Agnes Nixon RIP

I’m very sorry to pass on that soap legend Agnes Nixon has passed on. During her long career as a soap opera writer, head writer, and soap creator, Nixon had more influence on the soap opera genre than anyone except Irna Phillips. Her first headwriter job was on Guiding Light where she wrote the landmark Bert Bauer pap smear storyline that was an early social issue and saved many lives as a wave of women followed Bert in for a test. Later she wrote a novelization called The Guiding Light in 1967.

When I started working on gathering people for the soap opera conference, I wanted to hury with hopes the people like Agnes Nixon would be able to attend. Sadly that will no longer be possible, but I’m glad to know that her papers have been deposited in a archive.

When Guiding Light was cancelled she was featured in a couple of interviews. I agree with her diagnosis about what went wrong.

Sorry to hear about her passing. I always liked her. She did so much for soaps. With out her or Irna I really don’t think soaps would have lasted as long as they did.
