Bauer BBQ 2017 by Robansuefarm Part 3

Scene 12

Back in the kitchen, a commotion sounded at the door. Rusty Shayne and Wanda Hite arrived bearing the necessities for Oklahoma BBQ. Rusty had made the trip up from his ranch near Tulsa. He barely got his load down on the kitchen table before Mindy threw her arms around his neck.

“Melinda Sue,” he said happily. “Are you doing as well as you look?”

“As fine as an Oklahoma sunrise. How are you doing?”

“Oklahoma is still less fun without you, but the ranch is doing fine.”

Rick came in a pulled a grimace. Most of Mindy’s ex-es he didn’t much mind. In fact his best friend Phillip was one of them, but Rusty was the one whose relationship went back with Mindy longer than Rick’s. They had grown up together as kids. It was her one relationship that he felt might be as strong as theirs. Rusty and Mindy had grown up together as kids. Rick was happier when he stayed down in Oklahoma where he belonged.

Rick swallowed and walked over with his hand extended. “Rusty,” he said. “Thanks for bringing the Oklahoma BBQ. I know it makes Mindy happy and people have come to expect it now.”

“Don’t mind me and Earl. We make no never mind.”

Mindy jumped in. “Wanda, now you know we see you and Earl a lot more often than we do Rusty.”

Wanda helped balance her load on the back of a chair as she paused. “Where do you want us to set up?”

Billy came in. “Rusty, what are you doing by letting Wanda stand there with a heavy load. I’ll take that.”

During this exchange and the ribbing, a woman with long, black hair pulled into a tight bun. She was dressed too formally for the party in a black suit. She quietly worked her way behind the happy group and edged into a dark corner of the patio.

Scene 12B

The Indian motorcycle continue to drive south. He passed a green highway sign saying, “Springfield 172 miles.” He gunned it around a black suburban and hurried on.

Scene 13

Beth and Phillip had the art auction entries each set up on their own easel along the edge of the patio. Each had a number that matched a description in the glossy printed guide.

Clarissa Marler and Maureen Reardon had the children’s art station all set up. They grabbed kids who arrived early and set them to work on the mural.

Mindy had come out to make sure her fashion drawing she’d donated for the auction looked right, but she had been caught by the sight of the kids playing. It yanked at her heart reminding her of the baby she’d lost and the children she and Rick never had.

Rick had caught Mindy’s expression across the patio and came up behind her. “It looks like they could use some help. Why don’t you dig in there?”

“You think so?”

“I know so. No one spreads sunshine like you do.”

Looking cheered up, Mindy dived into the kids. She started helping a girl make a dog she was painting look a little less like park bench.

The woman with the tight bun had reached the artwork going straight to the painting from the Spaulding attic. She looked the painting over very carefully. She moved back into the shadows and pulled out her cell phone. She pressed a saved number. “It’s definitely THE painting…..No, not yet. I will try to get it before the auction starts. She abruptly ended the call.

Scene 14

Molly Spaulding came rushing into the Bauer kitchen nearly running into Blake and then Buzz in the process. Her dad, Alan-Michael Spaulding, was hot on her heels. “God Dad, stop hovering. I go to college for heaven’s sake. I don’t need you looking over my shoulder all the time.”

“Princess, will you wait up. I wasn’t hovering I was….”

Both continued through the kitchen and out the back door to the patio.

Lucy came in a troubled expression on her face. Frank intercepted her with a hug. “What’s going on, Sis?”

Waving towards the door, “You heard. Molly thinks Alan-Michael has been overly protective and it’s smothering. You know he always was protective, but lately…”

“Did something happen?”

“Well, he went to visit Hope earlier this month…I’m afraid she’s not doing well. Alan-Michael can’t do anything to help her so he’s determined to keep up safe. He knows I can take care of myself, but he’s even been a bit hover-y with me and he’s way overboard with Molly. Then there was her boyfriend.”

“What about him?”

“Tom got a little aggressive with her, enough so she filed a police report.”

“Oh, what did you say his last name is? Does he go to Springfield U with Molly?”

“Yes, he goes to Springfield U, but don’t worry about putting the fear of God into him. Besides making it clear that him that putting hands on a woman like that was NOT acceptable, he also specifically made him aware at the might the Spauldings could bring down on his head. After Brent, Alan-Michael isn’t taking any chances.”

“None of us do,” Frank said pulling Lucy in for a big brotherly hug. He silently gave a prayer of Thanksgiving that it had turned out as well as it had. “I’m glad he’s watching out for both of you.”

“He’s watching over us all right, but it’s driving Molly nuts. When I was her age I was conning people out of jobs and almost ready to decide who I was going to marry. He’s got to give her some space before she does something crazy to assert her independence, and if there’s one thing Alan-Michael and I know about acting out and doing extreme things to get our way….I hope Molly can avoid learning about it.”

Lucy bit her lip and looked out the door in the direction that Alan-Michael and Molly had gone.

Scene 15

Bridget hurried through the Bauer living room towards the front door. Lillian and Buzz were sitting on the couch talking. “Is she here yet? Kat just texted she was almost here.”

Bridget through open the door and there stood Kat looking stark and formal. Bridget paused, and then both women broke into laughter as they hugged each other. Bridget wrapped her arm around Kat’s shoulders. “You’re looking great, Kat. It’s been way too long. What’s it been since we saw each other? Oh, at least a year since you came to visit us in Oakdale.”

“It’s been even longer since I’ve been back to Springfield.” Kat looked back at the open door. “Paul, Hamp, get in here.” Kat shared an exasperated look with her best friend. “You keep thinking it will get easier as they get older — it doesn’t.”

“Tell me about it. Peter’s out of college now and I still worry about him….and he still doesn’t pick up after himself.”

Both women were laughing together when Paul and Hamp walked in, Hamp pulling the door shut behind them.

Hamp looked rebellious. “I still don’t see why we had to come here to celebrate the fourth. The guys and I had pitched in on some fireworks and now I’m going to miss them setting them off.”

Kat walked over to Hamp. “Because the Bauer BBQ is the best time to visit Springfield. It’s the one time when the whole town is together and I want you to meet some of your Grandpa Hamp’s friends. You never got to meet him and I want them to help you get an idea of what he was like. I want you to see his club. Plus this is where I finished growing up. You’ll just have to put up with it. Besides here’s Bridget. You like Bridget don’t you?”

“Ya, Bridget is fun.”

“Thanks…I think.”

“Plus your Uncle Billy is here. He was Grandpa Hamp’s best friends. He can tell you about when they played football together.”

Paul broke in with a smile. “Billy’s here? Where?”

Bridget answered, “Right before you got here he was out watching them set up the grill. I’ll walk you back there….Oh before we do that I want you to meet Lillian and Buzz. Kat, you remember them.”

“Of course…. Boys, Buzz here makes the best non-Bauer burger in town. When I was your age, I used to hang out at his restaurant, the Fifth Street diner, all the time. And this is Lillian she’s the best nurse anywhere.”

Buzz shrugged one shoulder, “Not the greatest….”

Lillian interrupted. “That’s nice of you to say, Sweetie.”

“These are my boys Paul and Hamp.”

Lillian added, “Oh, I see their resemblance to Hamp. Now I think Bridget told me that you were married to Paul Frasier’s son. Ed Bauer has told all about your grandfather. He was one of Ed’s mentors and a great surgeon before he got promoted to administration, but you want to talk about Hamp. Have fun today.”

New Year’s Eve 1986/1987

December 31, 2015

The IN place to be celebrating this New Years Eve is the Blue Orchid, managed by former hospital executive and general cad Warren Andrews. Watching this in retrospect, 90s clothes had WAY too much bright color blocking. While pretty much everybody is at the Blue Orchid the young generation is away for a ski weekend at a large rented cabin. For a good summary of where we are in the story check out my post about the week before Christmas 1986.

Josh and Reva are newly reunited and Reva is barely pregnant with Marah. Dinah is newly discovered. This is still the first Dinah – really there wasn’t a lot of difference in the first two pale shadows of the Dinah we knew later and it’s pretty clear that neither would have survived life with the carnies. Except for a reasonable resentment towards Vanessa, Dinah is still a sweet girl. She’s living with her newly discovered father Ross Marler, but he’s not really ready to face a daughter he never knew is all grown up – hence the dress. Dinah instead wants to wear the dress from Reva’s wedding. That would be the second broken up Reva-Kyle wedding. Dorrie, Dinah’s once lost foster sister and the unlikely savior of India at the camp where India was sent on community service for her last crime. Reva is working as photographer, has switched from having working for the newspaper and instead is opening a studio. Dinah is being Reva’s photographic protege and working with her boyfriend Cameron on the school paper. This has got quite a bit of Simon and Jessie who dropped so thoroughly off the Springfield radar that many people don’t remember them. Check this out if you don’t.

