Loving Michelle by Carla Chapter 2

Republisher’s Note: Michelle has just announced her divorce from Danny wasn’t legal.

Loving Michelle by Carla – Chapter 2

The wedding was turning into a circus now. Carmen had made her way to the back demanding an explanation. Amelia was in tears and the two flower girls, Alanie and Alissa, the bride’s nieces and the only people in the room besides Michelle that he gave a damn about, were picking up the flowers and redepositing them back onto the carpet as they had done before.

Danny couldn’t believe what was happening. Michelle had dropped a huge bomb. He needed to find out more information but he couldn’t get a word in edgewise with all the commotion.

Carmen spotted Michelle and said “What is she doing here Daniel. Get rid of her right now!”

“Danny, what is wrong?” Amelia said. She was crying but no tears were forming and her makeup wasn’t getting smeared a bit. She looked like a wax statue to Michelle. Cool and elegant. Just the kind of woman Danny had always associated himself with before they had gotten married. She would be able to understand Danny and give him what he needed.

She felt the jealousy then. She had known Danny was remarrying, everyone did. Springfield wasn’t a huge town. Word got around. And of course, the invitation that Carmen had sent in the mail to Rick and Abby had been a major clue also.

Carmen hadn’t for one minute wanted them to attend. She just wanted to make sure Michelle got the message that Danny was out of her life for good.

She had no right crying this morning when she woke up. She was the one who had wanted the divorce. He had every right to move on with his life. She was happy for him…sort of.

Seeing the article in the paper about the lawyer had totally unsettled her world. She was going to go on with her life but now she had found that she was not free of Danny at all. Not that she would ever be totally free of him. They still had that one painful connection that would never be lost.

The wedding guests were becoming restless now. People were standing up to see what was going on. The priest looked very uncomfortable and the flower girls were now twirling around in the aisle amongst the flowers.

They too became curious and made their way to the back. They came right up to where Danny and Michelle were standing. “Hi,” Alainie the older of the two said.

Amelia tried to move the children back but they would not be thwarted.

Michelle knelt down to get on the same level with them. “Hi,” she said back.

Alissa the younger grinned and handed her a flower. Michelle took it and said thank you. Alanie not happy at having her thunder stolen, said. “You’re pretty.”

“Thank you sweetheart,” she said. “I think you are pretty, too. What’s your name?”

“I’m Alanie and I’m six, this is seashell only her real name is Sissy chelle and she cant say that so we call her seashell, she’s only two” she explained matter of factly.

“Oh, I see, ” Michelle said. ” Well you two are the prettiest flower girls I have ever seen and you did such a good job.”

Just then an attractive brunette came to the back. “I’m sorry. I’m Amy and these two little terrors belong to me. Alanie, Alissa, come with me please,” she said with a twinkle in her eye indicating what kind of terrors she thought they were.

“They are beautiful children,” Michelle said meaning it. They had to belong to the same family as Amelia. The whole family held a strong resemblance with each other. They would be Danny’s nieces soon.

Danny was getting nervous. He wanted to get her out of here and talk about this problem. All of these people hanging about where getting on his nerves.

“Amy, can you go stall the wedding guests, I will be right back,” he said. She smiled and agreed to do as he asked although she didn’t think this was going to turn out well for her sister.

“Come with me” he said and grabbed Michelle’s hand. “I will be right back Amelia, don’t worry. Mother, don’t say a word,” he said and then went out on the front stoop of the church to talk.

“Now tell me again about this lawyer you got Michelle. Where did you get him again? Did you get his number off a bathroom wall or something?” he said.

“Danny, that’s not fair. I know this is awkward and I know the timing couldn’t be worse, but this marriage wouldn’t be legal. I just needed to tell you that. Don’t worry, I have everything figured out, I am going to get a quickie divorce down in the Dominican Republic and then you can do this again in a couple of weeks,” she said.

“Do you honestly think I would let you handle the divorce after the disastrous way you handled it before?” he said.

Michelle’s heart sank. He was blaming her. She supposed he was right but she had never thought anything like this would have happened. If she hadn’t read the paper this morning, they would have been married and well on the way to their honeymoon before they had become aware of the snafu. It wasn’t her fault her lawyer turned out to be a phony.

“Danny, I know it’s hard to trust me about this but you have to cut me some slack. How in the world was I to know that he was a fake? Huh? Even you have to admit that I couldn’t have come up with that one on my own,” she said and gave him a tentative smile.

He smiled back. She was right. Damn, he couldn’t be mad at her. He wanted to be mad at her. He wanted to get his life back. He wanted to stop loving Michelle and wake up each day to a new day filled with hope and promise and not broken promises and broken hearts.

“Okay, Michelle, I believe you but there’s only one way that I will agree to let you go down to the Dominican Republic to get that divorce,” he said.

“And what is that Danny?” she asked.

“I’m going with you,” he announced

Amelia was inconsolable. Danny had tried to explain it to her a hundred times. He had silently plead for Amy’s help and she had come to his rescue and led her sister away. He sat down on the bench in the vestibule and sighed. What a mess. Just then Alanie and Seashell walked up to him. “Uncle Danny” Alanie said.

“Yes, sweetheart?” he asked. Alissa the little one was trying to climb up on the bench with him without much success. He lifted her up and helped her next to him. She rewarded him with a grin.

“Who is that pretty lady?” Alanie asked totally unaware of the awkwardness her innocent question had caused.

“That’s Michelle,” he said.

“Why is she sad?” Alanie asked

“I don’t know sweetheart,” he said.

“You look sad too,” she said. Out of the mouth of babes, Danny thought. He was sad, had been sad and probably will always be sad.

“You know what munchkin?” he said. “I think they are still going to have the cake. Let’s go see if we can find some ice cream to go with it. Want to?” he said trying to distract the perceptive six year with a treat.

Alissa clapped her hands and started screaming “ice cweam, ice cweam” and Danny picked her up high and together the three of them went to find the ice cream bar.

Danny looked back. Michelle had gone. She might have thought she could sneak out but he would be damned if he was going to let her do this by herself. He was going with her and that was all there was to it.
