Bauer BBQ 2017 by Robansuefarm Part 1

July 5, 2017

Author’s Note: This year’s Bauer BBQ fanfic is much more like a real set of Bauer BBQ episodes. I really love how it’s turning out and I hope you enjoy it. I haven’t broken it into actual episodes, but there are obvious places for commercial breaks that I put in.

I outlined it first and mostly stuck to that numbering so I could keep track of the different storylines.  I’ve kept my original scene numbers from my outline just to keep things easier for me, but you’ll see notes I’ve included when they’ve had to change. When I realized I needed to add a scene I added an A or a B. It really should be broken up into multiple episodes and I probably would have done that if I had gotten it done early enough, but I ran out of time. If I repost it next year, I may get that part fixed when I polish it.

So the lesson is start working on your Bauer BBQ 2018 RIGHT NOW!

Bauer BBQ 2017 by Robansuefarm Part 1

Scene 1A

It was early morning at the Bauer House. Rick Bauer stood at the flag pole in the side yard of the family home. *

He looked around at the young Bauers standing around him. He looked at his children, Jude and Leah. He had always wanted children and even if he hadn’t been able to play as active a role as he would had hoped in their lives during their younger years, he couldn’t be prouder of his children. He was only sorry he never had more. There could never be too many Bauers.

Standing next to his kids were his nephew and nieces, Robbie, Hope, and Danielle. He was still grateful that Michelle and Danny had moved back from California when they had. His little sister was raising some great kids.

“OK troops! Let’s raise the flag.”

Robbie snaps the flag open with a practiced hand. He has been doing it for years. Even before they moved to California he remembered doing this with his Grandpa Ed. It is one of Robbie’s favorite parts of the BBQ. Being careful not to let the flag touch the ground, he clipped it in place and briskly ran it up the flag pole.

Rick spoke. “Every year we start the BBQ by raising the flag. The tradition goes back to picnics Papa and Mama Bauer used to have on the Fourth. They started every one by raising the flag. Papa Bauer is who I am named for. Robbie also is partially named for him. He was your Great-Great-Grandfather and I want you to remember his gratitude for living in this country, for the new chance it gave him, and all the hard work he and Mama Bauer did giving the Bauers a strong start in this country. It’s up to you to remember and pass this knowledge along so that someday YOUR great-great-grandchildren will do this and remember how glad and how proud we are to be Americans.”

Rick says something like this to the children every year when they raise the flag. He wanted to engrave it on their memories so it would be passed on.

*NOTE: The flagpole only appeared during the BBQ when they showed this scene and seemed to be set up wherever was convenient. Since we don’t really know what was in the sideyard of the house that’s where I put it and will keep it as necessary.

Scene 1B

The group trouped over to the garage apartment. It was already bubbling with talk and laughter. Mindy was right in her element as she made breakfast with the rest of the kids that had spent the night. Friends of the Bauer kids and mostly family friends before them, spending the night before meant they had early dawn help available if they needed it and kept the kids busy if it wasn’t.

Rick paused near the door to think how beautiful and happy his wife was surrounded by children. He was sorry she never had a biological child who had lived, but she had determined to be the best step-mother and aunt in the world and, as always Rick thought with a smile, what Mindy determined to do got done.

Rick walked over and noisily kissed his wife. “How are things going in here?”

“Everybody’s doing great. I’m glad the garage apartment is empty this year. This is a lot easier than getting them breakfast in the same kitchen where we’re prepping the BBQ.”

Rick silently nodded in agreement. He loved Mindy. She was a good cook now, but she was still enough of a princess that she never washed a plate. He was glad this mess wasn’t in his prep area. Rick didn’t bother with breakfast, he just enjoyed the chaos.

Scene 2

Later Rick stood in the Bauer kitchen and surveyed his domain. The rest of the year this was a kitchen, but today it was the prep area where he launched an attack to feed an unlimited number of family, friends, coworkers, acquaintances, and even complete strangers who would show up at THE place to celebrate the Fourth in Springfield. There had been a time when he had felt so shoved to the side, almost like he, heck, the BAUERS hadn’t had a place on the canvas that was the community of Springfield. He had lost heart and so had the BBQ, but ever since 2010 after Michelle and Danny had moved back he had felt all the glory of the BBQ again and moved heaven and earth to make sure each year was the best year ever.

In a way prepping for the BBQ was like emergency triage, but this was a good kind without the pain, horror, and blood. Instead the constant attention, prioritizing, improvising was of everyone remembering the community and having a good time.

“Listen everyone! It’s time for the hat ceremony….Leah, if you’re ready.” Rick bent down and Leah picked up the Bauer BBQ chef’s hat. Ed had always worn it and Rick had taken it with great significance when Ed had passed it down to him, but since this had become his and Leah’s special moment it became even more important to him.

Everyone in the kitchen paused and clapped as Leah, put it on his head, aware of what this meant. “The Hat” was always an important part of the BBQ.

“Back to work!” Rick called as the moment passed. Once the hat was on his head he felt like a general martialing the troops. He picked up his clipboard “Reports!”

“Danny, condiments!”

“Rick, I used to run a restaurant I think I can handle….” Danny protested, but as usual it fell on deaf ears.

“I said condiments!”

Danny sighed, rolling his eyes at Michelle. “There is ketchup and mustard at two condiment stations around the backyard and plenty of back up for each. The relish and onions are ready to put out. Salt and pepper shakers and napkins on each table. Everything is ready to go.”

Rick tapped the end of his pen against his teeth. “I don’t know that this idea of yours using big pumps instead of lots of normal bottles is going to go.”

“Rick, it will be fine!” Michelle broke in.

Rick sighed and made a note to ask people about it later to find out how it had gone over.

“Michelle, desserts!”

“I made 2 dozen of Grandma Bert’s apple pies this year. They are cooling as we speak AND don’t you even think of hiding one. If you don’t get any I’ll make some again in the near future, as soon as you peel the apples for me. The watermelon is on ice and Danny has his stuff ready to carve it when ready.”

“How about the ice cream?”

“You’ll have to ask Lewis about that. He and Lizzie decided to turn hand churning ice cream into a contest this year.”

Rick frowned. This was the kind of thing he expected to be consulted on. “Blake, you may have to go on an ice cream run later.”

“Have car keys will travel. Although how I became the designated errand girl…”

“We appreciate you being ready to lend a hand when needed, Blake. Salads!”

“Rick, you can see I’m finishing up the cabbage and apple salad. Frank and Buzz have coleslaw on their list to bring and the potato salad is in the fridge.”

“Bert’s recipe?”

“Nope, you always ask me, so I got Bea’s recipe this year from Michelle. I thought it would make a nice change.” Rick’s face grew stormy until she added. “I remember it was always a struggle between Ed and Maureen. I thought I’d let Maureen win this year.”

Rick bit off his protest. Since it WAS for Maureen he let it go and checked it off his list.

“Bridget, Dylan, lettuce salad bar!”

“Rick, we make it all the way here for the BBQ this year and got here extra early so you can shout at us? I think we got it.”

Dylan cut in, figuring it was better to humor Rick. “We’re still chopping. All varieties of salad dressing requested are checked off the list. We’ve got the ice and the thermometer to check all the salads to keep them out of the danger zone.”

Rick grunted. He spared a glance. “Bridget, it’s a great think you got back with Dylan. Clearly he’s the one with sense in your family.”

Bridget picked up a pair of salad tongs to throw at Rick as he turned his back and walked away, but Dylan took them out of her hand. “Humor him.”

Just then Kevin kicked at the door. Bridget wiped her hands on a towel and went to let him in. Kevin and Jason each entered carrying two large, stuffed full reusable grocery bags a piece, closely followed by Frank and Buzz weighed down by coolers.

Buzz asked, “Are you going to give us a hand, Rick?”

“Nope, that’s what these two strapping young men are for,” he answered putting an arm around both Kevin and Jason. Rubbing his hands together, he added, “You’ve brought the ground sirloin. It’s time to make some magic…Rachel Ray and Emeril have nothing on me. Bauer Burgers here we come!” *

*NOTE: The Rachel Ray etc. line came from Michael O’Leary’s appearance on a talk show making Bauer Burgers. See my making Bauer Burgers post.