It’s New Year’s Eve and Rick, Simon and some of the gang have gone on a ski trip. Simon and Jessie broke up a couple months ago, but she has shown up at the cabin where they are staying, to tell Simon she is leaving to go to college at Duke University, and to say goodbye.

Rick playing doctor diagnosis Mindy with a bad sprain from trying too difficult a ski run. Christine – apparently part of Alan’s latest scheme involving art and having an eye on Johnny – is the blonde. A dark hair pageboy haircut girl shows up seeking shelter from the storm. Her name is Bambie and she catches Rick’s eye right away. (Part 2)

Mindy and Rusty are sharing a bedroom since everyone has to double up since they are stranded by a storm. Jessie’s car is buried in the snow. Dinah calls Lillian over for reinforcement when Ross gives her too young a dress. Vanessa is worried about Dinah and establishing a relationship with her. Dorrie is excited and wants to dance with the grown-ups. (Part 3)

The young part of Springfield is away at a Ski Cabin (not the Bauer) cabin. Rusty and Mindy are fighting fate which currently has them sharing a bedroom. Rusty sees someone right outside bedroom window and takes off. Simon – who is currently on the outs with Jessie – comes to check on her when she tried to drive away from the cabin in bad weather.  Despite India’s recent redemption, courtesy of Dorrie her adopted daughter (the girl dancing at the Blue Orchid), she attempts to blackmail Alan with a recording of him discussing illegal business deals. (Part 4)

Kyle and Maeve are there and dancing having left baby Ben with a baby sitter. Billy has gone to Venezuela to straighten out troubles there. The man outside the cabin was a hunter, but we’re focusing on the fact Rusty has a handgun. Simon and Jessie are snuggling in the stuck car. Ross: “I hear myself saying things I promised myself I’d never say if I had a child.” Ross and Lillian have a really nice conversation. Alan tells India that the people they are dealing with are WAY more serious than he is and they better cut out this blackmail nonsense before THEY hear about it. (Part 5)

Simon and Jessie leave the car and break into a nearby cabin where no one was home. Simon: “Remind me to leave some money and a note.” – Cause you’re SO busy right now. Back at the ski cabin Johnny is talking to a blonde I don’t know and Chelsea overhears her saying bad things about her late fiancee Jean Claude who was a major jerk. Johnny finally tells Chelsea about what he knew about Jean Claude being involved with smuggling. Dinah doesn’t like Vanessa because she’s the one who gave her away without even telling Ross she existed. (Part 6)

HB excuses himself from business when Alexandra returns to the table not to bore the “little lady.” Alex tells him what she thinks of that. Hawk is working up courage to ask Lillian to marry him, but her independence talk puts him off. Dinah and Reva have a talk. Dinah manages to put her foot in her mouth over Reva’s recent romantic adventures, but is insistent that Jeva should be married before the baby is born to give her a family. (And good for Dinah — they really don’t do so well in that department.) (Part 7)

Reva ignores Dinah’s very good advice. While Dinah rejected Vanessa for a long time, she immediately bonded with her grandfather, Henry. Henry gives good advice except he totally gives Vanessa a pass on this…and everything else. He urges Dinah if she can’t really feel respect toward her mother she should ACT like she does. Dinah thinks to herself that she’s doing good not punching Vanessa out and decides it’s better to take off. Alan and Alexander have a nice conversation and Alex says she thinks she’ll find a mysterious new man in the new year. (Part 8)

Simon and Jessie make love for the first time. Cam and Dinah kiss at midnight. At the cabin they kiss around the group with Mindy/Rusty, Phillip/Chelsea, Roxie/Johnny, and a dark-haired pageboy haircut girl that I don’t recognize and Rick getting the long Midnight kisses. Who you kiss at Midnight on New Years is supposed to be the person you’ll spend the next year with. At the cabin Chelsea starts to sing Auld Lang Syne and it spreads throughout the room and to the Blue Orchid. (Part 9)

Bauer BBQ 1987 Update 2015

July 2, 2015

This is the Bauer BBQ in 1987. It’s a very special year because this was the 50th Anniversary of Guiding Light being on the air. They took a week centered around the Bauer BBQ to celebrate. It was also the 50th anniversary of the “Springfield Journal.” They used the 50th anniversary issue as a touchstone to mention many major stories of the past from the background of Warren Andrews to the fact Jim Reardon is living in Colorado to remembering the Quola wedding. They also asked for viewers to vote for what past scenes they wanted re-aired and took 5 minutes or so at the end of each episode to do things like pay tribute to Bert Bauer and to replay part of the Four Musketeer prom. If you have the Soap Classics DVDs, this week (specifically July 2-3, 1987) are among the handful of back to back episodes included in the set, although they are in two different DVD sets.

Michelle and Rick Bauer BBQ 1987

Michelle and Rick Bauer BBQ 1987

This is one of the more famous Bauer BBQs because Alan-Michael Spaulding parachute jumps in. In fact, Alan, although he wasn’t there, specifically mentions this being a memorable event at Bauer BBQs to Natalia at the one in 2008. This was A-M’s reintroduction after the being SORAS-ed and away from town for many years living with his mother, Hope Bauer Spaulding in New York and other major Eastern cities.

See for a refresher on Hope and Alan and their relationship with Manny.

This makes A-M Ed’s great-nephew, Alan’s son, Phillip’s adoptive half-brother,  and Michelle’s second cousin (he’s older than her, but a generation younger).

Jeva are actually together and happy in 1987. This must be one of those times they won the 3-Legged Race they mention in 2009. Rusty Shayne, Reva’s brother, the one Jeva’s kids are always packed off to when they are inconvenient, is back. He lives on a ranch “near Tulsa” as they always add. I always liked him with Mindy, but they sadly they never got a real shot. SIGH! Never will now. Anyway Rusty quite frequently came back for the BBQ so keep an eye out for him the rest of the week. That’s more than can be said for sister Roxie who disappears into a mental institution and is never heard from again.

The group A-M is talking to on the right includes Dinah Marler and Cameron (who’s last name I never bother to remember). They formed a triangle that became a square when a joke A-M played turned serious when they discovered Harley Davidson was the name of more than a motorcycle after all and Harley Davidson Cooper jumps onto our screens for the first time as part of this quad.

Ed and Maureen are in full BBQ mode, especially love Maureen’s then state of the art video camera which paired with Mindy’s Polaroid makes it very much of its time. They actually had much better sound and picture quality than many we have today. The structure made them more stable and less likely to have that handheld shake. NOTE that Ed is wearing the HAT.  Phillip runs the grill, too.

Phillip is currently dating the youngest Reardon sister, Chelsea. Her older sisters include Maureen Bauer and Nola Chamberlain. Chelsea is a professional singer (and in real life the actress still does concert dates with a divas of daytime group). Chelsea and Phillip were quite serious for awhile (no couple code I’ve found yet though). In fact, one Christmas Eve, following up on a conversation with Santa Nick, Phillip decides that life is for the living and thinking Beth is dead at this point, decides to let her go. Forget that huge trunk of stuff Pheth finds in the Spaulding attic in 1997, all that stuff was at Phillip’s house when it burned and all he had left was a little piece of lace and ribbon. He leaves it on Beth’s headstone, but Chelsea has already given him up as a lost cause and moves out of town to follow her singing career and on to a pivotal role on another soap.

Love Henry’s boater. Isn’t that great! And H.B. in a cowboy hat. H.B. & Henry were great friends. I love it when they are together. They are in-laws thru Vanessa & Billy. “His 2 grandfathers are fighting over him.”

In part 2, Maureen carries Michelle across the screen & then Vanessa carries Bill over to Ross & Henry. I loved Roxie Shayne, wish she hadn’t disappeared.  Will really isn’t Josh’s friend and will cause a lot of trouble. Josh was still fighting with H.B. over independence issues.

Alan was still Chris! Alan already had major heart issues in 1987. It’s amazing he lived as long as he did. Sorry I don’t remember what’s behind the cable guy’s beef with Alan or how Alan gets out of it. If anyone else does, chime in.

Mindy should know A-M, he’s her ex-brother-in-law. At least Mindy should know it before Reva. Mindy has a Polaroid. Remember those? Actually we still have one.

Ross and Vanessa are back together after she split from Billy. One of the few times when they played that they had ever had a more than a friendship.

I want a copy of the 50th anniversary issue of the Springfield Journal and one of those Springfield Journal T-shirts. I’m not sure who the pre-teen is who is in training for the Olympics. Anybody else remember?

