TV Shows Only in Soapdom Update 2017

August 9, 2017

Thanks to tips from several different readers we have fleshed out our list. Are we still missing any? Exact names preferred, but if you can describe which characters were on it on what show that helps too.

DAYTIME

All My Children

Erica Kane hosted the talk show Cutting Edge. Todd Martin also served as producer and host.

Kane was also former producer and host of Nothing But the Truth

Another World

Felicia Gallant hosted the talk show Jam Session (formerly Breakfast with Felicia)

As the World Turns

Kim Hughes hosted a local talk show for a long time called Patterns

Katie Peretti and Brad Snyder hosted the talk show Oakdale Now

WOAK local news hosted by Molly Conlin and Katie Peretti (at different times),  produced by Henry Coleman

The Bold and the Beautiful

Pam Douglas and Donna Logan Forrester hosted the Spencer Publications produced fashion show The Catwalk.

Days of Our Lives

Jack and Jennifer Deveraux hosted the talk show In the House from their house. Jennifer had previously been a TV reporter.

General Hospital

Christina Comes for Christmas was a classic Christmas movie like Miracle on 34th Street. It also appeared on One Life to Live, it was a Ron C creation. Black & white clips were filmed and shown on screen.

Guiding Light

Chelsea Reardon and Johnny Bauer hosted the talk show One on One

Nadine Cooper hosted The Love Bug

Reva Shayne Lewis hosted the talk show The Reva Lewis Show (She was eventually fired because the owners thought she was too old, setting off a drinking spree, Josh bought the station to get her show back, but she decided she didn’t want to do it anymore.) Previously Reva had occasionally covered local news stories as a reporter.

The Law a rip off of Cops focusing on local Springfield police.

WSPR local news – Dinah Marler was the station owner and frequent on air talent

One Life to Live

Access Llanview was a tabloid type show hosted by Wendy Williams  and later Carolina Bermudez

Dorian Lord hosted The View on Llanview.

Fraternity Row was a long time soap within a soap
https://glmanny.wordpress.com/2012/01/13/oltl-gives-meaning-of-soaps

Don’t have a confirmation of this title but You Never Know Tomorrow was a rival soap to Fraternity Row

The Daisy Awards were the equivalent of the Daytime Emmys:
http://www.welovesoaps.net/2009/07/classic-clip-daisy-awards-1989.html

Christina Comes for Christmas was a classic Christmas movie like Miracle on 34th Street, also appeared on General Hospital. Black & white clips were filmed and shown on screen. See General Hospital section.

The Young and the Restless

In 2007, Jill Abbott and Gloria Baldwin Fischer Abbott served as celebrity judges on the fashion contest reality show Extreme Catwalk. See a photo and read about it in the April 17, 2017 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

GC Buzz is a local gossip show. After he didn’t like the new story Devon Hamilton purchased the show and installed his wife Hillary as the new host in 2016. Hillary got the entire show/network? in 2017 and renamed the show The Hillary Hour. However, it’s very confusing what this show actually is because it’s watched online, on TVs, and sometimes they act like it “airs” at a specific time and other times it seems like they release episodes or even single stories whenever they feel like it. It’s very confusing.

PRIMETIME

Castle

Temptation Lane was a soap that Richard Castle’s mother appeared on years ago an on whose set Caskett solved a murder. Included in the “cast” was Rebecca Budig and Corbin Bernsen.

Love Boat

Carol Channing guested as a leading lady who had been on Mercy Hospital for 6 months.

Newhart

Vermont Today was Dick Louden (Bob Newhart)’s talk show.

Psych

During the second series Gus and Shawn solve a murder on the set of the telenovela Explosion Gigantesca de Romance. Shawn goes undercover joining the cast as “Chad” the delivery boy.

Twin Peaks

Invitation To Love was a soap opera the first season.

Can you think of any more TV only shows from Daytime or Primetime?

Couple Codes Update July 2017

July 27, 2017

Here’s my latest update on creating a list of couple code aka smoosh names aka the names people create for couples by combing their names. For example Manny is Michelle Bauer Santos and Danny Santos and Marony is Marah Lewis and Tony Santos. I’ve posted the list from other soaps before, but I’ve been trying to post quarterly updates to help get suggestions who I’ve missed. I’ve added more since last time, but please check for your favorites (or even the not so favorite couples you can remember). I’m a long way from having all of them for all soaps here. I think I have finally collected most of the Guiding Light couple codes, but I’m adding those below and am now branching out to collect other soaps. The shows and the names are listed in alphabetical order. All couples are eligible to be included if they are on a daytime soap opera and have a commonly used nickname or code.  I threw a few primetime ones on at the bottom too, just for fun. This list is by no means complete at this point, but I found with my work with the Guiding Light list that people tend to respond more after they see what you have.

