Character Assassination

Every Friday night I try to post another term of Soap Opera Jargon. Find more on the soap opera jargon page.

Character Assassination – Although there is a lot of murder on soap operas, character assassination doesn’t have anything to do with literal death. When you invite characters into your home for years and years, you learn their history, their characteristics, what they are or are not likely to do. You follow Douglas Marland’s tenant: “Don’t change a core character. You can certainly give them edges they didn’t have before, or give them a logical reason to change their behavior. But when the audience says, “He would never do that,” then you have failed.” Character assassination is when you do the opposite, when history and personality are sacrificed to advance plot or the fancy of a new team of writers. Sometimes it’s not the action itself, but the way or the reason a character does something. However, when the character is forced to do something they wouldn’t do, normally something terrible or stupid, it’s character assassination.