Once again Rick shows that he knows Phillip better than anybody else and can read him through his good front. Love Mindy’s dress and Dinah’s outfit. HATE Phillip’s hat.  OK I know there are other people wearing the hats there, but he wears his the longest.

One of the things that I think they did a great job cutting back and forth between the studio and true exterior shots. I especially find the two cuts of the balloon release are especially well done.

June 30 and July 1 are prep days. The actual BBQ is July 2-4, 1987.

June 30, 1987

We open on some of the great Mindy-Rusty stuff. They were keeping Marah a few more days after they released Reva after she gave birth. Ed and Maureen are just back from Chicago where they went to watch Johnny’s little sister Lacey perform her gymnastic routine. Vanessa is in full mogul mode and looking great doing it. Alan shows back up at the office. After Vanessa leaves, Alan has a cardiac episode. Lacey shows up at Company on her own. She asks if Roxie is a waitress even though she’s not doing anything or wearing anything even in the slightest way related to waitressing. Lacey seems to be quickly developing a crush on Cameron Stewart. 17:03 “Q” John de Lancie is in Safeguard commercial. Lancie took off rather than face Johnny.” Alan ignores Ed’s medical advice for being admitted and given further tests, but does agree to go to clinic that specializes in rest. Alan always did favor Phillip above Alan-Michael and his other children. By the way, Alan continues to have heart issues and it ultimately is what kills him. 35:00 Maureen brings little Michelle in. AWWWW! Rick and Maureen think maybe someone has been in the Bauer house. Alan calls Alex to let her know that he won’t be able to make the trip to Europe to return the stolen art. Alex is truly upset by Alan’s attack, but when he insists the only help he needs is for her to return the art she agrees to do that. Alan’s clinic is in Oregon. H.B. shares with Rusty an experience of a Texas Ranger friend. I just love how H.B. always calls Mindy “Mindy Darlin’.” Billy calls her Melinda Sue.

July 1, 1987

Everyone is practically running into each other at the Springfield Journal newsroom as the hurry to get out the special 50th Anniversary edition full of stories of Springfield’s past (and tell me again WHY they didn’t offer that for sale? Even as a insert in a soap magazine or something?) 1:50 in note the gorgeous wall of family photos behind Reva. Lacie Bauer, Johnny’s little sister and an aspiring Olympic gymnast, arrives for a visit by breaking into the house. The Folgers commercial around 5:30 features the former Annabelle Simms Reardon. Lacie is close enough that Ed and Maureen went to St. Louis to see her perform, but not so close that Rick has any name recognition or to recognize her. Ed moves the Bauer BBQ-er to the flight school and takes 100 pounds of charcoal. Chelsea gets an offer to go work for rival paper the Springfield Mirror. Reva asks Roxie to be Marah’s godmother. Phillip is also working at the Journal as a writer. 36:00 Josh brings in the Lewis family christening gown for Marah and Miss Martha’s wedding gown for Reva because “she loved you like a daughter” which would be more sweet than nauseating if only Reva hadn’t married Miss Martha’s husband. Balloon releases used to be huge. They were used for celebrations and to find penpals by people who would release them with a note attached. Public opinion turned against them because they felt they were endangering wildlife.

Maeve’s Speech: “I would like to dedicate this special edition of the Journal to 50 years of life in our wonderful city and to our founding editor Irna Phillips and may her vision of Springfield be a Guiding Light to us all.” About 41:00

At 48:00 Montage of the articles that appeared in that 50th anniversary issue of Springfield Journal which makes me want to read it more than ever. At 50:00 Josh and Reva anniversary tribute, first fountain scene.

July 2, 1987 – BBQ Proper Begins

Isn’t Little Billy darling? Normally a Bauer BBQ is 100% chance of great weather.  Of course after a pretty big pop up storm it clears off completely by the time the BBQ hits full steam. This is the only year I can think of where it actually rained on the day of. Mindy is being a little overprotective and Rusty and H.B. have some nice what it means to be a man conversation. I think the best thing Dinah could do to make sure Vanessa and Ross don’t keep dumping her is to have other plans. That means that the Chamberlain House is 6 miles away from the Bauer House and the Spaulding Mansion next door. Jackson was a music producer who mostly caused trouble. (The most interesting thing about him is that the actor who played him was Elizabeth Taylor’s stepson in real life.) I don’t remember who Jackson is calling in London. Anyone? Add a comment. Aww. Henry and Little Billy are swinging by to pick up H.B. on the way to the BBQ. Johnny shows Roxie called his plane “New Beginnings” and proposed. Roxie brought Rusty a care package from the Bauer BBQ including a Bauer Burger. Michael O’Leary came back especially for the 50th Anniversary week. His character was currently living in Chicago. Great advice Rick “what matters is what YOU think about it, not Phillip.” Ed: “There’s not a tent to be had in all of Springfield.” Ed was also shocked about the cost of tents so they probably haven’t thought about renting one before. Nice Bert-Rick moment at 39:00. How did they miss the obvious Blue Skies mention by making it Clear Skies instead? Cropduster plane buzzed before jump 47:00 Parachute Jump at 50:00 It’s funny how many times in the next couple of episodes they repeat things like Alan-Michael is Alan’s son, Phillip’s brother, Ed’s nephew, “he’s half Bauer” etc. The Four Musketeers clip is Michael O’Leary and Grant Aleksander talking. There was a lot of irritation at the time because what was actually voted for was The Four Musketeer Prom. I doubt very many people had this fight scene in mind rather than say Phillip and Beth getting crowned. I’m sad to say both Rick and Phillip are half right. Phillip really is in love with her, but Rick is right Phillip will hurt her again and again.

July 3, 1987  Day After the Jump

The first link below is the full episode the second set patch the episode together from clips from a couple of channels. Things have perked up at the Bauer BBQ and things are definitely taking off. 11:30 more darling little Michelle. More Springfield Journal. 12:00 Darling Little Billy – who has been in invisible mud. This first episode sets up Alan-Michael’s life long quest to gain his father’s approval. Actually Josh is being a jerk. Who wouldn’t respect their own opinion over almost anyone else’s, particularly someone who is a young buck that tends to make rash decisions? That was a nice character moment of Dinah being interested in news. She’s never the photographer Reva is (who is a professional for awhile), but Dinah does later become a television producer so she does have a visual eye and an eye for the important. Miss Sarah should have recognized both Miss Martha’s wedding dress and the Lewis christening gown. 30:00 The Eli Simms Annabelle flashback 5 fishermen storyline mentions the police never discovered who the killer was, the audience did it was Eli Simms. Will Jeffries was truly insane, so why he seems to be Josh’s friend now he actually just doctored Marah’s records to make sure it looked like someone else was Marah’s father to hurt Josh. At 50:00 they do a tribute to Bert and much of it is replayed over the years when they talked about Bert. At 53:00 approximately is the scene where Bert first finds out Bill is alive. That’s an amazing scene and one that isn’t repeated very much. Jump) (Part 1) (Part 2) (Part 3)  (Part 4)

July 3rd was a Friday that year, just like it is in 2015 🙂 , so the story with the hotair balloon, Alan being shot and left for dead, etc. should pick up again on Monday, July 6, 1987, but I have not yet found the episode.

Mindy Lewis and Rusty Shayne

December 8, 2014
Rusty and Mindy

Rusty and Mindy

This post is another of my favorite couples posts for Melinda Sue “Mindy” Lewis and Russell “Rusty” Shayne. Sadly they never got much of a chance to be a couple on screen, but I was always pulling for them. Before Rusty I wanted Mindy to be with Rick Bauer and I understand why that was the endgame pairing, but the more healthy and complete relationships were Mindy and Rusty and Rick and Abby Blume Bauer.

Now a little background. Mindy was raised and went to school somewhere near Cross Creek it was seems to have been a small town, somewhat close to Tulsa. She attended school there through part of high school and was within a class year of Rusty Shayne. The Shayne and Lewis families were always closely connected although the Lewis clan had a lot more money and status.

Mindy later followed her father and uncle to Springfield and did her senior year in Springfield as part of the Four Musketeers. Mindy had romances with both Phillip Spaulding and Rick Bauer, including a marriage with Phillip and a miscarriage of Phillip’s baby. She also had a mismatched marriage, but gorgeous wedding to Kurt Corday, who left her a widow. Still Mindy emerged from this as plucky as ever.

It was only later that Rusty followed his sisters Reva and Roxie to Springfield. After a rocky patch as a teenager, H.B. Lewis helped get him back on the right track and eventually to fulfill Rusty’s dream of being a police officer. H.B. brought him to Springfield to help him ferret out a plan which H.B. suspected was being carried out against Lewis Oil which Rusty did and then decided to take a job with the Springfield Police Department and stay in town.