I also have reserved a spot on the the list for anyone with a nickname that might be confused with a couple code. For example, on the Guiding Light list I’ve included Cleva for Clone Reva. So here are the couples whose name I’ve remember or had suggested to me so far. If you spot I’m missing one from any daytime soap, please let me know on Facebook, Twitter, in the comments below or by e-mailing me at Robansuefarm@hotmail.com

The Talk Celebrates CBS Daytime 30 Years at Number One

December 1, 2016

Although making a place for it in the line-up (talk shows are much cheaper to make than soap opera), The Talk has been active in promoting soaps with host Sheryl Underwood especially famous as a soap fan. Underwood has even has had small parts on The Young and the Restless. P&G fans should appreciate that they not only saluted the remaining soaps, but also reached out to our lost soaps.

http://www.cbs.com/shows/the_talk/video/xKdCLB_VezdqbBiTXJ15MR9E6IAZo2Sk/the-talk-the-talk-celebrates-cbs-daytime-reaching-30-consecutive-years-at-no-1/

In addition to clips of game shows and interviews with representatives of The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful, they arranged a reunion with four people from Guiding Light and four people from As the World Turns. In fact, Guiding Light got a bonus representative because Ellen Dolan, the original Maureen Reardon Bauer (Michelle’s mom), was one of the As the World Turns cast – Margo Hughes.

Martha Byrne shared photos from the event:

The clip introducing the hosts in 1980s costumes, their personal history with soaps and then a highlight clips montage from The Price is Right, Let’s Make a Deal, Guiding Light, As the World Turns, The Young and the Restless, and The Bold and the Beautiful.

This news story includes links to the opening and then a highlight from both The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful.

Manny Stablan on Bed

Manny Stablan on Bed

The first of the soap clips package was for Guiding Light. So somebody knew what was important. Sadly neither Danny nor either Michelle was included in the reunion, but whoever put the clips package together knew better. There were two great clips of Stalban Manny kissing. It was kind of hard to get it to freeze frame on their player, but I’ve got a clip of each one.

Manny Stablan in Their House

The other Guiding Light people were: Jeva and Billip, Kim Zimmer (Reva Shayne Lewis), Robert Newman (Josh Lewis), Grant Aleksander (Phillip Spaulding #2, adult Phillip), and Beth Chamberlain (Beth Raines Spaulding #2). They shared memories in a too short segment.

Not part of the episode the Guiding Light stars share their favorite storylines:

The As the World Turns group included: Ellen Dolan, Colleen Zenk (Barbara Ryan Montgomery), Elizabeth Hubbard (Lucinda Walsh), and Martha Byrne (Lily Walsh) . There was a lot of focus, rightfully so, on the incredible Lucinda Walsh and John Dixon into the hot tub and then got married scene. Colleen Zenk was diagnosed with oral cancer in 2007 asking them to write the cancer into the storyline. Zenk had beaten the cancer, her character was diagnosed in 2008 and then the real cancer came back in 2009. She has had many surgeries since then, but she’s cancer free right now.

Not part of the episode the As the World Turns stars share their favorite storylines:

Also here’s a clip from The Young and the Restless:

And The Bold and the Beautiful:

As the World Turns Thanksgiving Before Kennedy

November 24, 2016

Normally you just see a quick flash in Kennedy specials taking us back to November 22, 1963.

And here is the longer version with the soap opera as I describe below.

It’s a famous story. As the World Turns was on when Walter Cronkite (then the voice of security and authority in America) broke in with the news that President Kennedy had been shot. In my own family, I can tell you that my cousin was at my grandmother’s watching our stories when the announcement came on. She still remembers the exact moment. Read We Love Soaps’s version.

A lot of times the Kennedy specials will show the last 20 seconds or so before the cut in with Nancy and Papa Hughes. Unusually this clip shows more of the surrounding episode.

We open on Nancy Hughes and her son Bob Hughes (he would go on to be the coolest guy in Oakdale for 50 years) open the scene while Nancy is working on knitting a sweater for Bob’s young son Tom (later part of the supercouple ToMargo). Bob tells Nancy that he’s invited his ex-wife Lisa (the greatest soap vixen of all time and his mother’s son) and Tom over for Thanksgiving. I never saw Bob and Lisa while they were romantically together, but I must admit I spent the entire time Bob and Kim were married wishing Lisa and Bob would get back together.

