Newspapers and Magazines Only on Soaps

February 25, 2019

Periodically I try to put together a list of something from the soaps. This time’s entry is newspapers and magazines. What am I missing. Since I started looking into soap opera newspapers I found out a bit from a prop newspaper collector.

Newspaper Update From a Collector

April 6, 2015

IMG_0001If you are a regular reader of this blog or my Twitter account (@Robansuefarm) , you’ll know I’ve long desired to have a copy, any copy of the Springfield Journal. In my quest I purchased copies of the Geona City Chronicle and the Port Charles Herald. Comparing the two I realized they had to be made by the same company or at least in the identical way because the filler was exactly the same. Now I know what to watch for I’ve seen the same filler on other shows. The same filler appeared as the Hazzard County Gazette in a 2nd season episode of The Dukes of Hazzard shot in 1980 and since the ones I purchased were from the 2000s they’ve been using the same filler for a long time. Check out the photos in the Port Charles Herald post and look for the filler yourself. I’d love comments about the spottings.

That’s where it was resting for awhile when out of the blue I got a very kind message from a person who collects these kind of newspapers and other props. He’s given me permission to publish his message here:

Hi, I found your January post about the prop newspapers. I collect props and can offer some info about them. Most of the newspapers in movies and TV shows today are usually created by a prop house called ‘The Earl Hays Press’ which is located in Sun Valley near Los Angeles, CA. They also make most of the custom printed paper props for the same productions, which may include signs, generic food or product packaging and labels, license plates, magazine and book covers, matchbooks, stationery, or any other custom printed material you could think of. They create these to avoid copyright issues with real companies. The filler newspaper’s inside page format was first used in the late 1980s. As late as 1985-1988 there was an older version of the inside pages in use, which had no text and alternate headlines. The inside pages were always a complete fabrication made from many combined elements. Some real headline plates recycled from old newspapers were mixed in with the fake stuff. The back page was consistent all the way back into the mid/late 1970s as can be seen by its use in ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’. Some time in the early 2000s, this back page was modified slightly, probably due to wear/damage to the original printing elements which were very old by this time. Also, the back page template was made from a real newspaper plate from San Francisco dated April of 1971. Hope this info helps! You can also google ‘recurring prop newspaper’ for more info about this particular prop. – Hill Valley Telegraph

Here is the Earl Hays Press website:
Always wanted a fake bookcover with your name on it or beer or anything else? Looks like for the right price you can have it.

Here’s a news story about them with screen capture examples:

And remember keep an eye out for that Springfield Journal for me!

1990s Guiding Light Locations

March 5, 2015

Search for a Springfield Journal

I did a quick search today for a Springfield Journal in hopes that a copy would come up. I still really want one! I’d take a photocopy, a scan anything! Even though I have a Geona City Chronicle and a Port Charles Herald, it’s just not the same. 😦

Sadly a search didn’t bring up any sign of the Journal, sigh, but it did lead to mini-miracle. It DID turn up an article from a Hartford, Connecticut newspaper back in the 1990s which tells how Guiding Light was coming to town to shoot exterior shots and it tells you exactly what buildings they used. I’ve been trying to track down exteriors used over the years and here they are! Please keep an eye out as you are watching clips and let me know if see when an exterior changes so we can work on the dates. These 1990s ones I’ve had the most luck locating.

A couple of other exteriors were shot in 1994 from Long Island, New York.

This is what I found.

These establishing shots were taken in July 1996. That was around the time they were airing Dinah and Hart teaming up to drive Roger crazy so look for these locations as you watch and let me know if you see them. I don’t know if they also changed up things like the exterior of Company, Spaulding Mansion, or the Bauer House at this same time for Connecticut locations, keep an eye out and see if they shift before and after that time.

Locations Around Connecticut

Establishing Streetscape = Asylum Street Hartford CT

Towers = Goodwin Square office building, 225 Asylum Street, Hartford CT

Spaulding Enterprises = 100 Pearl Street Gallery, 100 Pearl St Hartford CT

Lewis Oil = New Haven Savings Bank, Can you believe this is their website? New Haven Savings Bank50 S Frontage Rd New Haven, CT 06519

Springfield Journal = Connecticut Post, 410 State St. Bridgeport, CT

WSPR = WFSB-TV’s Broadcast House, Constitution Plaza – Demolished in 2009 😦

Advantage Systems = CityPlace, 185 Asylum Street, Hartford CT (Note as a refresher the article says “Alan Spaulding’s base of operations for his attempts to thwart Buzz Cooper and win the love of Cooper’s wife, Reva.”)

Film of various buildings was taken from the Hartford Civic Center roof.

