Dual Vision

Every Friday I post a term of soap opera jargon. Find more on the Soap Opera Jargon page.

Dual Vision – This is another term that isn’t used precisely, but the concept is one that is pervasive in soap opera fandom. Soap operas can act as a kind of Rorschach (aka Ink blot) test. Two fans can watch the same exact scene and get a totally different set of facts out of it. (See Fan Wars) These often have to do with Tunnel Vision fans have for a couple or a character (see Tunnel Vision). In an example, on Guiding Light some fans enjoyed Rebecca Budig’s portrayal of Michelle as sweet and innocent and were upset when she left where others found her performance hollow and vapid and lacking any Michelle fire. Although it sometimes holds through for a single character, dual vision is often expressed the loudest over triangles. For example lets take the case of Dinah-Hart-Cassie on Guiding Light. While many people very much enjoyed the bond between Dinah and Hart (which spilled over to real life and they are still married) and were horrified when a bottle blond, abrasive, stripper made a move on Hart and he fell for it (temporarily), other fans saw Hart finally find a woman with similar values and goals who helped him shake off his previous poisonous relationship  with Dinah and let him dream of a new life. In another instance, when Jack married Janet on As The World Turns some fans saw Jack finally moving on with a mature, healthy relationship while others heard the scene with Carly where he basically said the only thing he was seeking with Janet was stability and he still loved Carly (seriously look for the scene I’m only paraphrasing he said all that). Only one of all these things happened on screen, but you couldn’t prove it by the fans. It’s seriously as if they’d watched two separate shows.

Robansuefarm is the handle of one of Manny and Guiding Light‘s biggest fans following in her family’s footsteps of Guiding Light fandom since 1939. This blog is an effort to make it easy to find Guiding Light and especially Manny online. Check back here for her blog, find fanfic previews and fake WSPR newscasts on her YouTube, find podcasts that look back to old shows and audios of her fanfics on Blog Talk Radio, and finally follow her on Twitter and Facebook.
