Once In A Lifetime by France Chapter 4

Republisher’s Note: Sorry this one is out of order.

Author’s Note: Sorry, I took this long to post a new chapter. School got in the way. Hopefully the next chapter won’t take this long.

Once In A Lifetime by France Chapter 4

The ice rink was chilly and Michelle felt tired. Nationals were only two days away which meant she was being tutored full time and spent every second of the day at the rink, getting there at 7 each morning and not leaving until 8 at night. As she circled the ice waiting for her music to begin, she couldn’t help but think about Danny. Lately she thought about Danny a lot, she wondered what he was doing, what he was thinking, what was he wearing. Two weeks ago at her thirteenth birthday party Danny gave her a skating boot pendant, which she wore on a necklace her mother gave her. She fingered the pendant as she continued skating in circles. Since the day of her party she had only seen him once. With her schedule the only people she saw were Coach Nicks, her club mates, and her parents.

“Okay Michelle, we are going to run through your entire short program, pretend this is Nationals if you fall just keep skating okay?” Coach Nicks instructed. Michelle nodded and got into her opening pose, the music began and she floated across the ice spinning and jumping, landing every element perfectly. When the music ended she struck her ending pose and then looked to the bleachers and bowed like her choreographer Katya had instructed. Her face broke into a wide smile when she saw Danny sitting there clapping, she flashed him a shy smile as she skated over to Coach Nicks for instructions on what she needed to improve.

“That was perfect Michelle, just awesome,” herĀ coach beamed. “You have an hour for lunch and then it’s back on the ice for a run through of your long program, only fruit for dessert today okay?”

“Got it apple instead of apple pie,” she reassured him.

She took her skates off, grabbed her lunch and joined Danny on the bleachers.

“Hey stranger,” he greeted

“Looks like you are ready to win that gold medal,” he praised.

“Yeah well, you haven’t seen the competition.”

“What are you doing here anyway?” she asked digging into her lunch of steamed vegetables, rice and tofu.

“Word on the street is that you live here now,” he teased

Michelle smiled, but the smile didn’t quite reach her eyes.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing really, it’s just that I do miss hanging out with Pilar and those guys…. even you,” she smiled

“Well, Nationals is in two days, then you can go back to being here for 8 hours instead of 24 right?”

“Not, if I make the world team. If I make it then I have to do this for 3 more weeks.”

“Do you ever wonder if this is all worth it?”

“Not usually.”

They sat in silence as Michelle finished her food, and began eating her apple.

“May I have a bite?” Danny asked.

She handed him the apple and he bit off half of the fruit and handed the other half to her grinning.

“You’re such a pig, Danny Santos” she laughed

“But you like me that way,” he replied

“Yes I do,” she smiled

“I like you too. Michelle Bauer” he said seriously.

Danny reached over and held her hand in his both focused on each other, neither wanting the moment to end.

“Michelle, you are on the ice in 5 minutes, lace up your skates,” Coach Nicks interrupted from on the ice. Michelle smiled nervously and stood up. Danny let her hand slowly slide from his.

“Are you going to stay and watch?” she asked quietly

“Do you want me to? If you want me to I will.”

“If you want to you can.”

They both laughed at the ridiculous exchange.

“I’ll stay” Danny laughed.