Once Rusty moved to Springfield, Mindy and Rusty grew closer. They both admitted part of the reason they had been antagonistic to each other in high school was that they each had a crush on the other. The romance soon got very adult, especially one special night before they were officially together, when Rusty bought Mindy a set of baby doll pjs. They had off the charts chemistry, but the best part was that they operated as equals. While being accepting of things about the other and being patience with each other. They both had a point at which they’d call each other out and stop the excesses of their character. They were in fact much better together than apart.

Then for some inexplicable reason TPTB broke them up by having Rusty get obsessed with a woman named Rose that he got involved with on a case. The only good thing about their relationship was hearing Rusty call her Rosie (his pet name for her) in that voice of his. Other than that Rose was the opposite of Mindy. Where Mindy was strong, Rose was weak; where Mindy was bubbling with personality, Rose in both person and personality were dull as dishwater, Mindy was smart and might get into trouble, but could also get herself out of it most of the time or at least know when to ask for help when she needed it, Rose got killed by Will Jefferies basically because of her overwhelming stupidity and lack of awareness of danger. There was in short absolutely nothing about Rose to make her worth Rusty breaking up with Mindy, but that’s exactly what he did. Rusty seemed inexplicably obsessed with Rose and even married her.

After Will killed Rose, Rusty’s obsession shifted to getting Will Jefferies. He and Mindy teamed up again to get vengeance on the man who had killed his wife and repeatedly hurt Mindy’s family, including basically tricking Mindy into marriage. One terrifying adventure later Rusty killed Will in self-defense and helped save Mindy.

Once they were operating as equal partners again, Mindy and Rusty once again got involved. There was some tension because how dangerous Rusty’s job was, but the main thing that broke them up was that Rusty was offered a job as chief of the Tulsa Police Department. He wanted Mindy to go with him, but she felt she needed to stay and support her family. They talked as if they would try to maintain their relationship long distance, or failing that finding each other in future, but sadly that neither happened. Instead Rusty became a returning character. Rusty returned to Springfield for various family gatherings over the years and whenever Josh and Reva found Marah and Shayne inconvenient for their latest drama or sometimes just when they thought it would be nice for them, they sent the kids to stay with Rusty “on his ranch outside of Tulsa” (whether we actually saw him on screen or not). Sadly Rusty never re-married and we don’t know what his romantic life was like in Oklahoma, but I’m sure he never met anyone as perfect for him as Mindy. They shared a connected past (see them reminiscing at the Jeva Cross Creek wedding), they were hot together, they saw each other as partners and equals, and they challenged each other to be better people. The only ways Rusty and Mindy fell short as a couple were his inexplicable obsession with Rose and the fact both times they were together they only were allowed a couple of months before it was torn apart. Rusty and Mindy are my couple example of the great one who got away.

I don’t have any right now about the original Mindy-Rusty duo, but enjoy the reconstructed duo at the Jeva Cross Creek Wedding:

Jeva Wedding Number 1 Cross Creek

July 21, 2014

Jeva WeddingI have to say to begin with I’m not a Jeva fan, but even so, I still consider Josh Lewis and Reva Shayne marrying for the first time at Cross Creek (aka Jeva Wedding Number 1) as the greatest soap wedding ever. It had everything a soap wedding should: ties to the community, beautiful location shots, beautiful clothes (that dress, that hat, Josh’s white suit), lots of family members, family traditions (which were carried on at future Lewis family weddings, not made up for this one and then forgotten), drama simmering beneath the scenes (will Rusty be able to get Will Jefferies, will Mindy and Rusty FINALLY get together, will Jeva find the perfect place for their wedding, will Reva make it to the wedding even after she was left behind, what is Reva’s big secret she hasn’t told Josh yet and what does that have to do with yon handsome stranger Dylan). In addition it just has normal wedding stuff all too often missing from soap weddings, Billy getting people to tape a videotape a wedding message to Josh and Reva, odd people dancing together, Marah running around giggling and dancing. It’s just the perfect soap wedding and makes you feel wonderful. (Except what is the deal with that strange looking guy being the minister?) I’m sure you’ll enjoy this, so welcome to Cross Creek and the biggest blowout it’s ever seen, the Jeva wedding, July 14-18, 1989. See summaries of other storylines below the clip links.

You may want to watch Bauer BBQ 1989 to help catch you up on the various supporting storylines.

P.S. If you want to know, weddings 2 and 3 on my all time best wedding list are Quola, also on Guiding Light, and Niktor number 1 on The Young and the Restless.

In addition to the footage of the wedding itself I’ve included links to some other materials (promo, restored clips, etc.) and linked to all the footage on the clip channel I got this from so it actually starts a few days before the wedding with prep. The entire first lead up to the wedding episode is available as part of the Bauer BBQ 1989 which was right before the wedding.

Part 20 (Wedding Night)

Other storylines in the full episodes:

Roger revealed himself at Blake and Phillip’s wedding, saving Blake’s life. Since he was alive, he had to face all the legal charges that he was facing when he fell off the clip. Ross had been Roger’s lawyer when he first came to town and is defending him alive now. Roger was working as a CIA operative during the years everyone thought he was dead and that gets him off now. Since some of those charges involved kidnapping Holly she isn’t pleased to see him go free. Holly is wrong about Roger not trying right here though, he honestly is trying to make up for past wrongs. However, she’s right to some extent that Roger hasn’t changed. Roger spent his life being torn between wanting Spaulding Enterprises, money and power or Holly and relationship happiness. He really could never have both or decide which he wanted which led his actions to veer greatly between them and created lots of chaos in his wake. Phillip is very supportive of Roger right now because Roger saved Blake’s life and Phillip loves Blake. Alan is actually telling the truth (he’d faked proof of Beth’s death to help Phillip move on believing Beth was really dead), but he’s only telling it now as a last ditch effort to keep Phillip and Blake apart. Beth will soon be back, but only after they swap out Blakes.

In a storyline no one I’ve found liked, Rusty inexplicably dumped Mindy who was his soulmate for a mealy mouth, annoying, ex-prostitute named Rose. Rusty married Rose and she was recently murdered. Rusty suspects it was done by Will Jefferies who was then married to Mindy and he was right.

I don’t know who this Dana is and the couple who apparently want her to lose the child. Rick is especially vulnerable and protective of pregnant women right now because he’s just suffered through his first miscarriage with Meredith.

Johnny Bauer and Chelsea Reardon are currently a couple and working together on their new talk show One on One at WSPR. The people they are talking about using is the poor family they found in the 4th of July episode linked to above. Chelsea has an issue with Holly both professionally and because Holly is having an affair with Ed while Ed is married to Chelsea’s sister Maureen.

Bauer BBQ 1989

July 1, 2014
Ed Michelle Rick Maureen Fletcher 1989

Ed Michelle Rick Maureen Fletcher 1989

The BlueRose channel recordings are full episodes, but they do have commercials. They are from the original 1980s airings. Also, look for great really little girl Michelle bits in the July 4th and 5th episodes with close ups and an actual lines, etc. I’m including the episodes from July 3rd, 4th, and 5th. The channel continues with the episodes and you find them there.

Among the biggest stories are Dylan returning to town causing problems for a otherwise happily married Alan-Michael Spaulding and Harley Cooper, Maureen and Ed Bauer being separated with part of the problem being caused by Holly on his side and Fletcher on hers, Alan is about to go prison for accidentally shooting Phillip at his wedding, etc. bringing to an end the first awful Alan recast, Roger has been revealed and he has gotten a literal get out of free card courtesy of the CIA, “Sonni” has been partially exposed and Josh is divorcing her having already reconciled with Reva, Rusty is still obsessed with getting Will who is currently married to Mindy although they are divorcing, Billy and Vanessa are estranged, Johnny and Chelsea are about to start his TV show, Frank is looking out for Sam as a favor to Ross, and Rick and Meredith have just separated.

July 3, 1989

Sam Marler is working at the Wheels and Meals Diner where she talks to Frank who claims her as kin because they are brother and sister in law once removed because her biological brother Phillip’s adopted brother Alan-Michael was currently married to Frank’s sister Harley. Sam is still being a romantic. Frank hasn’t yet fallen in love.  This episode is a great episode showing the original Wheels and Meals Diner set. Sam is the child that Justin and Jackie Marler had when they reunited for the last time. Jackie died in a plane crash when Sam was still a baby. Justin took her out of the country to be raised.

