Something About You – Part 48 by ShellyLynn

“You don’t have to remind me,” Michelle said, jerking her arm free from Bill’s grasp. “I am well aware of your threats and what you intend to do if I don’t go through with this godforsaken ceremony. I may hate you, but make no mistake, I will do whatever it takes to ensure the safety of the people I love.”

“As long as we’re clear,” he answered, seemingly satisfied with her frustrated answer.

“As for that,” she said, pointing back into the room, “I wasn’t faking. I would much rather just get tonight over with so I can get away from you,” she said, enjoying the angry look that came over his face. “I just haven’t been feeling well. I think being near you makes me sick.”

“You’ll have to do a hell of a lot more than be near me tomorrow,” he said, his eyes scanning her body so as not to leave any doubt what he was referring to.

“You can look all you want,” she said, noticing his directed stare, “But might I suggest a cold shower instead?” When his eyes looked back at hers she half laughed at his Neanderthal like appearance, “You need to start getting used to it dear, because it will be a cold day in hell before I will even think about sleeping with you.” She ran her finger along his jaw, enjoying the sudden power she seemed to have over him. “I’m going to go downstairs now, I wouldn’t want to keep the guests waiting.”

She turned her back and headed toward the party, hoping that before long Danny and Ross would show up. If it were up to her, that would be the last conversation she would have with Bill Lewis.

When she arrived, the party was in full swing. There were guests milling about in seemingly every corner of the house and there was more than enough champagne flowing freely and glasses seemed to fill each and every one of the guests’ hands.

She walked around the room, talking with old family acquaintances she hadn’t seen in a while, hoping that keeping herself busy would make the time go faster.

It was nearly an hour later when she finally spotted Bill across the room as she talked with one of her father’s old friends. She assumed that he had arrived earlier, but knowing that she surely wasn’t eager to talk to him and not wishing to make a scene, he kept his distance. When she did notice his appearance, she was glad to find that he wasn’t in any hurry to assume the role of doting fiancee, instead hanging out by the dessert table and talking business with some of his colleagues.

She went through a methodical search of the room with her eyes, praying that at any moment, she would lock eyes with one of the men she was anxious to see, the men that were not only serving as her would be saviors, but as the most important men in her life.

She walked by the drink table and picked up a glass of champagne. Lifting it to her mouth, her stomach suddenly churned at the normally pleasant aroma. “I guess I won’t be drinking tonight either,” she said, making her way toward the bathroom to splash some water on her face.

“Would Miss Bauer come up here,” she heard spoken into the microphone from the small stage at the other end of the room that the band was seated on. “I’d like to make a toast to the happy couple.”

She looked straight ahead at the door to the bathroom and her mind contemplated pretending she never heard her name. It would have been so easy to continue through the door and lock it behind her until Danny showed up, but before she made her choice, her would be father-in-law grabbed her by hand. “Would you do me the pleasure of escorting my beautiful soon to be daughter-in-law?”

She nodded her head feebly, looking around her in near desperation as she was escorted through the mass of people toward the stage. “Here comes the beautiful lady now,” Bill’s friend announced as they approached.

“Bill,” he began, holding out his champagne in front of him, “We’ve been friends for a long time, but when you told me you were marrying Michelle Bauer, I have to admit I didn’t believe you…”

A few laughs came from the crowd as he continued. “I mean, all of us guys had a crush on her at one time or another and we even took bets on who would be the first one to kiss her, but no offense Bill, we never expected it to be you. In fact, we,” he said, gesturing to the guys standing near the front of the crowd, “thought you must have bribed her or something. ”

A huge round of laughter exploded from the crowd as Michelle nearly choked. The smile Bill had plastered on his face fell for an instant but he quickly regained his composure, “Sorry guys, Michelle was more than willing to marry me. When you love someone as much as we love each other,” he said, reaching out and pulling her close, “you want nothing more than to spend the rest of your lives together…”

An awwww arose from the crowd as his seemingly sentimental speech, “but there is one more thing that could make our lives even better…”

The crowd hushed as they waited for him to finish his sentence and Michelle wondered right along with them. She had no idea where he was going with this, but she was sure she wouldn’t like it.

“Michelle and I both love children,” he continued and she pulled away from him. If he was going to announce that they would be seeking custody of Mikey she was out of there, “and we would both like to have a large family which is why what I am about to say is fabulous news.”

He paused as he waited for everyone to get sufficiently excited about his next words, “My bride and I are going to have a baby,” he announced. “The doctor just called to confirm it.”

Michelle felt like she was stuck in some bad movie and she couldn’t remember her lines. She looked around at the faces of the people she knew and felt like everything was in slow motion as her world started to spin. “

“I’m going to be a daddy….” was the last thing her ears picked up as her mind went black and she fell towards the floor.

Mr. Lewis reached out and caught Michelle as she fell, the crowd drawing a collective gasp as her body neared the floor. “Woah,” he said, easily lifting her body into his arms, “I don’t think she took the good news very well.”

