Guiding Light Cast Roundup 80

March 15, 2018

This is the eightieth in an irregular feature where we will report updates on what cast members of Guiding Light are doing now. I’m playing catch up on some soap magazine news. So as a reminder you can buy back issues:

The 20th Anniversary of Beautiful Women photo roundup in the June 26, 2017 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth included Cynthia Watros (Annie Dutton #1), Gina Tognoni (Dinah Marler #4), Karla Mosley (Christina Boudreau), and Crystal Chappell (Olivia Spencer).

The 20th Anniversary of Handsome Men photo roundup in the August 7, 2017 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth. They included Paul Anthony Stewart (Danny Santos) – and an uncommon photo at that, sigh, Tom Pelphrey (Jonathan Randall #2) and, Matt Boomer (Ben Reade #3, who paired with Marina Cooper).

A roundup in the February 5, 2018 issue of Soap Opera Digest names their choice for the best story ever told on each soap. Guiding Light is represented by the Nola Reardon/Kelly Nelson/Floyd Parker/Morgan Richards storyline. As the World Turns is represented by the Kim Hughes-Douglas Cummings stalker storyline. (Both stories featured John Wesley Shipp.)

Bethany Joie Lenz (Michelle Bauer Santos #4, part of Stenz Manny) will be in a new recurring role on Grey’s Anatomy this season.

Both Lenz and Brittany Snow (Daisy Susan LeMay Cooper #2 – during Susan’s first return) were photographed at the 24th Annual Screen Actors Guild Award. Check out the photos in the March 5, 2018 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

Don Stewart (Michael Bauer #6) was reported in the October 1972 issue of Daytime TV that “has been drawing hordes of fans whenever he sings (baritone) in night clubs. And after every performance, he sits in the lobby to sign autographs and greet fans personally.”

Rick Hearst (Alan-Michael Spaulding #3) announced he was going to be on the 12th episode of this season of the Dynasty reboot. Read more and see a photo in the December 4, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Ellen Dolan (Maureen Reardon Bauer #1, Michelle’s adopted mom) was the subject of a feature in the March 5, 2018 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth looking back on her roll as Margo Hughes on As the World Turns and the epic ToMargo coupling with Tom Hughes.

The March 5, 2018 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth‘s All-Star Scrapbook Marj Dusay (Alexandra Spaulding) and Crystal Hunt (Lizzie Spaulding Lewis #5 brought in Roxie the dog and romanced Coop)

Melina Kanakaredes (Eleni Cooper #1) is a regular on a new medical series called The Resident. Her character’s name is Dr. Lane Hunter.

The December 4, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest gives a collection of most shocking returns including Michael Zaslow (Roger Thorpe) and Anthony Herrera (James Stenbeck on As the World Turns).

In the October 1972 issue of Daytime TV they describe Zaslow playing in the Broadway production of Fiddler on the Roof for a year. He’d been wearing himself out and losing weight so he’d left in June 1972.

Allison Janney (Ginger, one of Jenna’s comic relief maids while she owned the Spaulding Mansion) won a SAG award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in the mockumentary, I, Tonya. See a photo in the March 5, 2018 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth. Janney commented on the Harvey Weinstein controversy.

Wes Ramsey (Sam Spencer, Olivia’s brother) came to General Hospital in times for November 2017 sweeps.

This fall Kassie DePaiva (Chelsea Reardon, Maureen and Nola’s little sister) returned to Days of Our Lives character Eve Donovan after a bout with leukemia. Read more about it with the November 6, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Vincent Irizarry (Lujack Spaulding and his sudden brother Nick McHenry) returned to Days of Our Lives last fall after his character’s death for recreated flashbacks. Read about it in the November 6, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Warren Burton (hospital administrator and Black Orchid restauranter, Warren Andrews whose greedy plan with the Dreaming Death lead to his wife’s death) has passed away at the age of 72. Burton’s death was reported by We Love Soaps and passed on to me by .

Emme Rylan (Lizzie Spaulding Lewis #6, part of the wonderful Bizzie pairing) had baby number three, a daughter, on June 26, 2017. Read more in the July 24, 2017 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

From the October 1972 issue of Daytime TVChristopher Walken, who played Michael Bauer as a boy on the radio version of The Guiding Light, is in the new movie, The Happiness Cage.”

Laura Wright (Cassie Layne Winslow #1) talks about the problem she had playing Cassie staying with Edmund after finding out he’d artificially inseminated Dinah. Read all she said in the December 4, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest. Cassie and Edmund’s beautiful wedding is featured in a roundup of photos in the

Judi Evans (Beth Raines #1) is the feature about her new double role on Days of Our Lives. Read it in the August 7, 2017 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth. She also was in a feature article about it in the September 11, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

The October 1972 issue of Daytime TV reported: “I’ve been trying to locate Lyle Sudrow, who played Bill Bauer on The Guiding Light until he was succeeded by Ed Bryce. And I’m told by Theo Goetz (Fredrich “Papa” Bauer on TGL) that he believes Lyle is in Hollywood, working in a helicopter factory.”

Lawrence Saint-Victor (Remy Boudreau, one of the last great couples on the show with Christina) and his real life wife Shay are pictured at the Daytime Emmys. See it in the June 26, 2017 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth. Saint-Victor hasn’t been on The Bold and the Beautiful since August, but he was back filming in mid-November.
Saint-Victor also has a short interview about his recent storyline on The Bold and the Beautiful in the February 5, 2018 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Karla Mosley has also gotten a side job. Mosley will “headline a fashion show by Gert-Johan Coetzee, a highly regarded fashion designer from South Africa. Karla will be walking the runway for him during a special show that will take place on October 26 during South African Fashion Week….Her co-stars Jacob Young (Rick Forrester) and Heather Tom (Katie Logan).”

The October 1972 issue of Daytime TV reported that Fran Myers (Peggy Fletcher) has been dating Roger Newman (Ken Norris on the same show). It was early days, but they were married until his death in 2010.

Gina Tognoni (Dinah Marler #4) is featured in an article in the June 26, 2017 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth because of her frontburner story on The Young and the Restless where her character has just moved in with her recently ex-husband’s brother.

Laura Bell Bundy (Marah Lewis #5, the one who started Marony) recently appeared on the October 21, 2017 episode of Good Behavior.

Kim Zimmer (Reva Shayne Lewis) and Robert Newman (Josh Lewis) are reunited in a production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? It’s a workshop in Nantucket. Workshop’s sometimes go on to regional or Broadway runs, other times they disappear. Here’s wishing them a long run.
The September 11, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest includes a set of photos of female imposters including Dolly aka Cleva aka Clone Reva. The shot is one of her in the replica of the Cross Creek wedding dress.
Zimmer‘s Reva and Wendy Moniz (Dinah Marler #3) characters were on a list of people with their own sense of style in the July 24, 2017 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

Ricky Paull Goldin (Gus Aitoro) had their second son, Rio, on June 12, 2017. Read more in the July 24, 2017 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

In November 1971, Daytime TV reported that Chris Sarandon who played Tom Halverson on The Guiding Light has been touring with the play Othello.

Reported in the November 1971 issue of Daytime TV that Barbara Rodell (Leslie Bauer Norris, Rick’s mother, Ed and Mike’s ex-wife) and her husband Cy Epstein had just had their first child, a boy named Jonathan.

Nick McHenry and Susan Marry We Learn Henry Is Dead Feb 19 1996 and Some Undated Days

January 25, 2018

I had a long gap I had to figure out, but picking up the continued story with episodes broken into dates here we are again. I started going through and breaking Bandstand Mike’s episodes into dates. This run started on December 20, 1995. Our last post in the series ended February 16, 1996.

This is a wonderful week with some pretty terrific stuff every day. Annie is forced by the custody battle to move back to her old apartment. Some of her friends show up to throw her a “Reva will get hers” party. Rick tells Josh some hard truths about Annie including that Rick wants her back. Alex is gleeful at the news Alan and Reva broke up. Buzz is trying to cheer Reva up and Josh has an evil plan to handle Reva, but will it backfire? Between the stock he gave Amanda and the $10 million ransom that was lost Alan doesn’t have a lot left. A-M invites him back to Spaulding, but Alan is afraid that he wouldn’t be happy at Spaulding at less than the presidency and the temptation to take it back might be too much. Reva disrupts the Spaulding dinner in an effort to try and get Alan back, but no dice. We get a romantic and pretty hot LAM sequence. Nick McHenry and Susan Bates marry at the Spaulding Mansion. Everyone receives word that Henry Chamberlain has died. Michelle had a fight with J and now wants to leave town rather than see him again. David and Bridget argue over her being hung up on Hart and he confesses he loves her. Hart has decided to stay in town and expose Roger’s misdeeds towards Dinah, asking for help from Alan and Gilly. Meanwhile Roger desperately struggles to cover his embezzlement. Quint comes back to town bimbo in tow. Marah reacts badly to the custody fight and runs away. The entire 5th Street neighborhood comes together in an effort to find her. Griffin helps out and Gilly begins to think maybe she was wrong about him. (Nope. She was right on the money after her mother talked to her.) Marah shows up at Reva’s house and intends to stay there. She has brought along stuff she stole to remind her of Annie.

Monday, February 19, 1996

Ed takes Annie back to face her apartment and leaving the Land of Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams. The Spauldings are gathering and Alex is gleeful that Alan says he’s done with Reva. Buzz is trying to get Reva out of her funk. Josh has some evil plan to handle Reva.

Reva asks Buzz for a job which considering her previous jobs doesn’t make a lot of sense, but OK.  Buzz agrees despite the fact that Elanie grabs him and drags him away saying they don’t have enough work for it — despite the fact they are normally short handed. Josh asks Rick to check in on Annie and Rick explodes that he can’t do that. But that just goes to show how thoughtless Josh is.

The party is a great idea. I get why Lillian would be there, but why Vanessa? Sure she’d like to complain about Reva and for some reason despite her troubles with Billy Vanessa stayed close to Josh, but Annie? During the girl talk Lillian sort of admits to having a thing for Ed and when Annie suggests wrapping herself in plastic and making a move on Josh. Vanessa says tinfoil is better because it tears easier. I kind of love that. Rick tells Josh some hard truths. Vanessa says her cook made the dinner so they must have one and Annie and Josh have Mary as a nanny. The Spauldings are enjoying a great dinner.

Alan is called from the dinner table and says he lost all $10 million dollars and with the gift he made to Amanda of Spaulding stock he doesn’t have much left. Alan says he regrets neither the gift of stock, nor using the money in an attempt to get Alan-Michael and Lucy back. Alex is shocked. Alan-Michael invites Alan back into the company. Alan refuses saying he learned he wouldn’t be happy in a supporting role and he doesn’t intend to take the presidency back, but he knows the temptation would be too much at Spaulding. Everyone is surprised. Reva bursts in.

The Spaulding family run out leaving Alan and Reva alone. Reva tells Alan the custody battle news and asks Alan to come back. Alan says no, he thinks she’s still hung up on Josh. Reva gets mad he won’t come and takes off. Rick and Josh face off over their treatment of Annie. Rick is living in the Bauer garage apartment. Abby walks in on the conflict.

Rick confesses he still has feelings for Annie to Abby. Considering the future, watching Rick explain divorce to Abby is heartbreaking. Just heartbreaking.

Apparently A-M and Lucy have adopted a dog named Faith that they hid under the table at the Spaulding dinner. A-M and Lucy talk about their wedding. Lucy wants a big wedding, but A-M says it doesn’t matter because he sees them as already married from their lighthouse ceremony. It’s just lovely. Elanie tries to talk sense to Buzz about Reva which doesn’t stick. Then we have a lovely Alan and Alexandra sibling talk. “To moving forward for all of us.”

We have a pretty romantic and hot LAM love scene. Rick continues to squirm under Abby’s questions about Annie and Hawk shows up encouraging Rick to make a play for Annie tonight. Meanwhile the girls night is breaking up with Lillian leaving Vanessa to do the dishes. Annie is convinced Josh is somewhere with Reva — which against all odds he actually is.