Ed claims that the Bauer BBQ has been going on every July 4th since he was a little kid and questions having it this year, but comes around. Ed and Maureen were separated at the time and Ed had moved Holly into the house. I really liked Holly’s hair in this. Ed hadn’t yet had an affair with Lillian so she really isn’t a hot button at this point. Rick announces Meredith Reade (Rick’s wife) has left him. Meredith found out that she wasn’t able to have kids and already having felt self-conscious about the fact she was older than Rick, she left feeling that she’d only trap him by staying. Rick didn’t want her to go, but even in her sacrifice Meredith showed how selfish she always was. When Meredith and Rick thought they’d broke up forever, Meredith had a one night stand with Phillip and she got pregnant. Rick didn’t find out until after Rick was given the choice to save either save Meredith’s life or her baby’s. Phillip still advised Rick to save Meredith. Nice shout out that Rick used to be called Freddie and a nice speech by Rick with both his trademark humor and an insightful analysis of his own character.

At this point Alan-Michael and Harley are happily married, but Dylan is intent on wining back his old flame and she cooperates enough that she pushes Alan-Michael into a panic that ultimately causes them to divorce. Dylan has brought something by to give to Harley and A-M doesn’t give him a very warm welcome. Actually A-M and Harley originally moved back to 5th Street because A-M didn’t get his trustfund, but they slowly came to love each other and buckled down and made things work and eventually A-M got his money back. Dylan hadn’t written because he was illiterate.

Meanwhile Sonni and Josh are getting a divorce. He’d married Sonni when he went down to Venezuela and thought she died there. She returned from the dead just about the time he and Reva were getting back together in Springfield and although Josh messed with Sonni by trying to save their marriage, ultimately Jeva reunited and Sonni was left even more of a mental wreck than before. Sonni runs into Roger Thorpe and they have a great conversation. (8:39 is a commercial on The Young and the Restless showing the guy who DID rape Cricket, Michael only intended too)

July 4, 1989

We find the last touches being put out for the Bauer BBQ. A shout out to one of Bert’s recipe. Michelle comes in with Maureen and Fletcher. Maureen was pretty classy in introducing Michelle to Holly. Roger had gotten a pardon for all charges pending when he “died” in return for acting as an agent for the CIA. Meredith is Flether’s sister. Alan-Michael’s mother Hope was Rick’s first cousin. Frank still believes Nadine’s cover story that Buzz was dead. Johnny Bauer is descended from Papa Bauer’s brother Otto and his wife Myra Bauer and apparently they live in Brice Lake, Wisconsin. Johnny is Ed’s third cousin. I don’t really remember his parents whose names are Jack and Lanie Bauer. Johnny, having recovered from the “terminal” cancer that he faith healed himself from and that robbed Roxie of her sanity without a glance backward, Johnny has moved on to Chelsea and they will both star on his new television show, “One on One” at WSPR-TV . That’s a pretty horrible fight in Ed’s flashback. Maureen’s friendship with Roger really was an important drama point in the series. Hating Roger did rule Ed’s life for awhile. Maureen is right, Ed looks much better when he’s happy.

Will Jefferies came in as Josh’s good friend, but he eventually recovered his memory and his evilness came out especially wanting to get Josh. It was his fault that Reva and Josh broke up because he faked Marah’s paternity test to make it seem like she was Kyle Sampson’s child, which really wasn’t true. By the time Will married Mindy his evilness was out to himself, but he was still doing his best to hide it and truly thought he could be saved through Mindy’s love. It didn’t work out. Rusty resigned over this Will Jefferies mess. Honestly I don’t know why Rusty is so upset, even though Will did kill his wife Rose aka Rosie, I don’t think it was any loss and Rusty belonged with Mindy. I just don’t understand the fuss over Rose, she was SO annoying. Fletcher had married Maeve Stoddard a year ago at the Bauer BBQ and she died in an helicopter crash soon after.

I’m glad Wanda, the Lewis secretary was there, I love her, I don’t know why she’s with someone other than her husband Lowell. Wanda brought Three Bean Salad made with 5 beans, Green, Wax, Pinto, Kidney, and Lima, she also used Tabasco sauce and hot peppers.

A flashback from the day before at the end of an episode? (Just after 23:00 is a commercial for Paradise aka Guns of Paradise which was a terrific western that sadly didn’t do very well in the ratings, check it out if you ever get a chance, my favorite toast comes from it.)

July 5, 1989

We start watching the fireworks at the Bauer BBQ and Michelle not liking Ed ignoring Maureen for Holly. The sparkler going out does sound like omen. More flashbacks from the last couple of days. Holly decides to move out and tells Ed.

Sonni and Roger are on a date. Nothing good can come of this, although I love her outfit. I also really love the decor here, I wonder if it’s the Springfield Inn? (I found another clip from later that month, it is definitely the Springfield Inn) Sonni gives a summary of her current backstory around the 30 minute mark. Roger really either needs a tie or to unbutton his top button. He’s looking too Adrian Monk like here.

Frank Cooper continues to look out for Sam Marler at Uncle Ross’ request.

The Spaulding Mansion is next door, so it makes sense if Dylan was mowing there, he’d hear the BBQ. Henry visits Phillip and talks about how Alan has confessed to everything and is prepared to take his punishment. Blake is gone because they are switching Blakes. It had still been the first blonde “Blake” up to this point, but it will be Sherry Stringfield when she returns.

Nice Billip tribute from Lillian and Phillip (13:00)

Johnny and Chelsea stumble on the homeless family that Frank fed for free earlier.  They are living in a tarp down by the river. They for seem reason just answer all of Johnny and Chelsea’s rude questions. Johnny intends to put them on his new show, while there are several people Johnny knows who could offer the guy a job or a place to stay he decides to just put him on his new TV show.

Guiding Light Cast Round Up 54

February 7, 2013

This is the fifty-fourth in an irregular feature where we will report updates on what cast members of Guiding Light are doing now. I’m playing catch up on some soap magazine news. So as a reminder you can buy back issues:

John Wesley Shipp (Kelly Nelson part of my beloved Kelly and Morgan) did a three episode stint during season 2 of the MTV series Teen Wolf. He played Mr. Lahey. There is a full description of the character in the Q and A in the October 29, 2012 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Tina Sloan (Lillian Raines) has shared on Twitter a few classic Guiding Light cast photos again.

Judi Evans (Beth Raines Spaulding #1) was in the mockumentary Ron and Laura Take Back America (2012). This is the trailer, spot Evans at about 1:35 into the trailer.
Evans also has an upcoming appearance on The Mentalist. Some Like It Blonde@TheTeamJudi tweeted the airdate “Feb. 17th. The Episode is “Red in Tooth and Claw.” Read the press release here:”

Jerry verDorn (Ross Marler) is interviewed in the Oct. 29, 2012 issue of Soap Opera Digest. Among other things verDorn points out that his son Jake was recently married at the same Lake Mohawk Club that was the scene of the Vanilly-Lillibuzz wedding in the lead up to the finale (verDorn had said in a previous interview that he has a home on the lake). verDorn: “…we have some tacos and margaritas once every three months: me, Michael O’Leary (Rick Bauer #5), Grant Aleksander (Phillip Spaulding #2), Justin Deas (Buzz Cooper) and one of our directors [not specified]….”

Jane Elliot (Carrie Marler) was featured in a soaps most beautiful women interview round up in the October 29, 2012 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Harley Jane Kozak (Annabelle Simms Reardon, part of my beloved Tony and Annabelle) celebrated her birthday January 28th. Her last film credit on IMDB is the short Vipers in the Grass from 2010.

@SethroOnTheTV found this nice short interview with Karla Mosley (Christina Boudreau, part of one of the last really great new couples with Remy) and her real life fiance.

Ricky Paull Goldin (Gus Aitoro) put on a Hurricane Sandy Fundraiser with All My Children co-star Alicia Minshew. See a photo in the Jan. 28, 2013 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth. Goldin is also featured in a Q &A in the same issue (complete with photo) when it talks about his role on The Young and the Restless from 1999-2000 where he played businessman cum stalker/kidnapper obsessed with Victoria Newman until his character, Gary Dawson, was hauled off the mental hospital.
Guiding Light@Guiding_Light tweeted “HEY EVERYONE!!! Let’s CHAT with @rickygoldin on TWITTER on Feb 13 at 9 PM est! Let’s blow this thing UP!!! :D”
Goldin himself tweeted: “Want to find out what I’m up to?? Tune in to Spontaneous Construction #SpoCo starting 8 PM February 15 on @HGTV” He included a photo:
Goldin posted a video preview to Spontaneous Construction:

Hayden Panettiere (Lizzie Spaulding #2, the little girl who returned from Arizona, killed Carl Stevens, and fought cancer) was featured in a how to do her Emmy hairstyle updo in the Oct. 29, 2012 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Lawrence Saint-Victor (Remy Boudreau one of the last really good couples in the final years of Guiding Light) was interviewed on his soap past and his new The Bold and the Beautiful role in the Jan. 14, 2013 issue of Soap Opera Digest. Within the interview Saint-Victor also mentioned Renee Brunson who had been in the Guiding Light wardrobe department was now in wardrobe on The Bold and the Beautiful.