Scene 3

The boys were still eating when the girls finished and moved on to decorating. Sarah Randall and Emma Spaulding were Hope Santos’s best friends. The three of them had formed Les Tres Amigas Science Club* which had made Sarah’s Grandpa Billy laugh although he hadn’t explained why he thought the name was so funny. He wasn’t laughing at their interest in science and had helped throw open the doors to Lewis Oil walking them through the operation and answering every question they had even if he had to hunt up someone to tell them all the answer.

Today Hope, Sarah, and Emma were working with the smaller girls Dani, Frankie, and Peyton.** on decorating the Bauer House inside and out to within an inch of its life. The girls were talking and laughing happily together. Little Billy was there too, as usual joined at the hip with his best friend Dani.

Michelle trusted Hope to watch out for the other children, but after that treehouse stunt with Dani and Little Billy last March, Michelle felt better keeping them under a watchful eye so when the Coopers showed up she’d slipped out of the kitchen. The kids ran around up one ladder and down another putting up flags, banners, bunting, and sparkles wherever they could.

Michelle shook her head at a lopsided bundle on one of the portico corners. She moved one of the ladders over to climb up to fix it herself shaking her head that they could make such a din. She hadn’t gotten very far when a couple of arms came around her and pulled her off the ladder.

A sardonic, but gorgeous gaze met her own. “And what, may I ask, were you doing on a ladder?”

Michelle tried to brazen it out, pretending her husband wasn’t holding her in his arms. She smoothed out her top and picked a couple of imaginary pieces of lint off her culottes. “I was straightening that bundle of course. It would be done by now, if you hadn’t had to show off those big muscles of yours.” Michelle crossed her arms and scowled at him.

Danny laughed as he put her down. “None of that little missy. I’m on to your tricks. You were on that ladder when you KNOW we agreed you wouldn’t be. I’m not letting you pick a different fight to get off the hook. I think I see where your daughter got her illicit climbing inclinations.”

“Perfectly, right – from you!” Michelle said frostily, but with just a hint of a smile behind it as she gestured towards her old balcony with her head. Then she blushed and smiled. “OK you caught me. I said I wouldn’t get on any ladders today, but it would only take me a minute to fix that one crocked bunch….”

“Correction. It will just take ME a minute. Now tell me exactly what you want me to do.”

Michelle’s smile grew downright naughty, but now was not the time, so she had Danny straighten the clump until it was perfect.

*NOTE: Les Tres Amigos or LTA was an independent oil company started in the early 1980s. The original members were Josh Lewis (Billy’s brother), Amanda Spaulding, and Ross Marler. Eventually Billy came to town and pushed his way in. It eventually was folded into Lewis Oil. Clearly the children never heard of it and why should they have….until Grandpa Billy gets around to explaining the joke.

**NOTE: Dani Santos (Manny’s daughter), Frankie Cooper (Daughter of Frank Cooper and Natalia Aitoro), and Peyton Spaulding.

Scene 4

Meanwhile in Chicago, a helmeted figure, dress all in black leather, adjust the chin strap on his helmet with the smoke visor. He pulled on his leather gloves. He approached his black Indian motorcycle. He saddled up, revved the engine and turned the bike south, towards Springfield.

Children of Springfield 2017

May 10, 2017

Back in 2014 before I could really dig into my Manny Bauer BBQ fanfic for the year I had to stop and figure out what children would be running around and how old they would be now. Sadly it’s been awhile now since we’ve seen any of them. I thought this might be helpful for anyone wanting to write a “present day” Springfield story. I’m especially looking for any Bauer BBQ fanfic of any couple, any era and I’m making myself a challenge to at least get the start of one done by July 1st, so I’m challenging you as well. And don’t worry, this year I have the Manny part of the plot figured out so I just have to decide what other people are doing around them.

I came back and did an update last year in 2016. I think it needs to be an annual post to keep us all on the same Guiding Light page. Here we go for 2017.

Manny Move Back

In the previous post I shared some of my reasoning and notes to show my work and let it stand for possible addition and corrections. I recently read a very persuasive article that said what truly made an article academic was to show your work and admit you could be wrong. So I’m admitting I was wrong. I have good reason to switch up the Marler children and switch them back to airdate birth age so I did.

Below you’ll find a list in reverse chronological order with the changes marked with an *. Please note these are often rough calculations and any of them could be subject to SORAS at any given time. Personally I like to watch kids grow up on screen, so I won’t be SORASing.

Sadly I’ve had to leave the mess age wise that is James Spaulding and Daisy/Susan LeMay/Cooper because there is just no way to leave it and no way fix it and keep any kind of continuity, so we are just swallowing it and going on. So James, Daisy, and Ashlee are all safely graduated from college now and in the young adult storyline, where no one has no idea how old anybody is. But just for the heck of it going by Zach Conroy’s age, James Spaulding should be 32 and so should Ashlee Wolfe according to Caitlain VanZandt’s age. If take James’s age when we meet him fresh out of boarding school to be 18, he should be 26 instead. At the rate she was going Daisy/Susan is probably now 4.

There could be any number of other children around, for example maybe Alan-Michael and Lucy have kids, as could any number of other people that we had lost track of on screen or since 2009. These are children that are reasonable to assume are around. I’ll gladly take suggestions of others. The only children I’ve listed are those we know on screen, plus Danielle who I created in my Springfield Bound story which Michelle told Danny about shortly after Rick and Mindy’s wedding as shown in the flashforward and so would have been born in 2011 and so is now 6.

Moved de-SORASed on my list are the Marler children. Basically our post-show triangle between Robbie Santos, Sarah Randall, and Clarissa Marler required them to be closer in age so I reverted from an approximation based on SORAS when last seen back to airdate birthdays. I had previously added Rocky Cooper in just because it still ticks me off that they basically sent him off into the attic to look for skis so I like to mention him when I reasonably can. I had used the SORASed Coop’s (his older brother’s) last on screen actors age and subtracted the difference on screen, but I decided to ignore that since Coop is dead anyway and return to airdate birthday because makes Rocky more available.

So here is my list. I’m probably missing people. Let me know who else you think should be included. Whether these children would actually be around town or not is, of course, up to you and how you plot your story.

In reverse chronological order, the current children of Springfield:

Danielle “Dani” Meta Santos, 6

H.B. Lewis IV, 7

Francesca Cooper, 7

Henry Cooper Lewis, 8

Colin O’Neill, 9

Peyton Spaulding, 9

Emma Spencer Spaulding, 11

Sarah Randall, 11

Hope Maureen Santos, 12

Leah Bauer, 15

“Robbie” Robert Frederico Santos, 16

Jude Bauer, 16

Clarissa Marler, 17*

Zach Spaulding, 18

Rocky Bradshaw Cooper, 19*

Maureen Reardon, 20

Kevin Marler, 21*

Jason Marler, 21*

Christmas 2001 A Christmas Tale

December 21, 2016

Springfield sometimes turned the Christmas episode into a special focused episode that didn’t exactly disrupt the normal storylines, but were sort of a moment out of time just at that moment in time. Such was the case during Christmas 2001.

This Christmas episode reflects back on the best Christmas episodes of the past. The main character is Kris Kringle who seems to be a modern day version of Santa Nick who has dropped in to spread magic around Springfield. There is even a connection to the Mike Bauer singing at the end of this one. It’s well worth watching.

xmas-2001

Michelle and Robbie Santos, Harley Cooper and Jude Bauer, Blake, Jason, and Kevin Marler, Holly and Meg Reade

A Christmas Tale

Ross gathers everyone up at the Bauer cabin with Aunt Meta and the Bloss children – Jason, Kevin, and Clarissa who was born one year also at the Bauer cabin. He brings them to the fireplace and starts to tell a Christmas story or rather a Christmas Eve story that takes place right there in Springfield.

Michelle, Blake, Harley, and Holly carry in a real Christmas tree  – in their dress coats. They work on setting up and decorating the tree. Meanwhile, at the Lewis House, Shayne is resisting staying in his elf costume that he has on to match Josh as Santa. When Billy shows up, Shayne passes on the elf hat to Billy although he won’t fit the rest of the costume and they are off to Towers to fill in as Santa. As we look around town we find irritation everywhere as we have the warmest Christmas on record at 65 degrees F outside.

