July 6, 2017

Author’s Note: Welcome to the Bauer BBQ 2017. I hope you’ve enjoyed your stay so far, but the party is just getting started. Scene numbers refer to my original outline, but have included them to make it easier for me to keep track of the story.

Scene 5 – Moved into Scene 2

Scenes 6 and 7

The joyful chaos continue to grow in the Bauer House as more hands piled on. Bill and Lizzie showed up with baby Lily and stuff for the games. Little Billy must have heard and came running at full speed from the patio into the kitchen, intercepting and pushing by several adults, and straight into his father’s arms.

“DADDDDDEEEEEEE!”

“SUN-UN! How was the big sleep over?” He winked at Lizzie. “Did you manage to keep your big sis Sarah out of trouble? I told her you’d be watching out for her.”

Little Billy nodded exuberantly. “Uh-huh. Emma and Hope both started a pillow fight and they were both hitting Sarah, but Dani and me helped fight them off.”

Bill grinned at his son. “I just bet you did.”

Vanessa Chamberlain Lewis came sailing into the room like a queen with a throaty “Hello, everyone.” Seeing Bill with the new Little Billy and baby Lily she glided over. “Well how are my beautiful grandbabies today?” She bent down and hugged them both. She kissed Lily, but Little Billy had squiggled out of the hug before she could kiss him. Little Billy was seven years old now and kisses from your grandmother was baby stuff.

Mindy put the lid back on the pot she was stirring and looking around asked “Vanessa, where’s Daddy?”

Vanessa stood frostily. “I wouldn’t know.”

“What do you mean, you wouldn’t know? Didn’t you come together?”

“We did NOT! He likes to manage things so well I’m sure he can MANAGE to get himself here.”

“Oh no! What did Daddy do now?”

Vanessa opened her mouth to answer, but before she could, Billy himself came charging through the Bauer back door and into the kitchen.

“Happy Fourth!” Billy shouted following it up with a good old Oklahoma cheer!

He was met with a chorus of Independence Day greetings. He strode over to Mindy and picked her up. “Having a happy day, darling?”

“Always do at the BBQ, Daddy.”

After nodding and winking at Bill and Lizzie, Billy stole a piece of the celery Blake was chopping up.

“Hey!”

“You got to be quicker than that, Blake!” Billy added with a laugh.

Billy ambled over to Lizzie and Bill stood with Little Billy and Lily. “How is my little cowgirl and my big cowpoke today?” They giggled as he gave them each a quick tickle. They both laughed pushing his hands away.

He cocked his head up at Lizzie. “And where is Princess Sarah?”

“We just got here and I haven’t seen her yet, but apparently she’s outside decorating.”

Billy had seemingly ignored Vanessa since he came in and she had stood up and turned her back to him. However, he’d be strategically moving closer to her the whole time and now he suddenly moved, grabbing Vanessa and spinning her around and soundly kissing her. “Did you get over your mad fit yet, honey?”

“I am righteously angry. I do NOT have ‘mad fits.’ Let me go!” Vanessa stomped her foot.

Billy let her go, shaking his head.

Mindy interjected, “Daddy, what did you do?”

“All I did was….”

Billy was interrupted when a group came charging in from the patio.

“Grandpa Billy!”

“There’s my Princess Sarah!”

Sarah rushed over to hug Billy.

Michelle had come in with Hope and Danielle. Dani had headed right over to her best friend, but Billy intercepted her. He picked Dani up and held her on his hip. “Well now, Little Billy, have you ask this sweet little filly to marry you yet? Only reason I can see that Bill and Michelle didn’t get together after all was so that you two could!”

“Honestly!” Vanessa interrupted. She stalked over and took Dani out of Billy’s arms and set her down. “There now you two go play.” Turning back to Billy, “Do you think you have the right to control everyone’s lives?”

Billy splutter trying to get around her, but Vanessa had wrapped up in her ice shield and she walked out the door to the patio with her nose in the air. Billy followed after her chuckling.

Matt Reardon had come in at the beginning of Vanessa and Billy’s exchange and for the first time in a long time looking at Vanessa he felt hope. Matt’s second marriage to Joni, Maureen’s old art teacher, was on the rocks. Maybe it meant a fresh start was possible for him and Vanessa after all….

Scene 8

The crowd had been slowly growing at the Bauer House inside and out. Small groups of people were talking and on the far side of the patio Beth and Phillip were setting up for the art auction. Following in the footsteps of the auction held at the BBQ many years ago for Vanessa’s Second Chances group, this auction’s funds were earmarked for the Lizzie Spaulding Lewis Cancer Foundation.

An array of paintings already stood on easels with discreet auction numbers marking each one.

Paintings had been gifted from various artists with local connections. Jesse Blue had sent a painting. Mindy and Marah had donated fashion sketches. Trish Lewis had sent a sketch from one of her interior design projects. Reva had sent back an art photo she had taken in her travels with Josh. Beth had donated several of her own paintings and one that she had found in a corner of the Spaulding attic. On Blake’s advice Beth had built the PR for the auction around this mystery painting. What artist’s hand had painting it? Where was it from? What was its story?

While Phillip and Beth set up, Clarissa and Maureen were setting up an art project for kids. Clarissa spread out a large canvas on the patio. Maureen got the paints ready. They were going to paint a group mural and then have it stretched and framed to be hung in the children’s cancer word at Cedars to brighten it up.

Scenes 9 – 11

In the kitchen, Rick had gotten all the meat ready to grill. Rick looked over the people he was willing to trust with grilling. Like a drill sergeant he snapped, “OK, let’s head this wagon train out… Blake, you and Robbie are in charge of the chicken breasts and hot dogs on the normal grill. Jude, you’re helping me on the Bauer Power grill. Each group needs a pan for raw meat, a spatula for raw food, a spatula for cooked food, and done tray. Troops ready? March!”

Blake shook her head. “You get WAY too carried away with this, Rick. We’re volunteers you know.”

“Not today, you’re not, you’re conscripted.”

“I think I liked it better during the years you didn’t care.”

Rick seemed to deflate. “I was all alone those years. The family was gone. What was the point? It didn’t matter if we had a party pretending there was still a Bauer family in Springfield or not.” Rick brightened. “But then the year Danny and Michelle moved back, it started mattering again.”

Blake stepped forward patting Rick on the shoulder. “Rick, it always mattered. The Bauer BBQ is one of those things that keep this town centered, a community. That’s why people picked it up those years, but it really needs a Bauer at its head, at its heart.”

“Come on, ATTENT-SHion! Alright troops! March!”

They went out to the grills. While they set up Jude asked, “Why doesn’t Uncle Danny help?”

Robbie snorted.

Rick laughed and pitched his voice loud enough for Danny to hear him over by the hot tub. “Well, the one year we let Danny help we had neighbors ready to call the fire department from the fire ball.”

Danny headed over as soon as Rick started in on him. Interrupted, “What I THINK you MEAN, Rick, is that you were finally smart enough to put the man who had worked as a professional bartender in charge of the drink table.”

Jude looked impressed. “Really? I didn’t know that, Uncle Danny.”

“Yep, I used to work summer for my Tio Fedrico – on my mother’s side – at his restaurant in California when I was growing up. I met your Aunt Michelle after I got a job as a bartender at club she hung out at.”

“Wow, why were you working there? How you get from that to helping to run Spaulding?”

Danny’s face grew shuttered as old ghosts rolled up out of the past.

Rick saw the warning signs and jumped in putting his arm around Jude’s neck. “That’s a long story, bud. Let’s save it for another day.”

Danny blew out a long breath. He smiled at Rick’s back and headed into the kitchen to get the rest of the stuff he needed for the drink table.

Setting it up, he started his bar patter ….. “Come one, come all. We’ve got iced tea and lemonade. I can make a martini that James Bond would die for, shaken not stirred. I can also whip up a Black Russian, a Pink Lady, a Yellow Bird. I don’t just do colors I do places a Manhattan, Singapore Sling, a Cuba Libre…”

Billy walked up following Vanessa who still wasn’t giving him the time of day. He stopped to listen to Danny’s spiel. “Shoot, boy. You make a man want to fall off the wagon.” Seeing Vanessa looking back icily, Billy hastily added, “Not that I ever would, it was a hard fight to finally get sober. I wouldn’t throw that all away.” Vanessa moved off and Billy winked at Danny before he turned.

“Dylan,” Billy yelled. “There you are. I’ve been looking for you and Bridget. Mindy told me you were here….”

Bauer BBQ 2017 by Robansuefarm Part 1

July 5, 2017

Author’s Note: This year’s Bauer BBQ fanfic is much more like a real set of Bauer BBQ episodes. I really love how it’s turning out and I hope you enjoy it. I haven’t broken it into actual episodes, but there are obvious places for commercial breaks that I put in.

I outlined it first and mostly stuck to that numbering so I could keep track of the different storylines.  I’ve kept my original scene numbers from my outline just to keep things easier for me, but you’ll see notes I’ve included when they’ve had to change. When I realized I needed to add a scene I added an A or a B. It really should be broken up into multiple episodes and I probably would have done that if I had gotten it done early enough, but I ran out of time. If I repost it next year, I may get that part fixed when I polish it.

