a good doctor. That must have really hurt Vanessa to say Nadine was very nice and it was out of character. Lillian on the other hand is still totally self-centered and if she did live with guilt, she didn’t show it too often, and she certainly deserved it. Ed also is putting the whole thing in terms of his needs and desires even as Maureen is on her deathbed. It’s just soooo Ed.

Bridget is in the attic because she is pregnant with Hart’s baby off a one-night stand (yep, Prince Charming did that twice) and when she realized he still wouldn’t marry her she made a deal to basically sell her baby to Nadine so Nadine could keep up the pretense that she was pregnant with Billy’s child which was really the only thing holding their marriage together since she had to get Billy drunk to get him to marry her in the first place. They came up with a lie that Bridget was going on a sort of service learning trip to Appalachia to explain why they never saw her and why she wasn’t in contact with them. That’s the class trip they keep talking about and why they would be trying to contact Bridget through Springfield University.

“What is she [Michelle] supposed to believe? Certainly not in words that people say to each other that they call vows because they don’t mean anything.”

“The Hell with it.” – Ironically enough the very line Danny says right before he sleeps with Drew which is what Maureen is afraid here will be what Michelle learns about love from her father.

“That’s not good enough for my daughter and its certainly not good enough for me. God Ed, what were you thinking? How could you have let this happen? You have broken my heart.” – Maureen’s last words

Why Eve is there:

Eve Guthrie had previously dated Nick McHenry in Europe. She came to town and stalked him for awhile and then they dated for awhile as her behavior became more and more outrageous. Ed helped determine that an incident from her past had caused a psychotic break and miraculously was able to quickly overcome it. Eve and Ed became close friends. Most people in town continued to treat her with kid gloves because while she was no longer violent she still leaned heavily toward the whackadoodle in her behavior. Ed and her quickly grew closer, partly because they both felt like outcasts. Less than a year after Maureen’s death they became engaged. It was then Eve was diagnosed with a quickly developing cancer and while both Rick and Ed tried to find a cure in time, eventually Ed agreed to turn off the life support on a comatose Eve. This second “widowing” within two years, as well as his continued guilt over Maureen’s death, is what pushed Ed to leave Springfield to go off and atone by helping to “save the world.” Unfortunately, it also meant that Ed once again abandoned his children when they needed him most.

Why Rick isn’t there:

Rick, as he later tells Michelle repeatedly, was very close to his step-mother Maureen. If it was real life, undoubtedly both Rick and his best friend Phillip, would have been at the funeral right along with all those Reardons TPTB didn’t actually want to pay to come back so attended “off screen.” However, at this point both Rick and Phillip have “moved out of town” (see my soap opera jargon page).  Previously, Beth had returned from the dead in the company of an odd architect named Neil. She was suffering amnesia about her past and was mute due to a psychosomatic reaction to the event (she thought she killed a man who was trying to rape her) that triggered her disappearance and amnesia. Things were working out, she was talking again, she had regained her memory, and was back with Phillip when Neil, angry that he’d lost her to Phillip, committed suicide in such a way as to frame Phillip for his death. As the 4 Musketeers strove to prove Phillip’s innocence, Rick had married a pregnant with Lizzie Beth to convince people Phillip was really gone and Rick had stolen a corpse from hospital that they set up to be identified as Phillip. Eventually Phillip was cleared, but the crimes they committed while trying to prove it came back to haunt them and both Phillip and Rick were forced to leave Springfield, basically as part of their probation. Phillip and Beth moved to Arizona where they happily raised Lizzie until Phillip learned that it was a family member that insured he be exiled to Arizona and he returned to find out who it was and seek revenge. Rick went to Chicago where the temporary revocation of his medical license helped push him to a pill addiction for the second time in his life and toward marriage with a, pre-driven crazy by Jeva, nurse named Annie Dutton who later followed Rick to Springfield.

UPDATE: Showing just how much impact and how many shockwaves this story set off, the March 2, 2010 issue of Soap Opera Digest has two articles about soap opera deaths and both feature a prominent mention of Maureen’s death, 17 years after it happened and 11 months after the cancellation of GL was announced.

David Grant

February 18, 2010

David Grant – During David Grant’s initial run from 1992-1996, he was the black sheep of the Grant family, determined to clear his name and make his father proud of him. His sister was TV reporter Gilly Grant. His father was Dr. Charles Grant who eventually became chief administrator at Cedars. His mother was social climber Vivian Grant. During his first residency in Springfield, he’d served time for a crime he committed and was tried for a murder he did not commit. He was well liked in the community and was especially close to Bridget Reardon, Lucy Cooper Spaulding, and Buzz Cooper. His best known storyline during this time was his star crossed romance with Kat Speakes which brought him in conflict with her father Hampton Speakes, Billy Lewis’s best friend during his football heyday, who also married David’s sister Gilly.

David returned in 1998, but never really found a throughline during this second run. He’d already made a good name for himself and proven himself with his father. Mission accomplished, but the character never seemed to find another ongoing goal and didn’t seem to connect with people he had been close to his first time on the canvas (many of them Gilly, Bridget, Lucy, Kat, and Hampton had also left town).

Originally brought back to take Jenna’s place at Harley’s detective agency, David eventually becomes Frank’s partner at the SFPD. They tried a brief romantic pairing with Dehlia, Michelle’s best female friend, before she left town. When that fell through they paired him with Vicki Spaulding, which was the most memorable part of his second run in Springfield. The writers had several obstacles involving their different social status and her concern over the danger his job put him in, but the romance flamed out and another effort at romance with Reva’s latest protege, Ruth Lockhart, fell through and he left the show.

Most inexplicable during this second run was his attitude toward Michelle. While David had known Michelle for a good portion of her life and their fathers and her older brother were all good friends and he’d always been friendly with Michelle, once Michelle married Danny, David came to view her as a Santos and therefore an enemy. David had a personal grudge against the Santos family feeling that Mick’s threats to get Dr. Grant to buy supplies and equipment for Cedars through a Santos backed source had caused his father’s stroke. Which was pretty weak considering he’d already had health indicators before that and maybe having to continually deal with the Griffin Williams, now a judge and community leader who traveled in the same social circle, who’d had an affair with his wife and unbeknownst to him for many years, fathered Gilly who Charles had thought was his daughter, just might have contributed as well. This grudge against the Santos family caused David to blow hot and cold for years sometimes going after Manny with a vengeance, sometimes actually helping them. Eventually David not only got both Danny and Michelle in trouble with the law, but he even went after Frank because he helped Manny spend Christmas eve together when Michelle was in jail.

David was last heard from in 2003 when Harley contacted him to help get her some information when he was working as a private detective in Paris, France. She didn’t say whether he and Vicki had reunited or not. (However, in real life the actor and actress who played David and Vicki met on the show and are happily married. David’s last portrayer has said on record that prejudice led the GL writers not to write story for him, but this was not an issue during David’s 1st run. David had simply lost his throughline and never got another, as a result there wasn’t any story for him. The same thing happened to the white character Rob Layne about the same time and he flamed out even earlier.)