More than one person called out the calvary and Phillip and Beth show up as Santa and Mrs. Claus. (That’s a TERRIBLE Mrs. Claus outfit, but couldn’t Billy at least taken off his tie and suit coat to look more elf like?) Meanwhile Reva realizes bulldozing into the elevator stuck her with Olivia and Edmund.

“Santa is short a reindeer, Frosty must confront the sun…..and now power lines are about to fall.”

A blackout hits all over Springfield. After a confrontation over who was going to play Santa, Phillip agreed to let Josh have the job although it seemed like Beth (still influenced by Loreli) is ready to rumble, However they realize that there is now 2 feet of snow on the ground and no one is going anywhere soon. Olivia, Edmund, and Reva are pretty darn hilarious. They ought to have been forced together more often.

December 24, 201 (Part One)

Even story tellers get a commercial break. Ross: “You know there are four generations gathered here in the Bauer Cabin…” Everyone else: “Story! Story! Story!” Santa Josh was overwhelmed so Phillip and Beth opened a second station on Santa’s knee and worked together. Reva told the story of the Christmas truce during World War I. Reva’s story inspires Reva, Edmund, and Olivia to call a truce of their own and share Reva’s catering and Olivia’s champagne in their own Christmas Eve dinner. Gus finally shows the Christmas spirit and gives up the offer of a ride in the 4-wheel drive truck to the guys going up to the Bauer cabin to reach their families. Not knowing Gus did that, Rick asks if Gus could come along too but the “security guard” says there’s no room.

December 24, 2001 (Part Two)

The guys show up at Bauer Cabin reporting that on their way the roads were terrible and then they rounded a corner and everything cleared. Danny meets Michelle with a kiss and a ‘Hi, Tiger” for Robbie. Sigh! Meta pulls Ross aside and says she knows it’s not the end of the story and she wants to know what happens next. With the roads now clear will the Christmas spirit spread over the outcasts too? Edmund, Olivia, and Gus are all miserable at Towers each eating alone with two poor Towers employees stuck working. Edmund remembers Reva’s story and moves to the piano and starts to sing “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” The others join in and everyone from the Bauer Cabin, the Lewis house, and the Spaulding Mansion come in.

December 24, 2001 (Part Three)

Go Fish by Kellie

July 21, 2016

Republisher’s Note: Here is a story I haven’t republished before. It’s a nice character piece story, but it’s definitely part of the Making Love category. Before they have Robbie, Michelle and Danny are babysitting the Bloss twins, Kevin and Jason, and Clarissa.

Author’s Note: This story is NC-17.

Go Fish by Kellie

Michelle came down the stairs and collapsed on the sofa. “I can’t believe how hard it is to get Kevin and Jason settled in bed. Before one I could get one situated, the other would ask for something else…water, to use the bathroom, read another story. I understand now why Blake and Ross needed a night away from the children. How’d you do with Clarissa?”

“She’s sound asleep, but I still think you got the better end of that deal,” Danny replied.

“How do you figure that?”

“After you took Jason and Kevin up for baths, Clarissa had a dirty diaper.”

“My heart bleeds for you, darling. One dirty diaper versus two rambunctious boys in the bath tub. I think I’ll take diapers any day.”

“Let me write that one down for future reference when we have our own kids,” Danny laughed.

Michelle shook her head, unable to think of an appropriate comeback. She stood and began picking up the toys that were scattered across the room. “Blake brought enough toys to outfit a toy store,” she commented.

Danny stood and began to help Michelle put the toys back in the laundry basket Ross had used to lug the pile into the house. She finally sat down on the floor and started gathering up the set of Go Fish cards Kevin and Jason had spread across the coffee table. Danny took a seat on the sofa across from her and began to help gather up the cards. “Go Fish, it’s been a long time since I played that game,” he remarked.

“Yeah, I always beat Rick when he’d play me,” she remembered.

“You’re looking at the Go Fish champion,” he replied.

“Oh, really?”

“Yeah, I bet I could beat you.”

“Sounding awfully confident, Mr. Santos.”

“I know I could win, hands down.”

“Why don’t we just see about that?” she purred.

“Is that a challenge?”

“Absolutely. Are you game?”

“On one condition.”

“What would that be?”

“To make the game a little more interesting, every time you have to give me a card I ask for, you also remove an article of clothing.”

Michelle arched an eyebrow as she said, “Your mind is in the gutter, Santos.”

“Yeah, and you love me anyhow.”

“You shuffle the cards while I go check and make sure the twins are asleep,” she replied as she shook her head.

Danny watched as Michelle quickly slipped up the stairs. When she returned, she moved the baby monitor to the coffee table. “Kevin and Jason are out cold. They look like angels when they sleep, you’d never know they were such a handful when they’re awake. Clarissa is sound asleep, too. You did a good job getting her settled.”

“Of course.” Danny replied as he dealt the cards.

Michelle looked at her hand. She quickly pulled out a matching set within her hand. “Okay, who’s going first?”

“I dealt, you go first,” Danny replied.

“Do you have a swordfish?”

“Go fish,” he replied.

Michelle reached out and pulled a card from the stack in the center and added it to her hand since there were no matches.

“Do you have a marlin?”

Michelle arched her eyebrow as she pulled the card from her hand and passed it to Danny. “And the clothing…”

Michelle reached down and took her tennis shoes off and passed them to Danny. Laying his cards face down, he held his nose with one hand as he took the shoes.

“Danny, my shoes don’t smell!” she remarked as she crossed her arms.

“Michelle, it’s just a joke. I’d gladly take your shoes, even if they did smell.”

She shook her head as they continued the game. Soon, Michelle had taken everything but Danny’s boxers and she was left sitting in her bra and panties. It was Danny’s turn. Michelle sat in anticipation as he said, “I’ll take a flounder and your bra.”

“You’re mighty sure of yourself,” she replied.

“Quit stalling, give me the card and your bra,” he said.

“How can you be so sure I have it?”

“Because you would have taken great pleasure in telling me to Go Fish if you didn’t.”

“If you want it, you have to come get it,” she sing songed as she stuck the card under the back clasp of her bra. Danny rose to his feet and walked around the table. Michelle stood and began to back away from him. He reached out and rested his hands on her hips as he pulled her closer and buried his head in her reddish brown hair. His hands moved up to the clasp and he grabbed the card, “Got it, now what shall I do about this bra?” he whispered in her ear as he unhooked the clasp. He pulled away momentarily and watched as she dropped the straps down her arms and the peach, lace bra fell to the floor.

“Your turn,” he said as he pulled her closer.

“Forget the game”, she said as she caressed his erection with her hand while dropping to her knees. She slipped her fingers underneath the elastic waistband of the paisley silk boxers and pulled them to the floor. Returning her hands to his penis, she guided it into her mouth and began to pleasure him.

“Michelle…” he moaned as he came in her mouth. When she released him from her mouth, she stood. Danny wrapped his arms around her, “I think we should continue this upstairs,” he whispered.

“I like that idea,” she replied as he picked her up and headed for the stairs. As they reached the bottom step, Clarissa’s cries broke out from the baby monitor.

“Are you sure you want that house full of children?” she asked with a laugh.

“If they’re as gorgeous as you are, definitely,” he answered as he put her down.

“You clean up in here and I’ll grab my robe and take care of Clarissa,” Michelle said as she climbed the stairs.

