James Stenbeck Is Released

The headline of today’s post should send shivers through the heart of every resident in Oakdale, but never fear. As readers of this blog will know, Soap Classics have been releasing sets of As the World Turns episodes. The latest one is the first ATWT set to focus on an individual characters, ATWT’s ubervillain James Stenbeck.It’s called The James Stenbeck Story and was released Thursday, May 31, 2012.

The episode originally aired Monday, November 25, 1996. Those of you who own the incredible Bauer Family DVD set (and if you don’t, go buy it) may want to watch The Return that originally aired on Friday, November 22, 1996. This is the following episode. That one featured the first episode with Mary Stuart playing Meta Bauer. Although the character of Meta had been on the radio show from the introduction of the Bauer family in 1949, when this episode first aired she hadn’t been seen in Springfield for roughly 2o years. The character does appear in the 1973 episode, also available on the Bauer Family DVD, Death of a Patriarch.  Mary Stuart is primarily known for her role as Jo on Search for Tomorrow. She was the heroine of the show throughout its run. Meta’s return both provided a spot for this wonderful actress, but also helped shore up the Bauer family who were missing an representative of an “adult” generation at the time. Although kind of annoying that she seemed to have literally forgotten all about the estranged husband she killed (Ted White) and her son that died (Chuckie), Aunt Meta was a great character and I can proudly say, “Everyone needs an Aunt Meta.” The episode on the DVD only has Meta mistaking Abby for Michelle and Phillip for Rick, but should kick up the pace in the free streaming episode. In addition to becoming everyone’s favorite advice giver and babysitter, Aunt Meta will play a key supporting role in many other storylines, most importantly in the overall arc of Manny.

The episode originally aired Friday, Aug 19, 2005. This is shortly after they made one in a series of MONUMENTAL mistakes, mostly applicably to tonight’s episode, they fired Grant Aleksander (Phillip Spaulding), thinking he’d come back any time they whistled. (He wouldn’t.) However, give them credit for making lemonade out of that lemon by keeping him a presence on screen with hints, suggestions, and one bit of previously unused footage. Alan faked Phillip’s death, but while there are suspicions, at this point people don’t know that. This is the second GusH attempt at a wedding. The first one was derailed when Harley discovered at worst possible moment that Gus had shielded Alex from being charged in her role in the drug ring. Those two stories are quite enjoyable. However, it was also sadly during the deep, dark, best forgotten Manny storyline where Danny is actually dating and smiling at (PUKE! PUKE! PUKE!) Marina. Ignore that part.

The episode originally aired Monday, Jan. 11, 1993. Despite the fact that Ed changed his name to avoid connections with his alcoholic, womanizing father Bill (Ed went by Billy as a child), whenever Ed had trouble in his current marriage he fell back into old habits of drinking or affairs or both. While Maureen and Ed were truly in love, Ed slept around time and time again and Maureen always eventually forgave him. This time Ed had grown closer to nurse Lillian Raines while she fought breast cancer. They only slept together once, but Lillian had written Ed a thank you note (no, really) and left it in Maureen’s kitchen and once Maureen found it she was crushed and ran to the Bauer Cabin to think things through alone. Most likely she would have eventually forgiven him again (she always did), but Ed wouldn’t leave well enough alone, he followed up to the cabin determined to make her forgive him right now. With predictably disastrous results.

The episode originally aired Monday, September 14, 2009. Billy Lewis finally realized that since Vanessa Chamberlain was the only woman he ever loved, he was being an idiot not making a play to get her back. Vanessa wanted a bit more than “I’m not leaving here until somebody marries us” (which he used the first time) and so we had some alternatively humorous and touching dates which still lead to a pretty fast pace to the alter.  At the same time Lillian Raines and Buzz Cooper continued to date…. and sneak off into the woods during public functions on regular intervals. After they actually arrived at the wedding Buzz asked Lillian to marry him, she said yes and an overhearing Billy and Vanessa offered to share their wedding at the last minute. Manny fans watch for Father Ray Santos who performs the ceremony.

Tina has a much different take on her character than I did. I’m afraid I’m one of the fans who never got over Lillian’s role in Maureen’s death. That’s no reflection on Tina Sloan the actress who I adore.

The episode originally aired Friday, October 18, 2002. Alexandra Spaulding returned to town in a big publicity casting stunt. Prime time Diva of Dynasty fame, Joan Collins, took over the role. While previously Alex’s attempts to take over Spaulding Enterprises made sense, this one kind of felt like an excuse. Part of Alex’s plan involved getting all of Phillip’s ex-wives to vote for her in a proxy fight. Beth and especially Harley were currently very angry with Phillip and so willingly voted against him. India and Mindy, who both hated Alexandra, had to be blackmailed into helping her.