Tues., February 20, 1996

We’re getting ready for Nick and Susan’s wedding in the Spaulding Mansion. The guys are picking out a playlist and even Alan gets roped into the set up. Susan and Lucy have a you’re like a sister talk.

Amanda is expanded to the like a sister group and helps Susan get ready. Nick gives Alex a thank you with a subtext that I’m leaving soon, but she doesn’t get it. Susan’s AIDS support group shows up.

Nick McHenry and Susan Bates get married in the Spaulding living room. It’s a simple service and the guests stand as the bride and groom meet before the fireplace. Only a handful of people attend and they have only one attendant each, Alan-Michael Spaulding (the groom’s cousin) is the Best Man and Lucy Cooper is the Maid of Honor. The head of the AIDS group gives her away.

Nick and Susan announce they aren’t going to come back after the honeymoon, but intend to take a world tour exploring the world on an open ended trip. “For as long as we have.” Susan is diagnosed with AIDS, a step worse than her previous diagnosed HIV. The last time we heard from them on the show she was still alive.

Extra Day 1 – February 1996???

We seem to have skipped at least one episode somewhere. It seems like maybe more than one. That means I can’t establish the dates for the next few episodes and we missed some kind of important scenes. Part of why I was going through these particular clips was because with a solid starting date (the very special Christmas episode) I could give an exact date for the episodes. This stops that, but I should be able to pick it up again on March 1st.

Matt has told Vanessa how he’d be tied up with an escort service Amanda Spaulding ran out in California.  We must have already heard that Henry Chamberlain (Vanessa and Quint’s father, Nola’s father-in-law to whom she was quite close, Dinah, Little Billy, Anastasia and J. [Anthony James]’s grandfather, also an “adoptive” father to Jenna Bradshaw) has passed on or the audience wouldn’t already have understood he was dead when Nola starts talking to J about him in the past tense. Henry was a great guy. I’m sorry he’s gone. While I was working on my WSPR news stories, which I hope to be able to do more of sometime, I did a post that tied into the end of the series, the building of Henry Chamberlain Elementary.  In the actual series they only say they are building a new elementary school, but since they didn’t name it, I did.

We’re at WSPR with Roger and Gilly (who is a reporter/producer there) and Ross arrives to gloat that Roger needs to hand over Dinah’s money (which Roger actually has embezzled). Over at the Bauer House Ed seems in a very good place, but sadly as always with this version of Michelle she is being dopey. She’s following her normal storyline procedure I describe in the linked post above – this time with her adoptive cousin Jay. I know – ICK! right? The fans at the time thought so too and the pairing was dropped.

Roger tries to divert Ross from the divorce by painting Hart as a worse threat to Dinah which Hart overhears. Michelle continues to say she wants to leave town and is teenage hysterical.

J regrets taking Henry for granted the last time he saw him which was very natural. They discuss Quint coming back. David and Bridget come in and are sorry, but in what world were they anything to do with Henry? Matt fills Vanessa in on Henry’s death.

Matt expects Vanessa to put aside the fall out from his revelation until dealing with Henry’s death is over. Vanessa needs time to process and is having none of it. Good for her especially when Matt tries to lay a guilt card on her – “I need you too. I loved him too.” I mean self-centered much? Roger uses Henry’s death as a lever to get rid of Ross and delay handing over the accounts. He still hopes he can delay long enough to win Dinah back and keep control. Bridget and David talk about fixing up the boarding house and her obsession with Hart.

Hart and Roger fight. I think Roger is right about one thing. I think he does love Hart he was just already in a bad spot with him (having unintentionally caused his grandfather who had raised him’s death) and his attempts to fix it just made things worse. Gilly and Hart have a talk about Roger. Ed told Michelle to get a ride to school with Gale’s mother. I don’t remember Gale at all and we probably won’t see her today – we don’t. They are going to meet outside. Vanessa went over to tell Nola, but Nola had already heard somehow through Michelle. Vanessa and Nola had been rivals for attention when Nola and Quint had lived in Springfield, but they both loved Henry very much.

Nola: “[Vanessa] Are you OK?”

Vanessa: “Yes, yes, yes, yes.”

Nola: “I’m not….I’m glad you came by.”

Vanessa: “I know how much you loved my father…”

Nola: “I keep thinking about the craziest things. This one night we had an all night poker game. He accused me of bluffing and he never folded his hand.”

Vanessa with a smile: “That’s because he wanted you to win.”

Nola: “Yea, he did want me to win. Not too many people I can say that about. You were real lucky to have him.”

Vanessa wants to talk funeral arrangements. Nola breaks down she’s not ready yet.

Nola: “You can cry in front of me. We can cry together.”

David and Bridget argue over Hart and Bridget’s reactions to him. Roger breaks back into the suite and takes the real books and information about how he drained Dinah’s accounts. He asks Leo Flynn to make a set of dummy books and when Roger offers him his yearly salary for the two weeks work he accepts. Meanwhile Hart is getting information from Gilly that Roger cooked the books.

More icky cousin on cousin action. J tells Michelle some garbage and she eats it up with a spoon. Michelle to J: “See that’s what I mean about me not doing or saying the right thing. I mean in the first place I’m NOT that young. I went to SCHOOL IN EUROPE. I’m not a stupid little kid.” Now she’s in good with J again, Michelle is all over leaving. Ross and Matt talk about Vanessa. Matt proving once again he’s a junior partner in their relationship and that doesn’t know Vanessa as well as Ross does. Ross: “Vanessa didn’t always have the qualities you admire. It takes time and it’ll take time for you.” aka you’re immature. Ross thinks that Matt helped Vanessa get through her anger at Billy and Bridget and Dylan that was taking over her life. Nola keeps at Vanessa trying to get her to face her emotions. Vanessa has a list of pall bearers – the list of names doesn’t include Matt.

Roger reassures Leo they will be safe. Hart shows up to ask Alan for his help to nail Roger. Nola keeps urging Vanessa to let go, but Vanessa is maintaining her stiff upper lip. David tells Bridget he’s in love with her. Quint shows up at the Reardon Boarding House door.

Extra Day 2 – February 1996???

Marah has run away. People are gathering with Josh and Annie at the Land of Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams, and volunteers stop by the 5th Street Diner where Reva is keeping everybody full up with coffee. Quinton and Vanessa cling to their mutual loss.

Annie is sort of right and sort of wrong about Marah running away being Reva’s fault. Josh is frustrated and says he can’t just wait there he is going to do some random looking himself. Quint and Nola make nice and find forgiveness in their grief. Quint admits Nola was even closer to his father than he was. They talk about Henry’s reaction to their breakup since Henry has been “visiting” Quint between when the actor died and when the character died on screen.
Quint: “He said to me, I was always afraid you would be dissatisfied with a perfect marriage.”

Hart goes to Alan for help taking out Roger.
Amanda: “Father, don’t murder Hart unless you want to be involved in another costly legal battle.”

Alan about Hart: “You are a determined little flea, aren’t you.”
David tells Bridget he’s in love with her. Bridget and David continue to discuss his declaration. Gilly goes on air with an appeal to help find Marah. Reva won’t go on afraid it might make Marah run. Griffin shows up and Gilly thinks he’s just showing off, but when he goes looking himself Gilly thinks maybe she was wrong. Tina, the prostitute from New Years, shows up and offers her help too. Gilly wants to put Reva on camera to aid in search for Marah Lewis (who is 8). Reva thinks it would cause more problems. Tina was the prostitute who came in on New Year’s Eve and Eleni chased her out.

Holly and Fletcher are with Annie at the Land of Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams supporting Annie while Marah was gone. Annie unknowingly predicts the future that she and Josh will be together forever just like Holly and Fletcher (SPOILER: both couples will soon be toast). Josh finds Reva at the dinner (clearly something really important happened in between since we last saw them). Henry Chamberlain has died (more important stuff went down with the Reardons and Chamberlains that we didn’t see) and J walks in with Vanessa finding Quint and Nola embarrassing situation (SPOILER: do NOT get your hopes up Quola fans if they had to do this stupid affair stuff they could have gotten some decent interaction out of it. Nope not happening. Still resentful.). The grad student Quint was sleeping with shows up, everyone freaks and Quint can’t understand why.

They freak out.

J : “You almost had me going there professor for a second I was almost buying into you being my dad again. I even thought you looked good standing there hugging Mom. You know what I was saying to myself, maybe this guy has finally turned back into an adult, but you know what, NO you have to bring your Barbie doll girlfriend along from grad school.”

Quint: “I do NOT like the way you’re speaking to Jessica Do NOT use that tone of voice with your father.”

J : “Maybe if you acted like my dad, I could treat you like one all right.”

Vanessa is likewise appalled and freezing girlfriend Barbie out.

Amanda offers comfort to Alan because he’s upset about his relationship with Reva. Amanda give him advice: “If you really love someone, what good is pride anyway?”

Josh leaves and Reva feels faint from not eating.

Griffin talks Reva into eating to keep strong.  Gilly is thinking Griffin is putting on a show (which I think he totally is), but the search for Marah continues. The Journal is putting out a special edition. Josh makes it home to the Land of Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams. Word came a little girl matching Marah’s description was hit by a car.

Hart finds Bridget and says he wants Peter to be part of his life and he’d taken her words to heart. David freaks. Bridget shuts him down. J tries to comfort Nola about Quint. Vanessa tears into Quint over his bringing his mistress for the funeral. Reva returns to her house and discovers Marah is there waiting for her.

Extra Day 3 February 1996

Alan pushes into Company and we’ve already lost all the goodwill from working together to save LAM. Instead Buzz and Alan snarl at each other over Reva — who really be better off if she’d tell both of them to take a long walk off a short pier. Josh and Annie arrive at Cedars rushing into the emergency room where they find it was another little girl who was hurt (no name girl isn’t badly hurt so don’t worry about her). Marah tells Reva that she’s there to move in with Reva, but only if she’ll leave Josh and Annie alone.

Actually they are both right Buzz and Alan are making fools of themselves, fighting over which man wiill second and which third in Reva’s life.  Marah tells Reva that she did her chores. On a school morning she is responsible for making her bed and getting her own breakfast. Sounds like either Josh and Annie or the nanny aren’t doing their duty, she has to feed herself? Reva tries to figure out what’s going on. Marah takes this as an indication that Reva doesn’t want her living there and asked then why did Reva say she’d never stop fighting Josh. Rick and Lillian support Annie and Josh is angry Rick is taking an interest. Since Reva is back on Josh’s radar, if Josh wasn’t a jerk he’d step back, but he’s ready to set a course to crash Annie on the rocks instead.

And we get to see the Bauer House today. Yay! Michelle attempts to spread both poor body image AND poor nutritional advice to Abby. Can’t it be November 1998 in a hurry? Hold on Michelle you’re going to act stupid the next couple of years, but Danny is coming as a reward at the end. Abby has a romantic fantasy about Rick and a red dress. The wind machine in the Bauer kitchen is a nice touch. 🙂 Buzz is running off at the mouth. He has no idea what makes Alan tick. I’m not exactly who he thinks he’s describing here, but it’s not Alan. Reva tries to explain to Marah that she doesn’t understand. Marah’s misdirection tactic includes explaining that her nanny is named Mary and is from Dublin, Ireland.

Abby tells Michelle that she feels her Goshen clothes make people either laugh at her or ignore her. Rick and Michelle have an unproductive talk about dating. He tells her to let J alone (not by name) and she tells him Abby has a thing for him which Rick doesn’t believe. I think Reva should have called Josh, sent Marah upstairs for something if she doesn’t want to do it in front of her. Shayne comes down and has a nice conversation with Annie. Shayne sells Marah out telling Annie that Marah took the musicbox. Reva as always hears what she wants to when Marah talks to her.