Bauer BBQ 2001 Update 2014

July 6, 2014

Huzzah! I found more. I now have three full episodes, scroll down for the links. Check out the original version of this post with a link to highlight clips only:

Rick Michelle Robbie 2001

Rick Michelle Robbie 2001

This is one of my favorite Bauer BBQs and actually it’s one of my favorite years in Springfield period. It’s just a great time period. We are just on the tail end of an umbrella story that had Edmund marry Beth and take the kids and Lillian down to San Cristobel, take over the throne (turns out Richard wasn’t legitimate, long story), and kidnap Cassie. Phillip was down with Richard helping with a coup. Harley’s pregnancy is actually part of the pay off of a storyline that when Abby left him, Harley realized Phillip had impregnated Beth and lied about it, Eleni had left Frank, and Selena had left Buzz they all got together and got drunk and Harley and Rick slept together. Harley got pregnant and while Phillip was divorcing Harley and had his attention focused on rescuing Beth and his kids and Harley’s kid Susan from Edmund’s influences, Harley and Rick hid it from him. We’re almost up to this point in our episode guide, basically as the last part of The Perfect Storm. They got Danny out of trouble with the mob and the immediate problem with FBI, but Gus Aitoro is committed to getting him. Michelle had destroyed the evidence May had against them. So Gus pressured Harley into becoming his assistant and pressured her into planting a bug in the Bauer living room. Gus also got Harley to get all of the Bauers out of the house and used the opportunity to get Danny’s home gun (he’d killed Carmen with his office gun) and to get a cartridge to plant to frame Danny. Danny will shortly go on trial. Josh and Reva split up over the revelation that Reva had been married to Richard when she was gone. Reva is also currently temporarily blinded. Josh married Olivia and Reva is dating Noah. Tony had broken up with Marah to keep her safe, but not understanding that she’s using Sam to make him jealous and Catalina is taking advantage of the situation, apparently not caring that he didn’t care enough about HER welfare to push her away. The funniest storyline right now requires you to swallow the fact that Buzz would be interested in Holly even though she was fairly directly responsible for Jenna’s death. When Billy got out of jail for shooting Roger Thorpe, Buzz Cooper stepped up and got him probation/work release. They fought a friendly competition for Holly’s affection that I think had more to do with beating each other than Holly. Holly took it mostly in that spirit and will dump them both in a nanosecond as soon as Ed comes back to town and gives her a second look.

Find the prep from the day before in the highlight clip. Tony is upset because he thinks they should be doing something for the case prep.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJQPfFSRF4I (Watch night before prep first two minutes, after that switch to full episodes at the bottom.)

Danny: “You’re going to upset, Michelle.”

Tony: “She’ll be more upset when you go to jail for murder.”

Danny: “Yes she is. So the least I can do right now is to give her every bit of happiness and normalcy that I can manage. Do you understand?”

July 4, 2001

2001 provides one of the most detailed prep periods. I just love Rick as general of the BBQ and they could have done it every year. I don’t know why they never had Danny behind the bar at the BBQ. He does such a good job when he works at Millennium. I just love his speech about the drinks he makes when they hire him. I think it’s a total waste of talent and obviously between this and burning the money in San Cristobel it just shows that as much as I love him, the boy can’t grill. I love his BLACK Hawaiian shirt. I wish he’d worn it to the last one, I didn’t really care for his outfit for Bauer BBQ 2009, although once I realized his shorts matched Robbie’s it grew on me. I could just see Robbie picking them out to be like his Dad. Happy sigh!

I would have liked to see Danny in the apron and THE HAT. I thought it was a bit much to say Robbie wouldn’t wear the hat either. I greatly look forward to the day when Robbie wears the hat. The line about have your own son was because Harley was coming in (apparently via the patio doors far away from any parking area) and she was pregnant with Rick’s son Jude Bauer.

Beth had believed in the fairytale of Edmund after she had lost Phillip to Harley. Beth believed in Edmund’s story until she discovered he’d locked Cassie in a tower. He really didn’t mean her THAT much harm, but he got sick himself and Cassie was stuck without food and water and almost died. When Beth discovered her rather than letting Beth leave him and tell people he locked her in. Beth freaked broke out a window and fell that’s why she was in the hospital. Richard was a cool guy. Jeffery was a complete loser in comparison.

Reva was temporarily blinded, basically for the sake of the story of when her sight came back. For once Reva is doing a story Michelle already did and not the other way around.  That’s kind of late for the party to be starting normally people arrive around noon, but they just seem to be arriving and it’s dark out. Josh and Olivia were still married and he’d brought her into Lewis Construction and they had put in a bid for a MAJOR construction project in San Cristobel. Olivia’s government contracts were signed by Edmund with Richard coming back as elected President the contracts were in question. Paul-Anthony-Stewart-Jordi-Vilasuso-PGP-L

Tony and Ray are Danny’s cousins, so now pulled in to helping with the BBQ. Danny is currently being prosecuted for his mother’s death (which he thinks he did in defense of life but covered it up – Carmen really is still alive and the body they pull out of the lake isn’t hers). FBI Agent Gus Aitoro, who is behind the prosecution, is trying to get Danny because he holds Danny’s father responsible for his own father’s death and Gus intends to get revenge on Danny. (Apparently in all that lawyer learning he got, he skipped the bit in the Constitution about the no contamination of the blood clause – meaning that children can’t be punished for their parent’s crimes.) Gus is currently working up to romancing Harley who is pregnant with Rick’s child Jude.

I love Rick’s little show at the beginning of the clip. They refer back to both Rick’s wearing the hat and Danny hating the hat and apron when Manny return at Bauer BBQ 2009. Phillip has just returned from San Cristobel where he was trying to rescue Beth and his children and Harley’s daughter Susan. I think Harley is referring to when Phillip leads a commando style raid to rescue Beth from Edmund. As their marriage broke up, (I will spare Pharley fans my analysis about why it never stood a chance to begin with) in part over Phillip’s constant efforts to protect Beth, this latest rescue went over like a lead balloon with Harley, even though her own daughter was involved. She is currently pregnant with Rick’s child, the future Jude Bauer, from a drunken one night stand.

Fire breaks out.

Ray: “Anyone for well done?”

Danny: “I’m just getting the hang of it.”

Rick: “We only have so much chicken here. You are now in charge of coleslaw and pouring the iced tea.”

That was a great couple communication when with a couple of significant looks, Michelle tells Danny that Rick is the father of Harley’s baby.

Rick to Tony: “Take over here and keep Danny away from the BBQ. I don’t want him blowing up the house.”

Seriously Harley, I know you think you’ve done the right thing, but honestly you’re betraying some of your best friends. I don’t blame Tony and Danny from being mad at her.  Harley still gets Tony to act like her trying to put his cousin on death row is no big deal.

Harley: “Feed me. I’m hungry.”

Tony: “How about this one, it’s fried to a crisp like you’re trying to do to my cousin.”

Blake and her twin sons Jason and Kevin come running in with water pistols and then Ross carries in Clarissa. At this point Blake had published her 2nd book. (Her first book was the romance she imagined between Ross and Holly while she was pregnant with Clarissa and hiding from Ross at the Bauer BBQ.) She had decided to use Selena Davis’s true life story of a romance with Miguel Santos (which produced a never seen on screen Miguel Santos, Jr.) as the basis of this second book. (When she could have used Manny? Or Jezz? Or Bloss or even Blen? Why Selena?)  However, Blake’s failure to disguise the people involved adequately led to either Abuela or Carmen putting a hit out on Selena. Selena barely made it out of town in time, leaving Buzz heartbroken and beaten by the goons that came after her. Blake is thinking that stirring up the past led to Danny being on the murder charge, hence the apology.

So family stories get passed down. Tony has been told the hot tub was covered because “some kid almost drowned.” Marah remembers the incident involved Kevin Marler, but being a Springfielder utterly dismisses it. So someone almost died, they’d have come back! LOL. Sam is like I’m getting all the making out I can get from this bad deal as Marah tries to make Tony jealous, not knowing he’d broken up with her to protect her. Reva is currently dating Noah (a San Cristobel combination doctor and spy) basically to keep from getting bored when Josh refused to heel back from Olivia fast enough. The best thing about them was their couple code which was Nova – one of the best ever. Noah was down in San Cristobel because he was helping Richard over throw Edmund and rescue Cassie. Noah, not being an idiot, could tell sometimes that Reva just wasn’t that into him. Alan was dating Claire Ramsey at the time and it was too bad that he broke up with her because they were actually a pretty cool couple. So glad that Phillip is going to take Lizzie and James to the BBQ. Richard shows up to surprise Cassie at the BBQ. This is a very prominent Rassie moment. That’s really sweet how both Tammy and RJ both totally adopted Richard as their dad.

July 5, 2001

Phillip didn’t know Harley was pregnant. Nice reminder that Phillip saw Michelle as almost a little sister. I love how familiar Danny is with the hospital and its staff, it just goes to show that he spends a lot of off camera time there lunching with Rick, dropping off Michelle, etc. I just think it’s nice. Danny: “No it’s just some friend of Rick’s from the hospital.”

This is my favorite haircut on Danny. It’s just gorgeous and it’s shown to full effect during his conversation with Tony which does a nice job of showing of their positive relationship. Beth had been a bit blind, but Edmund did encourage her to be more of an equal partner than any of  her other boyfriends/husbands. He just lied…a lot and plotted some.