So the lesson is start working on your Bauer BBQ 2018 RIGHT NOW!

Bauer BBQ 2017 by Robansuefarm Part 1

Scene 1A

It was early morning at the Bauer House. Rick Bauer stood at the flag pole in the side yard of the family home. *

He looked around at the young Bauers standing around him. He looked at his children, Jude and Leah. He had always wanted children and even if he hadn’t been able to play as active a role as he would had hoped in their lives during their younger years, he couldn’t be prouder of his children. He was only sorry he never had more. There could never be too many Bauers.

Standing next to his kids were his nephew and nieces, Robbie, Hope, and Danielle. He was still grateful that Michelle and Danny had moved back from California when they had. His little sister was raising some great kids.

“OK troops! Let’s raise the flag.”

Robbie snaps the flag open with a practiced hand. He has been doing it for years. Even before they moved to California he remembered doing this with his Grandpa Ed. It is one of Robbie’s favorite parts of the BBQ. Being careful not to let the flag touch the ground, he clipped it in place and briskly ran it up the flag pole.

Rick spoke. “Every year we start the BBQ by raising the flag. The tradition goes back to picnics Papa and Mama Bauer used to have on the Fourth. They started every one by raising the flag. Papa Bauer is who I am named for. Robbie also is partially named for him. He was your Great-Great-Grandfather and I want you to remember his gratitude for living in this country, for the new chance it gave him, and all the hard work he and Mama Bauer did giving the Bauers a strong start in this country. It’s up to you to remember and pass this knowledge along so that someday YOUR great-great-grandchildren will do this and remember how glad and how proud we are to be Americans.”

Rick says something like this to the children every year when they raise the flag. He wanted to engrave it on their memories so it would be passed on.

*NOTE: The flagpole only appeared during the BBQ when they showed this scene and seemed to be set up wherever was convenient. Since we don’t really know what was in the sideyard of the house that’s where I put it and will keep it as necessary.

Scene 1B

The group trouped over to the garage apartment. It was already bubbling with talk and laughter. Mindy was right in her element as she made breakfast with the rest of the kids that had spent the night. Friends of the Bauer kids and mostly family friends before them, spending the night before meant they had early dawn help available if they needed it and kept the kids busy if it wasn’t.

Rick paused near the door to think how beautiful and happy his wife was surrounded by children. He was sorry she never had a biological child who had lived, but she had determined to be the best step-mother and aunt in the world and, as always Rick thought with a smile, what Mindy determined to do got done.

Rick walked over and noisily kissed his wife. “How are things going in here?”

“Everybody’s doing great. I’m glad the garage apartment is empty this year. This is a lot easier than getting them breakfast in the same kitchen where we’re prepping the BBQ.”

Rick silently nodded in agreement. He loved Mindy. She was a good cook now, but she was still enough of a princess that she never washed a plate. He was glad this mess wasn’t in his prep area. Rick didn’t bother with breakfast, he just enjoyed the chaos.

Scene 2

Later Rick stood in the Bauer kitchen and surveyed his domain. The rest of the year this was a kitchen, but today it was the prep area where he launched an attack to feed an unlimited number of family, friends, coworkers, acquaintances, and even complete strangers who would show up at THE place to celebrate the Fourth in Springfield. There had been a time when he had felt so shoved to the side, almost like he, heck, the BAUERS hadn’t had a place on the canvas that was the community of Springfield. He had lost heart and so had the BBQ, but ever since 2010 after Michelle and Danny had moved back he had felt all the glory of the BBQ again and moved heaven and earth to make sure each year was the best year ever.

In a way prepping for the BBQ was like emergency triage, but this was a good kind without the pain, horror, and blood. Instead the constant attention, prioritizing, improvising was of everyone remembering the community and having a good time.

“Listen everyone! It’s time for the hat ceremony….Leah, if you’re ready.” Rick bent down and Leah picked up the Bauer BBQ chef’s hat. Ed had always worn it and Rick had taken it with great significance when Ed had passed it down to him, but since this had become his and Leah’s special moment it became even more important to him.

Everyone in the kitchen paused and clapped as Leah, put it on his head, aware of what this meant. “The Hat” was always an important part of the BBQ.

“Back to work!” Rick called as the moment passed. Once the hat was on his head he felt like a general martialing the troops. He picked up his clipboard “Reports!”

“Danny, condiments!”

“Rick, I used to run a restaurant I think I can handle….” Danny protested, but as usual it fell on deaf ears.

“I said condiments!”

Danny sighed, rolling his eyes at Michelle. “There is ketchup and mustard at two condiment stations around the backyard and plenty of back up for each. The relish and onions are ready to put out. Salt and pepper shakers and napkins on each table. Everything is ready to go.”

Rick tapped the end of his pen against his teeth. “I don’t know that this idea of yours using big pumps instead of lots of normal bottles is going to go.”

“Rick, it will be fine!” Michelle broke in.

Rick sighed and made a note to ask people about it later to find out how it had gone over.

“Michelle, desserts!”

“I made 2 dozen of Grandma Bert’s apple pies this year. They are cooling as we speak AND don’t you even think of hiding one. If you don’t get any I’ll make some again in the near future, as soon as you peel the apples for me. The watermelon is on ice and Danny has his stuff ready to carve it when ready.”

“How about the ice cream?”

“You’ll have to ask Lewis about that. He and Lizzie decided to turn hand churning ice cream into a contest this year.”

Rick frowned. This was the kind of thing he expected to be consulted on. “Blake, you may have to go on an ice cream run later.”

“Have car keys will travel. Although how I became the designated errand girl…”

“We appreciate you being ready to lend a hand when needed, Blake. Salads!”

“Rick, you can see I’m finishing up the cabbage and apple salad. Frank and Buzz have coleslaw on their list to bring and the potato salad is in the fridge.”

“Bert’s recipe?”

“Nope, you always ask me, so I got Bea’s recipe this year from Michelle. I thought it would make a nice change.” Rick’s face grew stormy until she added. “I remember it was always a struggle between Ed and Maureen. I thought I’d let Maureen win this year.”

Rick bit off his protest. Since it WAS for Maureen he let it go and checked it off his list.

“Bridget, Dylan, lettuce salad bar!”

“Rick, we make it all the way here for the BBQ this year and got here extra early so you can shout at us? I think we got it.”

Dylan cut in, figuring it was better to humor Rick. “We’re still chopping. All varieties of salad dressing requested are checked off the list. We’ve got the ice and the thermometer to check all the salads to keep them out of the danger zone.”

Rick grunted. He spared a glance. “Bridget, it’s a great think you got back with Dylan. Clearly he’s the one with sense in your family.”

Bridget picked up a pair of salad tongs to throw at Rick as he turned his back and walked away, but Dylan took them out of her hand. “Humor him.”

Just then Kevin kicked at the door. Bridget wiped her hands on a towel and went to let him in. Kevin and Jason each entered carrying two large, stuffed full reusable grocery bags a piece, closely followed by Frank and Buzz weighed down by coolers.

Buzz asked, “Are you going to give us a hand, Rick?”

“Nope, that’s what these two strapping young men are for,” he answered putting an arm around both Kevin and Jason. Rubbing his hands together, he added, “You’ve brought the ground sirloin. It’s time to make some magic…Rachel Ray and Emeril have nothing on me. Bauer Burgers here we come!” *

*NOTE: The Rachel Ray etc. line came from Michael O’Leary’s appearance on a talk show making Bauer Burgers. See my making Bauer Burgers post.

Scene 3

The boys were still eating when the girls finished and moved on to decorating. Sarah Randall and Emma Spaulding were Hope Santos’s best friends. The three of them had formed Les Tres Amigas Science Club* which had made Sarah’s Grandpa Billy laugh although he hadn’t explained why he thought the name was so funny. He wasn’t laughing at their interest in science and had helped throw open the doors to Lewis Oil walking them through the operation and answering every question they had even if he had to hunt up someone to tell them all the answer.

Today Hope, Sarah, and Emma were working with the smaller girls Dani, Frankie, and Peyton.** on decorating the Bauer House inside and out to within an inch of its life. The girls were talking and laughing happily together. Little Billy was there too, as usual joined at the hip with his best friend Dani.

Michelle trusted Hope to watch out for the other children, but after that treehouse stunt with Dani and Little Billy last March, Michelle felt better keeping them under a watchful eye so when the Coopers showed up she’d slipped out of the kitchen. The kids ran around up one ladder and down another putting up flags, banners, bunting, and sparkles wherever they could.

Michelle shook her head at a lopsided bundle on one of the portico corners. She moved one of the ladders over to climb up to fix it herself shaking her head that they could make such a din. She hadn’t gotten very far when a couple of arms came around her and pulled her off the ladder.

A sardonic, but gorgeous gaze met her own. “And what, may I ask, were you doing on a ladder?”

Michelle tried to brazen it out, pretending her husband wasn’t holding her in his arms. She smoothed out her top and picked a couple of imaginary pieces of lint off her culottes. “I was straightening that bundle of course. It would be done by now, if you hadn’t had to show off those big muscles of yours.” Michelle crossed her arms and scowled at him.