Bill watched as his father carried her through the mass of onlookers to the next room, “I guess she was so excited she couldn’t bear it,” he told the crowd with a shaky laugh. “I’m sure she’ll be fine, but please excuse me.”

He followed the same path his father had taken to the office across the hallway where he found Michelle laying on the leather couch, still not moving a muscle. “This had better not be a stunt,” Bill stormed as he paced the room.

“What are you talking about?” Mr. Lewis asked, watching his son’s anger filled movements from his place at Michelle’s side.

“This is not the way I wanted tonight to be,” Bill said, his voice louder than originally intended. “I mean, tonight was supposed to be a happy occasion. There are dozens of clients and potential clients out there watching her make a fool out of me…”

“I think you should be more worried about your fiancee’s health right now than how that looked. I take it she didn’t know what you were about to announce?” When he got no response from his son he continued. “Don’t you think you should have discussed this with her before proclaiming it to hundreds of people?”

Before Bill could answer his mother walked in with the doctor, “Please tell me she’s going to be okay,” she said, reaching for her husband as he stood to allow the doctor to have a place at Michelle’s side.

She opened her eyes and started to softly cry, “this can’t be happening, no, no…” she said, her eyes wild with fear, “Get away from me…” she said when Bill attempted to calm her down. The doctor quickly pulled a needle out of his bag and gave her a light sedative to calm her down. “She should sleep for a few hours but then I suggest that you make every effort to make sure she gets some more rest and sees an OB.”

“Is she okay?” Vanessa asked, him, her eyes wet with the beginnings of tears, “And the baby?”

“They should be just fine,” the doctor answered as he took her pulse and checked her eyes “but in her condition she needs to eat much better than she has been and she needs lots of rest. You might even want to consider moving the wedding back. I know it’s supposed to be a happy occasion, but it’s also stressful and she can’t handle any type of stress right now. This pregnancy is already at a risk because of her low weight…”

“NO,” Bill said firmly, stopping the physician in mid sentence. “We are not moving the wedding. It will go on tomorrow as planned.”

“Son,” Mr. Lewis said, trying to be the voice of reason, “If Rich thinks it would be better for her and the baby…”

“I said no,” he steamed. “Nothing is going to change. The wedding will take place as scheduled. I’m not going to put this off a minute longer. In just over sixteen hours, she will be my wife.”

Mr. Lewis turned his head and looked at his wife, letting her know that he wanted a few words alone with his son.

“I think I’ll go tell the guests that she’s okay,” Vanessa said, taking his cue and leaving the room.

Mr. Lewis escorted his son to the other side of the room while the doctor finished checking Michelle out and made it clear that Bill’s actions were unacceptable to him. “I’m sorry,” Bill apologized, feigning self-loathing at his behavior. “Why don’t you just give me some time alone with her to make up for it. You can go back to the party and do damage control, I’ll worry about making sure she has everything she needs.”

Satisfied that his son had seen the error of his ways, he left the room, taking the doctor with him. Bill moved to her side, angrily waiting for her to wake up. She had tried to make a fool out of him by letting Santos get her pregnant, but as soon as she woke up he intended to make sure that she was aware that no one, Danny Santos included was ever going to know the true paternity of the child she was carrying.

A loud knock on the door startled him, but as soon as he heard the voice on the other side, he quickly devised a plan. Seeing Michelle laying under the covers on the couch, he quickly divested himself of his shirt and climbed in with her, pulling her sleeping body into his arms. “Damn it, Michelle? Michelle, if you’re in there…” Finally the door opened and the man entered, “What the hell?”

“Excuse me,” Bill said, pulling the covers further up to cover the rest of his body, “We’re a little busy here,” he said, throwing his feet over the edge of the sofa and retrieving his shirt, “Could you please give me a little privacy here?” he asked, hoping that Danny would leave the room so he could hide the fact that not only was he still dressed from the waist down, but that Michelle was oblivious to what was going on.

“NO, I want you to get the hell away from her,” Danny said, moving into the room and towards them.

“I said get out!”

“What’s going on here?” Mr. Lewis said, entering the room upon hearing the shouting. “Miss Bauer needs her rest.”

“What she needs is for him to get away from her,” Danny replied, his anger growing with every second that Bill was near her.

“My son is taking care of her and their baby,” Mr. Lewis said, standing between them.

“Their what?” Danny asked, his throat constricting from merely thinking about the words. “That’s not possible…”

“I know it’s not exactly the best timing in the world, but they do love each other and they are getting married tomorrow…”

“The hell they are…” Danny said, moving towards the couch once again.

“My son loves her and he is going to be a good husband and father. What right do you have to condemn them?”

“Well, aside from knowing that your son doesn’t deserve to breathe the same air as that amazing woman, my main right comes from the fact that I’m her husband.”

“What? That’s not possible,” Bill shouted, forgetting his plan and standing from the sofa in anger.

“You didn’t really think you’d get away with this did you?,” Danny laughed.

“You’re such a sorry excuse for a human being that you couldn’t even blackmail her into marrying you, but it’s a moot point anyway, because she’s already married, to me.”
