Making Bauer Burgers

I first came across the “real” recipe for Bauer BBQ when I put together a Bauer BBQ party. I found it in a now gone post at Soap Central. Last year Michael O’Leary (Rick Bauer) made it on the talk show Delmarva Life while they were talking about Breathing Under Dirt. The recipes were identical. I haven’t been able to find exactly where it came from. In addition, I made some additional notes on the recipe based on what O’Leary did and our own experiences trying the recipe.

Watch O’Leary make Bauer Burgers:

“Rachel Ray and Emeril have nothing on me.”

Bauer Burgers Recipe

You’ve seen the famous Bauer Burgers on Guiding Light for many years — but now you can have a taste of the famous food in your very own home.

  • 2 lbs Ground Sirloin
  • 2 teaspoons (approximately) Chopped Garlic
  • Pepper, and Salt to taste
  • 3 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • Grilled Portobello Mushrooms
  • Chopped or Thinly Sliced Red Onion
  • American or Mozerello Cheese – 1 slice per patty
  • Hamburger Bun for Each Complete Burger

1. Mix ground sirloin, garlic, salt, pepper, and Worcestershine sauce.

2. Make an even number of thin hamburger patties. (Be sure to make them very thin.) I used a #8 dipper and flattened them out. They should have made them a little smaller. I got four burgers from 2 pounds of meat.

3. Chop up some onion and put it on top of the first patty. Then put a slice of American or mozzarella cheese on top. Grill some mushrooms and put them on top of the cheese. Cover the whole thing with another patty.

4. Using a fork, press down the edges of the patties so they are sealed.

5. Barbecue the double patties over a low flame until done. It takes more time to cook due to the thickness of the patties.  I used no stick aluminum foil on the grill.