Danny laughed as he put her down. “None of that little missy. I’m on to your tricks. You were on that ladder when you KNOW we agreed you wouldn’t be. I’m not letting you pick a different fight to get off the hook. I think I see where your daughter got her illicit climbing inclinations.”

“Perfectly, right – from you!” Michelle said frostily, but with just a hint of a smile behind it as she gestured towards her old balcony with her head. Then she blushed and smiled. “OK you caught me. I said I wouldn’t get on any ladders today, but it would only take me a minute to fix that one crocked bunch….”

“Correction. It will just take ME a minute. Now tell me exactly what you want me to do.”

Michelle’s smile grew downright naughty, but now was not the time, so she had Danny straighten the clump until it was perfect.

*NOTE: Les Tres Amigos or LTA was an independent oil company started in the early 1980s. The original members were Josh Lewis (Billy’s brother), Amanda Spaulding, and Ross Marler. Eventually Billy came to town and pushed his way in. It eventually was folded into Lewis Oil. Clearly the children never heard of it and why should they have….until Grandpa Billy gets around to explaining the joke.

**NOTE: Dani Santos (Manny’s daughter), Frankie Cooper (Daughter of Frank Cooper and Natalia Aitoro), and Peyton Spaulding.

Scene 4

Meanwhile in Chicago, a helmeted figure, dress all in black leather, adjust the chin strap on his helmet with the smoke visor. He pulled on his leather gloves. He approached his black Indian motorcycle. He saddled up, revved the engine and turned the bike south, towards Springfield.

Children of Springfield 2017

May 10, 2017

Back in 2014 before I could really dig into my Manny Bauer BBQ fanfic for the year I had to stop and figure out what children would be running around and how old they would be now. Sadly it’s been awhile now since we’ve seen any of them. I thought this might be helpful for anyone wanting to write a “present day” Springfield story. I’m especially looking for any Bauer BBQ fanfic of any couple, any era and I’m making myself a challenge to at least get the start of one done by July 1st, so I’m challenging you as well. And don’t worry, this year I have the Manny part of the plot figured out so I just have to decide what other people are doing around them.

I came back and did an update last year in 2016. I think it needs to be an annual post to keep us all on the same Guiding Light page. Here we go for 2017.

Manny Move Back

In the previous post I shared some of my reasoning and notes to show my work and let it stand for possible addition and corrections. I recently read a very persuasive article that said what truly made an article academic was to show your work and admit you could be wrong. So I’m admitting I was wrong. I have good reason to switch up the Marler children and switch them back to airdate birth age so I did.

Below you’ll find a list in reverse chronological order with the changes marked with an *. Please note these are often rough calculations and any of them could be subject to SORAS at any given time. Personally I like to watch kids grow up on screen, so I won’t be SORASing.

Sadly I’ve had to leave the mess age wise that is James Spaulding and Daisy/Susan LeMay/Cooper because there is just no way to leave it and no way fix it and keep any kind of continuity, so we are just swallowing it and going on. So James, Daisy, and Ashlee are all safely graduated from college now and in the young adult storyline, where no one has no idea how old anybody is. But just for the heck of it going by Zach Conroy’s age, James Spaulding should be 32 and so should Ashlee Wolfe according to Caitlain VanZandt’s age. If take James’s age when we meet him fresh out of boarding school to be 18, he should be 26 instead. At the rate she was going Daisy/Susan is probably now 4.

There could be any number of other children around, for example maybe Alan-Michael and Lucy have kids, as could any number of other people that we had lost track of on screen or since 2009. These are children that are reasonable to assume are around. I’ll gladly take suggestions of others. The only children I’ve listed are those we know on screen, plus Danielle who I created in my Springfield Bound story which Michelle told Danny about shortly after Rick and Mindy’s wedding as shown in the flashforward and so would have been born in 2011 and so is now 6.

Moved de-SORASed on my list are the Marler children. Basically our post-show triangle between Robbie Santos, Sarah Randall, and Clarissa Marler required them to be closer in age so I reverted from an approximation based on SORAS when last seen back to airdate birthdays. I had previously added Rocky Cooper in just because it still ticks me off that they basically sent him off into the attic to look for skis so I like to mention him when I reasonably can. I had used the SORASed Coop’s (his older brother’s) last on screen actors age and subtracted the difference on screen, but I decided to ignore that since Coop is dead anyway and return to airdate birthday because makes Rocky more available.

So here is my list. I’m probably missing people. Let me know who else you think should be included. Whether these children would actually be around town or not is, of course, up to you and how you plot your story.

In reverse chronological order, the current children of Springfield:

Danielle “Dani” Meta Santos, 6

H.B. Lewis IV, 7

Francesca Cooper, 7

Henry Cooper Lewis, 8

Colin O’Neill, 9

Peyton Spaulding, 9

Emma Spencer Spaulding, 11

Sarah Randall, 11

Hope Maureen Santos, 12

Leah Bauer, 15

“Robbie” Robert Frederico Santos, 16

Jude Bauer, 16

Clarissa Marler, 17*

Zach Spaulding, 18

Rocky Bradshaw Cooper, 19*

Maureen Reardon, 20

Kevin Marler, 21*

Jason Marler, 21*

A Soft Place To Land Chapter 12

Republisher’s Note: We continue to post the Manny selections from the Marony fanfic “A Soft Place to Land.” I’m not doing every chapter. Good news. This time we got a little Roarah story.

A Soft Place To Land Chapter 12

Marah held her side she had been laughing so hard.  After Michelle and her had scarfed down Buzz’s famous burgers and fries Michelle had shared some tales from the “Santos Zoo” as she called it.  From the sounds of things Michelle and Danny had three precocious children that kept them on their toes.  It was also clear that Michelle loved every minute of her chaotic life.  Her smile was megawatt as she told a story about Robbie’s continuous courting of Sarah Randall, who Marah also learned was her niece.

“That boy has done it all to woo that girl.  Last year he let the air out of her bike tires just so he could walk her home.”  Michelle smiled as she thought about her son’s ingenuity.  He had to have gotten it from his father that’s for sure. “And when he came home that afternoon he had this scared look on his face.  Guess your brother Jonathan gave him the evil eye and told him that Sarah wasn’t dating until she was at least thirty.”

“Guess Robbie didn’t like that answer.”

“No.  But he won’t give up.  I swear he plots out new ways to woo her on a daily basis.”

“Got to love his persistence”, Marah went to the fridge to grab the iced tea pitcher to fill their glasses, “Aren’t you worried about him getting so serious so young?”

Michelle waved off Marah’s concerns, “Robbie was born serious.  Once he sets his sights on something he won’t stop until he gets it.  He’s like his father that way.” She smiled coyly at Marah, “I think all the Santos men are born that way.”

Marah sat back down and sighed, “I try Michelle.  I try so hard.  I look through the photo albums, I listen to the stories, but I still can’t remember.  Even worse is that every morning Tony looks at me with hope, hope that some spark of a memory has surfaced and every day I have to watch as that hope is snuffed out.

Michelle reached across the table and held her friend’s hand in comfort, “I know the feeling.  The pressure to remember when you just can’t.  And all I can tell you is that it will happen when it’s supposed to happen…..”

Bauer BBQ 2014 by Robansuefarm Chapter 3

November 20, 2014

Author’s Note: When I working on writing this I had to determine who would be around and how old the kids of Springfield would be now. I expanded on this in a post, but this much I hope will be helpful here. Sarah Randall was born in 2006 and she is 8 this year. Peyton was born in 2008 and she is 6 this year. Jude Bauer was born October 12, 2001 and is also 13 because he’s during the part of the year where he and Robbie are the same age, and part of the year he will be a year older than Robbie. I’m going to pretend Leah is just a fast developer and say she’s 12 just to get her back younger than Jude like she should be in the story, but to deal with the fact we’ve already seen her as a teenager on screen. Returning to her original birthdate Emma is 11 this year, to balance her with everybody else.

I would also like to apologize. This is probably the part that most people are interested in where we see other people at the BBQ, but it’s just going to be a quick peek this year. Don’t assume if I don’t mention them your favorite isn’t attending, but I’m running embarrassingly late on this so I’m moving along quickly to finish up my plot.  I’ll try to include more people next year.

Bauer BBQ 2014 by Robansuefarm Chapter 3

Michelle and Bill brought in the rest of the stuff with Hope opening the door and holding it for them. They deposited what they brought in on the kitchen table.

Hope followed them, “Uncle Bill, isn’t Sarah with you? She promised to be my partner in the three-legged race today. ”

Robbie coming down stairs having deposited his package in his room, froze to listen, but no one else noticed.

Bill paused long enough to deposit Michelle’s stuff on the table and to swoop up Hope into his arms. “Sarah is with her daddy today, she’ll be along later, don’t worry, Squirt.”

“OK, Uncle Bill.” Completely reassured Hope danced off and Robbie came on down the stairs with a slight smile on his face.

Michelle put her load next to Bill’s as Rick came into the room. He was wearing a new apron this year that said “Bauer Power” IMG_0144and carrying the traditional chef’s hat as Leah hadn’t yet arrived to do the annual ceremonial crowning. “OK troops! I expect 100% devotion today. This is the 5th anniversary of the best little sister in the world moving back to town.” Rick paused to smack a noisy kiss on the top of Michelle’s head, “and we are going to celebrate.”