Considering Phillip got the woman Rick loved/was married to twice before, I don’t think he has a lot of moral high ground to stand on here. This is one of the most mature scenes ever for Beth. I like her taking responsibility. Oh, Michelle is carrying around Robbie behind Jolivia, he’s so cute!

Richard: “Only a natural catastrophe could stop this project.” I laughed too because that’s exactly what stops it, an earthquake. The writers must have known already. 🙂

Harley is actually wrong here. Harley basically hates Beth because she wanted to erase her very existence from Phillip’s life and she wouldn’t disappear. Harley reads as a stronger character than Beth, but she made just as many stupid repeated mistakes. And considering that Harley hasn’t been through a tenth of what Beth was I don’t think it’s fair to compare them.

Reva watches the fireworks with Josh and actually sees sparks of light.

This a great jalapeno fight between Buzz and Billy over Holly. Blake apologizes to Danny for the trouble her book caused. Danny very kindly tells her there’s no need and just shows what great step-siblings-in-law they will be.

Gus has no right to come to Bauer BBQ, but he is starting to chase after Harley, he will ultimately catch her, and he’s trying to make Danny miserable so he comes. Really Gus is lucky Danny isn’t the man Gus thinks he is or Gus would be in the lake by now. Lucky for Danny he isn’t though because later Gus does make some amends for faking evidence against Danny etc., by saving his life from the warehouse fire and they grow to have a more friendly, although still very prickly relationship. Gus should really give up the quips, he’s no Ben Warren. Currently Gus is making up to Blake hoping to get more information from Selena and find out who Blake’s source was which nobody will tell him although most of the people we know in town either know or could guess. Not having learned her lesson with Ben Warren, Blake is heavily flirting back to him trying to get information out of him. Ultimately she will turn up the evidence that shows who Gus really is (at least who he thinks he is at this point) and the lengths he will go to try to destroy Danny. BOO GUS! HISSSSS! At this point Bloss and Manny are really each other’s closest couple friends, although not as close as Dresse and Manny had been. Blake and Michelle share the bond that they were once and future step-sisters and I wish the show had played that up more rather than playing Blake as a Thorpe all the time. She was Bauer to in a very real way although her efforts to help Manny get out of legal trouble (which she actually does a couple of times) are as close as they get to playing Blake and Michelle as sisters.

Not a good idea, Frank? How about highly illegal? Once someone who is an occupant of a house asks you to leave you are supposed unless you are also an occupant which Gus wasn’t.

Finally, having survived Selena breaking his heart (I really think he was mostly with Selena to keep himself from dwelling on Jenna being gone and to give her full credit Selena, she was very good with his kids), Buzz was ready to move on to Holly. While Buzz really should have had issues with Holly who’s actions had helped bring about Jenna’s death, look around the canvas and there aren’t a lot of more tenable options. They move into a triangle with Buzz-Holly-Billy. Buzz and Billy were friends because when Billy was released from prison from trying to kill Roger Thorpe, Buzz was supportive and gave Billy a job. They had formed a friendship and I think their love of competing with each other played more into the romance than anything about Holly which is good because she will dump them both flat the SPLIT SECOND Ed returns to town. However, at this point they are still fighting over her. Billy had doctored up a bowl of chili to make it superhot to give to Buzz to keep him away from Holly. Buzz put it down and Gus picked it up and took a huge spoonful. Billy is the only one who understands Gus’s reaction and that’s why he’s laughing his head off.

July 6, 2001

I think Phillip has a point about the “Cooper” attitude. Buzz was always terrible to Phillip, which considering Buzz’s history took a lot of gall. Michelle says the kids are watching cartoons in the den. Nice the rarely seen den got a shout out. This is the start of Harley’s Phillip is evil incarnate downslide. I think Phillip has a reason to be upset and I don’t think it was arrogant for Phillip to think that the only one to get Harley pregnant while they were still married was him. Harley should have taken it as complement. Rick is also right Harley spends a lot of time cutting Rick out of Jude’s life which sucks considering how long Rick longed for a kid of his own to raise. Actually I think Buzz gets so mad because Phillip is exactly right about what Buzz is doing.

I hate the way the Coopers keep trying to take over the BBQ. Buzz to Blake: “Don’t confuse me with facts.”

This is a nice Ross-Phillip conversation. Ross had his faults, but he was always a great mentor to Phillip. Oh, point Ross, “Just the way you told your wife you had a kid coming with Beth.” Ross to Rick: “[Phillip] is in run silent, run deep mode, you know how he gets.

Rick’s right that he did betray Phillip, but again they have a two for one score here.

With moves like these Sam is using on Marah I don’t know why he never really had a love interest of his own. Susan/Daisy had the best chemistry with him and she left the show a couple of months in. But Sam just never seemed to get Marah just wasn’t into him. Really it wasn’t Noah’s place to tell Reva’s kids about their engagement. Really nice Danny-Rick conversation at the end.

Uneven SORAS-ing

April 4, 2013

I thought that I had posted about this before, but it turns out that was only on the Mannyac discussion board, so I’m going to post about it here now. SORAS is an acronym that stands for Soap Opera Rapid Aging Syndrome or less commonly Sudden Onset Rapid Aging Syndrome. It’s used to describe when soap writers, convinced pre-teen and more so teenagers offer more storyline grist than younger children, send a child off screen for a couple of months and brings them back years older. Everyone on screen pretends they grew up in real time and it isn’t strange at all.

6 Storyline Connected Children

The uneven SORAS-ing is of Susan/Daisy Cooper – Zach Spaulding – Robbie Santos – Jude Bauer – Leah Bauer – Hope Santos really messed up the story continuity (see soap opera jargon page) in the last few years of Guiding Light. Much like The Young and the Restless‘ later uneven SORAS-ing of Kyle and Abby when their conception was part of the same storyline, the SORAS makes the history we saw on screen completely impossible. Much of the rest of this was written in July 2009 after watching the Bauer BBQ.

I liked Danny’s line at the last Bauer BBQ about how he thinks Robbie will be taller than him any day. It was just so REAL. I’m so glad they brought Patrick Gilbert (who played Robbie as a toddler on) back as Robbie Santos, it really does add to the reality and charm of the Manny story.

Differences in SORAS for Characters

They have really messed up past storyline continuity with uneven SORASing of the kids. The order of age of kids onscreen should be Daisy/Susan – Zach – Robbie -James – Jude- Leah – Hope. It is especially important with this particular group of kids because if they hadn’t been born in that particular order they probably wouldn’t have been born at all, at least to those particular parents. However, in a throw away line in July 2009 Phillip said Zach was entering kindergarten in the fall. Robbie is still the right age of course since they brought the same actor back. Jude is presumably still younger than Zach, but his age isn’t directly referenced. Leah is now signing up for college. Hope is the right age. Lucie St. Alban (who played Hope) is Nancy St. Alban’s daughter who was the pregnancy they wrote in for Hope’s birth.

Rick, who spent the first entire 2/3rds of his life trying to have a child to pass on his special relationship with Bert, has barely seen his two children once he had them. Jude is now living IN GREECE with Harley. (Why didn’t they just bring back Haley Sparks as Harley again and let that horrible storyline end?) Still living in Greece is better than Blake and Ross’ children Kevin, Jason, and Clarissa who seem to have evaporated years ago. James and Daisy (who do have nice romantic chemistry) are so off age, it’s terrible. They kept Daisy roughly 18 for WAY too long. When she came back, they re-did with Grady in a more dangerous way all the story they originally did with Max the first time they brought her back, except Max was good deep down and Grady was psycho. Daisy was roughly 14 when James was BORN and he was her double step-brother and she thought half-brother at the time. Apparently they didn’t see each other for years and didn’t even recognize each other by face or seemingly by name when they met again a few months ago. He was a baby, but what was her excuse?

TPTB are so uneven on memory. When Edmund died, I had just seen an old clip of Edmund giving Lizzie the stuffed white horse to fight cancer, and they showed Lizzie bringing out what looked like the exact same stuffed horse when she talked about how he helped her. They can do stuff like that, but can’t keep to a timeline or look at a calendar for anniversaries, even when changing things doesn’t drive story. I don’t get it.