Frank asks Buzz if he loves Reva. Frank says he knew Buzz and Nadine had something magic, but weren’t right together long term. What now? Alan showed up at Reva’s door before she could call Josh. Alan tells her he’s sorry, but already in Josh light again Reva is not interested and tells Alan to hit the road. Meanwhile Marah makes a sad little shrine to her former life. Shayne continues to spill his guts listing off what Marah took even though it was mostly “stupid girl stuff.”

Michelle tells Rick Abby has a crush on him. Rick says “Ya, right” and then Abby comes in dressed in modern clothes. Rick wants to talk Abby down. Little girl Marina is cute and fun. It’s really a shame Eleni took her to California and ruined her. I don’t know why they never gave Frank another committed relationship after this, he does them so well. Annie and Josh figure out that Marah had been collecting things to remember Annie by.

Rick tries to talk Abby down. Alan is remembering hard truths from Reva and Buzz. Reva discovers Marah has taken Annie’s things to remember her.

Guiding Light Cast Roundup 79

September 20, 2017

This is the seventy-ninth in an irregular feature where we will report updates on what cast members of Guiding Light are doing now. I’m playing catch up on some soap magazine news. So as a reminder you can buy back issues:

The January 30, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest published the Manny photo from Instagram.

Check out “The Guiding Light” pp 42-44 in Daytime TV Yearbook, no. 5 1974. It includes the cast at the time with individual photos and bios.

The November 4, 1986 issue of Soap Opera Digest featured an article on the effect of chaos and switching TPTB behind the scenes. They tell about what’s going on behind the scenes on Guiding Light in the mid-1980s.

I’m sure I mentioned this when this first came out, but I just came across the August 1, 2011 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth. In a feature on characters who get back together to characters after they really should know better, Manny get a page and a half and several photos.

The July 31, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest flashes back to what happened on all the soaps, including Guiding Light, in 1998. As any Manny fan knows the most important event that year was that Manny got its start. Also important was Michael Zaslow (the irreplaceable Roger Thorpe) was unceremoniously fired due to his advancing illness, Fiona Hutchinson (Jenna Bradshaw Cooper, Vanessa’s sort of sister, Buzz’s true love), Jay Hammer (long time reporter Fletcher Reade), Lisa Brown (Nola Reardon Chamberlain, of the Quola pairing), all left.

Bethany Joy Lenz (then credited as Joie Lenz) was on the red carpet for the premiere of HBO’s Big Little Lies. See a photo in the April 27, 2017 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

Daniel Cosgrove (Bill Lewis #4, part of the wonderful Bizzie pairing) talks about being an introvert in the July 25, 2016 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

Jane Elliot (Carrie Marler, Ross’ wife) has retired from her iconic soap role on General Hospital. Read more in the April 17, 2017 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

Find a photo of Jordi Vilasuso (Tony Santos #1 of Marony fame) is given a full page photo with a discussion of his diet in the July 25, 2016 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth. His character’s departure from Days of Our Lives means that there is a feature interview with Vilasuso in the August 7, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest. Since then has done two movies. Vilasuso did a quick short spot talking about what he has learned watching Justin Deas (Buzz Cooper) and A. Martinez on Days. It’s a nice little shot of how Deas worked. Find it in the March 21, 2016 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Laura Bell Bundy (Marah Lewis #5, the one who started Marony) married TBS excecutive Thom Hinkle in Arcadia, CA at the Santa Anita Park racetrack on June 3, 2017. Read about it in the June 26, 2017 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Jeva Custody Case 1996 Feb 12 16 1996

August 7, 2017

I started going through and breaking Bandstand Mike’s episodes into dates. This run started on December 20, 1995. Our last post in the series ended February 9 1996.

Rick confesses to Annie he still loves her and wants her back. Alan tells Reva to give up the custody fight or he’s leaving her. Reva picks her kids. With Alan out of the picture Buzz attempts to move in and ignores Hawk’s admonition that Reva and Josh will always find their way back to each other. The Jeva custody trial moves forward. LAM are back together and sorry to have missed their original wedding date and are in a hurry to arrange another. However, they aren’t as in as much of a hurry as Susan and Nick McHenry who will marry and move to Europe within the next week with little or no warning. Amanda is found locked in the construction shed and is dangerously ill. She’s rushed to the hospital meaning Alan has two children in the hospital right now. Dinah solidifies her friendship with Dinah – which is good they both could use a friend. Hart is still determined to leave town and heads for the bus station.

Monday, February 12, 1996

I think Amanda is right about Ross being furious and on her side if he would find her or find out about it, but why would he think to look for her? He thinks she left his office to go home. Rick confesses to Annie he doesn’t think she and Josh will make it and that he still loves her. Alan tells Reva give up the custody fight, make a deal, or he’s out of their relationship.

Reva tells Alan that she needs him in her life. Amanda makes a foolish decision and doesn’t ask the guard for help. That’s kind of awesome that Amanda figured how to get out.

Ross: “I waited a lifetime to find you.”

Blake: “And when you did you couldn’t get enough.”

Dinah and Amanda find each other at a bar and commiserate. Hart heads to the bus station.

Reva tells Alan she’s choosing her kids, she isn’t pursuing the kids just to keep a link with Josh. He still doesn’t believe her. He gives Reva the house. She says she won’t stay there, but she and Josh later live there. Ross discovers Blake left her birth control in the bathroom despite Ross specifically asking her to use it to take the stress off.

Ross is concerned about Blake. Dinah and Amanda are quickly becoming drinking buddies. Dinah: “If you can unseat the henna head more power to you!” (Henna is used for various things including red hair dye.) Ross believes Josh is devoted to Annie. He’s normally not this stupid.

Nice for Reva to have reached out to Dylan even if it’s off camera. Hawk really looked cold in that coat. Great acting job. Hawk tells Reva that he was staying with a friend and got kicked out when he burned down the coach. Hawk also confesses he blew through all of Miss Sarah’s money on gambling. Josh is supporting Miss Sarah now. Look at Reva and that handkerchief. She genuinely cared for Alan. It makes no sense considering how she treats him later. Good for Amanda not letting Dinah drive drunk.

“All the damage fear has done.” That’s a perfect song for Bloss right now. The quilt on their bed is Flying Geese pattern.

Tuesday, February 13, 1996

It’s a new day in Springfield. Buzz shows up to visit Reva and is ecstatic Reva and Alan have broken up.

Annie and Josh are concerned about the hearing today. That’s too bad that Dinah responded with snark. I think Blake is trying to be nice for once. Matt finally gets to work and finds a truly unconscious Amanda.

Marah is upset that Reva is doing something that has upset Annie and Josh. Hawk (about Jeva not reconciling immediately): “That doesn’t mean it’s open season for every Tom, Dick, or burger flipper.” Buzz and Hawk clash over Reva. Good for Reva to stand up as an independent woman.
Reva: “I’m not a little girl anymore and I’m not Snow White waiting for some prince to come save me.” Buzz is indulging in some wishful thinking here.

Hawk turns up to see Marah. He brings her a Barbie like doll with a cowgirl outfit. I agree with Hawk someone should explain things to Marah even if it really isn’t his place. Amanda is rushed to Cedars. It’s a rough day for Alan with two children in the hospital. I’d say 3 months is a couple of months. That was pretty picky. Rick is called to the witness stand. Althea brings up Annie’s alcoholism.

Ross cross examines Rick. Ed is called to the stand. He claims privileged information and refuses to answer even when threatened with a contempt of court charge. I think the counseling stuff should be covered, but having to physically take a bottle out of her hands is direct experience and I do think he should be required to tell about that. Hawk explains Reva’s side to Marah. I’m kind of sorry Dinah outed Amanda. Blake kind of deserves it. Dinah’s right it’s a bit harsh to defend Blake to Amanda when Amanda was in the hospital.

Matt warns Blake and is shocked to hear Amanda was at least telling part of the truth. Ross walks by and over hears.

Wednesday, February 14, 1996

Alex finally shows up at Cedars to see A-M to find Nick and Susan already there this morning. I know it’s not nice what they are saying about Blake who I like, but I’m enjoying Dinah and Amanda as friends. They both need some female and friendly support.

About Blake Dinah: “She’s toast.”

Amanda: “Burnt toast.”

Dinah: “Soon to be turned into crumbs.”

Amanda: “And swept away. Bye-bye Blake.”

Alan shows up very concerned about Amanda. Why do you think Amanda could easily get out, Blake? I mean she Macguyvered her way out, but it wasn’t obvious.

Reva genuinely doesn’t know what Annie is talking about. I don’t blame Ross for being appalled. That is some mustache on the cop. Roger is still playing the distressed husband role. Luckily Dinah isn’t having it.

Nick and Susan are trying to keep prying eyes away from Lucy and Alan-Michael making out. We get a reference to Valentine’s Day. They were originally supposed to get married on that day. Which considering that was VERY close to A-M and Harley’s anniversary, it’s a little tasteless. Great job building up tension about the witness.

I don’t know why Reva objected to her lawyer. I think this is perfectly fair testimony especially because she had done absolutely nothing to help this woman even since marrying big money. Alex informs Nick and Susan who were talking about an impromptu wedding that she plans Alex: “the wedding of MY dreams.” Alan comes in informing the family that he has moved back into the mansion and that Amanda is down in Emergency. Roger continues to try and save his relationship with Dinah. It was Roger’s place originally, I don’t know why Dinah thinks he should leave.

Blake is put in the cell next to Brent Lawrence who is still insisting he’s Marian Crane. Roger is still focusing on how he NEEDS Dinah in his life. Sadly it’s because he’s embezzling her money and doesn’t want it to come out. Roger has a rare gift he can make you like him and hate him within the space of a handful of episodes and then do it all over again. Amanda to Matt about how she couldn’t break out of the construction shack: “Forgive me for never having watched This Old Shack.” That’s a reference to a popular PBS home remodel show This Old House. Annie testifies about her alcoholism and does a great job. (Honestly the only time I ever liked Annie on the show was when she was fighting with Ghost Reva otherwise it always seemed like even when she was happy there was a level of frenzied crazy eye right below the surface, but she did NOT deserve the campaign against her by Jeva which has already began even though Josh doesn’t realize it yet.)

Matt gets Amanda to drop the charges against Blake and is still on her case. Alexandra overhears his threat, but doesn’t know what Matt has on Amanda. Frank is frustrated about getting through to Brent and calls A-M. Dinah tells Roger that she isn’t having any that setting up Marcus and constantly seeing the look of pity in Holly’s eyes is too much she isn’t going back. Again it was Roger’s place Dinah moved in why should he leave?

Hart shows up on Dinah’s door. Blake is released and A-M shows up at the jail to talk to Brent. The judge rules that the kids stay with Josh, but Annie has to move out. I’m pretty positive, but not 100% that this is the tag for Wednesday, but the way it’s put together both the clips and the structure this could possibly be the before the credits of the next day.

Thursday, February 15, 1996

Dinah makes a crack about Hart not being the Prize Patrol – she is referencing American Publishing House which sent out a prize patrol with balloons and a giant fake check announcing you won so many million dollars in their drawing which you entered by buying magazine subscriptions. Frank Cooper decides he might be able to crack Brent by bringing in Alan-Michael and Lucy. Amanda is still sick (coughing) when no one is around, but not too bad. Blake shows up at her room to tear into Amanda. I think that Blake is wrong. Sure Amanda could have gotten out, but she easily might not have been able to. It was pretty clever of Amanda to come up with taking the door off the hinges and while she did hide from the guard, a cold night, a slack guard, and he might not have checked. It was a dangerous stunt if she didn’t follow up. Everyone is upset when Annie is ordered out of the house, but I kind of love this judge and I think he’s right.

Judge: “It seems to me that Mr. Lewis has been moving JUST A BIT quickly, starting with his petition to this court two years early to have Reva Shayne Lewis declared legally dead….your client brought a new woman into the lives of his children. He encouraged them to call her Mommy. It would almost seem to this court that he wants Reva Shayne Lewis to stay dead to his children.”