At 10:00 into the clip Cronkite breaks in with an audio announcement that Kennedy was shot and to hold in. They didn’t tell the actors the news and had them go on with the scene.

Grandpa Hughes was a key character in the show. He was the one that led the Hughes Memorial Day picnic, the Hughes version of the Bauer BBQ. He was also a point of contention in the early set up. Chris had been the oldest son and had been expected to return to the farm at least part time after college. Instead he joined a prestigious practice with the future Judge Lowell here in Oakdale. Nancy had pushed him to do so and really thought herself better than the farm, although not better than the family.

At 13:00 they break in again. A few more details.

They come back to a conversation between Bob and David Stewart (David was part of Ellen and David a great model for a soap couple). They are talking about Bob’s sister Penny and trying to get I guess her significant other back into medicine.

At 17:00 they break in a final time starting the roughly 55 hours of continues news coverage and on the fifth day America went back to work.

Conkrite takes us through the days after in Four Days in November.

Set Up to Fail – Time Slip

August 15, 2016

There are a lot of factors that go into the success of a soap opera. “Success” in this case being a soap that gets high enough ratings so that it stays on the air. A soap can be an excellent example of the genre, it can have great, writing, acting, directing, sets, etc. and it still can fail to get the ratings. One of the most powerful reasons why soaps stay on the air a lot that they don’t like to talk about much is timeslot.

As the World Turns Takes Lunch

For decades As the World Turns was an unstoppable powerhouse in the ratings. Part of that was do to its timeslot which was when a lot of people would stop for lunch. People would tune in while they were eating to find out what was up with the Hughes. Now, I’m not saying it wasn’t a great soap, it’s my second favorite, but that timeslot helped. When they reshuffled the schedule and took the slot away from ATWT to give it to the Bells’s new soap, The Bold and the Beautiful, it was partially do to that golden spot that B&B’s rating were so much better than Capitol‘s, the soap that was cancelled to make room for it.

What Set Up Guiding Light to Fail?

Inspired by Dark Shadows Everyday I’m going to take a periodic look at why Guiding Light was the first soap of the great soap blood letting of the 2010s. So why was Guiding Light cancelled? There are reasons a lot closer to the end than this, but part of the reason the soap was in trouble was timeslot.

The following article from the July 25, 1995 issue of Soap Opera Weekly gives an early warning of trouble.

A published report says that as of Sept. 11 Guiding Light will air at 10 am on WCBS, the CBS owned-and-operated (O&O) station in the New York area. Spokepersons for WCBS could not comment on the move, but hinted that an announcement would be made shortly. GL currently airs at 3 pm on WCBS. The soap now has a morning time slot in Los Angeles; indications had been that Proctor & Gamble Productions, which owns GL, was hoping to stave off a similar switch by CBS’ flagship station. Such changes have traditionally been made by O&Os and affiliated stations only after receiving the network’s approval.

A syndicated news magazine, Day and Date, is rumored to be slated for the 3 pm time slot. The report said it is hoped that the show will prove a stronger lead-in to Geraldo at 4 and the 5 pm Channel 2 News.

After Affects

Sadly this did happen and having the soap schedule messed up meant that the soap was in an early morning slot in two of the largest markets. For it to work they’d show the previous day’s episode and broke the rhythm of the schedule. With this obvious dismissal from the prime daytime territory in two of the largest markets it made it much harder for Guiding Light to retain good ratings even if it was the best show ever.

Oh and Day and Date, it doesn’t seem to have done well for itself or as a lead in and it only seems to have lasted a couple of years.

What’s Going on With Harley

June 13, 2016

Harley Cooper

Harley Davidson Cooper Spaulding Mallet Spaulding came to town as one of the more successful of the show’s attempts to replicate the wildly successful Four Musketeer storyline. Her name was part of a joke in a cute meet. Her name is Harley Davidson Cooper after the motorcycle because her father’s loved the motorcycle brand. She’s played by fan favorite Beth Ehlers.