“Closer to the Goodwin Square building, crew members saw an opportunity — a newspaper honor box. With prop first aid of tape, placards and a fake newspaper, it was transformed into a Springfield Journal box. After mounting the honor box on a 3-foot-tall camera case, Schneider shot it from below with the Goodwin Hotel’s red-stone exterior in the background, creating the illusion that the camera was at ground level. With a plastic branch or reddish- green leaves inserted in the frame, summer became fall.”

tweeted on 2014  Dec 30

The article is right on for what they used for what. I watched them cover the WFSB sign with the WSPR sign

 Cast and Crew listed

Francine Versalie, an associate producer

Rick Dennis, the show’s art director

John O’Connell, Director

Mike Schneider, Camera Man

Linda Mysel, Production Manager

Brett Barry, Crew Member filmed carrying a Towers vest into the front door of building as a member of the waitstaff arriving to work

The total crew assembled were: “Dennis, Versalie, a cameraman, a director, an administrator, a utility worker, two engineers and two prop people set.”

Follow Up

I’ve got an online friend who lives near who said she’d try to get some photos for me. I found specifically that Broadcast House, which was apparently a pretty historic building, had been torn down. I don’t know if any of the others have been lost, businesses moved, or buildings remolded. But I’ll keep digging and I’ll let you know when I find more.

Geona City Chronicle

May 12, 2014

IMG_0001 Those of you who follow me on Twitter (@Robansuefarm) know that one of my lifetime goals is to get a copy of the Springfield Journal. That is one of the prop papers they put together for use on the Guiding Light show. I’m now closer than ever. I bought a copy of the Geona City Chronicle on Ebay. Despite the fact that the missing Williams sibling is a newspaper man (still can NOT believe they don’t tell that story) newspapers have never played as big a role on The Young and the Restless as they did on As the World Turns and Guiding Light, at least since the retirement of Chronicle editor Stuart Brooks in the early 1980s.IMG_0002

However, they often do use a newspaper prop to advance story, often while they are reading the paper in the Geona City Athletic Club. It answers a couple of my questions though. The paper is the interior section of the paper (sadly without a masthead). Only the front and back page of the newspaper were set to fit with the story. The rest of the interior pages looked like a layout from sometime in the early 1970s or late 1960s complete with mixtures, but all the text of the story was replaced with the same four paragraphs repeated over and over again in succession.

IMG_0003 The newspaper was used in March 2002 on The Young and the Restless. It features Victor’s first wife Julia. Although I think Nikki and Victor belong together, one of my earliest memories of The Young and the Restless was Victor and Julia Newman being trapped in their burning apartment building so I have a soft spot for Julia. This was one of Julia’s last appearances on the show. Victor saw an article saying Julia was in trouble with a photo of her. He went running off and rescued her design business in Lake Forest, Martin Designs, because he thought he owed her that. They got along well, but Victor was dating Nikki again at the time and there wasn’t anything romantic. Julia was going by her married name Julia Martin. Her husband Alan Martin had just died and they had built the business together. She also reported that her daughter, Jamie, was in college. Only the first paragraph of the newspaper article actually was filled out to make the story and you can tell  that paragraph had been set in a different style. This is the part that was actually changed for the story.

Odds and Ends Three

September 1, 2011

Jack Cleveland is the business editor of the Springfield Journal in 1999.

Funniest bit on Passions ever when Teresa, Gwen, and Ethan break into the show’s theme song while coaching Teresa to give birth to Little Ethan.

Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki on The Young and Restless) was an active child star appearing in many movies and appearing on two episodes of The Waltons in 1977. Earl Hamner Jr. created The Waltons and his son Scott Hamner is a writer on The Young and the Restless.

Best line Carolyn Hinsey wrote all summer “It’s bad enough we had to hallucinate GL’s Bauer Barbecue for the last two years – how could none of the current soaps celebrate this holiday?” – August 2, 2011 Soap Opera Digest

When he first appeared on The Young and the Restless, Michael Baldwin was an up and coming junior partner at the Whitman, Walker, and Wilson lawfirm.

One of John McCook’s (Eric Forrester on The Bold and the Beautiful, formerly Lance on The Young and the Restless) first jobs was as a guide on the Jungle Cruise at Disneyland. McCook was quoted in part as saying: “Walt Disney himself once rode with me. The Jungle Cruise was one of his favorite rides, so he went on it and as he was exiting, turned to me and said, ‘Nice job, son.’ It was very cool.” According to one of my all time favorite Disney story from a completely different source, during another ride on The Jungle Cruise with an African dignitary who was having trouble spotting what was real and what wasn’t on the ride, Walt turned to him and said, “It almost looks like real water, doesn’t it?”

60th Anniversary Celebration 1997

May 6, 2010

This is the 60th anniversary celebration from 1997. Springfield is throwing an elaborate ball in honor of the 60th anniversary of Cedars Hospital (really of the show). Almost everyone in town attends, but they have diverse reasons for going and different things they hope will happen there. (Jeffery Morgan and Jenna Bradshaw are looking for easy marks for jewel robbery – he’s forcing her, Reva is trying to get Josh’s attention although she previously promised to back off because Annie was supposedly pregnant with Josh’s baby, Billy Lewis, Matt Reardon, and Little Bill are focused on the dedication of the new wing of Cedars in a then thought dead Vanessa Chamberlain, etc.) The story gets more complicated when Michelle arrives and announces there are some people in trouble out on the lake and they need to get the lighthouse going again to save them.