I think this judge is amazingly right on. Why didn’t Manny get HIM in divorce court so he could tell them to sit down and take a breath when they were rushing to get divorced? Buzz moves in to comfort and make a move on Reva. If the construction shack was so weak what was the point of it existing? It was supposed to be protecting those tools and it’s a semi-permanent set, it wasn’t exactly made of paper. Josh: “This shouldn’t be happening. It’s not fair. We both know who’s responsible.” Actually you’re exactly right, Josh. This shouldn’t be happening and YOU and Reva are responsible. Stand up and let Annie go now cleanly and she might still have a chance. What a great Ross and Ed best friend scene near the end. I just love it when they play that.

UPDATED January 9 2018: I realized I didn’t have a summary block so I added one and moved some of the quotes down a line.

Brent Lawrence Bomb in the Lighthouse Part 4 Feb 5 thru Feb 9 1996

January 3, 2017

LAM’s fathers, Alan and Buzz, have teamed up to save the kids in one of my all time favorite Alan-Buzz sequences. Reva and Nick McHenry also join in the rescue effort. LAM are finally rescued and A-M and Alan make peace. Hart has taken his revenge on Roger by bedding Dinah, but Dinah still believes they are the real thing – for good reason. Dinah confides in Ross and he starts divorce proceedings between her and Roger. Bridget is furious that Hart is intending to abandon his son. There is some Annie-Jeva stuff which feels more like a check in with the story rather than organically fitting with the characters’s actions in the other storylines right now. However there is one of the most important scenes ever for Reva when she tries to explain Jeva to Alan in the most clear headed way she ever did. Blake locks Amanda into the construction shed kicking off a great and colorful dream sequence. Comment blocks below include clip description, quotes, and my comments.

Monday, February 5, 1996

Hart had come to town wanting revenge on Roger for what he did to his grandfather (impregnated and then abandoned his daughter, stole his land, and triggered his death) and how Roger had believed Jenna (Roger’s then wife) over Hart when Jenna accused Hart of aggressively hitting on her. (Jenna had lied to cover her own betrayal of Roger.) Hart rubs Roger’s nose in the fact he had sex with Dinah. Marcus talks sense to Dinah, but she doesn’t want to hear it – so what else is new? Reva tells Frank and Frank calls in the cops to come to the dock. We have an amazingly good section where Alan and Buzz have a great back and forth with Brent. Over the years they have Alan and Buzz be enemies and have them work together. It’s always a lot cooler when they set them up to work together. They are different, but both can pull out the gravitas when needed. They throw in some Jeva-Annie business just to do a check-in on that storyline although it feels off where they stick it in. Of course Reva’s lawyer would try to find stuff against Annie and Josh. What do they think? Lucy and Alan-Michael “marry” each other while waiting for the bomb to go off at about 20 minutes into this clip. I was wondering at the time why they didn’t worry about Brent having a camera recording them. Lucy should have followed Brent into the room and not given him a chance to watch it.

Tuesday, February 6, 1996

It was nice look at Ross’ law office, but I don’t know why he’d take off and leave it unlocked. It’s nice of Alan to talk Buzz down about Frank. Nick McHenry shows up and wants to know what’s going on. Reva had hidden in the back of Brent’s truck and is now sneaking into the lighthouse. Hart brings Dinah to Ross’ office to start the ball rolling on her divorce, but doesn’t want to stick around. I don’t understand though what his issue was. Even if he was completely lying (which I only think he thinks he is right now) why not just say he wants kept out for legal reasons and has to go back to work. Why make the big point about leaving to go to lunch? I kind of feel bad though, for once in his life Frank cracks a crime through brain power & 30 seconds later Reva comes in and steals his glory. I’m with Ross I saw how Roger talked Dinah into signing him her power of attorney and I still can’t believe she was that stupid. It’s also not good to co-mingle all funds even within a good marriage. That exact accounting of Dinah’s funds (which Roger has been embezzling left and right) is why Roger has been making these desperate plays to keep Dinah. I think he did like her, but he liked her money and sticking it to Ross even more. Roger is in love with Holly and despite all the garbage between them (they are both in need of serious psych help) I do believe she loves him too. Going for the bomb was truly a brilliant move on Alan-Michael’s part. He is at his smartest in the year or so right before this.

Wednesday, February 7, 1996

Really these are very well done recap half scenes.

Roger: “You know what it’s like to love somebody so much that you’d be willing to do anything to keep them.”

Ross: “Yes, but I don’t think you do.”

Ross is completely wrong here. Roger was willing to deliberately injure himself in a car crash to get another chance with Holly. He just doesn’t feel that way about Dinah. Plus, Ross should see that Roger is legitimately desperate, just over the consequences not losing Dinah per say.  I don’t get Hart being ready to take off either. I don’t think he was ever mature enough to be a good father, but I do think he cared about the kid, at least enough to say goodbye in person. Plus, this is where he gets to stick to Roger. If he takes off Roger might get Dinah back which Hart has spent all this time to set up to keep from happening. Cassie Lawrence (Brent’s sister) shows up and tries to talk Brent down. Ross talks sense to Dinah while Roger waits outside. Maybe he’s trying to get Ross to bust them up hoping he can then reconcile. Bridget reads Hart the riot act. She has started to get emotionally involved again. And if you were starting to think maybe Roger genuinely caring for Dinah note that it was the minute Ross tried to get her to sign the nullification of the Power of Attorney was when he burst in and sadly she leaves without signing. Ross and Roger have a long complicated history an confrontation between them is great. David was in love with Bridget and he was my second choice for her right behind Dylan. They were great friends for a long time – as Bridget and Dylan were – and I think they could have had an incredibly solid marriage, but it never occurred to Bridget to see David that way. The back and forth between Brent, Lucy, and Alan-Michael during the confrontation is great, but it takes like 2 minutes tops to run up the stairs at the lighthouse. Just what is taking Frank and Nick so long? They should have showed them starting later if they didn’t want them up there by now. I’m glad A-M showed he truly was the better person by holding on to Brent, but I can’t blame Lucy for wanting him to let go. This was a good fake out with Bridget and Hart, but it would have been better if they’d cut it in before Dinah arrived. I’ve never heard Miranda read like that, but I think if you have to say “Do you understand?” you need some sort of recognition before you can continue. Full long credits at the end of this one.

Thursday, February 8, 1996

Dinah and Hart talk and you figure out maybe Hart’s decision wasn’t as clear cut as everyone else thought to this point. Blake comes in and hears Ross tell that Hart slept with Dinah to get get even. Blake is on Hart’s side, but Roger tells Blake he still loves her no matter how she feels around him. Roger: “[Amanda] is after your husband and everyone in the whole town knows it…so far this one may have lusted after Amanda only in his heart, but give him time.” [In a very famous interview of former President Jimmy Carter when asked about if he’d ever committed adultery he admitted to having lusted in his heart and the phrase caught on.]

Alan-Michael: “I’m fine.”

Alan: “I’ll believe that when Ed Bauer tells me. I almost lost you once I’m not taking another chance.”

Dinah is hurt by Hart’s attitude. Ed checks out Lucy and Alan-Michael. They are good, but he wants them both in the hospital overnight for observation. Lucy apologizes for losing the $10 million dollars by hitting Brent with the suitcase.

A-M: “Father….that money in the satchel it wasn’t yours, was it?”

Lucy: “Yea, I’m very sorry for loosing it. I just had to hit him with something.”

Alan: “You were magnificent, Lucy. I couldn’t have put it to better use myself.

Lucy: “Yea, but it was a lot of money.”

A-M: “It WAS yours.”

Alan: “It’s only money, son. The most important thing is that you are safe.”

And he really means it. That right there is while you love Alan despite all the awful crap he pulls. I never really liked Nick except when he was happy with Mindy, but when he truly acts like a cousin to A-M which is rare enough I love him. Brent has terrible mental issues. I don’t think he’s faking, but I don’t remember. Why didn’t they call Amanda? She’s his sister and helped during the crisis. Matt to Vanessa about Dinah: “She doesn’t know you as well as she thinks she does.” Sadly that’s because while she does her best to take care of Dinah, Vanessa never ever opens up to Dinah. They needed that conversation for Vanessa to confess how she was as a young woman and how desperate she is for Dinah not to repeat her mistakes. Another nice Alan-Buzz moment. Buzz to Reva: “You have a choice.” You have a choice? Yea, Reva could choose to be independent and walk away from Alan without having to run to another man for once.

Friday, February 9, 1996

I don’t know why Reva believed Josh’s story and allowed it to color her attitude so completely. Even if Alan did things worse than Josh said, he just went through that ordeal with his kid. If she had even mild affection for him, she should have felt glad for him.

Blake: “Very smooth.”

Amanda: “I use moisturizer. Everyone should.”

Blake and Amanda who are more alike than either will admit (which is too bad Amanda grew up a lot during her first run on the show she was in a really great place last time we saw her before this recast). Blake locks Amanda in the construction shack which should have a phone so she can call to get out. I hope she can. Blake could have been having supper with Ross instead. It would have better served her cause. Rick is subpoenaed by Reva’s lawyer. Reva’s lawyer, Althea Templeton, warns her that Ross will come after her fitness as a mother. Reva: “I’m their mother. I gave them life and for the last 5 years I’ve lived like a damn saint.”

Marah hears the yelling for some reason assumes it’s about her. Marah is acting odd and Annie and Josh realize it. Reva tries to talk Alan to get it. Reva: “Bud can’t give without taking something back. He’s a Lewis and I’m a Shayne.” Reva describes the terrible thing that is always an issue between them. I think she’s quite right about this Josh doesn’t see it. This reminds me so much of the scene where she was moving out of H.B.’s house to move in with Josh and he made her throw out her clothes because HIS wife wouldn’t wear those things that I think is a defining moment in their relationship even more than the fountain scene.

Reva: “I just can’t be beholden to him anymore and that’s the bottom line. Maybe he just can’t see it. Maybe being born golden blinds you to certain things and being born poor lets you see too much. Bud always knew his place in the world and I spent a lifetime looking for mine and I thought that maybe once I had him I’d have everything I needed in life. I’d finally feel strong and safe and secure and that I could do no wrong. He knew I’d be and do whatever he wanted to get him and he was right. Even when we were kids he’d dangle carrots in front of my face. He’d say you be it Reva or we can’t play or put a prettier dress on or I won’t sit  in church with you. I gave Josh my mind, my body, and my soul and I will NOT give him my children so he can make them feel the way I felt my entire life.”

Alan: “Reva, you can find a middle ground.”

Reva: “No, Alan, with Bud it’s all or nothing and that’s the way it’s going to have to be with me. I’m sorry, but I’m moving out.”

Rick and Ed discuss their subpoenas. Rick thinks Ed will be able to claim privileged information and Ed says recent court rulings says that AAA people can be forced to testify about things said in meetings which I think is terrible. I’m going to have to look it up and see if that’s still true. That Ed understands this I totally get, but what does he mean IF? Ed did this same exact thing to protect Michelle from Claire. Rick is exactly right about this. I know Ed thinks Rick is seeing what he wants too, but he’s completely correct. Josh and Reva are getting back together and Annie is just a roadblock. And it’s the not telling Annie that will completely break her.

Annie’s hair is completely gorgeous here. Annie is such a competent nurse. I hate they took that away from her. The old guy’s name isn’t Scottie Hamilton. Scott Hamilton was a very famous Olympic ice skater. I just love it. Amanda is still trapped. Amanda: “Help! Is anyone out that? Help me I’ve been locked inside by a neurotic bimbo!” Now that’s funny. Amanda has an AMAZING fantasy sequence based on Dudley DoRight. Mountie Marler: “What do you expect from the daughter of Snidley Whiplash?” — Amanda: “Now show me while they call you mounties.” Eyebrow arch. LOL

I’m glad that Rick didn’t get his wish about reuniting with Annie, but that is a lovely old married couple squabble. That is a gorgeous wild rose quilt in Marah’s room. That’s terrible lighting in the Alan/Reva scene look at that awful  shadow on Reva’s sweater and then on her face. After Reva poured her heart out about the pain Josh caused how can Alan not get this?

