Something About You – Part 37 by ShellyLynn

Danny sat in his final class of the day unable to wrap his mind around the teacher’s lecture on the significance of Early American Poetry. Actually, if he was honest with himself, he couldn’t think about anything but Michelle. He had to find a way to get her to listen to him, no matter course of action it required. He would use any opportunity he found to make her see what she was doing was the wrong thing for both of them.

“Umm, excuse me,” a voice said from the suddenly open doorway, halting the class for a moment. “I’m sorry to interrupt but I need to speak to Mr. Daniel Santos.”

The faces around the room began searching for the man behind the name, nodding their heads in realization as he stood from his seat and after grabbing his bag, walked toward the doorway.

“Mr. Santos,” the older, slightly frail looking woman said as they closed the door behind them and class resumed with them in the hallway. “I’m afraid I have some bad news. Your son Michael has been taken to the hospital and they need you to come there immediately.”

Danny felt like his world was going to collapse from underneath him. “What?” was all his shaky voice could manage. “How?”

“I guess there was some sort of accident on the playground, I wasn’t given many details, except that it was important for you to come now,” her face relayed her sympathy as she told him what little she knew. She was sure that the lack of solid information would make things even harder for him to deal with.

He didn’t wait for her to say another word before taking off down the hallway, sprinting toward the exit in his haste to get to the hospital and find Mikey. He had already lost so much in his life and now, he was afraid he was losing the last person he had left.

He arrived at the hospital ten minutes later, frantically making his way to the front desk to inquire about his nephew’s whereabouts. “Michael is in with Dr. Luciano,” the nurse said, he should be out to talk to you in a few minutes.

“Where is he at?” Danny asked, his nerves beyond frazzled. A stray thought ran through his head wondering if this was what it was like to have a nervous breakdown.

“The doctor will be right with you…”

“I don’t care. Where is my nephew? What room is he in?” he demanded, his voice almost menacing as frustration joined his panic.

“He’s in exam room number 111b,” she divulged, not wanting to be on the bad side of the man before her. She had a feeling that wasn’t a good place to be.

He took off in the direction he knew the room to be in, almost taking out a man in a wheelchair as he rounded the corner. Turning to apologize to the man he ran smack into someone else, sending the person backward against the wall.

“Michelle?”

“Danny,” she responded in surprise, straitening herself up as she spoke.

“Are you okay? What are you doing here?” he asked, concern for her well being mixing with the confusion he felt as to why she was at the hospital. Had something happened to her as well?

“I was about to ask you the same thing? Is Mikey okay?” her worry filled voice questioned. “What’s wrong?” she could read him like a book and she was sure that something had happened to the darling boy. It was the only thing she knew of that could make him so upset.

Other than the love of his life abandoning him her inner voice reminded her but she shut it out and attempted to concentrate on the conversation. Mikey’s health was the important thing at the moment.

“I’m trying to find out,” he told her, his voice shaking from all the thoughts running rampant through his head. “They called from school and told me Mikey had been brought here.”

“You haven’t heard anything yet?” she asked, her own worries consuming her.

“No, I was just coming to see what I can find out. They said the doctor should be out soon,” Danny informed her, looking at the closed door before him that held behind it his answers.

“Who is it?”

“Huh? Oh, I think his name was Luciano,” Danny recovered, his mind still contemplating what was going on behind the nearby door.

“He’s in good hands then, Luciano is one of the best doctors in the country,” she said, leaning forward and engaging him in a supportive hug.

His arms wrapped around her body naturally and she automatically laid her head against his chest. Their breathing synchronized and for that moment in time, it seemed as if nothing had changed. The emergence of the doctor from Mikey’s room broke their moment however and Michelle immediately stepped away, berating herself inwardly for her weakness.

“Are you Mr. Santos?” the doctor asked.

When Danny nodded his head in the affirmative, the man continued. “Your nephew is doing fine. He was unconscious for a couple of minutes so we had to run some extra tests, but it appears there was no real damage. He just has a few stitches for a cut above his left eye.”

“What happened to him?” Michelle gasped, the thought of the boy she adored lying unconscious attacking her and bringing tears to her eyes.

The doctor looked at her strangely, not knowing how she was connected to any of this, but answered her anyway. “I was told that he was swinging from his legs on the monkey bars, he slid off accidentally and fell to the ground. It’s actually a fairly common type of occurrence for children his age. We took precautionary tests and they have all came back negative. It looks like he’ll be free to go home in about an hour.”

“Thank God,” Michelle said, finally exhaling the breath she’d been holding since the doctor first arrived in the hallway. “Can we see him?”

“Sure, no problem, we just have one set of results left to come back. If you have any questions, have the desk page me. I’ll be back to check on him in a little while and then I’ll release him,” the doctor said, leaving them alone. “He’s sleeping right now. The stitches are very close to his eye and he wouldn’t sit still so we had to calm him down to put them in.”

The silence that ensued seemed to be swallowing them whole. Neither of them knew what to say or what to do. Both of them had so many things that they wanted to tell the other, but for their own reasons, held back.

“I guess we better go check on him. He was probably terrified. You know how he hates hospitals,” Danny said, avoiding the subject he wanted to discuss most. “I’m sure he’ll be happy to see you when he wakes up.”

They walked into the room and found the little boy sleeping on the small bed.

“I’ve missed him,” she whispered, almost to herself but just loud enough that Danny heard her.

‘You didn’t have to miss him. You left us, remember,” his anger began to slip back to the surface.

“You don’t understand. I didn’t have a choice. I never wanted to leave either of you. It’s just so complicated…” she said, taking her eyes off Mikey and turning towards him.

“It didn’t have to be. I love you and I thought you loved us. Was I wrong? Was it all just some big game to you, a joke? Ha Ha, I guess you got us…” he said, his emotions beginning to get to him now that he knew Mikey would be all right.

“It wasn’t like that,” she said, her body reacting to the sight of him in pain. She wanted nothing more than to throw herself into his arms and take the pain away, but she couldn’t.

“Then what was it like? Do tell,” he said sarcastically, raising his voice.

“Shh… I don’t want him to wake up and find us arguing. That won’t help anyone…” she said, hoping to calm him down.

“Fine,” he said, grabbing her by the arm and leading her out the door and down the hallway. When he stopped, she looked at he door in front of her as he turned the handle and led her inside.

“What are we doing in the janitor’s closet?” she asked as she watched him turn the knob to lock the door from the inside. “Let me out.”

“I think I deserve to know what is going on. What’s the real reason why you are marrying Bill Lewis?” Danny said, crossing his arms determinedly and standing in front of the door.

“Come on Danny,” she said, looking at him like he was losing his mind.

“You have managed to avoid facing me for a week, but now I have your attention and we are going to stay in here until you tell me the truth.”