60th Anniversary of Cedars Umbrella Story – Adjust the volume up for these, the sound is kind of muffled, most of these clips are 5 minutes or less. (Part 1) People arrive at ball. (Part 2) More people arrive. (Part 3) Amanda Spaulding & Roger Thorpe announce their engagement. (Part 4) Harley Cooper arrives. Annie Dutton is freaked out by Reva. Annie tears into Fran. Alexandra Spaulding tears into Amanda. (Part 5) Harley grows increasingly irked by Reva’s behavior as she sees its effect on her father Buzz  Cooper and her ex-fiancee Josh Lewis. Jeffery Morgan is jealous of Jenna’s relationship with Buzz. (Part 6) Mike Bauer arrives in honor of the party. They talk about Bauer history. Meanwhile, back at the lighthouse, Michelle throws herself at Angel Boy aka Zachary Smith. (Part 7) Bridget Reardon and Nola and Quint Chamberlain arrive. (Part 8) Josh and Harley find some closure. Very nice Rabby moment involving a Bauer heirloom. (Part 9) Annie fights with Reva. Folly arrogantly ask Griffin to write a column for the Springfield Journal to add a person of color’s view point to the paper. Hart makes a fuss over nothing leading to a Dart fight. (Part 10) Jezz have a moment and then a run in with the Spauldings. Jon-Luc is making a play to get Dinah away from Hart. (Part 11) Zachary explains to Michelle that they have no future together. Buzz and Alan have a moment. (Part 12) Reva and Dinah stir up trouble with their respective tangos. Roger is unhappy, torn as usual between his desire for money & power on one side and Holly & happiness on the other. (Part 13) Reva makes a scene ticking off Alex. Zachary realizes some people on the lake are in trouble and they need to get the lighthouse going. (Part 14) Buzz grows uncomfortable watching both Jenna with Jeffery Morgan and Reva make a play for Josh. Everyone Macarenas. (Part 15) Harley blasts Reva. LAM, Phillip Spaulding, Alan & Alex have a strategy meeting  and LAM announces they are moving out of town. (Part 16) Zachary says goodbye to Michelle. He sends her to the ball for help. (Part 17) Harley and Reva make peace. Dart argue. (Part 18) Roger & Amanda who sneeked out of the party keep searching Alex’s room for papers whose existence Roger blackmailed out of Vanessa (he knows she’s really alive and in treatment in Europe). Alex arranges the ceremony for Vanessa. “Chalk it up to mysteries of the ladies powder room.” (Part 19) Michelle arrives at ball and a rescue party is organized for the people on the lake and Zachary. Holly takes care of Michelle. (Part 20) Mike Bauer has a run in with Alan Spaulding his old rival. After several digs, their talk turns to Hope and both men are effected. (Part 21) Flashbacks of Michelle-Zachary aka Angel Boy story. (Part 22) Harley and Lucy Cooper talk. (Part 23) Roger and Amanda return and learn about the trouble at the lighthouse. Roger decides to help both out of his occasional impulse to play hero (it happens on a semi-regular basis) and because he hears Holly will be there. He cleverly uses Alan as a cover for his wanting to go to Amanda. (Part 24) Jon-Luc thinks he’s making progress. I forgot Annie was involved in the Bloss twins story this early. (Part 25) Alan and Annie make a start at a new relationship. Annie asks Blake Marler to find out information on Reva (this will eventually reveal that Reva is looking for a half-sister Reva’s mother told her about on her deathbed that she had given up for adoption – it’s Cassie). (Part 26) Annie and Blake two masters at covering. Almost everyone else works together and gets the light working saving the unseen people in danger on the lake. (Part 27) Terrific shot of Jeva on the lighthouse as the light starts to spin again. Bridget mopes about Hart not being at the ball while spying on her newest rival for Hart, Dinah. Dinah describes her love for Hart and their current problems. (Part 28) Now Lillian Raines is hanging around Mike. Has she NO shame? Alan hires Annie as his nurse. Michelle realizes that Zachary is probably lost in the lake. Great Jezz connection scene. (Part 29) Alannie continue their conversation. Hart continues to “make his point” with Dinah (not sure what it is though). (Part 30) Annie changes her mind and decides to go to work for Alan. Tribute to Vanessa is set up. Across the world, Vanessa gets good news and a goodbye visit from Zachary. Theme song: “Hold onto Love” with words. (Chapter 31) Annie discusses taking up Alan’s  job offer with Josh. Jezz kiss. Zachary’s boat is found washed ashore and broken in two. (Part 32) The ceremony to honor Vanessa starts. Meanwhile Vanessa spills her guilty secret to Zachary about telling Roger Alex’s secret to keep her own. (Part 33) Dinah reaches out to Matt after he breaks down during Vanessa’s memorial service. Michelle cries over Zachary. (Part 34) Ross gives a speech about the history of Cedars Hospital. Dart reconcile. Annie grows more suspicious of why Reva has business with Ross. (Part 35) Dahlia sings “Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me.” End of this set of clips.