UPDATED January 9 2018: I realized the introduction paragraph was accidentally repeated from the last post in this string. I also caught a couple of typos.

Demarva Life Interviews O’Leary and Aleksander Guiding Light Breathing Under Dirt

July 18, 2016
Phillip and Rick 2016

Phillip and Rick 2016

In late June 2016 Michael O’Leary (Rick Bauer #5, the adult one we know and love) and Grant Aleksander (Phillip Spaulding #2, adult Phillip) sat down for a Baltimore area regional talk show DemaraLife. They discuss both their time on Guiding Light and their new joint production – with O’Leary as author and Aleksander as director and star –  Breathing Under Dirt. O’Leary says it’s based in part on his coming to terms with unresolved issues dealing with his deceased father’s alcoholism.  Find out about the current production August 13-14, 2016. Keep up with future news on Facebook. Today O’Leary says he gets up everyday at 5 am just to do a little writing before his day really starts so look out for new material.

The cast from Guiding Light includes:

  • Cynthia Watros (Annie Dutton #1) ,
  • Michael O’Leary (Rick Bauer #5),
  • Grant Aleksander (Phillip Spaulding #2),
  • Tina Sloan (Lillian Raines)
  • Beth Chamberlain (Beth Raines Spaulding #2 – played Watros’s role in the original prize winning one-act play production)

Most of the Guiding Light stuff you would have heard before, but since this really isn’t directed at a GL fanbase audience what they say about their connection to fans is interesting. The best part, as always, is O’Leary‘s description of Charita Bauer (Bert Bauer). They also say that they are real life best friends and that Aleksander was determined to dislike O’Leary coming in since he was replacing the previous Rick (Phil MacGregor – who played the first adult Rick for about half a year) who had been a friend of his “and is now wildly successful at something else, but who could hold out against Mikey? He could melt an iceberg.” Aleksander said both he and O’Leary are still friends with MacGregor. They also briefly touch on how the cancellation hit them and especially recall their last time playing basketball together in character.

Aleksander: “Actually in an odd way, and this used to drive some of the ladies that we worked with nuts, because you internalize, you can’t help it you internalize a little bit about what’s going on, and every time we’d have one of these situations the writers sort of knew that the rooting value was always that Phillip and Rick, as long as they’re still going to be friends as long as they’re going to be friends. And sometimes the love interest whoever it might be would be ‘we were married and we do have a child and we care about THIS!'”

O’Leary: “They’d come up to me in the elevator and say ‘um Rick, Roxie may be a prostitute and have amnesia, but she loves you, child and Phillip, Phillip he’s cheating on you, but you’re going to still love Phillip. And I’d say, Ya, ya and ‘thank you Lord!'”

Interesting question on difference between soap opera acting and being on stage.

Besides the performance they’ll also have an actor workshop with Michael O’Leary in the same venue.

Bauer BBQ 1996

July 6, 2015

It’s the year when Ed has abandoned Rick and Michelle to move to Africa. Sadly rather than try to throw the Bauer BBQ by himself, Rick has cancelled it. So this is the year of the Surprise BBQ! I don’t understand though why everyone decided to wait to suprise Rick after dark – which would put it somewhere around 9:30 pm CT – when the BBQ is always a noon event. What has everyone been doing? Did they decide to go to the parade this year or something? OH! Earlier that day was the big demonstration where Alan Spaulding tried to blow up 5th Street. Another inexplicable thing is after the BBQ is over the same exact group of people head over to Towers. I don’t understand this timeline at all, but that’s how Springfield rolled in 1996.

Rick suprised by Bauer BBQ 1996

Michelle is definitely showing this is Rebecca Budig’s version. Marcus is sulking to his father about how he isn’t making any progress with Dehlia. Dehlia is going to the fireworks with J. Chamberlain instead. That was sure a spooky sound effect at the beginning of the opening. I remember this theme, but not that sound effect. (Jumped ahead to the next one spooky sound was there too. It must have been a thing in 1996, but must not have lasted long.) (Part 1)

Alan-Michael is convinced he saw a light in the lighthouse. Lucy isn’t so sure. They are married now and the reason someone being in the lighthouse upsets Lucy and A-M is back at New Year’s Eve they were both being held captive there by madman Brett Lawrence. While J is out of the room let me take advantage of the time to say just how much I resent them changing Anthony James’s name to J. They built an entire storyline including a viewer call in vote about naming him when he was born and now they don’t even give him a name, he’s a single letter. We have some nice early Rick-Abby scenes as she is preparing to move into the Bauer garage apartment. The young people are having a beach party. Michelle is still moping about not dating her cousin anymore. J. knew Dehlia was using him. That’s kind of great. I wish they had played J.’s powers of observation more. This was a great little analysis scene they could have played more of them and archeologist references are always cool. It hurts to see the lighthouse messed up like that. (Part 2)

Lucy and Alan-Michael find a kerosene lantern in the lighthouse. They can clearly see the beach where Michelle’s beach party is. It’s close to the lighthouse. Rick had given up on the BBQ when all of his friends and family show up. Abby had worked with Lillian and gotten Grandma Bert’s recipes from Michelle to organize it all. Rick reports that Ed did call in that morning. Nice catch. Phillip is fairly newly returned and wasn’t in town for Vanessa and Matt’s wedding so he doesn’t know how Nola accidentally food poisoned everybody at the reception. This really does underline how far Annie’s life fell within a year. Here she is a happy, welcome member of town, but in just a year she will be the town pariah. It really makes 1997 when she gate crashes in an almost identical outfit much more poignant. I really love how Rick always translates for Abby whether he’s talking to her directly or not. Bill is bullied over Matt. (Part 3)

The Grants have to leave and Phillip pulls Rick aside. They talk about his quest to find out which family member was behind the judge’s insistence that part of Rick and Phillip’s probation be that they had to be out of Springfield. Alan-Michael and Lucy show up and spill 1. That someone was at the lighthouse 2. A-M had spied on Ed one year and knew the exact recipe of Bauer Burgers. Sadly the Zachary Smith aka Angel Boy story is beginning. Zachary knew Vanessa has a potentially fatal disease and is interfering to make sure it is diagnosed. This genetic ailment would drive stories for years until they decided to do their best to make Dinah 100% bad guy before she and Hart left the canvas. The actor later said the storyline had ended up playing out much differently than originally scripted. (Part 4)

Gilly invites Griffin to the fireworks. This storyline is going to revolve around the fact that Gilly’s mother Vivian had been involved with Griffin around the time Gilly was conceived. Vivian is trying to keep this quiet both because she has firmly put her activist days behind her in favor of being a society blueblood and because she’s not sure that her husband really is Gilly’s father. Phillip is working on the hand crank ice cream churn. Phillip and Lucy have a really nice conservation, too bad part of what Phillip is doing is working Lucy for information trying to root out who betrayed him. Rick decides Vanessa does need that MRI and tells her so. This bit where Angel Boy just talks as if he’s vaguely reporting and acts like he is or isn’t getting an answer that we can’t hear is a regular part of the storyline. (Part 5)

We get a last shot at all the stories under fireworks with Marcus seeing Dehlia with J. and Griffin telling Gilly he’d had an affair with her mother lit more fireworks for tomorrow. (Part 6)

Episode Break

Phillip is up to something making secret phone calls. Rick looks terrible with his hair slicked like that. Blake must be pregnant with the Miniature Marlers. Dueling Rogers. Too bad what I like and dislike about Roger are evenly split. The nice emotional Roger is in restraints, but his strength and cleverness is all in the tuxedo version. (Part 7)

This is when Hart and Dinah were working together to get revenge against Roger. Roger deserved it, but some of their actual interactions with Roger were hard to watch. Gilly reacts to Griffin’s revelation that he’d had an affair with her mother. (Part 8)

Abby is set up by the idea of family members fighting against each other. Actually I think Abby has a very good point. Phillip shows up to talk to Lucy at the yacht after A-M has to run into the office. Let’s see Phillip you showed up at A-M’s wedding and tried to make it all about you. For the record, if you’re getting as tired of Phillip’s probing as I am, Alan was the one responsible for the out of state probation. (Part 9)

Blake shows up to visit Roger in the hospital. Hart feels guilty for what they’ve done to Roger. I think both Dinah and Hart make some good and true points about Roger. Marcus is still mooning over Dehlia. Lucy is a lot smarter in a lot of ways than Phillip thinks. (Part 10)

I just love watching Rabby together. Marcus and Gilly have a nice soul searching session. (Part 11)

I know it sounds like A-M is being paranoid, but he’s 90% right. He just doesn’t know Phillip has revenge on his mind instead of power. (Part 12)

Blake gets back to Towers. Lucy meets Zachary again. Roger arrives at the penthouse will Dinah and Hart in his bed after Blake unbinds him at the hospital. (Part 13)

New Year’s 1995-1996 Masquerade Ball

January 3, 2015

It’s an incredible New Year’s in Springfield where almost everyone his headed to a masquerade ball at the Lakeland Country Club and the Marian Crane story is coming to a head with Nick McHenry’s fiancee Susan Bates in a coma, but knowing Marian is to blame and meant to attack Lucy. The Reva returned to town from the dead storyline reaches a crescendo. Blake and Amanda’s fight over Ross hits high gear. Plus this includes one of the most defining moments of Rebecca Budig’s Michelle.

These dates aren’t given on the YouTube channel and finding day to day reports back then is problematic, so these are dates given on several assumptions. There is currently no easily available source to double check them. The dates given are coming from the known date of the distinctive clip episode which is known to have originally aired on Christmas day 1995. From there I’ve followed the episode breaks to divide episodes (these sometimes include clear opening or closing credits and are other times based on knowledge of how soap episodes are structured. It also based on what the included ads say about what days episodes would air and a 1995-1996 calendar. The numbers the parts don’t match the clip titles that they were loaded with but are their order in this post. For each link below description and comments on that particular piece are made, followed by the actual link.

Rick and Abby at NYE Ball 1995

Rick and Abby at NYE Ball 1995

Tuesday, December 26, 1995

Roger is excited his stock is going well and so is Dinah until she discovers a suspiciously fat credit card bill. Lillian and Annie are discussing the Masquerade Ball. Josh goes to Ross Marler for legal help protecting the kids and Reva goes to see Vanessa in case she’ll listen to her side of the story and help. (Part 1)

Annie and Rick talk about if Annie’s and Josh’s marriage will take place. Reva uses Vanessa’s past with Dinah to make her point. Vanessa is bested by facts, but stubbornly sticks to Josh’s side. Sadly I think Marah did need help and she never got it. Ross tries to talk sense to Josh (which almost always an impossible task). (Part 2)

Matt comes back to give a not too receptive Bridget some big brotherly advice about Hart. Hart stops by the Fifth Street Diner. Buzz: “Well, Son of a …..Thorpe is back.” Blake met Hart at the diner, gives him a hard time for not keeping in touch and catches him up on her life. Roger makes sure Dinah can’t read the details of the credit card bill. Vanessa argues that Reva needs to give her children space. Vanessa tells Reva they found out that she was alive via Alex’s tape of her dancing in the diner with Buzz. (Part 3)

Ross urges Josh to get an annulment as fast as possible. Blake and Hart continue their talk. (Part 4)

Bridget continues her argument with Matt while Bridget sets up Company for the day which she is currently running. Bridget: “Dylan…(voice break) Dylan was different.” Hart stops by and wants to be friends again with Bridget. Annie gave Rick a friendly hug which Abby spies and is heart broken over. Rick does a comedy dance number in the hospital. Lillian and Annie are clowning around trying to make Abby excited about the masquerade ball, Abby the girl who freaked out over masks a couple of months ago at Halloween. Rick asks Abby to go with him to the ball. Buzz: “As I live and gag, it must be unwanted customer day.” Reva charges into the diner to give Buzz what for for exposing her. Ironically Buzz indignantly asks Reva how she could leave town when she has kids here. (Part 5)