Susan Douglas Rubes (Katherine Roberts Lang Grant Holden, Meta Bauer’s step-daughter through reporter Joe Roberts, her dead by car crash caused an uproar among fans) was the only actress to play Kathy Roberts, according to Soap Central from radio only, December 27, 1950 to June 27, 1952; radio & television, June 30, 1952 to June 29, 1956; television only, July 2, 1956 to March 31, 1958. She went on to a long career across many mediums, and passed away Jan. 23, 2013 in Toronto, Canada. Thanks to itsonlythesoaps@itsonlythesoaps for the heads up.

Photos from the 9th Annual Daytime Stars and Strikes (formerly the Bloss Bowling event) featuring many Guiding Light cast members are featured in the Oct. 29, 2012 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Cassie Layne Winslow and her son Will are featured in the 5 year flashback (complete with story summary and photo) in the Jan. 28, 2013 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

Andrea Evans (Patty Williams on The Young and the Restless) reflects on her relationship with recently passed former Guiding Light Executive Producer Paul Rauch for four pages in the Jan. 14, 2013 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Victor Miller, who wrote many of the Friday the 13th series of horror movie scripts, also is credited as writing for Guiding Light during 1995-1996 and also has writing credits for One Life to Live, Another World, General Hospital, and All My Children.

Kassie DePaiva (Chelsea Reardon, Nola and Maureen’s little sister) is heading up the all soap star line up of the web series Tainted Dreams. See reports on the full line up in the Jan. 14, 2013 issue of Soap Opera Digest.

Tom Pelphrey (Jonathan Randall, Reva’s last sudden son) and Ron Raines (Alan Spaulding #3) attended Chaplin: The Musical together on Broadway. See a photo and more details in the November 5, 2012 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth.

The November 5, 2012 issue of CBS Soaps in Depth counted down the scariest CBS stories ever (complete with photos). Guiding Light captured spots 6 and 4 with the Marian (psycho Brent Lawrence dressed as a woman to continue his reign of terror) and Reva versus Reva (when Dolly the clone aka Cleva held Reva hostage).

Christmas 1989

December 19, 2012

1989 was another very busy Christmas season in Springfield. I have four entire episodes, although two of them were shortening by a CBS News Special Report (which is edited out except the final announcement).

Jeva is together and Reva is pretty darn pregnant with Shayne, but as usual she’s keeping secrets. This time it’s about Dylan. They’ve already weathered the Dylan existed and she gave him up for adoption secret and the Reva saying she kept it secret because she was raped (complete with Billy and Josh going down to Tulsa to try and find out who did it), but now the fact that she wasn’t really raped after all and that Billy was the father is coming out. (Really Reva, you didn’t tell Billy even when you were married to him?) This truly is Josh’s shining moment because while he starts by stalking out as usual, even being too upset to say anything to Marah when he walks past her, thanks to Nick getting H.B. to the right place at the right time (the bridge) Josh acts the most grown up that I ever remember seeing him and truly gets some understanding of Reva, Billy, and himself. And speaking of Marah, this is basically a star turn for her. She’s as darling as anything and gets a star’s share of the limelight (while Michelle is stuck with no lines holding a baby doll playing Mary). I think Michelle is recast to catch up with Little Billy too. (Loved this Little Billy he looked so scarily like he could have been Billy and Vanessa’s son, especially Billy’s.)

We’re just at the end of the whole Dylan-Harley-Alan-Michael/Daisy/Susan debacle which ended with Harley and Alan-Michael split up and the LeMays heading out of town to keep their adopted daughter away from the craziness. While Dylan and Harley weren’t a great match, they did have some chemistry which they lied to Alan-Michael about and they’d actually slept together ending her marriage to Alan-Michael. However, once they were free to date, Dylan has taken up with Phillip’s biological full sister, Samantha Marler instead.

When Beth disappeared (as Tina Sloan likes to point out leaving one red shoe behind) she was presumed dead on the strength of evidence fabricated by Alan. (This was actually not a cruel move on his part, he truly believed Beth had to be dead – which was the  considered opinion of the rescue authorities – and Alan knew Phillip wouldn’t move on with his life until he had definite proof Beth was dead, so when he couldn’t find any Alan constructed it.) Turns out she had been attacked and it flashed her back to Bradley attacking her which triggered a psychotic episode rendering Beth amnesiac and mute.  She was found by architect Neil Everest (who was pretty round the bend himself) and instead of reporting that he found her to any authority nursed her back to health, keeping her completely dependent on him. Neil had been hired to build Blakewood Towers (which Roger named after Blake, but the Blakewood was dropped almost immediately after completion for complicated reasons I won’t go into here, but you know it as Towers restaurant and hotel which was there until the final episodes of the series). Neil brought along his mute girlfriend. Blake spotted her and found out who she was almost as soon as she returned to town and totally freaked knowing that while Phillip loved Blake it didn’t hold a candle to how he felt about Beth and even though Phillip saw her, Blake convinced him he was hallucinating and threw him into a mental hospital for the first time. Where this picks up both Rick and Phillip now know they’ve found the real Beth alive, but once Neil feels her slipping out of his control he will do anything and I do mean ANYTHING to stop that from happening. That’s what the wedding is about. Blake is just starting a connection with her next obsession, I mean romance, Alan-Michael which in many ways is as twisted as Roger and Holly’s.

Johnny was faith healed of his cancer, but at the cost of Roxie’s sanity and apparently the faith healing didn’t work for that. Johnny then repaid all the time Roxie spent tending to his every need, but letting her be locked up in a mental hospital, never going to see her, and getting into romance/singing duo with Chelsea Reardon who, wisely it turned out, didn’t believe Phillip’s profession that he loved her more than Beth’s memory. They are now both working at WSPR.

Gilly and Hamp are still early on in their story although they’ve made it to the hot kisses stage. I always liked them. I especially always liked Hamp. I still miss him and his sax.

Neil has apparently moved into Reva Bend. Reva Bend, a play on River Bend, is a pretty house that Reva originally moved into. She’s living in a bigger house with Josh now. Later Holly will move into Reva Bend. I always had a special feeling for it, partially because it was always such a pretty space, and partially because it’s name is a pun and I’m a sucker for a pun.

Mindy and Rusty were one of my all time favorite couples, but sadly they never really got a chance at a real full blown romance. When they should have moved forward with it, Rusty got caught up in that whole Rose-drug mess, and who would rather see that than the sparks that fly when a Lewis and a Shayne really get together? Now the actor is leaving the show, so Rusty is moving down to Tulsa. Mindy doesn’t ever follow him there, although I think she should have. On the plus side probably more than any other character who “left town” Rusty comes back on a regular basis and is mentioned even more than that really creating the feeling that he really did just move out of town, not fall of f the face of the earth like so many others did.

Alex had grown close to both Fletcher and “Adam” after she plane crashed on his island. Turns out he always wore a mask so no one would realize he was actually Roger Thorpe. Alex was torn between her loyalties and attractions to both men, but this includes a serious play by Roger to become the only man in her life. I really liked this fairly adult triangle because I bought Alex’s interactions with both men, although I could have told her from the get go that both of them would end up breaking her heart and of course they do.

Harley voices her concerns which is reference in the full episode, the footage in the highlight after that is included in the full episodes.

December 19,1989

Josh tells Reva about Harley’s suspicions. Reva is pregnant with Shayne.

Beth is back from the dead, but Neil Everest has her.

Blake is with Alan-Michael.

Johnny and Chelsea.

Gilly and Hamp

My Comments:

I like Reva’s pregnancy clothes. That’s a really great example of presents all wrapped soap opera style. Lillian is very happy that Beth has come back from the dead. Neil is awful. He cared more about his happiness than Beth’s. I liked Beth Chamberlain’s hair better this length. I wonder if she watched Judi Evans tapes. She does move her head like she did. Maybe if Neil got a haircut he wouldn’t have to trap a bride. Blake had discovered Beth was a live and even had Phillip committed to keep him from finding Beth. A-M and Blake had a relationship that was part emotion and part manipulation. Blake’s robe is pretty. Really considering Blake had Phillip committed, maybe Phillip deserved a break about Ross. I hated that Johnny moved on after Roxie gave her life for him. Oh, we must have been Hoss. I didn’t like Ross & Nadine. They didn’t last long. I think Dinah is a freaky stalker, but I don’t quite remember. Kids plural? I only remember Kat. I wouldn’t want to meet Gilly’s folks either Hamp, especially her mother. This must have been hard as an actress who hasn’t lost her speech, not to break out and say something. Sadly Neil doesn’t mean that “I just want you to be happy. Maybe when you were married to Billy Reva you should have told him this. Frank always had rotten luck in women other than Eleni. Ed should at least want to hear Blake’s side, he helped raise her. Marah is SO cute.Where’s Michelle?