What Age the Children Should Be and Why Birth Order Matters

This is my thought process for how I remembered relative ages and it shows how intertwined their stories were and why they had to be born in the exact order they were, despite the fact that they were SORAS-ed completely out of order. Leah is the worst since she went from born to 16 just because they wanted her to be teen upset during Mel and Rick’s breakup which they featured for like 2 minutes and have barely used her since. I had to do a little figuring about where James is on my list. Let’s see. Phillip and Harley had Zach already during Harley’s fantasy at the Millennium Party when Michelle was on trial for Ben’s murder and Jim was still alive then. James was conceived during the plane crash when Phillip and Beth were flying back from San Cristobel the year before Jim died in the Christmas tree fire. James was definitely before Jude because James was part of what broke up Phillip and Harley before she slept with Rick and conceived Jude. Robbie was a toddler when Jude was born and Rick and Danny were talking about using one of those baby sling things and how great it was. So, relying on memory, Robbie and Jude should be about within a year of each other one way or the other. I got that far and decided to cheat and check Soap Central’s character profiles. Neither James, nor Robbie have one, but in Lizzie’s and Danny’s respectively, it says James saved her from cancer in 2000 and Robbie was born in 2001. Leah was born in 2004 and Hope was born in 2005.

And my friend Carmen later gave this clarification about Hope.

Lucie was born in 2005. She was born in May, and Hope was born in October. Interesting that Robbie and Hope are both the right ages.

UPDATE June 26, 2015: This is one of my favorite posts so I was glad to take the chance to come back to it. I added more to the introduction part rather than assume everyone new what SORAS meant. I added the headings and totally reworked about 3 sentences to make them read better. I also added my signature block. I hope you enjoyed revisiting this post as much as I did.

UPDATE May 31 2016: Just fixed 2 typos I missed before.

Thanksgiving 1998

November 22, 2012

Thanksgiving at Millennium 1998 – Nov 24-30, 1998

This format is a little different because I originally did it as part of the episode guide. I’ve replaced the highlights with links to full episodes that I didn’t have it the first time I published it. I’ve also increased the elsewhere in Springfield part explaining the other storylines. My comments at the bottom are Manny related.

Tues., Nov. 24, 1998 – Millennium is closed for a private Thanksgiving party Michelle is hosting. Michelle unsuccessfully tries to lead an increasingly more inquisitive Danny away from suspecting them as his brother’s killers. When he pushes her buttons, Michelle tells Danny the truth about how much Mick was despised and, as the conversation escalates, Jesse walks in, misreads the situation, and threatens Danny. After Danny storms off, Michelle is convinced that he suspects the truth about their involvement in Mick’s death.

Elsewhere in Springfield, we’re on the Pharley honeymoon after they are married in New York. Dart are really doing some cute stuff, Dinah has arranged for Hart and Bridget’s son (Vanessa’s former adopted son) to come in for the weekend. Cassie chooses to leave town and goes to stay in Chicago to get some distance between her and Hart. Vanessa and Hart continue to have conflict. Vanessa thinks Beth is the Nursery Rhyme Stalker mostly because she sees her as a rival and wants to be rid of her. She probably believes it though. When Teri DeMarco shows up at Mattessa’s house she remind Dinah of Annie Dutton.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqiKH_kprlc (Part 4)

Wed., Nov. 25, 1998 – Michelle panics when Danny realizes that she seems to know something about what happened to his brother. She tells him that no one liked his brother because he sold drugs out of the club. Jesse then threatens Danny and warns him not to hurt Michelle. Thanksgiving is nearly ruined when Lizzie Spaulding and Marina Cooper go missing. Jenna is convinced her evil ex, Jeffery Morgan, has the girls and Michelle tells the police she thinks Danny may have taken them. Det. Frank Cooper (Marina’s father) is convinced and has him picked up and returned to Millennium. Danny laughs at the idea that he would do that and when India von Halkein suggests he’d want a ransom payment knowing the Spauldings are rich, Danny tells her that the Santos family has its own money. Danny offers to join the search and he finds the girls hiding and afraid to come back in an upper room. When Lizzie falls through the grate they were spying through, Danny saves her life. Everyone apologizes to Danny and he’s asked to stay for dinner, but when Michelle runs off, Danny follows her out of the club. Alan Spaulding gives a Thanksgiving toast.

Elsewhere in Springfield, some beautiful shots of the Spaulding Dining Room. Vicki falls right in to the Spaulding habit of calling their cook “Cook” not by name. Apparently the position is held by a male right now. Vicki and Alex’s relationship creates sparks. The Lewis family (Jeva branch anyway) has gathered at Cross Creek. Part of the problem between Cassie and Jeva was that Terri had Josh come onto Cassie and then deny it while under the influence of the mind control drug. Dinah has figured out Teri is really Annie Dutton. India and Alex being in town at the same time always means fireworks, India blames Alex for taking her family’s name and money and causing India’s father’s death. Holly is the Nursery Rhyme Stalker and is falling apart. Jenna is horrified because she thinks her ex-husband Jeffery Morgan might have taken the boys. He’d sent her a threatening letter. This is a good illustration of what Lizzie-Marina’s friendship was like. Sadly it was dropped once they SORAS-ed Marina. Part of Annie’s plan to get Reva was to leave her a coin in her will saying it would take all love from Reva’s life. She keeps bringing it back and leaving it where Reva will find it. We start to get a truer picture of just how awful Ben’s childhood was which led to him being permanently scarred before the surgeon fixed them while he was in college. Josh gives a great tribute to Cross Creek in part 4.

Mon., Nov. 30, 1998 – Danny tried to sit next to Michelle at Thanksgiving Dinner, but overwrought Michelle leaves her own party. Danny follows and finds Michelle on the beach where Mick was killed and tries to talk to her in hopes to find out more about his brother’s death. He tells her that Mick told him they flirted a lot and Jesse’s reaction to him when he hadn’t even done anything today showed Jesse could be violent. Danny: “Does he love you enough to kill for you?” Michelle starts to crack under this implication and says Jesse didn’t even know what Mick did to her, but Jesse arrives and blows up before she can say more. Michelle covers to Jesse that she asked Danny to go for a walk with her. While Danny doesn’t defend himself from Jesse pushing him around he smiles, “I learned a lot.”

Elsewhere in Springfield, Blake feels empathy and understanding for Ben as she begins to understand how awful his life was growing up. Dinah impressively figured out almost immediately that Terri was really Annie Dutton, but far from impressed Annie has pulled a gun on her. Ross and India are moving along with what was a cute if temporary romance. India and Ross had both tried to rent this apartment. India actually had it first, but her current financial embarrassment is part of the reason she’s giving it up. Selena Davis who was in California trying to track down the child that was taken from her and adopted out. She didn’t have any luck (mainly because the child is Drew which she hasn’t figured out yet) and now is back in town. She’s becoming more friendly with Drew even pre-daughter discovery and gives absolutely no sign that she knows the Santos family well (at least Miguel in the Biblical sense as is revealed later).

My Comments:

The diner scene. Danny is really upset that no one bothered to come to Mick’s funeral from Millennium. I don’t think he’d really settled in his own mind yet that the foursome had anything to do with Mick’s death. He was just stirring things up to see what happened and what he could find out. He kind of hoped that maybe they had been at least friendly with Mick and would be there. I think he already especially hoped Michelle would be there and if she doesn’t feel guilty for not going now, I think it will be an ongoing regret in her life that she wasn’t there for him that day when she could have been. Danny feels they’re not being there is further rejection by Springfield elite, like Mick didn’t count. Michelle’s reaction is also, I think, genuine when she asks why Danny thinks she didn’t care about Mick’s death. Where Drew would think it was because he knew something, Michelle is upset that he thinks a death wouldn’t bother her.

I imagine Thanksgiving was kind of bleak at Casa Santos this year (and next actually). Abuela wasn’t leaving her room. Ray wasn’t back in town yet. Pilar was still at boarding school in Europe. So Thanksgiving would be Carmen fussing at Danny that he hadn’t found Mick’s killer yet, while Dietz looked on. Sounds festive.

Michelle’s plan to tell Danny about “Mr. Shady Character” was about the stupidest one since Phillip came up with the great Don Minyard scheme. Of course it doesn’t work.