This attempt at a Four Musketeer Redux didn’t maintain its group, but did introduce a great and important group of characters including a grown-up Alan-Michael Spaulding, Dinah Marler (in a pale version), Harley Cooper, and the very forgettable Cameron. Introduced right after she gave up her baby for adoption, Harley was part of several front burner couples over the years with Alan-Michael, his brother Phillip, and A.C. Mallet. She was also very active in all the mystery storylines going back and forth as a cop, a PI, and briefly an insurance investigator.

Harley and Manny

Hayley Barr as Harley

Hayley Barr as Harley

Michelle knew Harley most of her life and got kind of close to her while she was married to Michelle’s cousin (Alan-Michael). Harley really became entwined in the Manny story when it was Harley’s snooping lead to Claire returning to town. Harley got closer to Rick after their mutual break-ups and after Harley realized she was pregnant with Rick’s baby. She was strong armed into helping with the investigation against Danny and planted the bug in the Bauer house.

Harley Isn’t Herself

During Danny’s trial we see a stranger in Harley’s hairdo and pregnancy bump. That’s Hayley Barr Sparks.

Both of Ehler’s real life pregnancies were written into the soap. Henry was born in 1999 (written in as Zach – via Phillip) and Will was born in 2001 (written in as Jude – via Rick). During both of her maternity leaves Ehlers was temporarily replaced by Haley Barr Sparks.

Who’s Hayley?

Hayley had previously played Courtney Baxter Dixon a young romantic heroine on Guiding Light‘s sister soap, As the World Turns. Courtney was romantically paired with legacy character Andy Dixon. Courtney loved romance novels and had a wonderful romantic, young love story with Andy. This clip from their lovely wedding gives a small idea of just what a fun, great, solid couple they were, look for more.

Hayley dyed her hair to play Harley. She only did a couple of acting jobs after this. Then she did an internship with Annie Leibovitz and has been a professional photographer ever since. Frankly I think they should have brought her in briefly sometime during 2009 and finished off the Harley storyline instead of leaving it hanging like they did.

Here’s an interview with Sparks and her photographer website. She currently lives in Sydney, Australia. She’s a native of Australia.

As The World Turns Memorial Day Picnic

May 31, 2016

The Fourth of July was the big patriotic holiday in Springfield, but I did manage to find some Guiding Light connections last year.
https://glmanny.wordpress.com/2015/05/26/memorial-day-roundup-2015

Memorial Day Picnic

When I was little as big a deal as the Bauer BBQ on Guiding Light was Memorial Day on As the World Turns. Every year the Hughes family would host a picnic in their back yard. As the World Turns fans waited for it all year. That makes it really surprising that it has so completely disappeared.

During the early 1980s the Hughes family lost their place at the center of the show. Chris and Nancy were reduced to talk tos and then unceremoniously “retired” to Arizona. After a couple of years they returned and once again took up their role in Oakdale society, but the Memorial Day picnic didn’t come back.

It’s Been Scrubbed

Considering how important a part it was of Oakdale society it’s amazing how little of it appeared online. I haven’t watched As the World Turns online as much as I have Guiding Light, but a search hasn’t brought up a single clip.

I remember the astro-turf type backyard and the prominent flagpole and I think a brown fence, but I’m not sure. I don’t know what a single storyline was, it was the event that I looked forward to.

What is Online

Online all I was able to find were descriptions in two blog posts. Both of these are longer pieces about the cancellation of As the World Turns. Scroll or search for Memorial Day on the pages. The first piece has a longer description, but both are former watchers who seem to have the attitude of “how quaint do people still watch those things?” but the celebration’s mention by these two posts shows just how prominent it was during the show’s first two decades.

Do you remember….

Since there is so little on the Hughes Memorial Day Picnic online I hope to post some more myself. Do you have memories of visiting the Hughes family? Please share. And please ask your older soap fans you know.

NOTE: The second one is from the Ottumwa Courier in Iowa. Don McLaughlin who played Chris Hughes was from southeastern Iowa and returned home on a regular basis so he was big deal locally which explains the honorary degree.

Grant Colman aka James Douglas RIP

March 28, 2016

As the World Turns was a sister soap to Guiding Light. Most people who visited Springfield everyday stopped in Oakdale on the way. So I wanted to take a minute and tell you about a current event in Oakdale.

Grant Colman

Grant Colman

I’m sad to report that James Douglas who played Grant Colman on and off for decades has passed away. Grant Colman was  one of the good guys. Aside from Bob, Grant was the one who was a rock for Lisa. He showed up and helped when things were bad. If I could pull one lawyer from all time in soapland to be partners with Mike Bauer, it would be Grant. That shows you how much I think about him.