Apparently it’s drop a pop culture reference day. Blake was waiting for Ross to get back from court in his office. They are trying to get pregnant, but no luck yet. Blake shares her hopes that she and Hart will grow closer now they agree about Roger. Ross makes a Father Knows Best joke Bud and Kitten. Talk turns to Josh and Reva. Buzz and Reva make up and Buzz makes a Lazarus joke. Hart asks Bridget to the ball and says he will get the costumes. Dinah and Roger spy on Bridget and Hart and disagree if Hart is trying to get in a relationship with his son, Peter, or into Bridget’s bed.–6_9OjGI (Part 6)

Dinah actually does give Bridget a good piece of advice, but since their rivalry is already started Bridget won’t listen. Dinah: “Now what would I want with a two timer like Hart who’d come onto you after kissing me.” Good advice Dinah, wish you’d followed it yourself. Hart always does have to have two women on a string normally one is closer at a time, but the other one he keeps interested. Roger overhears Dinah bragging about Hart’s recent come ons to her. Matt came home and urged Vanessa to skip her fitting for her costume (that night?). Josh stops by the hospital to reassure Annie and drops the bomb that they need to get an annulment. (Part 7)

Michelle and Bill at the Ball 1995

Michelle and Bill at the Ball 1995

Wednesday, December 27, 1995

Roger overhears Dinah talk about Hart’s recent bad behavior. Frank Cooper is a beat cop sitting at the diner with his partner Nell Cleary and Detective Levy. Frank wants to have a confidential police conversation in the diner. He and Nell have been trying to solve Det. Patrick Cutter’s murder, they feel they have evidence that points them to Marian Crane, instead of former prime suspect Marcus Williams. Lucy and A-M are telling Marian the news about Susan’s reaction which might mean she’s recovering from the attack. Lucy still thinks of Marian as a friend. A-M is thinking Marian attacked Susan (which she did). (Part 8)

CBS soaps Guiding Light and As the World Turns won’t be on air for New Years ad. Brent psychotically hears his mother’s voice telling him how worthless he is when he hears Susan is waking up. Lucy checks on Marian after she runs out of the office. Frank continues to push the case. Cutter had written Mar before he died. They think it was Marcus Williams, but what if it was Marian Crane? (Part 9)

Roger suggests Hart’s behavior was because he was still trying to get to Roger (which he was despite his attraction to Dinah). Dinah accuses Roger of all people of wearing rose colored glasses. Nice transition from crashing glassware to crashing glassware. Det. Cutter HAD been “dating” Marian because he suspected her of murder and it was part of his investigation. (Part 10)

Bridget’s speech references Nola’s speech from years ago shortly before she decided to land Kelly. Nola should really commiserate. Marian called to find out Susan’s condition and they tell her. Now you know why they passed HIPA. Frank and Nell shows up and try to trap Marian into spilling about Cutter’s death. (Part 11)

Nell compliments Marian on always looking so perfect (which she does). Marian is rattled. Lucy and A-M are talking to Nick who is frustrated the doctors know so little about Susan’s condition. (Part 12)

Hart and Roger confront each other over the state of their relationship and what they’ve done. A-M and Nick try to convince Lucy that Marian was the one who has attacked her and Susan. Buzz is looking at Christmas cards and Eleni points out Nadine hasn’t contacted them. Buzz: “I’m in my blue period. I hope to get out of this into my impressionistic period where I can let everything out.” Brent argues with his mother’s disembodied voice. (Part 13)

Nola and Bridget are talking. Nola tries to cheer Bridget up, but seems to say everything wrong until he finally talks her around. Nola is right it was her attitude and personality was what attracted Quint. Nola has gotten Bridget an appointment for a makeover at Salon de Artiste. Roger still wants Hart to come around and for them to connect with Peter. Hart isn’t having any. Nadine’s canvas wrapped body floats up to the surface of the lake. (Part 14)

Thursday, December 28, 1995

Frank and Nell are staking out Marian. The ball begins at the Lakeland Country Club. Alan-Michael is dressed as Zorro and Lucy is his senorita. I understand the red sash matches Lucy’s accent color, but as Zorro wore black to disappear into the night, it really doesn’t fit the outfit. Lucy and A-M continue to discuss their strong and opposite views about Marian. Alexandra arrives and says Alan isn’t welcome at the ball, but Reva is at home getting ready. (Part 15)

Alan calls Reva out that she wants to go to the ball because of Josh. Alexandra seems to be Queen Elizabeth. Josh and Annie are a nondescript antebellum southern belle and her beau. Lucy worries if Marian IS guilty that it can be put down to her poor judgment of people. Marian really has an unbelievably beautiful apartment. Look at that stylized arch into the alcove and that amazing windowseat. How much is she paying for that?  Marian realizes Frank and Nell are staking out her place. (Part 16)

We find Rick and Michelle in the Bauer Living Room which is still decorated for Christmas. Rick is teasing Michelle and makes a Beverly Hillbillies joke. Rick: “Are you going as Ellie Mae Clampett?” Michelle doesn’t like the colonial miss (maybe Betsy Ross?) outfit Ed picked out for her. Ed is right though the Betsy Ross dress IS Michelle. Rachel Miner’s Michelle and Joie Lenz’s Michelle would totally wear that and love it. It’s only Rebecca Budig’s Michelle that’s so uncomfortable with herself that she would object. Michelle gets an idea for Abby. Reva insists she just wants to dance at the party when Josh’s restraining order arrives. (Part 17)

Josh’s restraining order temporarily breaks Reva’s spirit. Alan urges her to run away with him. Annie agrees to annulling Josh and Annie’s marriage. Oh, Josh and Annie are supposed to be Katherine and Healthcliff from Wuthering Heights. Those are TERRIBLE costumes to be that, but it’s fitting because they were crazy and dysfunctional, too. A-M convinces Lucy that she needs some distance in her relationship with Marian. Marian thinks she’s outsmarted Frank, which admittedly isn’t that hard. Frank is probably the best community service-beat cop that the world has ever seen, he’s even pretty good while he’s chief of detectives, but he’s awful when it comes to actually solving a crime. Heck, he should bring even THIS version of Michelle along and she could do better than he could. (Part 18)

Michelle decides to help Abby win Rick. Reva decides she needs to fight Josh for the kids rather than run with Alan. Reva declares she’s going to stand up for who she is at the ball. Frank returns to the docks to see if there is something they missed as his mother’s floated to the surface body lurks nearby. (Part 19)

Ed is George Washington and Rick a generic colonial guy – I’m going with Paul Revere (both costumes WAY better than Josh and Annie’s by the way) when Abby and Michelle come down the stairs. Rick makes a going bald joke to Ed which goes over about as well as you’d expect. Rick’s wig is great though. I could get used to him in that look. This Michelle of course wears a pathetic bid for attention that didn’t really even look good in the original let alone a sad copy. I only feel sorry for the subsequent Michelles that they know photos of Michelle in THIS exist out there. She’s supposed to be Madonna. Rick supports her feelings in front of Ed, but what about how she’ll feel when she makes a spectacle of herself at the ball? I’m guessing she’s glad that Reva, Brent Lawrence, and Amanda and Blake all cause diversions. We get an extended Lady in Red version of Reva getting ready, but we don’t see her all dressed up yet. Alan can wear a suit like nobody’s business, but he doesn’t wear a tux all that well. Buzz is Napoleon (with apparently one too many of his brandies) and almost falls down the stairs in front of Eleni’s Josephine. A disguised Brent leaves under police scrutiny while they watch a dummy in the window. (Part 20)

Lillian appears to be a nondescript medieval woman. Matt is a southern gentleman (turns out it’s supposed to be Rhett Butler) and Bill is a Civil War Confederate solider.  Reva and Alan come in and both Josh and Annie swallow their gum. (Part 21)

Friday, December 29, 1995

Nick is at Susan’s bedside. Holly and Fletcher arrive to visit Susan. Frank unknowingly discovers Nadine’s corpse. (Part 22)

Alan and Reva and even Josh and Annie continue to make spectacles of themselves. I think Blake is dressed as Mae West and Ross is just in a tux. Nope I’m wrong they are Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire (still think that is a FAR better Mae West costume than it is a Ginger Rogers). A-M is concerned that Reva is there. Roger and Dinah come dressed as Julius Cesar and Cleopatra. Hart and Bridget show dressed up in 1920s flapper style, my guess maybe as Daisy and the Great Gatsby. (Part 23)

Vanessa, continuing her Gone with the Wind theme, is wearing Scarlet’s green curtain dress (which is by far the best and most identifiable costume we see all night, bar Gilly’s show girl which is also well done and clear) which makes Matt Rhett Butler. Matt tries again to talk sense to Bridget. Fletcher tries to talk Nick into coming back to the Journal. Nick tries to explain the concept of sticking with someone you love to Fletcher to whom it seems a foreign language. A-M asks Reva follow up questions about the strange man she saw in the lab. She agrees to work with a police sketch artist and says she can probably sketch him herself. Reva agrees to follow up tomorrow. Reva follows Josh and Annie to the Country Club terrace. (Part 24)

I really loved Matt and Dinah, I’m sorry they never went there. I think they were much more a partnership than Matt and Vanessa ever were. Reva, Josh, and Annie have a confrontation. If only Josh would have said, “Annie, I love you, but Reva is the love of my life. I may be furious with her, but that where my fate lies.” I think Annie would have been OK. But NO, he had to string her along. (Part 25)

Reva flashes back to her telling Alan of her determination to go to the ball. Josh follows her into the for some reason empty bar. Alan and Rick both reach out to Annie, one a beginning, one nearing the end of their relationship. Brent flashes back to killing Nadine, in case anyone forgot. Frank pushes to get an ID on the body he found. Levy: “That is what history is FOR Frank. You learn from it.” (Part 26)

Beautiful close up of Lucy’s engagement ring. Lucy is approached by a disguised Brent. Back in the ballroom Holly and Roger talk. I’m going to say having watched that Fletcher is supposed to be Henry 8th and Holly one of his wives whose head he chopped off, which is rather appropriate. Marah is so upset by Reva’s visit that Josh took her to a therapist. Annie is taking Rick’s opinion as her not being good enough, when Rick really want her marriage to fail so he could swoop in. (Part 27)

The body from the lake also has “Auburn Mist” wig hair on it. Reva finally tells Josh what happened from her point of view. (Part 28)

Wednesday, January 3, 1996

Frank is furious a third matching hair sample isn’t enough to get a search warrant on Marian. Lucy tells A-M she plans on confronting Marian. Annie: “I trust Josh completely.”  – while Jeva kiss. (Part 29)

Reva tries to convince Josh to reunite. He’s being a jerk. Someone wearing less than Michelle! It’s a Vegas showgirl. I don’t think that looks like Gilly, but she’s wearing a similar costume, so it could be. Annie tells Rick how secure her relationship with Josh is. Amanda arrives dressed as a belly dancer and Blake is irked as she dances over to Ross. Frank and his boss discuss the case in loud voices and Marcus’s dad Griffin Williams (who is a jerk, but right about this one) wants his son released immediately. (Part 30)

Griffin’s being right status doesn’t last long as he sees it as a media opportunity and seems to suggest Marcus’s arrest was racially motivated when that wasn’t the case at all. Frank doesn’t make a strong argument, but he’s right if they tip Marian (and she wasn’t psycho) she might take off and the truth might never come to light so Marcus would always live under a shadow of suspicion. And just how did “We” beat them? Frank is coming close to truly solving a case in his whole life doing all sort of grunt work to do it and Griffin only accidentally overheard part of a conversation. Josh bursts back into the ballroom with enough force that everyone turns to look at him and many notice he’s removed part of his costume. He strides over to Annie and asks her to dance trying and failing to act like he isn’t upset. Back in the still empty bar, Alan details all the things that her relationship with Josh has driven Reva to and declares if she still goes after Josh that she and Alan are done. Reva gives him a look and sweeps out of the bar. Reva storms over and pulls Josh and Annie apart. Reva: “NO MAN…and that includes you Joshua Lewis…walks away from me, after kissing me like THAT!” (Part 31)

