Paraphrase I Killed Maureen Reardon Bauer

Michael Logan recently interviewed the current TPTB on The Young and the Restless, Jill Farren Phelps and Chuck Pratt. Although they have written some good things in their disparate soap careers, they are individually considered soap killers by many fans, especially Pratt’s work on All My Children (AMC) that was called out by Susan Lucci (Erica Kane) in her book – get the paperback version for the extra chapter on the end of AMC. Phelps is especially known for hiring and heavily favoring in the writing personal pets and friends. This is such common practice in the soap world that Phelps being called out on it, her actions must be AMAZINGLY bad. They both have a fast held opinion that criticism coming from fans, especially coming from online, is emotionally based and should be regarded as ignorant.

The question that jumped out at me was the one about Maureen Bauer (Michelle’s mom):

Like when you killed off Maureen Bauer on Guiding Light?
Phelps: I will always be the woman who killed Maureen Bauer. And I should be blamed for it. It was the wrong thing to do and it was a very public lesson for me. I never did that sort of thing again. I did not, however, kill Frankie Frame when I was producing Another World. I will not take the blame for that.

This was such a mind numbingly stupid decision that over 20 years later it’s still being referenced relatively frequently. However, it did function as a platform that helped bond an entire generation of characters. Although Maureen was a wonderful character, I think part of why is that they never refilled that position of solid center who connected the show. Michelle was poised to take over that position once she grew up, but they always shoved her off into a side story instead. The closest as they got was in the final year of the show when Dinah Marler became that kind of plotline center, although she could never be described as solid. One day in 2009 I suddenly sat up while watching and said, “Dinah Marler has become the heart of the show, how in the world did that happen?” In any case, I agree killing Maureen was a mistake only slightly rectified by later plot and her ghostly visitations.
