Something About You – Part 33 by ShellyLynn

Danny ran to his car and climbed in, the tears cascading down his face faster than he could wipe them away. Why was this happening to them, why was she doing this? He thought back to her words just a few minutes earlier, “It’s true.”

He had expected her to refute what Bill had so smugly said, he’d expected her to run into his arms and tell him that it was all a bad joke or a terrible lie. He’d expected her to say just about anything except what she had. “It’s true,” his head repeated over and over, unable to get the two syllables out of his mind. It couldn’t be true, his heart simply wouldn’t believe it.

How could she do this? How could she throw everything they had together away? She loved him, he was sure of that. After the way she looked at him the previous night, after the way she made love to him, after the way she whispered in his ear that she loved him and would until the day she died, how could she take it all back?

She couldn’t.

That was his answer, because he wouldn’t let her. He would make her see what a terrible mistake she was making and then he would win her back. He wasn’t about to let her go without a fight, that was for sure. He had promised her mother that he loved her too much to let her go and he never broke promises, especially ones that meant as much to him as his own life. He couldn’t live without her anymore than he could breathe without air. In the short time that they had been together, she had become a part of him, the other half he’d always dreamed about but doubted he’d ever find. She belonged with him and he had two weeks, fourteen days to make her see that.

He pulled his car away and drove around town, knowing that he had a babysitter for at least two more hours, he stopped at the park and began to walk, ending up at the bench where they first talked. It seemed like years ago that they met, that he fell in love with her. It was so easy, it snuck up on him. She was beautiful and smart, kind and caring, everything he wanted in a woman, and she wanted him. It was almost unfathomable, how something so wonderful could happen so quickly and then disappear just as fast.

He takes the ring out of his pocket, holding it up and letting the moonlight bounce off of its cut edges. “I know she loves me and someday, she’ll see that we belong together. It’s only a matter of time before you are on her finger where you belong.”

“Now,” he thought to himself, “I have to figure out what is going on with her.” There had to be some reason for her sudden change. The more he thought about it, the more he was sure that something happened to cause her drastic turnaround and the more he became convinced that it came in the form of Bill Lewis.

He stood up and began walking back to his car. There was one person he could count on to tell him the truth about Lewis and answer some other questions for him, Mrs. Bauer. He only hoped he could wait until morning to see her.

Michelle made her way back to her apartment, her red eyes burning and in dire need of sleep that she was sure would not come. How could it? How could she bear to close her eyes when all she could see was the look on Danny’s face when he saw her with Bill? How could she live with herself after what she did to him?

“He still has Mikey,” the voice in the back of her head reasoned, “He’s better off this way.”

She walked into her room and turned on the light, her eyes immediately moving to the bed. The same bed where one night before they had made love. It was perfect and beautiful, something that no matter how long she lived, she would carry with her for the rest of her life.

She walked over and sat down, bringing the pillow where he slept up to her face and breathing in his lingering scent. If she closed her eyes, she could remember exactly how he felt, how he breathed and smelled as he made love to her. It brought a sad smile to her face, only to be replaced by a look of sadness when once again his face at the lighthouse popped into her head.

“I’m so sorry,” she cried, reaching across to her nightstand and grabbing the teddy bear he won for her weeks earlier at the fair. “I never wanted to hurt you. Please forgive me…”

She curled up into a ball on top of her comforter, holding the stuffed animal as tightly as she could, as if she were afraid he too would be ripped from her grasp. “I do love you. I always will.”

“You know, you could have told me the truth a long time ago,” a man said, sitting at his love’s bedside. “I would have found a way for us to be together.”

“I wish I would have been strong enough to fight for that,” she smiled slightly, “It would have made all of our lives so much better.”

“You had no way of knowing how things would turn out,” he said, “I understand why you did it, I do, I’m just sorry that both of us missed so much time we could have spent together.”

“That’s in the past now,” she coughed, her chest constricting in pain, “Right now, we need to make sure that Michelle doesn’t suffer the same pain we have been through, and enjoy what time we have left.”

“I don’t know how I’ll live without you,” he said, placing a soft kiss on her hand as he held it to his heart, silent tears running down his cheeks.

“You’ll remember what we have together and what magic we were able to create despite the circumstances,” she tells him, squeezing his hand. “You still have so much left to do, to make right, for both of us. Promise me you’ll do that.”

“I promise,” he said, standing up. “I guess I better get home, there’s a lot of work to do.”

“Thank you,” she whispered as he walked away from her, not only to the man she loved, but to the heavens above. “Take care of my baby girl.”