Rick paused to look around the kitchen as Blake came in the door and they all welcomed her, except for Rick who barked, “Blake, where is the potato salad? You did make it from Bert’s recipe didn’t you?”

“Still in the car. You can carry it in yourself after you assigned me to making it. And of course I used Bert’s recipe. What else?”

“No dissension in the ranks, we have to pull together people. A horde of people is going to be hitting that door today and we have to be ready!…Michelle, did you bring the ketchup?”

“I brought that all over last night, along with the rest of the condiments and I got the plain kind of ketchup Dad always liked.”

Phillip and Beth came in. Phillip carried a large Thermos jug and Beth pulling a cooler on wheels.

Rick made another check on his list. “Very good the lemonade and bottles of water. Bill just don’t stand there – start on the iced tea, you know where everything is.”

Frank came in pulling an oversized catering cooler. “Hot dogs and chicken breasts check! I’ll put the cooler by the grill and then go get the second cooler with the hamburger so you can start shaping the burgers.”

“Check, check, check!” Rick said. Really wishing Leah would get here so they could put on his hat. He always thought he looked more the commander of the BBQ once it was on, but he wouldn’t cheat. This was his and Leah’s special moment of the day and he won’t deprive them both of that.

“Coleslaw?” Rick asked Michelle.

“Ready and waiting in the refrigerator and so is the three-bean salad and the baked beans. The watermelon is on ice to cut later. I brought all that over last night and here are the relish trays I made last night.” She gestured to the pile Bill had carried in and abandoned on the kitchen table. “They just need the cling film pulled off and set out.”

“What about Bert’s apple pies?” he asked Michelle anxiously. “With everything else going on did you have time….”

“They are in the freezer. I’ll go pull them out now so they can thaw and we’ll rewarm them in the oven before we serve them.”

“Great!” Rick double checked his list for the fourth time. “When Buzz gets here with the last few things we should be ready to go.”

“Good,” Mindy said as she brought in a bag of ice and thunked it down on the counter. “Then you can help me bring in the last minute supplies and we can get this party going. AND next year I don’t care if it’s traditional or not, we’re having Oklahoma BBQ beside the Bauer Burgers and there are some buffalo brauts in the freezer you can just throw on the grill too.”

*****

It had become a tradition for Bill and Lizzie to oversee the games. Zach and Jude now settled back into Springfield life had helped for the last couple of years and with HB IV having so much energy Lizzie certainly appreciated the help. Dani, Little Billy, and Frankie were all about the same age and ran around, chasing each other in between the more formal games.  They set everything up, made sure the equipment was out from everything from the horseshoe toss to the badminton net. The traditional contests and races were the ones that people waited for though. The three legged race was a big hit with Phillip and James winning this year, although Mel and Leah weren’t far behind. Hope Santos and Sarah Randall came in first in the under 12 division. Meanwhile Henry and Peyton were tearing around trying to get into everything at once.

Next on the agenda was the egg toss. Someone who didn’t know what was going on would have been surprised to notice that the crowd was shrinking. The time was getting closer to zero hour and people were needed elsewhere. You could almost hear a clock ticking like Abby once did in a church before Ray’s first service. In spite of that the egg toss was a lot of fun with Billy and Vanessa Lewis taking the honors. Emma Spencer and Natalia Aitoro came in second. Maureen Reardon and Clarissa Marler broke up their championship team from last year in order that Clarissa could team with her boyfriend Adam and Maureen could team with Clarissa’s brother Kevin that Maureen hoped would soon be her boyfriend too, although it took some fast talking from Clarissa to get him to agree to it. Another tradition was kept when Lillian and Buzz showed up brushing off their clothes coming out of the woods right in the middle of the awarding of prizes.

*****

Michelle was distracted all day, thinking about what was to come, so she saw very little of this. She didn’t really pay attention to what anyone said to her. Only watching her kids to keep them safe, she found herself getting a little teary eyed. Having taken the last special package up to her old room earlier, she now went back in the Bauer House. She smiled as she ran her hand over the counter remembering their “celebration” there one night. Sent a scowl over to the chair in the corner where he had bled so much the night he was shot. Then she glanced back to the door and remembered Aunt Meta coming in to his welcome home party when Danny was released from the hospital following his recovery from the coma. She passed on to the short hallway that led up the backstairs and remembered running down them laughing with Danny when they came back from their second honeymoon, where unknown to them at the time they had conceived Robbie. She walked on up the stairs, ready now to open that special package. She placed it on her bed and unzipped it. She continued to stare at it when suddenly there was a knock on her door.

“Hey, look who’s here from New York!” Drew came into the room, “I’ve come to help you get ready.”

*****

The games began to close down early, everything was a little rushed this year because of what was going to happen before the fireworks started. Finally Rick appeared having ditched the hat and Bauer Power apron and invited everyone over next door to the Spaulding backyard.

Guiding Light September 18, 2009 Remembered

September 20, 2014
Last Episode at Park

Manny Last Episode at Park

I have been wanting to watch the last two weeks of Guiding Light again in real time. It ended up being a bad time for me to do the whole thing this month, but I’m going to finish out the week in honor of the five year anniversary of the final episode. In each post, I looked for a bright spot in the cancellation and also look for the line of the day which is in many of these posts.

Final Episode – Sept. 18, 2009

NOTE: During the last couple of months of Guiding Light, I did a daily feedback and summary post. I had just started my blog and it was an early experiment that helped establish my style. I put comments and summaries on the same storyline together, with time tags to the different parts of the episode. I put the official CBS link at the end. Sadly that is no long viable so I’m going to put the YouTube link at the beginning instead. The time codes are for a full episode load and so won’t match, but should still give you a rough idea. Also the parts are on a playlist in the wrong order, so you have to watch or it will jump to different parts of the last week, if you don’t watch it. Once again I put the most important stuff (Manny and the Bauers) at the top.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCLkuCAWsXw

22:51 The Bauer-Santos family is having a picnic at the park. Manny is on a blanket and Mindy and Rick are horsing around. They spot Phillip and Beth coming from a distance and Mindy goes to hide as Robbie and Hope run up to their parents. Hope plops herself on Michelle’s lap and Robbie sits where he can look with hero worship at his father. Phillip and Beth seem thrilled that Manny is back. (Then again who isn’t? –  joyful sniff). Phillip always did see Michelle as another little sister. But it only gets better when Mindy pops out and tells them she’s staying.  Line of the Day – Rick: “The Four Muskateers Ride Again.”

27:45 – 1 Year Later – Manny, Phillip and Beth, and Rick and Mindy are all in the patio/formal garden courtyard of the Spaulding Mansion. Everybody notice that Michelle has DANNY wearing PINK today. Guess they are really are one person now. 😉 Danny makes a toast to Rick and Mindy. Rick and Mindy are getting married tomorrow and Phillip is serving as the best man. (I wonder if Danny will be an usher? They certainly seem to be of the bridal party even if Danny is a hair underdressed.) Manny is fully accepted as one of the group and Danny and both Phillip and Rick seem totally at ease with each other. Michelle insists they get a group photo. [I hope they post that one to the website – sadly they didn’t 😦 ] Manny is safe, they are happy, they are in sync, they are in Springfield, they are accepted, they are home. THANK YOU! If we can’t see them, we can at least know that, for sure, forever.

35:01 During the Happily Ever After Montage, the group at the Spaulding Mansion share a champagne toast. It just feels so right. This is where all belong, together.

Today’s episode started with a short montage of various openings they had over the years and the motto, “There is a destiny that makes us family.” [Minute 0] As I’ve mentioned before they’ve been updating the opening montage every single day for awhile now. Today included most of the cast’s photos (no Manny ;-(  ) and they seemed to suddenly remember that they these were not individual characters, but families. If they had remembered that earlier, maybe they’d done better these last few years. [Minute 4]

The Cooper family and various extensions and hanger on-ers are gathered at Company, still discussing names for the new baby. Frank admits he has a date. James and Daisy come in and she announces she’s going to Berkley, like now. Ashlee and Daisy had planned for years to go to college together, but this Berkley business was leaving Ashlee behind. Doris calls Ashlee down to her office and as a good will gesture she got Ashlee admitted at their writing program, so they can still go together. This is a real big thing for Doris who has previously gone WAY out of her way to destroy every relationship Ashlee had with anyone else. [Minute 1] Ashlee tells Daisy they can go to college together after all. [Minute 4]

Remy and Christina are worrying about being legally married before the baby comes, so they are looking for Mel. [Minute 2] Mel is still otherwise occupied, but for some reason answers her door anyway. In a sheet. The door opens farther and they see Cyrus naked in Mel’s bed and Remy ACTUALLY asks, “What’s he doing here?” Yeah, Remy is DEFINITELY material for the SFPD. [Minute 5] They get all the Coopers over to the police station and Doris performs a quickie legal marriage and then they all rush over to say goodbye to Daisy and Ashlee. [Minute 10] Daisy and Ashlee are driving. So they need to take off now. (Daisy really needs to quit wearing that pair of shorts unless she’s alone with James in private.) Reva and Billy make it for the send off too. Marina, as usual, shows her selfless nature, “You know you’re leaving me alone to be the only Cooper girl.” James and Daisy exchange “I love yous.” I don’t remember them actually saying it before. [Minute 17] Blake and Frank both hurry off, not realizing they are going to meet each other. [Minute 18] They meet on the bridge and slowly it dawns on them they are meeting each other. [Minute 20]They decide they’ll try dating. (Why not, they’ve already worked together twice and slept together, was it just once or more, well never mind.) [Minute 21]