December 20, 1989

Blake arrives at Neil-Beth wedding

Reva Bend

Santa Nick gets H.B. to Josh on the bridge

Sam and Dylan

Vanessa walks in with Little Billy and overhears Billy-Reva and misunderstands

Dylan runs his presents past Sam.

Phillip throws Beth over his shoulder and runs off again, like he did at the start of Four Musketeers Christmas in New York.

My Comments:

Reva honey I think you did a lot worse to Billy & Dylan than Josh. Love H.B.’s hat. Nope Josh I was in Reva’s head when she jumped, but she didn’t think of Dylan once. Neil did have good taste in dresses, Beth’s is very pretty. Santa Nick again. So glad to see him. I love Alex’s outfit. I knew H.B. meant Billy, but Josh is right H.B. is right up there. (No H.B.but Josh did worse to Morgan, that’s where his bad karma comes from.) Vanilly belong together. The ad for Paradise was an attempt at Westerns when there wasn’t one. I really liked it and I still use Ethan’s toast “Confusion to our enemies.” Billy makes a cute older cousin to Marah, they should have played that up more. Billy: “I did leave on account of Reva, but I came back on account of you.”  Nice edit job showing 4 Musketeers in NYC without ever showing Beth didn’t look the same. Josh: “Why do they all treat me like they are so fragile? I’m not the one who jumps off bridges.” Dylan should have known not to tell Sam that. That really was great and a great reference back to the Four Musketeers in NYC Christmas. Phillip: “Here we go again.” Great Josh accepting Reva for who she is speech. Wish he was like that the other 99% of the time.

December 21, 1989

Episode picks up after first half was cut off by a special news report.

Marah and Little Billy are missing and everyone looks for them. Dylan finds them.

Rusty decides that he needs to move to Tulsa, Mindy decides they aren’t ready to marry, but they don’t break up.

Neil and Phillip fight on the bridge, which eventually drags a mute Beth to scream.

My Comments:

That was a nice Dylan big brother moment to Marah. Was Vanessa protecting Reva because of the pregnancy? Otherwise Vanessa would have been furious if Reva pulled that with her. Oh, if only Rusty-Mindy had meant that. 😦 Mindy: “Russell Shayne, your taste is all in your mouth.”

December 22, 1989

Episode cut 10 minutes by a news report, starts afterward.

Everyone finds out Little Billy and Marah are safe. This is great Marah stuff.

Phillip confronts Blake.

Miss Sarah-Reva scene

Santa Nick goes on TV

Rusty got to read Night Before Christmas

Vanessa-Reva confrontation

My Comments:

I liked the Fletcher-Alex-Roger triangle. They were both reasonable character base relationships, but I didn’t think Alex belonged in either one. That really is a great Josh speech. Josh: “Good or bad that’s your family in there and they are waiting for you if you want them.” Nice Miss Sarah-Reva scene too. Blake it’s Phillip’s family company what did you think? So Nick worked magic for Gilly and Hamp. They deserved it. Don’t waste your wished on Fletcher Maureen, he doesn’t deserve it. Great Vanessa-Reva confrontation. 31:30 Ed reads the Christmas Story I think that’s Michelle as Mary.

Christmas 1987

December 17, 2012

1987 has a lot going on.

Reva and Vanessa are arch rivals because she came to town to split Vanessa and Billy up. Also, Vanessa was all rich blue blood and Reva was all brassy upstart so they naturally clashed and since they were both strong women, they clashed big.

Meredith Reade was Fletcher’s sister and while she was soon forgotten she did cut a swath through Springfield while she was here. As a teenager, Meredith committed euthanasia on her mother and it has colored her relationships with patients and the younger doctor Rick Bauer and led her to bring charges against Rick when he was trying to help Johnny  fight cancer with less conventional treatments. That’s what the hearing in the board room is about. The head butting started to create sparks and this is just the beginning of Rick and Meredith as a complicated couple.

This was during the ill conceived if well intentioned period when they were trying to bring  back some of the original ideas behind the series (religion, a friendship lamp in the window) by attempting to make this more distantly related Bauer the Guiding Light of the show as he is currently in the process of faith healing himself of cancer. I wonder if he’d have still done it if he’d realized it would cost Roxie her mind, I think he would have, he always was a selfish sort.

While Josh was out of town (read actor Robert Newman left the show for a time), he went to Venezuela and married a raven haired psychiatrist named Sonni. To be fair this one was already crazy before she met Josh. Turns out Sonni was a twin and her sister was Solita. Sonni had been declared dead, but just as Reva and Josh were reuniting she showed up alive and with partial amnesia and a new clingy attitude. Jeva decided that Sonni needed Josh and he reunited with her instead. It eventually came out that Solita was evil (as in super manipulative and tried to kill people evil) and that Solita’s death had caused a DID division with Sonni having the personalities of both twins.

I really loved Rusty and Mindy together and will always think they were an end game worthy couple, but sadly just when they were starting to get a real shot at true coupledom instead of just dancing around the idea, up reared the ugly head of junkie Rose that for some utterly accountable reason Rusty throws away his life for, marries her (bleech), and then after she is killed (happy thought) Rusty goes on a revenge kick and then leaves the show there after to only return briefly over the years and to never reconnect with the great couple that was coming. At this point Rusty and Mindy were dating and Rose had only started to capture Rusty’s attention, he really was mostly just professionally interested at this point, but that changes fast.

The first of many attempts over the years to catch lightning in a bottle again with a new version of Four Musketeers was the quad A-M-Dinah-Cameron-Harley. While three of the characters caught fire and would stay around (“Cameron” would leave for a role on 90210 and frankly don’t think he was missed much), the quad really didn’t hold up and was eventually abandoned. This early version of Dinah (2 actresses played her) was sweet and really didn’t show much of the street smarts that let her survive being raised in a traveling carnival. They played her naive and A-M was genuinely interested in her, but they soon meet Harley after one of A-M’s college pranks blows up in his face and that’s where the true magic lies.

Amanda and Ross were hot and heavy back in the day. That’s part of the reason Ross still lives in the Carriage House (it used to be a real Carriage House on the grounds of the Wexler estate that Amanda’s adoptive mother owned). This is just a brief re-kindling, but kind of shows why Amanda was so confident she could get Ross back the next time she came back to town.

Vanessa and Alan had, according to retcon, knew each other all their lives since her father Henry worked for his father Brandon while they were building up the company. As a result Alan always considered Vanessa a strong woman worthy of his respect, but he always saw their marriage as more merger than romance. This is the second time Alan and Vanessa were involved, but it’s very business like because they’ve both lost the love of their life and want stable and reliable and businesslike, but I think they both want more, hence Alan’s continued association with Reva.

Meanwhile Alex, who has made a certain amount of peace with Alan since they both came back to town, still thinks he needs protected from himself and as usual she has a scheme. She was dating H.B. at this time, but I don’t really think Alan needed to have bothered with the pre-nup they weren’t THAT serious. I don’t think the idea to combine Lewis and Spaulding would really be that even or that good, although they are right Josh never could take Alan in business.

After Maeve’s disastrous marriage to Kyle Sampson and its ugly (on her part) aftermath, Maeve took up with Fletcher who worked for her on the Springfield Journal. While personally I didn’t care for Maeve for a variety of personal reasons, but honestly she was a great professional business woman, except for the getting involved with an employee thing. She never did like Meredith though and Fletcher is not the man to pin hopes of stability to.

However, one of the main reasons I like this episode is that Santa Nick is in it. When Beth and Phillip were on the run in New York City they ran into a sidewalk Santa that was strongly hinted to be the real thing. In the years after that Nick would show up in Springfield or to Springfielders and give good advice or help them make a connection between people who needed it. He was always a little bit magical showing up at the most unexpected times and places and always knew not just what people thought was going on, but what was REALLY going on. I used to run in from the bus yelling, is Nick back yet?

December 21, 1987 Episode

My Comments:

That was just Reva kismet. It’s funny that Vanessa ended up friends with Reva, most of her life her attitude was more like this. 20:00 Maeve explains Meredith’s secret with her mother. Meredith did hate herself. It’s part of why I didn’t like her with Rick, he deserved better. Nice little example of Phillip & Reva being buds. What a nicely cut suit on Phillip. OK, I’ll give Chelsea credit for that. I find all these Mr. Clean commercials hilarious since he later appears on the show. 43:00 Dick Saxton the star reporter of the Springfield Mirror. I like Ed owning up to his mistakes he doesn’t normally do that.