Reva and Josh have screaming match in the middle of the dance floor. Reva: “I can read you like a book. See Bud… See Bud run away from what he’s really feeling; To Berkley, To South America, Into Telephone Poles, Or into the Arms of a Desperate Nurse.”  Josh hits her in the housekeeper’s daughter sore spot and like always Reva reacts. Buzz comforts Reva. A-M urges Lucy not to talk to Marian alone. Nick tries to get Susan to remember what happened during the attack. Finally she remembers it was Marian. (Part 32)

Nick calls Frank and tells him Susan remembers Marian attacking her. Marcus and Griffin have an argument. I think Griffin is totally wrong though. His efforts didn’t lead Frank to do more. I still don’t know why Marah is so upset over her mother being alive. Reva (about Roger): “Better watch this one, Dinah. He makes me look respectable.” I wish Roger had danced with Reva. Or Fletcher or Ross, but most Roger he understands being the pariah. Reva is doing the Angelina Jolie leg pushed out through slit move years before Angelina did it. Reva and Buzz are definitely not Manny quality on the dance floor. Most people are horrified at Reva’s grandstanding, but Rick is grinning and Amanda is openly laughing. I bet Phillip would be out there dancing with her again if he was in town. (Part 33)

Josh admits that he’s starting to understand Reva’s behavior. Josh is not really wrong what he says about their relationship, but honestly I think he’s emphasizing the negative. Alex calls for a change partners dance (which is really called a Circle 2 Step) and everyone piles out onto the floor. It’s really hard to tell because they don’t give her any close shots, but that’s Lillian in her white Medieval costume dancing with Brent. Who is Michelle dancing with? Roger to Vanessa: “It’s New Year’s Eve, Scarlett, not the Ides of March.” Susan gives details of attack to Frank. (Part 34)

Annie and Josh discuss Josh kissing Reva. Reva returns to the house Alan gave her and finds that Alan is holding to his statement that they were through if she ran after Josh. Back at the country club partners change again and Brent is dancing with Lucy. Honestly this kind of dance is a brilliant way to mix characters. Soaps ought to do this more often. (Part 35)

Thursday, January 4, 1996

Susan warns them that Marian was really after Lucy. Vanessa tells Roger off about his attempts to get closer to Peter. Josh admits Reva’s kiss made him feel something. (Part 36)

Alan insists that he’s leaving and Reva begs him to stay. Josh and Annie talk about him and Reva. Josh: “She was kissing me and all I could think about was getting back to you was being with you where it’s safe and where I’m happy and getting away from that place that was so painful and so hard.” If Annie stayed with Josh after hearing that, she kind of deserved being hurt, but not being driven crazy. Susan reaffirms that Marian meant to kill Lucy. Frank calls for a warrant for Marian. (Part 37)

(Sound not clear at beginning fixed halfway through) Lucy is trying to figure out who is dancing with her, still Brent. Poor Gilly has a pretty great costume, but so far not a single line. Hart jumps in to defend Dinah to Roger. Amanda: “So Ross, have you made your New Year’s resolutions yet?” Ross: “Of course I have, can’t break them if you don’t make them.” Amanda and Ross had a relationship before she left town years ago (when she was a different actress). Now she’s decided she wants Ross back, despite his marriage to Blake, Ross thinks she’s just being friend until she makes a pass even he couldn’t miss. That hasn’t happened yet. Vanessa talks Blake down from clobbering Amanda. (Part 38)

Josh (having magically regained his costume’s coat) goes after Annie when she flees to the porch. Reva tells Alan all about Josh pushing all her inferiority buttons (which he always does and why I don’t particularly like them together and it reminds me Josh Lewis is a Jerk). Hart to Dinah: “You sure didn’t inherit the Chamberlain manners, did you?” Hart and Dinah have it out about his interference between her and Roger. Michelle and Bill are in the background today. Gilly finally gets some lines when after Alan-Michael stumped Lucy and she tried to see if anyone else knew. Lucy: “Trivia for you – what was Zorro’s horse’s name?” Gilly and her date all shout out various cowboy names. Answer: It’s Tornado. (Totally adore Guy Williams and Disney’s Zorro is an amazing show. I wonder if it means A-M was a Disney Zorro fan, too. Seriously watch the episodes if you can.) Marian starts to confess on the phone to draw A-M out of the ballroom. (Part 39)

Frank and Nell are back in the car watching Marian’s house. A-M rushes off leaving Lucy with her father. Buzz knows the name of the horse. Josh pulls Annie back in, using her as a shield from Reva, just as Reva said. Alan points out he and Reva had this relationship before where he supports her and then she runs back to Josh. Alan is not willing to repeat that. Reva strips for Alan. (Part 40)

Josh makes love to Annie “like never before” and Annie doesn’t get that it’s because of Reva. Annie is wearing gorgeous underpinnings though. Reva is seducing Alan. Susan and Nick are ringing in the New Year. Finally having warrant in hand the cops discover Marian’s mannequin. (Part 41)

Ladies Room scene with Blake and Holly. Blake and Amanda have confrontation, always good stuff in those ladies room scenes. Oh Amanda, the place to lock people in there is the broom closet, ask Vanessa and Reva, someone is going to come in and need the facilities. Wow have we seen the room with the stalls and sink before? A-M showed up at Marian’s apartment. A-M realizes Marian set him up to get Lucy alone. A disguised Brent gets Lucy outside as the only two people wanting to see the New Year’s fireworks. And doing better than every other soap character ever, one kiss and Lucy knows this guy isn’t A-M. (Part 42)

Friday, January 5, 1996

Amanda had locked Blake into the bathroom stalls part of the ladies room and Blake is struggling to get out while Amanda makes a friendly move on Ross. For some reason they have a substitute Brent Lawrence today. Brent subdues Lucy on the Country Club patio. Dinah takes a New Year’s feast to her best friend Marcus Williams in jail. Blake comes charging out to be waylaid by Matt. but we don’t get to see what must have been a terribly interesting conversation between them. Marcus: Don’t you usually get your last meal before electrocution?” Dinah: “Actually I think it’s lethal injection in this state.” Lucy has been drug off. Nick is waiting for Susan’s answer to his proposal. Nick to Susan: “I do love you and I want to be your husband. It’s as simple and as complicated as that.” Michelle and Bill grab champagne for a toast, but Vanessa spots their underage attempt and cuts them off at the pass. Blake confronts Amanda. A-M realizes Marian has Lucy. (Part 43)

Blake and Amanda’s confrontation turns into a food fight to cheers and egging on from the crowd. Matt who has spent most of the night grabbing wayward females does it again with Amanda. Marcus and Dinah laugh over their late supper. It’s great that Dinah came and visited him every day he was in jail. Marcus and Dinah had such a great friendship. It’s truly why I wish Marcus had never left town, that was an important relationship. (Part 44)

Roger crashes Dinah and Marcus’s party. Roger offers to take Dinah to New York City for a two week vacation to make their fight up as a proper honeymoon. Marcus sarcastically encourages Dinah to go to New York City, but she realizes she needs to stand by Marcus until he’s out of jail. Hart and Bridget leave. Amanda confesses to Ross that she locked Blake in, coloring it in her favor. Vanessa gives Blake good advice. Great cut away interfaces where they pick up phrases and repeat it between the two conversations. Alex vainly tries to carry on as if nothing had happened. Alex asks Fletcher to edit down the piece on the party making it seem less drama filled than it was, but he refuses. They realize that it was Marian dressed up in the Cyrano (big nose) costume they saw leave Marian’s building. (Part 45)

Marcus stirs up Dinah against Roger. Gilly and Griffin have a friendly conversation. This is part of the buildup where Vivian finally reveals she herself had an affair with Griffin and he could be Gilly’s father. Rick had protected Marian’s cross dressing as doctor-patient privilege, but he tells now. (Part 46)

Dinah says good night to Hart. Hart showed up to talk to Dinah who is leaving half her stuff she set up for Marcus behind. Matt says it’s time to go home. Brent takes Lucy to the lighthouse. (Part 47)

Monday, January 8, 1996

Dinah starts to remove her costume to signal we’re leaving New Year’s Eve behind. Hart tries to tell Dinah he sees a lot in her. Vivian confronts Griffin about whether he expects to seduce Gilly. The police discover footprints, most likely Marian’s, leading to service parking lot. Alan and Jeva are in afterglow, but they aren’t exactly glowing. A-M arrives pounding on Reva’s door. Brent is a substitute again. (Part 48)

A-M barges in needing to talk to Reva. Alan tries to kick him out, but Reva intervenes and A-M says Lucy was kidnapped. Frank recaps what’s happened with Lucy tonight. Nice that the background noise includes radio calls about the kidnapping. Dinah: “The point is NOBODY tells me what to do.” Hart talks Dinah into going somewhere quieter with him. (Part 49)

The local news people descend in costume on the investigation. Frank convinces them to keep the story quiet until they find Lucy. Griffin denies that he did anything wrong with Vivian. Vivian remembers their days protesting together. A-M came to Reva to get a sketch of the man who scared Reva in the lab when he was changing Lucy’s test results and who he thinks has her now. (Part 50)

Cleary suggests avenues of investigation. Buzz still can’t believe Marian was living in disguise so long. Buzz: “This person, this Marian Crane lived around us for.. what? months? She ate with us, told us her problems, I even felt sorry for her.” Buzz finds out that Marian was always a suspect before she grabbed Lucy and reacts badly. Dinah and Hart end up at the 5th Street Diner to talk. Eleni is working the diner (after all this, they didn’t just close it?). An apparent hooker comes in for coffee and Eleni wants her to move along so Marina won’t see her. Hart interferes to buy her a coffee. Gilly interrupts Vivian and Griffin, she hears part of the conversation and Vivian covers. (Part 51)

Hart’s actions and comments gets Dinah’s ire raised and she tells him about how she was raised in circus. Buzz tears into Nell wanting to know what she thought she was doing. Brent starts to record a gloating message. Does Reva show artistic talent anywhere else (besides her photography)? Because that’s a pretty impressive drawing that shows Alan-Michael and Alan that it’s a supposedly dead Brent Lawrence behind it all. (Part 52)

Technically the day hasn’t dawned on New Year’s Day yet, but as costumes are removed we get more back into a regular day and seem to forget it’s still the small hours of the morning. So I thought this was the best place to stop this post, but since I have the dates figured out to this point, I’ll pick the story back up when I get a chance and continue to match the days with the episodes.

UPDATE 2015: Justin Deas explains why they switched Brents about halfway through this clip:

Christmas 1995 Updated 2014

December 24, 2014

I had previously done 1995, but I only had the actual Christmas day episode and the quality of clips weren’t as good as these. Find that post here:

1995 – Memories of Christmas Past – A clip show of highlights Christmas and not

However, Bandstand Mike’s channel is offering better quality clips and a few extra days, so here we go again. Bauer Living Room Xmas 1995

The highlight of Christmas 1995 was that the episode that actually aired on Christmas day was really a clips show with just a little new story thrown in. This is probably the most complete Christmas I have, but I hope that I can change that. Keep checking back for both new years and updates.

The first story we run into is Holly and Fletcher. During Christmas 1994, Alex had set up Roger so Holly thought he had been lying to her and cheating (for probably the first time in his life Roger was doing neither and was truly heart and soul committed to her). Holly dumped him that day and Roger failed to win her back and she is now married to Fletcher and they have just discovered they are pregnant and their baby has Downs Syndrome, the future Meg Reade. Holly, of course, still has a connection to Roger, but has convinced herself how evil he is. Fletcher, Holly, and Holly’s mother Barbara (the same actress from the 1970s) are back in town struggling over what to do about it.