Lizzie and Bill are talking about whether Alex welcoming Fletcher back in her life is a wise idea. Lizzie doesn’t know Fletcher, which is right, she was in Arizona with Phillip and Beth and before that very, very little when Alex was with Fletcher. Bill does know Fletcher, which is also right. He was his best friend’s (Ben Reade) father. Still they haven’t mentioned the elephant in the room, Ben.  Fletcher overhears and says he promises to keep Alex out of trouble. Yeah, right Fletcher, you never could control her and you usually didn’t bother to try that’s why the relationship lasted longer than about any of your other ones. Phillip and Beth come in and seem glad, in a long time no see kind of way, to see Fletcher. [Minute 2] Lizzie is still upset about Alex leaving, partly out of concern, partly out of having to face another goodbye. Alex has been the family member closest to her the last few years and they bonded, first over their involvement with Cooper men (Alex with Buzz and Lizzie with Coop) and later over similar life experiences. Although they again never said explicitly (ARGGGH), both of them had their children taken away from them and were unable to raise them themselves. (Alex had Lujack and Nick McHenry, their father who was a creep extreme, sold Nick and off a bribe from Brandon – I’ve mentioned he was evil – kept Lujack from her.) OK, FINALLY, Bill tells Fletcher he misses Ben in their last conversation before he leaves.  Alex comes out packed to go on the trip with Fletcher. She promises to come back for Phillip and Beth’s wedding. She pauses as she gets ready to get into the car, looks back at her home while a myriad array of emotions and memories play across her face. She pulls herself in with a ragged breath, winks and blows a kiss to her family before leaving again on her next big adventure. [Minute 6]

Phillip and Beth are together talking at the mansion. Phillip: “This feels weird. I’m the oldest Spaulding living here now.” Notice behind Phillip there are actually family photos on the mantelpiece. There haven’t been family photos on any of the sets (except for Reva’s nutso Jeffery memorial)  in ages and here’s a whole row of them. Beth gives Phillip a blank book and encourages him to express his feelings in writing like he used to. Beth and Phillip kiss and then the phone rings. Phillip says “Always” ruefully and goes to answer it while Beth laughs. (I think that’s a soap opera convention joke, but you have to be a Manny fan to truly understand the pain of the dreaded phone call/interruption – Mannyacs should have bought them an answering machine. 😉 )[Minute 19] The phone call is Rick and he tells Phillip he needs to come to the park. Rick tells him everybody is here and now would be a good time. Good time for what we wonder? [Minute 20] (See the Bauer-Santos Report at the top of the page) Besides the good news above, Phillip is glad he’s in the park because he meets up with James and they seem to be in a good place now and toss around the Frisbee. (Alan and James had bonded over playing Frisbee when the SORASed James returned to town.) [Minute 24]

Jonathan, Sarah, and Reva are playing at Tammy’s cottage. (That kid is a real chatterer, Tom seems to be getting sick of it.) Josh calls Reva and asks her to meet him at Cross Creek. [Minute 3] Josh and Reva meet up. She announces that the old truck they’ve been driving around all week was H.B.’s.  Yeah, right where have they been hiding that to keep it in fully restored condition all these years? Reva and Josh flirt and he tells her his new plan is to go down and oversee the addition of the new wing on H.B.’s memorial veterans hospital (this is the reason Cross Creek is in Springfield now, they built the hospital on the original Cross Creek site, supposedly as H.B. had always planned (rolls eyes), this is was also the project they used to bulldoze Josh and nuCassie to be together with when Reva was pushing him away during her cancer scare – no, it really didn’t make sense when it was happening either). Reva cries at the thought he’s really leaving. Josh mentioned this was the latest version of his plan. Reva asks if there was another one in the middle and he admits there was. He was going to kidnap and marry her. [Minute 9] Reva reacts to the news by walking off sobbing. Josh catches her up and apologizes for telling her. She tells him she’s glad he did. She still loves him too, but she’s just not ready to commit to him again right now. She’s still dealing with too much.  He tells her he understands that, that’s why he’s giving them both some distance, but one year from today he plans on being at the lighthouse at noon. If she’s ready for him then, she should be there. Until then, he’ll be loving her. [Minute 12] Billy arrives, but misses Josh leaving. Billy asks Reva what she will do when the time comes. She doesn’t know, but I think Billy does. [Minute 15]

Bizzie, Jonathan and Sarah are all playing in the park together. Jonathan takes Sarah down to feed the ducks. Bill says he was afraid that now that Sarah was back, Lizzie wouldn’t want a baby with him, but she tells him not to be nuts. She wants children with him. She loves him. Aren’t they sweet? Bill looked so vulnerable when he asked that and it’s great that actually talk about their fears, you know like you should in a relationship rather than leave them to fester like they did before. [Minute 22] The Cooper entourage arrives in the park with all the stealth of a herd of elephants to spy on Frank and his date. Guess they closed Company again, and they are still surprised they have money troubles? When they see Frank and Blake together they go over to give them a hard time. [Minute 22] While hanging out with her family, Marina tells Shayne she’s gotten him that coaching job at the high school. (Yes, schools always hire baseball coaches when the season is over, but I guess for Marina they do.) [Minute 23] Remy, Christina, Mel and Cyrus must have gotten over the strangeness in their earlier meeting in her room and are hanging out together in the park. They share the baby news. [Minute 24]

Mindy is still in town. She’s hunted down Billy to tell him she’s made a decision. All her trips home this year have convinced her she’s sick of living in exile in Paris. She wants to be home with her family and friends and she’s decided to stay in Springfield. They are both very happy. [Minute 8]

Maureen tells her Dad Matt that he ought to be dating, too. [Minute 5]Maureen is in a play. She sets up her dad with the drama teacher. Yes, because Matt needs more drama in his life. [Minute 16] Otalia talk about how happy they are. They decide to name the baby for Frank. [Minute 11] Otalia runs into Frank and Blake and tell him they are going to name the baby Francesca, after him. [Minute 22] Reva and Olivia talk about Josh. [Minute 25]

Flash Forward – One Year Later

Now pay close attention because this goes real quick. Yes, I know they got us all ready for Thanksgiving and then totally skipped it. I’m just reporting here.

Shayne is coaching a nearly championship high school baseball team. Marina and Shayne appear to be together and she has “Biggen” calling Shayne Papa which is kind of wrong since that what they were having him call Mallet, but we know Marina isn’t too big on ethics anyway. [Minute 26]

Billy asks Jonathan to be the foreman on Lewis Construction’s newest project, the new Springfield elementary school. I think Jonathan calls him Uncle Billy, but he kind of mumbles so I’m not positive. Boy, he never did that. He must really be feeling like family. The second he put down Sarah she ran off (Yeah, I think Tom is totally over working with this kid). Bizzie shows up and after months of playing it down Lizzie is really padded out. She calls Sarah over to feel her little brother kick. I guess it will be H.B. 4th. Christina and Remy arrive with their new baby son Clayton, named after Remy’s father. Lillian and Buzz go all mushy over the little tyke.  [Minute 26]

Cyrus and Mel are still together. Cyrus and Remy are working together still in the SFPD. Heaven knows that just the last two episodes have shown that Remy needs someone to help him.  Frank is giving them a new assignment. Blake walks up with baby Francesca in her arms and she and Frank are still together. Frank: “How come she has two mommies and I’m still all stuck changing the diapers?” Buzz tells him they are picking up Rafe who’s coming how on leave.  He’s coming home by bus. (Come on, Olivia’s his step mom now, she could spring for a plane ticket or rental car.) Their family is all at the bus stop picking him up and all seem very happy. [Minute 27]

James is out at Berkley visiting Daisy and Ashlee. They are all actually wearing clothes, which is a nice change and honestly I don’t think I’ve ever seen Daisy look so happy. [Minute 28, Minute 34]

Mallet and Dinah have all their old sync back. They’re traveling around Europe together and having fun and being light hearted. Dinah playfully and softly calls out Elaine a la “The Graduate.”  They are stopped at a church and Dinah is peeking in at a local wedding. She and Mallet banter back and forth. She tells him she loves weddings and he tells her he knows, it’s why they’ve stopped at every single church in Europe. They seem almost giddy being together without any of the garbage they had to deal with before. [Minute 29, Minute 34]

The whole town is together and playing at the ballpark. Everyone is happy and there are couples and babies everywhere you look. [Minute 34] A Happily Ever After Montage with brief looks at each group begins to music.