December 22, 1987 Episode

My Comments:

So what happened to Miss Martha’s nativity scene in later years? Rusty was the victim of a conspiracy. 5:00 Love Phillip playing with his future son-in-law. I hope someone took a photo they can pull out to give to Bizzie for Xmas. I really think the sibling rivalry was more on A-M’s part than Phillip’s. Chelsea was right Phillip never got over Beth. 36:00 a great A-M & Alan photo. Why would Amanda have talked to Hope? Actually I love Dinah’s white sweater. 51:00 Mindy’s dog. Love the way Henry whispers “Love Child.” 53:00 All of Alan’s then KNOWN children together. Really like Alex’s hair and suit too. Nice Rex is really Gina and Danny’s father stuff in ad for Y&R.

Johnny Bauer – Cancer, Roxie, Guiding Light

Rusty, Rose, Mindy

Amanda -Ross

H.B. – Alex

Merger Spaulding and Lewis

My Comments:

1:00 Commercials end, Great Bauer family Christmas. Love happy Maureen & Ed. Glad Rick wants nothing to do with Johnny. I hated him. Glad A-M is back. One of the many times A-M and Phillip were at odds. Chelsea looks horrible. Looks like the Lewis family is having a great year too. Oh good Johnny is having trouble, did I mention I never liked him at all. Looks like 1987 wasn’t a good fashion year for Reva either. Alright that’s a good line. “You Shayne women take my breath away.”  It’s always a better time when Rusty was there. He was my favorite Shayne by far. Sonni another one of Josh’s wives before he drove her crazy. I hated when Will Jefferies was with Mindy. I think the Lewis Oil-Spaulidng Enterprises merger was a terrible idea. I didn’t really care for A-M-Dinah as a couple, but this Dinah was OK. That Henry filler line “I remember your grandmother wearing it.” Nice detail. This Amanda was always smart once she grew up, took her long enough. Dinah and Vanessa are both beautiful. Oh look at Little Billy toddling along. Isn’t he cute. I actually liked Lillian and Hawk. Baby Marah is pretty cute too. Reva’s awful fashion crime doesn’t extend to her pants. They are good. Papa Bauer reference! Now Bert. ♥ 34:00 Bauer family scene including Guiding Light explanation. Alan wasn’t around when Amanda was growing up either. If I ran a soap every faked photo like that would be offered to fans. Never liked Alan-Vanessa. Truly hated Rose.

December 23, 1987 Episode

December 24, 1987 Episode

Meredith and Fletcher and Rick

Fletcher and Maeve

Santa Nick

15:00 Johnny gives Michelle a baby pillow Bert made for Michelle. 16:00 Alan is taken with baby Marah.Alan gave Marah a college trustfund. What I truly remember out of all of this is the Beth-Phillip scenes when he leaves the last scrap of flowers from prom when his and India’s house burned. 32:00 Phillip talking to Beth’s grave. 42:00 Nick makes a visit. Only bad advice I ever remember Nick giving, he should have tried “Beth is alive.”

Dec. 28, 1987 Episode (Part 1) (Part 2)

I hated Rose breaking up Mindy and Rusty before they really had a chance. I always thought they belonged together. Mindy loves a good scheme. (Part 3) (Part 4) (Part 5)

I love Phillip searching for a way to heal Johnny. Normally I think Johnny being forgotten is a good thing, but it would have been nice for Phillip to reflect back on this when facing his own terminal prognosis, to at least asked Rick for a Johnny update. (Part 6)

Rusty should have stuck closer to Roxie. This was when she was about to fall apart. My fav part of Roxie was her dimples. She had great dimples. 1 photo Maeve said she was going to take LOTS of photos. Maeve actually gets a 2nd chance with Fletcher. If she had lived, he’d have walked out on her eventually just like everyone else. (Part 7)

Guiding Light Cast Round Up 45

March 11, 2012

This is the forty-fifth in an irregular feature where we will report updates on what cast members of Guiding Light are doing now. I’m playing catch up on some soap magazine news. So as a reminder you can buy back issues:

An 75th Anniversary Guiding Light timeline, including last cast photo and featuring Manny first wedding as only one of four listed was in the Jan. 31, 2012 issue Soap Opera Digest. “Light Bright” Soap Opera Digest 31 January 2012. pp. 66-69 It also includes a collection of Guiding Light weddings pp. 76-77.

@Guiding_Light: recently tweeted “Soap Classics confirmed told @Mark_Lopa that a #GL Christmas set will be released in September or October!”

@SoapOpera451 recently blogged about her role in putting together a tribute to the 30th anniversary of Daytime Emmys best actor and actress winners. Enjoy the many Guiding Light and her sister soaps stars in the clip.

Mary Stuart (Meta  Bauer #5, who returned in the late 1990s & was involved with many stories, including Manny, on the canvas at that time) was already a soap legend from her role on Search for Tomorrow and played Meta until she died. Her last appearance coming close to her actual death. We Love Soaps shared this classic article from 1962.

Tammy Blanchard (Drew Jacobs, Michelle’s best friend during early Manny storyline) will appear on TV in several different shows this March.

John Wesley Shipp (my beloved Kelly Nelson) is doing personal appearances this weekend (March 10-11, 2012) in Metropolis, IL. (Dang if I’d realized that a little sooner I could have gone!)

A speech by Claire Labine (Guiding Light head writer) is summarized.

Several former Springfielders showed up at the Indie Soap Awards. See their photos at the link below:

Liz Keifer (Blake Thorpe Marler #5)  and Jerry verDorn (Ross Marler) were pictured in the Jan. 28, 1997 issue of Soap Opera Digest. verDorn shared “At our wedding (Ed. note – the first Bloss wedding), Liz was very sick. I spent the day bringing her water and food and making sure she took her aspirin.” p. 28

Ashley Peldon (Marah Lewis #2) was interviewed by Soaps451 in 2009.

Joe Lando (Macualley West – who did a summer storyline involving Mindy on his summer hiatus from Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman)has been added to the series The Secret Circle.

Kassie DePaiva (Chelsea Reardon) and Roger Howarth (who played Jory Andros on GL in 1992) have brought their One Life to Live roles to General Hospital. Howarth (who played Jory Andros on GL in 1992, nope still haven’t figured out who he was, but just glad I can include him in the update) is now on contract with General Hospital. He’ll be back “by May sweeps.”

Hayden Panettiere (Lizzie Spaulding #2, the little girl who came back from Arizona and had cancer) has been cast in the primetime pilot, Nashville.

Terrell Anthony‘s (Reva and Roxie’s brother, Rusty Shayne) last credit is “Uncle John” in Mandie and the Cherokee Treasure in 2010 via @Guiding_Light.

Laura Bell Bundy (Marah Lewis #5) just released a new single. Here’s “That’s What Angels Do” Sneak Peek.

will host a party leading up to the Country Music Awards.

Lauren C. Mayhew (Marah Lewis #4 – in her most memorable storyline she partnered with Brittany Snow‘s Susan as they tried to rescue the rest of the kids from Holly, Sound of Music style) recently tweeted “SKULL rock! Hiking with my buddy David! We r inside the skull! #Palisades”!/LCMayhew/status/173489672016769025/photo/1
She also sent some photos of her at a pool party.!/LCMayhew/status/176481380367220736/photo/1!/LCMayhew/status/176471161671135232/photo/1

Arthur Peterson (who played Rev Ruthledge for 10 years) was part of the 1987 50th Anniversary of Guiding Light, was a guest at the Lincoln Center black tie gala and watched episode 10, 201 be filmed according to The New York Times.

Brian Gaskill (Dylan Lewis #2 – the painful recast to try to fit a name actor from another soap into the cast) has released a spoken word album of poetry.

Kim Zimmer (Reva Shayne Lewis) reported in the Jan. 28, 1997 issue of Soap Opera Digest that she attended Forest Hills Central in Ada, Michigan and she routinely returns for her class reunions.

Paul Rauch (former EP of GL) is described unflatteringly (though the general buzz is accurately) by Ellen Holly, original cast member of All My Children, after he took over AMC in 1984.

@scottustownhall recently tweeted “EJ Bonilla (Rafe Rivera) stars in “Musical Chairs” Mar 23.See trailer at”

Daytime Confidential put together a list of 22 Oscar winners who were on a soap opera including these from Guiding Light: James Earl Jones (Dr. Jim Frazier), Mira Sorvino (temporary recast for A.C. Mallet’s little sister, Julie), Sandy Dennis (Alice Holden, Dennis debuted in the role in 1956), and Ed Begley (busy character actor and father of Ed Begley, Jr., he was an original cast member for the TV version of the show in 1952 as Rev. Dr. Paul Keeler #1).,0