A lot of times I’m explaining who somebody is or a particular plot line, I often reference this Thanksgiving 1998 sequence, so watch closely. I’m sure I’ll mention it again. Alan Spauldings is there with Nettie and 2 other Spaulding servants. Ross Marler is there with his boys and India. Ben Warren and Blake Marler are dating. Vanessa and Matt are having issues and Matt is growing closer to Beth who looks on at them kissing jealously. Although Jenna and Michelle are close, right now they are so wrapped up in their own storylines that they have totally different takes on this event. Jenna assumes the kids were taken by her ex-husband Jefferey Morgan (who she was lying to about his having fathered her youngest son Rocky). She had just recently gotten word that Morgan was being released from jail and that’s why she blanches at Drew’s crack about some men not being held by prison. Michelle is so sure it’s Danny, but they don’t have any idea what he’s capable of – yet. Holly is in the midst of the Nursery Stalker story and that’s why she makes the dig about not finding the kids. The woman who makes a crack about the Spaulding money is India Van Holkein who at present was broke and dating Ross, while trying to get some more of what was really her family’s money out of her ex-stepmother Alex.

Irony runs deep in this episode. I think Danny’s thoughts about the kids earlier were all about how much they liked Michelle and how great she was while Michelle was thinking he was capable of hurting them. Then I think Michelle noticed, even though she didn’t react, to how well the girls instantly responded to Danny. Danny saves Lizzie’s life in this episode even though its seldom mentioned again when it should have been, like when Danny asks Phillip for his help with a project or when Lizzie is getting married and she thinks back on how she almost didn’t make it because of the cancer, but she wouldn’t even had a chance to get sick with cancer if Danny hadn’t already saved her. Then Frank is awful to Danny when in just a little over a year, Danny will look at Frank as one of his best (not related by blood or marriage) friends who is almost always one of his first calls when there is trouble. Finally, Marina grows up in just a few years to cause all sorts of problems, not just with Danny, but let’s say there’s a GOOD reason why most Manny fans HATE her.

Beach scene – Danny’s remark about returning to the scene of the crime was so much truer than he knew. He lays out his theory of the crime, which while wrong is SOOO much closer to the truth than the SFPD ever got. This is the first time Michelle references how Danny looks at her and how it makes her feel. “Stop looking at me like you can look right through me.” She later characterizes this that he could look right into her soul. She craves it later, but early on she freaks out about the depth of their instinctive connection, after all Danny was a mobster, a threat, someone no Bauer should be seen with in public (that’s not really true if you look at their family history, but it’s the general public perception) and that NONE of that really mattered when she was with him freaked her out even more. If Mick had lived, he wouldn’t have taken Manny getting together well at all, even without the assault.

The most famous line in this scene is when Danny asks Michelle “Would Jesse kill for you?” Michelle can’t say yes to that, but the feeling is already there in Danny’s voice that Danny would and he eventually does. At the time though the slip, “Jesse didn’t even know what Mick did to me” was more important. Danny’s guesses about what Mick did were so far off given the look of fear on her face that I wonder what would have happened if she’d admitted it to him right then. Danny laughs at Jesse because he thinks Jesse’s every action is providing him with more proof. Then Michelle lies to Jesse. I think that was important to because somewhere in the back of his mind I think Danny thought, oh ho she lied to him to protect me, maybe there is hope there yet.

Christmas 2000

December 25, 2011

Tonight is the last night of the this year’s Christmas posts. I’m sorry I don’t have one more because frankly Christmas 2000 was kind of a downer in Springfield.

First, let’s take the holiday happiness where we can. Frank convinces Buzz (in a simply gorgeous Santa suit) to do Santa pictures in Company. Lizzie is now cancer free! Yes! The truth is out about the plane crash (notice how accommodating Phillip had been since the plane year during Harley in Christmas 1999 because he knew it was coming out. Baby James is Lizzie’s full brother after all since when faced with death Phillip and Beth made love and she got pregnant. Harley and Jim have at least tentatively forgiven their spouses. As even this happy clip shows Harley continues to act “mature” while with Phillip. (I get they were fun, but really I liked Harley as an individual when she was with anybody else, something about them together made her act, well, like this.) Bloss are back together and have been for a year. However, while they live together, Ross has decided the way to keep Blake from cheating again is to not marry her (nope didn’t make any sense to me either). It will be 3 additional Christmases until they actually marry again in Christmas 2003 (See my previous post about that Christmas). (Frankly as Ross’ tipping point was the fact he was running for office again, I’d have told him where to stick it if that’s what it took to get him to the altar again, but Blake didn’t see it that way.) For the most part now all these unpleasant truths are out there, people are dealing with them as best they can and life goes on in Springfield. Beth is still married to Jim, but he’s having to oversee construction of Olivia’s Harbor Project down in San Cristobel as part of his current job so has been away from home for awhile.

December 15, 2000

Beautiful Santa outfit. I really don’t care for this Lizzie. Glad she didn’t last long (but then the bar was set pretty high for Lizzie with other actresses who played her). Bloss are back together & have been since Clarissa’s birth last Xmas. It will be 3 more Xmases before they actually remarry leaving many implausible plot points keeping them single in their wake. Check out Too Manny Santos Xmas 2003 to see their wedding. Blake: “Make sure she doesn’t pull her dress over her head. She thinks it’s the funniest thing in the world right now.” Ross: “Can we break her of that before she starts school or is it genetic and permanent?” Blake: “Go now while your knees still work.” Well, Ross since you mention it, you knew Blake when she was this age & you were grown up, you ought to know. Santa Buzz: “I’m making a list, it’s a big part of my job description.”

OK, everyone looking for happy Christmas stuff stop reading right here.

All right I warned you. There must have been happiness somewhere in Springfield this year, but I have no sign of it. Blake didn’t get married and the two big headlines are Jim dies in a house fire started by a string of faulty Christmas tree lights and Manny are still apart.

Beth and Jim’s House Fire

That is such a great top on Beth and that’s a nice cut on the trousers. The best thing about Edmund was his relationships with Susan and Lizzie. I truly believe he cared for them & would only hurt them if absolutely necessary for his own survival. Beth really wasn’t the woman for Edmund, Cassie really was. Despite the fact I like Beth and don’t like Cassie. Beth was going to have her first truly happy Xmas in years, as perfect as possible, but NO!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WJBaQVXpsk [Part 1]

If Beth could have been happy with anyone other than Phillip, it would have been Jim. I think he really loved her. Jim dies a hero. James Spaulding that last great addition to the cast is named after Jim LeMay who believed for most of Beth’s pregnancy that he was his father. And Xmas is ruined.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohx9gL-PAQo [Part 2]

Really this was pretty darn good pyrotechnics. It looks like an inferno. That’s how the unicorn Edmund gave Lizzie survived. After his “death” in 2009 Lizzie found it in a trunk, the only one to mourn him since apparently Susan remembers absolutely none of it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=090mrO4IaV4 [Part 3]

Jim dies a hero’s death. James lives to romance his “sister” Susan/Daisy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IgHPaVCI_M [Part 4]

Phillip is saving Susan’s life, but she will never forgive Phillip. Susan and Beth truly bonded over Jim’s death, although she’d not really liked Beth before. She felt that Beth understood her loss more than anyone. She would remain closer to Beth than Harley until Brittany Snow left the show. When Daisy returns she seems to remember none of this.

Jim is gone.

Manny Apart with Michelle Pregnant

Manny were busted up mostly because they were recasting ancestresses playing Michelle (Joie Lenz to Nancy St. Alban) and so they wanted Michelle out of town awhile and a chance to have a wedding to flashback to with the current actress (they tend to flashback to weddings a lot with Manny). Michelle came back to town because she was afraid something was wrong with her pregnancy (she had previously miscarried Danny and hers first child) and Danny discovered she was pregnant and had left him to protect the child from the mob. Learning this Danny decided to take Michelle and run as soon as she could travel. Before he could, Carmen (who had faked her death with Claire’s help to keep her away from Michelle) returned from the dead and kidnapped Michelle . Carmen went even further around the bend than usual (she was practically foaming at the mouth) and truly thought Michelle was Selena (although she didn’t know her name) who Miguel has been having an affair with with Carmen arranged his death. Danny was compelled to shoot Carmen to save Michelle and their unborn child (Robbie). Then unwilling to believe the police would treat him fairly, Danny dumped her body in the lake. Racked with guilt, Danny felt the evil in him that let him kill his mother would destroy Michelle and their child and as much as it’s killing them both, Danny feels compelled to keep away. Danny won’t even let Michelle tell him the sex of the baby, but she refuses to give up on him. Finally when Michelle goes into labor, Meta goes and grabs him by the figurative ear and he gives up to the love he has for both of them and returns to her side, but for the moment they’re both apart and in pain. Early in the Manny marriage it was established that Michelle, despite Maureen’s early training and batching it with Rick for years, is not the world’s best cook. Hence Danny’s surprise that Michelle is baking cookies.