Jonathan and Billy, still at Shayne’s ballgame, speculate on whether Jeva will reunite today. Josh arrives at the lighthouse (one we’ve never seen before by the way). Reva and Collin (who looks way more than 1 year older, I wonder if this is some cast or crew’s kid again?) start slowly walking towards the lighthouse. Josh sees them coming and he can’t wait. He jogs, practically running over to them. Josh: “I wasn’t sure if you’d be here.” Reva: “Oh yes, you were.” [Minute 30] All is literally silent as he comes over. Then suddenly, Good LORD, it’s their couple THEME music!!! We haven’t heard their theme music (or anybody else’s) in years!!![Minute 32] Reva and Josh reunite. Reva: “If you still want to be together, I’m in.” Josh (smiles, his happy full of himself smile): “That’s a good thing.” Then he takes her face in his hands and kisses her deeply.  About the final shot is the one Kim Zimmer fought for. Jeva together and kissing with the lighthouse in the background. So for once TPTB kept their word after all. [Minute 33] Jeva and Collin are going to go on an adventure. Reva brought their stuff, she knew Josh would have an adventure in mind. Reva (in a broken whisper, with one arm around Josh and the other around her youngest son, I think partly says to us): “Come on, let’s go.” (OK, I’m crying now and I don’t even like Jeva.) They walk up to H.B.’s pickup, give each other a long smiling look, get in and drive off. Josh (to Reva): “You ready?” Reva: “Always.” [Minute 35] The truck drives down a road. You can see the lighthouse rising above the trees behind them and like a classic, old movie the words “The End” come up on the screen.

And we’ve lost our way to Springfield forever. Goodbye, Farewell, Amen.

P.S. If this leaves you wanting more, please read my fanfic of scenes leading up to and surrounding the finale here:
https://glmanny.wordpress.com/2009/11/03/springfield-bound-the-finale

P.P.S I wanted to repeat this portion of my analysis of the new format.

Pacing of scenes – The last few months I was doing a daily summary of the show (you can find those descriptions by clicking on the July, August, and September 2009 blog entries) and from that experience I can tell you that a long scene was a minute, most were less than that. The last two days I thought something was wrong because I didn’t have as many times in my descriptions. I realized that it was because the average length of the scene had approximately doubled to roughly 2 minutes. The short scenes were supposed to be compensating for the lack of a an ability to block on smaller sets (again from a quote from Wheeler), but even lengthening the scenes by that much (let’s face it 2 minutes is still a pretty short scene) improved the pace rhythm and flow of the show to a marked extent. Watch an episode, even from early on in that last week and then one of the last two days and see if you don’t agree. This length and pacing was an executive decision, not one forced by money or circumstances and was clearly a wrong one and was not one that was experimented with, even though there was just over a year and a half in which multiple things could have been adjusted and tried.

Today gives us almost everything they promised us last July. Why did they wait so long? I’ve put the most important things first (the most important things being the Manny family and the Bauers).

8:55 – A rental truck pulls up honking its horn pulls up in front of the Bauer House. IT’S DANNY, MICHELLE, ROBBIE, AND HOPE SANTOS!!!!! Somewhere between the visit back for the Bauer BBQ, Danny’s reconnection with his (legitimate) business connections over the summer, and Ed’s being back so much, Danny decided to give in to Michelle’s missing Springfield (when could he ever deny her something she wanted for very long?) and they are moving back. They didn’t tell anybody so they could surprise Rick. They all look absolutely ecstatic and even more in sync than they did at the BBQ. I literally jumped up for joy when this came across the television screen – seriously I bounced off the couch and jumped. (Joyful sniff) Why did they wait so long?

Danny’s first line is “There he is” and I think it was directed at Robbie. I think he was pestering his Dad on when they would see Uncle Rick. Line of the Day – Danny announces “We’re moving back.” He said they should have let Rick know, especially since they are planning on crashing at his house at least temporarily, but like they did one dark and stormy night years ago, they just show up, boxes in hand. Michelle wanted to surprise Rick with the good news. They both look so happy together and relaxed, I just can’t get the happy smile off of my face watching them.  And in just this short scene they have definitely retained their title of Tactile Twosome. They discuss dinner. Rick says Michelle can cook. Michelle says she just drove all the way across the country and he can buy dinner tonight. Danny backs her up and they pull into one joyful group hug. (Bet Rick never pictured this the day he first showed Danny her room and told him she’d be happier without him – Judging by the smiles on all their faces, I think, for once, Rick would be glad to admit he was wrong.)

12:05 – Rick is helping to unload Manny’s rental truck. He tells Ed who’s reading the newspaper that it’s his turn to move back next, but Ed is working on a different plan.

23:25 – Rick walks into Company to order supper for 6. Rick: “Hey…I need dinner for 6 my family just moved back. Keep it under $15.”  (The jokes about Rick’s cheapness approached Jack Benny levels in the last year.) Frank (another of Springfield’s finest) does not say who moved back? Does not say is it Danny and Michelle?, once some of his best friends in town. He basically ignores Rick’s statement and blows off the order. This restaurant is going to make money how again?

30:06 – Rick comes home with dinner, calling out that he’s got the food. Manny come into the kitchen and Rick tells them, it’s so great having a family there in the house again. He was so tired of being there alone, Danny punches his shoulder lightly and tells him he hopes he still feels that way in a week. Michelle is falling back into happy homemaker mode (if that cleaning out the frig scene between Rick and Ed was any indication the old home place needs it) and tells Danny, Rick will be even happier in a week because she’ll be cooking and doing his laundry. Robbie and Hope have discovered Rick’s video games and are already making themselves at home. They must, at least subconsciously, remember living there before. Ed though has disappeared.

30:34 – (Ok, I admit it, I jumped up and down here, too.) Ed has shown up at Holly’s door and I thought I was just going to have imagine something like this happened. After all the disappointments the show has dealt us, it’s too good to be true. Ed seems happier, more sure of himself, and more relaxed than I’ve seen him since Danny rescued him from Africa, heck, maybe since Maureen died. He’s even wearing cruise wear and cool shades. Everything with Phillip and Alan has convinced Ed to grab what he wants out of life and quit worrying about it. What he wants most right now is Holly. Holly starts to ask a practical question and then thinking about what she saw in Ed’s eyes, in Ed’s face, the girl who fell in love with Roger Thorpe comes back out and only asks him “How long do I have to pack?” as a smile spills across her face, joy as true as any that shown itself on his son-in-law’s face takes over Ed’s features and shakes his whole body, spilling out in a choked laugh.

Alan’s funeral is totally rushed. I really would have rather they had it off screen rather than do it this way. (OK, so I can still gripe on an almost perfect day.) Bill has picked up Alan’s remains at the crematorium. For some reason Phillip feels compelled to look inside. (Like you could tell anything from just looking, unless some fool left the Woofie dog tag attached again – really Claire.) Alan seems to be in his cigar humidor. He’d like that. [Minute 0] Alex poured Alan’s cup of coffee he always shared with her in the morning without thinking. She gives it to Phillip, still not fully accepting that Alan will never come down stairs to have breakfast with her again. She talks briefly with Phillip about Alan and then when he asks, she says she’s ready to go to the memorial. She strokes the chair where he always sat as she passes by. [Minute 6] Somehow they’ve added that Alan wanted his ashes scattered in the lake to his final requests in the hospital. (I DON’T think so . 1. Alan would want to be in the family plot. After all to him, to steal a Manny phrase, La Familia es segrada. 2. As many problems as the Spauldings have had with family members coming back from the dead, wouldn’t they want the remains somewhere they could get at them for the almost inevitable DNA test? 3. Roger Thorpe’s ashes were scattered from Towers, some of them must have ended in the lake. Would Alan really VOLUNTEER to spend eternity cheek to jowl with his worst enemy, no matter how mellow he’s gotten lately? I think not.  4. How much did Alan whine about just getting splashed on at Universal Studios? Would he really request to spend the afterlife in a “Splash Zone”?) [Minute 13]

The immediate Spaulding family (and most extended family in town) gather at the lake to sprinkle his ashes. Judging by the rocks, this could be very near where Michelle killed Mick, but Bill seems to have no dark memories about this spot. [Minute 13] Apparently Father Ray, Mayor Doris, and Josh were all busy, so they don’t have a clergymen. Actually now that I think about it, they really should have brought back Josh’s mentor Rev. Rutledge, descendant of the town’s original Guiding Light. It would have been fitting to have him on this last week. So, lacking any kind of organizer, they mostly stare at the waves coming in off the lake and let its calming effect take them. [Minute 15] Beth tells Buzz to say a few words after closer family members demurred. It’s a pretty decent eulogy for off the cuff. [Minute 19] Each family member takes a handful of Alan’s ashes (with their bare hands – EWWW – the tradition is each family member takes a handful of DIRT) and slowly releases it one at a time into the lake. EW’s production models have been criticized for relying too much on music (repeated ad nauseam), but she showed great restraint here to great effect. (I’ll also add that Bill didn’t get his own handful and considering that Bill once literally saved Alan’s life, besides being Lizzie’s husband and soulmate, the omission was pretty tacky.) The entire ceremony has only the sound of the calming waves and each member gets a full beat. My main complaint here, except for the entire concept, is that Peyton, who we just saw yesterday and pretty much all the younger children weren’t given the chance to be at their father’s/grandfather’s funeral. I think that is wrong and false, especially considering how much Phillip regretted missing his biological mother’s funeral. [Minute 20] After the service, Phillip and James make tentative steps towards reconciliation over their mutual loss and a Frisbee. [Minute 23] Phillip still hasn’t been able to leave the beach. Beth is worried about him. They talk. Beth: “He (Alan) did what he wanted to do.” Phillip (with a broken laugh): “He always did.” [Minute 32]