Hart Jesup is back in town. He left town in a bad place. He was the unknowing father of Peter Jesup whose identity has now been established and whose custody is being shared between his biological mother Bridget Reardon and his sort of adopted mom Vanessa Chamberlain. Now Hart is taking an interest in Peter and David Grant, who has been hoping his good friendship with Bridget might turn into more, isn’t too happy about it. Hart also has a score to settle with his father and has decided that Roger’s hot young wife Dinah is the best tool in his kit. Roger doesn’t care beans about Dinah, but he’s talked her into handing over her inheritance. Usually streetwise Dinah feels so rebellious and blown away by Roger’s attention that she’s not thinking.

Rick Bauer hadn’t made it back to Springfield for Christmas last year still being in Chicago. While in Chicago he’d married fellow addict, enabler, and nurse Annie Dutton, not told his family about it, and divorced her again. When she wanted to leave Chicago, he got her a job at Springfield. Ever since he came back he wanted Annie back, but she was already moving on with Josh Lewis when he came back to Springfield. He’s still mopping about her. In the meantime, he’d fought Eve’s final illness and her stubbornness and lost to both. Rick had also taken over as head of the trauma unit and met Abigail Blume when he helicoptered in to save a local injured farmer. He and Reva were both instrumental in getting Abby to stay and learn how to communicate with others. Abby has been nursing a crush on Rick, but he hasn’t figured this out or that he has feelings for her in return yet. Under the mistletoe is Rabby’s first kiss. Abby’s mother Charlotte leaves her in the care of the Bauers early in this run of episodes.

Annie and Josh were about to be married and go live in the Land of Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams. Alan had been encouraging Reva to let well enough alone and leave Springfield with him. After a series of near misses with various people, Alex found out for sure that she was alive and interrupted Josh and Annie’s wedding to tell him. He found her and Alan drinking champagne on his private jet and has reacted badly. Annie who had already fought off Ghost Reva, barely, did not take this new challenge well. The kids, especially Marah, are also really upset by Reva’s return.

Meanwhile Alan-Michael and Lucy Cooper are in the middle of the Brent Lawrence/Marian Crane storyline. Marian is determined to make Lucy pay for “leading him on and then crying rape.” Really he did rape her. Brent had already been discovered by Nadine who he killed and dropped into the lake without letting her family know. That she was missing hasn’t been discovered for months because she was just getting ready to leave town on an open-ended trip. Her body has not been recovered or identified, but both those things will be happening soon. The Spauldings as a whole seem to be moving towards peace, except Alan is beyond furious at Alex and Alan-Michael is getting fed up with dealing with his family.

Santa Nick, who we first met in New York City with the Four Musketeers and seems to be the real Santa, has stopped by to throw a little magic to Alan-Michael and Lucy and to Nick McHenry and Susan. Susan is in the hospital because Brent attacked her thinking she was Lucy.

Wednesday, December 20, 1995

We start off with a missing Holly who is hanging out at a Christmas tree lot (that actually looks like a Christmas tree lot – unlike some in later years) after her Dr. Sedwick appointment when she discovers Meg has Downs Syndrome. See that touch between Roger and Holly, that’s what I mean when I talk about Rolly. Meanwhile back at the Reardon Boarding House, Bridget comes in upset. Vanessa takes Peter Jessup (whose custody is split between Vanessa and Bridget) to do something Christmasy. Good news, Hart is back in town, bad news he’s the kind of player scummy Hart. (Part 1)

Warning: A shot of the Twin Towers appears as part of the channel ad at the beginning of this one. Holly’s mother (played by the same person) is back. Fletcher seems to realize that Holly’s turning away from him now shows how weak a couple they are. Roger really does care for Holly and the baby. I’m sorry they didn’t leave both of them around (the real one). The Meg-Roger outcasts relationship would have been a great one to play. Back at the Bauers they are decorating the tree with the heirloom ornaments. Rick you had a near miss with Annie who turns crazy over Jeva, reach for the best thing that has ever happened to you instead. Abby’s right there. (Part 2)

Annie jumps from Rick’s dreams to showing up with presents, this is pre-crazy Annie when she was great. Frustrated that Annie is still with Josh, Rick doesn’t watch what he’s doing and breaks Maureen’s favorite Xmas ornament. Over at the Land of Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams, an angry and confused Marah is punishing her doll. Josh comes in and tries to help her feel better. An almost naked Dinah continues her confrontation with Hart. Holly confides in Roger who thinks this means she’ll have an abortion. (Part 3)

Abigail’s mother Charlotte Blume decides it’s safe to leave Abby with the Bauers and decides she needs to return home to Goshen for Christmas. Ed promises to keep Abby safe. While wrapping presents, Michelle announces she’s gotten an invitation to attend a party at the University Campus. Dinah tells Hart that she just signed her money over to Roger in a joint account. Roger argues a case for why Holly should abort the baby. (Not sure if he’s serious or pushing her to the other direction.) (Part 4)

Rick and Annie run into each other again. Rick reaches out to Annie and she reacts badly. Josh tries to help Marah through her reaction that Reva hid the fact that she was alive. Holly and Fletcher tell Roger to mind his own business about the baby. Holly about Roger: “Nobody makes me as mad as he does.” (Yes, because you still twistedly love him Holly and heck, he’s better longterm than Fletcher. Fletcher doesn’t do long term.) (Part 5)

Holly and Fletcher discuss their options about the baby. The future Dart spar and even crackle with the creepy Hart. Michelle and Ed argue about whether she needs to be at the Bauer Christmas. (Michelle is being a brat.) Ed apparently not sure how Amish work with phones. Charlotte leaves Abby and goes home via cab. Ed to Abby: “We have to go. I’ve got your little black hat here.” Michelle continues to be a brat. Bill commiserates with her while she insists she wants to go to this party to “hang” even though she doesn’t want to drink (the main activity there) or know a single sole. (Also, they apparently don’t know that the majority of college kids aren’t at college on Christmas day. – I live in a college town, I know these things.) Marah tells Josh what she remembers about Reva. Annie comes in at end of conversation. (Part 6)

Marah wants Josh to take her to Reva Shayne Lewis Park. Fletcher and Holly talk about whether to have child. Fletcher wants to get more information, but says it’s Holly’s decision to make. Hart tells Roger he’s planning on staying in Springfield. (Part 7)

Dinah doesn’t tell Roger that Hart saw her naked, but does try to warn Roger ,Hart isn’t being genuine. He doesn’t believe her and asks for a truce. Fletcher and Barbara (Holly’s mother) talk about what happened. Barbara goes to find Holly. Abby’s ASL class preforms “Silent Night” with Abby and Rick. Josh, Annie, and Marah end up in Reva Shayne Lewis Park. Marah scratches up the way too cheap plaque Josh had put on the storm (seriously if it was that bendy it wouldn’t have lasted this long.) (Part 8)

Thursday, December 21, 1995

Marian Crane (Brent Lawrence in disguise) arrives at the Spaulding Christmas office party just as Alan-Michael is giving out the gifts. Marian corners Lucy and asks her about Susan (Nick McHenry’s AIDs positive girlfriend) who Marian had attacked mistakenly thinking she was Lucy. They don’t know this and Susan is in the hospital from the attack. Alex has brought a Christmas tree into the hospital for Nick and Susan. Annie attends an AA meetings. Nice set with the 10 steps. Alan and Reva arrive at the Reva Shayne Park. Alan and Reva are currently together. Alan wants to marry her, Reva was willing when she thought it would protect her kids, now she’s seen Josh, she’s less willing. Josh runs into them buying a Christmas tree on Christmas Eve. (Part 9)

Reva looks great! Josh and Reva argue about when she can’t see Marah and Shayne. Susan opens her eyes, but doesn’t respond. Nick and Alex decorate the tree in Susan’s room and Nick bought Susan an engagement ring. Marian gives Lucy a gift and insists she open it. It’s tickets to a retreat Marian wants them to go to together. (Part 10)

Amanda shows up at Spaulding party. She didn’t find out until this morning and Alan-Michael apologizes for not telling her himself, he assumed she knew. A-M confirms Amanda is welcome and offers her a real job at the company with responsibilities (which she didn’t have under the old regime). Lucy looks great in that outfit. Marian tries to explain her odd behavior on the rape she told Lucy she suffered. (Part 11)

Annie finally opens up about her difficulties at the AA meeting. Reva begs Josh to let her see the kids. Josh actually is making a good point about Reva, at this point, is all about herself and not the kids, although she had made a sacrifice for them. (Part 12)

Reva reacts to Marah scratching the stone. Reva takes it out on Alan which is unfair. He might have unduly influenced her to leave town, but he truly does care about her. Alan-Micheal starts handing out the company executive awards. Marian wins the best dressed award (which she actually deserves, she puts together nice professional looking outfits with style) and that makes everyone look for her and they discover her with Lucy. I understand why Marian might ignore the chanting, but why doesn’t Lucy hear it? So they only have 2 awards? Funniest and Best Dressed? They should have made up a couple more. Marian is giving LAM the most predatory look. In Susan’s hospital room, Alex urges her to wake up to see the ring. Nick talks to Susan and Santa Nick arrives. (Part 13)

CBS Daytime Holiday Ad. Nick meets Santa Nick in Susan’s hospital room. At the Spaulding party, A-M announces Amanda’s new job while Marian sets up funniest guy for a fall. (Part 14)

Santa Nick talks about Lujack with Nick. Lucy takes Marian home. Alan shows up at the company party. Alex takes pleasure in telling A-M that Alan’s friend was Reva. Reva breaks into the Land of Wishes, Hopes, and Dreams and we get a good look around. (Part 15)

Marah discovers Reva in the house. A-M is mad that Alan didn’t let him talk to Reva directly about what she knew about the man who switched Lucy’s AIDS test to positive. Why they are arguing Santa Nick arrives to warn A-M that Lucy is in danger. (Part 16)

Friday, December 22, 1995

Alan prevents A-M from leaving until A-M accepts his reason. Marah confronts Reva. Marah: “It was better when you were dead.” (Part 17)

This Marah always had the most gorgeous French braids. Reva doesn’t make much distance in trying to convince Marah to give her a chance. Really nice shot through multiple sets making it look like a real building. Marian makes Lucy uncomfortable with a predatory look. (Part 18)

Fletcher arranges to talk with a family who kept a child with Downs Syndrome. After Marian collapses, Lucy comforts her and Marian starts to tell Lucy the truth, but A-M arrives. Alan is furious Alex foiled his plan by telling Josh Reva was alive and where to find her. Alex claims it’s for Alan’s own good, Alan thinks it’s to prevent him being happy. Alan: “I don’t use the word forever often, but when I do I mean it. I’m done with you forever.” Marah points out that Reva was trying to leave when they found her. Annie and Josh come home. (Part 19)

Reva seems surprised at Marah’s bad reaction. Josh is being harsh, but he has a point. Josh: “You have to go at their [the kids’s] pace, NOT yours.” Amanda and Alan used to be close this stuff is not true, after the psychotic locked in the attic part. However, this is the Amanda attitude during this actress’ run. Holly and Fletcher talk to mother of Downs Syndrome daughter. Their daughter Samantha comes in and Fletcher is WAY over familiar and assumes the drawing a child he never laid eyes on before made was for him. (Part 20)

Alex unloaded on Nick and Susan and Nick calls her on it. Amanda and Alan have an honest, caring conversation. Alan: “This is the way I was brought up. It’s what I was taught to value.” Some very true words from Alan showing self-awareness for once. Lucy, A-M, and Marian discuss the fundraising ball to benefit Cedars they are having New Year’s Eve. Brent reasserts himself. (Part 21)

Josh takes out his frustration on the Christmas tree. When Marah says something about it, Josh calms down and talks to Marah, but makes promises he can’t keep. Holly wrongly berates where she was in her life last year (actually I think she was in a better place mentally, but others may disagree). Holly and Fletcher start their final decision about whether or not to carry Meg to term. (Part 22)

Shayne is having a great Christmas and Annie and Josh are trying as they decorate the tree, but Marah is miserable. A-M and Lucy still are shaken, but stop by Cedars to bring some cheer to Nick and Susan. A-M and Nick discuss their visits from Santa Nick. Santa Nick shows up and winks at the camera. (Part 23)
