Pilar Learns the Truth April 16, 19 1999

Fri., April 16, 1999 - Jesse tries to calm her down when an excited Drew takes him back to her place and talks about finding her biological relatives and being part of a family. After Jesse and Drew share a series of passionate kisses, Jesse changes his mind about moving out of her place. Deciding not to tell him who she really is, Pilar spends time with Bill Lewis at the 5th Street diner. When she asks if she can crash at his place for a few days, he readily agrees and then asks if she’s having trouble with Danny. Denying it, Pilar is devastated when Bill reveals that Carmen ordered Michelle to be killed after Mick’s death.

Mon., April 19, 1999 – Pilar is setting with Bill at the Diner when Bill tells her about how Danny had to marry Michelle to save her life after Carmen ordered her execution. Pilar couldn’t believe it. Danny walked in and revealed that Pilar is his sister and drug her out of the diner after having a tussle with Bill. Outside of the diner Pilar begged Danny to tell her the truth about their family and he pleaded with her to understand about how things were and that she need not be involved. He admitted to her about Michelle killing Mick in self-defense. Pilar left and said that she will show ‘Mama’ just how innocent she is.

My Comments:

This some more of the scenes from my family tree plot line. Pilar doesn’t take the secrets being held from her well. She tries to strike out on her own. She really wants Manny together because she wants Danny to be happy. These scenes reflects the writers shift of storyline. The popularity and power of Manny totally wiped out their previous plan to recreate the 4 Musketeers. As Manny and Dresse became solid and committed couples, this left Bill odd man out. So they brought in Pilar, to not only give Danny someone else to interact with, but also to give Bill a love interest. Although Pilar and Bill were a solid couple for a very long time and eased Michelle and viewers acceptance of the Santos family, I never really felt they had much spark, but part of that was that Ryan Brown was just flat out miscast as Bill Lewis and never seems comfortable in his skin. I would have loved to see how Dan Cosgrove would have handled this story.

Danny is so sensitive he doesn’t want to hurt his sister and it tears him apart to tell her “the terrible truth.” Pilar meanwhile is a hoot when she’s upset. I wish she was this quick witted and quick tongued all of the time. Pilar’s question about witnesses is a good one. Michelle never told Danny there was a witness until it comes out a Ben Warren’s murder trial. He isn’t lying to Pilar. It’s also ironic because Michelle does have a deep love for Danny and like Pilar said  if she did, she wouldn’t go anywhere and that’s exactly what happened. She’s right there at the lighthouse trying to get past the same garbage Pilar is to be able to commit to her love for Danny. I wish I had more of this in the highlight clips.

This is the first of several understandings that Danny and Bill come to over the years. The circumstances of their relationship means there are unlikely to ever be close friends, they did form a strong, if unusual friendship to the point that Bill volunteered to serve as Danny’s campaign manager when he ran for mayor and when Jeffery O’Neill collapsed everything on them, Danny specifically got Bill’s record wiped clean as part of his deal.