Bizzie are checking on Alex. Bill seems especially worried, which he should be standing in for her practically adopted son and his best childhood friend, Ben Reade, who preceded her in death and so can’t be there and who Bill couldn’t save, but his name never passes their lips, which is especially odd because the next person to walk in is Ben’s father. Fletcher Reade strides in (boy, the last 10 years have been hard on him). He heard about Alan and came to see if he could help Alex which is especially nice because he couldn’t even be bothered to come back for his own son’s funeral. I wonder if he stopped at the cemetery first to see the grave for the first time? (Bitter, Bitter sob!!! – Sorry, Fletcher broke my heart once when he walked out on Claire, long, long ago, and I can’t forgive him.) “Hello, Beautiful” is what he always used to say to Alex, they lived together during almost all of Ben’s formative years, before he dumped her too. Fletcher thought she might need an old friend and Alex throws herself into his arms and totally dissolves into tears. [Minute 33]

Daisy got a call from Berkley. A spot opened up in their fall class, if she wants it and can get there by Monday, (A day we’ll never see in Springfield – Bitter, BITTER sob!!) it’s hers. She’s got 4 hours to decide. Buzz encourages her to go. [Minute 2, Minute 6] Daisy tells James about Berkley, but he’s not upset. In fact he’s really supportive of her goals. James: “I’m rich. I’ll come visit you.” [Minute 34]

Frank and Blake are still working on a name for the baby without much success. [Minute 7] While he is busy ignoring Rick’s order, Frank tells him he’s asking a girl of his dating website out. Rick teases him about it, but is pleased for his friend when she (unknowingly Blake) says yes. [Minute 24]

Remember when I pointed out that Remy and Christina didn’t have the legal papers when they got married after Bizzie’s wedding. Well, the insurance company just figured that out, too. It takes Remy (THE COP) a little while longer and Olivia had to help explain it to him. (Rolls eyes – Hey I said almost perfect.) [Minute 10] Remy tells Christina, they aren’t officially married. Christina tells Remy she’s pregnant. It takes Remy a minute to get her clue about this too. (Are we sure Remy is cut out for the police force? I’m really starting to think he was a better EMT.)[Minute 16]

Reva looks the best she has in ages. She and Jonathan are bickering a little bit and he announces he and Sarah better start looking for their own place. [Minute 3] Apparently Billy and Vanessa didn’t plan a honeymoon. Billy is back at work. Josh finds him there and tells him he plans to steal Billy’s idea and kidnap Reva to marry her, like Billy did Vanessa. Billy refuses to help. He basically says with everything going on, he’s pretty sure she isn’t ready right now. Josh is right. He should have done this a year ago. Billy refuses to help. [Minute 4] Josh’s kidnap plan goes awry when he finds Reva in the midst of the family picnic that he hadn’t checked his voicemail to get his invitation to yet. [Minute 8] Josh tells Billy, he’s back to plan A and he’ll leave town for awhile. [Minute 11] Billy tells him not now, doesn’t mean not ever, and not to give up hope. [Minute 12] Josh stops by Marina’s house to say goodbye to Shayne, Marina, and his brand new grandson. [Minute 25] Reva remembers that Cassie’s wedding present for Tammy was supposed to be a cottage. Cassie had actually bought it and she never could find it in her heart to sell it or rent it, so it’s been sitting empty. She calls Cassie to check and she wants Jonathan and Sarah to have it. [Minute 26] Josh tells Billy he’s going to Tulsa first to build a new wing on H.B.’s hospital and will take it from there. Billy wants to spend the last couple of hours together. [Minute 35] Jonathan talks to Tammy about moving into what should have been their house. [Minute 36]

Cyrus has baked some cookies to repay Mel for the ones she brought on his birthday when they broke his bed. (No, they literally broke his bed and they only had gotten as far as kissing and it scared Mel off.) [Minute 7] Cyrus gives Mel his cookies and they end up in bed and this time, no distractions. OK, I’ll give her that I don’t think I ever saw get that excited that quickly with Rick, except when they were fighting. [Minute 17, Minute 24]

Meanwhile, back in the adventure story, Richard, I mean Jeffery, it’s so hard to tell in his CLEVER disguise (I guess he never took my advice to look up the old Roger Thorpe footage for disguise ideas), thinks he has a chance at getting a clean shot at Edmund and calls Jonathan and tells him so. [Minute 10] Jeffery is up on a very industrial looking rooftop watching Edmund’s limo pull in the warehouse next door. [Minute 12] That’s it, I definitely want my tax money back for whatever government training Jeffery has had. Jeffery is supposedly setting up an ambush. He’s wearing street clothes, not a gilly suit AND using a handgun. Rifle, Jeffery, for long distance shooting you use a R-I-F-L-E. Surprise, Surprise, he’s spotted by one of Edmund’s men who struggles with him for awhile and makes him drop his handgun to an inaccessible ledge. He has no back up piece (this is the guy that boxed DANNY into a corner, REALLY?) and doesn’t check Edmund’s now unconscious henchmen to see if he was carrying. Edmund watches with undisguised glee. Thankfully the Edmund we know is back, his bad James Bond impression forgotten. He tells Jeffery they are too much alike and that Jeffery will never complete or abandon his hunt and deep down he doesn’t want to. [Minute 27]

Guiding Light September 16, 2009 Remembered

Billy and Vanessa Leave Wedding

Billy and Vanessa Leave Wedding

I have been wanting to watch the last two weeks of Guiding Light again in real time. It ended up being a bad time for me to do the whole thing this month, but I’m going to finish out the week starting today in honor of the five year anniversary of the final episode. Yesterday’s post didn’t have a couple of things I worked in to most posts towards the end. I looked for a bright spot in the cancellation and also look for the line of the day which is in many of these posts.

September 16, 2009 – Fallout from Alan’s Death

My cancellation bright spot for the day is that EW can’t mess with me like this anymore. First, she promises us Manny and we’re given starvation rations. Second, she makes us suffer with Phillip ALL summer. Then blows it off with an instant miracle cure, like it was nothing and could have been fixed at any time. Third, she makes us think Alan is going to die , too. Then he’s fine and we breath a sigh of relief. Fourth,  just when everything is fine, with no warning, no symptoms, no nothing, she kills him off for no particular reason. They don’t even give him a proper funeral. Is she TRYING to make me miserable?

Phillip realizes that Alan has really died this time. If they’re allowed to submit for Emmys next year, Grant Aleksander should have it won with this scene – just watch his face, it’ll break your heart. [Minute 0] As always when he’s in trouble, Phillip’s first instinct is to call his best friend Dr. Rick Bauer. (Bitter Sob!) [Minute 1] The last guests leave the wedding after seeing the two happy couples off.  Alex: “It gives one some hope doesn’t it.” Josh: “Now we can all go home happy.” You can just hear the grin in his voice and it breaks my heart. (Bitter sob!) [Minute 2]

Rick comes up on Phillip and Alan and then this trained Emergency Room doctor and former coroner goes into action. Does he check for a pulse? Does he do the mirror test for breath? Does he check for rigidity? No, he asks Phillip “Are you sure?” Maybe there is reason you have 38 deaths under your care Rick. (Sorry, I’m just saying.) [Minute 3] The ambulance comes, puts Alan in a body bag and takes him away. Rick and Phillip are there for each other as they always are. Rick is taking care of the paperwork, etc. Phillip is going to tell the family. [Minute 4] Phillip takes a minute on the dock to collect his thoughts and I think feel a world without Alan in it. [Minute 7]

Jonathan steps up to the plate and lets Bizzie take Sarah home with them. Jonathan and Bill come to an understanding. Jonathan doesn’t know he’s worrying about a dead man. [Minute 2] Jonathan is suffering through awful separation anxiety being without Sarah and he’s driving Reva nuts. [Minute 8] Meanwhile Bizzie and Sarah are having a great time, although Bill is a little concerned about playing dress up. Sarah is a chatty girl. She’d definitely be headed towards a recast if the show was going on.  Bill sneaks a killer kiss of pure happiness at the end as Sarah runs and plays right where he promised Lizzie she’d be, in their new home. (Joyful sniff!) [Minute 9]

James and Daisy are at it again after their picnic they clearly have had “dessert,” but if they still have that many clothes on afterward, James should ask Danny for some tips next time he’s back in town. Daisy gets a text inviting her to Rafe’s goodbye party. James invites himself along, since as he reminds her, Rafe is his cousin, even if they didn’t grow up together. [Minute 10]