Christmas 1997

December 22, 2011

Today we flashback to Guiding Light 1997. Buzz who developed amnesia after confronting Nola for stalking him at the Bauer cabin. Harley found him and brought him back to Springfield, but Jenna didn’t feel like she could tell him the baby was really Jeffery’s (from when she slept with him to save Buzz’s life). Buzz overheard Harley talking about it at the Dart almost wedding and took off. The Coopers don’t know where he is. Michelle was blinded in the fire at Reva’s house. She doesn’t want Jesse to know that she is blind so he won’t feel obligated to give up his dreams to take care of her.

Dart are still together, but will soon break up over Cassie. The entire Lewis family was left homeless when Roy Meecham’s friend burned down her house. They were living in a hotel.

Peter Simon had left the show and they decided to bring back this guy who’d played Ed in the 1960s. It was a nice idea, but really he never jelled much in the part and he wasn’t on very much or very long. At the time Jason was thought to be Rick’s son, but it turns out Annie had screwed with the paternity test for revenge on Blake and both twins are Ross’. (And before you ask, yes a woman really can give birth to twins by two different fathers).

I’m glad to compare this episode to the Christmas 1984 episode I did earlier this week. I knew until Manny spun them off in another direction, they were trying for a 4 Musketeer redux with Michelle as good girl Beth, Drew as schemer Mindy, Jesse as troubled with family problems Phillip, and Bill as good guy Rick, but I hadn’t realized they were already using carbon paper for the blind school story too.

Christmas Episode 1

Now Harley can’t find Buzz. Are we sure she’s a detective? “He didn’t ever turn up at Nola’s.” Harley you feel like it’s your fault because at least 75% of it is. Come on Vanessa, you know Blake was faking. Cassie should burn those jeans, they do NOT fit right. This would have been another great chance for Vanessa to explain to Dinah what she used to do and how she’s really concerned Dinah is making the same kind of mistakes she did, not judging her even though it comes across that way. Hart really was a tool. If he had married you Cassie he’d been in a triangle w/ someone else w/i a couple of months.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J31Brm1HnXg&feature=plcp&context=C39a0678UAOEgsToPDskIKVyeHi-meM9NWaxBsRWzB [Part 1]

Buzz is back to his own self one way. He always runs when he’s in trouble. Hart is making everybody miserable. I never did like him, though I wanted Dinah to have him since for some unaccountable reason she wanted him.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWk-QovoIZ4 [Part 2]

Good for you Beth. Keep Phillip in line. Um, Phillip, you are the one who left AZ, Lizzie and Beth. Eventually Annie is right. Harley is the odd one out. Jesse is even more of an idiot than normal right here. Do you know Mannyacs called him The Walking Vegetable or TWV? Fits don’t you think. Poor Dinah. This really stinks!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHU7O-PuyvQ [Part 3]

Hart felt pressure from what Vanessa said, but somewhere in there he still loves Dinah. I can’t believe Harley thinks that Phillip should choose her over Lizzie. Best case for Harley, Lizzie (the child) has to spend Xmas eve away from her family & home so Harley can spend it with her boyfriend. Yeah, real mature Harley. Just because you’re wearing a child’s length skirt doesn’t make you one. I can’t believe Jenna thanked her. It’s due to Harley’s big mouth that the secret came out like it did. 4:30 I think this line “I never want to go back to what I used to be” is a defining line and explains his holding on to Messe even though his heart is clearly with Drew for the next year.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llxGI2yiz2w [Part 4]

Hart maybe you should have said you didn’t want to go before you RSVP-ed. The sad thing is Hart was just as “in love” with Dinah and Julie before her. I think he’d have eventually dumped Cassie, too. If he had lived. I love the cast Xmas greeting.

Christmas Episode 2

Nice Chanukah reference in passing. You’d think this baby would be the start of a story, but after he turns Buzz around he disappears. So Rebecca Budig subscribes to the half closed eyes slightly slumped forward school of acting blind as championed in Melissa Sue Anderson’s early work. I like that they are suspicious w/ everything that’s happened recently, but really it’s just a red herring. In the long view Annie was right about 1 out of 2. Nice block move Annie. I hate Annie’s dress.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDBkX_D1fcw [Part 1]

I really love the Firehouse set. You might think it avoided the compulsory Springfield fireplace, but it’s upstairs in the Jezz bedroom. It was great when it was Billy & Vanessa’s house, so it was fitting it be returned to the Lewis family. This really was great of Vanessa and I think a sign she still thought of them as family. Glad they said Josh bought the stuff. I really hate Cassie’s jeans. They need to burn them. They make her so hippy. Cassie’s hair looks good for once. Annie is living w/ Alan & building up to their almost wedding.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9VbDzQTTDU [Part 2]

Annie dress is too short, too low cut, and too tight. I thought Annie was waiting for a ring when she couldn’t believe it was so BIG. That was funny when Annie had to rip the ring back off her finger. I like Dinah’s dress. Coop is darling. What Marina wants from you Harley is for you not to steal her fiance in a few years. That’s a pretty trusting priest, to leave a baby with a stranger. Is this supposed to be St. Micheal’s? (Rewatching I think it’s suppose to be Chicago.) I really love the flower arrangements. I’d say they were more summer than Christmas, but they’re gorgeous. I really like Beth’s dress too. Beth does a great updo. I wonder if Beth does it herself or if Nettie or someone does it. NO WAY that costume would fit Buzz. Look at Baby Coop! – Take defensive driving classes kids. “Give him a switch I’d use it on him later. Love Eleni’s vest too. Nice cut between Grown Beth & Baby Coop [Chortle]. The cameo with Sarah’s photo was the clue that led to them tracking down Cassie. Apparently the prop department kept it throughout the run. It was offered on the CBS GL website as a prize in last weeks of the show. I don’t know who go it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxmeHRwKHE0 [Part 3]

What’s your problem Hart? You wanted Dinah to take an interest in Peter and when she finally does you dump her. I don’t think it was over. Hart is just twitterpated with Cassie. When Dart was good, it was really, really good. But to be honest Hart is a Tom Cat. He wouldn’t have stayed with Cassie either. I’d really have rather seen both ladies dump him than fight over him. Beth always did support Phillip’s writing. She gives him a blank book as the series ends and asks him to write again. Beth should have been this honest when she first came back.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yulYBeip9oA [Part 4]

Tammy is annoying.Cassie is still wearing those jeans she ought to burn. Ironically Harley and Beth agree on wanting Phillip away from Spaulding and working as a writer. I love Jenna’s face when Buzz 1st speaks. I like it when Ross gets to do the Xmas story.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDXPpvyQBjM [Part 5]

I started out with what I didn’t realize it was partial episode. So I went back and found it on Heartbreaker’s channel. I’m leaving in the partial version anyway.

I really loved the Firehouse set. I loved Jezz too. And what happened to Marina? She was so great as a little girl and she grew up to be such a witch. I loved the close connection between Michelle and Rick. I hated Messe. All I can think watching it now, is “hold on Michelle, next Xmas will be with Danny.” I had forgotten Lujack got a job at the blind school, I didn’t realize they were doing the story over w/ Messe. I liked Vanessa giving the Lewis family the house. Beth does look lovely. Nice block by Annie so Phillip has to help Beth. Pharley was playful and fun, but it wasn’t near as real as either Billip or GusH or Harlett. And Pharley totally destroyed Harley’s character she does one awful thing after another while they’re together. As much as I have reasons not to like Gus (tried to destroy Danny), Harley did start acting like Harley again when she was with him.

It was great when it was Billy & Vanessa’s house, so it was fitting it be returned to the Lewis family. This really was great of Vanessa and I think a sign she still thought of them as family.