Phillip breaks the news to Alex and Beth first as they are waiting in the living room. This must have been an awful shock for Beth who I think was fully expecting his big announcement to be that they were engaged. Alex, who thought they were out of the woods for a while at least, is devastated by the news. [Minute 10] Beth suddenly remembers Peyton who’s gotten like one mention in the last 6 months. Beth knows she has to tell her that her father is gone. (Too bad she wasn’t Rick’s after all. It would have made everything a lot easier.) I’ll give them credit for casting a girl for this scene, but when they went to that much trouble, why wasn’t she at Alan’s funeral the next day? [Minute 12] Phillip arrives at Bizzie’s house where they are having fun. Phillip asks Lizzie to take a walk. (Again, NEVER go with anybody who says that to you in Springfield.) Again, they choose to not let us hear the words of a key scene. We only see Lizzie react and fall into Phillip’s arms. She does a great job with this and Lizzie’s body language really shows that for one minute she’s back to being the scared, lonely little girl who idolized her grandfather and just wants her Daddy. [Minute 15] Bill calls Jonathan and asks him to come get Sarah, so she won’t be upset and Bizzie can go join the family gathering at the Spaulding Mansion. [Minute 17] Alex tells Bruno and Hilda the news. Again nice of them to cast for this, even though they aren’t the real people. At first Alex, is back to playing the Baroness, but then she breaks down and tells them Alan loved them both. [Minute 18] Bizzie didn’t tell Sarah. Lizzie asks Jonathan if he can wait for them there, so she can see her little girl when she comes back. [Minute 22] Faced with this new tragedy, Reva pulls down the last extra Jeffery photos from the Cross Creek mantle. [Minute 23] Phillip and Beth comfort each other. [Minute 24]

Otalia are packing food and memories for Rafe to take with him into the service. I think they would have given him hardship leave and put off basic until the next session starts. Frank and Rafe are packing. Rafe says his diabetes is under control now with diet, which is why as a diabetic he can join the service. [Minute 5] Rafe thanks Frank. Frank: “You’re a good boy. I stand corrected, a good man.” It’s so nice his duffel bag is Chicago Cubs that was his father Gus’s and his father’s, ultimately anyway, friend Danny Santos’ favorite team.  It was a big part of Gus’s character and a touchstone point in several of his most famous scenes. (Bitter Sob!) [Minute 7]  They have a goodbye party for Rafe at Company. Phillip wanted to tell James about Alan in person, but Beth’s phone call to her mother and Olivia’s big mouth spoiled that plan. Gee, Olivia, James is right there, maybe shouting it out to the whole room in front of him about his grandfather isn’t the best plan. [Minute 16] The news devastates the room at Company. [Minute 19] Rafe considers asking for family emergency leave. He would have qualified and should have, but instead Buzz tells him to go. [Minute 20]

James arrives at the Spaulding Mansion and thank God he isn’t blaming Phillip for Alan’s death. I was afraid he would. Instead, like Lizzie, he falls into his father’s arms mutely. [Minute 24] Olivia brings Emma back to Company and Rafe talks about their mutual grandfather. [Minute 25] Line of the Day – Emma: (To Rafe, very softly) “I’ll miss you.” I am crying now. Can’t we have a miracle cure for the show, too, please? [Minute 26] Most of the party go with Rafe to the bus stop. [Minute 26, Minute 31] The “magic” quarter Rafe gives Emma is nice, but it would have been nicer if it had been something like a bus token of Gus’s from Chicago or a Greek coin that he got when he was there with Harley. Meanwhile the Lewis family arrives at Bizzie’s house to rally round Lizzie when she gets back from the mansion. They really do see her as family now. Even newlyweds Billy and Vanessa are coming. [Minute 27] Rick arrives at the mansion and reports that Alan died of a heart attack. They aren’t sure if it was directly related to the procedure or not, but the family doesn’t want to press it. Alan had already survived more than one heart attack and it didn’t take the procedure to put him in that danger. (If you haven’t seen the double heart attack scene with Alan and Buzz take a minute and look for it now. It’s worth a look.)[Minute 28] Alex recounts her recent conversation with Alan about what he decided he wanted in a funeral. I suppose they did it this way to put it on the cheap, but I don’t believe for a minute Alan would have picked this for his funeral. [Minute 29] The Lewis clan is all in the front yard of Bizzie’s house playing with Sarah when Bizzie returns. [Minute 33] Daisy finds James. She’s just there for him. [Minute 34] Meanwhile, Alex goes to the hospital to say goodbye to Alan’s body in person. [Minute 35] Phillip stands in the now green formal garden of the mansion where he had so many fights with Alan right after he came back in February. Then it was dark, stark and unforgiving. Now it’s green and lush, but the pain is still there.  Phillip: “You did it. You saved me, Dad. You saved all of us.” He breaks down in tears again. [Minute 36]

Everyone mixes and mingles at Vanessa and Billy’s wedding reception. [Minute 0] Marina and Shayne are relishing parenthood. Lizzie and Jonathan have a talk about their future with Sarah. [Minute 1, Minute 23] Both newlywed couples stand on a balcony and kiss.  They bring back some of the old golden Buzz-Billy rivalry as they compete who can do a better showy kiss with their respective brides. [Minute 2] Mel brings Sarah and a set of papers for joint custody. Buzz asks Alex for a dance. (Kind of asking a lot because he almost married her just a couple of years ago, but they all seem fine with it.) Lillian tells Alan how proud she is of him a very nice beat putting a coda on their always special relationship. [Minute 4]

Matt shows up to pick up Maureen. This is not a good day for him. He still cares about Vanessa. Both Vanessa and Maureen ask him to stay at the wedding reception and he finally agrees. Maureen seems incredibly well adjusted to the fact that her mother is marrying another man. She even dances with Billy and tries to set Matt up. [Minute 5] Maureen, Nola, and Bridget have a conversation with Matt and then they go to do a family dance. [Minute 9] Josh (to Bill): “I’ve never seen my brother so happy.” … Bill: “Lots of ups and downs, huh? Weddings, Funerals, Weddings, It’s like the good is outnumbering the bad and everything is coming together. Everyone’s life is looking good.” Josh continues this conversation in the same vein later with Billy. He reports that Marah is “doing great” which I don’t believe for a second, unless Real Tony is still alive out there and she found him. Josh feels that he’s the only one whose life isn’t going great and he’s thinking about going back down to Venezuela and check on Lewis Oil operations down there, but not permanently. [Minute 10] Josh tells Olivia he’s leaving town and thanks her for being his friend. He talks with Shayne about where they are in their lives. [Minute 18] Josh and Frank give best man speeches. [Minute 32]

Blake has a nice moment with Frank, discussing romance. [Minute 9] Cyrus kisses Mel while she eagerly responds. [Minute 17] Josh and Reva dance and he tells her his idea about leaving. [Minute 29] Josh has a conversation with Olivia thanking her for being his friend, which she really was. They were much better friends than they ever were a romantic couple.

Daisy and James are little apart. Daisy doesn’t want to watch her grandparents making out. James is still upset that Phillip wouldn’t let him be the donor to save his life. [Minute 6] They duck out. [Minute 21] They grab some food and have a picnic. [Minute 31] Everyone else is doing the Electric Slide. Jonathan brings in Sarah and takes her to Lizzie. He announces his decision to stay in town and share custody. [Minute 8] Jonathan and Lizzie take Sarah to meet all of Lizzie’s family, including Alan. Phillip proudly says he’s her grandfather, Beth: “I’m your Mommy’s Mommy that makes me….Beth.” [Minute 20] Alan has a moment with James and tries to explain to James why Phillip couldn’t let James risk his life. [Minute 11] Alan tells Rafe about his draft dodging past and tells him how proud he is of Rafe. Rafe is leaving this very day. [Minute 13] Reva and Alan have a nice conversation, more remembering the times they almost married, rather than the stupid vendetta mess. They really make a connection and toast to their mutual grandbaby Sarah. [Minute 14]

Well, here’s the Y& R crossover. If they drove all the way to New Jersey for this it wasn’t worth it from a character/plot point a view, although it was a great gesture. They are NOT in their Y&R characters. “Catherine” doesn’t have a name and “Michael” is her young gigolo, Justin. I must admit he does that pretty well though. Vanessa knows them from somewhere else. It would make sense if it was from when she and Matt lived in Europe, but it is left unspecified just “all this way.” [Minute 11]

Beth tells Phillip she doesn’t intend to hold him to what he said about loving her in the hospital. Phillip: “Was that you? I thought I was talking to Rick.” He insists he does love her, but doesn’t push it right then. [Minute 12] Billy announces that Phillip was sick, but that Alan had risked his life to save Phillip. The entire town congratulates Alan on being a hero and they toast him. [Minute 15] Phillip thanks Alan for his second chance, Alan tells him not to waste a second of it. [Minute 21] Buzz and Alan have a nice conversation. Buzz (to Alan): “You must feel like king of the world.” Alan: “I always feel like king of the world.” The friendship part of their relationship is still on top and they admit how much it has meant to both of them.  Alan: “No, you go on. I think I’m going to stay out here a few more minutes and take in this beautiful scene.” [Minute 27] Phillip finds Beth collecting shells for a still life. Beth talks about how she thinks about painting, but never seems to find time to paint again. Phillip finds the strength for once to just follow his heart without over thinking. He asks Beth to marry him and she says yes. They are both so happy they can’t stop laughing. [Minute 25] Phillip finds Alan and told him about Beth and the engagement. He thanks him for all he has done. Then he realizes Alan is ominously still. Phillip is amazing in this scene. [Minute 34]
